A behavioural neuroscientist in Saskatoon is uncovering marijuana's effects on fetal brain development. After recently winning a five-year CIHR grant of $960,076 in the spring of 2024, Dr. John Howland's lab at the University of Saskatchewan is expanding its work examining prenatal exposure to cannabis smoke. Howland's teams will assess the way cannabis exposure alters higher brain functions like memory and learning in both rats and mice. Compared to cannabis injections in the past, the professor of Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology at the College of Medicine said exposing rodents to high-potency smoke for up to 15 minutes at a time provides a more realistic picture of marijuana's effects on fetal brain development. Over their lives, Howland will measure changes in cortical limbic circuitruity, for both rodent mothers and their offspring. “The cortex is definitely involved, but we also look at other areas like the hippocampus and the amygdala,” said Howland. “There's pretty good evidence that they are at least subtly affected after gestational exposure to cannabis.” Now, it's a matter of quantifying which circuits cannabis affects in the rodent brain — under circumstances as close to real-life human exposure as Howland's laboratory can create. "It's not simple," said Howland. He notes a wide variety of phenotypes of THC and CBD strains are now available at retailers, each with its own characteristics and potential interactions with neurons. “These receptors are involved in many discrete events during brain development,” he said. "We're hoping to be more controlled and more specific." Howland's team is also searching for ways to stem damage from high-potency strains, while exploring therapies like exercise to counteract cannabis exposure and help future generations grow healthier brains. He said cannabis may be legal -- but that does not make it safe. "It turns out a lot of things that are legal like alcohol and tobacco aren't that safe during pregnancy either," said Howland. "I think more knowledge has to be helpful as women make these decisions for themselves.”

Born and raised in South Africa, she now lives and trains alongside her husband and fellow pro Justin Metzler in Boulder, and she has claimed emotional victories in both locations. Tracing her journey to Colorado, she says: "My cousin got me into road cycling when I was about 17 and then introduced me to a local triathlon group in Johannesburg, the rest was history!" She won her age group at her first 70.3 race in Buffalo City, East London in 2011. Taking up the chance to be a professional in 2012 as she turned 20, she had to make a drastic decision to give herself the best chance of success. Jeanni explains: "I left South Africa with pretty much nothing - but, with the support of my family, I was able to make a life for myself as a professional athlete in the United States." The first couple of years were tough, but her breakthrough moment came late in 2015 when she won IRONMAN 70.3 Austin thanks to a storming run. This was to become a common theme. Jeanni came back a year later to defend her title and then won the inaugural 70.3 Xiamen race that November. She was on her way now, and the wins started to stack up. In 2017 there were four 70.3 titles at Liuzhou, Monterrey, Boulder and Los Cabos, as well as a first top-10 in the 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga. Just for good measure, she grabbed a Challenge Iceland title too. But it was the triumph in her adopted home of Boulder which struck a chord and showed how far she'd come. She had previously been sixth in 2015 and runner-up in 2016. There were also two significant returns to her country of birth in 2018, first to win 70.3 South Africa (at the scene of that 2011 age-group success) and then to place seventh in the 70.3 World Championship at Port Elizabeth. Study Women's Hearts Respond -Differently to Marathon Training Than Mens BRITTANY HAMBLETON SEPTEMBER 29, 2021 Over the last several decades, female athletes have often been left out of sports science research, and the majority of studies have focused primarily on young, healthy males as subjects. It has only been in recent years that researchers have begun to include women in their studies, and, perhaps not surprisingly, some differences are beginning to emerge. A recent study looking at the differences between male and female marathoners found that women's hearts actually respond differently than men's after training for a marathon. The study The paper, entitled “Sex differences in cardiovascular adaptations in recreational marathon runners,” aimed to examine various changes in heart function in male and female marathoners and recreational athletes. The researchers included 52 marathoners (28 females and 24 males) who had completed five to seven marathons over three years and 49 recreationally active adults (25 females and 24 males) as controls. The researchers studied the hearts of each participant, focusing on three main measurements: Left ventricle function: the left ventricle pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. Aortic stiffness: occurs when the elastic fibers within the arterial wall (elastin) begin to fray due to mechanical stress. Ventricular-vascular coupling: the ratio of arterial to left ventricle elastance, a key determinant of cardiac performance. The results After studying the hearts of all the participants, the researchers found that women who have completed multiple marathons do not have reduced left ventricle function or aortic stiffness compared to male marathoners or female recreationally active athletes (both of which are good things). Interestingly, they appear to have better