Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast with a new album review, talking about the Nashville based black metal act Obsidian Shrine. This is the band's 3rd full-length studio album titled Dereliction of Divinity. For some reason, my mind went to that Incantation song "A Once Holy Throne" when I saw the song title "A Vacant Throne" but the two tracks sound nothing alike. Obsidian Shrine is a band who is heavily influenced by Marduk. Marduk was never a stand out to me personally as I feel like other talents in the Norwegian trve kvlt black metal scene have overshadowed them in terms of quality song writing. However, Murmur and Nazgul seem to have a way of making their guitar riffs pop as if they just know exactly how to harness the best elements from 2nd wave black metal like Gorgoroth and Dark Throne but give it a clean studio mix. Since I just blabbed on and on for filler sake, I'll remind you that this first track is called "A Vacant Throne" and if the former album is anything to go by, this one is loud, aggressive and in your face with the screeching banshees for vocals. They keep the raspy screams coming throughout the duration of not just this nearly 6 minute opening but the remaining 5 tracks as well. "A Vacant Throne" begins with the sound of howling wind before the early era Naglfar-esq riff and opening scream rips your face off. The drum work is speedy and unrelenting and the vocals are angry. Not to mention there is a brief but very sweet face melting guitar solo loaded with sweep picking. Next we have the song "Licentious Procession" which brings more vocals that sound even more venomous and you can really feel the seething hatred within the very few words you can actually pick out on the first handful of listens. The main rhythm guitar has a more memorable riff this time around but it's here where I must point out my first critique. I don't hear the bass at all in this music. I'm unsure if the Inquisition approach was intentional but this music could certainly benefit from having the 4 string turned up a little. "Obsolete Ideology" is the third track where this issue continued and in all honesty, it's not a track that I particularly remembered after my first listen but it later grew on me just a little. Still not my favorite track on this new record but it's still a blistering banger nonetheless. "Evil Has Its Day" is my favorite song on this album. As someone who thoroughly enjoys the melodic subgenre the most, it was refreshing to finally hear an undistorted guitar moment where the blast beats finally take a break. The blissfully sinister part comes with the nasally ghoul-like vocal break. Key components like this are what makes me pay the most attention. I wish there were more breaks on this album where different vocal styles or musical compositions come into play. I love the calming guitar riff just after the goblin vocals finish rolling its R's. It's short lived but still a great moment. The 5th track serves as a simple instrumental with long notes and a metronome drumbeat. Its meant to be an intermission or rather a prelude to the final song. Throughout we hear a loud mouthed TVangelist preacher fear mongering to all of his gullible followers. It leads nicely into the final song which happens to be the album title track. "Dereliction of Divinity" kicks off with black metal sound but after the first minute, we get a tempo change that slows to a grinding riff but the vocals stay the same. I'm glad the riff stays like this before the very Kerry King style guitar solo shreds in a quick and chaotic way. It's unfortunate that seconds later, this short album concludes very abruptly. There's no winding down or fading out. It just kinda ... stops. Dereliction of Divinity is an album I strongly recommend to fans of bands like: 1349, Taake, Watain or Sargeist. I'll give my boys a fair score of 6.66/10 rating.

