From a sunken Tudor flagship brought back to life by the wonders of osteoarchaeology, to the tales of bravery and endurance surrounding the tragic fate of WW2's SS Gairsoppa, shipwrecks can reveal far more about human history than you might initially expect. Drawing on his experience as a diver and maritime archaeologist, David Gibbins speaks to Emily Briffett about the riches that lie beneath the waves, which can act as a porthole to the past. On a misty night in October 1947, the luxury liner Durban Castle sailed smoothly across the dark waves of the Atlantic. Aboard was Gay Gibson, a young actress with dreams of stardom, and James Camb, a steward with a chequered past. When Gibson mysteriously vanished, and her lifeless body was allegedly pushed through the ship's porthole, a dark tale of desire, deceit, and death unfolded in a mystery that would captivate the world. What can we learn from imprints in the earth about the ancient presences that left them behind? Acclaimed author Anna Badkhen traces markers left in the earth from the near and distant past, from the buffalo wallows of North America to the treasure-hiding game sekretiki she played as a child, from the histories held in whale earwax to the map of our human becoming in the Bouri Peninsula of modern-day Ethiopia. Reading each of these imprints as a kind of porthole—a window into memory, with all the retellings and reinterpretations characteristic of our messy, continual search for meaning—Anna wonders what lineage of impressions we might leave for the future. For some ungodly reason, they spend the first 20 minutes talking about Matt's vacation. Did the boys hype it up too much last week? Were you disappointed? Was there a porthole? We jump into the crazy week in the WWE, Vince McMahon is back, is the company for sale? Stephanie McMahon resigns. We have no clue what any of this means & we spend some time speculating about the future of the WWE, and what it means for the product. We talk some Royal Rumble and the ad that Matt saw during Monday Night Football with Cody advertised. Will Big E make a return? We discuss the Ruby Soho match, the powerbomb and Jungle Hook. Who liked it, who didn't & much more We are then joined by the Wild Rhino, Clark Connors. We cover a variety of topics, from his return against Suzuki, being a part of the Historic Crossover show, and Wild Hips in the Super Junior Tournament. Clark shares drunk lost cell phone stories, thoughts on the Karl Fredericks news and much more. It's a really fun talk, and worth checking out. Back from a quick break and it's time for Can You Beat That......Matt defends the title against The Captain. Is Matt's reign over, or did the Captain rock the boat? We hit on a few notes on AEW Dynamite, Matt is outraged that NXT has a tag team called the Rockers, and Tony no longer is watching MLW or NWA, its all about WOW now. It's a must listen to show, remember to rate, review and subscribe. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-shining-wizards/support

Leigh is finally back in the studio with us in this episode. It's rain forest weather time in the bluegrass and that leads to a conversation about showering. We talk Belmont and Baffert along with Coach K retirement. We open up the Duly Noted Nook for some Penguins front office and Carrie throws her name into the ring to be the next Tottenham manager. Lots of WCWS talk in this one as Leigh drops a lot of softball knowledge. Some decoration for your chin in News of the Weird and boozy Father's Day Cards, mustard watermelon, baseball juice and the Muntsers round out this episode's Take It or Leave It.

It looks like a puzzle of a piece from an estate of years gone by, that would have you guessing as to what on earth it was used for! In 1947 actress Gay Gibson disappeared from her cabin on an ocean liner off the coast of West Africa. The deck steward, James Camb, admitted to pushing her body out a porthole, but insisted she had died of natural causes and not in a sexual assault. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll review the curious case of the porthole murder, which is still raising doubts today. On the 10th October 1947, the ship the Durban Castle was travelling from Capetown in South Africa to Southampton in the UK. 21 year old actress Eileen Gibson or Gay as was her stage name was travelling alone in first class cabin number 126. In the early hours of the morning the lights outside her cabin were lit which alerted the nightwatchman Fred Steer. The next morning the passengers and staff on the ship were greeted with a strange mystery; Gay Gibson was nowhere to be found. Important information provided by: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-43478495https://www.cruiseshipdeaths.com/1947/10/18/actress-eileen-gay-gibson-cruise-ship-murder-on-durban-castle/https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6j88dghttps://www.findmypast.co.uk/Music by: www.dl-sounds.comFollow us on social media:Twitter- @theunseenpodFacebook- The Unseen Podcast

