Financial planning seemed to be the perfect way to help clients lead socially responsible lives while building financial stability. He launched Planning for Progress in 2016 part-time to build slowly (and remain an active part of movements for social and economic justice). After 4 years, his network and niche aligned. Ethan relaunched in 2022 as a full-time advisor and now serves 70 clients in a calendar year. This episode is fun—and brutally honest. We're stoked this week to have Ethan Miller of Howlin Rain as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Now, in America 2021, capping these strangest and sorest of times, the band returns with The Dharma Wheel, a six-track, 52-minute dive into a joyous fantasy realm of exaggerated present. We catch up with Ethan for a conversation about the evolving sound of Howlin Rain, creating the new album 'The Dharma Wheel', his decision to add keyboard wizard Adam MacDougall to the mix, how we can strive to not be like the insects, how he feels now that he's able to get back at it on the road, ways to be a little more gentle with ourselves, and a whole lot more!SONG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EPISODE: 'Don't Let The Tears' off the new album 'The Dharma Wheel'FREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20 For 10% off Electric Fish Lights PROMO CODE: NSR INTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CIRCLES AROUND THE SUNOUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA. One of my passions since the semi-return to normal instruction in hopefully the receding wake of COVID, is to retain successful aspects of virtual instruction and then to include them in-person instruction. I've heard a lot of students and instructors say, “I never want to be on another Zoom call again.” Well, that's not realistic. There were aspects of virtual instruction that facilitated learning. We need to keep those. In this episode, four powerful virtual tactics will be explored. Granted, each of these ideas is much older than the pandemic and had been utilized extensively in in-person instruction, but they were particularly well-suited to virtual instruction and they should absolutely be included now in face-to-face learning. Here are the four tactics:the use of a virtual interactive syllabuspopulating the virtual syllabus with highly interactive HyperDocsincorporating higher level thinking promptsutilizing landing pads where students can submit work and then collaborateTo help me explore these ideas, I conscripted Ethan Miller—a primary source. Ethan is an education major at Muskingum University. He's been in a class I taught in-person and one that I taught virtually. He's passionate about how much better in-person instruction is, but he's coming around to virtual learning's potential. He's the perfect guest for this episode and he's going to be a magnificent teacher.

In today's hour of non-stop talk, the media asks for "patience" as they figure out how to not discuss President Trump. It's a relationship they simply don't want to go away because they know it's too good for them. Despite it, The View is telling Trump supporters to "suck it up" with the current results of the election and not question anything where questions should be taken up on and McDonald's is getting into the 'anti-meat" market. Exciting.  Photo by: Ethan Miller / Staff See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Recorded over my 2019 birthday weekend, for this guest mix, I put together the kinds of tunes I love and love to hear at Cowboys events - hard charging techy house to kick out the old and smash in the new. Huge props to all the producers that made these phat jams and big thanks to the Space Cowboys for having me on the RIPECast. Ethan Miller the principle behind Howlin Rain is one of those dudes, who doesn’t just make great music, he makes a lot of it. Not only that, but aside from writing and composing the band’s music he also oversees virtually all facets of getting his music to you via his own imprint Silver Current Records. He is a fascinating individual, who is involved in several bands, and writes poetry in his down time. Our discussion leaves a lot to unpack and for good reason. (Part II) Is for those in the ______________ of ______ (Luke 8:16b; 2 Cor 4:4, 6; 2 Pet 1:19; Acts 26:18). (Part III) Reveals what ____ ____________ (Luke 8:17; 1 Cor 13:12). (Part IV) Needs to ____ ____________ (Luke 8:18a). Lesson 2: God will reveal the ______________ of our __________ (Luke 8:17; Ecc 12:14; 1 Cor 4:5; 1 Tim 5:24-25; Matt 18:15-17; Josh 7:17; 2 Sam 12:12; Num 32:23). Lesson 3: God reveals more to the ________________ and takes from the ____________________ (Luke 8:18, 19:24-26; Matt 13:12, 25:28-29; Mark 4:25). Lesson 4: There’s no ________________ __________ in our spiritual understanding (Luke 8:18; Rom 1:21-22). Family Worship Guide Memory Verses: Psalm 16:11 Day 1: Read Luke 8:16-18 and discuss: Why did Jesus start teaching in parables? Reflecting on the Parable of the Soils, summarize the spiritual truths that have been revealed to you? If spiritual truth is meant to be revealed, and not hidden, what practical effects should that have in our lives - at home, in the workplace, etc.? Day 2: Read Luke 8:16-18, Ps. 18:28, 119:105 and discuss: What is the purpose of the “lamp” of God’s Word? The religious leaders in Jesus’ day tried to extinguish his “light”; whose teaching, later in the New Testament, compelled leaders to try to extinguish their teaching, too? Cite specific examples. How should this reaction to spiritual truth prepare us as we are used to reveal the light of spiritual truth in our everyday lives? Day 3: Read Luke 8:16-18 and discuss: Instead of “how” what words could have been used in verse 18? What is the meaning and significance of the word “how”? Give some examples, especially for the sake of younger children in your group. What is the connection between (A) “how” one listens and (B) the result given in the phrase immediately following the word “for”? Pray for those who lead, feed, and care for the flock, and their families (Col. 4:3, 2 Thess. 3:1): Jim Donald (Elder) and John LaPierre Pray for these church members/families (1 Tim. 2:1, Eph. 6:18, Col. 1:9): Steve & Terri Moeller, Ethan Miller, Dick & Tricia Moss, Jake & Kelli Motzkus, Lori Newburn Pray for “kings” and those in authority (1 Tim. 2:2): Local – Woodland Police; State - State Senator John Braun; Nation – Senator Patty Murray Pray for the Gospel to Spread Among All Peoples (Matt. 9:37-38): Those we directly support: James & Christina Post (Wycliffe), An Unreached People Group: Kanuri, Beriberi (Muslim, Nigeria)