ventricular-vascular coupling compared to the other test groups, which means their hearts are more mechanically efficient after undergoing a marathon training cycle. In other words, women's hearts may respond better to marathon training than men's. The reason for this is unclear, but the researchers believe it could have something to do with the estrogen levels in female athletes. Studies show that estrogen positively modulates cardiac hypertrophy (the heart's tendency to get bigger with training), lowers blood pressure and decreases arterial stiffness, all of which make for a healthier, stronger heart. The researchers conclude the studying by acknowledging that future studies are needed to better understand the influence of sex hormones (in particular, estrogen) on cardiovascular adaptations in marathon runners. This will create a greater understanding of how women adapt to marathon training and may lead to better training protocols for female distance runners in the future. Some “Pro Tips” on Embrocation Products Posted on September 29, 2021 By Val Sanford With cooler weather heading our way (finally) and cyclocross season upon us, now might be the time to try embrocation to help warm those muscles up. Here are some “pro tips” from a top maker–Bluerub. PERFORM BETTER IN COLD WEATHER If you cycle in cold weather, use an embrocation product like bluerub's MUSCLE to increase your comfort while riding. You'll add warmth and increased circulation to your legs, so you can ride farther and go longer. HOW EMBROCATION WORKS Embrocation products blend warming ingredients like capsicum, mint essential oils, clove oil, black pepper essential oil, camphor, and menthol to signal the body to “warm-up” the area where it was applied. When used before cold-weather exercise, it acts as a signal to tell the body to increase circulation to the legs. You'll feel the cold less, and your legs will thank you. 7 PRO-TIPS FOR USING EMBROCATION EMBRO AFTER YOU KIT UP You've got the idea now that embrocation is all about warming! So you'll want to put on your kit first. That will keep all those warming oils away from the parts of your body you definitely don't want to ‘warm-up.” Think capsicum blended into your chamois. Yikes! APPLY ABOUT 30 MINUTES BEFORE YOU RIDE Typically, you'll feel the effects of embrocation about 30 minutes after you apply it. But everyone's body is different, so you'll want to do some experimentation before a big race. This means you'll need to be thinking about your pre-race/pre-ride routine and make sure you've given yourself plenty of time. Remember, though, that embrocation products won't replace your warm-up. You'll still need to stretch, warm-up, and do your pre-ride physical routine. Pro-tip: Apply CHAMOIS first, for the obvious reasons. REALLY WORK IT IN I've heard some say they channel their inner massage therapist to really work the embrocation into the muscles and to thoroughly cover the skin. Roll down your socks, roll up the legs of your bibs, and really spend a few minutes working it in. While legs are the most common spot, you can apply to your lower back, shoulders, neck, and ankles. When you use something that is also a recovery product, like MUSCLE, you'll get a double benefit from the massage in helping relieve any leftover pre-ride stiffness or soreness in your muscles. You can even reapply after your shower to give sore spots some relief. Pro-tip: not all embrocation products are non-staining. So do a spot test before going all-in on your favorite kit. AVOID YOUR EYES, MOUTH, AND OTHER SENSITIVE PARTS You know how much you hate it when you've been cutting peppers and then touch your eye or your lip? Well, that's what it'll feel like if you touch your eyes after applying embro. Wash your hands with warm soap and water, or use a wipe (although this may not get all of it off your hands). You can also use single-use gloves to apply and then toss. It's not an eco-friendly solution, but it can save you on a race when you don't have access to warm, soapy water. Pro-tip: Fill your bottles, pack your phone, snacks, and other essentials before applying embrocation, just to be on the safe side. KEEP YOUR LEGS WARM Embrocation creams don't actually add any extreme cold-weather protection to your legs. So if you're riding in chilly weather – especially if there's a breeze — you'll need to protect your legs from the elements. Try using knee warmers or even thermal tights (with our without embrocation). Be mindful of how cold it is and be aware of how it's affecting you. Pro-tip: Use an embrocation even when the weather isn't cold. It is a great transition solution between cool weather when tights are too much, yet you want a little extra warmth before getting out for a ride. SHAVE YOUR LEGS Embrocation products come in a variety of forms: oils, balms, salves, creams. bluerub's MUSCLE's is a lightweight cream that goes on smoothly. If your legs are hairy, it can get caught in the hair and not be thoroughly or evenly applied. The embrocation will wash off more fully and easily on smooth skin. Plus, you know you look great with shaved legs! (Try SHAVE for smooth, soft skin.) Pro-tip: Don't apply on just-shaved legs. Give your pores a little breathing room before using warming oils like those in an embrocation product. WASH BEFORE YOU SHOWER I love settling into a hot, steamy bath after being outside in the cold, wet weather. But hot water can reactivate the essential oils and give you the surprise of your life! Okay, not the surprise of your life, but you could definitely feel like jumping out of the water! Use warm, soapy water to remove the embrocation before getting into a hot shower or bath. No-rise wipes can help but may