This week, I'm thrilled to welcome Paul Wheat, a dedicated 55-year-old triathlete who exemplifies what it means to be a High Performance Human. For Paul, high performance transcends athletic excellence; it encompasses all aspects of life, including sleep, nutrition, exercise, relationships, and mental health. The beauty of this journey is that you don't need to be a top-tier athlete to excel in these areas. Paul's transformative journey began in 2020 when he joined my SWAT Inner Circle after experimenting with a complimentary 12-week plan amid the COVID pandemic. The structured approach not only challenged him but also revealed the vital connections between fitness, nutrition, sleep, and work habits. Like many, Paul was once caught in the cycle of stress and fatigue from constant travel as a manager. However, he took proactive steps by applying training principles from SWAT, incorporating the 80:20 Pareto principle, and catalyzing a substantial transformation in both his personal life and professional environment. One of Paul's standout achievements has been the establishment of a workplace culture that encourages his team to maintain a healthy work-life balance, limiting work to eight hours a day. This impactful change has led to enhanced productivity and notably reduced staff turnover. Over the past five years, Paul has made impressive strides in his athletic performance, significantly improving his 70.3 Ironman time by 75 minutes—down from 6:45 to 5:30. Additionally, he has shed 19 kg, proudly stating that he achieved this by “cleaning up what I eat, understanding that processed foods aren't real food, and being more active.” If you're inspired to embark on a lifestyle transformation in 2025, Paul's journey is sure to motivate you! In this episode, we'll explore: The lifestyle changes Paul implemented and their impact on his health. How these changes elevated his triathlon performance. The process of integrating healthy habits within his work team. The positive effects of these workplace changes on overall performance. Paul's top three pieces of advice for anyone looking to start a similar journey. Join us for an enlightening conversation that could kickstart your own path to high performance! Paul doesn't do social media so you can't follow him but if you'd like to get a feel for how he has upped his game he recommends the following books: Ultra-Processed People:The Definitive #1 Bestseller You Need to Understand Ultra-Processed Food by Chris can Tulleken. In 2018, 12 Geniuses host Don MacPherson was told that he was a candidate to have both his hips replaced. With two young children in diapers and believing he was too young for the procedures, he put off the surgeries for two years. The pandemic extended the wait until 2023. By that time, Don's mobility had become limited, he was irritable, sleep was difficult, energy was low, and he wondered if he would ever be able to restore a life that was without constant discomfort. In this interview, Don turns over the host microphone to his friend Jason Lauritsen to discuss what Don learned about himself and becoming resilient. Don and Jason discuss how being open to feedback was crucial in helping Don realize that he needed to improve his health, how an audit of Don's values helped him understand that his family would suffer if he didn't take care of what ailed him, why this story might be relatable to others who are experiencing chronic pain and those who are living with someone in chronic pain, and how Don has gained a renewed sense of optimism about the future from this experience. They go on to talk about why building resilience is vital for anyone who wants to have a long, successful, fulfilling life and Don shares what he would like to do with the next 25 years of his life. Jason Lauritsen on Employee Performance: What you've experienced is a production style of management that was born out of the Industrial Revolution in an era where we were taking people off the farm, putting them in factories to basically do jobs that were better suited for machines, but we didn't have the technology to build those machines yet. So we had to get people to behave like those machines. We're still stuck where we think of people and treat people like machines to be optimized, to be tweaked. The problem is, that doesn't work for human performance. Managers aren't managing machines. They are managing these growing, developing, imperfect human beings who have needs and are facing obstacles and really want to be successful. And if they're not, then that means there's something going on that you need to solve for them or help them with. And when you get that shift made, things start to change. Highlights: [2:03] Can annual reviews actually be harmful to an employer? [6:27] Unintended consequences of tying annual reviews to compensation [7:16] Annual review horror stories [9:04] Changing your employee performance appraisal process [16:15] Putting managers in a better position to help employees learn and grow [21:52] Beginning of the year conversations [25:38] Deficit conversations [34:17] Feedback strategies to help employees succeed [41:35] “The perfect end-of-year conversation” and merit/bonus conversations [49:09] How much of an effect does hybrid work have on company culture? Work is a relationship. The attributes that drive engagement in the workplace happen to be the same qualities people look for in personal relationships: Feeling valued and cared for. A sense of trust and appreciation. So, what if we treated team members the same way we treat friends and family? What if we designed best practices to build rather than break down those relationships? What if we made