They are on a mission to become the de-facto standard for RoboOps: DevOps for Robotics. On this episode of The Shape of Work podcast, we picked Florian's brain on how he thinks about Robots shaping the Future of Work. We discuss with Florian:What's going on in the world of robot operations: public perception of roboticsHow AI will rewire us: would Robotics make humanity better?Self-supervised learning for robotics: will robots be able to learn on their own without human supervision?Where machines could replace humans, and where they can't (yet)How work is going to transform in the futureAt the end of the podcast, Florian leaves us with a great question- ‘Are robots a workforce?'What do you think?Public perception of roboticsAccording to Florian Pestoni, attitudes towards robots vary from one individual to another and among countries. For instance, Japan has a fairly positive attitude towards robots, as evidenced by their investment in robotics research. The negative attitude towards robots stems from fear. People have many misconceptions because of the stories in the science fiction genre. In many of these stories, robots can be seen taking control of the world and wanting to rule over humans.Pestoni attacks these myths by saying that robots in real life do not even look like those shown in the movies. In fact, they may look like a tractor plowing a field or like a cooler that you would take to a picnic, except that it will move on its own. They are just machines trying to make our lives easier.Self-supervised robots — possible or not?Pestoni asserts it will be a very long time before robots will not need to be supervised, and they can never replace humans because there are certain things that robots cannot do. Machines are good at following commands and doing repetitive tasks, but they are not very flexible to adapt to changes. They need to work under a certain parameter.Humans are malleable and can adjust to a variety of situations quickly. Pestoni believes that this intuitive ability is not present in robots and is nearly impossible to develop.Specific tasks like setting explosives for mining operations will be fully automated, but knowing where to mine the explosives will require a human being for at least 500 more years.Follow Florian on LinkedInProduced by: Priya BhattPodcast host: Abhash Kumar

The importance of strategy cannot be understated. You organization is like a ship and its strategy is the rudder. With out the rudder, the ship will sail in circles and ultimately go nowhere. With a steady rudder (strategy) and an experience Captain (you the leader) your ship will get to its destination. Sure there'll be waves along the way, maybe a detour or two, but that is how you operate to achieve success. Brad Chase has had a broad and extensive business career. He has advised leaders of businesses of many different sizes, from startups to Fortune 500 firms, and in many different kinds of markets, from mobile and education to enterprises and consumer services. Some of the companies he has worked with include GE, Telstra, VMware, Mozy (a subsidiary of EMC), Blucora, Sonos, Vizrea, and Crisply. He has also held leadership positions on the boards of many companies and nonprofit organizations, including Expedia, Ooyala, DreamBox, Brooks, Boys and Girls Clubs of King County, and The Nature Conservancy. As a public speaker, Brad has spoken about his particular theory on business strategy, Strategy First, to executives at large and small businesses, to incubators, at conferences, and to students at topflight MBA programs. Before consulting, board work, and speaking, Brad spent 14 years at Microsoft finishing his tenure as a Senior Vice President and Executive Officer managing a team of over 4,000. From April 1999 until mid-2002, Brad led MSN.com's transformation from an unsuccessful internet service to the worldwide traffic and search leader. Bismarck Lepe, Wizeline: Building world class startups from Mexico and Silicon Valley , Ep 141   Bismarck Lepe was part of the first batch of entrepreneurs to leave Google, ready to take the world by storm. And that he did. His first startup was Ooyala, an online video platform company that he built from zero to a $400M exit.    Today, a seasoned entrepreneur, Bismarck is President and CEO at Wizeline, a global product development company that helps its clients solve their biggest challenges with design and technology.    I sat down with Bismarck to talk about his nomadic childhood between the US and Jalisco in Mexico and how he veered from wanting to study medicine to taking an interest in tech startups and eventually founding his own. We also discuss the harsh truths about what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur and how Guadalajara’s tech ecosystem has evolved over the years.  Stories around entrepreneurship in the media Bismarck explains that being the first is always the hardest. When Bismarck launched Ooyala’s operations in Guadalajara in 2010, attracting talent was a challenge. Most engineers wanted to work at more established companies like IBM, Oracle or HP. He explains that there was a shift in that mentality as more startup stories began to be featured in the media.    Learn more about how these stories shaped the local ecosystem and served as inspiration for the next generation of talent in this episode of Crossing Borders. Being penny-wise and pound-foolish When reflecting on his trajectories with Ooyala and Wizeline, Bismarck comments on the importance of knowing when to hire. He explains that there are certain roles in a company that a founder must fill in the early stages of the business. Delegating these too early can slow down the iterative process that finding product-market fit requires.   Find out why outsourcing too early can be harmful to a company in this episode of Crossing Borders. Turning inefficiencies into opportunities As the son of two immigrants who moved from Mexico to the US, it hadn’t crossed Bismarck’s mind to go back in search of opportunities. However, a recruiting trip with his team to Guadalajara quickly changed that. Since then, Bismarck has played a key role in transforming Jalisco’s capital city into one of Mexico’s largest tech hubs.   Listen to this episode of Crossing Borders to learn more about how Guadalajara’s ecosystem has evolved over the years.   Bismarck Lepe is a household name in Guadalajara’s and Silicon Valley’s tech ecosystem due to the various initiatives he has led in the city to foster innovation and tech talent. Through Wizeline, he is transforming the way companies build better products faster.   Outline of this episode: [1:46] - About Wizeline [3:30] - The vision behind the expansion plan [5:10] - Bismarck’s nomadic upbringing [6:38] - On building wealth [8:29] - Entrepreneurship in the media [10:40] - From medicine to startups [13:04] - Leaving Google [14:02] - Lessons learned from starting, building, scaling, and selling a business [16:33] - Advice on dealing with boards [17:54] - The Telstra deal [20:00] - Starting the next company [22:34] - What it takes to be successful [26:25] - Guadalajara’s tech ecosystem  [32:55] - Advice to Bismarck’s younger self [34:25] - Books, blogs, & podcast recommendations [35:20] - What’s next for the companies?   Resources & people mentioned: Bismarck Lepe Wizeline Cerby Ooyala Telstra Ventures Mark Ellis Liftoff Podcasts: Pivot, All-In, Business Wars Books: A Promised Land

