In this episode, the team discusses a recent scientific report concerning new evidence of hominin activity 1.9 million years ago in Graunceanu, Romania, in the form of multiple cut-marked bones. The discussion continues with exciting news from Siberia, with the discovery of a Saber-Toothed Cat cub in pristine condition, shedding new scientific light on this enigmatic species. James Chatters, PhD, then joins the team to discuss his latest paper on the Western Clovis diet, which was published in Science Advances. Dr. James Chatters earned his PhD in Anthropology from the University of Washington in 1982. He is an archaeologist and paleontologist involved in discovering and investigating many of North America's earliest human skeletons. Best known for the 1996 discovery of Kennewick Man and ongoing work at the Hoyo Negro Site in the Yucatan of Mexico, he has also done extensive work in hunter-gatherer prehistory in the western US, macroevolutionary theory, palynology, and late Pleistocene mammals, most notably ground sloths. In her autobiographical book On the Warpath, archaeologist Elizabeth Weiss recounts her battles on the front lines of the culture war in academia. Her opposition to the reburial of Native American remains, her insistence that indigenous knowledge is not science, and her fight against political correctness have exposed her to numerous controversies, including a court case, cancel culture campaigns, and the university shutting her out of its collection over a photograph of her holding a skull. Weiss tells the story of her fight for science against superstition and her attempts to promote free speech and academic freedom, while examining the current challenges facing universities through her battles against absurdities such as attempts to bar “menstruating personnel” (formerly known as women) from curation facilities and plans to declare X-rays sacred for repatriation to Native Americans. Elizabeth Weiss is a controversial and world-renowned anthropology professor, specializing in the analysis of human skeletal remains. For much of her career she was based at San Jose State University, where she curated one of the largest collections of skeletal remains in the U.S. She is the author of numerous books and articles, and she played an essential role in bringing the Smithsonian's traveling exhibition “What Does it Mean to be Human?” to the San Francisco Bay Area. She's been featured in The New York Times, Science and USA Today, and has been interviewed on Fox News and Newsmax. She currently lives in New York City, where she holds a visiting fellowship with Heterodox Academy. Shermer and Weiss discuss the politicization of archaeology, covering Weiss's experiences in the field, including controversies like the Kennewick Man, the binary nature of sex in bone studies, and the impact of “wokeness” on anthropology. They also explore issues like the connection between modern tribes and ancient remains, the peopling of the Americas, and Weiss's discrimination experiences, including her lawsuit against San Jose State University.

With the 1996 discovery of his almost entire skeleton at a riverfront park in Kennewick, a man who lived 8,500 years ago along the Columbia River in what is now central Washington's Tri-Cities region became the subject of intense dispute and garnered international attention. Five local Native tribes wanted to rebury the man they honored as an ancestor and dubbed the Ancient One. The federal authorities concurred, but eight anthropologists and archaeologists filed a lawsuit to get access to the skeleton, popularly known as Kennewick Man, so they could do research on it.Listen now to learn more about the fascinating history of the Ancient One!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at:     https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastFind the podcast over on Instagram as well: @HISTORY_EVERGREENSTATEPODCASTYou can also find the podcast over on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/@historyoftheevergreenstatepodThank you for listening to another episode of the History of the Evergreen State Podcast!

