There's a lot on my plate right now and things are stacking so I've been seeking ways to mitigate the heavy load when letting it go isn't an option.I address self-care and the challenges learning to love yourself can present if there's some conditioning to battle. Sarah Jarvis covers the Backdraft Effect in this article. Then I go into a discussion of a new trend called Glimmers. They are the opposite of triggers. Here's a brief bullet point I covered to better define a glimmer.I also share a well done (and free) resource on self-care through somatic movement. You can find the article here and it links to the YouTube videos that guide you through the practice. And lastly, I am reinstating the season and episode numbers. I'm not sure when I stopped that or why, but they're back. This is season 4 and great things are on the way. As we mark British Heart week (7th - 15th June), new research has found that while over half of people in the UK aged 55 and over have spoken about their cholesterol levels with a GP, there are still gaps in the public's knowledge regarding cholesterol and its impact on our health.Close to half of adults in the UK are living with cholesterol levels above national guidelines, putting them at risk of suffering from heart conditions and other circulatory diseases, according to the British Heart Foundation.High levels of cholesterol can be caused by several reasons, such as lifestyle, family history and health issues. There are some factors, such as age, gender and family history that cannot be controlled, however, other aspects such as changing diet, increasing exercise and stopping smoking can all help to lower cholesterol levels.A new survey, commissioned by Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK, has revealed that while 52% have spoken about cholesterol with their GP and half (50%) have had their cholesterol levels checked with their GP practice, many are still unaware of what it means to have good cholesterol or what a healthy level is.Almost a third of people (29%) were unsure or didn't know where to get a cholesterol check and only 6% knew how often they should get their cholesterol checked as recommended by the NHS every five years.People with high cholesterol often don't display symptoms, and many don't realise they have a problem with cholesterol until they develop a more serious health issue, such as a heart attack or stroke. Cholesterol levels are measured through a blood test and are available as part of an NHS health check provided for free every five years for those aged 40-74.For those aged 55 or over who have previously suffered a serious medical episode such as a heart attack or stroke, 76% were very or somewhat concerned about suffering from another related condition, but more than a quarter (27%) didn't plan to or hadn't thought about making any changes to manage their cholesterol levels. It's 60 years since the contraceptive pill was made available on the NHS. It has had a revolutionary impact on women's lives and on society. In 1961 women often married at an early age and many were expected to stay at home and raise a family while men went out to work. The ability for women to have control of their own fertility meant they could choose to have children and a career on their own terms. The availability of the pill undoubtedly changed the nature of sexual relationships, even if it was not the single cause of the sexual revolution. While many view sex without the possibility of pregnancy as integral to a woman's moral agency, social conservatives argue that separating sex from reproduction threatens the traditional family unit, which they see as the foundation of a stable society. More recently, there has been a backlash by some women against hormonal contraceptives to try to reclaim autonomy over their bodies. 60 years on, we live in a very different society but can we say we have made progress when it comes to attitudes towards women and sex? Teenage girls report sexual abuse in schools and on social media, while concern is growing among experts about the impact on children of readily-available pornographic images. If this isn't where we hoped we might be, where do we go from here? Where now for women's liberation? Is it time for another sexual revolution? With Dr. Sarah Jarvis, Caroline Farrow, Emma Chan and Louise Perry. Producer: Dan Tierney.

