One of the greatest rivalries I see in programming strength training for women over 40 is the battle between strength and muscle. My approach to strength training and muscle growth incorporates a cohesive and holistic approach to your programming that will help you reach your goals and incorporate these philosophies into your training program. Accessory work can help you spice things up in your training, address imbalances, or help you understand what you want to work on.  It is not just about strength development or muscle growth; the goal is to help you weave these things together to further enhance your strength development and hypertrophy, prevent injuries, and so much more. Building Muscle is a Spectrum Building muscle takes place across a spectrum. By thinking both bilaterally and unilaterally about your accessory work depending on where you are at in your program, you will be able to find your training tempo and add the necessary context it takes to reach your training goals. I want you to be able to understand the ‘why', the rationale. When you understand the key components that go into making a proper strength training program, you can better equip yourself to obtain your goals in the best way possible. Today's podcast is with Alex Kanellis. Alex is the founder of Landmine University. He is a former state champion wrestler, Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year (Football), and University of Iowa football player. He has been a scholastic strength coach, wrestling and football coach, as well as having spent time as a performance coach for Weck Method. Currently, Alex's focus is on training youth wrestlers, as well as his work with Landmine University. Strength training for athletes is fundamentally basic. The powerlift variations, as well as Olympic lifts recruit a large amount of muscle mass and are fundamentally stimulating. At the same time, with the potential to be over-used, “functional” training has emerged, offering light-weight movements with high demands for balance and coordination. Landmine oriented training movements offer a happy medium in a high potential for force application, a rotational and arc-like orientation, as well as short learning curves (unlike the longer learning curve of the Olympic lifts). Today's podcast features sports performance coaches Rich Burnett and John Garrish. Rich Burnett is the President and Director of Athletic Development for Triple F Elite Sports Training in Knoxville, TN. He is also the Co-Founder and CEO of Athletic Assessment Technology, known more commonly as Plyomat, and has over 10 years of experience working in high school, and NCAA DI strength and conditioning.  John Garrish is the Director of Athletic Development & Performance at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, Florida, and the school's Head Track and Field Coach.  John was voted the 2022 National High School Strength Coach of the Year by the NHSSCA and has been a two-time guest previously on this podcast, speaking on a variety of plyometric and speed training topics. The standing vertical jump, or “countermovement” test is a very popular method of assessment for athletes and has been for some time.  What the standing vertical leap test doesn't tell you, is how fast an athlete gets off the ground, which is generally what matters in sport, more so than how high an athlete can reach.  Reactivity is also a general coordination ability where athletes can both anticipate the ground and coordinate the proper muscle activation sequences to rebound themselves back into the air, which is critical for a variety of athletic jumping, throwing, cutting, and overall movement tasks. On today's show, Rich and John will get into how they train reactive ability in plyometrics, with respect to ground contact times, and the function of power that being able to get off the ground quickly provides.  We also discuss the differences between double and single-leg reactive strength tests and measurements, and how they correlate to athleticism, as well as the differences between simple plyometric movements based on contact time, versus more complex and coordinated movements, such as skips and gallops. Today’s episode features Alex Natera, Senior Athletic Performance Specialist at the GWS Giants.  Alex has over twenty years of experience in high performance sport including time spent as a professional sportsman, a technical coach, a sport science lecturer, a published scientific researcher and his primary role as strength & conditioning coach.   Prior to the Giants, Alex was the Senior S&C Coach of Aspire Academy Athletics specializing in the sprint events.  Alex has extensive work with the physical preparation of track and field athletes.  He also has worked as a Rugby head coach, and has done physical preparation for over a dozen Olympic and Commonwealth games sports.  Alex is currently completing his PhD from Bond University where he is investigating a novel aspect of power development, high volume power training and repeat power ability. Angus is currently employed by High Performance Sport New Zealand in a power physiology and strength and conditioning role, primarily working with track and field.   I first discovered some of his work in my own research on muscular overshoot, where I came upon a slideshow he had done on special strength concepts for sprinting and jumping, and it was one of the best I’d ever seen.  Angus has also written a couple (1) A Coaches' Guide to Strength Development (2)  A Coaches' Guide to Strength Development 2 of great articles on the idea of eccentric strength training on Stuart McMillan’s excellent blog, which I highly recommend reading. There were so many great topics that Angus has spoke on across these three mediums, such as eccentric overload, chasing weightroom numbers, building rate of force development, foot training, and more.  Angus delivered on these topics in our podcast, and then some! On October 7th the College of Health and Human Services and the Northern New England Association of Healthcare Executives hosted a special event at the University of New Hampshire, Shaping the Future: Leadership and Public Policy in Healthcare. We had two panels and a keynote speaker and it was a terrific event. This is the first panel, Talent Management for Bench Strength Development. This panel included: Samantha O’Neill, the Vice President for Human Resources at the Elliot Health System in Manchester, New Hampshire; Kevin Callahan, the President and CEO of Exeter Health Resources; and Warren West, the CEO of Littleton Regional Healthcare and CEO of the North Country Healthcare. Greg is an Associate Professor and Course Coordinator for Strength and Conditioning within the School of Medicine and Health at Edith Cowan University.  Greg is also the current President of National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
