Discussion Opening April 25th and closing May 10th at the Pumphouse in Calgary, Morpheus Theatre presents an adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan's The McAdo, directed by Sean Anderson. Kyle sits down with Sean to talk about what this production means to him given that this is Morpheus' 30th season and his favorite of all of the G&S operettas. Tickets: https://www.morpheustheatre.ca/?page_id=7805 About the Show: It's the show you love, in a brand new setting! The Mikado has been moved to the highlands of Scotland and becomes The McAdo. The McAdo, or “The Town of Ballydew”, a refreshing take on Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado, featuring all the music and dialogue you know and love, but with a wee Scottish twist… This new production relocates the beloved comic opera from Japan to a fictional clan in the Scottish Highlands, where warriors and clansfolk combat love, death and obscure laws. With joyous songs, Scottish dances and Highland-inspired dress, this is The Mikado as you've never seen it before. In this adaptation by Gilbert & Sullivan Austin, Gilbert's libretto and Sullivan's score has been kept virtually intact, while the costumes will reflect the Scottish moors. It's a farcical tale of a wand'ring minstrel, a cowardly executioner, an iron-fisted ruler, and some of the greatest songs in musical theatre!

The world loves Scotch whisky. Forty-four bottles are exported every single second – that's 1.4bn a year. On this week's The Factory Next Door, we head to the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula in the Scottish Highlands to learn what it takes to build a distillery. Number 31 on our list of the greatest products we make in Britain is The Single Malt. Alex Bruce, Managing Director of the Ardnamurchan Distillery, tells us why he's not worried about US tariffs, explains why he does worry about dust, and reveals the reason they put the distillery in such a remote location.   We also see a giant underground bunker, consider whisky Jenga, and learn how the whisky is bringing families back to the area. Say hello on Instagram @thefactorynextdoor The Factory Next Door is supported by AVEVA, a leader in industrial intelligence.   Sign up to their bi-weekly newsletter about manufacturing here: www.aveva.com/factory

This week Nick talks to Judith MacKenzie. Judith joined Downing in October 2009, bringing with her extensive experience in venture capital and fund management. Prior to this, she was a partner at Acuity Capital, where she managed AIM-listed VCT and IHT investments, as well as a small-cap activist fund. Before Acuity, Judith spent nine years as a senior investment manager at Aberdeen Asset Management Growth Capital, where she co-managed five Aberdeen VCTs, focusing on technology and media investments across both public and private companies. In 2010, she founded Downing Fund Managers, the boutique investment division of Downing LLP. Judith currently serves as Chair of the Quoted Companies Alliance and holds active board roles in both private and public sectors.Nick and Judith discuss her journey into finance, inspired by working in her parents' small businesses in the Scottish Highlands. Her early exposure to economics and investing sparked a lifelong interest in smaller companies. She discusses her career progression from stockbroking to fund management, emphasising her focus on UK micro-cap and smaller companies through Downing's IHT (Inheritance Tax) service. Judith explains the appeal of AIM-listed firms due to their tax benefits and potential for strong returns, highlighting a hands-on, diligent investment approach that mirrors private equity standards. She identifies three key types of companies she targets: value compounders, self-help businesses, and balance sheet leaders—mentioning Ramsdens, James Latham, and Flowtech as examples. Judith critiques the negative narrative around AIM, advocating for its role in supporting entrepreneurial growth and job creation. She expresses hope for a shift back to active investing and UK-focused capital deployment, especially in light of current global economic uncertainties and US-centric fund flows.  Judith's book choice was:Vassal State: How America Runs Britain by Angus HantonJudith's music choice was:Human by The KillersThis content is issued by Zeus Capital Limited (“Zeus”) (Incorporated in England & Wales No. 4417845), which is authorised and regulated in the United Kingdom by the Financial Conduct Authority (“FCA”) for designated investment business, (Reg No. 224621) and is a member firm of the London Stock Exchange. Firefighters across the country have been tackling more wildfires this week - from the Mourne mountains in Northern Ireland to the Scottish Highlands and North Yorkshire moors. These fires in rural areas are difficult to fight. In the Mournes more than 140 fires have been reported in the past few days and firefighters say most were started deliberately. Various countryside organisations, including