Tatenda! Siyabonga! Grazie!
The Waverider is flying Zambesi, New Zealand and Salvation, North Dakota trying to stop Mallus or Mailas from taking over the world. “Guest Staring John Noble” – The Legends must stop Grodd from killing Obama in his college years, but that is just one of the crazy things going on this ep. Nate & Wally join Amaya in Zambesi. They convince her older self to pass on the totem and her daughter Esi to take it up. Damien joins the Legends to stop Mallus from forming and killing Nora in the process. They have to get John Noble to read Mallus' lines in the process. But things go south. Damien double crosses them, releases Grodd on the village and let's Nora escape. “The Good, The Bad, and The Cuddly” – Rip sacrifices himself to buy the Legends some time against a fully formed Mallus. They head to Salvation, North Dakota where Jonah Hex is sheriff. Zari sends for help and Ava, Jax, Helen the Amazonian, and Kuasa Vixen come to help. The Legends must use the Totems to form a defender, but the first attempt fails. Ray and Damien go back in time and save Nora by sacrificing Damien to be Mallus' host. The Legends and friends must fight an army of Romans, Vikings, and Pirates. While they are being held at bay, the Legends form Bebo who defeats Mallus with wrestling moves and the day is saved. People love this ep, people hate this ep, and people are in the middle. We as podcasters were right there with them. Ascolta l'intervista completa

Medical MissionaryDuring the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901),British people traveled around the whole world. They charted the seas, mapped out distant countries and studied plants, animals and people. They also claimed many lands for England. This kind of international travel was made easier by improved transportation and communication.New inventions such as steamships, trains, telegraphs and telephones made long distances seem smaller.Of course, people had different reasons for going to distant lands. Some were businessmen who saw economic opportunities overseas.Big-game hunters wanted to be the first to shoot strange animals and bring back trophies to England.Scientists intended to study unknown animals and plants.Missionaries planned to be the first to introduce Christianity to faraway people. In 1836 a young Scotsman called David Livingstone began to study medicine in Glasgow.Livingstone intended to become a medical missionary. This means that he would be a doctor, as well as a preacher and teacher.Livingstone (1813-1873) came from a poor family. From an early age, he had worked 14 hours a day in a clothing factory for very little pay.But he was determined to learn. He took his books with him to the factory and read as he worked. Then, after work, he would go to his teacher to learn more.Livingstone's goal was to teach faraway people about Jesus. However, unlike some missionaries, he was also interested in science, geography and exploring. He had planned to go to China in 1839, but because of the Opium Wars no missionaries were being sent there.Instead, he asked to go to South Africa.Europeans had traveled around the coasts of Africa for hundreds of years. But very few white people had traveled inland.A missionary named Robert Moffatt who had begun a mission at Kuruman in the interior inspired Livingstone.Livingstone arrived in Kuruman in 1841.This was the farthest outpost of white settlement, and no one seemed to want to go further inland.Livingstone felt that the missionaries should go to the Africans, rather than waiting for the Africans to come to them. With a fellow missionary he set out. When they came to an African tribe, they would talk to the chief and ask permission to preach to his people.Livingstone would also set up a tent and treat the people who had diseases. After a while, he would move on to the next tribe.Once Livingstone learned the Bantu language he would talk to many Africans. But sometimes he needed interpreters. There were many diseases, including malaria and sleeping sickness.Livingstone suffered much of his life from river fever. He was also so weak that he rode on the back of an ox.Livingstone wanted to stop the slave trade. At this time, the slave trade was the most profitable business in Africa.Livingstone hoped that if other kinds of trade were developed, then slavery could be abolished. In order to open up trade, he wanted to find an easy route into the center of Africa.Livingstone kept going further into the interior. He was probably the first European to cross the Kalahari Desert before reaching Lake Ngami in present-day Botswana. Not long after, he traveled further inland. He explored the sources of the Zambesi and Kasai rivers and eventually reached the west coast of Africa at Luanda, Angola.Livingstone was being criticized for neglecting missionary work in order to explore.Livingstone replied that he was opening up the continent for missionaries.Meanwhile, he was becoming famous as a great explorer. The British government commissioned him to explore the Zambesi River. They hoped that ships could sail up the river into the interior.Unfortunately, the Zambesi had too many rapids. However, Livingstone did find a route up the Shire River to Lake Nyassa. He continued to struggle against the slave trade which was now being taken over by Arabs.Livingstone died in Africa in 1873.He was the first white man to explore Botswana Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and surrounding areas. He was not only a great explorer, but also a fine doctor and a good missionary.Nowadays, the countries that Livingstone visited are nearly all Christian--just as he hoped they would be.