Luke 7:18-19 When Jesus Doesn’t Meet Our Expectations Lesson 1: John was struggling because Jesus didn’t meet His expectations as: (Part I) ________ (Luke 3:3-6; Matt 3:2; Luke 17:20-21). (Part II) __________ (Matt 3:12; Luke 3:7-10; John 3:17, 12:47 cf. John 5:22, 27). (Part III) ________________ (Luke 2:36-38, 24:16-21). (Part IV) __________________ (Luke 4:18 [quoting Isa 61:1]; Psa 46:7; Isa 42:7). Lesson 2: We can ________ the ________ ______________ as John when we feel like Jesus isn’t meeting our expectations (John 1:29; 1 John 3:5; Acts 16:25).   Family Worship Guide Memory Verses: 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 Day 1: Read Luke 7:18, Matthew 3:14-16, John 1:15, 29, 35 and discuss: Up to this point in the gospel of Luke, describe John’s interactions with Jesus. What affirmations of Jesus’ Messiah-ship did John witness? Who affirmed Jesus was the Messiah, to John? What then is the significance of John’s confusion about Jesus now? Day 2: Read John 3:17 and John 12:47 and discuss: What was the purpose of Jesus’ first coming? How does this correspond with the fact the Bible says that he is the judge? Explain why this is not a contradiction. Day 3: Read Luke 4:18, Psalm 46:7, and Isa. 42:7 and discuss: What part of Luke 4:18 was probably most prominent in John’s mind? Did Jesus fail as redeemer? Or was there a different redemption Jesus was focused on, than physical redemption? In what ways - if you were honest - has Jesus “failed” to live up to your expectations? What is the solution - how can we change our thinking about Jesus and understand how he really is our redeemer? Pray for those who lead, feed, and care for the flock, and their families (Col. 4:3, 2 Thess. 3:1): Pastor Doug (Elder) and Dave Zumstein (Deacon) Pray for these church members/families (1 Tim. 2:1, Eph. 6:18, Col. 1:9): John & Dyan McCamish, Mike & Cheryl Mercurio, Steve & Terri Moeller, Ethan Miller, Dick & Tricia Moss, Jake & Kelli Motzkus Pray for “kings” and those in authority (1 Tim. 2:2): Local – Woodland City Council; State State Rep. Come and join us on an excursion through the debut, self-titled release, Heron Oblivion by, you guessed it, Heron Oblivion. Composed of seasoned musicians Charlie Saufley, Meg Baird, and former Comets on Fire members Ethan Miller and Noel Von Harmonson, Heron Oblivion lies on the fringes of psychedelic rock… and we want to see what makes it tick! Bear with us for this full album analysis and let us know your feelings below. Also, stick around 'till [1:19:50] for an interesting conversation on the concept of mood music (sometimes derisively called "musak"). Is society guilty of isolating, partitioning, and oversimplifying moods in music, or rather of condemning the confidently one-dimensional? These questions -- and some scary predictions -- on this week's Crash Chords Podcast! Continue reading