the Countryside Alliance and the CLA alongside farming unions have been raising awareness of the dangers of wildfires and ways of preventing them. The Ulster Farmers Union is calling for more grazing and controlled burning in some protected areas to reduce the risks. We're focusing on farmed fish this week and salmon really dominates this sector. It's not without its critics who say production is at the expense of the environment and fish welfare. However the industry in Scotland says its continuing to change and improve. We visit an island site owned by Norwegian fish farmer MOWI which believes that farming in deeper more remote waters will help solve some of the problems. The first asparagus of the season is one vegetable that's widely anticipated and valued and one Scottish farm has found a way of edging ahead of most of the others by making use of redundant fruit polytunnels.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Episode 517 - Carolyn Nicholson - Stories From the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands - A land full of fairies, witches, water monsters, ghosts, and other supernatural creaturesCarolyn was born in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, worked in the health information management field, taught in post-secondary education, and was in ministry in The United Church of Canada. After her retirement, she began researching her ancestors; after many years she discovered her Nicolson ancestors were from the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands, and she began to visit Skye with her sisters. Skye, she learned, was always full of fairies, witches, water monsters, ghosts, and other supernatural creatures. As a project for her small writers' group, she wrote a 1,200-word story about fairies, witches, etc., then decided to play some more with what she had written. In time, this became a larger and larger story. Carolyn decided to take a course offered by the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia on how to write a children's story. Then, daring to believe the story might be worth publishing, she contacted OC Publishing and the rest, as they say, is history.Wishes sometimes do come true, and Carolyn's wish would be that this little story might bring happiness and pleasure to children and that they might come to love little Magaidh and her friends and family as much as she does. Book: The Last Witch on SkyeThe Ban the Witches and Fairies (BW&F) Party has chased all the supernatural creatures out of the Isle of Skye. Only Magaidh, a young witch, remains, hiding in a castle disguised as a cat. But she and the Queen of the Fairies have a plan to rescue the Fairy Flag, allowing the fairies and Magaidh to return to Skye. As Magaidh resumes her business, Spells, Inc., she thinks about getting revenge on the BW&F Party, but the Fairy Queen suggests that peace would be a better plan. While Magaidh considers which it will be, peace or revenge, her business allows her to help the people of Skye with love potions and spells to reverse the troublesome effects of fairy arrows. She and her two fairy friends, Sean and Iain, go on many adventures together, including rescuing a baby Welsh dragon; dealing with Big Blue Donald, a ghost; and befriending a baby water horse they name Calum. In the process, Magaidh finds out why she is different from her siblings, who force her to choose revenge!https://carolynnicholson.ca/https://ocpublishing.ca/carolyn-nicholsonSupport the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Gibbons, The Elton John Band, Steve Lukather, Bill Champlin, Tower of Power, and many more. The Stylistics announce their first new album in almost two decades titled "FALLING IN LOVE WITH MY GIRL," which will be released worldwide on February 21, 2025. The soul legends known for their iconic hits, "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)," "You Are Everything," "You Make Me Feel Brand New," and more, earning them 5 Gold singles and 3 Gold albums, will bring audiences their first new single from the 21-track album "Yes, I Will," featuring Shania Twain, on February 14. "FALLING IN LOVE WITH MY GIRL," produced by Tom Cridland and Executive Produced by Deborah Cridland, will feature a who's who of legendary and noted artists who collaborated on the album alongside Twain: Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones, Gene Simmons of KISS, The Elton John Band (including Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone), Bill Champlin of Chicago, Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top, Steve Lukather of Toto, Tower of Power, Ray Parker, Jr., Jay Graydon, Justin Hawkins of The Darkness, The Real Thing, Nathan East and Carly Paoli. For "Yes, I Will," Twain had been invited to sing on one of the tracks already written, but she had in mind the perfect song for the album that she had co-written with Nathan East, (to which Tom Cridland contributed), that was a soulful fit for The Stylistics. Ray