Ian Marchant tracks the River Ancholme to its source. Others might prefer the Limpopo or the Zambesi, but Ian is drawn to the subtle mysteries of the canal-like Ancholme in Lincolnshire, arguing that there are delights to be found if you take a close look in your own back yard. And there are plenty of delights. If historic boats are your thing then there's Humber Sloop Amy Howson, an ochre-sailed ship moored at the mouth of the Ancholme, in the care of the Humber Keels and Sloop Preservation Society, or Brigg Raft, a five metre Bronze age raft designed specifically for the slow moving waters of the Ancholme. Brigg was always, it seems, a good place to keep a boat. The town is an island, created by two channels of the Ancholme encircling its centre. Brigg Raft and the even more astounding Brigg Log Boat (nearly fifteen metres long) were discovered in 1886, lurking in mud at the site of what is now Glanford Boat Club. There are still around fifty boats moored at Glanford Boat Club, a vibrant social centre. Just off the course of the Ancholme is Stow Minster, which has, etched into its stone, two images of Viking longships: further evidence of visitors by boat to central Lincolnshire. But will Ian make it to the source in the Lincolnshire Wolds? And how would he know if he got there? Produced for BBC Audio by Mary Ward-Lowery

This week I'm focusing on America and Americans who fought in the war. What made Americans travel half way around the world to fight for both the Boers and the English? The initial answer is obvious - given the Boer's attempts at forging independence from the British Empire, something the Americans had done one hundred and 30 years before. “I have been absorbed in interest in the Boer War,” wrote Theodore Roosevelt to his friend Cecil Spring Rice in 1899. “The Boers are belated Cromwellians, with many fine traits. They deeply and earnestly believe in their cause, and they attract the sympathy which always goes to the small nation. … But it would be for the advantage of mankind to have English spoken south of the Zambesi just as in New York; and as I told one of my fellow Knickerbockers the other day, as we let the Uhlanders of old in here, I do not see why the same rule is not good enough in the Transvaal.” He was not alone. Most Americans took a keen interest in this remote conflict, many espoused the same belief in what they earnestly believed was the British civilising influence in Southern Africa. Two years later later, though the former Senator and now president Roosevelt wrote: “I am not an Anglomaniac any more than I am an Anglophobe … but I am keenly alive to the friendly countenance England gave us in 1898. … I have been uncomfortable about the Boer War, and notably in reference to certain details of the way it was brought on; but I have far too lively a knowledge of our national shortcomings to wish to say anything publicly that would hamper or excite feeling against a friendly nation for which I have a hearty admiration and respect.” That contradiction was played out across the USA. Leading newspapers sent their correspondents to the front; the war was debated in Congress and discussed in Cabinet meetings; private organisations sprang up to help one side or the other; a surprising number of Americans actually made their way to South Africa and joined the fight; and toy stores stocked up on two new games, one called “Boer and Briton” and the other “The War in South Africa”. In addition, the United States sold the British tens of thousands of tons of preserved meat, hay, and oats as well as horses, mules and oxen. Boers and their friends in America tried to prevent such sales, and the Chicago branch of the American Transvaal League and the Boer Legislative Committee of Philadelphia lodged formal protests with Washington. Although publishing legend and businessman William Randolph Hearst thought Britain should win—because as he put it “civilization and progress demand it”—most American publishers and their newspapers were pro-Boer. For Example, the man who gave us the Pulitzer prize, Joseph Pulitzer's New York World sided with the Boers and favoured American mediation. It even worked up a petition to the President urging this which was signed by 19 bishops and archbishops, 104 out of 442 members of Congress, 89 college presidents, 13 mayors of important cities, and many distinguished judges, editors, and businessmen.

