A Prophet's Journey through Midnight by Mickarl D. Thomas, Sr., DMin, MPAMickarl D. Thomas Sr. chronicles the challenges he's overcome in A Prophet's Journey through Midnight. As an asthmatic child, he lost two brothers before being born and was left to wonder why he was spared. While he grew up with loving parents and siblings, his father was illiterate. More challenges would loom-none worse than the death of his son, Mikey, at age seventeen. The words, "Mikey was killed," reverberate in his soul every day. When he received the news, he fell on his knees before throwing an exercise machine at the bedroom window. Then he tried to jump. His harrowing journey also involved a divorce, a battle with prostate cancer, and contending with the death of his parents. In this book, he shares the pain of going through so many ordeals and also looks back at the obstacles he overcame during forty-five years in pastoral ministry. Throughout, he shares his belief that no matter what takes place in life, God is in charge. As Psalm 22:8 declares, "For the kingdom is the Lord's, and He rules over the nations."Mickarl D. Thomas, Sr. is a native of Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit as well as Wayne St. University with a BA in sociology and speech. In life, we are often faced with numerous and various decisions that can shape our path and influence our future. Decision-making is one of the crucial parts of our lives.  Each choice we make determines our direction and the path of our journey.  Some circumstances may not involve significant choices,  but others  may require us to step out in faith, get our knees on the ground, and raise our hands in surrender to the almighty God who is always in control. Life is a choice.  The greatest mistake a man can ever make is choosing to live his life apart from God's guidance and grace. Therefore, we should possess a humble heart that acknowledges the wisdom of God in every circumstance whether  favorable  or unfavorable. Though some things in this world may cause us trouble and discouragement, still, we have peace that passes all understanding, knowing that we are never alone.  The eyes of our Lord are always on us. Thus, may we all find the courage to walk in faith and embrace the transformative power of God's guidance in every decision we make.   Pastor Wesley Thompson is a loving husband, father, educator, author, activist, chaplain, political candidate, pastor, and faithful man of God. He is a native of Florence, Alabama. He is the senior pastor and teacher at Bethel Colbert Missionary Baptist Church and previously served as a youth pastor and interim pastor in his eleven years of ministry. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of North Alabama and a master's of divinity degree from Mercer University. He is pursuing a doctor of ministry degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center. He has worked as a college admissions recruiter and adjunct professor. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., NAACP, the Academy of Preachers, and various community service organizations. He is married to Le'Tanndra Thompson, and they have three sons.   In this episode, we will revisit a conversation I had with Rev. Wesley Thompson over a year ago and learn how faith in God guided him through the complexities of decision-making amidst the darkest moment of his life. He underscores the significance of seeking divine direction, aligning decisions with personal aspirations, consulting trusted confidants, and how God can lead us towards paths of hope, healing, and purpose. Rev. Thompson's testimony serves as an inspiration to all who listen, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, faith can lead us to hope, healing, and unexpected blessings. Tune in to gain a wealth of wisdom on the impact of faith on decision-making during life's darkest moments.     “When making decisions, it's usually going to be uncomfortable when you're more than likely to not be guaranteed one way or the other and that's where the faith piece comes in.”   Topics Covered: (00:01:43) Ask God for direction (00:03:16) Where faith comes in (00:04:36) The doubts of starting a podcast (00:06:33) Introducing our special guest, Rev. Inspired by the Greensboro, NC sit-ins of February 1960, the Atlanta Student Movement, led by the young men and women of Morehouse, Atlanta University, Clark College,  Interdenominational Theological Center, Morris Brown College and Spelman College, brought sit-ins, kneel-ins and boycotts to Atlanta. This ushered in the transition between Atlanta's “old guard” civil rights leaders and the younger, more progressive student leaders. It was inspiring to learn how the students of the Atlanta University Center organized and executed their plans and affected change and how the movement influenced the presidential race between Kennedy and Nixon.   Want to support this podcast? How can we persevere in the face of setbacks? How can we take a chance to discover what lies beyond the obstacles we're facing?   Life is indeed unpredictable. We never know when adversity will strike. In a flash of an eye, the things you were enjoying at the moment can turn into a nightmare. Thus, we naturally get discouraged when confronted with troubles, adversities, or conditions that make our lives uncomfortable. Many things in this world could injure our hopeful hearts and render us defenseless.   