People of faith understand that the universe is created by God, that He is a good God, and that he rewards those who seek after Him. People of faith have hope not in their own performance, but in the performance of God. They hope not in their works, but in the completed work of Christ. People of faith recognize their need of God. Their reputation here in this world is rarely recognized, but they have a reputation somewhere else. They have a reputation with God as those who know and love Him and those who are known and loved by Him. God is not so much concerned about the quality of our faith as the object of our faith. Our faith is in Him. He's not asking us to conjure up more faith. No, He wants us to awaken to the One who was faithful, to put our trust in Him, in His ultimate faithfulness to the Father, in accomplishing all of the Father's purposes. And now our faith enables us to see that and to participate in what God is doing now here among us, to walk with Him and to continue to know and discover His heart—not only for us, but for the whole world. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will walk by faith, that I will participate with Him in His purposes and His plan and in His joy. That's a prayer that I have for my family, too, for my wife, my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. The Holy Spirit had Isaiah record a prophesy that "the government shall be upon his shoulder"--a baby in a manger. Today, David examines what no one ought to overlook: Even SCOTUS knows that God prepared the Western world for His Son's Kingdom. But the Spirit also said the scope of his governance and of its peace would increase. What are Christians and non-Christian to think of that part of the prophesy today? TODAY'S DEVOTION: He is an anchor for your soul. The most real, the most essential part of your identity is your soul. Our flesh, our bodies, they fail and one day will be no more as they are. But our soul will remain. Our soul is eternal. Hebrews 6:19 says, this hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary. It's so easy for us to lose ourselves in this storm-filled world, but the truest thing about your soul is found and anchored in your union with Christ. This anchor is held fast in the most secure and private and intimate of places with God. The holy of holies is being described here in chapter 6, verse 19 and 20. He goes on to say, it leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary. Jesus has already gone in there for us. The anchor of our souls leads us through the curtain, into the inner sanctuary—that intimate, private, secure, safe place. The truest thing about you is found and is at rest with God. God has set aside this place to reveal Himself to you and to reveal you to you. He wants you to know who you really are. So don't let the world determine the truest thing about you. Don't let your past determine the truest thing about you. He has established that already: you are anchored securely with him. As you walk with God and spend time in his presence, he will reveal your soul to you. So come to him recognizing that you're anchored in him, allowing him to lead you into that most secure of places, right with him. There you'll find the life, the hope, the courage, the strength that you need to move forward in this life with joy. And that's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. In this installment of Vos Group, Camden Bucey and Lane Tipton explore pages 392–395 of Geerhardus Vos's Biblical Theology and his rich, God-centered understanding of righteousness within the kingdom of God. They emphasize that true righteousness is never a human-centered moral construct but is rooted entirely in the character, will, and sovereign rule of the triune God. Vos contrasts biblical righteousness with pagan and modern distortions that treat ethics as merely horizontal or civic. Instead, righteousness is what agrees with, pleases, and exists for God—meaning believers live every moment coram Deo, before His face, in covenant fellowship. The episode also unpacks how righteousness relates organically to the coming of God's kingdom: it is concurrent with God's reign, a gift worked by the Spirit, and graciously rewarded for Christ's sake. St Isaac begins Homily Six like one who will not let us hide from ourselves. He does not admire our efforts nor comfort our vanity. He forces us to look directly at what we are and at what we truly desire. A man who slips into accidental sins, he says, is not wicked but weak. And God allows this weakness to appear so that the conscience is pierced and the truth becomes unavoidable. God does not let the soul rise above these falls before its second birth because He wants us awake rather than respectable. Our failures become a kind of mercy. They expose the illusion that we are strong or self sufficient or spiritually advanced. They ask one question above all others. Do you desire God at all It is a raw question. A frightening question. Yet every stumble presses it deeper into the heart. If we fall and tremble the heart is alive. If we fall and justify ourselves the heart is asleep. Isaac calls that shameless. He says that without fervent faith or fear or chastisement the soul will never truly draw near to the love of God. These are not punishments but the three torches that light the way toward Him. If I resist them I do not want God himself. I want an idol shaped like comfort or