Created by award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, the super suit draws plenty of inspiration from the comics, from the flowing red wig to the mask to the dramatic cape. With her lips curled in a menacing grimace, Batwoman sports an all-black costume with a red bat symbol and red belt to match her wig. Other hints of red, like the piping on her gauntlets and the ombre fade of her cape, complete the look. With the caption "Wednesday/Thursday," the biggest difference between the two is that Amell's beard is gone in the Thursday image. During a recent interview, Amell told ComicBook.com that when the beard was no longer absolutely essential for the show's storytelling, he would shave down to a goatee and see how it looked -- but that he would not keep it if it would not look good on camera. It appears as though either he decided it did not look good on camera, or maybe the story called for him to more fully shave than he had anticipated. https://comicbook.com/dc/2018/09/28/arrow-star-stephen-amell-has-shaved-his-beard/ GENERAL DC NEWS: 'Constantine: The Legend Continues' Animated Movie to Air in October (Date: 27 Sept 2018) The CW has revealed the Constantine: The Legend Continues, the animated series created for CW Seed and starring DC's Legends of Tomorrow's Matt Ryan in his role as John Constantine, will air on the network in October. Following the movie's broadcast debut, cast and producers from DC's Legends of Tomorrow will discuss the upcoming season and give fans a sneak peek at season four, which will debut the following week. Constantine: The Legend Continues will air on Monday, October 15 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. https://comicbook.com/dc/2018/09/28/constantine-the-legend-continues-animated-movie-to-air-in-octobe/ DC TV Watch: 'Legends of Tomorrow' Showrunner Breaks Down All the Season 4 Changes (Date: 29 Sept 2018) . Hollywood Reporter interviewed executive producer Phil Klemmer about Legends season 4. Larger theme: In the cases-of-the-week, the Legends (and audience) will discover that everything they think they know about magical creatures and monsters is wrong. "We are far more interested in finding a nuance in these monsters and turning myths and legends on their heads," Klemmer adds. "We are finding out what fairytales got wrong about various magical creatures and monsters. Some of the ones that are supposed to be magical are murderous and vice versa." The crossover: "I don't know how that will work. There's already a loose shape for it even though this year's crossover isn't done by a long shot. I was happy to have sit this year out just because we only have 16 and our run of episodes was so tight and integrated. It's always a blast but it is a departure. I'm glad we got to do a straight run this year." The future: "We virtually change genres over the course of four seasons but the one-hour comedy is something I have always loved doing and the fact that this show organically turned into one really surprised me. Maybe we'll go back to being a hard-core, super serious, straight CBS procedural by the time we get to season six. Nobody is making demands of us, nobody is saying no to us, studio or network, so we're willfully wacky, odd and out-of-step with everything else on TV." https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/legends-tomorrow-phil-klemmer-season-4-primer-1147795 NEXT EPISODE Link to Promo: (Date: 2 April 2018) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4kFawHY2I0&vl=en Episode: “The Good, the Bad and the Cuddly” [Season 3 Episode 18] Air Date: Monday, April 9, 2018 Summary: Rip is forced to improvise when the Legends' plan to vanquish Mallus with the totems doesn't work. This week is the first of two ‘Sunrise Island’ special episodes of Open The Pod Bay Doors. A few weeks ago, the Innovation Bay team along with over 1000 founders, investors, students & enthusiasts, set-sail for the infamous Cockatoo Island, also known as, Sunrise Island.Blackbird Ventures annual conference was back, bigger and better than ever. The day long event featured inspiring keynote speakers, an abundance of workshops (powered by Zambesi), mentor sessions with Startmate, and plenty of opportunities to network. You could feel a real buzz on the island as the best of #startupaus caught up with old and new faces in the ecosystem.Sunrise is the celebration of Australian startup founders. Sunrise organiser and Blackbird Head of Community, Joel Connolly said it best. “It’s time to start celebrating startup founders in the same way we celebrate artists, sports heroes, and politicians.”In that same vein, in the next two episodes we strive to highlight and share the successes and learnings of founders and others within the vibrant community. And so, with mics-in-hand, Ian and Phaedon set out to speak with as many people as they could, interviewing the keynote speakers of the day and chatting with a bunch of Sunrise Island dwellers. In this episode we talked to main stage speakers:Laurie Yoler, Zoox:Phaedon caught up with Laurie (and the seagulls!) just