Hello and welcome to the History of the Germans: Episode 194 – The Fuggers of Augsburg, which is also episode 10 of Season 10 “The Empire in the 15th Century”Jakob Fugger had been dubbed the Richest Man Who Ever Lived, but there are many more contenders, my favorite being an African, Mansa Musa, the ninth Mansa of the Mali empire whose generous gifts during a visit to Mecca in 1324 triggered a currency crisis. That is something Jakob Fugger would never have done. He never was a flamboyant banker who impressed his contemporaries with lavish displays of wealth. He was actually fairly dull. If anyone in the firm of Fugger was flamboyant, it was the chief accountant. So if Jakob is a bit of a pale shadow, the story of what happened in the world of European Finance between 1480 and 1520 is anything but boring. Within just 40 years the heart of the banking industry moved from Florence and Venice where it had held sway since it was invented and moved north, into a medium sized Swabian city, Augsburg. That is as if JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley closed their doors and in their stead some local players from Scandinavia or Mexico took over the financing of the Global economy. I am not kidding, something like that really happened back in the late 15th century. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. Ultrasonic deburring on manufacturers wavelength

Intercable Tools GmbH has been firmly rooted in Bruneck in the Italian province of South Tyrol since it was founded in 1972. Since then, the family-owned company has been one of the leading manufacturers of connection technology and tools for professionals and the industry. Since May 2024, Intercable Tools has been using ultrasonic deburring technology from Swabian company ultraTEC Innovation GmbH to remove burrs from hydraulic units in a contact-free manner automatically. With Intercable Tec, a developer and manufacturer of automotive components, Intercable Tools forms a management-led family business with branches and over 600 employees worldwide. For some time, Intercable Tools had been looking for an automated solution to replace manually deburring hydraulic units of battery-powered hydraulic cutting tools made of aluminium and steel. Such hydraulic units are used in battery-powered perforators, which the company manufactures and distributes. These sheet metal punches are suitable for punching round, square and rectangular holes up to 3mm thick. The complex task for the ultraTEC was to remove all detachable burrs from the inside and outside of the components.   “We were looking for an innovative alternative to manual deburring. It's also important for us to produce our variants without set-up time,” said Heinz Pramstaller, Team Leader of Metal Production at Intercable Tools. “The deburring process should also be optimally integrated into the process, and the components should be cleaned using the same product carrier as the parts cleaning system.” The new ultraTEC A25 S system automates the manual process. The companies first contacted each other at the DeburringEXPO trade fair in Karlsruhe, Germany, in October 2023. Heinz Pramstaller brought the component to be deburred, so an initial deburring test was carried out on the trade show machine. The component was manually guided to the sonotrode, with a positive result. The advantages of this method over the previous manual deburring process quickly became apparent to Intercable Tools. Ultrasonic deburring means that the results remain the same, there is no damage to the drill holes, and uncontrolled material removal is generally avoided. It also guarantees that no holes are forgotten, which can happen with manual deburring. The ultrasonic deburring process has the advantage of cross bores being deburred and rinsed out simultaneously. The initial tests for Intercable Tools were, therefore, very promising. Non-contact ultrasonic deburring with the patented sonotrode forms the foundation of technology. Components to be deburred are guided in a water basin along the tip of an ultrasonic sonotrode, whose generated vibrations cause the burrs and chamfers to break off in an automated and energy-efficient manner. Stimulated by a generator, the sonotrode oscillates back and forth 20,000 times per second over 0.1mm. These generated vibrations move burrs and chamfers back and forth until they are broken off with sharp edges in a process-safe manner. Similarly, ultrasonic deburring does not apply temperature to sensitive components, which can lead to deformation and discolouration. In addition to deburring common metals, ultraTEC systems can be used with components made from various titanium and nickel alloys and fibre-reinforced plastics. From the deburring tests in Laupheim to commissioning in South Tyrol, numerous automated deburring tests were carried out with components from Intercable Tools at ultraTEC's premises in Laupheim. Detailed documentation was provided for each test so that the specialists from Intercable Tools could assess each one accordingly. Regular coordination meetings and a visit from South Tyroleans in Laupheim led to them placing an order for the A25 S ultrasonic deburring system in late March 2024. Two months later, the A25 S was showcased for the first time as an innovation at the GrindingHub trade fair in Stuttgart, Germany, before preliminary acceptance was already carried out at ultraTEC in mid-June 2024. Four weeks later, the A25 S was operated at Intercable Tools in Bruneck in South Tyrol. “We're delighted that we could implement the project quickly and that Intercable Tools chose ultraTEC to automate the deburring process,” says Thomas Benzing, Sales Manager at ultraTEC Innovation GmbH. “Maintaining a sense of partnership and trust when working with our customers is very important.”

