The statement said the countries do not agree Russian and Belarusian athletes should be allowed back into competition as long as the lack of clarity and concrete details on a workable neutrality model aren’t addressed. The United States, Britain, France, Canada and Germany were among those signing. Those five countries brought nearly one-fifth of all the athletes to the Tokyo Games in 2021. NHL – National Hockey League Tonight Detroit Red Wings at Washington Capitals, 7:00 p.m. Vegas Golden Knights at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30 p.m. Olympics – Nations: No clarity on neutrality, no Olympics for Russia The governments of 35 nations signed a statement calling on the IOC to clarify the definition of “neutrality” as it seeks a way to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes back into international sports and next year’s Paris Olympics. The statement said the countries do not agree Russian and Belarusian athletes should be allowed back into competition as long as the lack of clarity and concrete details on a workable neutrality model aren’t addressed. The United States, Britain, France, Canada and Germany were among those signing. Those five countries brought nearly one-fifth of all the athletes to the Tokyo Games in 2021. The letter was the product of a Feb. 10 summit in London. MLB – Cubs, RHP Michael Fulmer finalize $4M, 1-year contract The Chicago Cubs have added Michael Fulmer to their bullpen, finalizing a $4 million, one-year contract with the right-hander. Fulmer played for Detroit and Minnesota last season, going 5-6 with 3.39 ERA in a career-high 67 appearances. He began the season with the Tigers and was traded to the Twins in August. Fulmer says conversations with former Cubs relievers Andrew Chafin and Daniel Norris cemented his decision to join the team. MLB – Elvis Andrus to play 2nd base with Chicago White Sox Elvis Andrus is joining the Chicago White Sox, stepping into the team’s opening at second base. Andrus has finalized a $3 million, one-year contract. The two-time All-Star has played shortstop for his entire big league career, but he is going to move over to second in his return to Chicago. To make room on the roster, left-hander Bennett Sousa was designated for assignment. The 34-year-old Andrus finished last season with Chicago, hitting .271 with nine homers and 28 RBIs in 43 games after he was cut by Oakland. MLB – Milestones behind him, Cabrera hopes for fun final year Miguel Cabrera sounds at ease with his decision to call it a career. The Detroit slugger joked with reporters in his usual playful way and insisted he doesn’t need opponents to lavish him with attention. That will likely come this season whether he wants it or not. Two decades after his big league debut as a 20-year-old Florida Marlin, Cabrera is entering his final season. He’s hoping for good health and more wins for the Tigers. Cabrera hit his 500th home run two years ago. Last season he reached 3,000 hits. MLB – Major league teams searching for advantages with new rules The only certainty about Major League Baseball’s new rules for the 2023 season is that everyone is going to push and pull on them in search of an edge. The size of the bases has been increased to 18-inch squares from 15. The new pitch clock is 15 seconds with no runners on base and 20 seconds with runners. The increasingly frequent infield shift has been eliminated, and there is a limit of two of what MLB calls disengagements — pickoff attempts or steps off the rubber — per plate appearance. NHL – National Hockey League Tonight Detroit Red Wings at Washington Capitals, 7:00 p.m. Vegas Golden Knights at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30 p.m. Olympics – Nations: No clarity on neutrality, no Olympics for Russia The governments of 35 nations signed a statement calling on the IOC to clarify the definition of “neutrality” as it seeks a way to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes back into international sports and next year’s Paris Olympics. The statement said the countries do not agree Russian and Belarusian athletes should be allowed back into competition as long as the lack of clarity and concrete details on a workable neutrality model aren’t addressed. The United States, Britain, France, Canada and Germany were among those signing. Those five countries brought nearly one-fifth of all the athletes to the Tokyo Games in 2021. The letter was the product of a Feb. 10 summit in London. MLB – Cubs, RHP Michael Fulmer finalize $4M, 1-year contract The Chicago Cubs have added Michael Fulmer to their