Mitchell Baldridge, the world's most famous accountant, and entrepreneur-turned-farmer Scott Hambrick are back! In today's episode, they respond to a listener email asking for opinions on their business idea: a "microgym" in which customers pay a monthly fee for a time slot at a small but well appointed barbell gym. The gym would have all the necesasry equipment to train for powerlifting, weightlifting, and crossfit, but in a small footprint, under 1,000 square feet. Mitchell also shares an update on the recent tax season, and the state of hiring accountants in 2024. Want your question answered on a future podcast? Mitchell Baldridge, CPA and Scott Hambrick reach into the Stupid Tax inbox and look at three questions submitted by listeners. One young business owner started a handyman business in the fall of 2023 and started off with a bang, making $14k in his first full month of operation. The following three months were lean, however, with revenue falling off signficantly and net operating losses. Mitchell and Scott offer some advice on ways to figure out what worked in the first month, and target his customer base with higher margin, more attractive service offerings. Another listener has been sitting on a business idea for quite some time, and put together a pitch deck to lay out his plan: a community to help Christian fathers improve their relationship with their children. Mitchell and Scott point out the problems with a business like this, and more to the point, the problem with taking so long to try out a business idea and figure out if it works or not. Mitchell and Scott offer a third listener advice on building a solid marketing pipeline to reach customers by reducing the friction between customers receiving communication and buying services. Mitchell Baldridge, CPA, CFP, talks to Matt about how to find the perfect accountant, something a growing business will have to do at some point. He owns Baldridge Financial and Better Book Keeping. Check out the Stupid Tax podcast, with Scott Hambrick and Mitchell Baldridge. How to Find the Perfect Account - First, Don't If you're starting a business, you first need to find clients and jobs. Start making money. When it comes to tracking and handling money, start a business bank account or use a different bank account than your personal. Simply, you need to clearly separate business expenses from personal expenses so at the point when you or someone else needs to prepare taxes, things are easy to delineate. Early in the year (when this podcast airs) is a great time to start a business, because you have the rest of the year (and really until taxes are due) to get your money in order. Right now, though, it's just about not screwing up. Another recommendation, which is unrelated to accounting but for business owners is to not expand your expenses to your new income. If you make $80,000 at your full-time job and begin to make money from your company, at some point you'll have to quit the full-time job and take a paycheck. Save that other money, pay off debt - but don't increase your monthly expenses. How to Find the Perfect Account - Use Your Network The best way to find a accountant is similar to how you might find an electrician. Ask people you trust about who they use. For example, Matt asked his trusted HVAC technician if he can recommend an electrician. He did, and the electrician provided great service. Try to find business owners you can talk to and pick their brains with. It might be a group of people who are in the same industry, or not, who are all small business owners. Similarly, you might reach out to someone who has done this before. Mitchell, for example, reached out to Scott after hearing him talk about his experience with Diamond David Keesling on the Barbell Logic podcast. Check out the Barbell Logic podcast landing page. Do you own a job or a business? Does owning a business make sense for you? Either way, you need to approach this intelligently, thinking about the business you're in and the job you have. Check out the Stupid Tax podcast, with Scott Hambrick and Mitchell Baldridge. Job or Business - Should I Own a Business? Not everyone should own a business. Probably, most people should not own a business. It's not an insult: it's reality. Owning a business is too much risk and stress for some people. You still may be an excellent coach or technician. You may provide a huge amount of value to your employer or to your customers. If you're the right person to own a business, you probably find yourself unable to put up with some of the downsides to jobs and tend to naturally get after it. Matt and Scott are great examples of people who are natural business owners. Job or Business - Which Do You Own You may want to consider simply owning your own job, rather than a business. For example, you may want to be a coach, get as many clients, but not be a business owner. You may own a job. You'll still have to be your own boss and complete certain functions that aren't simply coaching, but you may not want to have other employees, and may be happy with growing to a point, making good money, and not be worried about a business. As a business owner, you assume the risk. You will likely, over time, hire employees - some will be technicians, others will be managers. You need to understand the nature of the business you are in. For example, Scott talks about the gym owner business as a type of real estate. Job or Business - How Good Can This Get? Regardless of whether you own your job, a business, or you work for someone else, you need to think about what your options are. What is important to you? Can you deal with the risk and stress of business ownership, or not? Do you want to grow a business, or are you okay with a smaller, steady income stream? Would you like to simply punch the time clock and not worry about things when you're off? Understanding the nature of your business or job