In this reflective solo episode, Ken dives into the powerful idea that “nothing changes until something changes”—and that “something” is usually us. Drawing from personal experience, client conversations, and scriptural insight from the Book of Mormon about things to act and things to be acted upon, Ken challenges listeners to stop waiting for external circumstances, revelations, or perfect timing to transform their lives. Instead, he invites us to recognize the subtle “rules” we've accepted—beliefs that masquerade as obligations—and to question whether they truly serve us.Ken explores how unexamined rules shape our behavior at work, at home, and in spiritual life. From the fear of appearing like a “job hopper,” to absorbing others' stress by default, to believing church activity earns God's love, he reveals how these stories can quietly limit our freedom and growth. The invitation is simple but profound: identify the rules you don't have to follow, take ownership of who you want to become, and act accordingly—because the change you're waiting for starts with you. Please share this episode with someone who needs to hear it. In this episode of The Inner Game of Real Estate Success, Paul breaks down how past experiences create beliefs and behaviors designed to protect you in the moment—but often end up holding you back as you try to reach the next level. You'll learn why these patterns form, how they quietly shape confidence, decision-making, and communication under pressure, and why more information or strategy won't resolve them. This episode introduces memory reconsolidation and explains how hypnosis works to help you safely unlearn outdated beliefs and behaviors at the subconscious level. Paul clarifies what hypnosis is not, what it actually is, the science behind it, and how he uses it with high-performing real estate agents to release protective patterns that once served them—but now limit growth, leadership, and next-level performance. Acting Business Boot Camp

Self-Perception and the Stories We Call "Logic" Most actors don't think they're afraid. They think they're being responsible. They say things like: It's not the right time I need to be more prepared I don't want to do it halfway I'll reach out once things settle down Those sentences sound calm. Thoughtful. Adult. They also quietly keep you from moving. Fear doesn't usually sound dramatic. It sounds reasonable. And that's why it's so effective. Why This Matters So Much Creative entrepreneurs live in nuance. Actors are trained to consider context, timing, readiness, alignment, branding, positioning. All real things. All useful skills. They also make it very easy to hide. Most of the actors I work with aren't lazy. They're functional. Busy. Productive enough to feel justified. But they're also circling the thing they actually want and never quite landing on it. That's not being stuck. That's mislabeling fear as logic. How Fear Disguises Itself Fear rarely says "don't do it." It says: Not yet Be smart Wait until you're more confident It wears a blazer. It uses full sentences. It sounds exactly like you. This isn't self-sabotage. It's self-protection. The problem isn't that you're protecting yourself. The problem is when protection quietly turns into a lifestyle. Something I Want You to Try Identify one agent, director, or producer you've labeled as "out of your league." Then ask yourself what actual evidence proves that. Most of the time, there is none. And if there's no evidence, you're not protecting yourself. You're stalling your life. Actors who move forward act before they feel ready. Ready is a choice. You belong in the room. But you still have to walk through the door. The Other Extreme The pendulum can swing the other way. Overestimation sounds like: I don't need more training My demo is fine I'll just wing it I already know what I'm doing That's just as dangerous. Overestimation blinds you to growth. And growth is essential in this industry. One extreme keeps you small. The other makes you sloppy. Both keep you stuck. What We're Aiming For The middle ground is grounded confidence. Confidence that says: I belong here And I'm still sharpening my craft That's where momentum lives. Why Reaching Out Feels So Hard When actors don't reach out, it's usually not logic. It's fear. Fear of rejection. Fear of being seen. Fear of success. But self-abandonment hurts more than rejection. When you don't give yourself a chance, you reject your future before it has a chance to recognize you. You say no to rooms that haven't even had the opportunity to say yes. A Better Question to Ask Instead of asking, "Am I good enough for that agent?" Ask: "Do my materials and brand match what that agent represents?" This isn't about worth. It's about alignment. You might not be ready for a specific agent yet, and that's okay. That doesn't mean you're not talented. It usually means your materials, brand clarity, or positioning need work. That's strategy. And strategy is learnable. The Five-Day Reset (Brief) This episode introduces a simple five-day process: Name the sentence that keeps you safe but stuck Identify where it came from Look at what it's costing you right now Take one small action that contradicts it Rewrite the sentence with honesty instead of polish Not affirmations. Not hype. Accuracy. Because honesty is more powerful than optimism. Where Confidence Actually Comes From Confidence usually shows up after action. Not before it. It's not a feeling. It's a byproduct. You don't need universal approval to move forward. You need data. Waiting until something feels perfect is a way to avoid collecting real information. And information, even uncomfortable information, is how you grow. If This Brought Something Up If this episode surfaced something for you and you want to share it, you can email me at mandy@actingbusinessbootcamp.com . I genuinely love hearing where things clicked and where they still feel sticky. And if you want to know when the next class or training is coming up, keep an eye on your inbox.

