Ford knows how to build trucks, that part isn't in doubt. But do the Europeans know how to buy them? After all this is land of the panel van for commercial use (aka 'white van man'), and we simply don't have truck culture like the U.S. or Ute culture like Australia. However that could change with the launch of Ford's new plugin hybrid truck: the Ford Ranger PHEV. Revealed at the IAA Transportation show in Hanover, Germany, the Ranger PHEV represents Ford's commitment to combining utility with providing vehicles which lower emissions. As Europe's first plug-in hybrid pickup truck, it promises to deliver the capability that Ranger enthusiasts expect, while also offering the benefits of electric propulsion. At least, until the (relatively small) battery runs out. This new model is set to join Ford's existing lineup of diesel-powered Rangers, providing customers with a broader range of options to suit various needs and local emissions regulations. We are talking about Toyota and Subaru partnering for EV assembly, Ford restarting the ignition on the Lightning, and Walmart is taking a crack at adding in store ads.Show Notes with links:Toyota is set to extend its partnership with Subaru by manufacturing a three-row Subaru EV crossover in Kentucky by 2025.The final assembly location and battery sourcing could potentially qualify both vehicles for the full $7,500 federal tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act.The joint development and production strategy allows Subaru to introduce a larger EV while maintaining high-speed operations at its U.S. assembly plant in Lafayette, Ind.Toyota has announced investments of $5.9 billion in its North Carolina battery plant, where it will operate six battery production lines, four for hybrid vehicles and two for electric vehicles.Toyota aims to release 10 EV models globally by 2026 and has committed to investing over $37 billion in EV development and production through the end of the decade.Ford is ramping up the production of its F-150 Lightning electric truck, aiming to triple the production rate in a bid to test the readiness of mainstream U.S. truck buyers to switch to electric vehicles.Ford has restarted the assembly of its F-150 Lightning electric truck and is aiming to reach a 150,000-vehicle annualized production rate by October.To support this increase, Ford has added 1,200 workers to the Lightning assembly system and plans to operate it on a three-shift work rotation.Half of the new orders for the Lightning are for the XLT model, the middle of the vehicle's lineup starting at $54,995.To support increased Lightning production, Ford will focus sales efforts on "attracting more traditional customers, or the early majority," according to Marin Gjaja, chief customer officer for Ford's Model-e electric vehicle business.Joining retailers like Target and Kroger, Walmart is expanding its in-store advertising, allowing brands to buy spots on self-checkout screens and other areas in the store. This includes third-party ads on screens in self-checkout lanes and TV aisles, radio spots, and product sampling at demo stations.Retail media, marketing to shoppers based on customer data, is becoming a substantial revenue stream for retailers. It is expected to be a $45 billion industry this year, up 20% from the prior year.Advertising still constitutes a small part of Walmart's overall revenue. Tom Voelk offers a preview of the next-generation mid-sized pickup that gets a Raptor version for the first time in the US. In the XL, XLT and Lariat models, choose between a 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder with 270 horsepower or the optional 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 with 315 HP. The Raptor gets a 3-liter V6 with 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque and a different advanced four-wheel-drive system. There's all sort of tech too.

Ford has just announced details of the Tremor package for its popular Ford Maverick pickup truck, and it promises to be an interesting new entry in the ever-growing list of new off-roaders. The new Tremor equipment is available on XLT and Lariat series trucks. It includes a 1-inch lift for greater ground clearance, exclusive Trail Control off-road “cruise control,” unique off-road-oriented front and rear suspension, advanced all-wheel drive with four-wheel-drive lock, and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. Of course, there are appearance items as well — blacked-out Ford logos, headlamps and taillamps, “Tremor Orange “tow hooks, an updated fender vent, and a new grille. We'll also talk about two other Ford trucks, the Ford F-150 Raptor and the Ford F-150 Lightning. In this episode, we'll talk more about the Ford Maverick Tremor and also discuss the new BMW i4 eDrive35, the latest addition to the BMW i4 lineup. With a starting price of $51,400, the new i4 eDrive35 is driven by the same Gen5 eDrive powertrain technology found in the BMW iX and the other i4 models. The single “electrically-excited” synchronous motor sends 281 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels, resulting in an estimated 0-60 mph time of just 5.8 seconds. Our special guest this week is Cayley Hill. She is manager of the EV Ecosystem at General Motors, and she will tell us about a fascinating new service General Motors is offering called EV Live. It's been the number one selling vehicle in North America for the past 40 years, and the number one selling truck for 45 years straight. Therefore, the F-150 Lightning had some big shoes to fill, as expectations were very high. - We're happy to report that after