and whether it is really a business or job is important. On the Stupid Tax podcast, Scott and Mitchell discuss thinking or your job, even if you work for someone else, as a service you are providing that employer. It may make sense, for some, to work for that company as a contractor rather than an employee, for example. Do you own a job or business? Check out the Barbell Logic podcast landing page. Mitchell Baldridge and Scott Hambrick answer a listener question asking about switching from cash accounting to accrual accounting in his farming buinsess, and a potential tax bill that would arise from that switch. Listener Austin also asks about the common practice of spending money on new equipment to reduce taxable income, even when the business doesn't need the equipment. Scott and Mitchell explain why spending money on equipment you don't need to save on taxes is a bad decision, and why tax planning around write offs is a poor strategy for the small business person in general. Ask Mitchell and Scott a question: Email: show@stupidtaxpod.com Mitchell Baldridge Twitter: @baldridgecpa https://baldridgecpa.ck.page https://baldridgefinancial.com Scott Hambrick Twitter: @hambrickscott IG: @ogscotthambrick https://onlinegreatbooks.com https://scotthambrick.com
Accounting, as Scott Hambrick says, is the scientific method of business. It's a process of data collection and testing hypotheses about how your business works. For Mitchell Baldridge, CPA, accounting is about the numbers -- debits, credits, chart of accounts -- but it's also about so much more. Accounting is not just about tracking the dollars that go in and out of the business, it's about tracking the precursors to those dollars: sales calls, proposals, engagement letters, etc. Properly done, accounting gives you invaluable information about the types of activities that make your business function, and which activities are the most valuable for your business. A business' need for accounting grows with it's revenue and operations. The young man just starting his power washing business doesn't need audited financial statements and complex chart of accounts for tracking income and expenses -- he needs to worry about making sales! When there's money coming in the door, then he can start tracking and making a basic profit and loss statement. For most people starting out, this is not much more complicated than what it says each month on the transaction log on the bank statement. However, as the business begins to grow and employees are added, and more complex projects arise requiring various costs and inputs, a good accounting system becomes critical to ensuring that the business is both cash flow positive and also deploying its resources in the most efficient manner. Starting a business is hard, and there's no shortage of stories in the media bemoaning the high rate of failure for small businesses, the long hours, the lack of benefits. For Mitchell Baldridge and Scott Hambrick, however, small business is the big time, one of the best ways for the common man to build wealth, find autonomy in his work, and align his work with his values. In small business, there is no work/life balance -- work and life become entwined, and the business becomes an extension of the owner. As a result, the owner gets to shape the culture of the company, gets to set the hours, and set boundaries around what he will and won't do. In short, the owner gets to be a real person. Most people can't find this degree of freedom outside of small business! It takes guts, and the ability to tolerate risk, but if you're cut out for it, Mitchell and Scott make a strong case for dropping out of the rat race and tossing your hat into the arena of small business. And as Mitchell argues, you get to take advantage of the best tax deal in America. Get in touch with the hosts! This is a crossover episode in which Thomas joins forces with Scott Hambrick and Karl Schudt from the Online Great Books Podcast, to discuss the classic essay Art and Scholasticism by Jacques Maritain. This episode covers beauty as a transcendental and its role in the fine arts, and intuition as the way we experience artistic beauty. The beauty of a work does not depend on the emotional effects it produces, nor can it be proven by analysis. We experience beauty intellectually, but by intuition rather than by thought. The hosts also digress into arguments over photography as a fine art, Glenn Gould, and craft beers. This is a crossover episode in which Thomas joins forces with Scott Hambrick and Karl Schudt from the Online Great Books Podcast, to discuss the classic essay Art and Scholasticism by Jacques Maritain. Maritain argues for an objective view of both art and the artist, bringing an orderly, scholastic, Thomistic approach to understanding aesthetics. Mirus says, "Maritain gets art better than any other philosopher who came before him in the Western Tradition." For Maritain, art is “a virtue of the practical intellect that aims at making." The virtue or habitus of art, Maritain writes, is not simply an “interior growth of spontaneous life”, but has an intellectual character and involves cultivation and practice. The trio also talks about how fine arts and practical arts have been cloven off. How can we hold them both in esteem without denigrating the other? Scott says, "If we really know what art is then we will be more connected to honest work— that will be a refuge from this intellectual confusion, this metaphysical disgustingness, around us." In this episode, I talk about how valuable it is to delve into some of the “great books” that educated people I’ve known and respected have read, struggled with and discussed. Growing up, my father always talked about a University of Chicago professor with an odd yet memorable name, Mortimer Adler. Decades later, I now understand why my Dad had his own personal library and how many of the titles in it were on