Support milling with the right tools and know how

When outsourced manufacturing processes such as milling are brought back in-house due to the uncertainty of supply chains, up-to-date engineering skills and fresh know how are often required. The general trend to increase productivity and improve profitability may be timeless. However, when it comes to current trends, it is easy to lose sight of the big picture. The selection and use of the right tools and tool holders are critical as they determine the quality and efficiency of the end result. So, wouldn't it make more sense to consult a cutting tool manufacturer? If the crises of the past few years have made one thing clear, it is how fragile our supply chains are and how quickly they can be disrupted. The result is that business is done by those who can deliver. Manufacturers and production companies are therefore bringing back in-house manufacturing processes that they outsourced overseas years ago for cost reasons. The trend has been evident for some time. However, a problem arises if the knowledge and expertise have also migrated with the processes. Bringing back manufacturing processes In general, the successful machining of steel and, in particular, the precise and efficient milling of steel are impacted by a multitude of factors and their complexity can quickly become overwhelming. Tool manufacturers who can think in terms of the application are therefore a necessity – especially when they are also willing to provide advice on complex production processes. The Swabian medium-sized company of Karl-Heinz Arnold GmbH with its brand name of ARNO Werkzeuge is known for its first-class turning and parting-off tools. It has been a constant player in these processes for many years. What is less well known is that the family-run company also develops innovative milling tools that are manufactured in Germany. “With a high level of vertical integration, our development expertise and global sales structures, we manufacture high-performance milling tools that are deployed worldwide for efficient milling,” says ARNO marketing team leader Christian Kimmich. Support often incorporates systems such as a tool holder for corner milling and HFC indexable inserts, a multi-functional system for HFC and corner milling, a face milling system and solid carbide cutters. In particular, a new system for face milling has been introduced and it incorporates a recent new development. “One trend among users is towards smaller machining allowances for workpieces that run faster and at higher feed rates,” says Marco Staiger, Application Engineer at ARNO Werkzeuge. This is precisely why ARNO has developed the new, stable FT face milling system 09, a system that focuses on the application. The FT system is very stable and features a smooth cut and very quiet running. This provides the spindle with maximum protection and is the result of a large flat face on the holders, a positive rake angle despite the negative mounting position and a differential pitch of the flutes. More teeth and smaller double-sided indexable inserts The new FT 09 milling system consists of two variants of stable tool holders covering a diameter range of 20 to 125mm and it is equipped with eight flutes and matching smaller indexable inserts. The differential pitch of the tool holders ensures a quiet and low-vibration milling process. Especially with small allowances, ARNO promises a higher chip removal rate due to the higher feed rates. “Since we managed to achieve a narrower pitch in the tool holder, even though it has a small diameter, we can now place more teeth on the tool,” Staiger explains. This means that up to nine indexable inserts can be fitted, where only six were possible before. Despite the narrower dimensions, users do not have to dispense with cooling. Staiger adds: “Through the internal channels for cooling media, cooling lubricant or air for dry machining are fed directly to the cutting zone and ensure significantly longer tool life and optimum chip removal.” A particularly convincing feature is the optimal utilisation of the flute with smaller in-feeds up to a maximum of four millimetres. This means users no longer need to discard half-used indexable inserts. The large pool of applications demonstrate engineering competence Those who do not want to opt for ‘fast' or ‘fine' machining are best advised to use Arno's FD milling system. The nickel-plated long-life basic holders for corner milling and the HFC indexable inserts with four efficient cutting edges per insert can combine to achieve a high feed rate. These tool holders also have a differential pitch that reduces vibration and results in smooth surfaces. The system ensures a long service life and is easy to handle. Most users set their machining priorities with indexable inserts in sizes 10 and 15. The smaller insert achieves high surface finish credit to its large wiper geometry. By contrast, the 15mm inserts are ideal for roughing since they are extremely stable. ARNO offers different geometries and grades to flexibly adapt machining to the application in question. This is precisely where ARNO excels. It draws on the experience gained from a huge pool of applications and can advise on the most suitable tooling system for each case. The precision-manufactured positive chip breakers on the indexable inserts ensure a soft cut. Since they are also peripherally ground and polished, the PMA geometry can cut both aluminium and non-ferrous metals. With solid carbide cutters, ARNO also has tools in its portfolio that achieve optimum production processes with reduced downtimes thanks to fewer tool changes. The solid carbide metal cutters are made of an extremely fine grain carbide grade between 0.1 and 0.5µm. The consistent material properties are impressive and depending on the design, they are TiAIN, TiCN or AlCrN coated. ARNO's FE milling system is an alternative to solid carbide metal cutters. Manufacturers can opt for efficient shoulders or high speed during HFC milling. “In both cases, users benefit from high feed rates, extremely smooth running and excellent cutting ability,” promises Staiger. This is due to the highly positive mounting position of the indexable inserts and the spiral shape of the flutes, ensuring smooth material cutting. It is also an ideal situation if the tool supplier can adapt to the needs of its customers with special product lines. With the Basic Series, ARNO Werkzeuge offers efficient, rock-solid tools with many grades and geometries that are suitable for a wide range of machining tasks. On the other hand, the tools in the ‘Major' series are used when surfaces need to be outstanding. Every minute counts when it comes to tool life and difficult-to-machine materials or large production runs. The tools can be individually adapted with a selection of coatings or tool holders. Conclusion: Milling tools benefit from turning experience With its carefully designed and well-engineered milling tools, ARNO Werkzeuge has no reason to hide its light under a bushel. This is because it also benefits from the turning and parting-off expertise as well as from its application experience. We were impressed by how the milling systems are precisely developed for different applications and yet offer the greatest possible flexibility. With its extensive portfolio, ARNO serves the trends in milling.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 22, 2023 is: mesmerize • MEZ-muh-ryze • verb Mesmerize means "to hold the attention of someone entirely; to interest or amaze someone so much that nothing else is seen or noticed." The word is often used in the phrase "be mesmerized." // The crowd was mesmerized by the flawlessly synchronous movements of the acrobats. See the entry > Examples: "Yep, Ruth [Handler] ended up naming two of her iconic dolls after her kids. The idea for Barbie and Ken stemmed from a family Europe trip in 1956.... Barbara, then still a teenager, saw a doll that looked like an adult woman in a store window in Switzerland and was mesmerized." — Korin Miller, Women's Health, 21 July 2023 Did you know? Experts can't agree on whether Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815) was a quack or a genius, but all concede that the Swabian physician's name is the source of the word mesmerize. In his day, Mesmer was the toast of Paris, where he enjoyed the support of notables including Queen Marie Antoinette. He treated patients with therapeutic procedures (called, appropriately enough, mesmerism) involving what he claimed was a mysterious force termed animal magnetism. (Many believe that mesmerism was what we now call hypnotism). Accordingly, the verb mesmerize was first used to mean "to subject to mesmerism" before broadening to be synonymous with hypnotize, and later to mean "to amaze or captivate."

