On the weekend that this podcast is released, Saudi Arabia will be playing two international football matches at Newcastle United's St James Park, against Costa Rica and South Korea - but the results won't really matter, and not just because the games are friendlies. Critics say that whatever the final scores, the despotic regime of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman (MBS) will already have won, simply by virtue of being allowed to host such prestigious games at a venerated English football stadium. The Saudi Public Investment Fund bought Newcastle in 2021, which many observers regarded as a classic case of "sportswashing"; a regime notorious for human rights abuses seeking to create a more positive image for itself. The staging of these friendlies is being seen as another step towards the 'normalisation' of a state renowned for its human rights abuses. Ahead of the Saudi friendlies, Adrian Goldberg travelled to St James Park to meet John Hird, a lifelong Newcastle United fan and founder of NUFC Against Sportswashing, and Lina Al Hathloul, from Saudi human rights organisation ALQST. Produced in Birmingham by Adrian Goldberg and Harvey White. Funded by subscriptions to the Byline Times. Made by We Bring Audio for Byline Times.

Welcome to the Episode Notes for the 17th installment of the Monkey See Monkey Review Podcast. It's a bit of reviewfest this time out, if that floats your boat. We've seen lots of good-to-great films, so Scott, Christopher, Kev and Craig wanted to spend a bit of time digging into them a bit. What can you expect? Well, step this way... Do you like dogs? Well, for two cracking family adventures, we have a very good Boy in Love and Monsters, and The Mitchells and The Machines, which features a dog? A pig? A loaf of bread? There's lots more to talk about with them too. But that's not all: you want Oscar winners? Great! We talk the nomad lifestyle and the colossus that is Frances McDormand in Nomadland. You want sci-fi? Sure thing, how about the peerless Toni Colette in Stowaway? A brief detour through some tough body horror, maybe? Then we have you covered with Possessor Uncut. And to finish, we present you with some quality British indie drama in the shape of the wonderful Wilderness. Add a garnish of our usual tangental chats and a quick Oscars recap and you're about there. Not forgetting our regular Pitch Battle and additions to our Tracks of the Trade playlist. Oh and here are our social media links for good measure: Tracks of the Trade - https://open.spotify.com/user/avkv8q6mz8ivmd3q225hhfct5/playlist/30KEiO4zMdUdMowfPMBNDU?si=icjBuKJORfix1HBnu1WkYA Twitter - https://twitter.com/msmrpod Instagram - monkeyseemonkeyreview Email - msmrpod@gmail.com Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/groups/288944731999066/?ref=shareLetterboxd -Kev - https://boxd.it/1ov9r Scott - https://boxd.it/1qGaJ

Add in a diversion through Jurassic Park and an Oscars-themed Tracks of the Trade, and you've got yourself a jam packed pod to please your ears. We promise we won't thank our agents or accidentally out a teacher if you leave us a positive review. Do you have suggestions for future Pitch Battles or Tracks of the Trade? Get in touch below. With Antonia Quirke Les Miserables is not another adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel, but an award-winning, autobiographical thriller set in a deprived estate in the Parisian suburbs. Ladj Ly's film made such an impact with French audiences that President Francois Macron asked to watch it. He was so shaken by what he saw on screen that he ordered his ministers to start finding solutions to the poor housing conditions in the French capital. In a new round of Pitch Battle, critic Ryan Gilbey pitches a remake of Withnail And I, which brings Uncle Monty centre stage. Who else would I have had on my first show other than Deke Sharon? You name it in acappella and he’s done it, or probably created it, or made it better than it was. When you hear Deke’s name, you often hear “the father of contemporary acappella” following it. Arranger, Producer, Coach, Writer… Deke’s acappella pedigree is well known. the Bubs, CASA, The House Jacks, Straight No Chaser, Committed, Nota, Street Corner Symphony, The Sing Off, Pitch Perfect 1, 2, and 3, Pitch Slapped, In Transit, and the upcoming Pitch Battle on the BBC. Deke is rarely at home and I caught him there and we talked about In Transit, some of its pioneering elements, and what it was like to record a Broadway soundtrack. We cover Pitch Perfect 3, get a sneak peak at Pitch Battle, and also talk at length about acappella finally getting a seat at the grown ups table in the music industry.
