On this week's episode of “The Smoke Break”, we had the honor of hanging out with Portland clown and all around sweetheart Arthur “Lucky” O'Brien. We started by tackling the assumption that using humor to handle tough stuff is an “unhealthy” way of coping, which—get this—it's not. Next up we explored the idea of “fixed mindsets”—how people often view themselves as being inherently good or bad at something, like being funny or not, and how actually….people can change. Lastly, we talked about finding your identity through performance and entertainment—how we came to do things we do, and how much of our identity is wrapped up in it, which can be complicated! Episodes drop every Monday @ 6pm on ALL platforms! Thanks for listening.

"Mindsets really, really matter because they set us up for learning. I don't know any leader or organization that doesn't want their employees to be engaged, to have high morale, to be learning and innovating." In this episode of The Managing With Mind and Heart, Nash Consulting's own Hana Butler joins host Ethan Nash to explore the transformative power of a growth mindset. Coined by Carol Dweck in the 1980s, the term "growth mindset" highlights how our beliefs about learning and failure shape our personal and professional lives. Hana breaks down the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset, showing how each influences our ability to innovate and grow at work. She explains that in a fixed mindset, mistakes are seen as a reflection of who we are, while in a growth mindset, they're opportunities for improvement. Text the word “LEADING” to 66866 to be added to Nash Consulting's monthly newsletter. Just practical management skills and tips. And just once a month. Pinky swear.

Fixed mindsets will be the death of network marketing. If we don't let go of this, we'll continue to set goals within limited frameworks, we'll continue to create limited results, results relegated to the limits of our thinking. When you set you goals, ask yourself this question: am I putting conditions on my the things I want to achieve? Am I creating a vision based on what I think I can achieve or what I actually want to achieve? This is ok if you treat your goals as “mile markers” and not endpoints. Mile markers are great temporary pit stops to reassess and set new goals. The point is to continue expanding into the next phase and the next phase after that. Doing this helps you over time develop and growth mindset. And that's the type of mindset that will save network marketing. =============Join our Facebook communityhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/redefinecommunityFREE!!! 2. Today's episode is all about self-accountability. Self-accountability is something that a lot of us have really quirky mindsets about. More and more people have come to me in coaching and told me that they, themselves, are obligers. As a researcher, I have noticed that obliger is almost always a code word for a fixed mindset about the skill of self-accountability. In this episode, we'll dive deeper into your belief about self-accountability, what it means to be an obliger, and how to move towards a growth mindset for the chance to truly develop self-accountability. PS: In the Change Academy workshop this month, I'll be talking exactly about how I started to view myself, not as an obliger, but as someone who could learn how to hold myself accountable and the process of how we learn to hold ourselves accountable.
If you have the experience and skills but are still asking yourself, “Am I ready? Am I qualified enough for the requirements of this job?”, you may have preconceived notions or fixed views holding you back from your goals. In this episode, Danielle Lisenbey, CEO of MedRisk, shares how her personal experiences in work comp and mentors throughout her career helped her become the successful female leader she is today. Danielle shares her insights on challenging fixed mindsets that keep us stagnant in our careers and knowing when it's time to raise your hand for an opportunity. And even more importantly, she discusses the significance of paying it forward when you do find a leadership seat at the table.Learn More About DanielleDanielle's LinkedInMedRisk's WebsiteNotable MentionsComp LaudeKid' Chance
So often we wonder why we do not get the results we are looking for. We will typically blame a person or group of people for our failures and mistakes. If you are leading a team you will frequently be tempted to follow the addage of "fire fast and hire slow". But are these really problems that are beyond your control or problems that you could control if your mindset was different? The problem is we get into denial believe that we have the right mindsets. If I were to ask you right now do you have a "closed" or "open" mindset you would undoubtedly say "open". Yet your behavior says, "closed", your team may even say "closed". That's because we don't know our mindsets well and what it would take to truly change them. Fortunately, on this episode of A New Direction Best Selling Author Dr. Ryan Gottfredson walks us through the four mindsets and how by changing them we can become more successful in every area of our life. Ryan Gottfredson's book: Success Mindsets: Your Keys to Unlocking Greater Success in Your Life, Work & Leadership is one of the most eye opening, life changing books I have ever read. If you take this book seriously it will change you, your work, the way you lead, and ultimately the way you live your life. In Success Mindsets Ryan Gottfredson focuses on four primary mindsets. "Growth vs Fixed Mindsets", "Open vs. Closed Mindsets", "Promotion vs. Prevention Mindsets", and "Outward vs. Inward Mindsets". As he takes you on a deeper dive of each one, there will undoubtably come a point where you see yourself along the contiuum of each. In fact, if you would like to evaluate yourself in each of these mindsets. Ryan Gottfredson will let you take his assessment for free by clicking on ryangottfredson.com/successmindsets Truly a life changing book! Growth mindset is the belief that our talents, skills, and abilities can be developed whereas a fixed mindset assumes that these are "set" and that we're not able to improve them.Researchers have noted trends in how these mindsets can impact our willingness to take risks, accept feedback, embrace challenges and tolerate failures. Those with a growth mindset often felt more comfortable with challenge and struggle, knowing that these are valuable part of the learning process and essential for growth.Learn more about Growth and Fixed Mindsets and how these can impact those of us with ADHD as we learn to work with our brains!