not get all the oils off, so test it to be sure. Pro-tip: Don't use the same washcloth to wash your face. Some people like using a loofah to help remove the embrocation. Just like your washcloth, keep it 'embrocation only' to avoid any accidental application to your face or nether parts. So those are our pro-tips for using embrocation cream during cold weather rides. Video Of The Week: Ironman Chattanooga 2021 Highlights Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week. Mark is also a board member for The European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA).Together, we discuss the uses and applications of industrial hemp including its use in home insulation, as a bioplastic, and as a building material.About MarkMark is the CEO of HempFlax, Europe's largest independent hemp grower and processor. Mark has been at HempFlax since 2008 and was appointed CEO in 2016. HempFlax has operations across Europe, with over 2,400 hectares of hemp expected to be harvested in 2020.Raised in a farming family, Mark holds bachelor's degrees in agribusiness and crop production from Het Van Hall Instituut and a Master of Science degree in management from Nyenrode University. From 2016 to 2019, Mark served as president of the European Industrial Hemp Association, Europe's foremost coalition of the industrial hemp-processing industry. He continues to sit on its board of directors today.Episode SummaryHempFlax was founded in 1993 by Ben Dronkers with the aim of restoring the age-old crop to its former glory and reviving the industrial hemp industry. In the process, HempFlax has grown from 140 hectares of industrial hemp fibre in 1994 to 2500 hectares in 2017, in 2020 they expect to cultivate 3500 hectares. Their cultivation takes place in the Netherlands, Germany and Romania with their factories located in Oude Pekela, Netherlands and Alba Iulia, Romania.HempFlax are currently providing industrial hemp for use in car production to BMW, Mercedes, Bugatti, Jaguar and Bentley.Mark's father was a hemp farmer so he grew up around the crop. Mark strengthened this knowledge through interning at the company in 2000. It was in 2007 when Ben asked Mark to rejoin the team.Mark is a board member for EIHA, who are lobbying in Brussels for the recognition of Hemp amongst other activities. In The Netherlands, industrial hemp is prohibited unless it is grown for fibre and seeds, leaves and flowers are not allowed to be harvested. Across the border in Germany, this is allowed.New applications for industrial hemp are constantly being developed, it has an incredible amount of uses.It can be used as a construction material for houses, insulation, car parts, scooters, furniture and reusable cups.It can also be used as animal bedding or litter which is completely safe for animals and humans due to its lack of additives and minimal processing. The hemp plant thrives in almost any climate, it grows very quickly with little maintenance. No chemicals are required to grow it as it is resistant to pests and diseases. It consumes little water per kilo of fibre, much less than cotton, whose cultivation can be extremely harmful to the environment.Hemp also stores carbon dioxide during its growth, which is great for balancing the C02 levels in the environment.40% of the worldwide carbon dioxide emission is caused by construction and heating and cooling buildings. Traditional Fibreglass insulation is difficult to work with, it can be harmful to the skin and even inhaled. Hemp fibre on the other hand is non toxic and uses 10x less energy in its production than Fibreglass.HempFlax are also working within Bioplastics, by combining

How easy is it to protect your ideas in the cannabis industry? This week we are joined by Jane Hollywood (Senior Patent Attorney) and Robert Stephen (Partner) from CMS, International Law Firm. Listen in as we explore intellectual property in the cannabis space, delving into what intellectual property actually is, which types of protection are available, and how to go about protecting your ideas.Episode SummaryIntellectual property is ‘something you create with your mind', this could be a story, an artistic work, a poem, a symbol etc. There are a number of different types including registered and unregistered rights, these differ with the type of material you have created. One of the main rights are patents which are registered rights intended to protect technical innovations or new solutions to a technical problem.Plant variety rights are able to protected for new and innovative varieties. Trademarks are also available for products or services which are attributed to a particular seller or retailer. Design rights and trade secrets are also protected. Registered property means you have to make an application with the relevant independent body. Registrations are only given if you meet certain criteria.Copyright is an unregistered right, and is automatically given when you create certain works.Intellectual property rights tend to be national rights, patents are given within certain geographical areas such as Great Britain or Germany. A patent gives the right to exclude, not practice. 