before she hit the main stage. Goodbye, Rip. I’ll miss you. Synopsis We pick up right where we left the Legends last: Zambesi 1992. Mallus has just emerged in his true form and the Legends attempt to use the totems, individually, against him. Sara asks Rip for help and he uses a desperate gambit to save the team. He takes the time drive from the Waverider and shares an emotional goodbye with Gideon. While the Legends return to the Waverider, Rip confronts Mallus with the time drive and waits for it to destabilize, consuming them both. Sara decides to return to Salvation 1874, a blind spot in the timeline, to hide from Mallus and form a plan. When they arrive, she leaves Ray on the Waverider with Damien Darhk, but not for long. Ray comes up with a wild plan to save Nora and after punching out Nate, he returns to the time they just left with Damien. Nate returns to the library to tell Amaya about Ray and finds her about to take a trip to speak with her ancestors about defeating Mallus. Nate, feeling guilty, takes a large gulp of the psychedelic tea and joins her. They discover the totem bearers have to join their totems together to create a being of light to defeat the darkness of Mallus. Just when the whiskey is beginning to give Sara a few ideas, an army of Romans, pirates and vikings waltz into the town of Salvation. So much for hiding. Mallus has sent Caesar, Blackbeard and Freydis to retrieve the totems from the Legends. The team regroups on the Waverider and Amaya shares what she has discovered from her ancestors: they have to create Voltron (essentially). Reluctantly, Sara agrees to give it a try and the team heads outside to create Voltron. Unfortunately, with their minds linked the team cannot concentrate and create a monster instead of a savior. Mick smartly puts it out of its misery and Sara concludes they are not worthy to wield the totems. Ava picks the perfect time to arrive with reinforcements: Helen of Amazon, Jax and Kuasa. And my how things have changed! Kuasa is a good person and shares the Spirit totem with Mari. Saving Zambesi has completely changed her path. Helen has been training on Themyscira and has some impressive fighting skills. Jax has been apart from the team for five years and now has a wife and child. Ava, in a lovely speech, explains to Sara that the Legends must wield the totems, they are simply there to back them up. Ray picks the not so perfect time to walk into the saloon with Nora. When they returned to Zambesi, Damien shot Nora with the nanite gun and Mallus took his body instead of Nora’s. While Ray rushes Nora back to the Waverider to save her life, Mallus emerges from Damien’s body and history continues as we saw it unfold in the previous episode. Nora, now de-Mallused, has come to help the Legends defeat Mallus. Sara gears up for battle with another great speech and pretends to surrender the totems to buy some time. The Legends get in position and begin an epic battle against pirates, Romans and vikings. They emerge victorious, momentarily, until all the “dead” start stirring. Mallus can reanimate the dead. Who knew. Our reinforcements buy team Legends some time as they regroup and attempt to create a pure being of light. They succeed. A giant Beebo doll emerges and lumbers toward Mallus. Dumbfounded, the non-totem bearers follow Beebo to witness the final battle. Beebo explodes, victorious, in a heart-shaped puff of blue smoke. (So that happened.) The finale episode proceeds to tie all the storylines up in a neat little bow. Kuasa takes the totems, Ava and Sara promise to see each other soon, Jax says goodbye, Jonah gives his hat to Zari, Ray gives Nora a time stone and Amaya says goodbye. She has finally accepted she must leave Nate and the Legends and return to 1942. In the final scene, the Legends finally make it to Aruba. Unfortunately, their relaxation is interrupted by Gary and Constantine with a clue as to what next season might be about: demons. Well, that’s it folks, Mallus is out of the time cage. Beebo help us all. Synopsis The team’s on double duty this week with Amaya attempting to rewrite history while Grodd attacks Barack Obama. The Legends make quick work of Grodd when Ray shrinks him down and puts him in a jar. Grodd’s failure keeps Mallus at bay, to Nora’s disappointment, but Damien realizes that once Mallus is freed, Nora will be gone. Worried, he reaches out to the Legends for help. If only Wally and Nate’s task of convincing Amaya not to change history was as easy. She insists she will save her village and does not want Nate or Wally to interfere. Nate witnesses older Amaya start a totem ceremony to pass the Anansi totem to her daughter, Esi. Unfortunately, Esi is not up to the task and sends Kuasa with Baby Mari to explain to Amaya that she will not be coming. Delighted, 1942 Amaya now knows this is how she can save her people. But at what cost? Back on the Waverider, Damien Darhk offers the water totem as a peace offering and tries to convince the Legends they need to work together to keep Mallus imprisoned and save his daughter. Sara