"It ain't about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward."- Rocky Balboa The world is definitely not made of sunshine and rainbows. Life will keep knocking you out every chance it gets, but how do we combat it, how do we win? In today's episode, I dive into Carol Dweck's coined terms, Growth and Fixed Mindsets. In her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, she details how your view of yourself can dictate everything. I also commemorate my good friend, Alex Flynn, one of the best examples of people with a growth mindset, and how he never let Parkinson's disease hinder him from being a true adventurer. Highlights: -A lot of people want to grow but they don't want to do the work. -Having a fixed mindset means you have to constantly prove yourself correct. -Growth mindset is believing that the hand you've been dealt with is just the beginning. You can get better at everything. Some important timestamps in this episode: (7:28) Ronnie O'Sullivan's story about how a kid thinks he's just lucky because he is talented. (12:01 and 20:03) Alex Flynn's inspiring story about wanting to go to the top of Mt. Everest amidst his battle with Parkinson's disease. I hope these stories inspire you to stop fitting in and start standing out. In 2022, what do you want to start doing and what do you want to stop doing? Check out Start 1, Stop 1 Challenge. Testing doesn't necessarily entail doing a formal exam, it's more about brief, daily testing during class and can involve doing an exercise, using flashcards or having the teacher ask questions after introducing a new concept. The best is to alternate teaching and testing, even within a single lesson. “Teachers think that evaluation is for them to get an idea of what the kids are doing, but according to the recent science, testing is really for the learner,” Dehaene says. “It's an essential part of the learning algorithm. You learn when you test yourself.” In this sense, testing and evaluation are misunderstood by teachers, he believes.”22:58 - See “Bloom's Taxonomy” (Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching) and the “Bloom's taxonomy” Wikipdedia entry34:58 - Listen to Beautiful Illusions Episode 06 - What We Talk About When We Talk About Politics from November 202035:10 - Difficult Conversations by by Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton, Sheila Heen39:09 - For a nice summary of Dehaene's 4 pillars see ”Did neuroscience find the secrets of learning?” (Article by Stanislas Dehaene, Paris Innovation Review, 2013) and “Science: These are the 4 Pillars of Learning” (Daniel Gogek)40:59 - See an outline of The Scout Mindset (Effective Altruism Forum)41:00 - Watch Julia Galef's TED Talk “Why you think you're right — even if you're wrong”43:51 - See “What are Book Clubs?” (Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Blog)57:36 - Listen to Brain Science Episode 167 - Stanislas Dehaene on “How We Learn” from February 20201:02:50 - See Metacognition (Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching) and the “Metacognition” Wikipdedia entryThis episode was recorded in August 2021The “Beautiful Illusions Theme” was performed by Darron Vigliotti (guitar) and Joseph Vigliotti (drums), and was written and recorded by Darron Vigliotti
“…a fixed mindset, in a very simple and short way, is a mindset focused on limited outcomes. If you or anyone you know, has a mindset on any topic of "if you get some of that bit of money, then there's less of it for me to have", that's a fixed mindset.” This podcast and our other podcast are productions of Little Red Hen Industries. Today in the Book Lounge, Tom & Karin discuss the book Mindset with special guest Trevor Ragan. Each week Book Insights creator and author of The 50 Classics Series Tom Butler-Bowdon and Memo'd Program Manager Karin Richey invite you to join their fun and casual conversation about the book of the week. Hear what they love it about, what they don't, how they rate it, and how it can advance your work and life. You'll learn why it was selected to be part of the curated list of Book Insights, and what's new with the book or the author currently. This week, Tom and Karin offer you insight on: *What Growth and Fixed Mindsets are, and the fluid nature of both. How we all can encompass each of the mindsets at different times, situations and as they relate to particular skills. *The risk of praising outcomes rather than efforts and how to foster Growth Mindset in yourself, your students, children, employees or those around you. *How Trevor Ragan has used Growth Mindset when consulting with everyone from MLB coaches to CEOs to kindergarten students. Book Insights are formal, structured summary, analysis and exploration of a bestselling nonfiction book. Each episode is read by a professional voice actor and will introduce a new title selected specifically for its value to your work and life. Book Lounge episodes are casual discussions about the book, the author, and anything else that comes along through the course of conversation. It's more of a broad chat about how the book relates to current, everyday life. Should I listen to both the Book Insight and the Book Lounge episode on the same book? Sure! Each episode works fine as a standalone piece, so no requirement to listen to both or to listen in any particular order, but we definitely recommend (and think you'll enjoy!) both. Think of it like reading a book and liking it so much you want to chat about it on the porch with a friend. That is the vibe at the Book Lounge. Like what you hear? We went a little deep this week, it has to be said. But - as ever, never ones to steer away from difficult topics, JB and Ant chew the cud on mindset damaging reputations and the ability to lead. Does our brain sabotage our competence, with constant imposter syndrome? JB also continues his love affair with Tim Gallwey and his Inner Game thinking. That - and the usual listener questions.