spending the better part of two days driving various versions of the Lightning on and off-road, pulling trailers, hauling cargo, using Ford Pro Power to recharge a Mustang Mach-E, and learning more about Ford Intelligent Backup Power, we believe the F-150 Lightning is the best overall F-150 ever produced. The biggest problem Ford may have to face is building enough of them. - All versions of the Lightning feature dual-motors and all-wheel-drive, and the Extended Range battery versions boast 580 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque. - Quite honestly, it's faster than any 6,500-pound pickup truck really ever needs to be. - The maximum cargo capacity is 2,235 lbs (for Pro & XLT trims with the standard battery) and vehicles with the $825 towing package, are capable of towing 10,000 lbs (XLT & Lariat with the extended range battery). - The regenerative braking is strong even in the default mode. - The Lightning has a blended braking system that also adds more regeneration when the friction brake pedal is depressed. - Ford uses a 400-volt battery system that utilizes pouch-style cells that are produced through a joint venture with SK Innovation. The standard range battery pack has a usable capacity of 98 kilowatt hours, while the extended range pack boosts that to 131 kWh. - Extended Range Pro, XLT, and Lariat: 320 miles - all versions of the Lightning come standard with a locking rear differential that worked exceptionally well. - The standard range battery can accept 11.3 kilowatts when charging from a 48-amp level 2 charging source. The extended range pack comes with dual 40-amp onboard chargers with a combined input of 19.2 kW. - Customers who opt for the bigger battery pack will also get Ford's Charge Station Pro, an 80-amp bi-directional charging station free with the vehicle. - the Lightning has Ford's Pro Power Onboard and the standard version has an output of 2.4 kW on the Pro and XLT trims. However, the output is bumped up to 9.6 kW for the Lariat and Platinum models (optional on the Pro & XLT) and that power is accessible from the eleven power outlets that are scattered inside and outside of the Lightning. Assuming that the rate of 300,000+ units per quarter would be maintained for all of 2022, the company would be at 1.2 million total. - In terms of new plants, according to the latest reports, Tesla Giga Austin in Texas should start production soon, and Tesla Giga Berlin in Grünheide near Berlin, Germany also appears ready to start production. - If those two new plants would add 300,000 together, with a maintained rate from Q4 by the plants in California and China, the total would then exceed 1.5 million. Butt warmers require equipment group 312A, which also includes Ford's CoPilot 360 2.0 Level 2 driver assist suite, a power tailgate and a heated leather steering wheel in addition to other, less noteworthy bells and whistles. That's another $9,500 on the sticker. - Couple the extended range battery with 312A to get the Lightning relatively close to the R1T's base spec in terms of interior comforts and performance, and you're spending $74,169 including destination. - Poking around both electric pickups' build-and-price tools, here's the impression I get: the F-150 Lightning is obviously the more affordable truck and actually attainable for those with less to spend. However, if you plan on checking boxes for options, the R1T will quickly become the better value. For $60K-$70K, it's the more compelling package. As per the communication, Tesla is now poised to start camera retrofits for its older cars, which would allow Model S and Model X vehicles with FSD to access the full suite of features currently offered by the company. - A screenshot of the communication has been shared online, and it reads as follows: “As an owner with Full Self-Driving Capability and early production cameras, you are eligible for complimentary Autopilot Camera Upgrade. Camera replacements are required to access a continuously expanding suite of Full Self-Driving Capability features. To arrange your complimentary camera replacements, schedule a new appointment from the Service menu in your Tesla App,” the message read. - Tesla also updated its official webpage for its Full Self-Driving Computer Installations. A new section titled “Camera Replacements” has now been added to the page. And now that day has come, as the bike begins serial production at the company's Berlin Motorrad plant. The CE 04 falls somewhere between a maxiscooter and a light electric motorcycle. The biggest announcement has to be that the automaker is working on and planning to launch an even larger electric crossover called ID.8, which will be about the size of today's Atlas model (sold in North America and China). It may also be a three-row vehicle. - We expect the ID.8 will also get the MEB platform that all other ID-badged models ride on. A base Pro starts at just $39,974. The XLT starts at $52,974, and a fully-loaded Platinum at $90,474. What's so surprising about those prices is how close Ford is flirting with gasoline-engine F-150 price equivalents — and that's before consumers take advantage of federal and state tax incentives. - The Chicago Auto Show was our first chance at seeing it up close and in-person. While oogling it around the stand, we caught up with Darren Palmer, general manager of Ford's Battery Electric Vehicles division, to find out how Ford managed its pricing. The answer is largely a simple one — scale. - the top half of this truck has a scale of 4 million units. That seat, we buy 4 million of. We get the best price in the industry. The