Reflect Forward
The "Not Good Enough Program" and How To Rewrite It w/ Curtis McCullom

Reflect Forward

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 27, 2026 37:59

There is a specific kind of exhaustion that does not come from workload. It comes from living under an internal verdict. Not good enough. Not worthy. Not capable. Leaders can deliver results while quietly chasing approval from a story they accepted long before they had the awareness to question it. Because it often looks like ambition and high standards, we reward it. We call it leadership. In this episode of Reflect Forward, I sit down with Curtis McCullom, CEO of Bespoke Human Potential Coaching and a clinical hypnotherapist, to explore what actually drives behavior beneath performance. Curtis introduces his Legit Mindset framework, learning, growing, expanding, and transforming. The sequence matters. Learning reveals what is running you. Growing releases emotional charge at the root. Expanding clarifies who you are becoming. Transforming requires daily reconditioning. Transformation is not a moment. It is a practice. Key Takeaways • Most performance issues are rooted in subconscious programming, not lack of effort. • Behavior is a pattern, not an identity. • Regulating the nervous system is a leadership skill. • Responsibility restores power, not shame. • Lasting transformation requires daily repetition, not a single breakthrough. We challenge one of the most common leadership myths. Most leaders are not stuck because they lack discipline or strategy. They are stuck because an old program is still running. Behavior is not identity. You are not broken. You are running a pattern. When that distinction lands, shame falls away and responsibility returns. We also explore triggers and nervous system regulation. A trigger feels external, but it is internal information. Owning it does not excuse others. It restores agency. Responsibility is not blame. Responsibility is power. And when the body is activated, the mind is not choosing. It is executing a script. Calm the body first, then the thinking can change. Language becomes another doorway to ownership. Shifting from “I am not enough” to “I am feeling not enough” separates identity from experience and opens better questions. Not why am I like this, but what is driving this right now and how do I want to respond. This conversation is a reminder that goals alone do not create change. Goals planted in bad soil only grow more weeds. Without addressing the emotional root, leaders simply repeat patterns at a higher level. Real change comes from releasing what is running you and reinforcing what you choose daily. Mic Drop Moments • Responsibility is not blame. Responsibility is power. • If you are activated, you are not choosing. You are executing a script. • Behavior is not identity. You are not broken. You are running a pattern. • Goals planted in bad soil only grow more weeds. • Transformation is not a breakthrough moment. It is a daily practice. This episode is an invitation to stop executing old scripts and start choosing who you are becoming. Episode 436 | AI and Automation: What Should School Owners Actually Use? Podcast Description AI is everywhere right now—and for a lot of martial arts school owners, it's either exciting—or overwhelming. In Episode 436, Duane Brumitt and Shihan Allie Alberigo cut through the hype and get practical about what AI and automation are actually good for inside a school. They talk about why tech won't fix broken fundamentals, how to audit your numbers before you start building automations, and the real-world use cases that can save you time without turning your school into a “robot school.” Along the way, they share stories from the trenches—including Allie using AI to create a ninja “we miss you” video, using ChatGPT to rewrite a heated parent message into something kind and effective, and why too many automations can create “white noise” that makes families tune you out. Key Takeaways AI and automation are different tools. Automation is “if/then” triggers (texts, emails, reminders). AI is adaptive and conversational (helping with replies, content, and decision support). AI won't fix broken fundamentals. It can't repair a weak offer, unclear schedules, poor culture, or bad sales conversations—but it can improve speed, consistency, and follow-through. Audit before you automate. Track lead response time, booking rate, show-up rate, close rate, and first-90-day retention