However, we must realize that we can still find a glimmer of hope even amid our worst circumstances. There will always be something held in reserve for each of us. Consequently, we cannot see those great opportunities because we dwell too much on rejection, failure, and unfavorable circumstances. Recognize that there are certain things over which we have no control. We must learn to trust God and His judgments since He understands what we genuinely require and how much we can handle. Let us strive to live with no regrets of yesterday's opportunities, leaving no room for doubts and embracing God's plan. Therefore, when bombarded by negative thoughts and self-doubt, take a leap of faith and believe God can take good care of everything. As our guest speaker claimed, "God will never tell you to do something that will lead to your destruction."   Pastor Wesley Thompson is a loving husband, father, educator, author, activist, chaplain, political candidate, pastor, and faithful man of God. Be captivated as we discover how a young pastor handled his life's most challenging decisions to take care of his pregnant wife as she faced a tragic health crisis.   "God is never going to tell you to go somewhere in which it's going to lead to failure." – Pastor Wesley Thompson   Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Introduction + Episode Snippet (00:00:38) Introducing our special guest, Wesley Thompson (00:02:11) You can make something positive out of a negative situation. Tuesday on Political Rewind: It has been more than a year since many Americans were shaken into action by the police shootings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks and other Black Americans. In response, millions took to the streets to demand an end to systemic racism, police brutality and injustice in American society. Meanwhile, corporations, universities and other institutions began evaluating internal practices that perpetuate discrimination against people of color in hiring and promotion. But as the summer of 2021 begins, it is time to ask whether there has been real progress in achieving the promises made by big businesses and other institutions. Subha Barry, CEO of Seramount, joined us to discuss her organization's recent report tracking employee perception and corporate action on social justice issues. She said a new generation of white-collar workers are looking for a reflection of their values in their workplace. "Young people are doing something that the generation before them did not do, and they are voting with their feet," Barry said. "They walk out of companies and they go seek other organizations whose values are aligned with theirs." Kyle Stapleton is a co-founder and board member of The A Pledge, a commitment by Atlanta marketing and advertising agencies to match the makeup of their teams to the diversity of Atlanta by 2030. He said the leaders of corporate America, in Atlanta and elsewhere, have an obligation to address workplace inequity. "Frankly, any good leader worth their stripes should see a moment, meet the moment and and do the right thing to be a leader in the moment," Stapleton said. How has the country progressed in the search for equality and justice in the workplace? What role does moral leadership play in creating a more just society? Henry E. Felder’s study of financial patterns within Black Christian places of worship reported that donations made to Christian ministries were around $508 per year, per person, in 2009. Tyler Media Services estimated that Black churches received revenue of $17 billion in 2006 alone. One prosperity church, the Reverend Creflo Dollar’s World Changers, received $69 million in 2006. “The church has gotten caught up in materialism and greed, a lifestyle. Many ministers today want to live like celebrities and they want to be treated like celebrities. In other words, instead of the church standing with the community, the church has become self-serving. It has strayed away from its mission,” stated Dr. Love Henry Whelchel, professor of church history at The Interdenominational Theological Center. Although this study focused on black churches, race does not exempt you from the greed, manipulation and extortion that take place in many churches. An interview with Mark Ellingsen author of Sin Bravely: A Joyful Alternative to the Purpose-Driven Life. Ellingsen demonstrates that awareness of sin is shown to lead to freedom and joy, as the pressure is removed to do and be good all the time. The book's other primary aim is to flesh out an alternative approach to life to Rick Warren's and the dominant American Christian vision. This alternative, life of brave sinning, is rooted in the worldview of the Protestant Reformation (esp. of Martin Luther). When people sin bravely, believing everything done is done in sin, people can get out of the way and recognize that all the good done is done by God despite individual seedy motives. This awareness leads to freedom and joy, since the pressure is now removed to do and be good. In addition, total dependence on God entails a self-forgetfulness that leads to happiness. The bolder one acknowledge's their sin, in failing to take credit for the good done, the more focused on God the individual becomes. Correspondingly this self-forgetful lifestyle is a promising counter-cultural alternative to the cultural Narcissism which so dominates in many segments of contemporary American society. Ellingsen provides practical ways to sharpen these insights, to 'own' them. He aims to clarify why the lifestyle of brave sinning and total dependence on God lead to happiness, with an emphasis on current neurobiological research on happiness and brain function. Ellingsen, then, demonstrates both the how and why brave sinning leads to joy, while in so doing offers readers practical advice on living this way. Mark Ellingsen is Associate Professor of Church History at the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta.