the recommended reading list that Adler compiled. What’s more, I talk about how a new program called the Online Great Books Program, and its founder Scott Hambrick, are leading hordes of inquiring, thirsty minds to read these books. Scott Hambrick returns to infuriate probably about half the audience. I wanted Scott's "clear pill" take on our recent "black pill" discussion (in what was supposed to be an Un-iversity-only chat), but we quickly expanded beyond pill heuristics to a reflection on the year and the state of the world. We disagree in several places, as I try to insert optimism where I can, but I also acknowledge that the optimism needs to be focused in the right places. This leads to some examination and autopsy on the so-called liberty movement, politics, and past outreach attempts. We'll also get a running start with a whole history of the pills. * The red pill vs. the blue, a la The Matrix * Different applications of the red pill * The black pill vs. the white pill * why pills are not a good way to categorize and assess individuals Please check out Scott's awesome podcast at Online Great Books. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/cCpqMLBg0Ro Almost one hundred years ago, the great German director Fritz Lang offered us a beautiful yet nightmarish vision of a world strangely similar to our present. Society is unimaginably prosperous yet produces mass misery. There is a sense of an end coming for Babel. Amidst growing class resentment, the Whore of Babylon appears in the form of a machine invented by society’s elites. This wonder of technology parodies and destroys womanhood, manipulating men’s lust and anger, tempting them away from compassion for their fellow man and the patient expectation of a redeemer. Scott Hambrick and Karl Schudt from OnlineGreatBooks.com join the show for an entertaining, thought-provoking discussion of the one work of sci-fi on the Vatican film list—not only of its Biblical, political and technological themes, but also its unforgettable imagery and evocative aesthetic, a combination of Art Deco with German expressionism. We consider the ongoing culture war in the United States of America, how we got here, and what we can do to stop the war on our culture. What are citizens supposed to do when gangs of thugs descend on their neighborhoods? Winter is coming and many of you are looking for indoor projects. Brownell is stocked up with reloading supplies and in many cases, they are running sales and rebates on items you need to reload your own ammunition. Thanks for being a part of SOTG! Wauwatosa Police said they deployed tear gas at least twice late Wednesday into early Thursday after crowds failed to disperse in the suburb outside Milwaukee despite officers declaring an unlawful assembly multiple times. The Catholic Culture Podcast is now in video! Subscribe to our YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwqvyZyc2bpzI-kOYhwrkw While the Catholic Church has condemned Marxism, Communism and socialism from their beginning, an alarming number of those calling themselves Catholic display a sympathy for these ideas: think of America magazine's 2019 essay on “The Catholic Case of Communism”. Even some orthodox Catholic intellectuals seem to think we should mine the writings of Marx for whatever truth might be contained among the rubbish. Aside from the fact that Marx's philosophy represents a war on being itself (in his words, “the ruthless criticism of all that exists”), making it rather difficult to find untainted morsels of truth in his writings, there are other reasons to steer clear. If philosophy is truly the pursuit of wisdom, we should care about the personal lives of philosophers. Marx was a deeply vicious man. He displayed complete contempt for his fellow man, was a virulent racist, despised God and religion, and was an utter hypocrite when it came to money, constantly sponging off his family and acquaintances. Beyond all that, there is the distinct sense of something demonic in Marx's personal life. Those who knew him most intimately consistently described him in demonic terms: His son wrote to him as “my dear devil”, his father suggested that he was “governed by a demon”, and Engels referred to him as a “monster of ten thousand devils”. Marx himself was obsessed with the Devil, writing poems and plays about characters who make pacts with Satan and are resigned to their own damnation. He even told his children an ongoing bedtime story about a man who sold his soul to the devil. (Marx's two daughters would die in suicide pacts with their husbands, who were atheistic revolutionaries like their father-in-law.) In this episode, Paul Kengor, author of The Devil and Karl Marx, discusses this (exhaustively footnoted) evidence of the demonic in Marx's life. What inspired this man with so much hatred that he called for the “ruthless criticism of all that exists”, beginning with religion? Contents [3:03] The scope of The Devil and Karl Marx [10:36] A picture of Marx from those closest to him [15:23] Marx's lifelong “ruthless criticism of all that exists”, beginning with religion [26:33] Satanic themes in Marx's early literary output [30:57] Suicide pacts in Marx's literature and in his children's lives [37:56] Walter Duranty and Aleister Crowley [41:55] Marx's personal behavior around money, family, and friends [47:41] The error of separating philosophy from personal life [52:29] “Just a phase”?: Why Marx's youthful writings are relevant to his later work [55:18] The pedants' denial that Marxism is present in contemporary movements Links Paul Kengor, The Devil and Karl Marx https://www.tanbooks.com/the-devil-and-karl-marx.html Online Great Books opens a new enrollment period on October 13th. Scott Hambrick and Karl Schudt are the hosts of The Online Great Books Podcast. Listen to our conversation about the problems with our political and economic systems and how to fix them.