before you start adding more tech. Speed still wins. When possible, the best move is still personal contact fast—call or text a lead within minutes. Too many automations can backfire. If families get flooded with emails/texts, it becomes “white noise” and they opt out. Use AI to communicate with more care. Allie shares how he used ChatGPT to rewrite a message to a parent (when emotions were high) and it completely changed the outcome. Must-haves first. Automated lead follow-up, scheduling/confirmations, and no-show recovery are the highest ROI automations. Nice-to-haves next. Content help, review requests, and referral prompts can work great once your basics are clean. Don't automate the important stuff. Billing disputes, cancellations, complaints, and emotionally charged conversations need a human. Guardrails matter. Build a voice guide, set rules (tone, language, escalation), and always offer a “talk to a human” option. Action Steps for School Owners Do a quick audit this week. Lead response time (minutes, not hours) Booking rate Show-up rate Close rate First 90-day retention Fix your #1 leak before adding new tools. If your show-up rate is low, focus on confirmations and reminders. If your close rate is low, focus on sales conversations. Let the numbers tell you what to fix. Set up (or clean up) your must-have automations. Instant lead follow-up (text/email) Scheduling + confirmations No-show follow-up + reschedule prompts Audit your existing automations for “white noise.” Check if families are receiving overlapping offers or too many messages. Clean up old tags, old campaigns, and outdated promos. Use AI as your “calm-down coach” for tough messages. Before you hit send on a heated reply, paste it into ChatGPT and ask: “Rewrite this in a loving, compassionate, clear way.” Build an FAQ/onboarding library to reduce repetitive questions. Put your most common questions in one place (website/app/videos): uniforms, promotions, how early to arrive, what to expect, etc. Create a simple weekly stats habit. Start small: trials booked, trials showed, enrollments, and which program they chose. Then build from there. Set guardrails so you don't become a “robot school.” Create a voice guide (phrases you use/never use) Define when a human takes over (complaints, cancellations, billing, pricing) Always offer a human option Additional Resources Mentioned Spark Membership Software (automations, follow-up, reporting) LeadHunter Media (lead follow-up + AI texting support) Notion (used to track automations and systems) Upstream by Dan Heath (the “stop rescuing people downstream” story) Atomic Habits by James Clear Everybody Matters (mentioned as a book Duane is filtering through AI) Dan Sullivan (concept: “I always have a person between me and the technology”) If you enjoyed the episode, please subscribe, leave a review, and share it with another school owner. And remember: AI should give you more freedom—not more work.

What happens when working harder stops working? In this episode of Wine After Work, Bryce sits down with Ritu G. Mehrish — former corporate executive, leadership advisor, and author of Leader's Block and Rewrite the Rules. After leading global teams across five continents and managing multi-million-dollar business lines, Ritu reached a pivotal moment many high-performing leaders quietly face: the strategies that once worked… no longer did. That turning point became the foundation of her work today — helping leaders navigate burnout, loss of clarity, confidence dips, and high-stakes transitions that don't show up on performance reviews. This is a grounded, honest conversation about what it really takes to recover, reset, and lead forward when the path isn't clear. In This Episode, We Discuss: Why high performers often feel "stuck" — even when they're successful on paper The hidden leadership moments no one prepares you for (burnout, self-doubt, transition missteps) Ritu's "Critical Quarter" framework for navigating the first 90 days of leadership change How perception-based stakeholder feedback can create momentum instead of fear The invisible cultural dynamics impacting Asian women leaders — and what leaders can learn from that research How to rewrite the rules when your old playbook no longer fits Who This Episode Is For: Leaders navigating change, transition, or burnout Women questioning visibility, confidence, or next-level growth Executives who want clarity without clichés   https://www.ritumehrish.com/ Linkedin