18 months after you file a patent application, it is published.Within the cannabis industry, things like breeding and strains are kept as trade secrets. In terms of medical cannabis, products which have specific mentionable and innovative qualities such as a sustained release are able to be patented. It is difficult to patent a naturally occurring plant. Many farmers see patenting certain plants too strict as it makes it difficult to breed other varieties in the future. In the USA, plant patents are available with breeders exemptions. Plant variety rights only protect particular varieties whereas patents provide broader protection. Genetic sequences are not patentable unless there is a utility for it. The IP within the cannabis industry is comparable to the agriculture industry, there are no new developments within the industry regarding things that are ‘patent-able'.It is difficult to gain a trademark across the whole of the US for cannabis-related products. Jane and Rob suggest that if you are a business in the Cannabis space the best way to protect yourself is to first audit your services and/or products, identifying what you are doing differently. From there you need to work out what you have which is protectable and what other people within the niche are doing. There is a lot to be learned from competitors. What does the FSA's announcement about CBD mean for the industry in the UK?This week we are joined by Dr Parveen Bhatharah and Dr Sarah Gaunt from The Association For The Cannabinoid Industry where they occupy the roles of Regulatory Lead and Global Regulatory Services Partner. Join us as we discuss the most recent updates to the Novel Foods Regulations by The Food Standards Agency. We explore what the new regulations mean for businesses who are currently operating within the CBD industry and for those who plan to in the future.Episode SummaryNovel Food Regulations are a European regulations which govern what can and can't be sold as a food product. Before the food can be legally marketed in the EU, novel foods are required to have a pre-market safety assessment and authorisation under the Novel Foods Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 2015/2283)The regulation applies to any food and food ingredient that hadn't been used in the EU for human consumption to a significant degree before May 1997. The food must also be either: food ingredients with a new or intentionally modified primary molecular structureCBD was introduced to the Novel Food Regulations only last year, meaning products which were on the market previous to the introduction did not necessarily undergo necessary safety assessments. On 13th February 2020, the FSA updated its rules around the retail of CBD products, making it clear that companies who already have products on the market will need to file a retrospective application by March 31st 2021 otherwise their products will be taken off the market.New products must go through the standard Novel Foods application, authorisation and approval, the same as any other foods on the market.Products which ‘break the rules' will have to deal with the Trading Standards Association, who have the power to remove products from the market. The Novel Foods Regulations apply to anyone who sells CBD products, regardless of if they are bought from a wholesaler, produced in-house, or white labelled. The person at the end of the supply chain who puts the product on the shelves (the seller) is ultimately responsible for making sure their products are safe.To file an application, you need to submit a dossier to The European Commission including data about the safety of your products, manufacturing practices and ingredients. Once your product is validated by the European Commission, it is passed on to the Food Standards Agency who conduct a risk assessment. The burden of responsibility falls mostly on the brands themselves who are supplying the manufactured goods and it is their responsibility to make sure their supply chains are transparent and following good manufacturing practice.Key safety studies must be carried out on raw ingredients, is it a brand responsibility to make sure that their suppliers are safe.Other examples of novel foods include Chia Seeds, which are a recent health food but were not historically in our diet or sold commercially. There are plans to launch a kitemark for CBD indicating quality and cannabinoid safety.ResourcesJoin The ACI on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/association-for-the-cannabinoid-industryAssociation For The Cannabinoid Industry Website: https://www.theaci.co.uk/Novel Foods Regulations Guide to CBD:https://www.food.gov.uk/business-guidance/cannabidiol-cbd

How easy is it to get a medical cannabis prescription in the UK?We're joined this week by Dr. Leon Barron, General Practitioner with a strong interest in medical cannabis, and founder of the Primary Care Cannabis Network - a platform for dialogue, debate and education to help further the conversation and strengthen the voice of UK GPs within medical cannabis. In this episode, we explore how medical cannabis could potentially be used in Primary Care within the NHS, the barriers faced when accessing medical cannabis, and the safety of cannabinoids for pain management.About Dr Leon BarronDr Barron is a GP based in London, UK. His interests within General Practice include mental health and managing complex symptoms that often combine physical, psychological and social components. A holistic approach to his clinical practice has led to an interest in medical cannabis as an alternative therapy for patients who have not found conventional therapies to be effective.Dr Barron is an executive committee member of The Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society which provides high quality, balanced education and expert support to inform clinicians about the current state of evidence with regard to the efficacy of cannabis and its side effects. He is also the founder of The Primary Care Cannabis Network which offers a platform for GPs with an interest in medical cannabis. He continues to undertake regular NHS work and is a visiting tutor for undergraduate medicine at University College LondonEpisode SummaryDr Barron became interested in Medical Cannabis