Summer's here and despite the restrictions still in place on social gathering we're still managing to meet up with friends and enjoy the odd night out. One aspect of that is of course looking your best and a big part of that is your hair, which has had to take a backseat in terms of grooming and maintenance over the last eighteen months of lockdowns. But, we are returning to salons and apparently trying lots of new and old styles, as well as getting more creative with colour. Hair stylist Nicky Clarke gives Emma Barnett a summer make over and Camilla Kay from Glamour Magazine points out the trends including seventies flicks and “big hair” and the “Shullet” – the modern take on the mullet. Most of us would think of the police as a safe place to turn to in a time of need. But it's a belief that has been seriously questioned by a couple of incidents over the past year. In a joint investigation with Newsnight we asked police forces in the UK, how many police had been accused of sexual misconduct. Of course most police officers do their jobs with integrity and honesty but campaigners say some of the results were worrying. Our reporter Melanie Abbott has been looking at this. Shamima Begum, Kimberly Polman and Hoda Muthana are just a few of the names who made headline news around the world after leaving their homes in the West to join the so called Islamic State. With rare access to the detention camp in Northern Syria, Alba Sotorra Clua's new film 'The Return: Life After ISIS' features some of the women who devoted their lives to the group and who feel they should be given the chance to start over, back home in the West. MP Jess Phillips is calling for there to be less shame around HPV – a sexually transmitted infection that she had in her twenties. Most sexually active people will contract HPV but won't know they have it. For 90% of people it clears up but for others it can be serious. Jess Phillips found out she had HPV when she was 22 and pregnant and is talking about this to raise awareness for Cervical Cancer Screening Awareness week. Dr Sarah Jarvis also joins Emma. She gives us some behind the scenes glimpses of life in foodie television, such as MasterChef: The Professionals and The Great British Menu. Looking to the future of food programming, Sally and Dr Sarah certainly know where they would like the spotlight to rest. As members of the advisory team to Lo Salt – the all-natural alternative that has 66% less sodium than regular salt – Dr Sarah and Sally want to see delicious, healthy food getting more coverage in mainstream cookery shows. Beko, Europe’s leading home appliance brand, has developed HygieneShieldTM, a ground-breaking portfolio of household products, created in response to emerging consumer needs in the post-lockdown era. The new portfolio includes seven appliances with in-built disinfection programmes and functions to disinfect packaged food and belongings to help people adjust to the ‘new normal’ at home. Developed as a result of in-depth global consumer research and with innovative new technology, the HygieneShieldTM product line has the power to kill more than 99% of bacteria and viruses (including coronavirus), providing a level of reassurance unrivalled in the market place. Beko’s consumer research, across 31 countries revealed that one of the primary concerns is hygiene. Many of us are disinfecting supermarket purchases when we get home, worrying about handling mobile phones and keys, or not bringing coats into the house. People have increased the amount of cleaning and laundry in their homes, with some disinfecting bedding for the first time. 75% of people are cleaning the house more often, 64% are doing more laundry and 68% are paying more attention to the cleanliness of the packaging on purchased products The line takes inspiration from nature and uses methods such as steam and heat to enable consumers to achieve excellent hygiene results at home. At today’s virtual launch, Arçelik’s CEO Hakan Bulgurlu was joined for a virtual discussion by Arçelik’s CMO, Zeynep Yal?m Uzun and guest speakers, medical broadcaster and GP Dr Sarah Jarvis and Christopher Sanderson, Future Laboratory’s Co-founder & CEO to announce the launch. Hakan Bulgurlu said: “It has been a very difficult year and we believe that now more than ever, everyone should have access to good quality products that care for them and the environment. We are excited to introduce Beko’s latest innovations and our first-ever full product line to market. The products have been tailored to help consumers achieve professional levels of hygiene at home and protect them from infections and diseases. Our technologies are being independently tested by Airmid Health Group, a respected biomedical research organization. “As of today, HygieneShieldTM washing machines, washer dryers, ovens and refrigerators have been shown to provide more than 99% virus reduction. Airmid tests for UV disinfection cabinet and tumble dryers are in progress and we expect to finalize the testing and certification processes by November. Our dishwashers are being independently tested by Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences and the testing and certification process is expected to be completed in October. We hope that our products will give consumers peace of mind that their homes are safe and clean, as we all continue to adjust to the ‘new normal’.” Dr Sarah Jarvis added: “I’ve spoken positively on TV about UV light for disinfection purposes: it has been widely used for sterilisation in hospitals, aeroplanes and factories for some years. It has also been used in China since April this year. COVID-19 has made us all think about how we live outside the home, with masks and social distancing, but I’m seeing my patients start to think about hygiene in the home, where we are spending so much more of our time. I do not think we should all be going back to the workplace yet – working from home wherever we can, will keep us safe and reduce the spread of COVID-19. Keeping things clean is the challenge; I advise my patients to wash towels (especially those from the downstairs loo) and dishcloths more frequently and to wash face masks and coverings after every use.” Christopher Sanderson, CEO of Future Laboratory, a trend forecasting consultancy in London, writes in a new report: “The home has played a pivotal role in the recent global crisis, forced to double as office, school, gym, restaurant or even a healthcare setting, our homes have become the front line of our external lives.” Heighten your hygiene ...

