As our nation navigates turbulent times, what can artists do to effect change? Award-winning composer and Rochester native Adolphus Hailstork has been outspoken about this question, especially when it comes to injustices against African Americans. "These are the tragedies and triumphs of a people who have been beaten up for 400 years. Does anyone speak for them? Who writes pieces that speak for the existence of African Americans in the United States?" he asks. "I'll take on that job.'" Hailstork's work blends African, American, and European traditions. In recent years, his pieces like “A Knee on the Neck” — an oratorio in tribute to George Floyd — have made political statements. He'll be in Rochester this weekend for a choral concert in his honor, but first, he joins us on “Connections” to discuss the intersection of art and politics. This conversation is part of WXXI's celebration of Black History Month. Joyce Jackowski's Journey to a New Knee Recovering with Agility: Joyce Jackowski's Journey to a New Knee In the latest episode of The Bee's Knees Podcast, host Mary Elliott sits down with Joyce Jackowski, a Florida resident and competitive dog agility enthusiast who recently reached the four-week milestone following a total knee replacement on her right knee. For Joyce, the surgery wasn’t just about ending pain; it was about reclaiming a lifestyle defined by movement. After temporary injections failed to provide lasting relief, Joyce realized that to continue running with her dogs, she needed a permanent solution. Her story is a testament to the power of preparation, discipline, and finding the right technology to aid in recovery Choosing a recovery path was a deeply personal decision for Joyce, influenced heavily by her husband's difficult experience with a traditional recovery that required a painful “manipulation under anesthesia”. Determined to avoid a similar fate, Joyce followed the advice of a friend—another dog agility competitor—and looked into the X10 machine. Despite her surgeon's initial skepticism, Joyce was drawn to the results she saw online and decided to take charge of her own rehabilitation by bringing the X10 into her home. “My goal was to get back to being able to do all of my dog sports… I have been past the curve for all my measurements this whole time.” – Joyce X10 Therapy The first two weeks of recovery were a significant mental and physical struggle, marked by intense post-surgical pain. Joyce found herself questioning the decision to have surgery as her daily schedule became entirely consumed by a rigorous cycle of X10 sessions and physical therapy exercises. However, her discipline paid off quickly. Her home physical therapist noted that she was “way above the curve,” reaching normal range-of-motion measurements much faster than average. Today, Joyce's flexion is at 122 degrees, firmly within the normal range of 120 to 125 degrees. “The X10 machine really helped, but the component that makes this program above the top was having the coach support.” – Joyce Overcoming Challenges | The Human Element of Recovery Beyond the technology of the X10, Joyce credits her success to the human element of her recovery: Coach Kim. Having a dedicated coach to provide emotional support, technical advice, and even simple lifestyle tips—like listening to music during sessions or taking a drive to escape the “cabin fever” of recovery—made all the difference. This support system helped Joyce navigate the “down times” and corrected her when she was over-extending herself, such as the time she mistakenly tried to walk down the street the very night she returned from the hospital “Do your exercises. Do them even if you don’t feel like it… Give yourself a break, but do not take a cheat and do not do it at all.” – Joyce Now four weeks out, Joyce is walking without a cane inside her home and looks forward to returning to the dog sports she loves. Her advice to others facing a similar journey is simple: stay disciplined with your exercises. While it is okay to give yourself a mental break on tough days, she emphasizes that you must never “cheat” on the work required to heal. By combining the right tools with a relentless drive, Joyce has turned a daunting surgery into a successful first step back toward her passions.