Catholic theologian Douglas Farrow and Lutheran political scholar Andrew Busch join the show to discuss their recent essays on the coronavirus lockdown, and assess the reasons and prospects for civil disobedience. In “The Health-First Heresy,” Farrow examines the responses of Catholic and other Christian leaders to the state's orders to cease corporate worship. Whatever concessions the Church may make to the state as to the circumstances under which worship is held, she may not simply suspend her proper activities indefinitely until the state gives the word. In “The Limits of Expertise,” Busch assesses where “following the experts” (which ones? in what fields?) has gotten us so far and points out the dangers of pretending to replace statesmanship with expertise. Contents [8:30] The “health-first heresy”; the priority of the soul over the body [17:29] Making prudential judgments vs. suspending corporate worship indefinitely; how much can the Church concede to the state in matters of worship? [23:37] We have to realize the world is run by people who have contempt for religious worship [32:09] Areas of overlap between Church and state authority [40:08] The modern desire to be in complete control surpasses the desire to avoid suffering [42:58] Religious leaders need to plan for the next pretext to shut down worship [49:56] Listen to—Which scientists? In what fields? [56:30] The track record of the experts [58:56] The legal fallout of accepting lockdowns [62:47] Shifting the goalposts from “flattening the curve” to eliminating all cases [1:04:13] Rule by experts is incompatible with the consent of the governed [1:07:47] Other motives behind lockdown [1:10:29] Why coordinated civil disobedience needs to begin NOW—no waiting for a vaccine [1:21:06] Striking a balance between resisting irrational fear and taking appropriate precautions Links Douglas Farrow, “The Health-First Heresy” https://www.catholicworldreport.com/2020/08/07/the-health-first-heresy/ Andrew Busch, “The Limits of Expertise” https://americanmind.org/essays/the-limits-of-expertise/ Douglas Farrow at Catholic World Report https://www.catholicworldreport.com/author/farrow-douglas/ Andrew Busch at The American Mind https://americanmind.org/author/andrew-busch/ and Claremont Review of Books https://claremontreviewofbooks.com/author/andrew-e-busch/ Episode 56 on Yves Simon's General Theory of Authority https://www.catholicculture.org/commentary/episode-56-vindicating-authority-aquinas-guilbeau-op/ Episode 27 with Online Great Books' Scott Hambrick https://www.catholicculture.org/commentary/episode-27-always-wanted-to-study-great-books-heres-how-youll-actually-follow-through-scott-hambrick/ Online Great Books opens a new enrollment period on October 13th. Scott Hambrick and Karl Schudt from Online Great Books join me to discuss Saul Alinsky's frightening, frustrating, and formidable 1971 book, Rules For Radicals. Most all of us have had the “my first gun” moment in our lives. Some you may be going through the “my first gun” decision process right now. During our SOTG Homeroom from Crossbreed Holsters, Professor Paul considers the entry-level gun and how to encourage people, not discourage them. For our Brownells Bullet Point segment, Paul and Jarrad will take a look at innovation versus imitation. Which one of these ideas is more important? Or, do both imitation and innovation have merit, depending on the situation? Scott Hambrick of Online Great Books is back for part two of the Ideas of Liberty segment. Scott Hambrick, founder of onlinegreatbooks.com, Karl Schudt, and Michelle Hawkins launch this podcast at the only suitable place to start— with a melody. Before tuning in to the podcast, go listen to Brahms' Symphony No. 3. Michelle says, "This particular melody is not repetitive, it takes you on a journey that makes sense. It’s an unfolding of his thought process." Scott adds, "The thought process of the genius is more accessible when it’s music than reading what they’ve written." In listening to Brahms' musical journey, the trio asks questions like: What is melody? Are you able to talk about sound without metaphor? Can music itself just be its own end? If you have grown up on pop music, you may have not been exposed to these melodic sentences. This is a chance to expand your exposure and what you can delight in. Why would you not want to have more things that are beautiful in your life?