Brittany Ellich: Using AI to Maintain Software, Not Rewrite It

Maintainable

Rewrites are seductive. Clean slates promise clarity, speed, and “doing it right this time.” In practice, they're often late, over budget, and quietly demoralizing. In this episode of Maintainable, Robby sits down with Brittany Ellich, a Senior Software Engineer at GitHub, to talk about a different path. One rooted in stewardship, readability, and resisting the urge to start over.Brittany's career began with a long string of rebuild projects. Over time, she noticed a pattern. The estimates were wrong. Feature development stalled. Teams burned energy reaching parity with systems they'd already had. That experience pushed her toward a strong belief: if software is in production and serving users, it's usually worth maintaining.[00:00:57] What well-maintained software actually looks likeFor Brittany, readability is the first signal. If code can't be understood, it can't be changed safely. Maintenance begins with making systems approachable for the next person.[00:01:42] Rethinking technical debtShe explains how her understanding of technical debt has evolved. Rather than a fixed category of work, it's often anything that doesn't map directly to new features. Bugs, reliability issues, and long-term risks frequently get lumped together, making prioritization harder than it needs to be.[00:05:49] Why AI changes the maintenance equationBrittany describes how coding agents have made it easier to tackle small, previously ignored maintenance tasks. Instead of waiting for debt to accumulate into massive projects, teams can chip away incrementally. (Related: GitHub Copilot and the Copilot coding agent workflow she's explored.)[00:07:16] Context from GitHub's billing systemsWorking on metered billing at GitHub means correctness and reliability matter more than flash. Billing should be boring. When it's not, customers notice quickly.[00:11:43] Navigating a multi-era codebaseGitHub's original Rails codebase is still in active use. Brittany relies heavily on Git blame and old pull requests to understand why decisions were made, treating them as a form of living documentation.[00:25:27] Treating coding agents like teammatesRather than delegating massive changes, Brittany assigns agents small, well-scoped tasks. She approaches them the same way she would a new engineer: clear instructions, limited scope, and careful review.[00:36:00] Structuring the day to avoid cognitive overloadShe breaks agent interaction into focused windows, checking in a few times a day instead of constantly monitoring progress. This keeps deep work intact while still moving maintenance forward.[00:40:24] Low-risk ways to experimentImproving test coverage and generating repository instructions are safe entry points. These changes add value without risking production behavior.[00:54:10] Navigating team resistance and ethicsBrittany acknowledges skepticism around AI and encourages teams to start with existing backlog problems rather than selling AI as a feature factory.[00:57:57] Books, habits, and staying balancedOutside of software, Brittany recommends Atomic Habits by James Clear, sharing how small routines help her stay focused. The takeaway is clear. AI doesn't replace engineering judgment. Used thoughtfully, it can support the unglamorous work that keeps software alive.Good software doesn't need a rewrite. It needs caretakers.References MentionedGitHub – Brittany's current role and the primary environment discussedGitHub Universe – Where Brittany presented her coding agent workflowAtomic Habits by James Clear – Brittany's recommended book outside of techOvercommitted - Podcast Brittany co-hostsThe Balanced Engineer Newsletter – Brittany's monthly newsletter on engineering, leadership, and balanceBrittany Ellich's website – Central hub for her writing and linksGitHub Copilot – The AI tooling discussed throughout the episodeHow the GitHub billing team uses the coding agent in GitHub Copilot to continuously burn down technical debt – GitHub blog post referencedThanks to Our Sponsor!Turn hours of debugging into just minutes! Amber Freed transformed the shock of her son's diagnosis with an ultra-rare neurodevelopmental disorder into a determined campaign for gene therapy. With no clinical roadmap, sparse literature, and doctors offering only symptomatic care, she taught herself biology basics, established a nonprofit, and assembled a scientific team. She focused on gene replacement therapy as the most viable path, and son became the first patient treated in a clinical trial of the experimental gene therapy last September. We spoke to Freed, founder and CEO of SLC6A1 Connect, about how a parent with no scientific background catalyzed the development of the first experimental gene therapy for SLC6A1-related disorder, mobilized scientists, and what other rare disease communities can learn from her journey.

THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

Doing more, faster, better with less has become the permanent setting in modern business. Post-pandemic, with tighter budgets, higher customer expectations, and AI speeding up competitors, leaders can't rely on "the boss with the whiteboard marker" to magically produce genius ideas on demand. You need a repeatable innovation system that draws out creativity from the whole organisation—especially the people closest to customers. Below is a practical nine-step innovation process leaders can run again and again, so innovation becomes a habit—not a lucky accident.  How do leaders define "success" before trying to innovate? Innovation gets messy fast unless everyone is crystal clear on what "good" looks like. Step One is Visualisation: define the goal, the "should be" case, and what success looks like in concrete terms—customer outcomes, cost, quality, time, risk, or growth. In practice, this is where executives at firms like Toyota or Unilever would translate strategy into a shared target: "Reduce onboarding time from 14 days to 3," or "Increase repeat purchase by 10% in APAC by Q4." Compare that with many SMEs where the goal is vague ("be more innovative") and the team sprints hard in random directions. Do now (mini-summary): Write a one-sentence "should be" target and 3 measurable success indicators (KPI, timeline, customer impact). Align the team before you chase ideas. What's the fastest way to gather the right facts without killing creativity? Great ideas come from great inputs, and Step Two is Fact Finding—collect data before opinions. Leaders should separate "facts" from "feelings" by digging into who/what/when/where/why/how. This is where many organisations discover their measurement systems are weak—or worse, wrong. In the US, you might lean on product analytics, A/B testing, and voice-of-customer tools. In Japan, you'll often combine frontline observation (genba thinking) with structured reporting—useful, but sometimes filtered by hierarchy. Either way, don't judge yet. Just get the evidence: customer complaints, churn reasons, sales cycle delays, defect rates, staff turnover, and time wasted in approvals. Do now (mini-summary): Collect 10 hard facts (numbers, patterns, examples) and 10 "customer voice" quotes. No solutions yet—just reality. How do you frame the real problem so you don't solve the wrong thing? The way you state the problem determines the quality of the ideas you'll get. Step Three is Problem (or Opportunity) Finding: clarify what's actually holding you back, where resources leak, and what success constraints exist. This is harder than it sounds. Ask five people the main problem and you'll get eight opinions—especially in matrixed multinationals or fast-moving startups. Use smart problem framing techniques: "How might we…?", "What's the bottleneck?", "If we fixed one thing this quarter, what would move the needle?" Compare Japan vs the US here: US teams may jump to action quickly; Japan teams may seek consensus early. Both can miss the root cause if the framing is sloppy. Do now (mini-summary): Rewrite your problem three ways: customer-impact, process-bottleneck, and cost-leakage. Pick the clearest, most actionable version. How do you run ideation so the loud people don't crush the good ideas? Step Four is Idea Finding, and the golden rule is: no judgement, chase volume, and do it in silence. This is where most leaders accidentally sabotage innovation—someone blurts an idea, the "bolshie" confident voices start critiquing, and the timid thinkers shut down. Silent idea generation (think brainwriting rather than brainstorming) helps deeper thinkers contribute and reduces status bias—critical in hierarchical cultures and in teams where junior staff defer to seniority. If you want better ideas, ask the people closest to the coal face: new hires, customer support, frontline sales, and the group that best matches your buyers' profile. Often they see problems the C-suite never touches. Do now (mini-summary): Run 10 minutes of silent brainwriting: each person writes 10 ideas. No talking. Then collect and cluster ideas by theme. How do leaders choose the best ideas without politics or "rank wins"? Step Five is Solution Finding—now you're allowed to judge, but you must judge fairly. The risk here is predictable: seniority dominates, juniors defer, and the "easy consensus" becomes a polite