Legumes as a substitute for meat Legumes are healthy and they make you full, lentils, beans and peas are real superfoods that can replace meat and provide enough iron. Buddhists in particular are accustomed to meat-free food, but are always looking for new ideas to add variety to their cooking as well. Whether in a delicious curry, or as a burger without meat, legumes are incredibly versatile, also always offer a culinary surprise. In my youth, legumes were still a side dish, the satiator, which is also gladly called saturation side dish. Today that is completely different, there all possible special forms of the leguminous plants became genuine stars. Straight ones the vegan and the vegetarian scene discovered a completely new kitchen in the meat substitute from leguminous plants. Here the legumes are then often even used as a substitute for pasta, potatoes or rice. Especially in my hometown of Stuttgart, "Lentils with spaetzle" have long been a filling meal for the less fortunate, a poor man's dish that has made it to certain notoriety. Anyone visiting the Swabian capital should try the popular lentils. By consuming legumes, people absorb a lot of fiber, minerals and various vitamins, and the complex carbohydrates can help with weight loss and disease prevention. Similar to bakery products made from whole grains, pulses also provide longer-lasting satiety; you don't want to eat something else right away because there is content here. So calories can be saved, just the many people plaguing "constant appetite" is usually contained after the consumption of legumes. Especially important is the consumption of legumes for people with pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, gout or rheumatism, since, for example, according to the teachings of the Mayr cure, all diseases originate from the intestines, so the healthy fruits from the pod should come preferentially on the table (I for my part follow the teachings of the doctor Franz Xaver Mayr unconditionally, who was the father of the Mayr cure). Legumes are also low in fat and an important source of protein. The soybean, for example, is very popular as a source of protein, especially in Asia, and in Europe soy products are on the rise. In the supermarkets in the meantime whole shelves with legume mash are found, straight Hummus becomes ever more popular, tastes for instance as spread, or as addition to vegetables. If you do without animal products completely, you can cover your iron requirements from pulses, since the healthy vegetables provide a high iron content. However, dietary supplements (especially iron) should always be taken. Just with the meal applies: The way is the goal! Whoever looks for pleasure unrestrained, without measure at the meal and sluggish, weak in forces: the Mara falls like the storm the tree enclosure. - Buddha - honorary name of Siddharta Gautama - 560 to 480 before the year zero Copyright: https://shaolin-rainer.de (Please also download my app "Buddha-Blog English" from the Apple and Android stores)

