Oh boy...This episode is longer than usual, more contentious, as it addresses the current genocidal violence in Gaza in ways that neither 'the left' nor 'the right,' as they are now called (defined?), would stand behind; except perhaps with a dagger?..We are both against what Israel is doing in Gaza, and think it ought to stop immediately (which would still be much much too late).Our discussions, our rhetoric, our frameworks of understanding, however, are neither neutral nor universal. They involve issues that precede "universal categories" of "racism" - on either "side" - to show western eyes what they cannot see about this global problem.Sagi calls it "metaphysical antisemitism," a term he borrowed from Gershom Scholem, but developed much (too much?) further. Accounts of this problem, here and now, cannot hide behind the tried and true tropes - of 'evil,' 'the right side of history,' etc. - but are viewed in a particular historical lens. Particular, because it presupposes Jewish specificity, but not to justify Israel's actions, or the manner(s) of Palestinian resistance to them. To do that we need a metaphysically sensitive analysis as to what underpins tropes like "anti-zionism," "Islamophobia" and the likes. Just because "we hate Nazis" does not necessarily mean we're on the right side of history.Just because Hitler accelerated the evacuation of a Christian, antisemitic Europe of Jews to the ancient land of Kna'an, does not make this land Zion (yet), nor him the Messiah.What can the present situation teach us, from our, Jewish, perspective, about this knot? How do we explain, without explaining away, the terrible cycle of murderous, genocidal violence that has erupted in Israel/Palestine? Probing these problems might help shine a light on a tragic impasse, where true things - real facts, real pain, real history - are employed for fallacious reasons, and yet persist (for the inaccessible truths that still burn, silent, within them). Here we try to understand the situation in a way that does not flatten the discourse to "human rights"; it demands a greater responsibility to difference than that tired (and by now at least faltering, if not highly suspect) 'humanism' that allows Christian mora frameworks to gloss over their own metaphysical assumptions, and violence. You know, like the idea of the Nation State being a solution -- imposed, by various means, upon the rest of the "civilized world" -- to an intra-Christian problem (that it did not solve). We are not anti-Christian, however, for, as the wise man said, they know not what they do. Instead of platitudes or tired binaries, here we try to think through these phenomena as conflagrations produced by a complex system of violence-erasure, a violence by other means, if you will, a violence delegated, farmed-out, rationally contracted and brutally enforced. And made invisible.The 'Colonialism' levelled at Israel hides metaphysical assumptions that need to be spelled out if the sides that truly matter, that truly suffer, in this murderous, brutal impasse - the Israeli and the Palestinian - are to be able to find common ground and a way out of this cycle. So long as the hatred that fueled the worst atrocities of October 7th, and that chants "from the river to the sea" will not be listened as to its - decidedly non-antisemitic - drive; so long as Israel's claim to self-defense is either accepted as a carte blanche for violence, or dismissed as irrelevant to this issue, the impasse will remain.We are trying to find a way out of this impasse.Cancel if you must,butlisten, if you can.