rubber stamp. Use a structured selection method: score ideas against agreed criteria (impact, effort, speed, risk, customer value). Borrow from frameworks like Stage-Gate, Lean Startup (testable hypotheses), and even RICE scoring (Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort). Compare sectors: in B2B, feasibility and implementation risk often weigh more; in consumer markets, speed and customer delight can dominate. The point is to remove the "who said it" factor. Do now (mini-summary): Build a simple 4-criteria scorecard and rank the top 10 ideas. Make scoring anonymous if hierarchy is distorting decisions. How do you get buy-in and actually execute innovation in the real world? Ideas don't win—execution wins, and Steps Six to Nine turn creativity into results. Step Six is Acceptance Finding: sell the idea internally for time, money, and people. Step Seven is Implementation: define who does what by when, with budget and resources. Step Eight is Follow Up: check progress early so you don't discover the team is zigging when you needed zagging. Step Nine is Evaluation: did it work, was it worth it, and what did we learn? In 2025-era organisations, this is also where AI can help: drafting business cases, mapping risks, creating implementation plans, and summarising learnings—without replacing leadership accountability. Startups might run faster experiments; conglomerates might need governance and change management. Either way, the process keeps you moving. Do now (mini-summary): Assign an owner, set a 30-day milestone, and define the success metric. Review weekly. Capture learnings as you go. Final wrap-up A surprising number of companies still have no shared system for generating ideas—so innovation depends on mood, meetings, or the loudest voice in the room. A repeatable nine-step process creates better ideation, stronger decision-making, and cleaner execution. Run it consistently, and innovation becomes part of your organisational DNA—not a once-a-year workshop. Quick next steps for leaders Pick one business pain point and run Steps 1–4 in a 60-minute session this week. Use silent idea generation to protect the deeper thinkers. Score ideas with a simple rubric to avoid politics. Pilot one idea in 30 days, then evaluate and repeat. FAQs Is brainstorming or brainwriting better for innovation? Brainwriting usually beats brainstorming because it reduces groupthink and status bias. Silent idea generation produces more ideas and more diverse ideas in most teams. How long does the nine-step innovation process take? You can run Steps 1–5 in a half-day and Steps 6–9 over 30–90 days. The timeline depends on complexity, risk, and resources. What if leadership won't support the idea? Treat Step Six like a sales process—build a business case and show trade-offs. If you can't win resources, scale the idea down into a testable pilot.   Author credentials Dr. Greg Story, Ph.D. in Japanese Decision-Making, is President of Dale Carnegie Tokyo Training and Adjunct Professor at Griffith University. Laura Delano is the author of Unshrunk: A Story of Psychiatric Treatment Resistance. Laura was fourteen years old when she saw her first psychiatrist, which was not something openly discussed at the time in her wealthy hometown of Greenwich, CT. Over the next 14 years, Laura was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, depression, social anxiety disorder, eating disorder, poly-substance dependence, and borderline personality disorder. These conditions earned her prescriptions for Seroquel, Abilify, Klonopin, Ativan, Ambien, Prozac, Effexor, Celexa, Cymbalta, Wellbutrin, Lexapro, lithium, and many more. During this time, she engaged in self-harm, spent time in psychiatric hospitals, and attempted to take her own life. In 2010, Laura decided she had had enough with all the diagnoses and the drugs. Her book tells the story of how she weaned herself from this medical regimen and found a stable life free of prescriptions. You've gotta listen to this conversation. Laura and I talk about mental health, the pharmaceutical industry, how her behavior affected those around her, how her family dealt with their difficult sister and daughter, and how that love finally helped to see her through.Btw, the ‘80s punk band whose name I couldn't remember around the 10-minute mark is Suicidal Tendencies. Thanks to my pal, “Nashville Ben” for recommending Laura's book for me.
