In this episode, Danielle Hayden, CPA and founder of Kickstart Accounting, Inc., sits down with Interior Designer and Eye for Pretty Owner Nicole Salceda for a candid conversation about small business growth and finance. Together, they deep dive into the journey of rightsizing a business, shifting from a "grow at all costs" mentality to building a business that aligns with your values, lifestyle, and personal priorities. Nicole shares how she transitioned from saying "yes" to every opportunity to becoming intentional about the projects she takes on, the team she builds, and the way she manages her time. Her journey and insights are proof you don't have to hustle more, do more, or “catch up” to someone to have a fulfilling and sustainable business. Key Takeaways: Growth Doesn't Always Have to Be the Goal: Scaling a business can be exciting, but true success comes from building a business that aligns with your lifestyle and values. Making Smart Financial Decisions: Know Your Numbers! It's easy to focus on revenue, but understanding expenses, profit margins, and cash flow is what truly leads to financial confidence. Business Seasonality - Managing the Highs & Lows: Every business has ups and downs. Learning how to anticipate slow seasons and plan accordingly can ease financial stress. Letting Go of Emotional & Ego-Driven Decisionmaking: Making choices based on what truly serves you and concrete data, rather than what looks impressive to others or how you feel without the numbers to back it up, leads to greater fulfillment and success. Topics Discussed: Scaling vs. Rightsizing Your Business (00:00:43 – 00:05:18) Shifting from Reactive to Intentional Financial Decisions (00:05:18 – 00:11:28) Navigating Seasonality and Cash Flow Challenges (00:11:28 – 00:14:44) The Mindset Shift from Hustle Culture to Purpose-Driven & Value-Aligned Entrepreneurship (00:15:02 – 00:22:01) References: Eye for Pretty | https://www.eyeforpretty.com/ Book a Call with Kickstart Accounting, Inc.: https://www.kickstartaccountinginc.com/book Connect with Kickstart Accounting, Inc.: Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/Kickstartaccounting YouTube | https://www.youtube.com/@businessbythebooks Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/kickstartaccountinginc

EPISODE 114 | All Your Base Are Belong to Us – US Military Installations The United States spends more on their military than the next nine countries combined. With around 450 bases (or maybe 500 or maybe 750 or maybe 800 or even more) operating more than 111,000 installations in 80 or more countries, there's a lot to keep track of. In fact, no one is really sure how accurate those numbers are, since a lot of places are deemed classified or even top secret, and yes, cover stories have sometimes been deployed. Some of the things we do know about are pretty interesting and often sad or infuriating, depending on your outlook. And yet that's not enough for some folks, who feel the need to fill in the gaps with long, complicated conspiracy narratives that are better suited to novels than anywhere else. Like what we do? Always Have a Backup Losing my initial lender also taught me always to have a backup plan–not only for my financing but for the investment as a whole. 2023 is halfway done, which means it's time for our mid-year check-in! For this week's episode, grab a pen and paper because it's time for a self assessment. The five categories that I go over are not only meant to help you see where you can improve, but to help you realize all that you have actually accomplished! What is the most important consideration when launching a podcast? This question was posed to me recently, and I thought my trifecta answer of your why, your ecosystem, and your plate was applicable to all podcasters–whether you are preparing for episode 1, 100, or 1,000 of your show. In order to be sure you are hitting your audience and content targets, you need to look at your show with fresh eyes every-so-often. And, that is what we are going to do today. I will explain the different sides of the all-important “why” question, breakdown the various pieces of your ecosystem, and help you figure out how much of your plate you can devote to your show moving forward. And, along the way, I reveal my thoughts on all three for myself, and how they impacted the changes you are going to experience with the future of this show. At the end of this episode, you will be able to orient (or, reorient) your podcast–just like I have–to hit its full potential! It's my next Podcasting 101 topic kicking off Season 3 for you today. For some time now I've been ending each episode by encouraging you to spread a little relational sunshine with the people you meet. Today's episode gives you some examples of what this looks like. It will give you some ideas you can try out on your own. She got me when she called me “sweetheart” I'll begin with a story of relational sunshine that happened to me recently at the drive-through window of Wendy's. Not exactly a place I can say I've ever experienced the warm rays of relational sunshine before. It's usually been more a place of darkened skies with heavy fog rolling in. But this day was different. When I got to the window and paid my bill a middle-aged woman with black horned-rim glasses leaned out the window a bit, handed me my food, and said with a really big smile, “Here you go sweetheart. Now you go have a great rest of your day.” She got me the moment she called