For more than two centuries, the American legal system has operated on a core assumption: lawyers are not punished for the conduct or politics of their clients. In this episode of New Law Order, Jeffrey Toobin examines what happens when that premise is tested by executive power. The interview is co-hosted by Joel Cohen, founder of TalksOnLaw, and John Morley, a Yale Law School professor whose scholarship focuses on the structure and economics of law firms. Together, they explore how executive actions directed at major firms—absent allegations of illegality—operate less as regulation and more as deterrence, why some firms chose litigation while others accommodated, and what these choices reveal about institutional risk, professional independence, and the resilience of the adversarial system under political pressure. How to Earn CLE CreditListen to the full program, note the verification code announced during the recording, then log in to your TalksOnLaw account to record attendance and download your certificate. At the time of publication, this podcast is approved for 1.25 hours of General MCLE credit in California. Learn how to JournalSpeak ➡️ LEARN HOW: https://tinyurl.com/2ph33u2s In this episode, I sit down with James Bloomer after he reached out in response to my call for more male voices in the mindbody/TMS conversation. James is 64 years old and brings an honest, powerful story that spans more than two decades and five distinct TMS episodes—each one convincingly masquerading as a physical problem. Like so many people I work with, James is thoughtful, successful, and driven, with a life that looks “perfect” on the outside: a long career as a high-powered insurance executive, his own financial planning business, a strong marriage, and two adult children he adores. And yet, his body has told a very different story. James walks us through the evolution of his symptoms—total body pain, knee pain, severe back pain, gluteal pain, and finally pelvic pain and lifelong urinary frequency—and how each one came with a rational, medical explanation that ultimately wasn't true. He shares how deeply he bought into the physical narratives, spending thousands of dollars on doctors, treatments, supplements, and tools, only to eventually find relief through TMS work again and again. We even talk about the surreal moment when he picked up the phone and personally reached Dr. Sarno back in 2010. What's most striking is James's honesty about the pattern so many of us fall into: doing some of the work, getting better, and then stopping—only to be “fooled” by the next symptom. Now, using JournalSpeak and my approach consistently, James is about 75% symptom-free and doing the deeper, more uncomfortable emotional excavation that long-term healing often requires. He speaks candidly about uncovering repressed material from childhood, the emotional cost of chronic pain on his marriage, and the reality that some symptoms—especially pelvic pain and urinary issues—can take time and patience to unwind. This conversation is a reminder that TMS doesn't discriminate by gender, age, or success level, and that true healing isn't about perfection—it's about commitment, compassion, and staying in the work for life. Detroit Lions Podcast: Dan Skipper retires and coaching talk

On January 22, the Detroit Lions Podcast paused to salute Dan Skipper. The veteran offensive lineman hung up his cleats today. A remote episode, a rough travel day, and a clear purpose. Honor a singular NFL story. Dan Skipper Calls It a Career Skipper retires after battling health problems. Back issues. Knee issues. Foot issues. He fought through all of it and kept showing up for the Detroit Lions. His transaction log tells the tale. Sixty-six official NFL transactions. Fifty-seven with the Lions since 2019. He had a brief stint in Houston and an earlier dalliance with the Cowboys, but Detroit was home. He was the tallest player in the NFL at a legit 6-9 and around 330. Not quite athletic enough to lock down tackle. Too upright to be a full-time guard. Yet he stayed valuable. Practice squad, elevations, special teams, spot duty. He bridged some bad Lions teams to the best Lions teams in recent memory. He maximized his career and never lost the room. Sixth Lineman, Third Tight End, Fan Favorite Skipper carved out a niche as the sixth lineman and extra tackle. In 2025, he logged 228 offensive snaps. Eighty of those came as a third tight end in heavy packages. The Lions led the NFL in using a sixth lineman in three of the last four seasons, and Skipper was almost always that piece. He was eligible. They even threw him the ball. It worked. The appeal went beyond snaps. Training camp showed the person. A giant who signed for kids. Jovial and patient. His own kids ran around and tackled dad after practice. Fans noticed. Teammates noticed. That energy made him a Detroit Lions favorite. The 2017 Wright Game Punt Moment The origin story includes the 2017 Wright game in Saint Pete. Practice moved outside on a grass field. Skipper dominated drills that day. Coaches set a challenge to juice the session. The other side picked a player to field a punt. If he caught it clean, practice ended and the offense won. They chose Skipper. The punt was not easy. He secured it. Practice over. Offense got the win. It was a perfect snapshot of focus under pressure and why people gravitated to him. What Comes Next Skipper retires for medical reasons and moves straight into coaching. He will coach tight ends and the offensive line at the Wright game this week. That fits his path. Detroit Lions fans will miss him at camp, but his influence carries on. Sixty-six moves. One city that kept calling. A career that mattered. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #danskipper #nfltransactions #sixthlineman #extratackle #thirdtightend #fieldedapunt #2017wrightgame #specialteams #backissue #kneeissue #footissues #cowboys #houston Learn more about your ad choices. Donate (no account necessary) | Subscribe (account required) Join Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA Operations Officer, as he dives into today's top stories shaping America and the world. In this Friday Headline Brief of The Wright Report, Bryan covers the escalating confrontation between Minnesota Democrats and federal immigration authorities, growing unrest tied to anti-ICE activism, new economic signals from the White House, rising global pressure on Iran and China, and a look at medical and technology developments heading into the weekend. Minnesota Democrats Escalate Against ICE: Minnesota media outlets and national Democrats are facing backlash after doxxing the ICE officer involved in the fatal shooting of activist Renee Good. DHS officials warn the move could put officers and their families in danger, echoing past incidents in Los Angeles where officers faced threats and harassment. Vice President JD Vance defended the ICE agent, stating that video and medical evidence clearly show the officer acted in self-defense after being struck by Good's vehicle. Radicalization and Anti-ICE Networks Exposed: Reporting reveals that Good was radicalized through a charter school that prioritizes political activism and later trained with a group called ICE Watch, which teaches tactics to obstruct immigration raids. Bryan explains how activists are instructed to use vehicles, barricades, and incendiary materials to block officers, behavior he says amounts to organized domestic extremism rather than peaceful protest. ICE Operations Expand Nationwide: President Trump is sending an additional 100 ICE officers to Minneapolis, bringing total deployments there to roughly 2,000. In Portland, Oregon, two Venezuelan migrants affiliated with the Tren de Aragua gang were shot after allegedly attempting to run over an ICE officer during a traffic stop tied to a prostitution investigation. Democratic leaders condemned ICE actions in both cities, while the administration argues officers are responding to lethal threats. California Loses Federal Transportation Funding: The Trump administration is withholding 160 million dollars from California after audits found that roughly one quarter of the state's commercial driver licenses were issued unlawfully, including to foreign-born drivers who cannot read or speak English. Advocacy groups representing migrant truckers sued to block the revocations, and Governor Gavin Newsom sided with them, prompting federal retaliation. Bryan warns that unsafe licensing practices have already contributed to deadly accidents nationwide. Trump Seeks Massive Military Expansion: President Trump is proposing a $1.5 trillion defense budget, up from $900 billion currently. He argues the increase is necessary for future conflicts and could be funded through tariffs. Budget analysts warn the move could add nearly $6 trillion to the national debt over a decade, raising questions about sustainability and congressional approval. Economic Signals Show Mixed Progress: Layoffs fell in December, trade deficits shrank to their lowest levels since 2009, and the White House announced plans to purchase $200 billion in mortgage bonds to lower interest rates. Federal employment continues to decline as agencies shrink outside of DHS. Bryan notes the strategy appears to be working so far, but court rulings on tariffs could complicate the outlook. Global Pressure Builds on Iran and China: Protests are spreading across Iran, including strikes at critical oil facilities, prompting a violent crackdown by regime forces. President Trump warned that further bloodshed could trigger U.S. intervention. Meanwhile, China is tightening its grip on rare earth exports, cutting off Japan and reminding the world that Beijing will weaponize supply chains whenever it chooses. Health and Technology Updates: New research suggests that certain cancer patients may need to reconsider high glutamine diets during treatment, while UK studies confirm that stopping GLP one weight loss drugs leads to rapid weight regain. Bryan closes with optimism about new lightweight exoskeletons showcased at CES, which may help older adults and injured individuals regain mobility and independence.   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: January 9 2026 Wright Report, Renee Good ICE shooting Minneapolis, JD Vance self defense statement, ICE Watch activist training, Tren de Aragua Portland ICE shooting, California CDL audit funding withheld, Gavin Newsom migrant truck licenses, Trump defense budget one point five trillion, tariff Supreme Court ruling risk, Iran protests oil strike crackdown, China rare earth export squeeze Japan, CES exoskeleton mobility technology

A 2025 analysis of over 13,500 knee MRI scans revealed that men have more anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears overall, including ACL plus meniscus combinations, contrary to earlier data focused on female athletes Men under 40 were more likely to have trauma-driven medial collateral ligament (MCL) and meniscus injuries, while women over 40 had a higher rate of degenerative MCL and meniscus damage These patterns suggest trauma dominates in male injuries, while age-linked tissue breakdown plays a bigger role in older female patients These results can aid clinicians and radiologists in recognizing patterns of injury so they can tailor imaging protocols, risk assessments, and early intervention strategies for patients Researchers say these gender-specific patterns may change the screening, prevention, and rehabilitation for knee injury across lifespans
