IN THE NEWS:When he ran for governor, candidate Glenn Youngkin was secretly recorded talking about why he couldn't say more about abortion. Now, a candidate for the House of Delegates is explaining why a secretly recorded audio clip reveals he supports a 100 percent ban on abortion. What's going on with these secretly recorded audio conversations, and what are the journalistic ethics around reporting on the findings?Last month, the state Department of Education released model policies for school divisions across Virginia relating to transgender students. The model policies suggest that parents should have the final say about names, pronouns and bathrooms – not the students. Now the Spotsylvania School Board is the first to adopt those new model policies. Will voters in Richmond have a ballot question on a new casino this November? The question is working its way through the courts even now.At the Watercooler: Democrat Trudy Berry had all the paperwork she needed to run in Mecklenburg, but a clerical error is leaving her out of the race--and she's wondering why the State Board of Elections denied her appeal when similar issues were successfully appealed in the past. Plus, local elected officials are frustrated by the lack of a state budget.TRIVIA: How many incumbents are running unopposed in Virginia this year? Learn more at http://linktr.ee/JacklegMedia

IN THE NEWS:Guns at Polling Places: This election cycle is seeing a rise in armed poll-watchers, raising concerns about voter intimidation. Guns are prohibited at polling places in Virginia, but that only applies to 40 feet from the front door of the voting location. As Thomas, Michael, and Lauren discuss, there's a clear difference between ordinary gun-carrying citizens and clear attempts at voter intimidation.Cameras at Polling Places: Polling places have become a hotspot for vigilante surveillance, with cameras attached to political signs pointed toward ballot drop-boxes and polling places. Other reports show people taking photos of license plates and individuals traveling to and from polling places. While journalists still need to be able to do their jobs at polling places, how do we draw the line between good-faith journalism and more voter intimidation?Sample Ballots at Polling Places: Local polling places have sample ballots to help explain the voting process, but political parties also mail out their own sample ballots--often indicating the party-endorsed positions. Analysts call this an important heuristic, especially for smaller races. But what about attempts at misleading sample ballots designed to confuse voters about their local party positions? At the Watercooler: Lauren Burke discusses her latest reporting on the campaign trail following incumbent Democrats Elaine Luria and Abigail Spanberger, Thomas notes a controversy at a Prince William County polling place where Republican policies have made it difficult to field enough poll workers, and Michael highlights a ProPublica story that reveals how many Fortune 500 companies have failed to uphold their pledges after January 6th (https://www.propublica.org/article/companies-funding-election-deniers-after-january-6)Lauren Burke's podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/burkefile/id1481418341 Learn more at http://linktr.ee/JacklegMediaSponsored by the Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance of Virginia

Taylor Burke-Gilman and Lauren Burke-Devere didn't plan on joining their father at Fire-Dex, the family-owned manufacturer of head-to-toe PPE for first responders. But in 2019, they did. As they continue to settle into their roles as president — Lauren of Fire-Dex and Taylor at sister company Gear Wash — they're also learning the acquisition ropes. They discuss their transitions into the business, as well as lessons learned through three acquisitions made since they came aboard.
Climate change. Health care. Education. Debt. These are just a few of the issues being debated today in the halls of power. The results of these debates will have profound consequences for all of us, but perhaps no group will be more affected than the young. With such a clear stake in the outcome, it might be surprising to learn that as a group, young people are less likely to vote and serve in public offices than older generations. In this podcast, Dr. Christine Huebner of Nottingham Trent University and Scott Warren, co-founder of the preeminent civics education organization Generation Citizen, met with Lauren Burke of GMF Cities to discuss why young people are less engaged in traditional politics, how they are engaging, and the perennial question of whether it is better to effect change from within or force it from the outside. This discussion was inspired by the work of the Cities Fortifying Democracy project. GMF Cities, with the support of Germany's Federal Foreign Office, is leading a two-year, transatlantic multi-city cohort to explore and advance city practices in strengthening democracy. The project, called Cities Fortifying Democracy, will examine city innovations in governing, voting & elections, public safety & justice, and local journalism.