front trunk, apart from the unique components, the whole rest of the truck, we get 4 million units.” - “The frame at the bottom is all-new with all-new suspension, but it's through the same supplier who makes our other frames,” Palmer says. “And they've got the facility, so we work with them to produce the all-new frame, but at a reasonable price point, given the fact they build a million frames for us.” - “The next-generation of SUVs coming, the larger trucks, and the SK Innovation batteries. So we get great scale, and we share the components and technology in them, which means we get great value in the electric system.” - He went on to assure us that Ford will indeed be making a profit on the Lightning. More importantly, all-electric car sales went up 33% to almost 10,000. - So far this year, Hyundai reports sales of 43,829 plug-in car sales (up 12% year-over-year), which represents 5.2% of the total volume. Sales by powertrain type year-to-date: BEVs: 36,108 (up 3.7%) - The growth in the plug-in segment is directly related to the introduction of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. In June, Hyundai sold 8,122 Ioniq 5, which is 74% of all plug-ins. - Hyundai Ioniq 5 noted 3,667 units in its home market, while the remaining 4,455 were exported. The recommendation was prompted after the largest U.S. automaker said it was investigating reports of two recent fires in vehicles that were recalled in November for fire risks. - In April, GM also announced a software update and said dealers would use "diagnostic tools to identify potential battery anomalies and replace battery module assemblies as necessary." The detail is in the new IDTechEx report, "Routes to 1000 Mile (1600km) Battery Electric Cars 2021-2041". - Raghu Das, CEO of analysts IDTechEx says it is actually a swarm of advances."We find that better thermal management has a long way to go in improving range and we believe that just improving battery software will boost range by 10%. It is possible to go far beyond the simplification of the die castings coming in the Tesla cars replacing up to 360 parts. Quite separately, in-mold electronics will replace up to 100 parts at a time and in-wheel motors replace gearing, differential, and axles.” - 600-mile cars will be the antidote to range anxiety and more. For example, IDTechEx finds that it sharply increases resale value and useful life (less battery cycling and fast charging aging the battery). Selling electricity vehicle-to-grid is no longer a silly idea when you have some miles to spare. - Das concludes, "The UK is a small country yet Ford's 2021 Go Electric opinion survey showed that UK car buyers are still uncomfortable with the idea of swapping their fossil-fuelled vehicles for an EV. Most severely, from rural areas that was 82%, villages 76%, smaller towns 79%. Overall, a large proportion of drivers said they still think range is a big issue. By 2023 the group is expecting to see four more LNG-powered ships with dual-fuel engines added to its current fleet of two LNG car carriers, which entered service in 2020. Six of the nine car carriers crossing the North Atlantic for VW are to be powered by LNG. - As one of the first car manufacturers to subscribe to the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement that aim to limited global warming to significantly less than two degrees by 2050, the use of LNG will enable VW to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in its fleet by up to 25% (tank-to-wake). - Following the switching of all rail transport with Deutsche Bahn to green electricity, the Group has caused an 85% reduction in CO2 emissions through its two biofuel-powered car carriers that operate along coastal routes in Europe. - The new ships will also permit the use of non-fossil fuels in the future, thus reducing CO2 emissions even further - The ships are being built in China and have a capacity of around 7,000 car equivalent units - Retrofitting with battery cells will also be possible for two of the new ships, with all four LNG ships being equipped with shore power connections to ensure all local emissions in ports providing this facility can be eliminated. Today’s topic is the new 2020 Ford Explorer and what’s changed since the original Explorer was released and also some financing information for those who are looking on best ways, quickest ways, fastest ways to get financed. On the podcast we have with us, Jim Morgan, he’s the Finance Manager at Miracle Ford. Hey Jim, welcome to the podcast. Hey John, thank you for having me. Glad to, glad to have you along. You know, people always want to know who’s behind the curtain, who’s behind the voice, who is this guy? So tell us a little bit about you, your background. Where did you grow up, Jim? Well, I grew up here in Nashville. I’ve been here all my life. Started in the car business in 1993 after several years working in the hospitality industry. Okay. So what were you doing in hospitality? I managed hotels and restaurants. Okay. Well such a big switch from that to automotive. How did you get into automotive? How did you bridge that gap? It’s about the same. It’s the same kind of the business. You’re still dealing with people. So that’s, that’s basically how I was able to move into it. And then how did you wind up at Miracle Ford In 2002 I went to work for Tim Galvin, at Miracle Chrysler as Finance Manager. Been with them ever since. All right. So and then since 2002 so that would make it about, what, 17 going on 18 years. That’s correct. Gotcha. All right. So as Finance Manager, people understand, okay, well he manages