me “sweetheart.” I'm a sucker for any matronly middle-aged woman who calls me that. Those brief words of hers, together with her toothy smile were the relational sunshine that brightened my otherwise cloudy afternoon. Smile more A few days after this, I had a conversation with my granddaughter who turned 17 recently. She works part-time at Target and when I asked her how it was going she said, “My boss said he is happy with my work, but that I need to smile more with customers.” “It sounds like you have a good boss,” I said. Have you ever noticed how many teenagers work at Target? One of our grandsons also works there. I was thinking about this one day and how all these young faces unknowingly spread a little relational sunshine my way - even when they're not smiling. They don't have tattoos, nose rings, or purple hair, at least I haven't noticed anyone like this so far. It's not that I have anything against anyone who fits this profile. In fact, in episode 129 I talk about someone in her mid-20s who looks like this and how I apologized for scaring her. I described the scene as follows: She was wearing torn blue jean shorts, tattoos up and down both arms, a bare midriff with a ring in her navel, and another one in her nose. Her partially pink hair was in a bun on top of her head. I felt like I needed to represent old men who look down their noses at tattooed young women with rings in their noses. I didn't want her to think badly of us. If you're interested in how I unintentionally scared the girl, go to johncertalic.com/129 They'll be in charge some day Anyway, back to the teenagers who work at Target. There's an innocence about them that reminds me of my own part-time job from another century when I was in high school. It's where I found hope that my future was going to be better than my past. When I see those youthful faces stocking shelves and checking customers out at the cash register at Target it gives me a different kind of hope that somehow down the road we're all going to be okay because these kids will be in charge. I'm reminded they could all be at the beach right now, or in their bedrooms playing video games. But instead, they are giving up those pleasures to earn money that will help them take control of their lives. Relational sunshine at night More relational sunshine shone down on me at a recent baseball game I attended with my family. Like all major league baseball stadiums, ours here in Milwaukee requires fans to go through security before entering the ballpark. On this particular game night after I made it through to the other side, one of the security people said in the most sincerest of tones, and with a big smile on his face, “Enjoy the game!” He was an older man, probably retired, working a part-time job to pick up a few extra bucks. His countenance and persona in wishing me an enjoyable evening cast a few rays of relational sunshine my way. They left me smiling, too. I could tell he was sincere and enjoyed greeting people and wishing them well. These three examples of others spreading a little relational sunshine got me thinking about how I operate. I'm not an extrovert and usually don't talk to people I don't know. Unless they offer me candy, or a look at a cute little puppy in the back seat of their car. But in reflecting upon these stories I've recounted for you, and how complete strangers brightened my day, it made me think maybe I could do the same for someone else. I can do this, too My chance to do so happened one evening at the drive-through window of yet another fast-food place, Culver's, a nationwide hamburger and custard restaurant based in Wisconsin. It has a special place in my heart as two of our grandsons got their first part-time jobs here. The food isn't half-bad, and like Target, they hire clean-cut wholesome-looking kids - and grandma types. One of the things I appreciate about this chain is that they also hire young people with developmental disabilities, like those with Down's syndrome. Anyway, one evening I was in the drive-through line at Culver's and when I reached the cashier's window the teenage boy manning the window said “…your total is $19.39.” He paused briefly, then said, “That was a long time ago.” Admiring his sense of humor in juxtaposing the numbers of a cash transaction with a period of history, I responded with “Yeah, it was even before I was born.” Then, as I gave the boy a twenty-dollar bill for my order I asked, “Do you know what famous event occurred in 1939?” “I have no idea,” he said. “On September 1, 1939, Nazi Germany marched into Poland, officially beginning World War II,” I replied. The boy smiled for the first time and chuckled as he gave me my change, and said, “Oh, I should have known that. I really like history.” We smiled at each other and then I drove off. By acknowledging his sense of humor and playing along with him, I realized I had spread a little relational sunshine in his life. And I had fun doing so. It sent a few of those relational sunshine rays back to me. So what does all this mean for YOU? I have a hunch there's more relational sunshine out there for all of us, if we just look for it, mostly in unexpected places. Lately for me, it's been at the window of the drive-through lane at fast-food restaurants. How about for you? I wonder what unexpected places in your life could be a source of relational sunshine for you. I also have this thought: you could be more than just a recipient of relational sunshine. You could