two years ago after hearing about cases in the media. At the same time, his relative in Israel was responding well to Medical Cannabis as a treatment which further sparked his interest.Leon explored the topic further by researching and finding scientific journals on PubMed where he came across the work of the early cannabis scientists. He identified ways in which medical cannabis could change clinical practice within the UK and then went on to meet a number of cannabis experts and specialists within the UK such as Mike Barnes who fuelled his interest. As of November 1st 2018, cannabis based drugs for medical use was made legal within the UK as prescribed by specialist doctors, by prescription only. GP's are not able to issue prescriptions.Leon encounters 2-3 patients per week in his general practice who ask about medical cannabis. He has also noticed a great interest from patients in CBD products. In the UK, the general view of practitioners is that a patient should have tried conventional therapies before being offered a cannabis based medication. For somebody who is experiencing pain, the first referral a patient would get (on the NHS) would be to a pain specialist, who are unlikely to prescribe cannabis based medication due to lack of knowledge. Another option is being seen privately, where the patient will have to fund the cost of the medication themselves, making this a dead end option for many. Another option would be to enrol in the 2021 trial which is being run by Drug Science. The aim is to enrol 20,000 patients by the end of 2021 and aims to create a body of evidence for the tolerability and effectiveness of medical cannabis. Medical cannabis in the UK is unlicensed, which some doctors see as a barrier to prescribing it. With this being said, unlicensed medicines are used across the NHS in many instances where there is no suitably licensed medicine which will meet the needs of the patients.Dr. Barron is a committee member for the UK Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society, an independent community of medical cannabis pioneers - the first prescribers of this

What actually is pain and can cannabis help? We're back this week with an extended episode on the topic of cannabis and pain. This week we're joined by Dr. Matt Brown, an award-winning pain consultant based in London, UK. Dr. Brown takes a strong interest in the use of cannabis for the treatment of chronic pain and has recently published a piece of research into using cannabinoids for cancer pain treatment.Listen in as we discover exactly what pain is, how cannabis may be able to help us cope with it, and the future for medical cannabis in the UK.____________________________________About Dr. Matt BrownMatt Brown is a consultant and clinician scientist in pain medicine based in London. He trained at King's College London, winning the War Memorial and Wolfson Foundation Scholarships and graduating with distinction. His clinical training in pain medicine was conducted at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Matt fulfilled his long-term interest in clinical research by gaining a National Institute for Health Research's Academic Clinical Fellowship. This enabled him to conduct novel, award-winning research into pain at both Imperial College and King's College, London. Subsequently Matt completed a Doctorate in Medicine at the Institute of Cancer Research (becoming the first anaesthetist in the Institute's history to do so and winning the Chairman's Prize at graduation).Matt has published and lectured widely on the subject of pain. His research interests include cannabis medical products in pain, pain in cancer survivors, persistent post-surgical pain and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN).________________________________________________Episode SummaryAs a consultant and researcher in pain medicine, Dr. Brown's clinical work sees him encountering many self-medicating patients who have turned cannabis for pain management. Dr. Brown sees is at the responsibility of a doctor to ensure that patient safety is safeguarded and protected, which is why he considers many of the approaches taken by the royal colleges very sensible. He is an advocate for more research into the side effects of cannabis as it is still largely misunderstood. As defined by The International Association For The Study of Pain - pain is an ‘unpleasant sensory or emotional experience associated with potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage'Pain also encompasses emotional distress which can in turn impact mood and mental healthDr. Brown looks at pain through a biopsychosocial model which is the idea that having pain impacts your social life and your psychological wellbeing too. Pain is a far more complex than a simple sensory process. Early pain research based on simple physiological research but the biopsychosocial model was adopted in the 60's and 70's. It is estimated that around 20-40% of people in the UK have suffered from chronic pain at some point in their lives. This has a huge impact on our economy when you think about the number of days work lost from pain. The burden of pain within our society will increase with our ageing population and an increased rate of cancer survivors. The number of pain specialists in the UK is very small.Pain can affect us all very differently due to differentiating levels of psychological robustness.Med Tech such as wearable devices, AI and smartphones can disrupt the way in which medicine is practised as it gives you the ability to monitor people more closely.A problem with pain research is quantifying data - do you measure by a numerical rating scale? The measure of pain is largely anecdotal.
