Welcome to The Literary Life Podcast and our second episode in our series on E. M. Forster's book Howards End. This week, Angelina and Thomas cover chapters 8-16, continuing their discussion of the book and the overarching concept of “Story” along the way. In talking about different plot points and characters, Angelina and Thomas make some comparisons between the two couples presented in these chapters and share some thoughts on the friendship between Margaret and Mrs. Wilcox. Angelina points out that Forster is doing some medieval things in this story, as we will see as we go on further. They also bring out more of the significance and symbolism of Howards End the place in the story. If you want to check out our previous episodes on two of E. M. Forster's short stories, you can find those here: Episode 17: “The Celestial Omnibus” Episode 99: “The Machine Stops” We hope you will join us for the sixth annual Literary Life Online Conference, “Dispelling the Myth of Modernity: A Recovery of the Medieval Imagination.” During the live or later series of webinars, we will seek to dis-spell the Myth of Modernity and gain eyes to see and ears to hear Reality as it truly is. Speakers include Jason Baxter, Jenn Rogers, and Kelly Cumbee, in addition to Angelina and Thomas. This March you can join Thomas and his brother James back for a webinar on King Alfred the Great. Livingstone, from The Greek Genius and Its Meaning to Us It is astonishing how little attention critics have paid to Story considered in itself. Granted the story, the style in which it should be told, the order in which it should be disposed, and (above all) the delineation of the characters, have been abundantly discussed. But the Story itself, the series of imagined events, is nearly always passed over in silence, or else treated exclusively as affording opportunities for the delineation of character. There are indeed three notable exceptions. Aristotle in the Poeticsconstructed a theory of Greek tragedy which puts Story in the centre and relegates character to a strictly subordinate place. C. S. Lewis, from On Stories A Selection from “Terminus” By Ralph Waldo Emerson It is time to be old, To take in sail:— The god of bounds, Who sets to seas a shore, Came to me in his fatal rounds, And said: “No more! No farther shoot Thy broad ambitious branches, and thy root. Fancy departs: no more invent; Contract thy firmament To compass of a tent. There's not enough for this and that, Make thy option which of two; Economize the failing river, Not the less revere the Giver, Leave the many and hold the few. Book List: Aspects of the Novel by E. In this episode, Matt and Sam go deep into the life and times of Whittaker Chambers, most famous for his role in the "trial of the century"—the trial of Alger Hiss for perjury after Chambers accused Hiss of being a Communist spy during his years working in the federal government, especially the State Department. The two figures, once friends, came to symbolize a clash that was bigger than themselves, and prefigured the turn American politics would take at the onset of the Cold War. Chambers would become a hero of the nascent postwar conservative movement, with his status as an ex-Communist—one of many who would congregate around National Review in the mid-to-late 1950s—bringing his moral credibility to the right as one who had seen the other side and lived to tell his tale. Before all that, though, Chambers's life was like something out of a novel: a difficult family life, early brilliance at Columbia University, literary achievement in leftwing publications, and years "underground" engaging in espionage for the Soviet Union against the United States. "Out of my weakness and folly (but also out of my strength), I committed the characteristic crimes of my century," writes Chambers in his 1952 memoir/jeremiad Witness. Your hosts break it all down, assess his crimes and contributions, and explore one of the most consequential American lives of the twentieth century. Week 2 of O Church Arise: Modern Lessons from the Story of the Early Christian Church. This week we'll be looking at Acts 2:40-47, the implications of Pentecost. Dr. Luke, the author of the Book of Acts, gives us an amazing portrait of the Early Christian Church. It doesn't look exactly like the American Church today. Should it? What fueled it to be so different? This week we'll worship under the theme of “Pentecost and Its Meaning.”

The Resurrection. The Story and Its Meaning. Dr. Dan Doriani Matthew 28:1–10, 16–20 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he[a] lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” 16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[b] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Scripture quotations are from the Holy Bible, English Standard Version, © 2001 Crossway Bibles, a division of Good News Publishers. Wedding Planning can be a stressful, unenjoyable, expectation-crushing, soul sucking experience that drives you to the absolute brink of relationship death! But it doesn't have to be this way. In this episode, we debunk the stress-myth and share our vast experience about how to keep your eye on the prize and your feet on the ground as you plan your wedding. Stay alert and stay alive, y'all. Shit just got real! Big Takeaways - Hey, maybe now is a good time to pick up yoga or meditation! Commit, Connect, Communicate. Remember that the wedding planning process is a journey - the wedding is not the end goal. It's the marriage that you are beginning! Don't let the planning consume your life. Really try hard not to obsess over the details. Pick your battles! It's cliche, but in wedding planning, it's life. Figure out how to share the workload (see the link below) so that you are both involved and invested. The wedding day does not belong to one partner - it is a ritualistic day that you experience as a couple. A day to celebrate your relationship and get you started off on the right foot for your life together. Once again, we go over how you have to figure out your budget first. It's a trickle down effect for all wedding planning. If you're vague about it, it's going to be a bigger issue down the road. We probably say the word BREATHE about 50 times in this episode (Ok, maybe like a dozen). Can you tell that we deal with this a lot? We are big proponents of ‘wedding planning breaks'. “We were taking A BREAK!” (Friends. Anyone? Anyone?) Links we referenced - Is It Our Day Or The Bride's Day? The Division Of Wedding Labor And It's Meaning For Couples An article we reference which is spot on and we highly recommend it. Surprisingly Awesome is a podcast that Michelle LOVES. Especially the two episodes about wedding planning. https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/surprisingly-awesome/id1053898371?mt=2 Quotes “A wedding is a representation of ourselves - of our identity as a couple. We are illuminating and displaying it for our family and friends on our wedding day. It's a union to bring together our family and best friends...this is the village. We are creating something new with this marriage….This is a recipe for crazy.” -Michelle. We get it. Michelle frames it. “Let this podcast redirect the focus, if you are in the thick of planning your wedding or if you're just counting down the last couple weeks until your wedding...like, take a deep breath. This is just the beginning - it's like a fun, opening day party for the rest of your life and relationship. Recognize that no matter what happens, at the end of this day - you will be married!” -Christy. Hey, if you are going to meditate, you can use this as your mantra. “Once a decision is made, move on. That's a big piece of advice for ‘don't get crazy'. ...Don't waste brain energy and time on decisions that have already been made. Let it go. Move on.” -Christy. Seriously, move on. What does the search for a lost cat have to tell us about the nature of love and marriage? Peter Trachtenberg joins The Virtual Memories Show to try to answer that question and to talk about his work, including The Book of Calamities: Five Questions About Suffering and Its Meaning and Another Insane Devotion: On the Love of Cats and Persons! We discuss the tension between non-fiction and fiction, how to search for a lost cat, where the line is between the private and the public, how he stumbled into the lyric essay form, how the process of getting clean and sober influenced his writing, how marriages fall apart and how they (maybe) come back together, and more!