be a source of it in unexpected ways, as I was with something as simple as bantering with a teenager at Culver's. With something as simple as smiling as someone. I know you can do this, and hope you give it a try. Intentionally smile at someone and see what happens. It might even land you a part-time job at Target. Here's the main takeaway I hope you remember from today's episode It seems that relational sunshine often starts with a smile. The simple act of smiling seems to penetrate the relational ozone separating us from each other. By spreading around a little relational sunshine we spark joy in others, and in ourselves as well. Closing In closing, I'd love to hear any thoughts you have about today's episode. And I hope your thinking was stimulated by today's show, enough to put into practice what you've heard today. For when you do, it will help you experience the joy of relationships God intends for you. Because after all, You Were Made for This. Well, that's it for today. Please consider telling others about this podcast if you think it would be interesting and helpful to them. And of course, don't forget to spread a little relational sunshine around with the people you meet this week. Spark some joy for them. And I'll see you again next time. Today's episode is about being thankful we can be the person God created us to be, in whatever form that may take. It's the third in our Thankfulness series, leading up to Thanksgiving Day next week here in the US. Our Canadian friends beat us to the punch with their own Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October. We started our series with episode 129, Thankful We Don't Always Have to be Right, followed by Thankful We Can Make Memories in Episode 130. I'll have links to each of these at the bottom of the show notes. The story of one strong woman Today we're going to consider a story from the Bible that illustrates an important relational concept we can be thankful for. It's found in the Gospel of Mark, chapter 14, verses 3-9. 3Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head. 4Some of those at the table [i.e, disciples of Jesus, mostly men, including Judas Iscariot] were indignant. "Why waste such expensive perfume?" they asked.5"It could have been sold for a year's wages and the money given to the poor!" So they scolded her harshly. 6But Jesus replied, "Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me? 7You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me.8She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time. 9I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman's deed will be remembered and discussed." What caught my eye in this passage was the last line, 9… this woman's deed will be remembered and discussed. I remembered this story, as I've read it a number of times, but don't ever recall discussing it. Two sisters, different from each other “Who's talking about this story?” I wondered. I then looked at parallel accounts in the other gospels and found the same story in John 12: 1-8 and Matthew 26: 6-13. These two accounts mention the woman in the story is named Mary. She happens to be the sister of Martha, both of whom are sisters of Lazarus. And this is how I found out who's talking about this woman's story. It's other women who are talking. Countless women's bible studies talk about Mary and her sister, Martha. We learn in other places in the gospels that Martha is the practical, task-oriented one, while Mary is the relational more feelings oriented sensitive sister. They both are poster children for being the person God created them to be. There have been a gazillion sermons preached about their relationship, about the priority Mary placed on worshiping Jesus and relating with others, while her sister is slaving away in the kitchen. These sermons always elevate Mary's values over Martha, which really is the main point of this particular story: that our worship and relationship with Jesus are far more far important than our to-do list and completing tasks. I get that. But there is a secondary part of this story that focuses on the character and personality of Mary that I find both interesting and encouraging. In Mary, we see someone who has learned that we can be thankful to be the person God created us to be. Created to be different God created Mary to be different from her practical, task-oriented sister, Martha, and to be different from the mostly male disciples who were equally pragmatic and practical as Martha when it came to how they spent their money. In relating with Jesus, Mary was being the person God created her to be. That doesn't mean she didn't have things to work on in her life. But she was reflecting the character of God well. She was reflecting the hierarchy of God's values in the story I read from the Gospel of Mark. God certainly values feeding the poor and being wise with our finances. But He values worshiping and honoring His son more. Mary was comfortable enough in her own skin to be the person God created her to be in the face of criticism from others. It's one thing to face opposition from outsiders, it's another thing to get it from within your own tribe. From people whose worldview and mission in life is the same as yours, as in Mary's case with her fellow Jesus followers, the disciples. Mary was not a people pleaser, she had to stand up to her sister, and also to the crowd of men who were in the same room as she was in this story. They were all on the same team, yet they