Een kalenderjaar kan niet achter ons gelaten worden zonder een degelijke, grondige en kundige analyse van de ZM Jaarlijst. Nog nooit deden er zoveel lezers mee met de totstandkoming van het prachtige jaaroverzicht dat deze editie haar twintigste jubileum viert. De honderden stemmen leveren een eindeloze hoeveelheid discussiepunten op en die kunnen uiteraard nergens anders beter beslecht worden dan in Osmium - de zwaarste podcast in het Nederlands. Duiding staat hierbij voorop. Wat zegt deze lijst over de lezers en schrijvers van Zware Metalen? Hoe staat het met de vergrijzing en verjonging? Waar zijn de Belgen? Maar bij de vijftig hoogste noteringen houden de inzichten niet op. Sterker nog, in de catacomben van de ZM Jaarlijst kan het meeste plezier beleefd worden. Dat doen presentatoren Niels en Pim aan de hand van de meligste Osmium Awards ooit: prijzen van twijfelachtige statuur uitgereikt door een jury met dubieuze muzieksmaak. Uiteraard ontbreken klassieke categorieën als "de kneuzigste brigade", "de band die helemaal niet bestaat" en "de Psycho Synner" niet, maar onze maatschappij is gebouwd op vooruitgang en innovatie. Het zijn dan ook de nieuw geïntroduceerde Osmium Award categorieën die zorgen voor het meeste vertier. Welke stemmer heeft het grappigste e-mailadres? Wie maakt de minst onderscheidende black metal van eigen bodem? Voor welke ontwikkeling in de metalscene is Osmium het meest verantwoordelijk? Wie verdient het meest ons medelijden? Tiden går. Den 19. november 2022 feiret Jernverket tiårsjubileum med minifestival på Aye Aye Club. Etter planen skulle kvelden starte med livepodkast og akustisk konsert, men opplegget var nær å kantre da flere av bookingene kolliderte med annen turnévirksomhet. I siste liten meldte derimot Avertia seg frivillig til kalaset.Hvor er Taake-inspirasjonen? Hva skjer på fester i Fyllingsdalen? Hvordan var det å samarbeide med De Musikalske Dvergene? Il y a deux ans, nous nous sommes entretenus avec le chanteur Maurizio le cadre du projet EX-DEO, qui nous disait à l'époque qu'il n'y aurait pas de suite à Kataklysm dans l'immédiat. Il faut croire que les musiciens sont revenus sur leur décision, puisque trois ans après Unconquered, le groupe est déjà de retour avec Goliath, pour le plus grand bonheur des fans. Traiter de l'histoire de David contre Goliath n'est pas anodin aujourd'hui, l'album étant en réalité un album profondément actuel. Pour en parler, c'est cette fois ci le guitariste fondateur Jean-François Dagenais qui répond à nos questions et qui nous en dit plus sur ce que contient ce nouvel album et plus globalement sur le parcours du groupe. Du death metal il y en a aussi dans la Zone 66, nouvelle rubrique pour les cervicales échauffées, avec HORRENDOUS, mais il y aura aussi du black metal de haute volée avec TAAKE, THE CIRCLE, et évidemment les visions cauchemardesques de BLUT AUS NORD sur lesquels nous nous attarderons dans la chronique "Quelque chose à vous dire". Terminus has been, to some degree, derelict in its duty to promote Outlaw Rock this year. Hopefully today's episode ameliorates this deficiency with a grip of records all firmly within this rough and tumble style of black metal(?). For those unfamiliar with the term, Outlaw Rock is a concept formulated by Terminus for a distinct style of USBM with a range of pointedly American influences, from country to hardcore and all points between. In this case, we have two very different sides of the same coin: one creaking out ghostly whispers of the old west, and another which explodes in passionate psychedelic violence. A double-feature of Grave Pilgrim opens things up, with reviews of both last year's self-titled full length and this year's EP to provide better context. A mixture of KPN, Taake, and deep Americana makes for records which immediately hook the ear but feature surprising structural depth. In this feverish, borderline hallucinatory episode of Terminus, your two hosts unleash an enormous and bizarre late night recording session which goes off the rails rapidly through a combination of overwork, sleep deprivation, and alcohol consumption. We started at 10 PM and ended somewhere in the wee hours, reduced to gibbering wrecks in an episode where TDMG yells at his cats, The Offspring are sampled in conjunction with Maquahuitl, and the adoption of crack cocaine as podcast performance-enhancing drug is seriously considered. We open with Sxuperion, a project The Black Metal Guy has long and winding history with. War metal from beyond time and space, this band combines the rigor of Rites of Thy