Stories from China A reader keeps asking for stories from my time in China. The first time I was there was almost 40 years ago, entered via Hong Kong, then continued by train until I arrived at Shaolin Temple after many stops. At that time I didn't understand a word of Chinese, but I had a translation computer with me (yes, that existed at that time), with which I managed more badly than well. On the way in a Chinese sleeper car, surrounded only by Chinese, I felt pretty stupid. What a stupid idea I had, what a stupid idea, with every kilometer the doubts grew. To the Shaolin Temple, I, the spoiled billionaire's son (my father Rolf Deyhle owned (almost) all the musicals in Germany at that time (CATS, Starlight Express, Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon), the big entertainment shows were firmly in Swabian hands. And I was simply on the road, to a temple, I felt so stupid. Why not go back to New York, party nicely, or to Milan, meet beautiful women. No, to a temple the trip should go. In a men's magazine there was a report about the home of Chinese Kung Fu, I was electrified, I wanted to go there. I had always done martial arts, fit "like a fiddle" all my life, almost addicted to sports, despite all my faults like a wind-up man. There I was sitting in this train, my fellow passengers were getting drunk the whole way, there was smoking and cooking in this compartment. The people were so friendly, I was the first foreigner they had met. I interrupted the trip near the Chinese provincial capital of Xian, where I went to see the Terracotta Army, which was supposed to guard the first emperor of China in the realm of the dead. An impressive affair, wonderfully sculpted soldiers, each figure different, incredible. After extensive amazement, I gathered my courage to continue towards the temple, the train went to ZhengZhou. Again drinking fellow passengers, I began to learn Chinese, already obeying the need. The sanitary conditions were adventurous, my father gave me on the way: "Who makes a journey, can experience something". And that's exactly how it was, the smells, the food prepared on the train, simple but kind people who wanted to make China "palatable" to me. And they managed to do that, collectively they took care of the foreigner. But I doubted more and more my state of mind. In the next few days I will continue to tell the story. The way is the goal! In this, the seventh Norse Myth of ten, the mighty sword of the Viking God Tyr grants victory and death in equal measure across great empires... Tyr's Sword Carves Destiny and Victory. Tyr, Tiu, or Ziu was the son of Odin, and, according to different storytellers, his mother was Frigga, queen of the gods, or a beautiful giantess whose name is unknown, but who was a personification of the raging sea. He is the god of martial honour, and one of the twelve principal deities of Asgard. Although he appears to have had no special dwelling there, he was always welcome to Vingolf or Valhalla, and occupied one of the twelve thrones in the great council hall of Glads-heim. Tyr, whose name was synonymous with bravery and wisdom, was also considered by the ancient Northern folk to have the white-armed Valkyrs, Odin's attendants, at his command, and they thought that he it was who designated the warriors whom they should be transferred to Valhalla to aid the gods on the last day, the end of the world, Ragnarök. *** As the God of courage and of war, Tyr was frequently invoked by the various nations of the North, who cried to him, as well as to Odin, to obtain victory. That he ranked next to Odin and Thor is proved by his name, Tiu, having been given to one of the days of the week, Tiu's day, which in modern English has become Tuesday. Under the name of Ziu, Tyr was the principal divinity of the Suabians in the first century region of the Upper Rhine and Danube, who originally called their capital, the modern Augsburg in Bavaria, Ziusburg. These people, venerating the god as they did, worshipped him under the emblem of a sword, his distinctive attribute, and in his honour held great sword dances, where various figures were performed. Sometimes the participants forming two long lines, crossed their swords, point upward, and challenged the boldest among their number to take a flying leap over them. At other times the warriors joined their sword points closely together in the shape of a rose or wheel, and when this figure was complete invited their chief to stand on the navel thus formed of flat, shining steel blades, and then they bore him upon it through the camp in triumph. The sword point was further considered so sacred that it became customary to register oaths upon it. A distinctive feature of the worship of this god among the Franks and some other Northern nations was that the priests called Druids or Godi offered up human sacrifices upon his altars, these sacrifices were made upon rude stone altars called dolmens, which can still be seen in Northern Europe and parts of the British Isle. As Tyr was considered the patron god of the sword, it was deemed indispensable to engrave the sign or rune representing him