WSTR Galactic Public Access: Queen Jamilla, Star Wars News, and Convention Rants This episode starts with a deep look at Queen Jamilla, a brief but meaningful Naboo leader in Attack of the Clones, and uses her to explore Naboo politics, democracy, and how Star Wars makes even tiny characters feel important. Todd also covers a few Star Wars news items, then wraps with personal updates on Fortnite, Fan Expo Chicago, and the challenges of crowded convention venues. Key topics Todd explains who Queen Jamilla is A Naboo monarch with less than two minutes of screen time, but enough presence to spark a long character discussion. He walks through her role as Queen Amidala's successor and her place in the prequel-era timeline. Why Queen Jamilla matters despite limited screen time Todd argues that even minor political figures help Star Wars feel like a lived-in galaxy. He connects Jamilla's short appearance to the larger sense of Naboo continuity and political realism. Naboo politics and democratic idealism Jamilla's line about keeping faith in the Republic becomes the core theme of the segment. Todd contrasts her trust in institutions with Amidala's more experienced, harder-earned political perspective. Jamilla's relationship to Padmé Amidala Todd reads Jamilla as someone seeking advice and guidance from a respected predecessor. Their interaction is framed as mutual trust, with Padmé representing experience and Jamilla representing idealism. The threat of war in the background The discussion touches on the growing separatist crisis and the early signs of the Clone Wars. Todd views Jamilla as somewhat sheltered from the galaxy's larger collapse, which shapes her optimism. Naboo's social structure and leadership Todd questions the age and selection of Naboo's queens, noting the youth of both Padmé and Jamilla. He suggests Naboo could have benefited from more integration, especially between humans and Gungans. Why Star Wars includes brief political characters Todd says these characters show that life continues outside the main heroes. He connects this to how the franchise builds scale, realism, and background texture. News of the week: Star Wars: Starfighter Todd covers reporting that the new film was inspired by The Outsiders. He highlights the gritty, loyalty-driven tone and the pairing of a rugged older lead with a younger companion. News of the week: canceled Mandalorian versus Jedi game He reacts to the leaked gameplay and fan disappointment over another canceled Star Wars title. Todd compares it to other scrapped projects and laments how often promising games never release. News of the week: Ewan McGregor wants back in Todd discusses McGregor pitching ideas for more Obi-Wan content while on the set of Ahsoka. He suggests flashback storytelling could be a smart way to bring Obi-Wan into future projects. Cantina Chat: Fortnite and Fan Expo Chicago Todd talks about collecting 118 sprites in Fortnite and enjoying the new season called Override. He also shares a strong opinion that the Rosemont Convention Center is overcrowded and not as good as C2E2. AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY JUST GOT EVEN BIGGER — AND DOCTOR DOOM LOOKS ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING! #AvengersDoomsday #DoctorDoom #RobertDowneyJr #D23 #TrailerReaction #MarvelStudios #MCU #FantasticFour #XMen #ReelRejects Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey react to the brand-new Avengers: Doomsday trailer revealed at D23, featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom and a massive collision between the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Wakandans, and more. Directed by Anthony & Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Oppenheimer) as Doctor Doom, Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian) as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby (The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning) as Sue Storm, Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Extraction) as Thor, Patrick Stewart (X-Men, Star Trek: Picard) as Professor X, and Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings, X-Men) as Magneto. After watching the new D23 footage, Aaron and John break down Doctor Doom's ominous introduction, his green eyes, ceremonial armor, devastated surroundings, and the trailer's heavy focus on his history with the Fantastic Four. They react to Reed Richards confronting Doom, the emotional hints surrounding Doom's tragic past, Thor being blasted away with seemingly little effort, and the sheer power and presence Robert Downey Jr. brings to Marvel's next major villain. The conversation also explores the massive scope of Avengers: Doomsday, including appearances from Professor X, Magneto, Gambit, Wakandan heroes, Sentinels, and the larger multiversal conflict bringing multiple Marvel worlds together. Aaron and John discuss how the darker visual language surrounding Doom contrasts with the retro-futuristic world of the Fantastic Four, why the Reed and Doom relationship may provide the emotional core of the movie, and whether Doomsday could ultimately reset the MCU timeline heading into Avengers: Secret Wars. A Welsh dub of Star Wars: A New Hope? FINALLY!  Never stop never stopping making fun of the fact that the Ahsoka show had the balls to go 4 years in between seasons   “Remember Furbies? I miss those little guys” -said no one ever. But Disney Parks won't  let that stop them from breeding these unholy Furby-Ewok hybrids. Bae (aka Ewan McGregor) and Anne Hathaway are out here promoting their new non-Jurassic-Park dinosaur movie, but the real news is Bae still wants to do more Obi-Wan.  The Mando movie won the week on Video on Demand, but that victory is equivalent to being the best shot in a platoon of stormtroopers. But this dude claiming to be the CEO of Disney says a win is a win. Starfighter keeps on Starfighting, this time in the MCU.  “I can't wait to watch Robot Chicken at the Lucas Museum,” said someone who only kinda browsed this article. Third Movies and Army of Darkness

