To mark the return of the Fantasy/Animation archive instalments, Chris and Alex once more delve into the podcast's back catalogue for this relisten of Episode 70 and their discussion of Space Jam (Joe Pytka, 1996), which featured very special guest Professor Paul Wells, Director of the Animation Academy at Loughborough University. Listen again at their analysis of Space Jam as emblematic of animation's longstanding relationship with sport; the nostalgic callbacks that the film makes to Golden Age Hollywood stardom; sport, drama, metaphor, and society; Space Jam's soundtrack and negotiation of black celebrity identities; and how Joe Pytka's film provides the spectacle of stylistic hybridity through the lens of NBA basketball. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

This week, the Disneyland 70th has officially arrived, we talk about all the new things, a missing feature of Adventureland has returned, an alien has been a menace at Disneyland, changes to the Animation Academy, we talk about our upcoming trip to the parks and other destinations this time, and more! Please support the show if you can by going to https://www.dlweekly.net/support/. Check out all of our current partners and exclusive discounts at https://www.dlweekly.net/promos. News: The Disneyland 70th finally kicked off on Friday. While the lines for merchandise, 70th experiences, and food were longer than usual, the lines for attractions were very off-season feeling. Rise of the Resistance had a 35 minute standby wait at 4pm, and Space Mountain had a 40 minute wait. – https://www.micechat.com/415359-disneyland-update-celebrate-70-and-build-a-better-tomorrowland/ The 70th castle sculpture in the esplanade revealed an interesting twist this week – it is a music box! At least that is what is sounds like. Different, music box versions of Disney songs play throughout the day for passing guests. – https://www.micechat.com/415359-disneyland-update-celebrate-70-and-build-a-better-tomorrowland/ The new Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live show has debuted in the Disney Theatre in Disney California Adventure. The new show is a big upgrade from the last show in the theatre, and is still geared towards younger kids, with seating on the floor only. The show features characters, bubbles, snow, disco lighting, and more. Unlike the previous show, Mickey and Minnie are present throughout the show. – https://www.micechat.com/415359-disneyland-update-celebrate-70-and-build-a-better-tomorrowland/ After over two years, a part of Adventureland has returned in a different form. The Adventureland restrooms across from the entrance to the land have finally lost the not very temporary wall. The wall was put up over two years ago to cover the damage from a burst water pipe. The new wall features some plants, a highly-themed water fountain, and a dividing wall that matches the nearby building. – https://www.micechat.com/415359-disneyland-update-celebrate-70-and-build-a-better-tomorrowland/ The new live action Lilo & Stitch movie is coming to theaters on May 23rd, and Stitch has stopped by Disneyland to celebrate. Stitch came and had a busy day at the parks, but left behind evidence he was there. A Stitch-themed window has been taken over outside the Emporium. – https://disneyparksblog.com/dlr/stitch-crash-lands-at-disneyland-for-70th-celebration/ Fans of the Animation Academy unite! New clips that play in the large screens around the main lobby area have been added and include “Coco,” “Princess and the Frog,” “Moana,” “Soul,” “Zootopia,” and “Encanto.” Some clips from “Lady and the Tramp,” “Pinocchio,” and “Frozen” were removed to make room. – https://www.micechat.com/415359-disneyland-update-celebrate-70-and-build-a-better-tomorrowland/ SnackChat: Magic Key Terrace – https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/disney-california-adventure/magic-key-terrace/menus/ Wine Country Trattoria – https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/disney-california-adventure/wine-country-trattoria/menus/ Sonoma Terrace – https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/disney-california-adventure/sonoma-terrace/menus/ Discussion Topic: Tage and Teresa's Trip to Disneyland and the Disneyana Event