There was so much to chat about on this week's episode, that we've decided to break into a two-parter. We're lucky to be joined by Gregor Zorn, a medical cannabis educator and co-founder of the European Cannabinoid Therapy Association. Together, in Part 1, we investigate the challenges of trying to fit medical cannabis into the standard western medical system, explore the endocannabinoid system and how it interacts with the rest of the body, and look into the ways in which this remarkable plant can be integrated into western healthcare. If you'd like to find out more about Gregor, and for resources mentioned within the episode, click through to our show notes here: https://www.cannabis-conversation.com/blogs/episode31shownotes⠀⠀Episode SummaryGregor studied Biology at the Biotechnical University of Ljubljana and specialised in nutrition, as a result of this, he became interested in holistic approaches to health and in turn, discovered cannabis and its therapeutic potential. Gregor attended a symposium in Ljubljana which was attended by numerous doctors from across the world who spoke about using cannabinoids in order to treat human conditions. He found the conference incredibly interesting and was inspired to start reading medical journals around the subject. Throughout his research, he realised he was becoming more concerned with its therapeutic uses and started a mission to learn as much as possible around the subject. Once he had become an expert in the subject, he began teaching doctors and patients. Gregor is the co-founder of the European Cannabinoid Therapy Association, a medical cannabis educator for medical professionals, students, and patients.Western medicine relies heavily on the use of synthetic pharmaceutical drugs and surgery alongside other medical procedures. It is focused mainly on treating the symptoms of a disease rather than looking for the root itself. For example, if you have a headache you may take some paracetamol to stop the pain rather than treating the problem which caused the headache (a headache is a symptom, not a cause).A good treatment outcome comes from taking care of the cause of the symptoms, not the symptoms themselves. Many pharmaceutical drugs have side effects, which are in turn treated by more drugs which can present more symptoms. The cycle goes on and on. Pharmaceutical drugs may also have a reduced efficacy over time which means they are less effective the more you use them.Opioids are a good example of this, over time you have to increase the dose to achieve the same effects. This is due to their mechanism of action within the body - over time you become tolerant of them and need more to give you the same effect. Cannabinoid receptors are not found in the areas of the body which control your breathing, with no receptors, they cannot bind. This can be linked to the fact that you cannot overdose on cannabis or THC. Opioids have receptors in these areas, which allows somebody to be able to overdose. Different types of cannabis can be grown for different reasons, for example those with tall strong stems are grown for their fibres, those with lots of seeds are grown to make oils, and those with a high number of cannabinoids are grown for therapeutic effects.Trichomes store cannabinoids, terpenes (aromatic smells of cannabis) and terpenoids, which are found on the surface of the plant. The cannabis plant is different to other plants in the way that it produces its active ingredients on its surface unlike other plants who store their active ingredients inside the leaves, stems or flowers. Each of us have an endocannabinoid system, just like we have an immune system. This system generally speaking provides balance o
www.EvaWorldwide.com Whole Plant Hemp Phytocannabinoid Therapy https://www.learntruehealth.com/phytocannabinoid Phytocannabinoid therapy can be significantly helpful if you’re looking into alternative ways of healing. I’m sure most of you have heard the benefits of hemp to address health issues. But surprisingly, whole plant hemp phytocannabinoid therapy can also heal pets. My guest Nicole Davidsohn has an exciting story to tell regarding phytocannabinoid therapy as well as educate us on the other healing benefits of this wonderful hemp herb. Series Of Accidents The Eva company story began in spring 2014 with a series of accidents. Eva founder Dane Kemp was in a near-death experience because of a car accident but still came to work. He did, however, suffer from post-concussion syndrome. His partner and co-founder Nicole Davidsohn, on the other hand, was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Doctors initially thought it was a stomach flu. Even with a flu protocol it never stopped. Nicole Davidsohn was misdiagnosed. It was only after a colonoscopy that she discovered she had ulcerative colitis. “The biggest thing I noticed with ulcerative colitis was fatigue. The way that it hurt my life was that I just wanted to sleep all day and I had no appetite,” shares Nicole Davidsohn. Before Nicole Davidsohn was diagnosed, she was a raw vegan. After her diagnosis, Nicole Davidsohn was prohibited by her doctor to eat raw foods and vegetables. So, she ate boiled chicken and sweet potatoes to get back on track. A few months later, Nicole Davidsohn fell on a flight of stairs. She ended up with misplaced ribs and extreme pain throughout her nervous system. Nicole