had differing values. She must have beena sensitive, yet strong woman to stand up to the peer pressure from these male disciples. When we're not the person God created us to be In reflecting upon this story, it occurred to me that the cost of not being who God created you to be is high. There's a loss when you try to be someone else because who you really are is lost to the world. The contribution God intends for you to make to the world doesn't happen when you're busy trying to be someone you're not. People who could have been blessed when you be the person God created you to be, miss out on that blessing. We create a fertile field of relational dysfunction when we choose not to be the person God created us to be. One way we do this is by selling ourselves short with self-limiting attitudes and behaviors. We impose restrictions on ourselves that God never intended. We say “no” more than “yes” to opportunities to stretch ourselves in becoming the person God created us to be. Another way we create relational dysfunction for ourselves is when we don't respect the limits God placed within us. It's when we think we can do it all, where we say “yes” more than we say “no” to choices that come our way. We ignore the relational principle of every time we say “yes” to something we are saying “no” to something else. It's when we become a people pleaser, thinking our job is to make people happy, even if it's beyond the limits God has set for us to do so. All this happens when we choose not to be the person God created us to be. It is a choice. So what does all this mean for YOU? How can you use what you've heard today to improve the relationships in YOUR life? I would start with the great quote from Oscar Wilde who said, “Be yourself; everyone else is taken.” There's too much pressure to live under when we feel we have to be someone we're not. There's great freedom and joy that comes from resting in the fact we can be the person God created us to be. Like Mary in the story we read, we can be thankful we don't have to be like other people. Even like those close to us like family members or people we work with. The only person we need to please is Jesus. And He will show us how to do so, which may be completely different than the way he shows other people. As long as we're all on the same page with Jesus, We don't have to be like others. And others don't have to be like us. Oh, and one last thought. Let's not be like the disciples in the story I read in the beginning. Don't make it difficult for others to be the person God created them to be. Be their cheerleader instead. Here's the main point I hope you remember from today's episode God created us in his image to reflect his character well, so be thankful we can be the person God created us to be, in whatever form that is. I'd love to hear any thoughts you have about today's episode. Just send them to me in an email to john [at] caringforothers [dot] org. Or you can share your thoughts in the “Leave a Comment” box at the bottom of the show notes. Closing I hope your thinking was stimulated by today's show, to reflect on how you can be thankful to be the person God created you to be. And also to consider how you can help others be the person God created them to be. In doing so, you will find the joy God intends for you through your relationships. Because after all, You Were Made for This. Well, that's all for today. I look forward to connecting with you again next week. Goodbye for now. Transformative Leadership Conversations with Winnie da Silva
Season 2; Episode 4: Leaders Don't Always Have the Answers with Christina Callas Christina Callas is a dynamic digital-retail leader who drives rapid, profitable growth for iconic omnichannel retailers. She especially enjoys growing and maximizing the operating performance for challenging business environments. She is currently the EVP and Chief Digital Officer at Total Wine & More which is known as the country's largest independent retailer of fine wine and spirits operating in over 200 super stores across 23 states – and scaling rapidly. She's worked previously at Children's Place, Hudson's Bay Company and Aeropostale. She has her MBA from Columbia Business School. Key Takeaways from this Episode: You Don't Have All the Answers · Sometimes you need to acknowledge that you don't have all the answers. · You can give people a path forward without having all the answers. Authenticity and Vulnerability · People want to be authentic about who they are at work. · If you are going to ask people to be vulnerable, you must be vulnerable even if it's not your most comfortable state. Leading During the Pandemic · Learning to respect the ways the pandemic impacts people differently and yet also being fair and equitable across the organization. · People have demonstrated tremendous strength as people have navigated their lives during the pandemic. This strength needs to be acknowledged. · In this environment, leaders need to stop and slow down. Leadership Lessons · Ask the next question, listen, let people talk, see what they have to offer. · “Be brief, be bright, be gone”; distill the complexity into that big idea, communicate it well and then go make it happen. · Translate your ideas into a language that the audience can understand. You can't just do good work you also have to sell that idea too. · What's the story; tell the story if you want people to change their behaviors and do business differently. And then model that