Parker Jr., Steve Lukather and East performed on the track that was the last song recorded for the collection, and is the first new track in 17 years to be released by the legendary group. Says Twain, "I'm so happy that this song I wrote 'Yes, I Will' has found a home on The Stylistics album. That is just so exciting. It's a special song that came together on one special day at my home where I was hanging out with some friends and musicians. So I think it turned out great and I'm just really excited to share it with the whole world." Airrion Love from The Stylistics adds, "I fell in love with Shania Twain the first time I heard 'You're Still the One' - a great song that I still love. When we heard there might be a chance to do something with her we said, "Hell yeah!"" The Stylistics' original members Airrion Love and Herb Murrell, together with Jason Sharp who joined the group in 2011, recorded their vocals at Spice House Sound in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and at Wright Way Studios in Baltimore, Maryland. Tom Cridland arranged and recorded the background vocals in the Scottish Highlands and at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The Elton John Band including Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone laid down the instrumental tracks at the Record Plant in Hollywood, California. "FALLING IN LOVE WITH MY GIRL" was the last album ever made at the legendary recording studio. Most of the songs were written by Tom Cridland together with Anthony King of Blackpool and Anthony's wife, Fiona Shaw. Two tracks were written by Airrion Love, "Sad Tomorrows" and "I Get A Feeling." Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

We've got a cracking Listener Prescription special for you, and let us tell you, it's a real corker. You wouldn't believe the range of questions we receive, and this week's episode of On the Scent podcast really showcases the breadth of the people and feelings, places and personas that fragrance can conjure. From scenting an Irish adventure and matching the weather, to choosing a fragrance to wear for a loved one's funeral, and even creating a whole new perfume persona for reinvention – our listeners never fail to surprise us with their diverse and deeply touching requests. We're diving deep into how fragrance can comfort us during difficult times, enhance travel experiences, and even help us embody our most fabulous selves. It's a rollercoaster of emotions and scents, and we can't wait for you to join us on this olfactory journey. So, pop in those earbuds and let us guide you through our suggestions – and let us know any scents that spring to mind in answer, too! Here are the questions we answer & scents we suggest: For Ashley: @cloonkeen Báinín - Meaning 'little white', evokes the softness of ivory wool, embodying innocence and plushness in a timeless garment. A delightful blend of freshness and warmth, it carries hints of coastal gorse, dewy herbs, and petrichor after a cloudburst. (Named after the homespun wool used in Aran jumpers and tweed jackets worn by Irish fishermen for generations). @cloonkeen Roísín Dubh – A mystical Irish rose, Róisín Dubh blends Damascena rose with dry paper and inky patchouli. The scent deepens into smoky incense, black pepper and tobacco absolute, creating a brooding base.Named after a rebellious 16th-century song, Róisín Dubh has become a cherished symbol for Irish writers. @cloonkeen Castaña – A delectable haze of singed yet creamy chestnuts and golden caramel unfolds into a voluptuous blend of Haïtian vetiver, cardamom, and red pepper.Enriched by delicate cassia absolute and lush jasmine blossoms, it's a masterpiece. @laboratorioolfattivo Nun – Nun evokes the primordial waters of Ancient Egypt, symbolising rebirth and the Sun God. Waves of citrus and pear wash to a surging, luminous heart of lotus, jasmine, and ylang-ylang, worshipped by a woody, musky base. @memo.paris Irish Leather – Irish Leather blends a leather accord with the fresh essence of juniper berries and bitingly green mate. Featuring a fizz of pink pepper, herbaceous clary sage, iris & tonka on a smoked amber base, it pays homage to the Irish roots of Memo Paris' co-founder. @perfumerhlondon Rainwood – Capturing the essence of the (okay, Scottish) Highlands with grounded beauty, snapped stalks of galbanum and elemi coalesce with clean pepper and droplets of myrrh; all grounded by wet, woody juniper and cedar and patchouli leaves. For Becca Monet: Pocket-sized, calming and strengthening roll-on scents for wellbeing from @aromatherapyassociates, @neomwellbeing, @tisseranduk, or @marksandspencer. For Hannah (& ‘Glory Magnolia'!): @jovoymayfair @jovoyparis Psychédélique – A groovy time capsule, this scent struts its stuff with the swagger of a '70s rock god. Patchouli takes centre stage, belting out woody notes with the gusto of a Woodstock headliner. It's the olfactory equivalent of a vintage vinyl, crackling with retro charm and rebellious...

