Adam Hurrey is joined on the midweek Adjudication Panel by Charlie Eccleshare and Nick Miller. On the agenda: Erling Haaland's Pro Evo name on Pointless, Wilfried Zaha confronts some modern footballing discourse head-on, Patrik Schick's uniquely selfish attacking statistics this season, a Europa League legend bows out, a pundit finally confronts the "players geeing up the crowd" epidemic, "the Lionel Messi of acting", soap-opera free transfers and a glorious Cliches tribute from an ice hockey commentator. Meanwhile, the panel make their niche predictions for the upcoming England games and discuss a listener approaching their pants collection like a careful squad rebuild. Painstakingly researched and written by football-obsessed writer and experienced game journalist, historian, and documentarian Richard Moss – author of Bitmap's own The Secret History of Mac Gaming – A Tale of Two Halves: The History Of Football Video Games stays keenly on the ball as it shares the rich and influential history of video game football – or 'soccer', for our American readers – striving to understand the very best the genre has to offer; and those releases that go a little wide of their target. A Tale of Two Halves takes you on a fascinating journey from the very first examples of the form all the way through to the genre's 2000s' heyday. It hits the back of the net with expert analysis of over 400 football games, including Sensible Soccer, Kick Off, Match Day, FIFA, Pro Evolution Soccer, This Is Football, Championship Manager, Premier Manager, and both old-school and new-school Football Manager. Gathered together in a single volume, that remarkable spread of releases presents a surprising variety of interpretations of the beautiful game, showcasing one of the medium's most creative, beguiling realms. A Tale of Two Halves primarily focuses on footy gaming's formative years – meaning from around 1980 to 2010 – and carefully divides the genre into two distinct halves, taking a considered look at each. As such, the first half is dominated by the fast and simple 2D action of icons like Kick Off, International Soccer, and Nintendo's Soccer. Then, following the half-time whistle, it turns its attention to the increasingly realistic 3D outings defined by icons like FIFA, Pro Evo, and Virtua Striker. Across its 628 pages, A Tale of Two Halves also features a foreword by legendary commentator Clive Tyldesley, hundreds of meticulously realised screenshots, and 13 interviews with pioneering football game developers. Inside you'll also find a series of illustrations from James Reynolds' 'Unlicensed FC' project – which celebrates Pro Evo's unusual takes on players' real names – as well as perfectly pitched pixel art from the team at 8-Bit Football. Numerous gaming platforms are covered, from the Atari 2600 and C64 to the Collecovison, via the Amiga line, PlayStation 1, Xbox 360, Arcades, and many more. Rudolf Thomas Inderst is a professor of Game Design with a focus on Digital Game Studies at the IU International University of Applied Science, department lead for Games at Swiss culture magazine Titel kulturmagazin, radio host of “Replay Value”, editor of “DiGRA D-A-CH Game Studies Watchlist”, a weekly messenger newsletter about Game Culture and curator of @gamestudies at tiktok. "People have been talking about it on the Internet saying it's the ‘Son of GamesMaster' but it's a lot funnier than that" said Dominik Dimaond in a 2004 press release. "It's so good, I'm soiling myself now just talking about it".Dom and mates return to our TV screens for one series of When Games Attack, a comedy show about video games that is here to save viewers from the "pish" being put out by Gamezville, Bits, Thumb Bandits and Gamepad. And in this episode, Dom counts down the top 5 video games that shouldn't be released outside of Japan, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty goes head-to-head with Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, and a Pro Evo tournament kicks off. We also get some behind the scenes on Earthworm Jim, and Dom visits a flight school in California to get shafted from behind by Johnny Ffinch.Richard Wilcox said in that same press release, "A lot of people have very fond memories of GamesMaster and so much of that is down to [Dom]... It's just great that the champ's back."Help us build future 'UCP Live!' The Athletic's Adam Hurrey and Charlie Eccleshare are joined by former Liverpool defender, European Cup winner and long-serving BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson or, as simply everyone knows him, Lawro. Among Lawro's selections for his footballing fascinations and irritations are managerial touchline bust-ups, referees making players walk over to them to get booked and, of course, "players squealing when they get tackled". Meanwhile, Lawro discusses the cultural reach of his now-retired BBC predictions column, his curious Pro Evo 2010 commentary and that alleged on-air falling-out with Guy Mowbray during a live World Cup game.

