Extrait : « … In this episode of Where Are They Now? we delve into the life and career of 80's star Terence Trent D'Arby or as he is known today as Sananda Maitreya as we journey from his strict upbringing as a child in the church under the thumb of his step father who restricted what music he was aloud to listen to. We also discuss Terence's experience with bullying and racial abuse during school. We then detail his experience at university and as a aspiring pro boxer before taking up a role in the US Army where he would eventually desert his post to follow his dream of becoming a musician, running with a 9 man band in Germany called "The Touch". As the talented vocalist eventually kickstarted his career as a solo act scoring 2 major hits including "Sign Your Name" and "Wishing Well" and taking home a Grammy award for his debut album titled "Introducing the Hardline". Only for his out of control ego and his failing 2nd studio album to send him on a path of self destruction as Terence would go through a transformational spiritual awakening to discover his true higher self, where he would then be known as Sananda Maitreya. As we learn what exactly the 62 year old is up to today. This episode was written, researched, narrated, edited and produced by Adam Hampton. Ever wonder what happened to those one-hit wonders that captured our hearts for a brief, shining moment? Mark Smith, Lou Colicchio, and I are your tour guides on a nostalgic expedition through the twists and turns of music history. We kick things off with a playful round of '45 Poker,' rifling through our records to unearth once-cherished tunes like "Black Water" and "Lady Marmalade." The debate heats up as we toss party anthems into the ring, putting "Love Rollercoaster" head-to-head with "Fire," and we don't shy away from a little controversy as we unpack Steve Miller's Rock Hall of Fame drama.Join us as we share the studio with the charming Jack, and we can't help but dish out laughter and sarcasm when discussing the quirky pasts of musicians like Creed Bratton and Terence Trent D'Arby. The show takes an interactive turn with "You Make the Call," where our listeners weigh in on the musical musings of the day. It's a session filled with insider anecdotes, the unexpected life choices of artists stepping away from the limelight, and the quiet afterlives of fame. Whether we're musing over Eric Clapton's guitar god status or the legacy of 70s hits, there's never a dull moment. To wrap things up, we reminisce about the 1978 music rankings, sparking a lively debate on the merits of Clapton's riffs versus those of his contemporaries. Our musical journey is packed with tales of artistic transformations, like Bill Berry's transition from R.E.M. to farming, and the quiet but fulfilling paths some artists take post-mainstream success. So, grab your headphones and get ready to smile, laugh, and maybe even sing along as we explore the rich tapestry of stories that the music world has woven into our lives.
Martyn Ware is one of the true pioneers of electronic music both as a founding member of The Human League , Heaven 17 and British Electric Foundation. He's also a highly respected producer with credits including Tina Turner, Terence Trent D'arby and Erasure and most recently a revered podcaster with his brilliant “Electronically Yours” series. I've admired his work tremendously from an early age discovering the League's early work like "Being Boiled", Dave Seaman and I remixed "Temptation" as Brothers In Rhythm in the 90s and we were lucky enough to have Heaven 17 perform at 80s Classical recently so this was such an honour for me to talk to him. Hope you enjoy. Having had over 18 months to process the passing of Michael Hutchence, INXS were presented with the unique opportunity to spearhead the opening of Stadium Australia. The venue that would in the year 2000, be the home of the Sydney Olympic Games. With ex Australian cricketing icon Dean Jones putting the deal together, INXS were proud to be the lead musical act that preceded the Australian Socceroos playing the FIFA All-Stars on June 12th, 1999 with over 90,000 spectators packing the venue. All they needed was a lead singer!!! Easier said than done. Enter famed USA soul, pop and R&B vocalist Sananda Maitreya then know as Terence Trent Darby, who some 10 years earlier, “came like a comet” (hello The Waterboys) onto the music scene with his 10,000,000 + Introducing the Hardline debut album. Was this to be a one-off? A rent-try-buy arrangement or some other modus operandi. Tune in to INXS: Access all Areas to find out all the answers to the above questions and also embrace in what was an unlikely musical union, albeit just for one night!! Love and peace https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com
In July of 1987 Terence Trent D'Arby released his debut studio album. Darly Easlea: "a soundtrack to the turning point when the 80s turned from austerity to prosperity. It's as central to that decade as the much-seen image of the city trader waving his wad of banknotes to the camera. It remains one big, infectiously glorious record." Lets talk Terence Trent D'Arby, Introducing the Hardline!