upon the blade of every sword—an observance of which was said to be essential to those who were destined to be victorious. Tyr was identical with the Saxon god Saxnot (from sax, a sword), and with Er, Heru, or Cheru, the chief divinity of the Cheruski one of the early Germanic tribes, who also considered him to be a god of the sun, and deemed his shining sword blade an emblem of its rays. According to an ancient legend, Cheru's sword, which had been fashioned by the same dwarfs, sons of Ivald, who had also made Odin's spear, was held sacred by his people, to whose care he had entrusted it, declaring that those who possessed it were sure to have the victory over their foes. But although carefully guarded in the temple, where it was hung so that it reflected the first beams of the morning sun, it suddenly and mysteriously disappeared one night. A Vala, druidess, or prophetess, consulted by the priests, revealed that the Norns had decreed that whoever wielded it would conquer the world and come to his death by it; but in spite of all entreaties she refused to tell who had taken it or where it might be found. Some time after this, a tall and dignified stranger came to Cologne, where Vitellius, the Roman prefect, was feasting, and called him away from his beloved dainties. In the presence of the Roman soldiery he gave him the sword, telling him it would bring him glory and renown, and finally hailed him as emperor. The cry was taken up by the assembled legions, and Vitellius, without making any personal effort to secure the honour, found himself elected Emperor of Rome. The new ruler, however, was so absorbed in indulging his taste for food and drink that he paid but little heed to the divine weapon. One day while leisurely making his way towards Rome he carelessly left it hanging in the antechamber to his pavilion. A German soldier seized this opportunity to substitute in its stead his own rusty blade, and the besotted emperor did not notice the exchange. When he arrived at Rome, he learned that the Eastern legions had named Vespasian emperor, and that he was even then on his way home to claim the throne. Searching for the sacred weapon to defend his rights, Vitellius now discovered the theft, and, overcome by superstitious fears, did not even attempt to fight. He crawled away into a dark corner of his palace, whence he was ignominiously dragged by the enraged populace to the foot of the Capitoline Hill. There the prophecy was duly fulfilled, for the German soldier, who had joined the opposite faction, coming along at that moment, cut off Vitellius' head with the sacred sword. The German soldier now changed from one legion to another, and travelled over many lands; but wherever he and his sword were found, victory was assured. After winning great honour and distinction, this man, having grown old, retired from active service to the banks of the Danube, where he secretly buried his treasured weapon, building his hut over its resting-place to guard it as long as he might live. When he lay on his deathbed he was implored to reveal where he had hidden it, but he persistently refused to do so, saying that it would be found by the man who was destined to conquer the world, but that he would not be able to escape the curse. Years passed by. Wave after wave the tide of barbarian invasion swept over that part of the country, and last of all came the fiercesome Huns under the leadership of Attila, the “Scourge of God.” As he passed along the river, he saw a peasant mournfully examining his cow's foot, which had been wounded by some sharp instrument hidden in the long grass, and when search was made the point of a buried sword was found sticking out of the soil. Attila, seeing the beautiful workmanship and the fine state of preservation of this weapon, immediately exclaimed that it was Cheru's sword, and brandishing it above his head he announced that he would conquer the world. Battle after battle was fought by all-conquering the Huns, who were everywhere victorious, until Attila, weary of warfare, settled down in Hungary, taking to wife the beautiful Burgundian princess Ildico, whose father he had slain. This princess, resenting the murder of her kin and wishing to avenge it, took advantage of the king's state of intoxication upon his wedding night to secure possession of the divine sword, with which she slew him in his bed, once more fulfilling the prophecy uttered so many years before. The magic sword again disappeared for a long time, to be unearthed once more, for the last time, by the Duke of Alva, Charles V.'s general, who shortly after won the victory of Mühlberg in 1547. The Franks were wont to celebrate yearly martial games in honour of the sword; but it is said that over 1200 years before, when the heathen gods of the Swabian's, the Cheruski, the early Franks, the Danes and the Saxons, were slowly renounced in favour of Christianity, the priests transferred many of their attributes to the saints, and that this sword became the eternal property of the Archangel St. Michael, who has wielded it victoriously ever since. 1 A'dan H'ye 8 farklı tip toksin sınıflandırılmıştır.