decisions from a place of love? Today, we're joined by Jason Lauritsen, an expert in the realm of employee engagement and performance management. Jason has dedicated his career to solving for dysfunction in the workplace, exploring the issue from multiple perspectives as a headhunter, corporate HR VP, researcher and consultant. His new release, Unlocking High Performance, explores how performance management can be used to engage and empower employees to reach their full potential. Jason shares his deep understanding of the history of work, explaining why we're stuck in a contract model designed 120 years ago. He describes his relationship-based approach to decision-making in the workplace, offering insight on what leaders can do to diagnose performance issues, cultivate employee growth, and deliver feedback in a supportive way. Listen in for Jason's take on eliminating the traditional appraisal system—and learn how to apply design thinking to create best practices specific to your organization. Themes explored in this week's episode: Why work is organized around a contract model that is not good for human beings The connection between employee engagement and LOVE Applying The Relationship Test to build engagement at work Jason's frustration with managers who don't spend time with their people Delivering feedback that is oriented around future performance What leaders in performance management can do to optimize growth Jason's advice around eliminating the traditional appraisal system Applying design thinking to make best practices fit your organization Jason's suggestions for operationalizing the data you collect The power in asking, “Where am I going?” Jason's 5 questions for diagnosing performance issues: Are they clear on expectations? Jason Lauritsen joins Mike Sedam to discuss the workplace and how people can have a rewarding and fulfilling experience at work. Employee engagement is a cornerstone of the discussion. Jason talks about how he was driven to understand why a person would leave a job when he worked as a headhunter. He not only wanted to fill the position, but wanted to find out why the prior employee did not want to stay. The problem he saw was that he was trying to find someone who could merely survive working in that position. He wanted to solve the problem. Jason wants to take uncertainty out of the workplace. He is a speaker, consultant, and author of the book Unlocking High Performance: How to use performance management to engage and empower employees to reach their full potential. You can get his book from Amazon: https://amzn.to/2Qzwfco Jason and Mike talk about helping people think differently about the work relationship. They discuss the importance of communication, healthy relationships, and trust in the tribes we know as the workplace. Emotional Science is a new book written by Audree and Michael Sahota that focuses on helping individuals discover and break through the blockers that are holding them back from becoming better leaders. It is often said that if you want to lead others, you first have to lead yourself. Many of us have the desire to be able to show up as better leaders, we read books, sign up for seminars and yet, when it comes down to doing the actual work, we struggle. The reason for this is often that, while we want the results, the work itself is often too daunting to take on. Emotional Science provides a set of tools you can begin to employ that will help you discover the blockers you have placed in your own path and work through how to remove those blockers. The book also explores how your own emotional history can impact your ability to gain clarity on how that history impacts your ability to lead yourself, and others. One of the most impactful things I have picked up from this book is the idea that emotions have no sense of time. Something from your past that is unresolved can sneak up and find it’s way into how you respond to something that is happening to you right now. This is true of humans, and, to an extent, to companies as well. In this interview Audree and Michael share what led them to writing this book and how their diverse backgrounds brought them together in a shared goal of helping us (and the organizations we work for) find a better way to show up and be clear about the work required to achieve the results we are looking for when it comes to transformation. If you’d like to learn more about Emotional Science, including the free exercises and downloads that are offered and links to where you can purchase the book, visit https://emotionalscience.com/ You can also find Michael via the links below: Twitter: https://twitter.com/michaelsahota LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/michaelsahota And if you’d like to find out more about Michael’s Certified upcoming Scrum and Certified Agile Leadership Classes, click here: https://bit.ly/2NXcEgN
AWS helps financial services institutions run risk and pricing scenario calculations against large datasets in shorter timeframes and at lower cost. In this session, we will discuss how high performance computing (HPC) and grid computing patterns in the cloud are evolving to leverage serverless architectures with AWS Lambda. Also in this session, Fannie Mae discusses how it migrated a mission-critical, financial modeling application to Lambda from an on-premises grid computing infrastructure. It will describe the journey to serverless computing to develop the first serverless high performance computing (HPC) platform in its industry. Fannie Mae will also cover how Lambda has enabled the company to reliably perform quadrillions of calculations each month, at a fraction of the cost and effort.
