Megan Roup, founder of The Sculpt Society and beautiful new mama, sits down with Jordan to talk about the raw and relatable realities of motherhood, building a brand, and how she shows up for herself, her family, and her community every daily.  Juggling multiple roles can be challenging. Megan gives the entire backstory on how she spent six and a half years creating The Sculpt Society concept and gaining the courage to leap to be a solo entrepreneur after years working as a professional dancer for the NBA and teaching classes in New York City. In 2019, she foresaw how digital fitness was on the rise and created what quickly became America's #1 fitness app! Now, six weeks into motherhood to a beautiful baby girl Gemini angel, Megan opens up about the challenges she experienced throughout pregnancy, from her changing body shape to the frustrations of breastfeeding and recovery from labor – which, let's face it, is probably the most brutal physical workout a woman could ever do! She's very transparent about the exhaustion and exhilaration of being a sleep-deprived mom who maintains a business alongside her husband. Plus, she shares her plans to start teaching here in LA and to find a new community of clients and moms to align with.  Megan's journey and wise words to her younger self remind us to be gentle and kind to ourselves throughout the process: "Your timing will happen; it's all going to work out, and stop stressing because your timing looks a little bit different from everyone else's.” Thanks to http://interegrativenutrituion.com/soulonfire (The Institute of Investigative Nutrition) for sponsoring this episode! Jordan is a young mother of two young children; she’s also a doula, and therefore all up in bodies and their business. Her innate curiosity led her on a sex and biology research deep-dive that coincided with the start of her relationship with her husband. As a result, she is passionate in her work and home about open and aware sexual dialogue, consent, communication, and support. Jordan is a 23-year-old cisgender female who describes herself as white, straight, monogamous and married with two kids. She grew up in a Christian home and she describes her body as “tall and lanky like a baby giraffe.”   Bookmark moments:  Jordan shares her first memories of sexual pleasure. She started late at 16-17, and married early. Sex Ed was the usual, but her parents didn’t want her to attend the class without a frank but Christian-based family discussion first. She doesn’t tell anyone when she gets her period for a year despite overt symptoms that, when finally diagnosed, turn out to be polycystic ovarian syndrome. The pill is prescribed but creates a new set of problems. Early conversations between Jordan and her now-husband were honest and upfront about her health possibly precluding kids, even as they agreed she should come off the pill. Jordan talks about tracking her cycle for fertility awareness for birth control. PJ Parties for Grownups! Jordan tells the story of (reluctantly) meeting her husband. Jordan talks about the mental steps she took upon coming out of her Christian upbringing to open to pre-marital sex. When Jordan realizes there’s WAY more to sex than what she’s been taught growing up, she goes on a research bender and her now-husband was happy to lead the way and surf her learning curve. Jordan opens up about libido in the postpartum period and how she feels in her body. Jordan talks about being a birth doula, and she and Leah talk about mothers of young children being “touched out.” Jordan has a great hug metaphor to explain the very real energetic exchange—and loss. Postpartum sex. Jordan hopes to re-prioritize sex in the not-too-distant future. Jordan and her husband and thought and talked extensively about raising sex-positive, consent-aware, feminism- and equality-minded boys, while still celebrating their masculinity including their sexual journey.   The Lowdown (1:01:00) Do you have hair down there or are you bare? Do you think it's generally easy or challenging for you to orgasm? Have you ever faked an orgasm?   The Patreon extras for this episode are: Jordan’s first boyfriend, where she drew the line between "fooling around" and "having sex", learning to orgasm, and that time her ex-boyfriend slept with her best friend! Plus the full Lowdown Q&A.  Jordan talks at length about tandem breastfeeding her nine-month-old and her 2.5 year old and the AMAZING things our body is capable of!  She also talks about sexual breast play with her husband while also breastfeeding her kids.  As of July 2020, all Good Girls Talk About Sex audio extras are now FREE!  They can be accessed at www.patreon.com/goodgirlstalkaboutsex.  I've done this because not everyone has the means to pay for access, and I know this additional material can be deeply important for some listeners. Jordan Gill, operations consultant and founder of Systems Saved Me, helps overworked one-woman shows become streamlined solopreneurs. Her jam is creating a cohesive operating system for managing your tasks, files and inbox. She's been on podcasts like What Works and CEO Vibes sharing her love of replacing monthly retainers with one day virtual intensives. She currently lives in Dallas, TX with her cavapoo Vivienne and collection of 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzles. Here's what we covered on the episode: How Jordan was on episode 61 of the podcast and how we met 5 years ago on a launch that wasn't the best experience for us, bonded over the situation, and became friends In 2016 Jordan went full-time into entrepreneurship and ended up getting connected with some business owners where she was doing monthly retainers, which is the only business model she knew from a service perspective Jordan talks about how she had 4 clients at the time and says that about 5 months in, 3 out of the 4 clients were launching and shares that it was very stressful, which is how she figured out monthly retainers were not the way she shows up best When Jordan started looking into other ways of doing business, she hired a sales coach who was doing 3 hour VIP Days in her business, so Jordan asked if she could do that in her business but with systems How Jordan decided she wanted to charge $3000 for her intensives but had some struggles, thinking no one would pay that because she's too young but says she benefited from being young and naive because she did it anyways The majority of Jordan's business revenue came from VIP Days and weekends, and how that really allowed her to experience entrepreneurial freedom, which is why she teaches this business model now Sign up for Jordan's Done in a Day Virtual Conference to figure out how VIP Days would work in your business Jordan shares the 3 types of VIP Day structures, backstage, blended and book-end and also shares that she has a quiz you can take to know which structure would be best for you The backstage structure is when you aren't really getting on a call with your clients at all, they just reserve your day, examples of this are website design or copywriting — it's more of a service type VIP Day How Jordan does the blended structure, where she's on a call the entire time and is building the process at the same time, while the client watches her so they can become more familiar with the tool along the way When you think of a bookshelf you can sometimes have one book-end or two on either side of the shelf, and in the book-end structure, wherever you place the book-ends, those are your actual calls with your clients Jordan tells us about the most unique VIP Day she's been approached with and how the woman wrote songs to help heal people of trauma, so Jordan went to a friend who was excited about the idea and ended up getting the woman a referral partner Jordan talks about how we're both similar in the way that our best energy comes from when people invite us into a space to speak, because of this Jordan doesn't go live on Instagram much, instead she builds relationships with people and the invitations for her to come speak just happen from there How Jordan knew she was going to do a rebrand and told her content manager that she wanted to only hire VIP Days which was interesting because VIP Days are a newer concept so it got a little tricky when finding people she wanted to work with in the VIP Day format The story of how Jordan hired a branding agency in Dallas, TX had them come into her home so they could truly get a feel for her and then when she got her results back, they created a pineapple illustration that looked like SpongeBob SquarePants house for her logo, which made her feel so misunderstood When Jordan did her rebrand she hired a brand strategist who actually helped style her for her photoshoot too, she also hired a copywriter to go over all of the copy she had written, a photographer who really understood her, and a website designer— all were VIP Days Jordan says it was such a relief to do this rebrand and shares one of her favorite areas is the directory on her website, where she gets to showcase clients who have gone through their program so you can go hire them for their VIP Days The decision to move from Kajabi to Showit Jordan says was because of Kajabi's limitations on how you can organize the back end of your website, so she decided to switch when they were rebranding How Jordan's team was very involved in the switch because it's their mission too, it's not just the Jordan show — her ops coordinator moved all the courses, her graphic designer helped with the logo, patterns, prints and icons for the website, and her content manager had a lot of input on the social elements they needed Jordan explains that if you work in the rebrand space it's okay for your clients to not necessarily be overly jazzed about the branding process and just because they have doubts and fears doesn't mean you aren't doing your job well, it just means they are out of their comfort zone and you have to reassure them Sign up for the Done in a Day Virtual Conference, it's on March 8th and 9th, 2021 and you will get live virtual events in a fun, active and supportive environment Links mentioned: Systems Saved Me The Design Business Show - Bible Reading: Matthew 5:43-48; Romans 