To say that Scott Hambrick is many things is an understatement. He started a data storage company that he ran for close to 20 years before recently selling it. He's a Starting Strength coach and online coach for Barbell Logic He also is Co-Host of the Barbell Logic podcast.https://barbell-logic.com/barbell-logic-podcast-episodes/He is also the founder of https://onlinegreatbooks.com/team/and the co-host of the podcast https://onlinegreatbooks.com/onlinegreatbooks-podcast/Scott has been an avid reader and autodidact his entire life. After pursuing a science education at University he entered the world of small business and operates Data Storage, Inc., a successful enterprise in Tulsa, OK.Scott and Charity, his wife of 20 years, homeschool their two daughters. After getting some serious skin in the educational game, Scott became more rigorous about his own continuing education. This interest lead to the creation of OGB. Scott hopes to introduce tens of thousands of people to the great books of the western world through this new platform.A snippet of Scott's bio from his website:A long time ago I realized I was fat. I was out of breath and winded after tying my shoe laces. That very day I hired a personal trainer and commenced to lose the weight. After 3 years and thousands of dollars, I lost 53 pounds. I was 6’2″ tall and weighed 179. After all that, I was skinny fat. I lost 53 pounds of fat AND muscle.Bosu ball work, muscle confusion BS and typical NASM, NSCA, ACE, ACSM personal trainer work didn’t make me strong. I could do some planks, but I couldn’t bench press 165 pounds. I had never even attempted a squat or a deadlift. I wanted to be able to eat more food and I wanted to look better. I knew the “trainer” route wasn’t going to get me there. I had already given that experiment 3 years.I launched an educational initiative for myself. I set out to find out how people get strong. I knew there were strong people. How in the hell did they do it? I found the answer. They do it with barbells After more research and trial and error I found that the Starting Strength Basic Barbell Training method absolutely worked for me. After 6 weeks on starting strength I was stronger at age 38 than I had ever been in my life. I was convinced. My wife and I started training together and in an effort to do the best possible job of training in the safest possible way, I began studying the craft of barbell training, form, coaching, exercise physiology, mechanics, and more. Soon, I was interning as a strength coach under Matt Reynolds at Reynolds Strong and later after he founded Barbell Logic Online Coaching, the best online coaching service in the world. In December of 2016 I passed the platform coaching test at Wichita Fall Athletic Club and in January of 2017 I passed the written exam and became a Starting Strength Coach, an SSC. I chose this because the Starting Strength method is the most complete, most efficient means to get a new athlete very strong, very fast, regardless of their age. I relinquished that credential on July 31, 2019.Charity and I love to apply our expertise in the training of young folks who are unhappy with theSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=ZV837Q7N62W36&source=url)
In the second installment of the series, Scott Hambrick and Karl Schudt continue their discussion of Tolkien’s magic in The Lord of the Rings. The two talk about the problem of evil in this Homeric story, what the good life actually looks like, models of hope we see in many of the characters, the unyielding power of friendship, language’s captivating ability to transmit culture, and so much more. Not only is The Lord of the Rings a monumental work of a single intellect, but it’s also so expertly integrated with foreshadowing, world-building, new language creation, and anthropology, you’ll feel the pages fly by. Even if you’re not the sort to read fantasy literature, you ought to give LOTR a try. Karl thinks, 300 years from now, if people are still reading Great Books, LOTR will probably be on that list. Do you agree? Tune in to this week’s episode and let us know your thoughts! Scott Hambrick returns to begin a multi-part discussion on learning, as he aspires to be a better Starting Strength coach and a more effective interlocutor at Online Great Books. We begin our discussion with an exploration of the common learning theories practiced in public school and higher education, along with a