    Bad Dads Film Review

This week on Bad Dads Film Review, we complete our accidental trilogy of “third things.” After covering Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the midweek show, we turn to Army of Darkness, Sam Raimi's third Evil Dead film, and use that as an excuse to dig into the noble, messy and often suspicious art of the threequel. There is no formal intro this week — time has apparently been attacked by Deadites — so we open with a catch-up on what everyone has been watching. Reegs has been busy with Backrooms, Obsession, Disclosure Day and Apple TV's Cape Fear, which gets a recommendation so long as you know going in that it is extremely ridiculous. Sidey has finally finished The Pit, finding the second season weaker than the first but still worth the time, and has also watched Backrooms and started The Mandalorian. Dan has finished series five of Slow Horses, which he continues to push as an absolute treat, and has also seen The Odyssey at the cinema, where three hours apparently went by surprisingly quickly. That leads us into the usual wandering preamble: 4DX screenings with shaking seats, water and wind; panoramic side-screen cinema formats; the Sphere in Vegas; Sidey somehow still not having made it to IMAX; Spider-Man: Brand New Day and big cinema opening weekends; Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal on Hot Ones; and the general horror of people getting overconfident with hot sauce before reality arrives in liquid form. The Top 5 this week is third films in a franchise, which gives us one of those lists where genuinely great films sit shoulder to shoulder with absolute nonsense. Dan opens strongly with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, a film that swept the Oscars so hard it practically brought its own broom. Sidey goes for Toy Story 3, remembering Lotso, Spanish Buzz, the daycare escape, the furnace sequence and the emotional finality of Andy giving up his toys. Reegs makes a spirited defence of The Matrix Revolutions, arguing that its uneasy truce ending and refusal to give everyone a simple victory has aged better than its reputation suggests. From there, we move through Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with Sean Connery, River Phoenix and the Holy Grail; The Bourne Ultimatum, which Sidey remembers as peak Jason Bourne closure and kinetic shaky-cam action; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, praised by Reegs for Rocket's unexpectedly emotional backstory; The Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult, because Frank Drebin remains Frank Drebin; and Die Hard with a Vengeance, which gives Sidey an excuse to talk about Zeus, Simon Says, Jeremy Irons and New York puzzle chaos. There are plenty of other third-film detours too, including RoboCop 3, Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Alien 3, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, Back to the Future Part III, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the Cornetto trilogy, Avengers: Infinity War, Blade: Trinity, Karate Kid Part III and Ocean's 13. Sidey bends the rules by choosing the third episode of Twin Peaks, “Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer,” while Dan lands on Before Midnight, the third film in Richard Linklater's Before trilogy.Eventually, we arrive in 1300 AD for Army of Darkness itself. Dan has not seen it, but has correctly gathered that this is not really the same kind of horror film as The Evil Dead. Reegs, who has seen it many times, explains the tonal journey of the series: the first film as bleak, grimy horror; Evil Dead II as a genuine horror-comedy masterpiece; and Army of Darkness as the point where Ash becomes the full cartoon version of himself — part action hero, part idiot, part Bruce Campbell chin-delivery system. We talk about Sam Raimi's direction, Bill Pope's cinematography before The Matrix, Danny Elfman's contribution to the score, and the way Raimi's visual energy clearly echoes forward into later filmmakers such as Edgar Wright. The plot is gloriously simple and gloriously stupid: Ash is dragged through time after Evil Dead II, lands in the middle of a medieval conflict between Lord Arthur and Henry the Red, gets thrown into a pit, fights Deadites, reclaims his chainsaw hand, introduces everyone to the boomstick, and immediately becomes insufferable once the locals start treating him as their prophesied saviour. The film then sends Ash off to retrieve the Necronomicon, with one very clear instruction: say the words “Klaatu barada nikto” before taking the book. Naturally, Ash being Ash, he half-remembers, fudges it and unleashes the titular army of darkness. Along the way we get the windmill sequence, tiny mirror Ashes, Three Stooges slapstick, bad Ash splitting out of good Ash, Sheila falling for exactly the worst man available, and a castle siege finale full of skeletons, homemade weapons, a modified car and Ray Harryhausen-style chaos. We also get into the two endings: the darker UK/director's cut