12:14-18The moment he saw the basketball roll off the nearby court, Boris Halligan snatched it, kicked it over the fence, and walked away. "Blam!" he yelled at Jordan and the other players. "Stupid game for stupid sheep!" When school finally ended that day, Jordan headed home, thankful it was the weekend. Two Boris-free days, he told himself. Normally Jordan liked school, but since Boris had transferred there, school had become a nightmare. There were rumors that Boris had been kicked out of his old school for shoving a kid's head into the toilet. Everyone believed the rumors, even though, when adults were around, Boris was perfect. When Jordan arrived home, he headed to the kitchen for a snack. "Hi, honey," his mom said. "We're having a guest stay here this weekend--someone from your school."Here she goes again, thought Jordan. Always helping someone who's "at risk." "Who is it?" Jordan asked. "His last name is Halligan.""Halligan? Boris Halligan? Mom, no! He's horrible. He's angry and mean and makes fun of everyone. He embarrassed Lindsey today by pointing at her lunch and pretending to barf. He said, 'You actually eat that cheap food? That's for poor people!'" Mom sighed. "Jordan, Boris is struggling. His mom died last year. His dad is dealing with it by drinking, and he just got arrested for public drunkenness. Boris can't stay alone, so our pastor asked us to help. You don't have to be best friends. Just be civil." So for the next two days, Jordan and Boris ignored each other. On Sunday, Jordan's family and Boris went to church. Jordan listened as the pastor talked about Jesus dying for everyone's sins and how to show others His love. He flinched when the pastor quoted Romans 12:17-18: "Do not repay anyone evil for evilIf it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Even Boris? wondered Jordan. But those words stuck in his head. Jesus died for Boris too, he thought.Later, when he grabbed his basketball and headed for the park, he stopped, turned around, and said, "Want to shoot hoops?" Boris shrugged but followed him. Without speaking another word, they shot hoops until dark. It's a start, Jordan told himself. Teresa AmbordHow About You?Do you show God's love to everyone--even those who are mean to you? It's not easy, but Jesus tells us to love everyone--even our enemies--because He loved us enough to die for our sins. That doesn't mean you let people hurt you though, so it's important to tell an adult if you're being bullied. But don't repay evil for evil--instead, pray for them, and show them the love Jesus has shown you. Today's Key Verse:But I [Jesus] say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. (NLT) (Matthew 5:44-45)Today's Key Thought:Love your enemies

Party mix is not a difficult thing to make, but it is an important annual holiday tradition for Jordan. “No one makes it like my mom. Your mom may make a good party mix, but it’s not like my mom’s.” Jordan’s mom, Vicki, is sweet enough to pay attention to what everyone in the family likes in the mix; she even makes separate batches for them (Jordan’s favorite are the Cheese Its). This attention to detail is only one of many ways Jordan has felt loved and supported by her mom through the years. Many thanks to Vicki for providing the party mix sampled in this episode. This led us into yet another discussion about Love Languages, which Fred touched on last week in our conversations about chitlins. What is this language we are speaking of? If you are interested in learning your love language, you can take the quiz here. Jordan is a marathoner. She is a running coach at the Run Far program at Run For Your Life and also serves on the Young Professionals Board of Girls on the Run in Charlotte. In this episode, she shared about how running has shaped her life in a positive way through the encouragement of the community. “Recognizing that you have the same fears and insecurities as other people, then being able to overcome them together, has been one of the most powerful experiences in my life.” You can read more about her journey to becoming a runner here. Another fun fact for you about Jordan: she has been a lover of Disney her entire life. When Jordan was a child, her mom worked at the Disney Store, and Jordan fell in love with the stuffed animals and videos there. When she moved away from North Carolina after college, she and her mother made regular vacation meetup plans at Disney to get away from cold midwestern winters. Disney became home away from home for Jordan and her mom. And guess what else: Jordan met her fiancee on a Disney fan site, too! They have the same favorite nighttime show - Fantasmic - and are planning to see fireworks together next year at the 50th Anniversary Celebration in October 2021 after they get married. So sweet!

Green Lantern: Earth One Vol. 1: The newest Earth One original graphic novel presents an all-new origin for the Emerald Warrior!Hal Jordan yearns for the thrill of discovery, but the days when astronaut and adventure were synonymous are long gone. His gig prospecting asteroids for Ferris Galactic is less than fulfilling-but at least he's not on Earth, where technology and culture have stagnated. When Jordan finds a powerful ring, he also finds a destiny to live up to. There are worlds beyond his own, unlike anything he ever imagined. But revelation comes with a price: the Green Lantern Corps has fallen, wiped out by ruthless killing machines known as Manhunters. The odds against reviving the Corps are nearly impossible...but doing the impossible is exactly what Hal Jordan was trained to do!Co-writer/artist Gabriel Hardman (Invisible Republic) and co-writer Corinna Bechko bring us a soaring original graphic novel that takes a radical new look at the mythology of Green Lantern and provides a great entry point for new readers. This week on the OCD Podcast we are joined by Reid and Richard from the Doctor DC Podcast to discuss Green Lantern: Earth One Vol. 1 and all things Hal Jordan! Jordan has been on a water fast for the past 15 days, and now that she’s back she wants to share all of what she has learned during the experience. We use over 40% of our daily energy digesting and absorbing food, and this can be even higher for people with illness and digestive issues. But when you fast, your body can redirect that energy back into healing. In this episode, Jordan dives deep into the benefits of water fasting, the struggles associated with it, and how she sustained motivation to get through it all. This is a very intimate and deep episode and we hope it helps inspire others who are living with chronic “incurable” illnesses to share that healing IS possible! Jordan received so many downloads during this time and is so happy to be able to share them here with you guys. Thank you to our sponsor, HUM Nutrition! When Jim West, in his theme song, declared "No, you don't want nada," Jordan and Nic should have listened. When Jordan told Nic, "Are you sure you want to watch Wild Wild West?" Nic should have put some thought into why Jordan might be asking that question. Instead, for their first episode quarantined away from each other, Filmshake is talking about the 1999 cinematic plague, Wild Wild West. Why is this movie so sex-obsessed? Why is this movie? And what did Kevin Kline ever do to Nic? Jordan and Nic try to figure it out, and it takes them longer to do so than on any other episode they've ever recorded together. Maybe they just missed hearing each other's voices. The duo also discuss The VelociPastor. It's a movie about a VelociPastor.Make sure you stick around after the wicky-wicky credits. Please forgive the periodic crazy electronic chirps. Life is beautiful. Ever since we had our first baby, we love hearing other people’s birth stories –– because every one is so unique and different! In this episode, we’re sharing ALL THE DETAILS from the birth of our firstborn son, Beckett, and not holding anything back. It was an experience we’ll NEVER forget! Here's a preview of what we're talking about... • Where we were and what we were doing when labor started • Why we chose a birth center (with a midwife and doula) instead of a hospital • In detail, what it looks like to labor unmedicated for 20 hours together, not hooked up to anything except each other :) • When Jordan broke down and cried... and why • The moment Amy almost gave up because she didn't think she could do it • How Beckett was born, and what we did in those first hours afterward • The one thing we would tell EVERY first time parent trying to choose the right care for them

Sandy and Anthony Perez kept telling doctors their daughter Jordan was very sick. Their concerns were dismissed and Jordan’s pain minimized. They were ping-ponged between specialists, dealing with ongoing misdiagnosis, and doctors who refused to listen to Jordan and her parents and threatened to remove medical care. When Jordan died in the hospital, Sandy and Anthony thought it was due to a yet to be diagnosed illness. Only later would they find out Jordan had been poisoned to death by the hospital and they were covering it up.  Wanting justice for Jordan, Sandy and Anthony sought legal support - over 100 lawyers told them the same thing: California has a law that effectively makes hiring a lawyer for medical malpractice suits a non-starter: the law puts a cap on how much lawyers can be paid and how much victims can be awarded. Suing is a money losing proposition. As Sandy and Anthony learned, the legal system is set up to deny justice to medical victims, and the medical system is set up to deny accountability of doctors. A de facto license to kill. Jordan shouldn’t have died.  