“Don't obsess about the fact that you don't always understand what the next step is.” — Jay Fulcher Today, Chad sits down with Jay Fulcher, CEO and chairman of Zenefits which offers cloud based software as a service for companies to better manage their human resources. Having learned the ropes of leadership by being a serial entrepreneur and CEO, he was brought on to lead Zenefits in 2017 after the company had suffered from internal issues and infamously grew too quickly. Jay decided to flip this situation upside down and created a brand new business model and leadership team. Zenefits to this day has become one of the fastest-growing SaaS companies in history and has created a value of 4.5 billion dollars in six years.  “We’ve worked hard at building this very tightly integrated, interoperable platform, a single code base that a customer knows when they do business with Zenefits, all of the applications are going to look and behave the same way,” says Jay. “The employee experience is not going to be good, it's going to be phenomenal.” From being the CEO of Agile software to the CEO of OOyala, Jay has an extensive track record for bringing in great returns and driving growth in the companies he has served. Jay continues to serve as an advisor for other startups making their break into the tech industry.  On this episode of Mission Daily, Jay shares the guiding principle he looks for in a company he chooses to be a part of, the importance of being committed to a growth mindset, and how to build a company that is resilient. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. We own and operate a network of podcasts, and brand story studio designed to accelerate learning.

If you’re a technical person, such as an engineer or designer, then your todo list is probably filled with product launches, bug fixes, interviewing candidates, attending meetings, answering emails, and fighting fires.  The daily grind can leave you wondering if the work that you do is actually worthwhile and makes a big impact. While it’s easy for people to tell us to work smarter, not harder, the bulk of the work still falls on our shoulders, and it often feels like the only way to get it all done is to put in more hours! In today’s episode of FemgineerTV, we’re going to tackle your todo list. We’ll talk about how you can identify activities that will make a big impact for your organization, your team, and yourself, and how to feel good about deprioritizing those that don’t! For expert guidance, I’ve invited Edmond Lau, who is the author of the new book The Effective Engineer. Edmond has worked as an engineer at big companies like Google and growth-stage startups like Ooyala, Quora, and, most recently, Quip. While he onboarded and mentored many new engineers at work, he discovered which habits, techniques, and mindsets set them up for success early on (read: huge impact in less time). Edmond will help us identify common myths about productivity in software development that hold us back from making a big impact. We’ll also share our favorite framework for evaluating how much impact our activities and tasks actually have, using the concept of leverage. Watch the episode and learn: 1. Why it’s important to focus on more than just technical skills 2. Why you shouldn’t drop everything to satisfy a request 3. Why you should dedicate time to activities like automation as well as mentoring and onboarding new employees If you find yourself drowning in tasks and feel like you’re not making the kind of impact you want to make, then you’ll want to watch this episode!