cost/benefit analysis of each: behaviorism, cognitivism, and (social) constructivism. We also touch on connectivism and mindset theory. In future conversation(s) we'll cover additional behaviors and practices that can greatly enhance both the learning and thing processes, including The 20-Hour Rule, the Six Thinking Hats, the Trivium Method, attributes of self-directed learning and strategies for critical thinking in everyday life. Mr. Mehan's Mildly Amusing Mythical Mammals (M5) is a book of poems intended as an introduction to the liberal arts for children, helping them to grow in self-knowledge, virtue, and the art of charitable rhetoric. It is written in the ancient form of the beast fable, with each of Matthew Mehan's twenty-six alphabetical poems accompanied by a beautiful oil painting by John Folley. In this interview Matthew discusses the book, the role of poetry in aesthetic, moral and spiritual education, and related topics such as the lost social art of memorizing and reciting poems. Scott Hambrick and Karl Schudt discuss Friedrich Nietzsche's book The Joyful Wisdom, Book 3, which contains his infamous proclamation "God is dead." Nietzsche is perhaps best known for his writings about nihilism, the rejection of God and moral principles, or of any notion of meaning in life. From the nihilist's perspective, nothing in the world is real; it's merely a representation of the real, a concept that hearkens back to Plato's Allegory of the Cave. Despite his systematic dismantling of God, religion, and the traditional moral codes of the West, Nietzsche was not an advocate for nihilism but rather viewed it as modern man's essential challenge: to overcome the sense of despair and meaninglessness. Scott Hambrick and Matt Reynolds are entrepreneurs, Starting Strength coaches, and the team behind Barbell-Logic.com. While Barbell Logic primarily focuses on strength training, Scott and Matt also dig into various self-improvement topics; we recently collaborated on an old School Sucks favorite - David Allen's Getting Things Done. I will discuss how my use of GTD has changed since I first implemented it in 2013, including what I have added and subtracted. Matt has has taken a similar approach. We'll also discuss the importance of doing (and occasionally redoing) a "brain dump," the basic GTD workflow, how GTD helps us be more present with ourselves and the people we care about, the importance of context (time and place for work) and the horizons of focus. Reminder! I will be attending G. Edward Griffin's Red Pill Expo June 7th through the 9th in Hartford, CT. Scott Hambrick and Online Great Books member Miles Marco Bennett -- in fact the very first member to join OGB -- discuss Michel de Montaigne's insightful, tongue-in-cheek, and occasionally droll essay Of Cannibals. Montaigne's essay, which appears in a larger collected work of his essays written in the 16th century, describes the author's experience with the native Tupi peoples of Brazil, a vibrant warrior culture that practiced ceremonial cannibalism of their enemies. Montaigne draws comparisons between these strong, swarthy people and the barbarians of medieval Europe, praising their "natural" way of life and value system which prized strength and valor. He also notes how their loose governance -- led by people with the most strength and force of ams -- emerged naturally from their values and habits, as opposed to the contrived government and value systems proposed in Plato's Republic. In this way Montaigne rebuts traditional Western philosophy and impugns its figureheads, showing disdain for philosophers who "know better" and would see their way of life imposed on society by an organized government. Montaigne is, in a sense, the people's philosopher, and shows a deference to the common man which is both charming, genuine, and more intellectually honest than most colonial accounts of the "noble savages." Online Great Books founder Scott Hambrick and seminar leader Emmet Penney tackle the first scientific work on the podcast, Euclid's Elements. The Elements are a collection of treatises, postulates, and propositions that ultimately drive toward important mathematical concepts such as the Pythagorean theorem and the theory of numbers, i.e. integers, divisibility, prime numbers. Everyone who has attended American public school has heard of these concepts, and their mention likely dredges up memories of endless, boring, rote work about