behavior. Women in Business · We need to ensure that women in businesses are being represented in the workplace, and that everybody has an equal opportunity at mobility within the organization. · Unconscious bias is real and it's pervasive. Don't think you're top of mind for somebody because the work you've done has been great or they complimented you in a meeting. Tell people I'm interested; I want to move up. · As you become more comfortable with yourself you will embrace your unique voice and unique point of view. · When getting feedback that's not helpful, ask questions, find out what they're really trying to tell you. Career Guidance · Raise your hand and say yes. · Find out where you can be helpful, think about what motivates you, seek out pockets of opportunity and then figure out how to fill them. · Let people know you're there and you're interested and ready when the opportunity arises. It's all about timing. · Consider interesting opportunities that pop up even if they might be flawed. · Don't be afraid of lateral moves. · When there's disruptive change in business, some people say, stay the course, we know what we're doing. Other businesses say, the landscape has changed, we've got to go figure out how to meet these new challenges. Think like the second business throughout your career. Ep 108 Depression is a very real and treatable illness. But myths, misunderstandings, and stigma continue to be barriers to treatment for many, and the consequences of untreated depression can be life-threatening. Understanding the facts about depression, on the other hand, can save lives. Here are seven things everyone should know about depression and depressive disorders. Depression Doesn't Always Have a "Good" Reason Sometimes people become depressed for what seems like a "good" reason—maybe they lost their job or a close friend passed away—but with clinical depression, there doesn't necessarily have to be a reason for how you feel. The chemicals in the brain that are responsible for mood control may be out of balance causing you to feel bad even though everything in your life is going well. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hollywoodandchinadollshow/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hollywoodandchinadollshow/support
In talking with new and seasoned podcasters I often hear questions that lead me to believe that people think they can "break" their podcast. Today I talk about a few questions I've heard and how 99% of the time you're not going to break your show. We also have a question of the month The Separate Track Challenge I have recommended Squadcast for years. The ease of use and the ability to have separate tracks of you and your guest makes it my go-to choice for remote recordings. then later I got a Rodcaster Pro which ( Along with the Zoom P4, and the Zoom P8) allow you to record separate tracks. I can be on track one, and my guest can be on a separate track. The question then is: Does the separate track recorded locally on the guest's computer (and uploaded to Squadcast) sound that much better than the same track that has traveled over the internet? I also had my guest join me on Zoom as I know a lot of people are using Zoom to record interviews. Nuts and Bolts of Remote Recording The zoom recording is sampled at 32 kHz where Squadcast records at 48 khz. (This is how many times per second a picture is taken of your audio - the higher the number the better the sound). For me, the zoom recording while listenable sounds "fuzzy" compared to the Squadcastrecording (which makes sense as it has a higher sample rate. Also, Squdcast provides a WAV file that is better than the m4a (variable bit rate - another "no-no" for podcasting) from Zoom. If you're going to use the m4a from Zoom, be sure to edit it, and export as an mp3 with a contact bit rate. When I compared the original Squadcast file to the one I recorded (after coming across the Internet) and there again was a slight degradation of the file (not quite as crisp). Another Benefit of Squadcast In my test, as my guest was talking the Internet slightly broke up the audio is it made its way to me. If I had been using the recording on the Rodecaster this "Glitch" would be in the recording. With the original Squdcast fie, the glitch is not there (as that recording goes from their microphone to their hard drive, and then uploaded to Squadcast. Always Have a Backup Recording Of Your Interview The other advantage of using a tool like Squadcast is in the event the recording has an issue with the Rodecaster I have Squadcast as a backup. If there is a glitch with Squadcast, I've got my hardware option as a backup. No matter what you are using to record your remote interviews, always have two systems recording. It's not a matter of if one will fail, but when. For me, Squadcast is the most reliable. School of Podcasting Moving to a New Platform Thinkific is charging me per student (and I'm not a fan of that) so I've looked at Kajabi, Teachable, and Podia . Currently, I feel Kajabi is cool, but I'm not a fan of their limits to the number of products, and I'm learning more about Podia as they allow you to sell digital products, membership sites, and courses. They also have an affiliate program. With Teachable if I use their affiliate program, I have to pay them 2%, and with Podia you pay your monthly fee, and that is it. No extra fees. Grow an Online Business - A weekly step by step story of an online business startup as it happens.