Davidsohn still did a high-intensity workout class but felt worse after. Hence, she was rushed to the E.R., stopped going to work and eventually went into depression spiraled by her injuries. Health Struggle Weeks went by, and Nicole Davidsohn tried the medication the doctors gave her. The medicines were really strong which made Nicole Davidsohn sick. She slept a lot, avoided the sun and noise. Dane Kemp convinced her to move into their home in Baltimore so his mom could help take care of her, but Nicole Davidsohn’s condition didn’t improve. One night, Dane Kemp suggested to Nicole Davidsohn that they go to Oaksterdam University in California. He initially wanted to take their cannabis seminar on the history of growing. It was timely because, in 2015, the industry was beginning to open up. Availability Nicole Davidsohn says cannabis helped Dane Kemp in the past with attention issues. But on the East Coast, it’s not easy to get. Even if Nicole Davidsohn had a medical card for her ulcerative colitis, it limited her to two grams per day of the only strain they had which was blue dream. Blue Dream is a strain to get you thinking, be creative and invigorate your mind. “You can’t just smoke any cannabis and get relief from it because you have to have the correct ratio of cannabinoids and terpenes to help you with your specific ailment. In D.C., the dispensary you go to is dependent on your address,” Nicole Davidsohn said. Seeing An Opportunity Because of this, Dane Kemp saw an opportunity and also saw a way to help people. Taking a seminar at Oaksterdam University, the couple learned so much about cannabis, cannabinoids, growing it, its history, starting a business, and learning about the industry. Nicole Davidsohn also called up an old friend in California who gave her a bag of medical cannabis goodies like edibles, vapes, and joints including a type of caramel popcorn which contained THC. It was the first time she used cannabis as real medicine. Nicole Davidsohn ate the popcorn at night and slept well. It did have Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC in it, but she wasn’t high when she went to class. Instead, she just used it after class. The THC popcorn ultimately made Nicole Davidsohn feel better. Going back home to the East Coast, the couple did some preparations to move back to the West Coast to start a new life and begin healing holistically. Cannabis Juice When Nicole Davidsohn was in California, she had been studying the work of Dr. William Courtney who was famous for cannabis juice. She eventually wanted to grow her own vegan cannabis plant and juice it. “So, I bought an aero garden, planted some seeds and started growing cannabis like a normal herb on the counter. When it was big enough, I stuck it in my juicer with some turmeric and ginger. It tasted great,” said Nicole Davidsohn. Cannabis has acidic cannabinoids in its raw form. THC is THC-A, so it has a carbon molecule on it. Nicole Davidsohn says that for it to become psychoactive, or to make you feel high, you need to heat it to 220 degrees Fahrenheit for a certain amount of time. “When you juice it, just like you would go outside and take a fresh apple off a tree, chop it up and put in your juicer. I would take the bud off the plant and put in the juicer,” Nicole Davidsohn said. “It extracts all the cannabinoids, terpenes and chlorophyll which is super healthy for you. You won’t get stoned.” Effects of Juicing First thing Nicole Davidsohn felt was that her eyes widened, and her brain cleared up. It gave her four to six hours of energy. One reason is that raw cannabis is full of nutrients. It’s also a complete protein with all the essential amino acids. It has a ton of vitamins and minerals, too. “The reason why I started juicing was to help my brain recover, but it was also to help get my colitis back in remission,” revealed Nicole Davidsohn. “I think because I needed the nutrients, it started to slow my digestion and bring my body back to homeostasis instead of an inflamed state. It didn’t heal my post-concussion syndrome. I went to speech therapy for that.” She adds, “Juicing is not the easiest thing in the world. I juice three times a week. But once I made a container of it, it last three days unless you vacuum seal it then it will last seven days. I wasn’t consistent at first. For the first year, I was juicing every month and taking other cannabinoids as well.” Birth Of Eva Starting the company Eva, they began as the first 100% comprehensively lab-tested dispensary delivery in Sonoma County. Both Dane Kemp and Nicole Davidsohn got familiar with the certificate of analysis on everything. Eventually, Eva was the only dispensary in California in 2015 to have their menu comprehensively third-party lab-tested. “The juice inspired the capsules that we have. I made one called Better Brain which has Bacopa, Matcha and the whole hemp plant flower in it. The speech therapy plus the juice and Better Brain capsules helped my brain to heal,” revealed Nicole Davidsohn. Mary The Dog Mary was Nicole Davidsohn’s a Pit/Dalmatian mix who received a terminal lymphoma diagnosis in October 2016. She was given three months to live with or without chemotherapy. Nicole Davidsohn was making the juice at the time and helping people with assorted health ailments. So, she thought of giving Mary the juice by incorporating it in her food. It was not long before