This week, I'm talking with two incredible and inspirational women - Donnie Belcher and Lauren Burke - CEO and COO respectively, of Camp Equity. These women have, multiple times in their lives, seen a deep social problem and jumped into action - as a teacher and lawyer, as a Skadden Fellow, as Echoing Green fellows, and now together, through Camp Equity. In this conversation, we talk about what it means and looks like to be both intentional and responsive to a critical moment. I loved this conversation, in large part because Donnie and Lauren have rooted their organization in the values and working principles of equity. We talk about how from the beginning of Camp Equity, as they mapped out everything from their working relationship to how they would hire to how they would structure funding partnerships, equity in practice has been at the core; Not an add-on, but THE frame for decision making. We talk about what it actually looks like for a nonprofit to try to grow that way. Finally, we blend the big-picture, strategic and tactical. We talk about deep issues like racial equity and systemic change and mindset gremlins, and Donnie and Lauren share highly practical, concrete strategies and lessons about fundraising, early hiring, program design, and launching a nonprofit more generally. Ultimately, I just deeply admire these two women. This conversation sheds light on their world-changing organization, their amazing partnership, and some of the realities of launching, doing, and living social change work.

----more----March is Women’s History Month and there is no better time to welcome my three guests Lauren Burke, Hanna K. Chapman and Kaley Bales, the creative team behind Why She Wrote. Their book examines 18 of the greatest women authors of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Some are familiar favorites; others have undeservedly fallen into obscurity. Their hardcover book is being published by Chronicle Books and will available on April 20th. Chapters written by Lauren Burke and Hanna K. Chapman include an introduction to author, fun facts, a bibliography of selected works and a comic followed by the artist Kaley Bales. Why She Wrote will explore: Why did Jane Austin struggle to write for the first five years before her first novel was ever published? How did Edith Maude Eaton’s writing change the narrative around Chinese immigrant workers in North American? Why did the Brontë sisters choose to write under male pen names, and Anne Lister write her personal diaries in code? Also, we will learn the origin of Lauren and Hanna first meeting, how it led developing their podcast Bonnets at Dawn and ultimately their book Why She Wrote. We will also learn about Lauren’s other recent work It’s Her Story: Rosa Parks, Hanna’s Comic Book Slumber Party anthology and Kaley’s illustrations and prints. I close out our interview asking my 9 Questions which include: their pet peeves, missed opportunities and when each took a risk. In Chapter 33 of Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, Anne is reciting "The Maiden's Vow" at a concert at the White Sands Hotel. Diana helps Anne get ready at Green Gables, and the girls ride over with Jane Andrews and her brother Billy. When Anne gets to the performers' dressing room, she suddenly is struck by how wealthy many of the performers are, and is paralyzed by stage fright -- until she notices Gilbert Blythe in the crowd. Will Anne be able to recite her poem? Will the audience be as critical as she fears? Will Anne be so dazzled by all the "wealth and culture" that she is no longer content with her life in Avonlea? After the chapter reading, stick around for reflections with Lauren Burke, host of the podcast Bonnets at Dawn (this part of the episode begins at 19:06). Lauren and I talk about what makes Montgomery such a good writer; themes of imposter syndrome, shame and class in this chapter; and why Lauren wants to read this chapter to her daughter someday.

Hunger Clean-up is Marquette’s largest and longest-running day of community service. Since its beginning in 1989, over 34,000 students, faculty, staff and alumni have volunteered to get off campus and help in service sites throughout Milwaukee. Each year, nearly 1,500 students, staff and alumni serve at 45–50 nonprofit work sites, such as food banks, homeless shelters and other organizations. The goal isn’t just to volunteer. The larger mission is to help build community together, contribute to social change, and learn about ourselves and our city. Hunger Clean-Up is a first step for many students, but also helps to create awareness and increase sensitivity to community issues, and leads to future long-term involvement in Milwaukee. This year marks 30 years of Hunger Clean-Up. So for the anniversary, we look back and forward with student and alumni organizers behind the event and our community partners. Marquette in Milwaukee with President Mike Lovell is moderated by Lauren Burke. Guests: Audra O'Connell: Executive Director of Walker's Point Youth and Family Center, which is our Community Spotlight this year. The money raised from Hunger Clean-Up will be given back to Walker's Point Youth and Family Center Joe Wilson: Executive Director of Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful. Joe and KGMB have been a long term volunteer site placement and partner with Hunger Clean-Up over the years. Mary Thao and Caroline Waltman - Mary and Caroline are our student Program Assistants who have worked on planning Hunger Clean-Up all year.