It is a paper that describes the work of David Read 's "Face of a Nephite: DNA Studies & the Book of Mormon". Read is an author who advocates a "Heartlander" view of BOM events. He concludes that the remains known as Kennewick Man are that of a Nephite. Simon & Thomas demonstrate in their paper that this is probably not the case. Critics who attempt to rely on DNA evidence to attack the truth of the Book of Mormon misinterpret or misconstrue what the DNA evidence actually shows. In this presentation, Mr. Read will present more DNA evidence that has recently come to light supporting Book of Mormon claims. As one example, Mr. Read will discuss further scientific studies which again confirm that mitochondrial DNA haplogroup X (previously publicized by Rod Meldrum) is found among Native Americans and originated in the Middle East. Indeed, one recent study found a variety of haplogroup X in Egypt that is just four mutations away from the type found in Native Americans, which undermines the critics’ previous claims that Native American haplotype X2a has “too many mutations” from the haplogroup X haplotypes found in the Middle East to fit a Book of Mormon timeframe for a migration from the Middle East to the Americas.Mr. Read will also present new DNA evidence regarding Y DNA haplogroup R, which is a second non-Asian DNA type found in large numbers among some Native American groups. Mr. Read will present evidence showing that this non-Asian DNA type also predates Columbus and has a distribution pattern in common with haplogroup X. This means that there is now a second and separate line of DNA evidence that corroborates the haplogroup X information and is again consistent with the Book of Mormon. Finally, Mr. Read will explain the significance of recent findings about an ancient Native American skeleton known as Kennewick Man, whose DNA is haplogroup X, but whose carbon dating has been commonly reported as being over 8,000 years old. Because of the reported carbon dating, Kennewick Man is now often used by critics to argue that haplogroup X in the Americas predates Book of Mormon timeframes. However, this again misconstrues the evidence. Mr. Read will demonstrate that a more complete analysis of the carbon dating for Kennewick Man shows that his correct age is within Book of Mormon timeframes and once again supports the DNA evidence in favor of the Book of Mormon.David possesses many intellectual interests. Before finishing his juris doctorate in law and becoming a patent attorney and later a judge, he earned undergraduate degrees in chemistry and philosophy. Over the past 10 years, he has completed a considerable amount of research into the historical authenticity of the Book of Mormon with a particular emphasis on DNA evidence related to the Book of Mormon. Through this research, he has recently uncovered additional DNA evidence that corroborates and supports the historical authenticity of the Book of Mormon.David is an accomplished researcher. Over his career as a patent attorney, he has collaborated with inventors in numerous scientific fields. These include pharmaceuticals, medical devices, firearms, computer software, hybrid vehicles, battery technologies, pollution control technologies, textile manufacturing equipment, diesel and gasoline engines, chemical testing equipment, agricultural chemicals, turbocharging systems, fuels, coal gasification, and power plant technologies. His work required him to reliably evaluate the state of established scientific knowledge in various scientific fields. He has taken that experience and applied it here to the DNA evidence related to Native Americans.David lives in Michigan. In order to understand the story and controversy of the Kennewick Man, also known as The Ancient One, we need to go way back to the ethnographers, anthropologists, and archaeologists of the 19th century. These men sought to unlock the mysteries of race by collecting skulls and bones they could measure and examine, and ultimately, they constructed a theory of race that confirmed their own racist world views, one which we still use today. Two and a half hours drive from where I live is a small city called Kennewick. It is similar to other towns in Washington State that are east of the Cascade mountains; it is dry, flat, and has a climate that is close to that of a desert. In this area, at a park next to the Columbia river, two men came across an intact(1) skull just ten feet from the shore. The whole skeleton was excavated soon afterwards. As scientists studied it, they found that it was the most intact and well preserved skeleton of any ancient tribesman of the Americas. But who was this man, and which tribe had he belonged to? Five Native American tribes claimed that he belonged to one of them, and therefore legally the skeleton needed to be returned to his land of origin and given a proper burial. These tribes are: the Colville, Yakama, Umatilla, Nez Perce, and Wanapum. A court case developed because of this. The man had been found on federal land, and so the 'Kennewick man', as he was named, became the property of the U.S Army Corp of Engineers. However, Native Americans have a lot of legal rights, especially when it comes to excavations(2) of bones or artifacts(3) on land that used to be theirs. Years went by, and many studies were carried out on the skeleton. Some scientists believed that the man was one of the early natives who had originally crossed the Bering Straight ice bridge from Russia. Others believed that he had come to the Americas by sea from Asia. So who was right? The case came to an end after the Corp of Engineers had scientists in Copenhagen, Denmark study the skeleton using the latest DNA testing. The results were that he was about 8,500 years old, and genetically closest to Native Americans such as the Colville Indians. This discovery was a victory for the native tribes, and so, with reverence and satisfaction the Kennewick man was reburied in tribal territory.  1. 'Intact' means 'altogether' or 'in one piece'. A verb that we often use with 'intact' is 'to remain'. a. When we bought the old house, we found very old documents in the attic. They were all intact. b. Even after our terrible argument, my dignity remained intact. 2. 'Excavations' from the verb 'to excavate'. This noun and verb are used in contexts of archeology and construction. a.The land must be excavated and leveled before the concrete is poured for the main floor of the house. b. Excavation will continue at Stone Henge because of the recent, extensive discoveries. 3. 'Artifact' is another archeological word meaning an object that was made or used by man. a. In the local museum, you can actually find many artifacts used by Native American Indians. b. York is a place where artifacts are being found all the time because of its rich and ancient history. i for online English practice with a native teacher.