How Gühring and Chiron are together milling their way into the HPC record books As machine manufacturer and cutting tool specialist, Chiron and Gühring share common development goals and the aspirations. Both aim to deliver outstanding products and to further increase their respective efficiency through symbiosis. Together, the Swabian manufacturers have now set a ground-breaking record: machining 1,000cm3 of steel in 60 seconds. That’s eight kilograms of steel per minute!

Common development goal With an extreme metal removal volume and a massive feed rate, both companies were pursuing the same goal, namely launching a product that excels in both dynamics and performance. The companies both had a new product in development at the same time – Chiron had the new FZ16 five-axis and Gühring had a variant of the Speed Ratio milling cutter. Thanks to many years of cooperation in the project business, Gühring and Chiron are always in close contact and sharing ideas.

It was only in the summer that they carried out joint initial tests with prototypes. Once both products, the Ratio milling cutter and the 5-axis machining centre, were market-ready, the experts came together to prove their performance under real conditions. Milling specialist Rolf Ehrler from Gühring says “Due to the ever-increasing performance requirements of our customers, we jointly devised the idea for a record attempt, and the result was an incredible 1,000cm3 of steel per minute”. The interplay of machine dynamics and milling stability is what makes such high metal removal rates possible and is bound to set pulses racing in the mould making, aerospace and automotive industries.

Two products, one aspiration: top performance The Gühring RF 100 Speed P tool is a roughing cutter specially adapted for machining steel, high-tensile steel and cast iron. Its 48° helix angle with unequal cutting-edge partitioning ensures a soft, quiet cut and great running smoothness. This reduces the load on the machine and increases the volume performance. The optimised chip gullet with a deep flute in the front cutting-edge area, ensures improved chip evacuation when ramping and helical plunging.

This allows swarf to be transported reliably out of the machine. Thanks to a corner protection chamfer and face correction, a stable cutting-edge corner was ensured. Chip breakers and the extreme cutting-edge length on the milling tool ensure a soft cut and great running smoothness. This reduces the load on the machine and increases the volume performance.

This all culminates to provide perfect conditions for the FZ16S five-axis single-spindle machine from Chiron. This machining centre is designed for the particular demands of accuracy when it comes to 5-axis machining. At the same time, it really stands out with its optimum dynamics, ensuring high productivity. The right tool is essential here.

Michael Eble is Head of Machine Development at Chiron. He says: “We have significantly increased the drive power as well as the dynamics and cutting performance of the 16 series. But the real fun begins when the tool manufacturer is then obliged to deliver an even more efficient tool because the machine can do even more. That’s when you know you’ve done things right.”

Milling strategy: HPC roughing The specialists at Gühring applied the modern HPC strategy. Controlling the cutter path with low radial feed that allows for comparatively gentle edging of the workpiece. HPC roughing is ideal for machining large cutting depths, as the roughing cutter machines the entire depth of the workpiece with the whole length of the cutting edge. The cutting forces are reduced and evenly distributed over the entire length of the cutting edge. This allows for high processing speeds and long service lives. High-performance cutting is the first choice for applications with enormous material removal rates. The components to be machined are usually made of high-tensile steels, which place increased demands on the machining process. In order to achieve appropriate results, higher cutting speeds, higher feed rates per tooth and greater cutting depths are used. The high cutting speeds are achieved with the help of high revolution frequencies, as long as the milling machine allows for this. By using the entire length, the load placed on the cutting edges of the milling cutter at the perimeter is significantly less and wear is reduced.