bullpen, finalizing a $4 million, one-year contract with the right-hander. Fulmer played for Detroit and Minnesota last season, going 5-6 with 3.39 ERA in a career-high 67 appearances. He began the season with the Tigers and was traded to the Twins in August. Fulmer says conversations with former Cubs relievers Andrew Chafin and Daniel Norris cemented his decision to join the team. MLB – Elvis Andrus to play 2nd base with Chicago White Sox Elvis Andrus is joining the Chicago White Sox, stepping into the team’s opening at second base. Andrus has finalized a $3 million, one-year contract. The two-time All-Star has played shortstop for his entire big league career, but he is going to move over to second in his return to Chicago. To make room on the roster, left-hander Bennett Sousa was designated for assignment. The 34-year-old Andrus finished last season with Chicago, hitting .271 with nine homers and 28 RBIs in 43 games after he was cut by Oakland. MLB – Milestones behind him, Cabrera hopes for fun final year Miguel Cabrera sounds at ease with his decision to call it a career. The Detroit slugger joked with reporters in his usual playful way and insisted he doesn’t need opponents to lavish him with attention. That will likely come this season whether he wants it or not. Two decades after his big league debut as a 20-year-old Florida Marlin, Cabrera is entering his final season. He’s hoping for good health and more wins for the Tigers. Cabrera hit his 500th home run two years ago. Last season he reached 3,000 hits. MLB – Major league teams searching for advantages with new rules The only certainty about Major League Baseball’s new rules for the 2023 season is that everyone is going to push and pull on them in search of an edge. The size of the bases has been increased to 18-inch squares from 15. The new pitch clock is 15 seconds with no runners on base and 20 seconds with runners. The increasingly frequent infield shift has been eliminated, and there is a limit of two of what MLB calls disengagements — pickoff attempts or steps off the rubber — per plate appearance. WNBA – Russian court rejects Griner appeal of her 9-year sentence A Russian court has rejected an appeal by U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner of her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession, a step that could move her closer to a possible high-stakes prisoner swap between Moscow and Washington. The all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and two-time Olympic gold medalist was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport. Reflecting pressure on the U.S. administration to do more to bring Griner home, the U.S. secretary of state revealed in July that Washington had made a proposal to get Griner home, along with Paul Whelan, an American serving a 16-year sentence in Russia for espionage. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night New Jersey Devils 6, Detroit Red Wings 2 Chicago Blackhawks 4, Florida Panthers 2 Devils 6, Red Wings 2 – Bratt scores 2, Devils hand Wings first regulation loss, 6-2 Jesper Bratt had two goals and an assist as the New Jersey Devils beat the Detroit Red Wings 6-2. Jack Hughes, Dawson Mercer, Yegor Sharangovich and Nico Hischier also scored for the Devils. Vitek Vanecek stopped 20 shots to help the Devils bounce back from a 6-3 loss at home to Washington on Monday. Dominik Kubalik and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit and Alex Nedeljkovic made 35 saves. MLB – Tigers hire Rays’ Rob Metzler as VP, assistant GM The Detroit Tigers have hired Tampa Bay scouting director Rob Metzler as vice president and assistant general manager. Metzler spent 15 seasons with the Rays, working the past seven years as the team’s senior director of amateur scouting. He will lead the Tigers’ amateur and international scouting departments, working under president of baseball operations Scott Harris. Detroit finished 66-96 in 2022 and has not made the playoffs in eight years. Harris took over the front office after longtime general manager Al Avila was fired in August. NFL – NFL says referees didn’t get Mike Evans’ autograph The NFL says the two game officials seen interacting with Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans in the tunnel of Bank of America Stadium after the Buccaneers’ 21-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday didn’t ask for an autograph. The league released a statement saying the interaction “did not involve a request by the game officials for an autograph” and the officials were reminded of the “importance of avoiding even the