The Netflix series Unorthodox tells the story of a teenager who flees her ultra Orthodox Hasidic Jewish community and an arranged marriage in New York, for a new life in Berlin. There are many variations on this dish. Here I am giving the recipe for two of my favourite versions. One is a mix of fresh, raw ingredients while the other requires a bit of cooking. Either way, Aloo Bharta goes perfectly with dal and rice. If you want to make this dish for more than two people, multiply the quantities given below. Serves 2 2 large baking potatoes (approximately 500 g/1 lb 2 oz) For the fresh, raw version 2 tbsp mustard oil, olive oil or argan oil 1⁄2 tsp salt 1 green chilli, finely chopped 1 small shallot or red onion, finely chopped 1 tbsp finely chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves For the cooked version 2 tbsp mustard oil, olive oil or argan oil 1⁄2 tsp salt 1 dried red chilli, broken into small pieces 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 small shallot or red onion, finely chopped Small handful of coriander (cilantro) leaves, to garnish Cook the potatoes by either baking or boiling them using your preferred method. While the potatoes are still warm but cool enough to handle, remove their skins. In a bowl, mash the potatoes until smooth, using a masher or fork. To make the fresh, raw version, simply add all the other ingredients to the mashed potato and mix. Serve at room temperature. To make the cooked version, in a frying pan (skillet), heat the oil, add all the other ingredients, except the coriander leaves, and fry until brown. Add the warm fried onion mixture to the mashed potatoes and mix. Serve at room temperature with a few fresh coriander leaves scattered over the top. Last week we discussed the shortages of menopause treatment drug HRT, which began in late 2018. This week, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists have said they are ‘very concerned’ about women buying HRT products from unregulated online sites. Some sites were found to be selling products at four times the NHS price. Dr Sarah Jarvis, clinical director of patientacess.com, offers advice to HRT users in light of the shortages. Anna Whitehouse and Matt Farquharson are the duo behind the comedy podcast, Dirty Mother Pukka They have a new book out, Where’s My Happy Ending? where they discuss the trials, tribulations & rewards of relationships and family life. A new report published by the charity Women for Refugee Women claims that women who have fled rape and other sexual violence in their country of origin are being made vulnerable to further abuse in the UK because of government policy which makes them destitute. The report contains the stories of over 100 asylum seeking women. We hear from one of them and Jane speaks to human rights activist, Natasha Walter, founder of Women for Refugee Women. Friendship can be one of the most powerful and important aspects of any woman’s life. We explore what sisterhood means to different women at different points in their lives. As we stand at the start of a new decade we look at three key issues that will shape women’s lives in the 2020s. And we hear some big ideas on how things could change. How do we tackle the crisis in social care in the next decade? Given the fundamental caring roles women perform in households, what new ways of thinking about and valuing care work might help find solutions? In women’s health - are we getting access to the right treatments and diagnosis? With the growing visibility of conditions such as endometriosis, so long down played as 'women’s troubles', we’ll ask what treatments and drugs are getting funded and why. How could science and medicine better serve women? What does the workplace of the future need to look like for women, and how do we get there? Our guests are Kate Raworth, a self-described renegade economist, the sciences author Angela Saini, GP and Clinical Director of PatientAccess.com, Dr Sarah Jarvis, and the writer and activist Beatrix Campbell. She is, along with husband Bill Gates, the founder the world's largest private charitable organisation and has consistently been ranked as one of the world's most powerful women by Forbes. So why has creating equality in her home life been such a struggle? When Josie Rourke became the Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse she was one of the first female theatre directors to be appointed to that role. Nearly eight years later she tells Jenni why she has chosen the musical Sweet Charity as her swan song and, in terms of gender, how much the face of theatre has changed in the last ten years. The UK government is backing a Nigerian advertising campaign urging Nigerian women and girls to find jobs at home instead of “risking a life of modern slavery” in Britain. So how bad is the problem here in the UK? Jenni is joined by Kathryn Baldacchino, Project Manager at Protect, the Anti-Trafficking Project at the British Red Cross and Kate Roberts, Head of Office at the Human Trafficking Foundation. The World Health