The milling process isn't new, but the basis of the performance of today’s machining centres such as the FZ16S five-axis, geometry adjustments and the wear resistance of milling tools, that HPC reveals itself as an advancement in machining when it comes to enormous metal removal rates. The major goal was to set a benchmark in this respect, while ensuring absolute process reliability. Rolf Ehrler says “Thanks to the 48° helix angle, we can create an extremely soft cut. This means that the tool literally peels the chip out. And the best part is the great running smoothness, which protects the machine.”

This was also recorded and verified by appropriate vibration analyses – integrated in the machine. This vibration analyses and the dynamics of the machine combined with the efficient Ratio milling cutter and the HPC milling strategy guarantee process stability and therefore more parts with the highest precision.

Unprecedented cutting parameters Under HPC conditions, the entire length of the cutting edge is used with a small cutting width, just 5-15% radial engagement (otherwise known as 'width of cut'). This allows for incredibly high feed rates. The feed per tooth was 0.5mm during the record attempt. With four teeth, this means two millimetres feed per revolution. This is of interest to all companies that have large quantities of steel to cut. This includes machine components, and the classic tool and mould-making industry, where mainly high-tensile steels are found. Primarily, though it's in aerospace, where lightweight components made of solid material with a material removal rate of up to 96% are produced. Of course, the special cutting-edge geometry can also be used optimally in the automotive and supplier industries and is very popular due to the large cutting-edge length. Michael Eble from Chiron is satisfied, he says: “We have succeeded in significantly increasing the milling stability and dynamics of a new machine series. In conjunction with the new Gühring RF 100 Speed P milling cutters, things are possible which have never before been achieved.”

He is the author of the book ‘Austerity, the History of a Dangerous Idea’. http://markblyth.com/books/austerity-the-history-of-a-dangerous-idea/ Mark Blyth describes himself as a myth-buster, someone who debunks bad economic ideas. In this interview with Coen de Jong he explains how unsound economic policies drive populism in both Europe and the United States. Everywhere in the western world voters real wages haven’t increased in decades. Since the financial crisis in 2008 average people have paid the bill through cuts to the welfare state while big financial institutions have been rescued by governments. Mark Blyth predicted in mid-2016 that Donald Trump would win the US presidential election. Voters turned to Donald Trump to send a clear signal that ‘enough is enough’. The same dynamic explains the Brexit vote and the support for right-wing populist parties across Europe and in the Netherlands. In the European Union Greece has been signaled out as the scapegoat for the Euro-crisis and was punished for its alleged sins. Former president of the Eurogroup and former minister of Finance for the Netherlands, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, accused Southern European countries of spending all the money they borrowed on ‘alcohol and women’. In reality, countries like Germany and the Netherlands bailed out their own banks - that were grossly irresponsible in lending so much money to countries like Greece in the first place – with taxpayers money. The Netherlands especially is a giant version of the Cayman Islands, a tax haven for business, so admonishing Greece for alleged moral failings is hypocrisy. Politicians in Germany and the Netherlands are obsessed with keeping state debt low, while private debt in the Netherlands is exceptionally high. German chancellor Angela Merkel’s famously said that finances should be run with the attitude of a ‘Swabian housewife’ in mind. Mark Blyth compares this to asking you cat for medical advice. What the EU needs according to him is a fiscal policy, instead of obsessing over state debt and leaving it to the president of the European Central Bank to try to kickstart the economy with monetary policy. Public sector borrowing and public sector investment are actually what is missing in Germany and the Netherlands. The EU-strategy of ‘saving your way out of a recession’ is fundamentally unsound, as poorer European countries such as Italy or Greece will never be able to generate economic growth by slashing public spending. What is needed, according to Mark Blyth, is some form of a ‘New Deal’ to restructure the poorer areas of the European Union and to transform the economies of the rich countries in the North-West of the EU to make them future-proof. Mark predicts tough times ahead for the UK if a Boris Johnson government opts for a Hard Brexit, with the car industry pulling out of the UK. The economic ideas of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – a left-wing populist - are not as radical-left as they are often portrayed. Many of these ideas would have been perfectly acceptable in the 1980-ies and are actually sound. In the United States Donald Trump stands a good chance of getting re-elected since unemployment is low and his supporters will come out to vote for him no matter what. Impeachment procedures will only fire up Trump’s supporters even more. The Democrats are still unwilling to address peoples real problem, obsessing instead over ‘culture wars’. A economically progressive candidate like Bernie Sanders could beat Trump but the Democratic establishment prefers candidates that favor Wall Street. Finally, Mark recalls that Adam Smith – often seen as the philosopher of unrestrained free market capitalism – actually stated in ‘The Theory of Moral Sentiments’ that even in economic life we should try to be good people.