Why? Well, Sammy is transgender - and didn't think there'd be a place for her in football after she began coming to terms with her identity. But now, she's back playing regularly again - so what drew her back? This episode is so powerful, as Sammy explains exactly what it's like to be a trans person in football - from the fear of what others will think, to the importance of inclusive sides. Golazzo: The Totally Italian Football Show

Jimbo, James Horncastle and Gab Marcotti look back at the life and times of your favourite player if you had Pro Evo during its pomp – Inter and Brazil’s Adriano. The man known as the Emperor had enough talent to impress Ibra and possibly the most powerful shot the game has seen. We chart the story of his rise and the tragic circumstances behind his fall. Plus there’s plenty to discuss in Serie A. And not in a good way. It’s international week which means it’s a painful podcast for Andrew Slaven, JJ Bull and Laura Brannan. Kazakhstan 3-0 Scotland in Euro 2020 qualifying. Is it the worst result and performance in Scottish football history? Who or what was to blame? Shinnie? The pitch? All the tactics? Alex McLeish’s men fare better against San Marino’s line-up of Pro Evo players but the atmosphere is toxic amongst the fans. How much longer does McLeish have and who would be the ideal replacement? At club level, Arbroath are on the verge of the title, Albion may be embarking on the great escape and Ross County scoop up silverware. And the bible’s favourite team Queen of the South turned 100 this week. But what does the modern day hold after 7 defeats on the spin? Plus it’s a happy 1st birthday for On The Ball. We chat to them about their campaign to provide free period products at football grounds, starting at Celtic and taking them to LA and Brazil. • PART 1: Kazakhstan 3-0 Scotland – rock bottom? It’s a podcast title that has the potential to age very badly very quickly. But Andrew Slaven and JJ Bull are in cheerier form than they were in the last international break. That’s because Scotland laid the smackdown on Albania. Anthony Joseph was there with the Tartan Army and joins us in the studio, as we rave about the Ryans - Christie and Fraser - ahead of the Nations League decider with Israel. Did a record number of withdrawals from the squad help Alex McLeish stumble upon the ideal Scotland line-up? Singer Amy Macdonald was less happy, given a St Johnstone snub. Do certain clubs get ignored when it comes to international duty? Domestically, Callum Law from the Evening Express has some news about the potential for a brand new League Three. Will Rangers and Celtic get the Colts teams they’ve always wanted in the Scottish pyramid? And before the Premiership kicks off again, analyst Blair Newman tells us about the tactical trends that have seen the table look so tight at the top. Hear why Livingston are so much more than a plastic pitch. Plus we open with some gaming chat after Celtic sign the Ronaldo and Messi of the esports world. • PART 1: Celtic sign Pro Evo world champions (1m 00s) • PART 2a: Albania 0-4 Scotland (4m 40s) • PART 2b: Amy Macdonald sticks up for Richard Foster (13m 00s) • PART 2c: Scotland v Israel preview (16m 50s) • PART 3: Tactical trends in the Premiership with analyst Blair Newman (20m 15s) • PART 4: SPFL headlines with Neil White (28m 35s) • PART 5: Potential plans for League 3, with Callum Law from the Evening Express (31m 30s) • PART 6: A look ahead to the Premiership weekend (36m 35s)

Wie könnte Konami ihr PES noch retten? Spielepodcast-Pionier & Fußballfan Hoobs (von «Reingemacht», «Nur der HSV» und dem «1. Stevo and the returning Gregory are joined by Michael for this month’s episode of the N-Europe Show. We start by talking about the most recent games we played, namely Super Mario 3D Land and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in spoiler free fashion. There’s also a mention of Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 on Wii – if you’re a Pro Evo player then why not join up to the forum and challenge us to a few matches? From there, it’s onto a few news items such as a debate over the merits of the Nintendo 3DS Circle Pad Pro attachment and how Nintendo managed to sneak Kirby Adventure Wii onto store shelves all unbeknownst to Michael. Having ignored Mario Kart 7 up until this point, we dive into a retrospective discussion of the entire series - from humble Mode 7 SNES origins right up to the motion controlled, bike centric Wii entry, before getting Michael's views on the much heralded Mario Kart 7 itself. Mario Kart Arcade is skipped over as the podcast crew have only had very limited experience with it and no good memories to share. Finally, Greg tests our Mario Kart knowledge with a quiz and we round out the episode by giving some hidden gems from the Wii and DS libraries a shout-out. We couldn’t mention them all, but the omission of Soul Bubbles is criminal. If you own it, give yourself a pat on the back, if not, hunt down a copy on eBay while you listen to the podcast. Follow N-Europe on Twitter, join the forum or let us know what you think below. 0:00 – 25:43 – Part One: Mario, Zelda and news. 25:44 - 55:22 - Part Two: Mario Kart retrospective. 55:23 - 1:12:32 - Part Three: Mario Kart quiz and hidden gems.