Sandy and Anthony shouldn’t have to fight to find out how the hospital killed their daughter. Jordan's drawing, titled: Will you remember me? SHOW NOTES:   Interviewing Sandy and Anthony Perez about their daughter Jordan 0:05:30 Sandy was born outside of Chicago, but raised in California since she was 7 - had a normal childhood with 3 sisters - went to college - met Anthony in 1994 0:06:30 Anthony was born and raised in California - good childhood with great mom and dad - their daughter Jordan was born April 5th, 2000 - she was a cranky baby, didn't want to sleep unless being held, always wanted to sleep with them 0:07:30 She was a one-off child, liked to do things her way - she liked to dress herself, there was no arguing with her - she played soft ball since age 4 and made the city's all-star team for 2 years - and her Dad (Anthony) coached her - when they moved to the high desert, they put Jordan in 'travel ball' - a more intense game softball league 0:08:30 The league had better quality coaches and was geared to show to colleges - it is called 'travel ball' because they traveled to and played in different cities - Jordan was the kid who would befriend others - at Jordan's memorial service, several of her friends spoke of how they were alone but Jordan invited them to play 0:09:30 It was very important to Jordan that others felt included and were not left out - in May 2014 Jordan started to complain of headaches - Jordan had allergies, including grass, but benadryul helped - then her neck started to hurt - in December 2014 she went to the doctor with neck and head pain 0:10:30 Jordan was suspected to have mastoiditis (infection in the masto bone behind the ear) and sent her to the ER - they didn't find anything, didn't run any blood tests, suggested it was migraines and sent Jordan home - a couple of weeks later Jordan had symptoms of the flu, couldn't keep fluid or food down, so they took her to the ER - they told the ER doc about the previous mastioditis diagnosis, so they ran more tests and found blood clots in Jordan's brain 0:11:30 They sent them to another trauma centre and that is where Jordan was treated for the next 3.5 years - they were frightened and wondering how it could've been missed - blood clots don't usually show up on CAT scans, but they did in Jordan 0:12:30 They were told the blood clots were a rare complication from the infection in the masto bones - Sandy and Anthony asked how Jordan could've gotten mastoiditis, and were told via infection of the sinus or ear - but Jordan didn't have those infections, so how could that be? But nobody could answer that - the hospital put Jordan on a hepadrin drip for a day and then changed to lovonox injections - both are blood thinners to more blood clots, but wouldn't treat Jordan's current blood clots 0:13:30 They also put Jordan on antibiotics for 6 weeks to fight the infection - Jordan started to perk up a bit, her headaches would coma and go, and she was treated with Toradol, which Sandy understands is a super Motrin, and that seemed to be Jordan's 'wonder drug' - she would be much better for 24 - 36 hours on one dose - it appeared Jordan was getting better - what they didn't know was that Jordan wasn't getting better 0:14:30 During Dec 2014 while getting treatment at the hospital, Jordan appeared to have a stroke and they sent her to ICU - ultimately they sent Jordan home saying she was improving and to continue the antibiotics - Sandy and Anthony were told Jordan had a stroke, and told she did not have a stroke - Jordan was sent home early January 2015 but Jordan was in the local ER a few days later with uncontrolled chest pain - the local hospital called Jordan's trauma hospital to transfer her, but they refused 0:15:30 The local hospital treated her and sent her home - the very next day they ended up at the trauma hospital with chest pain, increased headache, blurry vision, and a reaction to the antibiotic medication - they admitted Jordan for a couple of days, adjusted her antibiotic and sent her home again - about a week later, the eye doctor suggested a lumbar puncture because of Jordan's blurry vision and swelling of the optic nerve - this showed Jordan's cerebral pressure was severely elevated 0:16:30 A lumbar puncture extracts spinal fluid, during the process they monitor the pressure level and check spinal fluid for infections - Jordan's pressure was elevated, nearly twice normal - and it can affect vision 0:17:30 The following year they did another lumbar puncture, but the day after Jordan would vomit just from being touched - they put in a lumbar drain, to drain cerebral spinal fluid and monitored her for 5 weeks and make a decision how to proceed - in Feb 2015 they made a decision to internalize the drain, making it a lumbar shunt, and sent Jordan home - her headaches seemed to be improving, but she was taking Motrin daily 0:18:30 Jordan started developing a lump where she had shunt surgery, the doctors said it was filling with cerebral fluid, so they had to do a revision surgery - Jordan had to lay flat after the surgeries, she couldn't get up to go to the bathroom, so was very uncomfortable - she had a surgical scar on her abdomen as well as her back, and she was in pain - March 2015 was the revision surgery 0:19:30 Jordan needed another revision surgery in May because cerebral spinal fluid kept leaking of her back surgical scar - in June 2015 they went to Jordan's softball team's banquet because they recognized that Jordan had been on the team, but too sick to play - they had to leave the banquet early because Jordan started leaking spinal fluid, and they went to the hospital - they took the shunt out, and reverted back to the lumbar drain - a few days later they implanted a VP shunt, going from Jordan's head to her abdomen 0:20:30 The tubing was in the ventricles of her right side, and drainig the cerebral fluid into her abdomen - they put a hole in her skull, and the shunt ran down her head, behind her ear, and over her shoulder and down her back - and that was very uncomfortable for Jordan - Jordan's diagnosis never changed: infection causing mastoiditis, with rare complication of blood clots, causing increased intracranial hypertension 0:21:30 In January 2015 they learned from an infectious disease specialist suggested cancer could be a cause a differential diagnosis - oncology did ask about cancer in the family, and Sandy and Anthony said there was cancer on both sides, but the doctors never followed up for the entire 3.5 years 0:22:30 But June 2015 Jordan had daily headaches, impaired memory and vision, and still too sick for school - she was on the hospital home bound program to do some school work - Sandy had to write down Jordan's words because Jordan had IVs in her hand - she finished her freshman year about a week before her sophomore year started - the family went on vacation in August 2015, but Jordan stayed in the condo rental, she wasn't well enough to leave 0:23:30 So Jordan was still exhibiting the same symptoms from the start, in spite of the treatments, in spite of the surgeries - Jordan was back in the hospital a few times for head and chest pain, but the hospital couldn't find anything wrong and would send her home - in Feb 2016, Jordan's eye doctor say that Jordan's optic nerve was swelling again and recommended opening up the drain further to reduce pressure and help her vision and so she wouldn't go blind, but it was not to help her headaches 0:24:30 Feb 2016 the neurosurgeon opend the shunt all the way, but Jordan still got sick and was in and out of the hosptial - in June 2016 she saw a new pedeatric neurologist at the same hospital, and he started suggesting it was migraines because of a family history - Sandy told him it wasn't migraines because Motrin doesn't work on migraines, and Motrin worked for Jordan, she didn't need anything stronger - he then suggested Jordan was abusing Motrin - they pointed out she was only taking 400mg a day, and that is not excessive 0:25:30 The doctor also suggested they go back to hematology, and they took her off the blood thinning medication in June 2016 - but Jordan still battled with headaches, blurry vision, and kept getting sicker - Jordan's health would be up and down, so Sandy and Anthony tried to enjoy life with her 0:26:30 But Sandy was frustrated the hospital kept saying it was migraines and she knew it wasn't - when Jordan complained of jaw pain, they sent her to a dentist who couldn't find anything wrong - Jordan's joints would ache, but rheumatology would say there was nothing wrong with her - Sandy got more frustrated so took Jordan to another hospital for assessment, they too suggested migraines - Sandy was still working, when Jordan was in the hospital, Sandy would work from her bedside - do her job around doctors, testing, etc 0:27:30 Anthony says it was hard, they didn't know what they were dealing with - sometimes Jordan would grab her neck and Anthony thought it was maybe muscle spasms - when she'd come into the living room to get something to eat, she'd be doubled over, holding her stomach, saying how much pain she was in 0:28:30 To be experiencing that much pain without a proper diagnosis is ridiculous - Jordan missed her sophomore school year, and was on the home study program, but they had to fight to get her proper courses and support to keep Jordan in her honour classes 0:29:30 Jordan missed her friends, and it was hard on her - in July 2017 Jordan was getting increased headaches and had a new lumbar puncture 0:30:30 Sandy told the hematologist that Jordan seemed to be having blood clots in her toes, the doctor dismissed that and said Jordan must have dropped something on her toes to cause the trauma - Sandy explained that was not possible because Jordan was mostly bed ridden - the hospital said that Jordan needed to be taken off Motrin, she was using and abusing it - that night Jordan was vomiting because of the pain 0:31:30 She was admitted to the hospital that same doctor said that Jordan had migraines and needed to be detoxed from Motrin - he told Sandy and Anthony that if they didn't accept his diagnosis of migraines, he would refuse to treat Jordan - meanwhile Jordan is very sick with a forced diagnosis that didn't fit - Sandy told the head nurse that if they are saying it is migraines, then they might as well discharge Jordan - then a neurosurgeon came in and said he reviewed all Jordan's MRIs of the past year and a half and saw that she had enlarged veins since spring 2016 0:32:30 He wanted to angiograms to see if that was causing issues in her brain - an angiogram is a catheter like needle into the body to see what is going on in the venous structure using contrast to show up on images 0:33:30 The neurologist who pushed a migraine diagnosis came in and wanted Jordan's complete history, so