control or admiration. Then Isaac turns to the roots beneath the roots. Turbulent thoughts come from gluttony. Ignorance and superficiality come from constant talk. Worry over worldly matters scatters the soul like chaff tossed into the wind. These are not merely moral observations. They are spiritual symptoms. They show us the condition of the heart. I can fast until my stomach twists and keep vigil until my knees ache yet if my thoughts are full of resentment or anxious grasping or the need to preserve my image then all my labors remain barren. The body strains while the passions settle deeper into the mind. Nothing changes because nothing inside has surrendered. Isaac gives an image that cuts to the bone. The man who clings to anxiety or covetousness or the memory of wrongs is like one who sows seed into thorns. He works. He sweats. He prays. He begs God to respond. Yet when he lies on his bed he groans because he cannot reap a harvest. The soil itself has been sabotaged by his thoughts. He fasts and wonders why God does not see. He humbles himself outwardly yet inwardly still clings to his own desires. God answers through the prophet. In the very day of your fasts you do your own wills. You sacrifice your free will to your own idols when you should be offering it to Me. It is one of the most devastating revelations in Scripture. The greatest offering we possess is the free will. And we lay it not on the altar of God but before our own desires. Here Isaac is not simply giving ascetical instruction. He is tearing open the heart to expose its truth. He is asking us to face the one question we spend our lives avoiding. Do you really want God or do you only want the appearance of holiness. Do you want the Kingdom or do you want the feeling of being spiritual. Do you want the fire of God or do you want to protect your own self created identity. Until we answer this honestly all asceticism remains external and fruitless. The early lines of Homily Six are not gentle. They are surgical. They strip away excuses and self deception. They show us that the spiritual life is not perfected by effort alone but by the purification of desire. Not by striving but by surrender. Not by vigils and fasts but by a heart emptied of its own will. I will never know God until I want Him more than I want myself. And my accidental sins are the strange mercy that reveals how much I still cling to myself. Isaac begins with our weakness so that we might finally seek the One who heals. He begins with our falls so that true longing may rise. These are the last two instructions given in this reading from verse 14. Since we have a great high priest who has entered heaven, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. What is it you believe? Do you believe that you have to perform for God in order to find life and favor with God? This is the cornerstone of all religion. You do this and God will do that. Quid pro quo—this for that. But the writer wants you to hold firmly to something altogether different. He's not telling you to hold firmly to religion. He wants you to hold firmly to what you believe. And what we believe is the gospel. We believe in Jesus. He is the gospel. And the gospel is not about you. It's not about your performance. It's about Him. It's about what Christ has done for us. It's resting in him, in his performance, if you will, and in his life and work for us, seen ultimately in its culmination in his life, his death, his resurrection, his ascension. When we hold firmly to him, we can come boldly to him—to the throne of grace. You can come boldly because you are not coming on the basis of your own merit, but on his. It is there that you will find grace and help in your time of need. And that time is now. We are always in need of the gospel in our lives. We are always in need of grace and help. We are always in need of Him. So hold firmly to the gospel and come boldly to him, the One who sits on a throne of grace. That's the prayer that I have for my own heart today, for my own soul. And that's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. And in emphasizing that, he draws people's attention to what is coming. John the Baptist is the announcer, he is the proclaimer of a kingdom that he will not participate in the way each of us are called and invited to participate in it. Closing Prayer  Father, there are so many signs and wonders that point us to you. Help us to be receptive and open, just as John the Baptist needed people to understand his message of the end of a system, and the announcement of a new system. We live in a culture obsessed with comfort — engineered to make every part of life easier, faster, and more convenient. But the way of Jesus has always been different. God consistently forms His people through challenge, pressure, and discomfort. Read Online“Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the Kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the Kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force.” Matthew 11:11–12The two sentences in the passage above can be challenging to comprehend, but the insights of Church Fathers and saints offer us a deeper understanding.In the first sentence, Jesus declares John the Baptist to be the greatest of those born of women, highlighting John as the last and greatest of the Old Testament prophets. However, John did not live to see the fullness of Christ's work—His