The main causes for so-called laziness include fear of judgment and negative emotion, fixed mindsets that make action feel useless, organizational issues that keep you confused and spiraling, and physical or mental deficiencies such as sleep, rest, nutrition, illness, and lack of alignment. It's not so much that we need to cure these issues, because that is a tall task without dedicated introspection, but if we are more aware of what drives us to act (or not), then we stand a chance of addressing it on a consistent basis. You may never truly overcome all of those issues, but for our purposes, breaking inertia is the goal. If the conversation about Growth Mindsets vs Fixed Mindsets sounds familiar, it's because this phrase has become a buzz word/buzz phrase in recent years - especially in the world of academics. In this episode we tilt the conversation a different way and look at what it means to parent with a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset. Ask Me How I Know: Multifamily Investor Stories of Struggle to Success
Noel Walton of Eagles Capital began his real estate journey by purchasing Carleton Sheets real estate training cassette tapes for $200 at the tender age of 19. His attention was later brought back to real estate investing while working for a property owner and realizing the income real estate investments generated. Moving past a fixed mindset, Noel decided to find areas he wanted to improve and learned how to accomplish that. When he and his wife decided to push past fear to purchase their first investment they found the rewards exceeded their expectations. Noel Walton is the President of Eagles Capital, a commercial multi-family investment company. He is also an Army Aviation Officer with over 20 years of military service. He and his wife Claudia began real estate investing in 2012 and have since managed numerous fix and flips, hold a portfolio of single-family rentals and are passively invested in 50 apartment units. They began investing in multi-family real estate to reach their goal of financial freedom due to its’ scalability and long-term wealth opportunities. Noel draws from his experience in past investments, decision making as a UH-60 Blackhawk Pilot and military leader and conquering fear as a skydiver. They have two daughters, Hannah (4) and Julia (1). They have a passion for giving back to causes assisting children and homeless/struggling veterans."Trust your knowledge and take action!"Reach out to Noel via LinkedIN Click Here
In this episode, we get to hear from three therapists who share their experience with Stepping it UP in a time of Covid-19, despite difficult circumstances. There's Rachel, who returned from maternity leave right when shelter-in-place started. Rather than falling into despair, she continued to build her practice with clients who were eager and ready to work with her. There's Sadie who, not only lost 85% of her caseload when she went virtual, but she then lost her "stable" hospital job. Where many people would scrimp and save looking for someone else to get them out of this mess, Sadie tripled DOWN by investing her time AND money into learning how to market. And finally, we get to hear from Sally. She didn't have a terrible experience. Her practice was going along just fine. But after listening to the last episode of The Money Sessions, she realized she had been "sheltering in place" with her practice. She realized this was the time to play big. Sally had this to say about therapists, "We remain creative amidst great suffering and an unknown future." In this episode, you'll learn: How Rachel's mindset allowed her to build her practice after maternity leave; What Sadie realized about leaning in after losing most of her income streams due to Covid; How Sally came to understand this is NOT the time to play small in her practice; What it looks like for YOU to adopt a Growth Mindset and excel, no matter what is happening around you. There is no doubt that a parent’s attitude towards school has a huge impact on his/her child’s attitude towards school.