Now the news continues.A new study shows that 20 conditions make up more than half of all health care spending in the United States. The study examined spending on diseases and injuries.U.S. researchers tracked the costs associated with 155 conditions between 1996 and 2013. They found that a total of 30 trillion U.S. dollars was spent by Americans in personal health care over the 18-year period. Of these conditions, diabetes was the most expensive, totaling 101 billion dollars in diagnoses and treatments in 2013, while heart disease was the second most expensive, costing 88 billion dollars the same year. The study shows that costs associated with diabetes have grown 36 times more compared to those for heart disease. Heart disease was the number-one cause of death for the study period. The two conditions typically affect individuals who are 65 years of age and older. Back pain is the third-most expensive condition, primarily striking adults of working age.The three top spending categories, along with hypertension and injuries from falls, comprised 18 percent of all personal health spending, totaling 430 billion dollars in 2013.You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Chinese and German archaeologists have found images of what they believe to be Arabian horses in cliff paintings dating back 2,000 years in the Yinshan Mountains of north China&`&s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The images of Arabian horses have been found in a dozen cliff paintings, which also contain images of other animals and humans. The images are believed to be the oldest found to date. The horses are depicted in the paintings, with armor, leather saddles and stirrups. The pictures were painted around 210 B.C., when the nomadic Huns were at war with a nomadic tribe from north China.More than 10,000 ancient cliff paintings have been found in the Yinshan Mountains.Experts say the pictures suggest that the Huns had trade links with people in western Asia and northern Africa at that time.Earlier archaeological excavations in Erdos in Inner Mongolia unearthed bronze and pottery figurines of Arabian horses. This is Special English."The Ancient One" is going home. One of the oldest and most complete skeletons found in North America will be given back to Native American tribes in Washington State for reburial.President Barack Obama has signed a bill with a provision requiring the ancient bones known as Kennewick Man to be returned to tribes within 90 days.Experts estimate the remains found in 1996 on federal land near the Columbia River are at least 8,400 years old. The discovery triggered a lengthy legal fight between tribes and scientists over whether the bones should be buried immediately or studied. In 2015, new genetic evidence determined the remains were related to modern Native Americans. The bill transfers the skeleton, which the tribes call "the Ancient One", from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to the state archaeology department, which will give it to the tribes. The Yakama Nation is among the tribes that have pushed to rebury the bones in the manner their people have followed since ancient times. It took 20 years for the tribes to successfully fight for the return of the bones. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Australia&`&s Victorian iconic Great Ocean Road is set for a major upgrade after it was damaged by a number of natural disasters last year. The Victorian Government has announced that 38 million U.S. dollars will be spent on urgent repairs and safety upgrades to the 240-kilometer-long national heritage-listed road. The road runs along Victoria&`&s south-east coast, and was significantly damaged by bushfires at Wye River in December 2015 and January 2016, as well as a number of serious landslides in September caused by higher than average rainfall for the year. The upgrades for the popular tourist destination will be retainer walls, erosion prevention, rock fall netting, electronic traveler information signs, closed circuit television monitoring and real-time traffic counters. This is Special English.Eight out of 10 middle-aged people in England weigh too much, drink too much or don&`&t exercise enough. An analysis from Public Health England says modern life taking its toll on health.Public Health England has launched a campaign to reach out to 83 percent of men and women aged 40 to 60 who are either overweight or obese, exceed alcohol