With Luai Allarakia I discuss Kuwait's political system and institutions. He lays out the most important developments since its constitution was written in 1962, and how Kuwait – a country of 4.3 million people – tries to manage its political trajectory between presidentialism and parliamentarism. It is following its own path, that is led by a hereditary monarch, the emir of Kuwait. While a lot of power is concentrated in the emir, who can appoint the prime minister, the National Assembly of Kuwait, or KNA in short, is elected by the people. Elections are a national sport in Kuwait, says Luai. He shares with us many institutional features and rules that may seem very specific to Kuwait, but are interesting to compare to other political systems. In the end, you realize that the system is based on many different written and unwritten rules and norms – like any political system. So in this conversation we really take the time to go into some detail of Kuwait's institutions and I think it's really worth it to talk about the specificities that are partly similar and partly different from a well-established democracy. Luai Allarakia is Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Richmond in the US. He got his PhD in Political Science and Government from the University of Houston, where he wrote his thesis on the Dynamics of Legislatures in Monarchical Regimes, exemplified by Kuwait's National Assembly (KNA). His research specializes in Kuwait's legislature, the Saudi Shura Council, and Gulf Arab affairs. He also regularly comments on political developments in the Gulf states. Abstract: The ability of monkeys and rats to carry out spatial working memory tasks has been shown to depend on the persistent firing of pyramidal cells in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), arising from recurrent excitatory connections on dendritic spines. These spines express hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels whose open state is increased by cAMP signaling, and which markedly alter PFC network connectivity and neuronal firing. In traditional neural circuits, activation of these non-selective cation channels leads to neuronal depolarization and increased firing rate. Paradoxically, cAMP activation of HCN channels in PFC pyramidal cells reduces working memory-related neuronal firing. This suggests that activation of HCN channels may hyperpolarize rather than depolarize these neurons. The current study tested the hypothesis that Na+ influx through HCN channels activates Na+-activated K+ (KNa or Slack) channels to hyperpolarize the membrane. We have found that HCN and Slack KNa channels co-immunoprecipitate in cortical extracts and that, by immunoelectron microscopy, they colocalize at postsynaptic spines of PFC pyramidal neurons. A specific blocker of HCN channels, ZD7288, reduces KNa current in pyramidal cells that express both HCN and Slack channels, indicating that blockade of HCN channels reduced K+ current indirectly by lowering Na+ influx. In contrast, ZD7288 has no effect on KNa currents in an HEK cell line stably expressing this Slack channels but no HCN channels, demonstrating that ZD7288 does not block Slack channels directly. Activation of HCN channels by cAMP in a cell line expressing a Ca2+ reporter results in elevation of cytoplasmic Ca2+, but the effect of cAMP is completely reversed if the HCN channels are co-expressed with Slack channels. Finally, we have used a novel pharmacological blocker of Slack channels to show that inhibition of either Slack or HCN channels in rat PFC improves working memory performance, and that the actions of Slack and HCN channel blockers occlude each other in the memory task. Our results suggest that the regulation of working memory by HCN channels in PFC pyramidal neurons is mediated by an HCN-Slack channel complex that links activation HCN channels to suppression of neuronal excitability. Abstract: KCNT1 encodes the sodium-activated potassium channel Slack (KCNT1, KNa1.1), an important mediator of neuronal membrane excitability. Gain-of-function (GOF) mutations in humans lead cortical network hyperexcitability and seizures, as well as very severe intellectual disability. Using a mouse model of Slack GOF-associated epilepsy, we found that both excitatory and inhibitory neurons of the cerebral cortex have increased Na+-dependent K+ (KNa) currents and voltage-dependent sodium (NaV) currents. The characteristics of the increased KNa currents were, however, different in the two cell types such that the intrinsic excitability of excitatory neurons was enhanced but that of inhibitory neurons was suppressed. We further showed that the expression of NaV channel subunits, particularly that of NaV1.6, is upregulated and that the length of the axon initial segment (AIS) and of axonal NaV immunostaining is increased in both neuron types. We found that the proximity of the AIS to the soma is shorter in excitatory neurons than in inhibitory neurons of the mutant animals, potentially contributing to the different effects on membrane excitability. Our study on the coordinate regulation of KNa currents and the expression of NaV channels may provide a new avenue for understanding and treating epilepsies and other neurological disorders. Dr. Eva Stone is a resilience engineer.   Resilience engineering is a term defined as the "focus on understanding the nature of adaptations, learning from success and increasing adaptive capacity."    She is the District Health Manager of Jefferson County Public Schools, Kentucky's largest school system with 98,000 students.  Eva earned her bachelor's degree in Nursing from West Virginia University and her master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Kentucky.    She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor with the University of Kentucky College of Nursing.  Dr. Stone was selected as the 2015 Health Schools Campaign School Nurse Leadership Award, the 2019 Kentucky Nurse Association Nurse of the Year and named a 2020 Louisville Business First Health Care Hero.   She has worked in public school health for over 20 years, and equips her nursing team with tools needed to break down the tall barriers that stand between children and their education.   She is a strong advocate for policy change in Kentucky, and drove legislative change to amend the state of Kentucky's Medicaid plan to allow for expanded billing for school health services to help increase access to care for children.  Her passion is evident: the health of students.  She seeks to adapt and improve educational spaces to facilitate physical, social, and cognitive growth of public school students. Be on the lookout: Dr. Stone is a leader on the Kentucky Nurses Association and is on the Kentucky School Nurse Task Force.  This year the KNA continues hold legislative priorities and will be advocating for the for the presence of a school nurse in every school, all day, and every day throughout Kentucky. Disclaimer: The views expressed by guests on this podcast represent their own and their appearance does not imply an endorsement of them or any entity they represent.   Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect the view of the University of Kentucky or UK Healthcare.