triangles and algebra. Indeed school teaches the formulas, but it does not teach Euclid, who compiled numerous propositions form earlier mathematicians and weaved them into a thoughtful, cogently argued work about the nature of geometry and mathematics. Studying Euclid prompts the question: are these concepts discovered or invented? Does mathematics represent a fundamental truth of the universe, or does it merely describe the truth? And that's why we study Euclid and other formative scientists and mathematicians at Online Great Books; they prompt us to consider the nature of truth and how the things we are taught in school came to be. It's quite a philosophical exercise. Yet philosophy and science exist in diametric opposition, at least in today's age. Emmet points out a difference between the practice of science (and the technological fruit it bears) and scientism, the faith in science as a diviner of absolute truth. Reading Euclid, he argues, shows us the deep interconnection between science and philosophy, and leads us to a deeper understanding of the truth. You can find Emmet on Twitter as Emmet Martin Penney. You can read some of his written work at: Popula Paste Magazine
Scott Hambrick interviews podcaster, author, former test prep educator, and education contrarian Brett Veinoitte about the rapidly changing role of school and, particularly, secondary school. As the recent scandal involving celebrities paying bribes to obtain university admissions for their children has revealed, college has become so ingrained as a symbol of status and opportunity that an entire industry has sprung up to facilitate the admission of subpar students. Meanwhile, the costs of college steadily rise, in both dollars and time. Brett offers a history of schooling, tracing the modern public school system we are familiar with back to the Prussian educational reforms in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The Prussian system groomed common-born children for military service by establishing free, taxpayer-supported schools with a basic curriculum of technical skills needed in a modernizing world (such as reading and writing). The curriculum attempted to impose a strong sense of national identity and a strict ethos of duty, sobriety and discipline. These traits linger in our contemporary school system -- the bells dividing class times into regular schedules, the teachers reprimanding students to remain silent until called upon. Even the hierarchy of the school resembles something militaristic, with approximately platoon-sized classrooms, led by teachers, grouped under assistant principals, themselves guided by a principal and her staff of advisors. None of these features was implemented to develop critical thinkers possessed of the skills to challenge authorities, status quo, or paradigms. Yet, for a time the system worked, and produced a workforce more suitable to the factories, assembly lines, and schedules of the new industrial world. Now that this industrial world is undergoing rapid change once again, graduates find themselves without the skills to find meaningful work. This disconnect has extended to secondary education as well, and with the cost of college education rising to astronomical levels, the value of a degree has plummeted. Nevertheless, the myth that college is a golden ticket to opportunity and prosperity persists, with very real costs to the young people that acquire debt and delay families in search of the golden ticket. Brett and Scott hope to change that through their businesses. Follow Brett Venoitte at the School Sucks Project and make sure to subscribe to his School Sucks Podcast while you're there! Brett McKay of Art of Manliness fame joins Online Great Books owner Scott Hambrick to discuss Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, a narrative poem best known by the titles of its three constituent parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Dante's tale blends Christian theology and human reason, exploring the nature of sin and redemption. Virgil, the pre-Christian author of The Aeneid, serves as Dante's (the character) guide through the Hell and Purgatory as well as a symbol of human reason. Meanwhile, Dante's childhood crush and self-described "perfect woman" Beatrice guides him through Heaven. Along the way Dante the author paints a picture of Hell that informs modern depictions to this day: fire, brimstone, lurid and gory punishments.