they told him about everything from 2014 up to that point - he said he would get a 2nd opinion hematology consult - but he never recorded it in her records and never requested it - he said he would give her a lumbar puncture but if it was a certain number they would have to concede he was right with the migraine diagnosis - Sandy told him what he wanted to hear to get testing and treatment for Jordan 0:34:30 When the numbers came back, Sandy maintained that it was not migraines, something else was making her sick - they discharged Jordan and gave her Motrin - they had one follow up appointment with the neurologist and he suggested it was psychiatric - he referred them to another neurologist and refused to treat Jordan - he followed through on his threat and refused to treat Jordan - they saw the new neurologist in September 2017, at first he mentioned psuedo tumor cerebri, this is alos intracranial hypertension when the brain thinks it has a tumor but it doesn't - he said he'd do some research and talk to them at Jordan's next appointment 0:35:30 Jordan was sicker and ended up back in the ER - they said it was migraines and copy and pasted previous notes that said Jordan was abusing Motrin - they put her on a detox protocol called DHE, a medication to help people withdraw from medications that are harming them - Jordan got sicker, not from the DHE, but from the pain - they also gave her Toradol (like super Motrin), so while they are detoxing her from Motrin, they give her high dose Motrin 0:36:30 The attending doctor said 'it looks like the DHE protocol is working' - Sandy said 'no, you approved Toradol, that's what's helping her, not the DHE protocol' - that doctor said they'll send Toradol home with Jordan - Jordan would be less sick with the Toradol, but after it wore off after 24 hours, she'd get sicker - Jordan had been taking the Motrin as directed 0:37:30 They went back to the neurologist who diagnosed intracranial hypertension, but he changed his diagnosis to migraines and attempted to treat her with migraine meds - they told him that Jordan did not have migraines - he suggested treatment with Botox - Jordan got sick during the appointment and they went across the street to the ER - again they said migraines, again Sandy and Anthony said it wasn't migraines, they gave her Toradol 0:38:30 The attending physician didn't examine Jordan, but asked if anybody had told them that Jordan had an enlarged spleen - Sandy said it had never been mentioned, what does it mean, what's the impact on Jordan - the doctor said 'its probably nothing' and they discharge Jordan with migraines - they went to Jordan's primary care doctor and said the hospital must be missing something - he order more testing, but it was to be done at the hospital, that's where all of Jordan's records were 0:39:30 On February 14, 2018 Jordan had abdominal imaging, ultrasound done - they wouldn't let Jordan leave at first - they asked about Jordan's history of blood clots and the shunts - they said Jordan had to follow up with her primary care right away - Sandy asked if they had to go to the ER, and they said 'no' - on the way home, Sandy called primary to make an appointment - Jordan was to come to primary care in the morning of Feb 16th - at the appointment they told the family that Jordan had 'portal vein thrombosis' which is blood clots leading into the liver 0:40:30 He sent them back to the hospital, they ended up in the ER - at the time they did not know that the person who introduced themselves as a doctor, was actually an unlicensed medical student, with no authority to examine, treat or discharge Jordan - his attending physician supervisor did signed saying she examined Jordan but never did - the 'doctor' said he didn't accept testing not from the hospital, and ordered all the same tests - they confirmed portal vein thrombosis - the 'doctor' said it was a GI issue and referred them to a GI department - Sandy called the GI department, but they refused to do anything while Jordan was in the ER 0:41:30 The GI department said Jordan needed to book a consult - Sandy told them they had previously requested a consult - regardless, they refused to set an appointment - Sandy asked the ER 'doctor' to bring in a GI doc to the ER for Jordan, but he said it wasn't necessary - they also asked that hematology be notified because this was the 3rd appearance of blood clots - again the ER 'doctor' said it was a GI issue and Jordan needed to be seen only as an outpatient - they discharged Jordan and told her parents it was not a life threatening condition 0:42:30 The following Tuesday Sandy called the GI department to make an appointment - they said they would review Jordan's file and call back in 24 - 48 hours with an appointment - but they didn't call until March 2nd - Sandy also called hematology to make sure they been told Jordan had more blood clots - they called back and said they were not told, and to take Jordan to the ER and they would admit her - Jordan was admitted on Feb 20, 2018 to Feb 23 -- on the 21st they wanted to send her home to be an outpatient, but Sandy demanded the GI come see Jordan will she was inpatient 0:43:30 The GI said that wanted to do an endoscopy to see inside her abdomen - they said the results were mild reflux, but nobody could explain the blood clots - Sandy asked 3 different hematologists about cancer testing - one said they could do that test, another indicated he would order them, but never did - the 3rd said cancer testing was unnecessary because her blood tests were normal 0:44:30 This 3rd hematologist is the same one who in 2015 was told to do a cancer differential diagnosis, which he never did - but Jordan's blood work was not normal - they sent Jordan home - on Feb 26th they were back in the ER, Jordan was doubled over in pain - she was seen by a resident doctor who insisted Jordan was constipated and gave Jordan an enema - Jordan felt completely humiliated - and still in pain 0:45:30 The attending physician signed off said she had examined Jordan, but she never came in, they never saw her - she was sent home with constipation medication - on the Feb 27th they called oncology, they advised managing Jordan's pain at home because they had an appointment on the 28th with hematologist and he would admit her to the hospital - on Feb 28th they had their appointment with the hematologist - Sandy begged him to help her - he said it was a GI issue, he could refer her to pain management, and sent her home 0:46:30 He never put that in Jordan's medical notes - that night they called oncology to let them know they were bringing Jordan to the ER and listed her symptoms - when they got to the ER just before midnight - they made Jordan wait for 4 - 5 hours -- Sandy kept letting them know Jordan's pain was very high, but other patients were prioritized, including somebody walking out on crutches from a sprained ankle 0:47:30 Jordan was admitted to the hospital on March 1st - the hospital staff said Jordan was quite sick - Sandy said 'yes, we've been trying to tell you that for 3 years' - on March 4th a new hematologist asked about the cancer testing - she suggested Jordan may have lymphoma and they needed to do further testing - Jordan was being monitored in the ICU 0:48:30 On March 5th Jordan was moved back to onclology and they did a bone marrow biopsy for cancer - on March 6th they were waiting for test results - Jordan was heavily agitated, kept trying to get out of bed - the last words she said to Sandy were "Mom, I just want to go home" - Jordan layed back down and fell asleep - later that night Sandy went to Ronald McDonald house to get some rest 0:49:30 About 30 minutes later the hospital called Sandy to say Jordan was non-responsive and they had administered Narcan - Sandy got back to the hospital and over heard the doctor arguing for the last bed in the ICU - they told Sandy again they had given Jordan Narcan, it is given to someone to reverse an overdose - On March 6th they moved Jordan back to the ICU and said they needed to put Jordan into a medically induced coma to allow time for her to heal 0:50:30 The resident doctor told them that Jordan's ammonia levels were very elevated - Sandy asked how they missed that? - his answer was 'not to focus on placing blame, but to focus on Jordan getting better' - early March 7th they placed a drain in Jordan's abdomen - Instead of draining normally, it was draining into Jordan's abdomen - a couple of hours later the same doctor that was arguing for an ICU bed, told Sandy and Anthony that they were life-lining Jordan to another facility because she needed a liver transplant 0:51:30 So they started to prepare for that - Anthony went home to grab some sleep and Sandy stayed at the hospital with Jordan - at about 8am the ER attending doctor said Jordan was very sick, Sandy said we've been trying to tell you that - during morning rounds, the GI doctor who saw Jordan in Feb, came running in and told the attending hematologist she failed to read Jordan's lab work from weeks prior when Jordan was in the hospital and had alpha one anti trypsin deficiency disorder, and it affects the liver and lungs 0:52:30 The doctor than told Sandy she'd provide more info once Jordan was stable and transferred to another facility - Sandy and Anthony thought the worse was probably over, and the staff never said Jordan was dying - around 8:30 neurosurgery came in and said they needed to remove the shunt tubing from her abdomen because she had an infection and they didn't want it to spread to her brain - so Sandy and Anthony permitted that surgical procedure 0:53:30 Sandy was waiting in the family room right outside the ICU while they performed the procedure - at about 10:40 am while Jordan was still in surgery, a social worker came into the family room and told Sandy that Jordan had 'coded' during the procedure - Sandy remembers running to Jordan and yelling 'you killed my daughter, you killed her' - the social worker asked Sandy what she meant - she said that they'd been bringing Jordan for help and they kept saying migraines 0:54:30 They did CPR for about an hour until Anthony could get to the hospital - they gave Jordan blood products - but they stopped at about 11:40 am - that day they asked Sandy and Anthony if there was anything they needed - Sandy and Anthony asked for the lab reports and testing as they had other children and wanted to know if there was anything they needed to worry about - the hospital said they would get those results to Sandy / Anthony, but they never did - about 2 weeks later, they went to the hospital's patient relations and requested the information again - and filed a complaint 0:55:30 State law says they have to turn over medical records within 15 days, but they didn't hand them over until about 40 days later - when Sandy was going through the records over the next few months, in July 2018 she realized the records were missing a huge chunk of data - so they requested again, and it took another 45 days to get more records - to this day, Sandy and Anthony still don't have all Jordan's medical records - that info was either withheld, or never recorded 0:56:30 In Feb 2019, Sandy and Anthony went to Washington DC for rare disease week - they went because of the rare blood disease Jordan was diagnosed with 6 weeks after her death, called 'primary myelofibrosis', an extremely rare form of leukemia, less then 50 children in the US diagnosed with it - less then 20,000 nationally - someone at rare disease week said something sounded fishy - they were advised to ask if Jordan's death had been reported to any agency 0:57:30 Sandy contacted the California Department of Public Health to see if Jordan's death had been reported - they told Sandy they had no record of Jordan's death - Sandy asked if the hospital was required to report Jordan's death - Sandy was put on hold - she was then recommended to file a complaint - so she did file a complaint - even though Sandy and Anthony have had several conversations with the investigator, they still don't have any info and its been 10 months 0:58:30 It is a state investigation, so red tape, bureaucracy, limited personnel - those things have caused delay - they hope to get more records soon 0:59:30 They had Jordan's GP look at the records, and paid a professional to review and confirm Jordan's eventual diagnsosis of 'primary myelofibrosis' - the hematologist who had suggested lymphoma called Sandy and Anthony on April 23, 2019 and asked if any one had spoken to them about what was going on? - Sandy asked if Jordan's diagnosis had of been caught earlier if Jordan would still be alive, and the hematologist said 'yes' - but never heard from the hematologist again, but knows she left the hospital in April 2019 1:00:30 Sandy researched 'primary myelofibrosis' and life expectancy is up to 10 years after diagnosis - but she could have been cured with stem cell transplants or been in remission and lived a full life - in April the hematologist said she'd written a report and what happened to Jordan - in Sept 2019, Sandy and Anthony found out that the hospital had overdosed Jordan causing her death - and they were not monitoring her as they should have been 1:01:30 Sandy and Anthony think the hematologist report covers an adverse event, and by state law that must be reported, but the hospital chose to cover it up instead of reporting it - in California they have laws that put a low cap on medical malpractice settlements making getting a lawyer impossible because they won't earn any money 1:02:30 So the system is set up so patients can't get justice, and doctors are not held accountable either by the justice system or the state medical board - Sandy and Anthony have not heard from the medical board since they filed their 9 complaints against the providers 1:03:30 Sandy and Anthony asked, in January 2019, the investigator to include another 257 providers associated with hospital or Jordan's care, but they have not heard any thing - Sandy and Anthony have been advocating for reform of the MICRA Act (medical injury compensation reform act of 1975) 1:04:30 MICRA limits compensation to $250,000 due to medical injury or death by medical injury - it also limits how much an attorney can be paid to about $75,000 - but in Jordan's case it would cost about $200,000 to litigate, making it economically infeasible, and that patients can't get justice - When Jordan was in school in LA she waitressed, and her customers would ask what she was studying. Having these conversations led to her first client, which led to more clients. And the thing is, most of us don't do this enough. Talk about what you do! I'm guilty too. So, let's make a pact, when someone asks us what we do, when they ask what we're up to, We Tell Them! When Jordan was working in LA, whichever client had a current project got the most attention, but that meant lots of time in recording studios and not much time taking care of herself. After starting her location independent life, that all evened out. Each client received a reasonable amount of her attention and so did she. Is there a way you can distribute your time now, so that you aren't run ragged? Oh my. This is such a struggle for so many of us. Tamara K. Anderson interviews her children and husband on the Stories of Hope in Hard Times podcast. They talk about how their lives have been changed for the better because of two sons with autism. Lessons, advice, tips and love shared. The Anderson Family: One Family’s Perspective on AutismAnderson family BioJustin (old) according to the kids. Husband to Tamara for 22 and a half years, and father to four amazing children.Jordan, age 21. College student majoring in Elementary Education. One of my typical kids.Nathan, age 20. Mostly non-verbal kiddo on the autism spectrum. We talk about Nathan on our podcast, but he doesn’t comment (mostly because he would just echo back whatever we said).Jacob, age 16. Jacob is an amazing kid that has high-functioning autism. He just learned to drive last year and is attending high school.Noelle, age 14. Noelle is our only girl and she is an amazing “second mother” to the group of boys. She is also in high school and is my other “typical” child. What was it like to grow up with two brothers on the autism spectrum?Jordan: It was a learning experience. They didn’t grow up doing “normal” activities. He noticed that he couldn’t interact the same with his brothers as other brothers that he saw.  He dreamed of playing catch with his brother or wrestling with his brother, but Nathan didn’t want to do those kinds of social interactions. When Jacob came along he was able to finally grow into doing some of these things as he got older.Jordan explains that he had to learn to interact with Nathan differently. He learned how to show him that he loved him without a reaction. One interesting thing is that Jordan has always been extremely social and he wanted to tackle and interact with Nathan (who didn’t always appreciate that). I often felt when they were little like I was always playing referee. But looking back I realize that was probably the best thing for Nathan, because he had someone constantly inviting him to interact in the “real” world instead of always staying in “autism’s world.”Jordan is not intimidated by children with special needs, and he believes this is one of the blessings of growing up with brothers on the autism spectrum. As he is studying Elementary Education, Jordan looks at each child differently and he knows, he “can work with them.” He concludes he has a baseline because he has two amazing brothers with autism. He feels he has been guided to this major so that he can help children with all different kinds of needs. What is it like to have autism? What goes on inside your mind, and what makes you different from other kids?Jacob: The problem is learning to relate the “autism world” to the real world. “I don’t know what the normal world is like. All my life I’ve been living just being me.”Jacob is now fully integrated into regular high school. He didn’t always used to be able to handle this, but has grown to this point. One thing that is important to explain is that there is this real draw or pull to click over to the autism world in his mind or what we call “Imaginations” in our home.ImaginationsWhen I asked Jacob what he is thinking about when he does his “Imaginations” he answered that it is kind of a wild card. He explains that he can’t just think of one thing because that would be boring. So, he thinks of lots of things, but he can’t always control where his mind wanders. Sometimes he thinks of recent video games he has played, and creating off-stories in his mind. He also likes to imagine what would happen after the end of a book he has just read or the story before the book begins. Basically prequels, sequels and stuff like that. That is one of the cool things about having Jacob in our home is that he often thinks outside the box. When he was little he crafted these amazingly creative Super Jacob-man comic books that were so fun to read. He made the illustrations for them and everything. Jordan remembers having Jacob read him those comic books and helping him create the characters and then just watching the story come alive.Super-PowersI think every child has a super-power. Some of Jacob’s super-powers are learning math or numbers and dates. When he was little we would randomly ask him when people were born or when they died and he would tell us. It was pretty cool. So, this means he does well in history as well. Another of Jacob’s super-powers is music. He can memorize songs much more easily than most kids. Noelle has also noticed how easily Jacob memorizes long classical pieces after only playing through them a few times. She admits she wishes she could do that too:). I think we all do.