finance, but what exactly is your role at Miracle Ford in terms of Finance Manager? What can you do for someone who’s coming in to try to get financed? Well, we are going to offer the best programs that we have available for our customers, especially the customers that may feel like that they have the credit issues that maybe keep them from buying a car. Credit scores aren’t what they used to be. I mean there are many cases where you see some lower scores. It’s still git, very good rates. I had one over the weekend, I get as low as 1.9% so you have to be able to look at it in the big picture in order to structure a deal to make it work for both the customer and the bank. Well you know the old perception is, well if you have a low credit score, the only thing you’re going to be able to buy, if you can buy, is a junker clunker or something that it might be eight or 10 years old. So your saying even with challenged credit, it’s possible to get a a new vehicle, a lease or purchase at at 1.9% in that particular case The 1.9% was a on a purchase of a new Expedition. So yeah, I mean you can buy pretty much whenever you can, you know, whatever you care to buy. So what’s changed? I mean why now Jim is it that with a, we’ll just call it challenged credit or less than you know, high credit that someone would be able to not only get into a new vehicle but at a good rate. Why, why now versus a few years ago? One thing I’ve seen is that there are more opportunities depending on the cars and also the customer. I mean the credit score is not their whole story either. I mean most of the time they’ve got great history and employment history, residence history, things like that all add up. So you have to take the whole picture when you’re getting a customer taken care of with a bank. Okay. So you think they take a more of a 360 degree view today versus a few years ago when they just would only look at the score and say yes or no? That’s exactly right. We’re also talking today about the new and exciting 2020 Ford Explorer SUV. Kind of hard to believe that 2020 models are here and when you hear about the Ford Explorer SUV, you also hear things like, well there’s the XLT, there’s the limited, there’s the s t and the platinum, and sometimes the model names can be confusing, but just basically tell us a little bit about the Ford Explorer and the different models in terms of what the differences are. But really I think what people want to know about most is what’s cool about the Ford Explorer, what’s going on? Well, everything’s cool about the new Explorer because it’s a whole new body style. We’ve revamped it top to bottom. One of the things that I really like about the new Explorer is now rear wheel drive meaning instead of the front pulling it when it was with the front wheel drive. Now it’s going to be pushing. The overall length has changed. The rear of the truck is now a little bit longer, which is going to increase the towing experience. The towing on a new Explorer can be up to 5,600 pounds, which is a lot larger than it’s ever been before. And also with that design, it’s going to give a better ride and handling to a better weight distribution on the truck. All right. You know, and I think I was doing a little bit of research before calling you that the Explorer was the first four door SUV that was produced by Ford, I think back in 1991 to replace the two-door Bronco. I remember the Broncos. Is that about right? That sounds about right. I know it’s a year or two before I got into the business, but I think that’s exactly right. Right. And, and the site also say this is now the sixth generation, if I read that properly, six. That is correct. Wow. I mean that’s, that’s something, what do you see in terms of new and exciting technology? You know, we’ve got so much technology with Wifi and everything fi all over the place, everybody’s connected all here and there. What’s going on in the Explorer that’s cool about technology? Well, it starts everywhere. We’ve now have a tenant screen that’s in the middle of the, of the stack for your navigation and all your controls. It’s also handy. Everything’s just right there for you to see. And then you go into like the st truck and the st Explorer is straight out of the racing division of Ford. So you really got a performance vehicle in the new Explorer. And also John, we now have a hybrid Explorer, which is really exciting, but the hybrid can get up to 500 miles of a tank of fuel, but also it can still tow 5,000 pounds, which is really unheard of when you talk about a hybrid vehicle. So Jim, what would you tell people about Miracle Ford in terms of why they should buy at Miracle as opposed to other Ford dealers? Because every dealer out there as you know, is going to say, hey, you know, we’re going to give you the best deal. We’re the best. We got the best customer service and all this kind of thing. What is it that makes Miracle Ford different now that you’ve been there? What do we say, 18 years? Well, soon to be 17. The thing I see is the people, I mean, you can go and look at the numbers of a car and they’re within $100 of each other. And I mean they’re, everybody’s got them. Everybody pays the same. However, it’s the people from the Galvin family who’s been here since they opened this in 1980. I mean, they’ve been, they’ve been strong community people. And I mean, we all work towards the same goal. We’re here to take care of our customers first. And you know, I have a lot of special customers that just call me and you know, and so it’s, it’s the family approach that we use here to take care of our customers.