seeks counsel from both Ava and Barry, and in the end, decides to accept Damien’s help. But how? Well, as it so happens, Mick has discovered the Lord of the Rings films and Denethor sounds remarkably like Mallus. (Gee, I wonder why?) Ray heads off to New Zealand 1999 to convince John Noble to read some revised lines for the film. (This is crap, isn’t it?) Ray records the performance and tags along with Damien to convince Nora that Mallus is speaking to her. Playing along, Damien goes along with her suggestion to travel to the Waverider where she is trapped with Constantine’s spell. Angered, Mallus pushes Nora further into the spirit world and takes over her body. Meanwhile in Zambesi, Amaya convinces her daughter to stand-up and accept her birthright. Her people need her to protect them. At the same time, Nate attempts to take the older Amaya’s totem, preventing her from passing it to Esi, and fails. Epically. After stumbling around, he tries to take the totem and it activates, waking Amaya who’s still got it. Before she kills him, he tries to make her remember him and realizes she must have wiped her memory when she left the Legends. When Nate eventually sides with Amaya, Wally returns to the Waverider and explains to the team what is happening. Oddly enough, Sara concludes they should let Mallus out because it may be the only way to kill him once and for all. After all, they do have all six totems and Damien offers to wield Death so Sara doesn’t have to. Everyone heads to Zambesi and waits for Esi to defeat the warlords. Only there is one not so teeny tiny (anymore) problem: Damien has brought Grodd along to prevent the Legends from rewriting history and letting Mallus out of the time cage. Can’t they understand? He just wants the village to die so he can save his daughter. Nate uses the Earth totem and stops Grodd from destroying the village. Damien has released Nora from the spell circle and seconds later the time cage shatters, along with Nora’s body. Mallus emerges in his true form and disappears, leaving the Legends and Damien in dismay. Sara wields the Death Totem and becomes the Death Witch after Mallus possesses her. She singles out the Legends and takes them down one-by-one only to be stopped by an unlikely hero: Heat Wave. Synopsis Sara wakes from a nightmare in which she is haunted by a little girl. Ava calms her down and they have the GF talk, where Sara awkwardly explains away her latest fling, John Constantine. Gideon interrupts at the worst time and announces the anachronisms are getting worse. Back to work. Sara sends the Legends out in pairs to tackle to the anachronisms and suddenly gets a terrible headache. With all of the Legends occupied, Sara makes some coffee and tries to shake her headache, when she decides to follow the source of the sound. As it turns out, the Death totem is calling to her, and she finally gets some relief after she opens the encrypted box holding the totem. Through the Death totem, Mallus projects Sara as the Canary and she talks herself into wielding the Death totem. Unfortunately, that’s all Mallus wanted, and he takes over her body, imprisoning the Sara Lance we know in the spirit realm. Death Witch Sara starts by taking out Ray, since Mick is sound asleep in the library. Amaya and Zari return to find Ray, badly injured, and wake-up Rory to help them deal with Ray’s attacker. They soon learn it is Sara, but not the Captain they have come to know and love. When Amaya and Mick try to take her on, she nearly kills them, and Wally speeds in and saves them. Their plan, after Sara locks down the ship and maroons them in the time stream, is for Wally to use his speed and tie Sara up. Unfortunately, Wally encounters the Death totem’s version of Jessie. He confronts her, hopefully finding some much needed closure, but he is distracted and does not notice the anti-speedster gun. Jessie fades, revealing Sara holding the gun, and she shoots Wally. Meanwhile, Ava and Gary are doing their best to find John Constantine, the only person who might be able to save Sara from Mallus. Ava reveals to Constantine that Sara is wielding the Death totem and Constantine explains why Mallus has a particularly strong bond with that totem. Apparently, the Sixth Tribe of Zambesi was lost to time because they sided with Mallus in the war that ultimately imprisoned him. When Constantine and Ava try to enter Mallus’s realm, he denies them entry, forcing them to find another way to rescue Sara. Back on the Waverider, it’s Zari’s turn to come-up with a plan and she heads to the mainframe, hoping to free the jump ship from whatever lock-down Sara has initiated. But Mallus is two steps ahead, and Zari is confronted by her dead brother, as a child begging for her to tell his favorite nighttime story. Knowing he isn’t there, she says goodbye to him and turns to smash the mainframe. She succeeds, but a blast knocks her down and suddenly Sara is there and nearly kills her too. For a moment, Zari gets through and Sara breaks Mallus’s hold, if only for a few seconds. Nora appears and compliments