“Kids with autism and normal kids have their own super-powers. You just have to find them.”NathanNoelle enjoys interacting with Nathan because he is so pure and he isn’t distracted by things in the world. Some of the things that make him happy are “drop pillow” when you drop a pillow on him and tickle him. Jordan adds that doing “Star Wars” where you do the Darth Vader’s breathing and then tickle him. He then laughs with this big gut laugh that is so contagious.Nathan is like a giant 2-3 year old child, but he outweighs all of us and he is taller than all of us, well, maybe Jacob is slightly taller than him now.It is nice that Nathan now has some very simple words or phrases to ask for certain things. He definitely lets you know if there is something that he doesn’t want by saying, “all done,” “no,” or “go home.”A Nathan StoryFor example, recently we took the family to go watch Captain Marvel. This requires a little bit of tricky planning. We always get seats on the very back row of the theater and we always seat Nathan in the corner. This way he can play on his iPad (with the screen turned all the way down) and not distract anyone.Anyway, on the way to the movies he let us know, “No movie. Go home.” We tried simple reasoning (with a little bribery). “First movie, then Walmart?” NO! “First movie, then DI?” (DI is a local thrift store where Nathan likes buying used DVDs). Yes! So, he happily walked into the theater and then I took him to DI afterwards. We didn’t used to be able to reason with him, so it is nice to have hit this point.Changing schedules with these kids is challenging. They do well with visual schedules and so we usually have to write things down to let them know what we are doing. Jacob comments that spontaneous surprises are very hard for him as well, and it bugs him.A Spontaneous Story–And Why that Doesn’t WorkI shared the example of spontaneously buying tickets to go see the Lego movie while my kids were at school. After I picked them up I told them we were going straight to the movie. Jacob freaked out about this saying, “This is not what we do after school. First we go home and have a snack and then we do our homework.” So, basically I had to try to reason with him and help him try to get past the change to even allow us to go. After the movie when I asked him if he liked it he answered, “Yes, but next time we have to follow the schedule.”So, spontaneity with these kiddos is very challenging. Jordan says he is very spontaneous too, so Jacob and Nathan act as a counterbalance for the spontaneousness in our home. This is going to look different in different families and from child to child. So, each family is unique. When I ask the kids how they feel about our family being talked about in my book, Normal for Me, Jordan answers that he is glad that we can share our story and spread more light. It is important for people to get a look at how autism impacts families and how we incorporate God in our family as well.Jordan goes on to say that he hopes this will help people see that children with autism do have super-powers and they have desires and hopes just like typical children. What are some of Nathan’s Super-Powers?Noelle shares that Nathan is really gifted at doing puzzles. Most people take their time with a 500 piece puzzle, but Nathan can crank it out in about 2 hours.Jacob adds that another of Nathan’s super-powers is doing word-searches. He does them on his iPad but he will also crank through an entire word search book in about a day. But he has to circle the words in the order in which they are liste. I have to buy word search books at the 99 cent store because we go through them quite quickly. So, Nathan can see patterns in puzzles and in words and letters more easily than the rest of us. Those are his super-powers.The Kids Favorite Bible VersesNoelle–Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God.” Noelle likes this verse because it helps us remember that we are in God’s hand and that He can help us, and He knows what we are going through. He is always there.Jordan–Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”Story behind the verseJordan was at a point in his life where things were challenging and this verse taught him that I can’t do this, but if I rely on God, He can pull me through it.” The more we give ourselves to Him the more He can guide us to where He needs us to go. He still feels God prompting him and guiding him even in college.Jordan explains that some people think of God as a puppeteer, but Jordan sees us more as a Pinocchio. We can choose where we want to go, but it is good sometimes to let go and let God guide us.This is often hard to do when God is putting you on a path that you don’t want to go on, like I describe in the Normal for Me book, when my kids were diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Trusting God at those times is hard, but we do learn a lot. One of the phrases I coined at that point in my life is “Two people can do anything if one of them is God.”Jacob–Matthew 5:14-16 “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”To Jacob this means that it is important to share your talents. Going into Junior high this was hard for him because his friends seemed to outgrow his comic books and it became a little harder for him to fit in socially.Social Interaction ChallengesSocial interactions are often more challenging with kiddos on the autism spectrum–and it seems to be more challenging for the higher functioning kids. Lower functioning kids like Nathan don’t really care if they socialize or not, so it has never been a big deal for him. But the older Jacob got the harder it got for him to socialize, know what to say, or how to talk to others.Jacob confesses that sometimes he just can’t think of words to say.Jacob’s AdviceThe advice Jacob would give to parents and other teens is to “be patient” with kids on the autism spectrum. They need love too and are often lonely. Don’t be afraid to help kids with autism out and be a friend.Another tip: Kids on the spectrum are usually pretty honest–there isn’t much of a filter that goes on between what they think and what they say. They will tell you if you do indeed “look fat in that dress” (whether they should or not).Jacob’s Advice to Parents of Teens on the SpectrumHelp your kids practice social things like getting someone’s phone number, asking a friend if they want to hang out, how to text properly.Noelle’s adviceBe nice to kids on the autism spectrum and try not to be super-sarcastic. The reason for this is they often don’t always understand sarcasm. They are sometimes very literal.Jordan chimes in that he likes to think of kids with autism like Drax on Guardians of the Galaxy. Sarcasm goes right over their heads.Final thoughts from Jordan“Be patient with these kids. They are not kids with autism. They are kids with super-powers. Just like in the movies, sometimes the superheroes get attacked.”Jordan has been doing some classroom observations this semester at an elementary school. There is a sweet girl with autism in one of his classes and she has a wonderful aide that is so patient with her. When Jordan asked the aide what got her into this field, she said, “I see potential in all of these kids.”“If we give these kids chances to change the world, they will.” Often that change is in our own world. My final comments: “Having children with autism has changed me for the better.”Interview with my Husband, JustinJustin’s advice for parents of children with autismYou are in for a different life that perhaps you had planned. There will be challenges, but there will also be some really great things as well. Having kids on the spectrum can be something that will bring you closer to your spouse as you let it. It can also help you find a different level of love and patience than you naturally had. Some of the Lessons Learned in Hard TimesDifferent people process diagnosis differently. Justin was more quick to acknowledge there was something wrong with Nathan while I lived in denial for a little longer. I was terrified of an autism diagnosis. Justin was more terrified as he realized life was going to be different. You will go through the stages of grief. There is also anger. I felt anger. Justin felt cheated out of experiences he was going to have with his son. He felt very sad. When expectations have been changed by diagnosis it is hard to envision a clear future.Take things day by day and week by week. Hold on to hope because these kids are amazing! Some of the Things Justin Learned from our Children with Autism1. We are children of God. When Nathan has had hard times and we have had to just hold him and pray, God has opened Justin’s mind to see what a special person Nathan really is. There is a big, strong, manly and faithful spirit inside of his body and his disability simply impairs his mind, but it is not who he is.2. Knowing who your child really is as a son or daughter of God, helps you to have a different level of patience, love, kindness and understanding. This is who they will be forever.3. These kids are not their disabilities.4. Pray for this gift from God to see your child from a more eternal perspective.“Heaven is close when you are on your knees in a really hard spot.”Another lesson: Be Willing to Try New Things and Support your SpouseI was the more aggressive in wanting to try new things with Nathan. Justin was supportive. Sometimes we found things that worked, and other times we ruled out things that didn’t work.Advice for Dads Ask what you can do to help and keep on trying. The work you are doing is so important and needs a father’s strength and support to accomplish it. This is not a one-person job. If you aren’t pulling your weight, then it is time to step up and be a man. This means talking, listening, offering support, and doing things with your child that are different from what you expected.Help your spouse. They need someone to talk to.Justin subscribes to a Google wordsearch for “autism” each day. This pulls up any articles that come up on autism. This helps him to see what is going on.Join Facebook pages. Sometimes all you can do is listen and offer encouragement, but that is good enough sometimes.Give your spouse a “break” and help.It is also really important to note that full-time caretakers need breaks. If they don’t have a spouse to help them, then they need to get some kind of respite. This is often available through government programs.Justin’s Favorite Bible VerseIsaiah 12:2 “Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.”This verse means that having Jesus Christ in your life is the only way you are going to be able to accomplish anything. It also means that He will give you strength to be the parent of a special needs child who needs your care.“God is strong enough there to help us moment by moment as we learn to parent different children differently.”