death, resurrection, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. This is why Jesus adds, “yet the least in the Kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” In other words, even the smallest person who receives sanctifying grace through Christ's redemptive work is greater in spiritual privilege than the greatest person before the era of grace.The second sentence may be even more puzzling. How can the Kingdom of Heaven suffer violence, and who are the violent ones taking it by force? The Greek words translated as “violence” and “violent” can also be understood as “forcefully advancing” and those who “advance with force and determination.” Jesus is teaching that entering the Kingdom of God requires great determination, a forceful rejection of sin, and a vigorous pursuit of holiness.Together, these sentences reveal Jesus' message about the incredible blessing of living in the time of grace. We are more privileged than even John the Baptist because we live in the fullness of the Christian dispensation. However, this privilege comes with a responsibility: we must engage in a “violent” battle against our fallen nature, the temptations of the world, and the deceptions of the devil. Entering the Kingdom of God requires zeal, determination, and an all-consuming passion for the things of God.It's easy to fall into a mediocre practice of our Christian faith, letting our disordered desires and emotions dictate our actions. But Jesus calls us to something greater. Those who understand the Christian life as a spiritual battle against sin will be prepared to move beyond mediocrity into a fervent, committed embrace of God's grace, becoming fuller participants in the Kingdom of Heaven. Reflect today on how actively you are receiving and cooperating with God's grace. Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone, repent of every sin, and passionately choose to follow Christ? Though this path requires great sacrifice, the reward of the Kingdom of Heaven is worth it a hundredfold. My most glorious Lord, the gift of Your grace is all I need to achieve the greatness to which You call me. Please pour forth that grace in abundance, and help me to respond to Your invitation to repent of my sin so that I may become a more active member of Your glorious Kingdom of Heaven on Earth and ultimately in Heaven. Paul, standing at the finish line, looking back at his protégé Timothy, wants to give him—and us—some perspective for our journey. Stay focused. There's no off season. Do what you're called to do. Preach the word of God and offer the gospel of Christ. Correct, rebuke, and encourage people into and with the gospel. Keep a clear mind. Renew your mind by staying focused on the gospel. Don't be afraid. You'll have to suffer in this life, but the suffering will pass, and God will be with you each step of the way. You must keep focused and stay in the fight. The race has an endpoint, and we see Paul at the threshold. He says, "I've run the race. I've finished it. I've won the prize." Brothers and sisters, there is a prize that awaits us—a crown of righteousness: absolute wholeness, healing, and joy. Having finished his race and looking back from that line, Coach Paul has us in the coach's corner and he's calling out to us: courage, wisdom, perspective. Receive it well. Take it to heart. Stay focused and don't be afraid. Keep fighting the fight. Keep your mind clear and run to the end. God is with you and he is good. That is the prayer that I have for my own soul today. It's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. There is a remarkable clarity in these sayings and stories a piercing simplicity that both unsettles and consoles. The Evergetinos places before us the most difficult and necessary truth. The evil done to us is not a detour on the spiritual path but the path itself. Wickedness does not destroy wickedness. Resentment never cures resentment. Anger never frees us from anger. Only goodness that is unmerited and uncalculating has the power to unmake what evil intends to build. It is a truth we often admire in abstraction and dread in practice. The Fathers do not theorize about forgiveness. They reveal what forgiveness becomes when enfleshed. A man betrayed unto martyrdom thanks his betrayer for delivering him to blessing. A brother who has been stealing bread from a starving elder receives not reproach but gratitude. The monk who finds his life endangered cries out to warn the very man who led him into danger and would have robbed him. These stories do not soften the challenge but intensify it. The gospel is not a philosophical proposition but a cruciform way of being. And the cross is never abstract. It always has a name and a face and a voice that has wounded us. It is in the seventh story that the Fathers hand us the key for understanding the rest. The one who injures me is not merely an adversary but a physician. The one who slanders or ignores or mocks me reveals the wound of my vainglory. The one who takes what is mine uncovers my greed. The encounter that disturbs my peace does not create the sickness. It unmasks it. To resent the one who exposes it is to reject the medicine of Christ. It is to say to the Healer not this way not through this pain not at this cost. Yet without accepting what is bitter there can be no cure. Such a word lands upon the heart with weight. It does not flatter our natural instincts or offer comforting sentiment. It is a summons