Roll With The Punches
What IS Courage? (Like Actually) | Professor Cynthia Pury - 908

What IS courage? I’ve been getting increasingly curious... mainly because I talk about it a LOT. I talk about how, when I reflect on ‘young Tiff,’ she thought she was courageous for doing the things that scared other people (while artfully dodging the stuff that really scared her). Solid little facade, really. I talk about how the world seems to throw being fearless and being courageous into the same bucket, when really, they’re just second cousins who rarely show up at the same family function… because if you take fear out of the equation, courage kinda ceases to exist. I talk about all the things I reckon have to come into play to be courageous. And yet, I still wasn’t satisfied with my own understanding of it. So off I went on a bit of a quest… and found Professor Cynthia Pury to help encourage a deeper understanding #SeeWhatIDidThere. Cynthia’s a Professor of Psychology and a pioneer in the study of courage, with her work widely cited across personality and positive psych. Oh, and that thing I used to do? Turns out there’s a name for it. It’s called accolade courage, as opposed to process courage - which is actually doing the scary thing. So there you go. Enjoy! Resistance: When France's clergy saved Jews during WWII

France in focus

After the fall of France in 1940, the clergy welcomed Marshal Pétain as a saviour. But when Jewish people started being rounded up in the summer of 1942, Protestant pastors and Catholic clerics spoke out against the deportations. Their words broke the silence of the institutions and encouraged the Resistance, while schools and convents opened their doors to Jewish refugees. In the spring of 1940, the French army was defeated by the Wehrmacht, and Marshal Pétain agreed to collaborate with the occupying forces. Among the measures taken by his Vichy-based government was the "status of Jews", on October 18. The law excluded Jews from public life and many foreign Jewish refugees were also rounded up in internment camps. As early as the summer of 1940, some French people were compelled to commit to a moral and spiritual Resistance. This was the case of Pastor Roland de Pury in Lyon, who declared from the pulpit on July 14: "France would be better off dead than to sell itself."His words echo the sentiments of Bruno de Solages, rector of the Institut Catholique in Toulouse, who took in refugees from all over Europe, issuing them with student cards to enable them to obtain false papers and go underground.Yet the real turning point came in the summer of 1942, when the large roundups began. Volunteers working in the internment camps near Toulouse alerted the archbishop to the mistreatment of the Jewish people, as they were directed on foot into cattle cars. Monseigneur Saliège wrote a letter, which he sent to be read aloud in every church in his diocese, denouncing the deportations and appealing to Christian morality. In Lyon, on the night of August 28-29, 1942, the Amitié Chrétienne association organised the largest rescue of Jewish children in France, thanks to the protection of Cardinal Gerlier, Archbishop of Lyon. Cardinal Gerlier, who had supported Marshal Pétain in 1940, refused to hand over the children to the Prefect of Lyon, who was directing the deportations. Spiritual power in defiance of the powers that be: the Lyon Resistance amplified this act, making it a pivotal event.Cardinals Saliège and Gerlier were not targeted by the authorities because of their age and rank in the Church, but many men and women of the cloth were arrested for their moral Resistance. Roland de Pury spent more than five months incarcerated at Fort Montluc in Lyon. Others, such as Solages and three priests from the Institut Catholique in Toulouse, were sent to camps in Germany. They wrote first-hand accounts of their deportation in a collective publication entitled "Pèlerins de bagne" or "Pilgrims of the penal colony". Many of their fellow prisoners never returned.