Take a leisurely stroll through all of Disney's California Adventure. It quickly became clear that I wasn't going to get the recording I set out to caoture, as this particular day seemed challenging to get the sounds I often seek, but it remains a great snapshot in time. This is truly an episode where headphones will greatly enhance your experience. It's a pleasant late Spring evening in a bustling California Adventure, the sun is casting evening shadows but there's still ample light for a couple of hours. Entering the turnstiles we are welcomed by well-acclimated guests who have been around for much of the day already. The chatter is more exuberant than early morning hours, muffling the familiar tunes of the area loop. As we venture further down Buena Vista Street and steer toward Hollywood Land, the unmistakable voices of beloved Pixar characters weave into the ambiance – it's Pixar Fest, after all!Over in Hollywood Land, Club Pixar has taken festive control of the back area. We check out the Pixar shorts playing in the former entrance to Hollywood and Dine, but dodge the loud music in the backlot and head back to the Animation Building for some relaxation.Understandably so, the fan-favorite spot was busy with Animation Academy and Turtle Talk getting out at the same time, so we scurry through the always enjoyable Off the Page and then head toward Avenger's Campus. After a leisurely stroll through the land, we emerge onto the Parade Corridor. A quick detour takes us to the cascading wonder of Grizzly Peak's back waterfall to only stand off to the side to take in the Pixar Pier Parade Corridor mix before heading through Cars Land. There we take in the normal ambiance including a cycle of Luigi's.We then make our way through San Fransokyo Square to catch a little J-pop and then make our way through Pixar Pier. Strangely, there were a few areas where music is normally playing that were just simply off.Later, we catch a portion of the Pixar Fest parade, Better Together. A few moments of lively jubilation from the parade, it was time to relax through the best means I know… Redwood Creek Challenge Trail area music. While the play area was under refurbishment, the speakers still provide the somber, softer melodies that can bring anyone to a peaceful state. We then pick ourselves up and pass by Grizzly River Run and jaunt through Grizzly Peak Airfield before exiting the park for the evening. I hope you enjoy your evening tour.Audio recorded on Friday 5/24/2024 around 5:15PM. --------------------Donate to the Show:Help keep Park Sensory going with a one-time donation. SDCC 2023: Jamie Lee Curtis, Russell Goldman, and Karl Stevens on Mother Nature

Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

The path Mother Nature took to its sequential form is beautifully compelling. When Jamie Lee Curtis was nineteen, an angry story of global catastrophe and corporate greed took root. Time would pass, and along with her co-writer Russell Goldman, she would mold it into a potential movie. Her eventual friendship with New Yorker cartoonist (and former CBCC guest) Karl Stevens would ultimately yield the new graphic novel from Titan Comics. Curtis never imagined herself as a comic creator, but here she is, and she couldn't have been more thrilled to attend the San Diego Comic-Con International as one. We spoke with all three Mother Nature collaborators on the convention's second day. They were eager to share the book with us, making sure we had a physical copy in our hands, not satisfied with our PDF preview experience. It's one thing to see a comic on a screen; it's another to hold within your mitts. Mother Nature is a violently urgent comic. It's a supernatural revenge story in which a young woman goes on the attack against the oil organization that casually killed her father. Stevens illustrates numerous bits of bloody gore, and we chat with the creators about why this story had to be as gnarly as it is.  The world is on fire, and she's furious. Don't believe the corporate narrative, maternity is defensive, and when it needs to be, it's vicious. While we devour the ground beneath our feet, the ground retaliates, and Earth's vengeance is as brutal as anything you've seen in a horror movie. Also, in this episode, we discuss our time inside the San Diego Comic-Con Museum, reviewing the current Animation Academy and Stan Lee exhibits. We extensively discuss our time outside the convention, visiting the best comic book shops in San Diego. Mother Nature arrives in comic shops on August 8th. You can find your nearest store HERE. You can find Karl Stevens on Twitter HERE and on Instagram HERE. Jamie Lee Curtis is on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. You can find Russell Goldman on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Episode 124 - You're In Charge at WDW! You're In Charge at WDW! Hey everyone, I'm Mike, she's Sophie, that's Brenda, and and he's Grogu, and we're On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 124 for May 30, 2022, and today our feature topic is a fun one! You're In Charge at WDW -- 3 Changes You'll Make! We have been given the keys to the Kingdom, so to speak, and we're each giving three