her resolve, but tells her “no one can fight Mallus forever.” Luckily, Gary has a plan! Don’t laugh, but he has played this campaign before. There’s a monk (Wally), a druid (Amaya), a rogue (Mick), a bard (Nate), “a cheerful gnome who was also an accomplished wizard” (Ray), and a missing sorceress (Zari), who are all fighting Xanathar the Unburnt and his death sword (Sara/Mallus and the Death Totem). How do you win? (You don’t, but...) you can fight the totem with another totem. Back on the Waverider, it’s Nate’s turn to get his butt kicked. He attempts to wield the Earth totem, but before he can put it on, his grandfather distracts him. He knows his grandfather is dead, he watched him die after all, but he is still pulled into Mallus’s trap and Sara gets the upper hand. Constantine turns up on the Waverider just in time to save Nate from being beaten to death. He has some tricks up his sleeve, but Mallus still gets the upper hand, even after trying to distract him with Astra. Before he can finish him off, Amaya convinces Mick to wield the Fire totem and Mallus drops Constantine to handle this “new” threat. Just as Sara appears, Mick tosses a fireball at her and knocks her out. In the spirit realm, Sara is having a discussion with Nora about the darkness within. She relives her worst memory: murdering a little girl’s father right in front of her. On the Waverider, Ava is trying to reach out to Sara, begging her to return from the spirit realm. Assuming the Fire totem has scared off Mallus, Ava calls Sara back to her body after ripping off the Death totem. Unfortunately, this experience has reminded Sara of all her faults that she has worked so hard to put behind her. Afraid of hurting Ava, she breaks things off, but immediately regrets it. In the final scene, John Constantine plays D&D with Gary’s crew and states “the battle is only just beginning.” Something tells me he wasn’t just talking about the game… Extras EW Recap of Necromancing the Stone Contact Information If you want to join in the discussion, you can submit feedback via email to tomorowslegends@gmail.com. Seattle 2042. Our not so distant future has outlawed religion and metahumans, trading freedom for the safety of a police state patrolled by ARGUS. The Legends are introduced to Zari, a hacker, who inherited one of the Anansi totems from Zambesi. Synopsis The Legends intercept Gary’s distress call after he witnesses Kuasa kill two ARGUS guards transporting a prisoner. Kuasa is after their prisoner, Zari Tomaz, who possesses the Anansi totem which controls the wind. The Legends “rescue” Gary before Agent Sharpe can send back-up and track Zari to her hideout. Unfortunately, an ARGUS drone follows the Legends, trapping them at the hideout. Zari hacks the drone so she can escape while the Legends are stuck. Fortunately, getting out of these situations is their specialty. The Legends regroup on the Waverider where Jax discovers Zari has quite the rap sheet. Rory seems impressed and knows what her next move will be: head to the bar. The Legends join Zari at the bar and Kuasa shows up just after them. Jax and Zari head back to the Waverider while Sara and Rory start a bar fight with Kuasa. Back on the Waverider, Gary spills the beans, telling Zari that the Legends are time travellers, and she bargains with them. In exchange for using her as bait for Kuasa, she wants them to help break her brother out of prison. ARGUS prison. But there’s a twist! It turns out Zari’s brother is dead and the only reason she wanted to break into the prison is to recover a totem her brother wielded. While there, Jax and Ray witness how the metas in the prison are being treated, and Jax decides to let them all go. So much for not changing history. With the totem in her possession, she activates it and flies away. Meanwhile, back on the Waverider, Nate has a great idea to help Amaya: hallucinogenic tea! Since her problem is mystical, not scientific, he decides a vision quest is the best way to help her. They both drink the tea and have very different experiences: Amaya communes with her ancestors and learns that her powers are gaining strength because of a growing evil; Nate goes on a wild ride filled with Cheetos and Star Trek references. While tracks Zari, the rest of the team return to the Waverider to regroup. Unfortunately, Gary has contacted Agent Sharpe and revealed their location. Agent Sharpe pays the Legends an unexpected visit in a giant time ship and threatens to shoot them out of the time stream. Kuasa, who is now a water metahuman, has found Ray and Zari and tries to reason with her to get the totem. When that doesn’t work, she tries to drown Ray and fights with Zari. In the end, most of the Legends come to the rescue and Amaya makes Kuasa back down through the use of the spirit totem. Kuasa, confused at first, realizes who Amaya must be and disappears, using another rune to travel through time. In the end, Amaya realizes (through her vision quest) that she is connected to Zari because they both wield Anansi totems. She offers Zari a place on Team Legends and she accepts. A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