Mary went from being fatigued to energized. “We also bought some CBD oils and mixed it with the whole plant. They were raw oils. But Mary did not respond the same way compared to when she was given the juice,” recalled Nicole Davidsohn. “I think because the oil is fat-soluble, and it takes a lot longer to digest and be absorbed.” Nicole Davidsohn continued to give Mary the juice with turmeric and ginger. The dog continued to stay energized and didn’t get sick. After Eva company developed Better Pet Relief for Mary’s cancer and arthritis, Mary’s cancer has gone into remission. The capsules also help manage Mary’s arthritis. Aside from this, Nicole Davidsohn also adds a little bit of black pepper extract into Mary’s diet to help in the absorption. Compatibility With Hemp Nicole Davidsohn explains that we have an endocannabinoid system. Endo means inside. We already have receptors and cannabinoids in our body. And cannabinoids are also found in the plant cannabis. But when we’re stressed out, we make fewer cannabinoids naturally. “When we take in external cannabinoids from hemp or cannabis, it’s like getting a multivitamin. So, it’s fulfilling that deficiency. I like to think of it as vitamins,” said Nicole Davidsohn. “When I think of the endocannabinoid system, I think like it’s just another set of receptors for a vitamin that we aren’t taking any more.” She adds, “I believe we have an epidemic of what I call endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome. When people are deficient in making their natural cannabinoids, they feel so much better when they ingest CBD oil, Eva CBD capsules or edibles.” Dementia First of all, Nicole Davidsohn says their capsules can’t cure, treat or manage any disease. For dementia, in particular, she suggests their product, Better Brain. Nicole Davidsohn also revealed that the element Bacopa was used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years for dementia and there are studies behind it. But cannabis can also do that. All of Eva’s capsules contain whole flowers, so everything is raw. And it is made of organic hemp flowers. It aims to clear the brain and give you that phytocannabinoid nutrient in case you’re deficient in it which could also be causing memory loss. Nicole Davidsohn again assures everyone that the capsules will not get you stoned. Dosage According to Nicole Davidsohn, the capsules are formulated to last four hours. If you’re looking to last an entire day of super brain power, Nicole Davidsohn recommends taking one capsule when you wake up and another one in the afternoon. “The formulas are based on research I did to find the best dose of Bacopa, cannabinoids, and Matcha green tea,” Nicole Davidsohn said. “Bacopa is also an adaptogenic stress reliever. People use it for stress relief, and they also use it for pain relief.” Panic Attacks For panic attacks, Nicole Davidsohn highly suggests their Better Mood product. It contains Valerian Root, Lemon Balm, and Hemp. A little dose of Valerian Root helps you calm down. It’s used for insomnia, anxiety and increase GABA receptors. Nicole Davidsohn says Lemon Balm is safe even for kids. Many kids take Lemon Balm for anxiety and focus. Pain Medication Addiction Nicole Davidsohn says their formula may help someone with a pain medication addiction by employing phytocannabinoid therapy. As a person tapers off the hard pain drugs, Nicole Davidsohn suggests taking Better Relief Capsules. However, it is advisable to work with a doctor to help taper off the medications and increase the intake of raw cannabinoids with turmeric and ginger. “Many studies have shown how CBD and whole plant hemp can reduce the side effects of withdrawal by nourishing the endocannabinoid system,” said Nicole Davidsohn. “If we’re able to supplement the body with phytocannabinoids, it would help people get off pain medications more quickly.” Eva’s products are also safe for children because it is non-psychoactive. Nicole Davidsohn says all their capsules are whole herbs, whole plants, and raw vegan. Better Brain and Better Mood Capsules can help children focus better and address their emotional issues like anxiety. Nicole Davidsohn also says that one of the big things that children can benefit from phytocannabinoid therapy is to help them reduce toxin overload. Full Spectrum Full Spectrum would be including all of the cannabinoids and the naturally present terpenes in the plant. Nicole Davidsohn says you can get a Full Spectrum extract which would be using the whole plant. “Take a whole hemp flower, put it in some olive oil, shut it and put it in a dark place. Shake it once every day. Leave it in the dark cupboard for two weeks,” advises Nicole Davidsohn. “Then strain the oil out from the flower, and now you have a Full Spectrum Tincture.” Full Spectrum means it contains all of the cannabinoids and all of the terpenes that are naturally present in the plant. Nicole Davidsohn reveals that their company uses therapeutic hemp, specifically grown to be phytocannabinoid-rich, organic and does not have any contaminants in it. Eva Products There have been many success stories of people who have benefitted from cannabis juice and Eva’s products. Other worthy products to check out from the Eva website is Better Sleep and Better Pet Relief. As mentioned previously, Better Pet Relief helped Nicole Davidsohn’s dog get on the road to recovery.