This week we take a look at the concept of coincidences in true crime... Our first case takes us to the Aviemore Station Hotel in the Scottish Highlands. When fire ripped through the hotel in 1950, it ended in tragedy. The community was rocked to its core. And when history repeated itself forty five years later, people were left asking whether this was merely a coincidence, or whether something more sinister was at play... Our second case takes us to the bustling Birmingham suburb of Erdington. In 1974 a 20-year-old nurse went missing in eerily similar circumstances to a previous missing person's case more than a hundred years hence... Could it be that the two cases were related? "Lookaftering" Well, we talked about doing the thing and the fact of the matter is, the British-born Vashti Bunyan started doing the thing pretty early. In the 1960s, while studying at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford, Bunyan was expelled for focussing more on making music than on drawing. So she went home and started making music. When her mother's hip actress friend got the 19 year old Bunyan a face to face with the Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham, he was properly charmed and handed her the Stones track "Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind" to record. And so she did. Backed by her own song "I Want To Be Alone," "Some Things" featured Jimmy Page on guitar, but it didn't turn as many heads as Bunyan had hoped. She did another single, sang on a Twice As Much album, and appeared in a documentary about swinging London. So the ball was rolling. Bunyan and her fella hit the road in search of an artistic community and she ended up Holland, The Scottish Highlands and the Cumbrian Mountains. Her journey informed the songs for her debut album Just Another Diamond Day, which is fabulous, but was too fabulous for the time it was released. Look, sometimes the world just has to catch up and it did. But it took 30 years. Bunyan was so disappointed by Diamond Day not really troubling the charts, she hung up her guitar, lived in the Scottish Borders in cottages occupied by the Incredible String Band and raised three kids, putting her music career on mothballs, seemingly for good. The world was quietly catching up however, and Diamond Day had sneakily become a cult classic. It was re-released in 2000 and with Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart championing her work, Bunyan was introduced to a whole new generation, who adored her. Since then, she's recorded two more albums--Lookaftering and Heartleap--and she's appeared on albums by Banhart and Animal Collective, she appeared at London's Royal Festival Hall with The Heritage Orchestra () as part of Massive Attack's Meltdown (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meltdown_(festival)), she wrote a memoir, and was the subject of a full-length documentary. So she's back. Yes. No. I mean, sort of. But I also mean yes. Confused? You won't be for long. To commemorate Lookaftering's 20th anniversary, DiCristina Records is releasing an expanded edition of Bunyan's sophomore album and it's packed with demos, live stuff, fabulous liner notes, lyric sheets and paintings by Bunyan's daughter. Bunyan's music is hard to classify--it's bedroom pop that isn't pop and wasn't recorded in a bedroom but it's got this hushed and fractured quality that's filled with mysterious power. This conversation is a real treat and in the end, there's an unexpected walk across the rooftops that's really cool. It's time for Bizarre News for January 2025! We have four exciting and strange news stories for you this month.Story 1 - Bigfoot Sighting (Mansfield, Ohio): A man named Andrew Baum and his stepfather reported seeing a Sasquatch while setting up a tree stand on their farmland near Interstate 71 in December 2024. The BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) investigated and found the witness credible, though they questioned whether it might have been a human walking across the field rather than a Sasquatch.Story 2 - Alien Life Search Advancement: Scientists are increasingly optimistic about discovering extraterrestrial life due to technological advancements like the James Webb Space Telescope and the $100 million Breakthrough Listen project. Previous search efforts have been minimal (equivalent to scooping an 8-ounce glass from Earth's oceans), but new technology is expected to dramatically increase our ability to detect potential signs of life in space.Story 3 - Haunted Hotel for Sale (Ballinger, Texas): The Old Park Hotel, an 1886 two-story building known for paranormal activity including full-body apparitions and cold spots, is being put up for sale by its current owners Connie and Dan Lefebvre. The hotel, which has been featured on the Travel Channel, has attracted paranormal investigators from around the world, and the owners are seeking buyers who will continue operating it as a paranormal venue.Story 4 - Haunted Strathpeffer Pavilion (Scotland): A Victorian-era building in the Scottish Highlands has gained a reputation for being haunted, with reports of shadowy figures and unexplained phenomena. Recent paranormal investigators using specialized equipment like EMF detectors and spirit boxes claimed to have received clear responses through their devices, including being told to leave the balcony area.Want two more bonus news stories? In an old schoolroom in the Scottish Highlands, sculptor Michael Visocchi is working on Commensalis, a huge work that will be installed thousands of miles away, in Grytviken, an abandoned whaling station on the Antarctic island of South Georgia. Whaling ships and equipment were taken Grytviken and assembled there. Now it is an industrial scrapyard; ships rust on the shore, huge tanks decay and millions of left over rivets remain. Visocchi was struck by the similarity of shape of these rivets and the bumps of the barnacles on the bodies of living whales.Visocchi talks to presenter Julian May as he works on this project which is challenging in so many ways. South Georgia has no permanent population, so is a public artwork appropriate?