This week on "A Way with Words": This week on "A Way with Words": Can language change bad behavior in crowded places? The Irish Railway system has launched ad campaign to encourage passengers to be more generous at boarding time. For example, have you ever rummaged through your belongings or pretended to have an intense phone conversation in order to keep someone from grabbing the seat next to you? Then you're busted -- there's a word for that! Also, one of America's top experts on garage sales is looking for the right term for that kind of bargain-hunting. Is it garage-sailing? Yard-selling? Or something else? Plus, a Godfather-themed word game you can't refuse. And conversational openers, see-saw vs. teeter-totter, ledged out, scartling, trade-last, and beat the band. FULL DETAILS If you're the type of person who wants so badly to sit alone on a train that you have strategies for deterring other passengers from taking the seat next to yours, the Irish train system is onto you. Irish Rail's #GiveUpYourSeat campaign has posters all over trains warning people about frummaging (pretending to rummage through your bag in the seat next to yours) and snoofing (spoof snoozing). The guy who may be the nation's foremost garage sale expert called us from Crescent City, California, with a question that's vital for anyone writing or thinking about garage sales: Do the verbs garage-saling or yard-saling refer to the person holding the sale or the shopper visiting the sale? Someone who looks like the wreck of Hesperus isn't exactly looking their best. The idiom comes from a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem, inspired by an 1839 blizzard off the coast of Massachusetts that destroyed 20 ships. Quiz Guy John Chaneski presented a word game we couldn't refuse based on the line in The Godfather, "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." Except in this game, he can't refuse is replaced with other words that rhyme. There's no one correct way to pronounce buried, but depending on where you live, it might be common to hear it in a way that rhymes with hurried. As the spelling of the word changed from the original old English version, byrgan, no single standard pronunciation was settled on. A mobile-phoney, as defined by the Irish rail system's new ad campaign, is someone on a train who pretends to be having a phone conversation in order to prevent fellow passengers from taking the seat next to them. The exhortation in Shakespeare's Henry V, "Once more unto the breach, dear friends," is now a part of common speech. But not every fan of the Bard knows what a breach is. It's simply a gap—a space between two things. Scartle is an old Scots word meaning to scrape together little bits of things, like picking the coins and crumbs out of a car seat. Bill Cosby is perhaps the latest but certainly not the first celebrity whom the public has fallen out of love with over something terrible they did that went public. Is there a term for this kind of mass disenchantment with a celebrity? Goggle-bluffing is the train passenger's trick of averting your line of eyesight so as to fool other passengers into not taking the seat next to you. The first occasion when a new mother sees company after having a baby is called the upsitting. But upsitting in certain cultures is also used to describe a courtship ritual where two people on either sides of a thin partition get to flirt with each other. William Charles Baldwin talks about it in his book, African Hunting, From Natal to Zambesi. What do you call the piece of playground equipment with a long board and spots for a kid to sit on either end and make it go up and down? A see-saw? A teeter-totter? A flying jenny, or a joggling board? The term you're most familiar with likely has to do with where you grew up. When hiking off-trail, it's important to keep an eye on where you've been as well as where you're going. Otherwise, you run the risk of what experienced hikers call being ledged out, which means you've descended to a point where you can't go any farther, but you've slid down so far that you can't go back up and try a different route. It's a good metaphor for life as well. A trade-last, also known as a told-last, is a compliment that's relayed to the intended recipient by someone else. We've spoken on the show before about conversation openers that differ from the often dreaded "What do you do?" and we heard from one listener who prefers "What keeps you busy?" Beat the band, as in, it's snowing to beat the band, or he's dressed to beat the band, is an idiom that's mainly used as a positive intensifier. It evolved from shouting to beat the band, meaning someone is talking so loudly they can be heard over the music. Billennials, or bilingual millennials, is a new term being bandied about by marketers and television programmers who've realized that young Americans who grew up in Spanish-speaking homes don't necessarily care for the traditional telenovela style shows on Spanish language networks.