appearance of impropriety” when interacting with players. NFL – Titans release renderings of proposed new domed stadium The Tennessee Titans’ proposed domed stadium would seat approximately 60,000 people and cover 1.7 million square feet under renderings released Tuesday. The renderings show the stadium with porches and outdoor terraces providing views of Nashville, a circular translucent roof and a variety of areas for fans. An architect has not yet been hired. The new stadium would cost $1.2 billion in public funding and is considered to be the largest public commitment for an NFL stadium to date. The release follows last week’s announcement of a deal for $760 million in local financing that still must be approved by the Nashville council and sports authority. Golf – LIV Golf team finale set for Doral, PGA Tour goes to Bermuda LIV Golf heads to Trump National Doral in Miami this weekend for the finale of the Saudi-funded series’ inaugural season. A dozen four-man teams will play for a $50 million purse, the biggest ever in golf, with each winning team member getting $4 million. Dustin Johnson and his “4 Aces” are the top seed. The PGA Tour heads to Bermuda for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Lucas Herbert of Australia is not returning to defend his title. The field features only one player from the top 50 in the world ranking. The European tour is in Portugal for the Portugal Masters. NCAAFB – Big Ten boasts some of nation’s top defenses in 2022 Just four Big Ten teams are ranked in the AP Top 25, but six of the top 12 defenses in college football reside in the conference. Illinois has the top-ranked defensive unit in the nation, followed by No. 2 Ohio State. Michigan is ranked fifth in defense. Iowa was propped up by its tough defense before running into the speeding Buckeyes last week. The Hawkeyes are still sixth best in the nation. Barkley has signed a 10-year extension with Warner Bros. Discovery Sports, which owns TNT. Barkley’s agreement coincides with contract renewals for host Ernie Johnson and analysts Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal. Barkley has been with TNT since retiring as a player in 2000. And before this season started, both encountered some major issues. The Warriors will get their championship rings Tuesday night when the 77th NBA season opens. NBA – Barkley, ‘Inside the NBA’ crew agree to contract extensions Charles Barkley will not be leaving TNT or the “Inside the NBA” crew for the foreseeable future. Barkley has signed a 10-year extension with Warner Bros. Discovery Sports, which owns TNT. Barkley’s agreement coincides with contract renewals for host Ernie Johnson and analysts Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal. Barkley has been with TNT since retiring as a player in 2000. He had floated the idea of doing commentary for LIV Golf this past summer. NCAAMBKB – North Carolina No. 1 in preseason AP Top 25 North Carolina is No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll. The national runner-up from last season returns four of five starters and received 47 of 62 first-place votes. Gonzaga is No. 2, followed by Houston and Kentucky. Kansas and Baylor, the last two national champions, are tied for fifth. Duke, led by new coach Jon Scheyer, is seventh with UCLA, Creighton and Arkansas rounding out the top 10. The Big 12 and SEC lead the way with five teams apiece in the Top 25. NCAAFB – Fallout from rare Alabama loss Alabama loses so infrequently it seems to shift the shape of the season when it happens. The Crimson Tide took an L on Saturday at Tennessee that pushed the Volunteers to No. 3 in the AP Top 25. The Vols received 15 first-place votes, the most they have gotten since 1999. After falling on a field goal as time expired, the Crimson Tide slipped three spots to No. 6. Alabama is the highest ranked team that has lost. Reality Check cautions against making any grand proclamations about the Alabama dynasty’s long-term health and is fine with the Tide’s short fall. NASCAR – Wallace ignored his own mantra in Larson conflict NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace has a mantra of “Peace, Love and Understanding” that he uses to push back against the negativity so often hurled his way. There was nothing peaceful about his skirmish with Kyle Larson at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Wallace appeared to deliberately crash the reigning NASCAR champion in a dangerous retaliatory move and then he tried to fight Larson. Now NASCAR gets to decide if Wallace was out of line. He could be looking at a suspension.