Installing port lights and portholes with Luis Martins Luis wrote me "Last time we talked you showed some interest in how I installed the new port lights and portholes in my boat without any screws or bolts. What do you say if we record a podcast on that subject?" Great idea and here it is! This is how it turned out and here are the products he used in the process:   3M 4991 VHB Acrylic Foam Tape 12mm x 16.5m x 2.3mm https://amzn.to/2OHfbMU https://amzn.to/2QGUG4d Sika® Aktivator-205 https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=3508 Sika® Primer-209N https://amzn.to/2ODT2Px Sikaflex 295 UV Black 10.3 oz. Cartridge Adhesive / Sealant Sika The 4 products above were mentioned in the podcast with Luis Martins on installing Portlights and Portholes Here are some Recommended Books     Lining up the portholes Luis wrote... "Considering the quality of today's adhesives compared to 20 years ago. I would not thru-bolt acrylic port lights as the holes will weaken the port light and create stress points that may lead to stress cracks. You need to drill oversized holes to accommodate for expansion of the acrylic with temperature changes and then deal with sealing those oversized holes. In my opinion, bolting the port lights brings more problems that need to be addressed. If bolting, you should put spacers between the cabin sides and the acrylic so when you mount the port lights you don't squash all the sealant and end with a very thin film of sealant that will fail as soon as the acrylic expands or contracts. On my windows I put a small chamfer around the outer edge to reduce the bulk effect and it worked quite well. I also applied Sika primer 209 in the area where the tape and Sikaflex is. This primer serves three purposes: 1. You don't see the tape and sealant, it's all masked by the black primer; 2. The primer protects the tape and sealant from UV; 3. The primer promotes the bonding to the acrylic. Using the VHB tape made for a very simple process, you lay the tape on the cabin sides, stick the acrylic to it and then deal with masking and Sikaflex without the acrylic moving around or having dozens of bolts sticking out and having to align them. The VHB tape is very strong although it doesn't look like at first. It's pressure sensitive!" I was lucky enough to be friends with Danny.  Danny won a free round of golf up in Maine. So what do logical people do? Take the day off work to go play golf in the  middle of the week and drink beers all day and night.  We started with a Baxter variety twelve pack for the course.  We grabbed a couple Maine Beer Co IPA's at the bar waiting for our tee time.   Then we jumped over to Novare Res, Portland, ME's best craft beer bar as voted by me.  I started out with the Jolly Pumpkin Oro de Calabaza.  AN entire 750ml to my face.  Next I had one of my favorites, a Saison Dupont before we ventured to another bar in hopes of running into ladies. We went to Porthole's because it has a deck on the water. It wasn't bumping there but the wait staff was hot so it worked out. I'd like to inform you of the next location but I do not remember it, all i remember is listening to a shitty cover band drinking Sam Summer's to ease into a light hangover for work the next day. All in all, Maine is a cool place.

Our guest today is Martin Kastner, the founder and principal designer at Crucial Detail in Chicago. One of his major clients also happens to be one of the world's top restaurants: Alinea. If it sounds funny to hear that a restaurant regularly works with a designer, well: The food they create at Alinea is so inventive and so unique that they literally had to design tools just so people could consume it. If you haven't seen this work before, you owe it to yourself to look at Crucial Detail's website before you get too deep into today's episode. Check it out at crucialdetail.com. Seriously. You're gonna want to see this. Last year, Martin Kickstarted one of the objects he designed for Alinea's cocktail bar, Aviary. It's a drink infusion vessel called Porthole, which absolutely smashed through his goal of $28,500 to raise nearly three-quarters of a million dollars. We talk about that too. If that wasn't enough, Martin has one of the most improbable designer origin stories I have ever heard of. Don't worry, I'm not going to ruin that for you.