Eine Gruppe katholischer Seelsorgerinnen und Seelsorgern ruft für den 10. Mai 2021 zu bundesweiten Segensgottesdiensten für Liebende auf. Die Seelsorger reagieren damit auf das Nein des Vatikans zur Segnung homosexueller Paare, dem _Responsum ad dubium_ der Kongregation für die Glaubenslehre. Im Vorfeld der bundesweiten Segensgottesdienste unter den Hashtags #mutwilligSegnen und #liebegewinnt spricht Dr. Karin Wollschläger (KNA) mit dem Mainzer Moraltheologen Prof. Dr. Stephan Goertz, was er von der Aktion hält und wie er die Reaktion von Bischof Dr. Georg Bätzing, dem Vorsitzenden der Deutschen Bischofskonferenz, bewertet. Today on The Leaders' Brief - The USA, which remains the worst affected country due to the 2019 coronavirus, but continues to lead one of the most effective vaccination programmes in the world, is seeing a slow but steady dip in the number of weekly infections. The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention revealed last Monday that as of April 24, the seven-day average was 57,123 cases, a dip of almost 15% in comparison to the previous week. Most experts believe that, unlike previous dips, the slow down in the rate of infection will be permanent this time as the USA continues to immunise its population.  Myanmar witnessed its largest violence since February after the military clashed with the Karen National Union at its eastern border with Thailand days after Southeast Asian leaders said they had reached a consensus with the Junta on ending violence. Following reports of gunfire and smoke from a Tatmadaw camp at the Thailand-Myanmar border, the region's ethnic army the KNA said that they had captured the outpost. According to local media, over 240,000 people have been displaced by the conflict and the region has witnessed military airstrikes.  Apple's new software update is likely to hurt smaller firms dependent on digital advertising while providing its users with more privacy protection. The decision to allow iPhone and iPad users to choose how much information they wish to share with any third party application has reignited a tiff between Apple CEO Tim Cook and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. September 2020 findet die Herbstvollversammlung der Deutschen Bischofskonferenz in Fulda statt und wird erstmalig vom Limburger Bischof Dr. Georg Bätzing geleitet. Dieser zeigt sich beispielsweise in der Frage der Frauenordination reformwillig und bekam viel Gegenwind, u. a. vom Erzbischof von Köln, Rainer Kardinal Woelki. Burlington, Ontario's Kill No Albatross is prepping for a full album but in the meantime, the band has dropped a new EP Speak True Evil.  Guitarist Alex Crosty said the band is amped after performing on the last Van's Warped Tour, which wrapped up this month. Cheryl Gilliam has more than 35 years of professional experience in the medical and food industries working for companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Heinz USA, Sara Lee Bakery, Kraft Foods and currently, for “Tony the Tiger” at Kellogg’s in the Legal and Compliance department. She currently serves as Board Secretary on the West Michigan LGBT & Allies Chamber of Commerce and is a founding Board Member of the organization.    She also serves on the Board of Directors as Vice President for OutFront Kalamazoo and is a member of the Michigan State University Athletics Council and MSU Varsity S Club Board of Directors as immediate Past President. While at MSU, she won a total of 13 individual Big Ten Championships and also earned All American honors.  In 1980, she finished 7th in the 200m finals at U.S. Olympic Trials and competed in Europe as a member of the Muhammad Ali Track Club.In 2014, she was awarded the top award at W. K. Kellogg K Values Award for Kellogg North America for Diversity and Inclusion and in 2015 she was award the W. K. Kellogg Global Value Awards representing KNA.  She was also the recipient of the 2015 World Packaging Organization (WPO) WordStar Award for Packaging, presented in Milan, Italy.  In 2016, she and her team was awarded the William K. Kellogg K Values Award for Diversity and Inclusion for the #SpiritDay project.Ms. Gilliam champions senior and youth programs. She enjoys volunteering with youth anti bully programs and youth mentoring programs that help young people achieve their aspirations.