The study deals with the two main problems in geographical education: How to inform students about a spatial practicing learning and teaching and how to evaluate this form of learning in comparison to theoretical non spatial forms of learning. The classic form of spatial learning is the outdoor excursion. But there are some new and actual alternatives when realizing the former intended aims of a spatial learning, so for instance didactical pathways, field trips or field works, but also the new way of geocaching and learning by GPS when dealing with the themes of orientation or finding out points of geographic importance for explaining the genetic processes. The necessary skills can be combined to improve the success of learning and to maximize the motivation. The base of this motivation behavior is the existence of a hide and seek-game as a modern version of a scavenger hunt. This motivates the students and is furthermore the attraction of Geocaching. Methodical skills can also be trained very automatically during this search. The GPS devices are of common use in the daily life and its use may increase much more in the fu-ture and in geographical use, too. Nowadays the literature about this theme is merely descriptive and thematically reduced to the function of orientation. The first study describing the learning suc-cess of using GPS devices and Geocaches in geography class had been made by NEEB. She tested the variation of the competence of orientation in different old classes when examining the use of GPS devices and Geocaches. Even though GPS devices and Geocaches are very efficient for instructing the students’ competence of orientation there may be the question, in what forms and circumstances the learning can be done. The time and effort necessary to generate a didactical and educational trail has to be justified against the background of the achieved learning effect. Educational trails need students, walking outside of the schools, looking for information along teaching paths and learning by the results. This active experienced learning leads to a better understanding of the environment, the outdoor circumstances and the people living in this area. You can structure such educational trails by Geopoints, this means points of a special geographic interest. Geocaches can structure such paths didactically. These structuring points are GEOpoints. The tasks at such Geopoints are structured didactical as well. GPS devices and Geocaches are complementing one another. They fulfill an important function in geographic orientation and the respective local information. Two important ministries in Germany (Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg) demand the use of extra¬curri-cu¬lar educational objectives in geography education. This means: visiting locations outside of the school and using the advantages of a fully learning by excursions. Neurobiology supports the idea that pupils completing the educational trail will learn much more and efficiently than students in “normal” classes: Indeed: A successful contextualization of modern geomedia stimulates the motivation. Geocaches are suitable for didactical structuration and motivation. A better and more comprehensive addressing to all senses will lead to a better sustainability. When testing the advantage of excursional learning comparing the same themes with a classical learning at school you have to differ within the students capacity of learning and the cognitive and methodical competence. For 17years aged students the theme of “Umgestaltung von Flusslandschaften“ (rearrangements of fluvial topography) was chosen because using this example of anthropogenic rearrangements of the Rheinaue wetlands near Karlsruhe shows the interdependency between human and environment was in the direct neighborhood of the students. Therefore the excursion could be realized very good without long transports. The “Nördlinger Ries” between the Swabian and the Franconian Jura is an impact-crater of world-wide importance. This location had been chosen for Students of grade 5 (10 years old students). The themes to work out were: The typical elements of the Swabian Jura (karst formation, hydrogeology, typical vegetation) and the special forms of the impact tectonics. The sustainability of educational trails using GPS had been evaluated by the answers of 441 ques-tionnaires. In grade 5 a multiple-choice-test had to be answered while grade 11 had to answer open questions in complete sentences. The influence of the teachers on the overall result is being kept low through the random selection, the number of the comparison groups and the teaching manuals. The overall results of these questionnaires show that the students of grade 5 which completed the educations trail achieved 11% higher scores in areas of the cognitive performance compared to the students who experienced classical learning at school. In grade 11 the students who completed the educational trail received 5% higher scores. Both differences in the results are significant and show a magnitude of effect, which is high in certain items. Consequently, the study has proven that educational trails evocate better cognitive performances than classical learning at school. The current state of research suggests that the development of environmental trails from teachers for teachers is not sustainable because the teachers don’t have the time to refine environmental trails didactically. The experience while creating the educational trails and the feedback of the participant teachers showed that teachers should cooperate for creating educational trails. The strain for each single person is reduced and the regularly use of the educational trails can be assured.