Today, we have a special episode. Over the past four years, we have had some awesome guests on the show and you may have missed some of them. So, for the next few weeks, we're going to re-broadcast some of the best episodes of the past 4 years. Jordan Adler shares how he kept going after 11 different MLM companies before succeeding wildly. Also, the leadership advice that all your team members need to hear on MLM Nation Who is Jordan Adler? Jordan Adler has earned millions in network marketing and is currently the #1 income earner in his company. He’s originally from Chicago, Illinois and grew up in a lower middle-income family.  One day, when he was still in his twenties, he read a book about residual income that he picked up at a garage sale for 25 cents.  That little book had more impact on his financial future than his 4-year college degree. Today, Jordan leads a team of over 150,000 distributors with his network marketing organization.  He travels the world supporting his team and coaching new distributors. Jordan is also the author of Beach Money.  In my opinion, it’s one of the best books on the MLM profession and is a must-read for every MLM distributor.  In fact, Kimmy Brooke, who we had on episode 45 mentioned how that book helped make her business really take off. Beach Money teaches you to create an income stream that comes in whether you go to work or not… and Jordan has done just that… He has helped compress 30-year careers into 3-5 years. When Jordan is not at one of his mountain homes in Jerome, Arizona or on Mt.Charleston,  you'll find him relaxing in Santa Monica, California, Las Vegas or possibly in some exotic location. Jordans flies helicopters for fun and was recently accepted into Virgin Galactic's Space program to become one of the first civilians into space. Luke Mickelson, his family and his (Sleep In Heavenly Peace) chapters are on a mission to prevent children from having to sleep on the floor. You can vote for him to be CNN Hero for 2018 here. Vote Here for CNN Top 10 Heroes 2018       Luke.:               We're just humans helping humans and these are little humans and they need our help. Pat V.:              Hey everybody. I'm Pat V. and you're listening to the Rise Above Your Best podcast where I'm normally obsessed with interviewing those that have achieved success in their own pursuits, but also in uncovering the research that demonstrates that great success is available to all of us. And it all starts when we believe in the power of rising above our best. Today's episode is incredible in terms of the guest that's on it. His name is Luke Mickelson and he's such a humble guy in terms of all the publicity he has right now, yet in honesty, when we started this interview, I was so focused on one of the interviews he had with Mike Lee that I introduced him to Mike and he had to stop me and say, “Patrick, you just introduced me as Mike.” He didn't even skip a beat. Fortunately you won't hear me call him Mike in this interview, so thank you for that, Luke. Pat V.:              His story is so inspiring though, talking about how he started this and the power of, as he says, getting up off the couch and what that does for you in terms of inspiring your ability to want to help others and to have a purpose. And this is a guy that I certainly don't think spends too much time sitting on the couch. He talks about the growth that they've had and the incredible experiences that he says you'll never forget when you bring a bed to a child and watch the magic that happens when that happens. So rather than me ramble on, why don't we get started. Pat V.:              Luke, I want to thank you again for taking the time to speak with me on The Rise Above Your Best podcast. I first came across your story over the summer, I believe with your company Sleep in Heavily Peace and it was so inspiring. I think I first reached out to you on Instagram and I followed you just periodically through there. So I was wondering if you could just start off the conversation by going into what really inspired you to start the company in the first place in terms of what you're doing in the mission. Luke:                Sure, absolutely. When I reflect it back, I keep telling people I had no intention of starting some big national thing. I'm just a farm kid from Idaho, that I like helping people and if I saw a need that I could be a part of, I always tried to do my best to jump in. And at the time I was a leader over basically a boy scouts troop ages from 12 to 16 and I was in charge of activities for them. We'd go on camp outs and there was just events that we tried to do together. Anyways, one thing that we found out at one thing that was brought to my attention is there was a member of the community. I didn't know who they were, but I had heard that they had kids sleep on the floor and someone asked if we could help. Luke:                We got with these boys and some of the other leaders and we discussed how we can help and where could we go get bedding and we could go down to the store and buy these by some beds form. No problem, we could fundraise. And I don't know Patrick, just something, a thought came in my head. I said, why don't we just build them? It'd be a fun activity for the kids. And I'm like, yeah, no problem. And I think we could do that. And so everybody was excited about it. I'd never built a bunk bed before in my life, so why not? I had to borrow a lot of my wife's tools. I wasn't a woodworker by any means, but I wasn't afraid of picking up a saw or a drill. Luke:                But the funny thing was this, I went home, my daughter had a bunk bed and I just measured it, copied it. Was going to say, okay, here's kind of the design. And we went to the store and bought the wood, came back and the next couple of days, with just so much fun. I mean it was fun to kind of figure out how to do it and it was fun to see the kids do it, and these 12 year old kids, they were drilling and sanding and staining and doing all this and it was just fun. The funny thing was when we went to deliver it, I didn't go. Some of the other leaders went. I stayed behind and cleaned up my garage. I just had fun doing the bed building, but the next day when the leaders came back and the boys came back and they talked about what an amazing experience it was and to see the kids, how excited they were and in the parents how grateful. Man, I felt jealous. I missed that. Luke:                I just remember it was Christmas time. I was sitting on the couch, it was the next week. And as a parent you always want the best for your kids. But I think for me, I always kind of struggled with, okay, what do I do provide versus what are these kids need to struggle with so they understand what they have. My kids were complaining about the presents they knew I wasn't going to get for them. We're not getting another Xbox. We're not going to spend $60 on another Xbox game. And I was depressed in my own life. Just said, you know what, you got to make it to out there. Let's go build the beds. And I thought, you know what I want? That's exactly what I'm going to do. I want my kids to have that same experience, that same joy. It's Christmas time, we're going to show them how good they have it. I want them to have the same experience of giving back to someone else. Luke:                So we went out as a family for a couple of nights and built another bunk bed and so now what do you do with it? You got this bunk bed you built and I didn't know anybody that had kids sleeping on the floor. I didn't know that was a problem. So we throw it up on this Facebook page as buy sell trade Facebook page and said, hey, does anybody know of a family that has kids sleeping on the floor? This is going to be a Christmas present from us to you. And I fully expected to have every Tom, Dick and Harry asking for these beds. It's pretty bad, everybody's going to want one. And I was just blown away that it couldn't be further from the truth. Luke:                It was totally opposite. I had more people say, what a great idea. Here's a pillow, here's blankets, here's mattresses, here's food, here's toys. It was just crazy. The next thing you knew, I knew I had my wife's salon was floor to ceiling mattresses, sheets, pillows. We had everything that you can think of far more than the wood I had to build more. I remember looking at my wife, I said, this is incredible. There's so many people that want to help. They wish they'd helped. I said, why don't we do more? So we took our Christmas fund that year and we bought nine more, so we ended up making 11 bunk beds that year in my garage. Pat V.:              Isn't it amazing. Here you are, we hear all these stories of people not caring and being selfish and all of a sudden you do something like this and people come out of the woodwork. I mentioned to you before we started this was that my wife does a winter coat drive appear and literally I'll come home and there'll be a bag of winter coats on our porch [crosstalk 00:07:31] left a note knowing that she's doing that. Luke:                Isn't that the inspiring part? For me, it was like, hey, I did this. This is great. It was fun, but I don't think that it would have gone past that had I not recognized you know what? There's other people that were just as crazy and passionate than I was for helping a kid get off the floor. How can you not say that or how can you not follow that? I tell all these chapter presidents that come on now, we really stress with them what we call a balanced chapter because it gets away from you. It was very fast. It becomes addicting. It becomes consuming because of that exact thing. There are so many good things that happen and so many great people with great hearts and willingness to help that you can't help but not want to do more. And equal to the people that are helping you, you want to help more. It's just a big snowball. We always talk about how's that ball rolling for you? And they just laugh because it takes off. Pat V.:              What was it like for you growing up? When you look back on your childhood, was this something that your family did or? Luke:                Not really. I had great parents. I have the best mom in the world. I was always a mama's boy and not ashamed to say that. I grew up in my small town of Kimberley, Idaho, only about 3,700 people. I went to high school here. I played all the sports. I was student body president, my whole family was very involved. I was raised by a single mom. I had two older sisters, a younger sister. I was the best dressed kid in town, I was always involved. I was very good at sports and I always helped out with scouts and my church, I went to church and ... We had a great life. It was fun because it was a single mom with a single income. We didn't sleep on the floor by any means, but we didn't have things like other friends did, but I would never consider myself we were poor. We weren't like some of these families we deal with, but I always had my mom ingrained in us that we need to always look out for other people. Luke:                And even my dad was one of those guys that he had his own challenges in life, but one thing, probably to his dismay really is he's one of these guys that would give his shirt off his back if you needed it. He just was that type of guy and I always felt that there's anything I got from my dad it was that sense of no judgment and if I can help, I certainly will try. And so we had a good childhood. We had a good childhood. Pat V.:              I can see why you must have been the best dressed, with sisters. I'm the youngest of 10 with others. So my clothes were always a little bit bigger fitting into ... Luke:                Well you were top, that's a good value, right? Pat V.:              Yeah. I ate quickly or we didn't get a second chance at the table. Did you ever think this would get this big? Luke:                Oh, no. Like I said, we didn't start this with any inclination of this is going to be some big thing. I always wanted to do more. My wife always bugs me I'm one of those guys that if I start a project, I can't think about anything else until I finish it and of course it goes from one small project to a big project. But we just wanted to do a Christmas activity. That's all this was going to be and there was people that are involved, friends that came in and helped. That's all they want it to be. They just wanted it to be our family little Christmas thing. But the more we realized, the more I realized that there's more kids out there. Luke:                I remember the second year that we did this, we ran out of beds, we were done and there were still people coming in, hey, I know about this guy and I know about this family