version, where Ash takes too many drops and wakes up in a ruined future, and the more crowd-pleasing US S-Mart ending, where he returns to work, tells the story and gets one last heroic Deadite showdown. Reegs prefers the bleaker ending because it feels funnier and more in keeping with Ash's ability to mess up almost everything. The verdict is affectionate, even if slightly qualified. Reegs still thinks Evil Dead II is the one to watch if you only watch one Evil Dead film, and he does not think Army of Darkness is great in quite the same way. But it is funny, quotable, inventive and packed with cult moments: the boomstick, S-Mart, “primitive screwheads,” bad magic words, skeleton armies and Bruce Campbell at maximum Ash. Sidey thinks Dan would probably enjoy it, describing it as something like The Princess Bride with Ray Harryhausen effects and comedy horror nonsense thrown in.So the final recommendation is simple: if you only watch one, Reegs says watch Evil Dead II. If you ask Sidey, just watch them all.You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. We'll read out any texts we receive on the show. YouTubers are taking over Hollywood. The critical and commercial success of Curry Barker's Obsession, Kane Parsons' A24-backed movie Backrooms, and Markiplier's Iron Lung—especially in contrast to relative flops like Supergirl and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu—has challenged the industry's conventional wisdom. It's not a huge surprise, given that so many creators on the platform have cultivated deeply engaged fandoms.  One of the first creators to really take advantage of that dynamic on YouTube was Felicia Day, when she created her seminal web series The Guild in 2007.  For the 20th anniversary next year, Day is tapping into that fandom to fund a reunion movie of The Guild. She sat down with MIC cohost Josh Christensen to discuss her decision to crowdfund The Guild movie, the importance of maintaining creative independence, and the recent mainstream success of YouTubers.

Would you give up your name to save your life, if a tyrant demanded it first? Matthew Fox and Erin McGowan open Star Wars Generations' new episode-by-episode watch-through of Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi with exactly that question, then dig into the animated premiere: a girl named Kara hunting for her captured father, and a warlord named Nawaam commanding an army behind a lightsaber that stubbornly refuses to turn red.Matthew argues the show undercuts its own premise by introducing Jedi-trained fighters too soon, while Erin pushes back that the scarcity was always about lost lightsabers, not lost Jedi. They also dig into whether Nawaam genuinely believes he's still the hero, and whether Kara's father is really collaborating with his captors or playing a longer game. If a blade that's supposed to expose evil won't turn red for a tyrant, what does that make him?Full show notes and resources**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Star Wars Generations, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. The AI industry spent the week arguing with itself, which is honestly the healthiest thing it's done in years. One coalition led by Nvidia begged regulators not to slow down open AI models, while more than 1,100 AI workers signed another letter asking regulators to do exactly that. Anthropic warned about bioweapons, OpenAI admitted the four-hour workweek isn't happening after all, and Microsoft's Satya Nadella reminded everyone that building your entire business on someone else's AI is a fantastic way to outsource your own brain. In other words, the people selling the future still can't agree on what they're selling, except that you'd better buy it fast.Meanwhile, the AI bubble keeps demanding sacrifices. Patreon, BuzzFeed, and Uber all swung the layoff axe while insisting AI isn't replacing humans... it's just reorganizing them out of a paycheck. Nvidia is floating another three-quarters of a trillion dollars in infrastructure deals that have people muttering "AI subprime mortgage crisis," China has discovered there's money in renting your face to AI companies, and the U.S. is carving data centers out of pollution rules because apparently acid rain is a small price to pay for chatbot dominance. Add in ChatGPT suddenly refusing to imitate famous authors, researchers discovering AI coding assistants are happily installing malware if you ask nicely, and Meta launching an ad campaign about the wonders of AI that somehow forgets to mention what any of those wonders actually are.Elsewhere in Tech Hell™, eBay finally paid the price for its executives' unhinged harassment campaign involving pig masks and live insects, Elon is shopping The Boring Company while promising money won't matter in the AI utopia of 2036, and a traveler is headed to court after allegedly triggering GrapheneOS's "duress PIN" during a border search. We also hit Media Candy with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Silo, Blade Runner 2099 and Neuromancer, celebrate Dave Bittner's birthday, marvel at Jason's ever-growing Boneyard of dead websites, and somehow end up discussing thermal cameras, piano repair, and old-man bladder supplements. Because that's what happens when Gen X gets older - we just add more tabs instead of closing the old ones.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.StoryBlocks - For a limited time, they're offering 15% off any annual plan at storyblocks.com/gogPrivate Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today.