things that we would change. Grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and relax, and tell us in the comments below what you think! Here's the rundown of what we talked about: Cheddar from the Big CheeseSophie: The Tumbling Monkeys are returning to Festival of the Lion King! They will be returning on July 16th, so unfortunately after our trip, but we are very excited for all of you that are able to enjoy seeing them in person!Brenda: Are you looking to plan your trip to Walt Disney World for 2023? Well, Mike and I are pleased to let you know that pricing for 2023 vacations will open up on June 8th! We'd love to help you with your trip. We have a quote request form here on the website, you can select either of us to submit your quote request to, or you can email me at brenda@pixievacations.com or Mike at mike@pixievacations.com and we'll start the conversation that way. Thanks!Mike: Our record date for the podcast this week is on May 25th. That is my sister's wedding anniversary, so happy anniversary to Robin and Jim! Unfortunately, though, that wonderful celebration of their love for each other is tempered by what happened in Uvalde, Texas, yesterday. In the aftermath of such senseless, tragic loss, there is a lot of sadness, a lot of anger, a lot of calls for change to prevent something like this from happening again. We're not going to get into the details here because we don't know how many young ones listen to the show and you can learn all you need to know about it from other avenues. We don't have the answers here, nor do we pretend to have them, but you should know this. Brenda, Sophie, and I, and millions of other people are doing the only thing we can do in the face of unspeakable evil – we are praying. Praying for God to comfort those families; praying for God to provide His Strength to all of us; praying for God to send His Peace upon us all; and praying for God to bring His swift justice upon those that would harm. At the end of the day, prayer is our most important tool, and we utilize it day in and day out. Now, we are led to carry on in the best way we can, and that means trying to bring you an entertaining show to provide some comic relief from a chaotic world, so let's do just that!Connect with us! I'm a 2D animator working with hand-drawn and digital cut-out techniques for TV, film and all the bits in between. In early 2017 I launched Toon Boom Trainer, an online training business focused on industry skills gaps. In 2020 this business became Adam's Animation Academy as part of my goal to serve a wider animation audience and improve the learning experience.I've lived in Manchester since 2013, working at CHF Entertainment and Brown Bag Films. My most recent production is a preschool show with Irish company, Mooshku. since launching Toon Boom Trainer, I've worked with universities such as Edge Hill and Manchester School of Art, as well as in-house for studios like King Bee and Aardman Animations. I work directly with Toon Boom on their projects such as the recent Career Camps in Dublin and London, as well as a rigger for hire on their high profile production assignments. In 2012 I worked on a children's TV series in Dublin, Ireland for Geronimo Productions. I used Adobe Flash (now Adobe Animate) to create high-quality character animation whilst keeping to that ever important weekly output (a minimum of 1 minute completed animation per week). With my animation career, I've also completed work for Baby Cow Productions, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Kavaleer, Aon (Manchester United F.C), Chevrolet, Colonel Blimp, Jimmy Carr, BBC, HIT Entertainment and more. Please read my CV for the full details! In 2011 I worked at RMIT Melbourne as their 'animator in residence' and on a hand-drawn feature production (Titeuf Le Film) in 2010 in Dundee, Scotland. I've also lectured at universities in the UK and Australia.Website: https://www.adamoliver.comCV: https://www.adamoliver.com/c-vAcademy: https://www.adamsanimationacademy.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamoliveranimationTwitter: https://twitter.com/UKanimatorFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/adamoliverillustrationInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/adamtheanimatorYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZL6yAsdQ19TAAfSJZkF1gg