So great to be back at Breakfast of Champions this year and playing in the morning which, to me, is just the perfect time for one of my favorite flavors of breaks - pretty, and really dirty. Huge thanks to Latvian artists "Under This" for more than half the tracks in this set. (IMO, no one does pretty/dirty better. Nice one, UT!) Massive thanks as well to the Space Cowboys (and Cowgirls) for throwing such a phat party (and for 15 years running)! Such a great way to start the year. Turn it up and rock out! Due to playa-related electrical difficulties, the original recording of this authentic Hoe Down set was lost. I have however made every effort to recreate the original: I left an hour late; rode 45 minutes through dark, treacherous and rebar-laden sand; got lost at a terrible fake hoe down; course corrected; rolled up bathed in sweat and panic stricken; dumped a container full of fresh playa dust on my gear, chugged three fingers of Jameson and pressed Play. Yeaaaaaah baby! That's how we do it. =) Huge thanks to the Space Cowboys and Cowgirls for the massive commitment of love, energy and hard work it takes to make shit happen out there and of course for the opportunity to play; it was a long-time dream of mine and of course did not disappoint. Extra big love to my Cowgirl compadre and BFF Tamo who always looks out for me. As you cultivate the mind-body benefits of Tai Chi, you will likely focus on solo training and interactive two-person practices like Pushing Hands. There's a third kind of Tai Chi training, though, that will make the link between the other two stronger, Tai Chi Equipment Training. Using stones, balls, disks, belts, and other objects you find in nature, you can develop important attributes of the Tai Chi body and mind. Renown teacher and multiple-time national Push Hands champion Don Ethan Miller explains how to go about using objects to enhance your training in this episode.

This week the Space Cowboys are pleased to welcome our good pal, Ethan Miller, to the program. For this, his RIPEcast debut, Ethan treats us to a live recording of his set from the Friends and Family Camp Out this summer. Press play. Enjoy! "Every DJ has their signature event - BOC, the Halloween Renegade, Sanctuary, etc.  - the one event they look forward to all year, plan for, practice for and get up for, no matter what. That event for me is the Friends and Family Summer Campout, an event I've been helping produce for over 16 years now. While every year has its surprises, breaking my ankle mud wrestling just hours before my set was at the extreme edge of that category. But, like the postman, neither rain, snow, sleet, hail, irate husbands or brutal dogs was going to come between me and the dirty pounding I had in mind for FnF's dancefloor that night. It's light on finesse and heavy on vicodin but this set Blew Shit Up and if it doesn't make you dance, you can have your money back.  Enjoy!" - EM A little more background on this week's spacial guest.... You want a hard pounding? I got your hard pounding right here! I've always loved playing feel-good, crowd-pleasing, happier tunes at BoC -- big gay haus and funky breaks. But this year, I wanted to try something different -- I wanted to play the inside room, the dark-dirty-sweat-dripping-from-the-ceiling room. So I brought a collection of the finest techno in modern day, to give our loyal cow-pokes something new to feel in their ear-holes. Unfortunately, cow-pokes don't appear to like techno -- most of my dancefloor had vanished about half way through. I mean -- this is a pretty great set. It's no Ethan Miller set, but it's well mixed. Feels good. High energy. Hands in the air. Very danceable. So give it a shot and try something new. I do not recommend pairing wine with this mix. Instead, I recommend a gym workout, participating in an arm wrestling competition, shredding old mail, and weaving in and out of the HOV lane at 90mph. Enjoy! -- Trav

Given that we're talking about Burning Man, the following might seem obvious, but I'll say it anyway. =) It has always been my belief that the hard work, the dirt, the sweat, the energy expended working with your friends to build a space in which to celebrate, is what makes it sacred, what imbues it with spirit, what sets it up to go absolutely mental. This phenomenon has never been so insanely evident as it was at DISTRIKT this year - the place went regularly bat shit crazy. In the best possible way. Knowing this, I was so, so, stoked to be playing, on the Saturday of the burn, right before my good friend, Kramer.  Having just tag teamed a blistering techno set with him a month ago, he and I had joked earlier in the week about whether we could play techno at DISTRIKT, it being a 'day time' party. Imagine my surprise then when, parked at the DISTRIKT bar (all day =) I'm hearing phat techno. So, that question answered, I knew I could bang it when I wanted to. All good, but in the week prior (while shopping for day time music ;) I'd struck a fat vein of super-well-produced, rollin, trippy house with a slight techno sensibility in the drumming that I was dying to play. Timid Boy. Bad Ass. So that's where I started, you can see where it lead. Have to say, this is one of my favorite sets in a long time. I had so much fun playing tunes surrounded by freaks. Literally. Freaks in the front, freaks in the back, freaks in the booth, freaks on the roof, freaks gettin down everywhere. What a view.  Massive, massive thanks to DISTRIKT for the hard work, love and dedication, and for having me.  Hope you enjoy the set. Turn it up! Track List 1.