Many people want to study the great books of the western world in a group setting, but are unable to study at a Great Books college like St. John's, and it's not easy to find people willing to commit to read and meet to discuss the books regularly. I was in that club until I found a new company called Online Great Books. It provides both the books and the people to discuss them with via video conferencing software, all on a schedule that normal, busy folks can keep up with. I want to let people in on the fun I've been having, so I invited OGB founder Scott Hambrick to join me on the show. Scott Hambrick is a home educating parent, entrepreneur, strength coach and the creator (Reader In Chief) of OnlineGreatBooks.com. He returns to discuss the power of questions in the Great Conversation, how to read philosophy, and what the hell is going on out there. Can Philosophical Engagement Bring Serenity In the Current Year? Scott and I run through some current events including Covington, AOC/Trump - I'm realizing the media has decayed faster than I have been able to keep up with it - how does this work fit into our current world? - How to maintain calm and rationality and in a hysterical irrational world - Prioritizing the pursuit of truth while so many are willing to abandon it The Power of Questions Scott discusses the role of the moderator in group discussions at Online Great Books. Good questions are open-ended. They are not pointed or leading. A good interlocutor asks honest questions and requests the same from the group, without attempting to teach or profess. Some examples: 1. Why do people continue to read this book? There are lots of books from all periods of human history, but what makes thisbook so important? For instance, why is the Iliadand the Odysseyso seminal in Greek literature, instead of Prometheus Bound? 2. Why was this book written? 3. What can we learn about human nature from reading this book? 4. Has human nature changed since this book was written? Are people the same now as they were at the time of writing? 5. How did this book change the course of thought in history? How To read Philosophy What do these books still have to tell us in the 21st century? - discovering and understanding the hidden assumptions and biases of the author - Adler's childlike curiosity approach; bringing a blank slate mind to a text - why it's often better to avoid reading extensive biographies or commentaries on philosophers, before reading their works - We discuss Plato and his Seventh Letter as an example for this process Join the Great Conversation! Scott Hambrick and a group of the Online Great Books seminar leaders tackle Plato's The Meno, a short but endlessly deep work attempting to unearth the meaning - or even existence - of virtue. Written as a Socratic dialogue between Socrates and Meno, a young Thessalian noble, the Meno is both provocative and frustratingly inconclusive. Virtue comes from the Greek arete, meaning "excellence" or more generally, "fitness for purpose." Thus, to arrive at an understanding of virtue, one must first understand the nature and purpose of man. Modern thinking often leans toward objective, scientific descriptions of things, i.e. describing what a thing is. The Meno pushes us to not just think about what man is, but what man should be. The group ponders what a society built on Socratic dialogue might look like. On matters of justice, modern society often pushes for action -- what we must do to fix a (perceived) problem. The Socratic society might first question whether there is a problem, and, more importantly, whether action would change or fix a problem anyway.
Every homeschooler understands that reading is essential. However, sometimes we may not know what our children should be reading. Or, perhaps we know what they should read but we don’t understand the essential themes and ideas of a piece of great literature. At Online Great Books you’ll find a community that will help you understand […]
There are conversations between friends. Conversations between family. And conversations in the media. But did you know there's also been a conversation going on between writers, thinkers, and philosophers for a couple thousand years? What's been called "the Great Conversation" refers to the way the authors of the so-called "Great Books" have for millennia been referencing and riffing on the work of their predecessors, and this dialogue is one you can not only eavesdrop on yourself, but join in. My guest today founded an online community that helps people take part in the Great Conversation. His name is Scott Hambrick, and he's both a Starting Strength barbell lifting coach, and the creator of Online Great Books, a program which helps people read and discuss the classic texts of Western literature. Today on the show Scott and I discuss where the idea of the Great Books came from, why they're worth reading, and how to read them. Along the way, we offer sample questions to think about when you're reading these texts, as well as mini models of exchanges you can have with others about them. This show will likely inspire you to pick up a copy of The Iliad or something by Plato. Get the show notes at aom.is/onlinegreatbooks.
Our sometimes curmudgeonly but always thoughtful co-host Scott Hambrick shares today some of the things that bring value to his life, and some of things that rob his life of value. And, well, as it turns out it's not things at all which bring him value, but rather people and experiences. As he says, he tends to view himself as a project. People have the unique capacity for introspection, development, and change. As Socrates famously says "the unexamined life is not worth living." Scott derives value from the activities and experiences which allow him to examine his life, gain deeper understanding of the human experience, and refine his values and personal code of ethics. Strength training fits into this idea well. In addition to being a lifter, Scott is also a voracious reader, regularly tackling challenging literature. This practice has refined his core values, as well as his ability to think critically about problems. He also values the time spent with his family highly -- even citing his family as the primary motivator for what he does. As Scott says, the best and worst things you'll ever do... you'll do with your wife. His marriage sums up the breadth of his human experience. Scott has rarely regretted the money he's spent on experts, whether it's for coaching, music lessons, or counseling. While things tend to fade - either literally as they break or wear out, or figuratively as your tastes change throughout your life - experiences and skills can last you throughout your life. The notebooks Scott mentions he uses for note taking are Moleskin Cahier notebooks. They are compact yet big enough to take notes on long books, like Homer's Iliad. They also have stitched pages so they can hold up to the abuse of frequent note-taking. And they're cheap!
