I have a massive amount of respect for anybody who makes a scripted podcast. The planning, the creative effort, and the execution can be brutal. There are a lot of them that I like, but Christian Duguay's brilliant Valley Heat is one that I love. I'm biased, as I'm a voice on it, but I was a fan way before that happened. Valley Heat is one of those podcasts that, once you listen to an episode, you're hooked. The story of Doug, who broadcasts his podcast from his garage in Burbank and talks only about his life, is gut-busting in its simplicity. Christian and I have been friends a long time, and it was fun to talk about his podcast, catch up on each other's lives, and offer what might be horrible advice to strangers. THE CALLS: 1) Lars has a parent who is convinced they were abducted by aliens. How to deal? 2) Lauren from Baltimore hates her job, and you just HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE REST IT'S AMAZING. 3) Caller asks, “How do you motivate yourself to do anything when you just want to do nothing?” THAT IS THE QUESTION! Thanks, MIghtys. Tell your friends! Call Matt and ask a question 323-763-0228 New episodes arrive every Thursday via The Laugh Button. This week Christian Duguay enters the ring with a lot of bar sings, will their glow distract Chris & Dave?
Philip K. Dick returns to the show with what might be his strongest story yet with “Second Variety,” but how does the adaptation by Christian Duguay stack up? In episode 151, Luke & James smoke some anti-radiation cigs and set off into the wastes to hunt some deadly machines. Topics: Peter Weller AKA Robocop himself as Hendrickson, a swiss-army knife character, cold war era anxieties, secret Terminator inspiration, PKD’s signature woman-character revisited, a remarkably unsexy onscreen kiss, teaching machines how to… you know, and a final vote deciding which was better: the short story or the movie!