For more than 30 years, the acclaimed British sculptor Conrad Shawcross has been preoccupied with the concept of time. Throughout a career defined by blurring the boundaries between art and science and devising ambitious constructs that ask audiences to contemplate the world around them, Shawcross has experimented with different perceptions of time, from its measure in relation to human lives and cosmic events to how it operates as a force of change. Shawcross's latest exploration on the subject began with an unlikely source: the luxury Scotch whisky maker Royal Salute. Drawing inspiration from the incredible expanse of time contained within an opulent 53-year-old Royal Salute whisky blend, Shawcross created a spectacular kinetic sculpture that merges a massive, sapphire blue glass disc with an oak spindle and oblong crystal decanter to represent how time functions on multiple levels. The new artwork, titled Royal Salute Time Chamber by Conrad Shawcross and the second collaboration in Royal Salute's Art of Wonder series, debuted at the 2023 edition of Frieze London last week with a discussion about the project between Shawcross and veteran auctioneer and Artnet News contributor Simon de Pury. The New York Times declared Andrew Levitas “has the Midas touch” when describing his continued work across multiple creative platforms. A mainstay on the New York and European art scene for over two decades, Levitasʼ Metalwork Installations® are widely regarded as a breakthrough in connecting photography, sculpture, and contemporary art. Levitasʼ “Organic Abstractions” (paintings built from homemade pigments and organic materials ‒ in some cases entire trees) have also received critical acclaim. Levitas is one of only a handful of American artists ever accepted to show with the prestigious Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts held at the Louvre. Select exhibitions include: Metalwork Photography®: A Survey which was the first ever single artist exhibition at Phillipʼs Berkeley Square in London, Levitas: An Early Retrospective at New York University, and Metalwork Photography®: Sculptures at Phillips de Pury & Co. in Manhattan. Recent acquisitions include The National Museum Wales as well as 10 Downing Street. Levitasʼ award-winning fine art engages with the same themes that are seen in his films. Minamata, Levitasʼ latest directing project which he also wrote, stars Johnny Depp. The film follows photojournalist W. Eugene Smith (Depp) who travels to the Japanese coastal town of Minamata to expose corporate negligence and government cover-ups by documenting one of the worldʼs greatest environmental disasters. David Friend of Vanity Fair detailed the film as “A deadly health crisis. Venal leaders profiting as the public suffers. An intrepid journalist trying to expose the cover-up. Andrew Levitasʼs powerful, impassioned Minamata is the movie for this moment.” Minamata had its gala premiere at Berlinale 2020. Levitas will exhibit a series of Metalwork installations based on the film in tandem with the filmʼs release in leading cities around the world in 2021. Prior to Minamata, Levitasʼ wrote and directed Lullaby which stars Amy Adams, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson, and Garrett Hedlund. The film, an exploration of patientsʼ rights, was described by Pete Hammond (Deadline) as a “strong human drama” with “Jenkins a true actorʼs actor, delivering a very Oscar-worthy supporting turn.” The premiere was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A professor at New York University, Levitas maintains studios in New York and London. After rising to the top of the Sotheby's organization, he left to strike out on his own. That led to an eventual merger of his auction house with Phillips to form Phillips de Pury. These days, Simon runs the eponymous de PURY organization which provides access to artists and their work through conventional sales, auctions and charity events. I speak with Simon about how the auction world has evolved, the market dynamics for middle-market galleries and his upcoming launch of an auction model for primary market sales.

About Philip Colbert Graduating with an MA in Philosophy from St. Andrews University, Colbert's work has received international acclaim in museums and galleries worldwide for his energetic new approach to painting and pop theory. Following on from early Pop painters such as Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist. Colbert's paintings cross high art themes from old master paintings and contemporary art theory with everyday symbols of mass contemporary culture, all narrated through the eyes of Colbert's cartoon Lobster alter ego. He has been championed as a contemporary Pop master by art world figures such as Charles Saatchi & Simon de Pury. Like all good discoveries, I found Al's NA Beer on Instagram. The logo, the white can, it all beckoned to be drank in a dive bar. Learning more about the founder Alban, a European who worked in music and nightlife I discovered our passion for the dive bar and the feeling of finding quiet and resolve in yourself. Alban's alcohol-free lifestyle began similarly to mine, it was a pause met with an inventory of the self and how living life without it would ultimately be better in every way except for maybe going to bed earlier. I was happy to learn that Alban is also a runner, and I look forward to the day that we can run in Central Park, and crack an Al's after. Alban spent almost 20 years working in the Arts & Music industries in London and New York. It included a stint as Art Ambassador for Absolut Vodka, one of the world's largest spirit companies. A few years ago, he decided to see what life could be without drinking and he hasn't looked back. This led him to launch AL's; a classic American non-alcoholic craft beer to enjoy all of life's social and celebratory moments without alcohol. Founded in 2016, the mission of Ben's Friends is to offer hope, fellowship, and a path forward to anyone who struggles with substance abuse or addiction.

These were important viticultural who made a name for Australian wine in Paris and London, winning hearts, palates and medals. One of these pioneering Swiss families was the de Purys, who established Yeringberg in the area now known as Coldstream. In May 2011, Intelligence Squared Asia presented four leading voices in the arts to argue the motion "Art must be beautiful". Can aesthetic standards of the day dictate the long-term value of art? Who defines taste? Do parameters of institutional validation differ from collector ideals? Does concept in art triumph over creation? Is meaning in art an obligation or an afterthought? Arguing for the motion were artist and acclaimed photographer David LaChapelle and Co-founder of Phillips de Pury and Co Simon de Pury. Arguing against the motion were Award-winning Singaporean multimedia artist Ming Wong and best-selling author Stephen Bayley. The debate was chaired by Lars Nittve, Executive Director of M+ at the West Kowloon Cultural District. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