News: With the blueprint for a safer economy measures being stopped by the State of California, Disneyland is free to loosen some restrictions. As of Tuesday, June 15th, masks and social distancing are no longer required in the theme parks. Distancing markers have begun to be removed from the resort and indoor queues are now open for guests to wait inside, instead of outside like was previously required. – https://disneyland.disney.go.com/travel-information/ With the addition of more guests from out of state, more dining locations are reopening. As we reported on last week, Oga's Cantina, Docking Bay 7, Alien Pizza Planet, Rancho del Zocalo, Wine Country Trattoria, and Bayside brews are all returning. In addition to these, some quick service and outdoor vending locations are returning. Maurice's Treats, Jack Jack Cookie Num Nums, Fantasyland Food Cart, and Edelweiss Snacks on June 24th. July 1st, Hungry Bear, Lucky Fortune Cookery, Corn Dog Castle, Harbor Galley, Schmoozies, and Morimer's Market will be open. July 2nd, the Tangoroa Terrace and Trader Sam's reopen at the Disneyland Hotel. Finally, on July 8th, the Refreshment Corner and Clarabelle's Hand Scooped Ice Cream return. – https://www.micechat.com/294078-disneyland-update-the-rush-to-fully-reopen/ Some of the live entertainment has been spotted rehearsing for their return this Friday, June 18. The Disneyland Band has been practicing after park hours, according to Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock's Instagram account. No word on other acts, but it seems like only a matter of time at this point. – https://www.micechat.com/294078-disneyland-update-the-rush-to-fully-reopen/ Starting July 4th, Disneyland will resume nightly fireworks! Mickey's Mix Magic will run nightly through the summer for all to enjoy. Over at Walt Disney World, Happily Ever After will resume on July 1st at Magic Kingdom, and EPCOT Forever will return to Epcot, also on July 1st. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/06/fireworks-spectaculars-are-back-at-disney-parks-this-summer/ Four small attractions also reopened on June 15th. The Sleeping Beauty Castle Walk-through, the Animation Academy, the Golden Zephyr, and Sorcerer's Workshop have all returned to guests. These attractions were able to return with the social distancing mandate expiring for California, allowing the tighter spaces and indoor areas to accommodate enough guests, allowing them to open. – https://www.micechat.com/294078-disneyland-update-the-rush-to-fully-reopen/ Some changes have come to Avengers Campus since it opened at the resort just over a week ago. Showtimes for the Avengers character encounters have been added to the Disneyland mobile app, in order to allow guests to plan ahead and not wait in the land for hours waiting for the encounters to happen. – https://www.micechat.com/294016-simple-avengers-campus-fixes-on-the-way-showtimes-publish-today/ Some dining changes have come to Avengers Campus. Shawarma Palace has been removed from mobile order all together, more standby capacity was added to Pym Test Kitchen, and mobile orders can only be made inside the land. Previously, some guests could mobile order outside of the area, and then use the order to gain access, but this is no longer allowed. Having guests place orders while already in the area also allows for the mobile order windows to last a lot longer and not be completely full in the morning for the entire day. – https://www.micechat.com/294078-disneyland-update-the-rush-to-fully-reopen/ The Disney Food Blog tested out the WEB Slinger Power Band to see if it was worth the price if you wanted to use it on the attraction. Basically, having a power band will give your web slinging a power up and gain more points, but it doesn't really affect the enjoyment of the attraction, unless you want to get the high score. Guests wanting to be the top of the leader board will need to have one of these to score the highest points possible. Unless topping the leader board is worth $60 to you, then these aren't a must have item. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/06/11/does-60-really-make-a-difference-on-web-slingers-at-disneys-avengers-campus/ Starting on June 18th, the Toy Story Parking lot will be open for guests again. Busses will be running between the resort transportation plaza and the parking lot, which hopefully means that the Mickey and Friends tram will also be making a comeback soon! – https://www.micechat.com/294078-disneyland-update-the-rush-to-fully-reopen/ Some photo ops have come to Downtown Disney this week. One of the ops is from the Hulu original Love, Victor, the other is based on Spider-Man! – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/06/13/whats-new-at-disneyland-resort-avengers-campus-opening-and-a-new-color-trend/ Of course with summer on the way, there is a summer treat that has returned to the resort. The Watermelon Seasonal Apple has arrived at Trolley Treats in Disney California Adventure for $11.99. This variation on the classic features a Granny Smith apple with caramel, white chocolate and watermelon flavored coating, and marshmallow ears. There is a strong watermelon flavor, so if you are a fan of that, this is for you. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/06/10/review-a-disneyland-caramel-apple-has-a-fun-flavor-combo/ Beginning in January, 2022, students can enroll in a new set of workshops presented by Disney. Disney Imagination Campus will be a collection of workshops across a range of performing arts and academic subjects tiered to different grade levels. These workshops are geared to helping students learn how to apply their imaginations to solve a lifetime of challenges – in wildly creative ways. Chris and Alex take to the basketball court for a sports-themed instalment of the podcast by looking at Space Jam (Joe Pytka, 1996), the part-animated, part-Michael Jordan sports comedy that has lots to say about the spectacle of stylistic hybridity, animation’s longstanding relationship to sport, and nostalgia via its many callbacks to Golden Age Hollywood cartooning all through the lens of NBA basketball. Joining them for Episode 70 is Professor Paul Wells, who is Director of the Animation Academy at Loughborough University, as well as being an internationally established scholar, screenwriter and director, working across and within both academia and industry contexts. Paul’s work has been central to the study, practice and research of animation as a field, and he has also written and directed numerous projects for theatre, radio, television and film. Listen as they discuss Space Jam as a laboratory for thinking about sport as a social metaphor for how societies should run; animation’s status as controlled drama (versus the unscripted nature of sport); notions of the professional versus the amateur in relation to sport’s rules, codes and conventions; the cultural practice of stars Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny, and their ability to act as ciphers for the contemporary moment; how the medium provides a version of ‘perfect motion’ through its excessive lyricism; the politics of race and what Space Jam tells us about black identities and whiteness through its black musical vernacular; and how Joe Pytka’s film reveals how animation can manage the very metaphors of sport.

It's been over 100 years since the first cartoons were drawn by hand. Since then, the form has delved into everything from sex and drugs to racial inequality and war crimes. Even the tamest, G-rated cartoons have often found ways of slipping in adult humor past the eyes of younger viewers. Cartoons have been the vehicle for government propaganda, social change, and political satire. Some have been boycotted and even banned for their content while others have been deemed masterpieces and praised by critics for their bold message and style. Today, cartoons continue to find ways of subverting the status quo in surprising (sometimes shocking) new ways. This hour, we speak with animators, animation experts, and historians about what makes cartoons so well suited for the exploration of, well, everything. Last year, 2017 marked the first Epcot Festival of Arts; a weekend event designed to showcase Disney culinary, performance and visual arts. The Figment topiary greeting guests and the art work all around World Showcase was a great touch, and the blending of Epcot history gave a contemporary feel to the festival.   To say the event was a success is an understatement. The second annual Epcot International Festival of the Arts in 2018 expanded to 7 days a week and stretched from January 12-February 19th – A perfect fit between Holidays Around the World and the always popular Flower and Garden Festival. Featuring world-class cuisine, remarkable visual art and an extraordinary lineup of live entertainment, the Festival of Arts allowed guests to experience art in action all around World Showcase. Festival of Arts is everything you love about the arts all rolled up into one salute! Feast on artistic dishes with a delicious Disney twist at specially-created food studios. Witness the incredible talent behind Disney magic—from curated exhibits to seminars and hands-on workshops. Take in a smash-hit smorgasbord of musical performances—from local bands to Broadway stars. From seminars and workshops like the Animation Academy hosted in the Odyssey Festival Showplace or Disney Broadway Performances at the American Gardens Theater, community art showcases, a hands-on wall mural at the Expression Section and food studios all around World Showcase, Festival of Arts has something for everyone. While I walked around World Showcase taking pictures for The Disney Nerds Podcast, the timing was perfect to catch one of the live performances at the Epcot Fountain View Stage.