Degringolade with the analog synth-driven sounds of marginal electronic music, altogether making music unnerving, precise, and manic in its whiplike motions. Highly recommended for dedicated Terminators- this is what we dig through all those goat albums to find. Following is the debut full-length by a supporter's project, Blinding Sun, whose raw digital production belies a truly holistic understanding of black metal from origin to modernity. Blinding Sun sounds like everything at once, from a stripped-down Taake to modern post- and emo-infused projects, but it's all wrapped together with a strikingly versatile sense of guitar technique. These are challenging, winding songs that reveal more and more on repeated listens, granting deeper understanding to the considerate listener. After the break, we dive into TDMG's side, starting with Brazil's HellLight, a long-running funeral doom band which plays romantic and yearning music that nevertheless hews closely to the origins of the genre. Structurally bold, refreshingly minimal, and (of course) crushingly despairing, this is a record which goes a long way to rehabilitating the romantic funeral doom style in the eyes of your hosts. We'll need to dig further into this band's history and its scene- who knows how many more gems can be unearthed down south? Finally, bloodied and broken, we stumble across the finish line with the brilliant debut record by Eisenhand, a definite contender for one of our records of the year. TDMG shyly presents it to his co-host: "Is this what you mean when you talk about metalpunk, dad?" TBMG replies, smiling: "It sure is, son. Den gangen lurte vi på om black metal ville overleve, og dro paralleller ti år tilbake i tid. Nå, mer enn ti år senere, kan vi skrive under på at sjangeren fortsatt står sterkt. I intervjuet snakket verdens sjette ondeste mann (Terrorizer, 2007) om hvordan Nekro-EP-en skulle få fansen til å falle fra, om norsk kulturnostalgi og kulturarv, amerikanisering og kristendom, valg og politiske hjertesaker samt black metal som idiotmagnet. Known for their raging live show and heavy sound, FRANTIC AMBER is is an international melodic death metal band. With a captivating mixture of beauty and brutality, their momentum is unstoppable! In 2012 FA played the TV broadcasted P3 Guld Awards and festivals Wacken, Metaltown and Rockstad Falun.FRANTIC AMBER started in 2008 as a project in Stockholm by founding guitarist Mary Siebecke with the intention to play metal with females. At first it was an experiment through various genres and with clean vocals. It wasn’t until 2010, with the recruitment of Danish ballet dancer Elizabeth Andrews on extreme vocals as well as Japanese vocal and guitar teacher Mio Jäger handling lead guitar and main songwriting, that the identity of FRANTIC AMBER started to take its form into the melodic death metal beast they are known as today.Their music can best be described as melodic death metal with thrash, black, progressive, classic heavy metal and symphonic elements. The thunderous bass together with the technicality and power of the drums provide the backbone, while the guitar’s shredding and soaring melodies complete the soundscape together with Elizabeth’s powerful and aggressive vocals.Their first EP "Wrath of Judgement" was released in 2010 and landed them the opportunity to play live on national TV at the prestigious "P3 Guld" awards. From then on things went straight forward: Tours in Europe with Six Feet Under among others and multiple tours in Russia followed by releasing three videos for the songs "Wrath of Judgement", "Bleeding Sanity" and "Ghost". In 2012 they won the Swedish Wacken Metal Battle and got to play a show on the huge W:O:A festival.Their debut full length album "Burning Insight" was finally released worldwide in 2015 and caught raving reviews. Due to internal differences a lineup change was made and they found a perfect fit in immensely talented bass-player Madeleine Gullberg Husberg from Swedish heavy metal band "DWARF" and Colombian drummer Mac Dalmanner, from brutal death metal legends "Insision". With a stronger than ever line-up, they continued their journey and toured Europe and Sweden to promote the debut album. They also won a show on Sweden’s biggest rock festival, Sweden Rock Festival, competing against thousands of bands.They have since released three more videos for the songs "Burning Insight", "Soar" and "Gráinne Mhaol" and have gained millions of views on Youtube. They sold out and re-released their debut album, played numerous festivals and toured around Europe.