Always Have a Minimum Offer It is imperative to have a minimum offer for customers. Here's why. When people have to spend any amount of time thinking about something it can create "action paralysis" causing them to shut down and not make a decision, they may even put it off and never actually make it. But having a minimum offer for them to choose to start with it lets them off the hook with an easy choice. This is better for them and you. Giving people a small choice or minimum offer to choose from, allows them to say yes to you or your service. This is important for several reasons. First, it makes them a customer or client. When people are customers or clients, they begin to experience a sense of loyalty toward you if you give them a feeling of receiving value. Second, it gets your foot in the door. When people say yes to you, your product, or service, they become more likely to say yes to a larger request. Especially when they feel they are going to continue to get valuable information, goods, or services from you. Be sure to check out Broken Moon Media for more information on small business marketing and other ways to grow an online business. Be sure to leave any Podcast feedback on our Facebook Page!

Today we're launching a brand-new series looking at the role of honesty in getting the most out of our time alone with God, and the most out of life. And may newfound freedom be the fruit in our hearts and lives. Our Scripture for today comes from 1 Peter 3:10, and today's worship is Always Have by Vertical Worship. Christmas is a time where we as believers celebrate God's heart to write himself into our story. Prior to Jesus we had no real picture of God's love. All we had to know him by was through stories of old and commandments written into law. But only in Jesus was a pathway created whereby we could walk in intimacy with the Father again. Only in Jesus was the veil torn allowing God's manifest presence into the earth. We owe all that we have to Jesus. We owe all that we have to Christmas. So across the next two days we'll celebrate the joyful reality of Christmas. May this time together help us center our celebrations around the goodness of Emmanuel, God with us. Our Scripture for today comes from John 6:51, and today's worship is Always Have by Vertical Worship First15 is a daily devotional written and recorded by Craig Denison. As we reach the end of our weeklong focus on forgiveness, today we're going to look at what it takes to forgive ourselves. For some of us, forgiving ourselves can be the hardest part of forgiveness. May God give us the grace to see ourselves as he does, and offer ourselves love, compassion, and forgiveness regardless of what we've done. The Shifting Perceptions Podcast - Inspiration For Creative Lifestyles
Leave Us A Review This week we sat down with professional climbing and bouldering champion Sierra Blair-Coyle, whose passion for the sport would inspire almost anyone to want to hit their local climbing wall. As a family who loves to climb together, when Sierra told us that she loved rock climbing from the moment she tried it, it completely resonated with us. The daughter of a gymnastics coach, Sierra tried gymnastics and karate herself, before she discovered climbing at the age of eight. Competing professionally ever since, Sierra achieved status as a professional climber at age 14. Perhaps one of the most remarkable things about Sierra is her dedication to the sport, and her hunger to be the best that she can be. A World Cup Competitor since 2010, Sierra has also claimed the title of National Champion twice as a junior competitor. Feeling truly blessed to be able to do what she loves, travel the world and earn a living from it, we chatted about her aspirations as an athlete, her plans for the future and what she hopes to accomplish. Keep reading for some of our favorite insights from one of the most kick-ass women we've had the pleasure of talking to. When You Know... You Know Sometimes you experience something for the first time, and it feels like it's feeding your soul. Sierra explained to us that she found her passion when she first tried out climbing because she thrived off the challenge it presented. Completely undeterred by the physicality and self-discipline it requires, climbing gave Sierra with an opportunity to prove to herself that she is capable of achieving whatever she sets her mind to. "I tried other sports when I was younger, like gymnastics and karate, and what happened is that when it would get hard, or I had to work harder or put more effort in, I would quit — because I was a kid and wanted it to be easy. But there was something about climbing, when it got hard I wanted to keep doing it. I was pretty much all in from the beginning." Follow Your Passion — and Always Have a Plan B Determined from a young age to be a professional climber, Sierra did all that she could to make her dream a reality. However, her pragmatic attitude toward hard work and discipline isn't only applicable to climbing. In 2016 she graduated with a degree in marketing from Arizona State University and explained to us that although climbing is her love and career, it doesn't hurt to have a backup plan. "I always wanted to be a professional climber once I started, but honestly, even if I were in any other sport, I would want to be professional at that. I knew I wanted