to a death of self that cannot be faked and cannot be delayed without consequence. But if these stories demand much they give even more. The elder who kissed the hands of the thief died with the joy of one who knew the road to the Kingdom was paved by the mercy he showed to others. The patriarch who ransomed the man who robbed him knew the sweetness of compassion that does not remember wrongs. The elder who visited his accuser in prison tasted the freedom of one whose heart was no longer governed by injury. There is joy here not the fleeting spark of vindication but the deep quiet illumination that comes when the soul sees that nothing done to us can keep us from the Kingdom if we allow grace to transfigure it. To forgive is not merely to release another. It is to be released. To bless those who curse us is to breathe a different air. To see those who injure us as agents of healing is to discover that the road into God is not guarded by our enemies but escorted by them. The Evergetinos does not give us a map but it reveals the terrain of the heart. It shows that the spiritual life depends less on what happens to us than on how we respond. And in doing so it opens before us not just a path but a promise. Mercy is not only an obligation but a liberation. Love is not only commanded but possible. Show Us Your Face, O Lord Today's Gospel and Homily reflect on Christ's compassion and mission during Advent. Jesus travels through villages teaching, proclaiming the Kingdom, and healing every disease. Seeing the crowds “like sheep without a shepherd,” He sends His disciples to proclaim the nearness of God's Kingdom and to heal freely, just as they have freely received. Lord, Show Us Your Face The Homily then explores Advent's longing: “Lord, show us your face and we shall be saved.” This desire runs through Scripture and finds its fulfillment in the nativity, when God literally shows His face in Christ. Isaiah's prophecies reveal the coming Savior as both shoot from the stump of Jesse and root of Jesse . . . the One who appears in time yet is the eternal source of all life. Only such a divine Savior can heal humanity's deepest wound: separation from God. Christ's ministry continues this revelation . . . He shows God's face through mercy, healing, and compassion. The disciples, having been generously formed and blessed, are sent to extend that same generosity to the world. Advent, therefore, is not passive waiting but active mission: receiving Christ, becoming Christlike, and bringing His healing and hope to those who are lost. But its death will produce many new kernels, a plentiful harvest of new lives." A productive and fulfilling life comes when we take the focus off ourselves and begin to serve others. This doesn't mean that your life isn't worth anything, that abasement and self-degradation are the goal. No—your life is absolutely worthy of respect and love and care. Christ has demonstrated for us just how valuable your life is, and he has shown us the context of our lives. We are creatures made in relationship to others, and your own unique gifting and glory will find its deepest and truest expression as we pursue our lives in service to others. When we die to making this life about us, then we will have all that we want—more than we could have imagined in this life and in the life to come. And we can actually begin to do that now. Because our anxieties about our lives have been dealt with in Christ. He has restored our self-respect. He has made clear what our value is, so we don't have to try to compensate for something we think is missing, and fight to make this life all about us. The Gospel of Mark says, "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many." So let us learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others, and we will not be unproductive. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. It's a strange question, isn't it? Even the word "godly" feels like such an old-fashioned idea. But Paul tells us to train ourselves to be godly. The measure of our godliness, he says, is linked to our training—to the practices and habits we intentionally cultivate. Apparently, you can train yourself to be godly. That's quite a thought. One of the things Paul encourages Timothy to do in his training for godliness is to read the Word of God publicly. That's not just for Timothy—it's for all of us. Reading God's Word is part of our regiment, our daily training in godliness. This is elemental, foundational to our growth: by spending time in the Scriptures, we are washed clean and our minds are renewed. Our hearts are shaped. We begin, day by day, to look more and more like the One who has the words of life. So how's your training going? Are you feeling a bit out of shape in your life with God? Maybe you need a coach, someone to come alongside and encourage you as you press into these practices. That's why this podcast is here. I am your Bible reading coach, here to encourage you and journey with you as we train in godliness together. So let's keep at it. Let's never give up on this training, because there are great benefits—not only for this life, but for the life to come. In Matthew 13:44-46, Jesus tells two parables about a hidden treasure and a precious pearl to reveal a profound truth: while we often see ourselves as seekers of God's treasure, we are actually the treasure that God seeks. God takes the first step in pursuing us, demonstrated ultimately when Jesus gave His life on the cross because we were worth everything to Him. Understanding that God traded His life for us should lead us to trade our lives for Him, making Jesus our greatest treasure above all else. This creates a beautiful rhythm where Jesus sought us out and paid the ultimate price, and we respond by declaring Him as our treasure and giving everything to Him.