Philadelphia-based art-rock duo Tulipomania has teamed up with the legendary Martyn Ware and Charles Stooke on a new remix, along with an intriguing animated music video, featuring lip sync, original footage and vintage found footage – some vibrantly tinted in pastel – all collaged on sheets of black paper, shot frame by frame. Martyn Ware of Heaven 17 and The Human League fame is otherwise renowned for lifetime achievements in innovative musicianship, including as a record producer for artists such as Tina Turner, Terence Trent D'Arby, Chaka Khan, Erasure and Marc Almond. On this remix, Ware is joined by Charles Stooke, co-composer for the Illustrious Company, which Ware founded with Vince Clark in 2001. Apart from being released digitally, the ‘You Had to Be There (Martyn Ware & Charles Stooke Remix)' is also be featured on WIRE Magazine's cover-mounted Wiretapper CD compilation for October. #NewMusic #Interview #Dance

Sananda Maitreya started his career with the stage name Terence Trent D'Arby, he is an American singer and songwriter who came to fame with his debut studio album, Introducing The Hardline According To Terrence Trent D'Arby. The album was released in 1987 and included the singles "If You Let Me Stay", "Sign Your Name", "Dance Little Sister", and the number one smash hit "Wishing Well". The Release of his second album in 1989, Neither Fish Nor Flesh, was very different from his debut, and music critics seemed eager for Sananda to release music in the tone and style of his successful debut. Although not a commercial success the album has grown in recognition over the years. Sananda continues to preform and record music with the release of his 12th studio album, "Pandora's Playhouse" and the documentary "Welcome To The MadHouse: The Costa Rica Sessions" which is available to stream on YouTube. Here pictured with Andrew Ridgely - Simon Napier-Bell. George Michael: Portrait of an Artist is a wonderful, revealing, and moving documentary on iTunes and Amazon (if not in your territory yet it will come soon). Directed by Simon Napier-Bell who co-managed Wham! in the 1980s, he was responsible for their concert in China - the first by a western band. The documentary features interviews with only those who knew George Michael or had worked with him. It's that time again where we let you the listener choose an album, we listen, and then we tell you what we think. Honestly, this has become one of our favorite parts of the show. More often than not, we end up listening to something we otherwise might have passed up, and sometimes Michelle even finds something new to put into her rotation (which is a win-win for everyone). The eighties were a special time in music history, and we've talked about this before when we covered 1984 pretty extensively a few episodes back. Sure, 1984 was lit (I think we can all agree on that), but the trend continued on for quite a while. By the time 1987 rolled around, things within the industry were starting to shift. You might think that this would make for a rather difficult time to try and leave your mark on the world with a debut album, but singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sananda Francesco Maitreya formerly known as Terence Trent D'Arby thought otherwise. In the summer of 1987, "Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby" was unleashed upon the world, and almost immediately was met with critical acclaim. This was D'Arby's debut album, and he wasn't about to leave anything off of the table when it came to letting the masses know what he was all about. The album almost immediately hit #1 in the UK, Australia, and Switzerland. Worldwide, the album sold a million copies within the first three days of going on sale, and would eventually become a hit in the US as well, though they were a bit slower to catch on. Nearly every single that was released spent at least some time on one music chart or another. The album would reach platinum sales status in several countries, with it eventually going 5x platinum in the UK. It would appear that Sananda knew what he was doing when it came to putting together a debut project. The album would go on to be nominated for several different awards, and would eventually take home the Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 1988. What a way to introduce yourself to the industry. Join us as we time travel a bit and dig into one hell of a debut album, by an extremely talented artist. It's season 5, episode 12 of what should now be your favorite music podcast. LET'S GO!!! Keep up with all of the music we talk about in each episode by listening to the Infectious Groove Podcast Companion Songs playlist, exclusively on Spotify. It's World Cup year 1987 and a battle between such chart heavyweights as Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, George Michael and Prince, the year's breakout star Terence Trent D'Arby , rap giants like Eric B & Rakim and the growing influence of Stock, AItken and Waterman. Listen as Neil, Paul, Adam and Ben whittle 32 tracks down to an ultimate winner.
When Huey Lewis and the News prepped "Sports" they needed to sell records. It was to be the band's third release and without moving some product, the band might have had to dissolve and find something else to do. So, rather than write a killer album, the band chose to write killer songs, all aimed at radio with the hopes at least one would break through. Of course, five of them did and "Sports" is one of the biggest records of all time. What other records share this ? That is what this episode of Well Disguised is about. (It's also about how pop stars today are all young but many of the hitmakers of the 80s were relatively middle-aged, but that part is less well developed.) During the episode I reference a video where Terence Trent D'Arby fronted INXS. You can find that here: https://youtu.be/SIbkTKJDiC0

En la hora extra de antes sonaron: Deacon Blue, Swing Out Sister, Terence Trent D´Arby, The Christians, Los Lobos, Steve Earle & The Dukes, T´Pau, Julian Cope, Pastels, Dinosaur Jr, Wedding Present, Pixies y Go Betweens.