to do something great. As far as going to university, it was definitely a backup plan, because in climbing you're not making crazy money, I make a living, but nothing to retire on at this point, so it's just good to have that." If It Feels Good, Do It Sierra's can-do attitude is infectious, and as the parents of a totally fearless daughter, we love how much of an energetic and motivating role model she is — for women of all ages. "When I was a kid I was pretty much down for anything, I was definitely a tomboy, but then I also had more Barbies than I could even count, so I don't think my parents were super surprised when I started climbing. I was just having fun at it. I really enjoy doing something where I can push myself and achieve things, and I don't know what it was about it, but something about it just felt right to me." In this episode David and John discuss Jesus’ somewhat controversial statement that “The Poor you will Always Have with you, but you will not always have me.” (John 12:8; Matthew 26:11; Mark 14:7. This passage or this saying of Jesus has often been used to justify the non-involvement of the church with social justice or poverty alleviation or to make proclamation or preaching the priority of the church, effectively this is often at the expense of caring for the poor or working for a more just community. David and John examine the Old Testament background to this passage? Question our exegesis which often comes from a point of privilege? Discuss what Jesus and the early church understand by this statement, in particular the apparent priority given by Jesus to preaching over justice. How did the early church understand this passage? What does it mean for us today as we grapple with the relationship between evangelism and social action? EVERYTHING in the World is Whatever Your ATTITUDE Towards It Is I posted a video of @keeganmic speaking to the @pennstatefball team. I thought it was extremely POWERFUL stuff The beginning of what he said is above in the caption, followed by the quote on the photo, amongst other things. Think about it and really buy into it today, and everyday: Rather than I can’t or I won’t, ALWAYS Have a Consciousness That Says I WILL If you’re not doing it now (whatever “it” is for you), Don’t get discouraged. BELIEVE that you just haven’t done it YET You may not be there yet, quite frankly none of us are‼️ The day you “arrived” or think you’ve “made it” is the day you start letting others catch up, and surpass where you are. Don’t be satisfied. Have that mindset that you’re not there YET, but YOU WILL BE. In our last podcast in our weeklong focus on forgiveness, today we're going to look at what it takes to forgive ourselves. For some of us, forgiving ourselves can be the hardest part of forgiveness. May God give us the grace to see ourselves as he does, and offer ourselves love, compassion, and forgiveness regardless of what we've done. Our Scripture for today comes from Proverbs 28:13, and today's worship is Always Have by Vertical Church Band feat. Jon Guerra. First15 is a daily devotional written and recorded by Craig Denison. Ep. 10 - I Don't Always Have my $hit Together - As a mental health advocate, medical student, and podcaster, I think often times I project an image that I always have my bipolar disorder perfectly managed. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. I've been able to successfully manage my illness, and achieve things I didn't think were possible. Yet, I certainly still have symptoms of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and even mania. I want to make more of an effort to show my imperfections as a means of making listeners feel better about theirs. Management of mental health is not about achieving perfection, rather being able to live in the moment, and do your best to balance this crazy experience we call life.
As we wrap up this week of simple Christianity, today we look at grace. Many of us are so hard on ourselves and struggle to allow ourselves to taste the grace the Father has for us. We look to earn love and acceptance in this world, but God's way of grace couldn't be more different from the world who tells us we are what we do. May today be a breath of fresh air as you encounter the grace of God that requires nothing in return. Our Scripture for today comes from 1 Corinthians 15:10, and today's worship is Always Have by Vertical Worship featuring Jon Guerra. Rule one of vacationing with kids: don’t vacation with kids. Oh, your tickets are already purchased? Then you’d better stock up on Ziploc bags. (Take it from a mother who’s needed a few.) We asked our listeners on our Facebook page for their packing essentials and got dozens of responses. In this episode we dig through them all– and also discuss what might be better off left behind. Here’s links to a few resources we discuss in the episode: SeatGuru, for checking your in-flight entertainment options before you get to the airport (although Rule Two of Vacationing with Kids is: Always Have a Backup). WorkFlowy, for easy packing-list-making. Do it once, keep it forever. Amazon Video and Netflix apps, both of which offer downloadable content (h/t to The Mom Hour: don’t start downloading fifteen minutes before you leave for the airport!) Don’t head off for your summer vacation until you listen! Did we forget anything? Let us know in the comments!