Gospel Luke 1:26-38 The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, "Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you." But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of Davidhis father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end." But Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?" And the angel said to her in reply, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God." Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her. Reflection When the angel Gabriel tells Mary that she is to be the mother of the Messiah, he also reveals another special birth. Elizabeth, her cousin, who is way past the time of being able to have a child, is also pregnant, and this child will be named John. It is important to note that John is the necessary link, the transition, the liminal space through which the world will understand fully the corruption of the old, and the beauty and the dignity and the value of the new. Closing Prayer Father, there's a continual work, a continual transformation from religion that has a power over us and a spirit that can enter into us and infuse us with the gifts that we're here to share with one another. Bless us in this continual transition. Never let us get lazy. Let us not fall back to what is simple and easy. Let us continue to work with this great mystery. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. John 12:26 frames service as the pathway to honor from the Father, reminding believers that following Christ means stepping into everyday ministry, wherever life places your feet. Highlights Ministry simply means “to serve,” and every follower of Christ is called into it. Jesus modeled servant leadership as the Servant King—service is imitation before function. The call isn’t to become a pastor, but to live like Jesus. Daily surrender (“die daily”) is less dramatic and more incremental—small yeses, repeated. Excuses shrink when identity grows: you serve because you are His, not to become enough. Service is worship when done in the Spirit’s power, not self-reliant hustle mode. Full Transcript Below: Zealous for Good Works By: Emily Rose Massey Bible Reading: “If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him” (John 12:26, ESV). “Ministry” is from the Greek word diakoneo, meaning “to serve.” At my church, our elders believe that every member of God’s Church is a minister, so obviously that would mean that every believer is called to serve- serve Jesus and serve His Body. Jesus was the servant of all. In fact, He was the Servant King. Christ shares in the gospel of John the importance of serving and following Him as He serves others. “If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him” (John 12:26, ESV). Jesus asks us as Christians to lay our lives down continually, denying our wants and desires, or as the Apostle Paul said to do, “die daily” (1 Corinthians 15:31). Do we know how to do that? Intersecting Life & Faith: It is human nature to seek after what our hearts and flesh crave, but we do not have to give in to that kind of nature, for we have a new nature in Christ Jesus (Colossians 3:10, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Ephesians 4:24). Some people have wrong thoughts about God and service, perhaps believing their service doesn’t matter because others have it taken care of. Or perhaps they see pastors as the ones who are qualified for service and ministry, so they don’t need to join in. But we are all priests to our God (1 Peter 2:9)! When we put our hands to the plow, so to speak, in ministry, we are worshiping God. Those who are saved by Christ will eagerly and joyfully serve Christ and His people. We have been clothed in Christ’s righteousness to match Him and follow Him. What clothes are you wearing- the world’s or Christ’s? No matter the excuse or wrong thinking regarding ministry and service, we can ask God to help us see the importance of serving the Lord and others. The Holy Spirit empowers us to set aside our selfishness and learn how to be selfless like Jesus, preferring others above ourselves. That kind of lifestyle starts in the mind, in the way we think, as we learn to think of ourselves less and look for ways to put others first. The Lord promises that the Father will honor the one who serves Christ by serving His people. As we learn to prefer others above ourselves, the Lord fills us with His love to the overflow to reach more people for His Kingdom. He will give us zeal for ministry. God is selfless, humble, gracious, and merciful, and as His children, He asks us to follow His example. We cannot do that in our own strength. The Holy Spirit will empower you, and with His grace, to be able to deny your own desires and selfish ambitions. We need God’s help to prefer others above ourselves. God’s Word transforms our minds so that we can learn how to think less of ourselves and seek to serve God and His people. Let us ask God to help us value the call to serve so we can look more like Him, ministering to whoever He puts in front of our path.