Organisation has advised screen time is best avoided for the first two years of life. But what evidence is there behind this advice? No, son, I’m directing from it.’” - Chris Jarvis Show Notes: Making it work, when both parents are working in the arts, takes some extra planning and effort. Family comes first. There are lots of school obligations: concerts, competitions, grades, shows, but you can’t let that overrun your parenting obligations. Block off time just for family, and protect it. Tag team when necessary; track and manage schedules to minimize conflicts. Use those great volunteers who want to help entertain your child while you are in rehearsal. Recognize each other’s need for adult conversation, or the need for no conversation. Bio: Chris Jarvis was born in Abilene, Texas, but moved to New Mexico when he was 5 years old. He graduated from high school there, and then rushed back to Texas, where he graduated from Lubbock Christian University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. Sarah Jarvis was born and raised in Brownfield, Texas, and she lived there until she also attended Lubbock Christian University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, and stalked Chris until he married her. Should “walk-on” or “grid girls” be banned from the modern sporting arena? And if so, who is qualified to make that decision? Are they just decoration? Is it better to see them doing the sport rather than in front of the sport? It's a very divisive topic, with the girls themselves saying they love the job and to leave them be. Obviously, this is something you see on the Isle of Man at least twice a year, as both the TT and Festival of Motorcyling roll into town with all the glamour and sponsors and everything that goes with – including grid girls. So Christy caught up with Jorden Rafferty - one of the Sure TT grid girls - and Sarah Jarvis, Marketing Manager of the company, who have been one of the TT’s headline sponsors for several years. Their response was fascinating. Jorden is pictured on the left, with Sarah 2nd from right.

The Bittersweet Truth About What We Eat

What should we be eating to live a long and healthy life? How is it that some people can eat absolutely anything and stay slim, while others on a ‘healthy’ diet get fat? Why is it that Cubans are much healthier than Americans, despite eating on average twice the amount of sugar? To unpack the truth behind the often confusing information about the food we eat, Intelligence Squared brought together some of the world’s leading experts on the science of human nutrition and health. Sugar has recently replaced saturated fat as the nutritional enemy number one. The theory is that it messes with our metabolism and causes heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Arguing that sugar is the tobacco of the new millennium in our event was acclaimed science writer Gary Taubes, whose new book The Case Against Sugar has been making waves on both sides of the Atlantic. No one doubts that consuming a lot of sugar is unhealthy, but does the ‘sugar is poison’ theory really tell the whole story? A different explanation lies in a subject that has been getting a lot of attention recently – our gut microbiome. This is made up of the trillions of bacteria that inhabit our intestines and help digest our food and keep us healthy. The bad news is that the diversity of our microbes has plummeted in recent years due to the narrower range of foods and the predominance of processed junk in the Western diet. Research indicates that, rather than any single foodstuff being to blame for the rise of obesity and other modern diseases, the root of the problem lies in our depleted microbiomes. Setting out the new research on our gut bacteria and debunking many popular myths about diet was Tim Spector, an award-winning scientist who runs the British Gut project. What makes the subject even more fascinating is that we all have a very individual cocktail of bacteria in our gut, and research shows that the way we respond to food relates more to our own specific set of microbes than the calories in the food itself. Joining us was Eran Segal, one of world’s leading scientists in this field, who will explain how his lab can wire you up and predict precisely which carbohydrates you should and shouldn’t eat so as to prevent weight gain and be healthy. The results can be surprising. In 60% of cases, they show that you can enjoy sugary ice-cream but should avoid rice. A sharp critic of many of the ‘fashionable’ theories about diet and wellbeing is Sarah Jarvis, a GP who appears regularly on BBC radio and television. Her goal is to help her patients and the general public get the best quality information on nutrition and lifestyle so that they can make the informed decisions they need to be in control of their health. Chairing the event was Xand van Tulleken, a medical doctor and popular television broadcaster, who with his twin brother Chris, has presented a number of documentaries, often testing various diets on their identical genes.