guidelines or are physically inactive. The aim of the campaign is to provide free support to help them live more healthily in 2017 and beyond.Modern life is harming the health of the nation with 77 percent of men and 63 percent of women in middle age, overweight or obese. Obesity in adults has shot up 16 percent in the last 20 years. In this episode, Dave and his favorite certified genetic counselor, Katey Mayberry, take a look at the genetic evidence for the settlement of the Americas. The first article, by Rasmussen et al in Nature, deals with the controversial origins of Kennewick Man/the Ancient One, a skeleton found in Washington State and dating back at least 8400 years. The second article, written by Llamas et al in Science Advances, deals more generally with the early migrations into the Americas. Over a couple Canadian beers, we talk about Y-DNA, mtDNA, haplotypes, TMRCA, single-nucleotide polymorphism, and high posterior density with varying levels of success! Follow along at home as I try to make sense of the charts on p.4 of Llamas et al!  This is a highly specialized field, but as Katey makes clear, if used carefully it can be extremely useful to world historians of all types. Consider the rational versus the regular universe. Regular is always consistent. An irrational universe usually means an irregular universe. Explore an example in the discovery of the Kennewick Man as there are two conflicting and opposite truth claims. We must believe that there is a rational universe. Consider that Greek thinking and intellectualism alone would not have led to modern science. In Plato we generally read a dialogue. Plato believed in a rational universe and set the playing field for all of western thought. Explore Plato's Cave. In his view, when we experience the world, we don't experience the real forms. For Plato, in the real realm of ideas there are perfect forms and all we see are shadowy representations of them. By reason we can escape the cave into the light of real true truth. Consider that the idea of perfect ideal goodness is rational and reasonable and best revealed in God. Greek culture was primarily doing the search for truth by means of reason and rationality. In Greece we get a foundation of rational thinking and a view of the rational universe. Cosmos is the idea of a rational unity to the whole universe.

Engineers investigating the mishap found the charred remains of a furry creature near a gnawed-through power cable. Then, nimble-fingered robots that exactly mimic the movements of a human hand could soon be used to help decommission nuclear power stations. Remote-controlled robots with hand-like manipulators are used in many situations that are difficult or dangerous for humans, such as bomb disposal. Then, a Kansas witness at Clearwater recalled a UFO incident from the 60s when she and two family members had an encounter with a disc-shaped UFO that shot a beam of light inside their vehicle. Then, the ancient skeleton known as Kennewick Man is related to modern Native American tribes, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Wednesday, opening the process for returning to a tribe for burial one of the oldest and most complete set of bones ever found in North America. The Northwestern Division of the corps said its decision was based on a review of new information, particularly recently published DNA and skeletal analyses. The corps, which owns the remains, said the skeleton is now covered by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. After the break, Kyle brings up one of the most mysterious missing person cases ever "D.B. Cooper". To this day, no one knows his real name but on Nov. 24, 1971, everyone in America was talking about the mysterious man who called himself D.B. Hello Everyone, sorry for the late release of this episode, I want to justify it with complaining about my life but I digress here is an episode of me rambling for an age. I would be in error if I didn't mention Tim Hunt and his recent comments (old news now) - relating to our own specific conversations in archaeology. Next up a story about a biblical vase and a name that appeared in the Bible. News about the Kennewick Man.  I finish the episode with a rant about the importance of Archaeology because it wouldn't be me if I didn't!     Links: Download the Episode Here http://news.discovery.com/history/archaeology/rare-inscription-bearing-biblical-name-found-in-israel-150616.ht