and I know, but this kid. And I remember telling my wife, I said, “This is killing me.” I said, “I want these people to come and I'll teach them how to build a bed. Let's build a bed together.” And I had kids to come over and we built one for themselves, for the child of their own child right there in my garage. And so I just couldn't stop. We always want to do more and then the process became easier and then it was like, then it was a challenge. Then it was like, hey, we did 15 bunk beds and in eight hours last year, let's do 25 this year and the same amount of time. So we ended up doing that, and then it went from hey, if we change this and do this, we'll speed it up and get even more people involved and guess what, we have more volunteers get involved. Luke:                So instead of five people the first year, just a few friends and then we had family. The next year we had about 20 people. Then it went to 60 people that wanted to come in and then we actually had people that were almost upset because they missed out on the one build day that we had. “We were out of town you got to do that again?” We're like, “No, we do this once a year.” It was about 2016 is when we said, okay, what if we actually did this more than just around Christmas time. What if we, instead of freezing our tushes off at Christmas, what if we built them in the summer, heaven forbid. Right. Luke:                And so we started doing more eagle scout projects, little five bunk builds here. We did a big a youth conference, they call it. We were the service project. And so we had about 60 or 80 youth come by and we built that. It just got easier and more fun. We have more volunteers, we have more community involvement. We got more exposures, which means we got more applications coming in. You just couldn't stop. You do a bill and you have 60 people there. There was always two or three people that hadn't been to a build before that said, oh my gosh, I think my company would love to do this. Two weeks later you get a call and someone says, “Here's $5,000, can you come and do a build at our location?” How can you say no? That really was kind of how we grew it, then in 2017, all of a sudden we had people say, “Hey, what if we did this in our town?” Luke:                And we're like, “Well great, we'll teach you how to do it. It'd be awesome.” “Well let's set you up as a chapter.” And so we started putting on chapters about one every other month in 2017. And so by the end of 2017 when we were actually filming for the returning the favor, I told Mike, we have, I think I said we had nine chapters. Actually we had 12 chapters, but there was only eight or nine that were active, that actually had tools and we're working for stuff. And that was November to ... actually that was all the way to February of this year we only had nine active chapters. Pat V.:              And for those that are listening, I'll have in the show notes, the actual link to return the favor with Mike Rowe and if you don't cry at some point during that, I'm going to check for a pulse on you because I couldn't watch that thing without that [crosstalk 00:15:15]. It was amazing. So well done. Luke:                They did a great job. They had 13 or 14 people, producers and stuff showing up. When they showed up I was like, what the heck is going on? Pat V.:              It was awesome. Luke:                What was funny when they called me, I had done a few interviews because we were putting on more chapters and so I'd have a newspaper once in a while call me or from like Minnesota or from Texas and they want to do ... So you started this and your buddy down here starting this. And so I do these little interviews and then all of a sudden this lady called me. Well, even before that, I was getting a little bit more busy at work and I needed to focus in on that. And then we had these other chapters. I wanted to help them. I couldn't be a chapter president for the local area, for the Twin Falls chapter anymore, so I asked a good friend of mine if you want to be it, and he's like absolutely no question there and they put [inaudible 00:16:11] says she's fabulous. Luke:                But about two months after we did that, he said something funny to me that I know now what he meant, but he's like, “You're about to blow up.” And I was like, what are you talking about? We're doing good right now. Well, what happened was, is they had actually contacted him and said, hey, we're returning the favor. This is what it is. We want to surprise Luke, blah blah, blah. How do I get ahold of him? So this lady calls me and nice girl. She's like, “Hey, do you mind if I do this little video interview with you?” And I'm like, “Video interview with you? That's weird.” Okay. So it was at lunchtime and we jumped on and just did this little video chat and she's like, “Great. Well, thank you for your time.” And I thought, I didn't even think to ask, “Hey, what's this for by the way?” I did them, a few of them and I'm like, okay, this must just be some other deal. Luke:                Well I of forgot about it and went hunting and I was coming down off the mountain and I just happened to get this phone call and it said New York. And I was like, ooh, okay. It's one of those ... do I answer this or not? And we actually were getting applications from all over the country at this time because we have chapters all over and we had more Facebook pages. So more people are seeing it. So I'd get a call once in a while, “Hey, my kid needs a bad, how do I get that?” But I kind of thought that's what it was when I answered it. It was this girl from this media center, she didn't tell me what the name of it was, but what they'd like to do is come out and film me. Luke:                And I'm like, “Oh, you want to come out and film me? Okay. Well, that's cool. Where's this coming out from?” “Oh, it's New York?” I'm like, wait a minute, you're going to fly ... And she used the word “we.” I'm like, you going to fly “we” out from New York? What is this? And they did a pretty good job of hiding it. And the other thing was, is they're like I said, tell you what ... they wanted to come out at a certain time. Pat V.:              So wait a minute. Literally you had no idea when he showed up. That was it. Luke:                That was it. Pat V.:              Priceless. Luke:                Oh yeah. I knew they weren't telling me the whole story, but I mean you turn around this mic we're all looking at you, right? And I thought it was really funny because when I was talking to her on the phone, I said, tell you what, instead of coming out that week, why don't you come up the next weekend and we have a bill going on in Utah so you can actually see what a bill looks like. Luke:                And they were adamant, “No, we want to come and see where it started.” I was like, “Oh, okay, well I don't have anything going on that week and it's in the middle of the week. I've got work, we'll figure it out.” And they were like, “Oh yeah, we'll just take a couple of minutes of your time here and there.” And at that time I remember my good friend Jordan Allan he was the Boise Chapter President and chairman of the board at that time. He says, “You probably should take Thursday, Friday off of that week.” And I'm like, “What do you mean?” Because I kind of told them about it and he was like, “Well, let me find out, let me make a phone call.” And he calls back. He was like, “Yeah, you probably should take Thursday, Friday off that week.” And I'm like, “Okay, if I need to.” Luke:                It was the last two days of my vacation. I didn't have any more. So I did that, and at that point, my employer, it was clear that I was going to have to make a decision whether I was going to stay trying to get SHP going or I was going to have to really back off and focusing on work. And that just wasn't gonna work. I could see the writing on the wall that this was my passion, this is what I wanted to do. So I ended up quitting, which then I had all the time in the world. So that's when our RTF came and there was, I remember they walked in, I'm like, “Holy crap, there's like six of us, there's three cameras, what is this?” Luke:                And it was funny that they never said ... I can read people pretty good. I was like, okay, obviously they're lying to me and they don't want me to know. So this whole two or three days that they filmed me, we had this kind of silent agreement that I didn't ask why they were there because I knew they were going to lie to me. But then you turn around and Sarah asked me, “Hey, can I steal you for a minute?" And I turned around there's [inaudible 00:20:50] and I'm like holy cow. What do you do? What do you say? Pat V.:              And you had just given notice that you done? Luke:                Mm-hmm (affirmative). Yeah, like about 10 days. Maybe it was a week before that. It was November first and they came out November 14th. So it was about two weeks before that. And the crazy thing, here's the funny thing. I quit, I was excited because I'm going to do this full time and we're going to get this rolling, and this is going to be great. But everybody knew about returning the favor and Scott and Jordan told everybody, “Don't talk to Luke because we don't want anybody to know.” So think about it here. I just quit my job, I'm excited and then no one would talk to me. No one emailed me, no one responded my texts, I just sit there going, what have I done? It's funny looking back at it, but it was kind of nerve wrecking there for a while. I won't lie to you. Pat V.:              But there must be, just watching you on that show, the passion that you see. There must have been the thing that said ... and I know your family obviously must've been behind you when you decided to go in that direction and you just, you have faith, right? You just know that this is the way it's meant to be. Luke:                Well, I came home from work after I was told that I need to make a decision here. I came home and told my wife and I ... and I knew this was coming. It wasn't a surprise, and I said, “It's time.” My biggest problem Patrick was, this was a sacrifice that didn't just affect me or else that would have been easy. For me I was like, I can live in a shade, I don't care. That money and that kind of stuff, I don't care about that kind of stuff. But, I got three kids, I've got a wife, I've got a mortgage [inaudible 00:22:45] of the world. I got health insurance, there's all that stuff. And my partner in life looks at me and she says, “No question, you have to do this.” And I just broke down and I just said, “Thank you.” And I tell you what, it was really funny. I was stressed to the max, I was worried to the max, but I was never more happy. Pat V.:              Can you imagine, you almost in a completely different area, but going off on my own and having that same support, you wish everybody could feel that. That sense of it's just a calling. You just know that you're going in the right direction. Luke:                Well, and that's what makes it easy. I look back and for those who haven't experienced yet and I call it the “get off the couch.” For those that haven't experienced getting off the couch yet, these decisions, they're tough. That decision to get out of the couch is tough, but once you make it like you and the other entrepreneurs and all of these, once you make that decision, you're like the best thing I've ever done in my life. And then the decision seemed like it was easy. Pat V.:              And as you're now, things just, you do the work, you've got the faith, the expectation, and it just falls into place. Not without struggle certainly, but it just falls into place. Luke:                Yeah. Pat V.:              How did you decide to do the chapters? Luke:                When Jordan came down that first year and helped me build that bed, he wanted to do it in his own hometown of Boise, which is about two hours from us. And I said, “Well, great. Yeah, I've got the tools. Why don't you set up a build day? I'll come up.” And actually we didn't call them build days at that time. I said, “Why don't you just set up a day and I'll come up with the tools and we'll build beds up there.” And I can't remember when we decided to call it the Boise Chapter, it hadn't been the third year because the third year we built Christmas 2012. We built Christmas 2013 and we decided, hey, let's stop trying to finance this all on our own because we've had people that were starting to bring in donations right? Luke:                Someone said, "Hey, if you were a fiber one through three, you could have corporations donate to you and you wouldn't have to pay for yourself." And we're like, "Oh, that's a great idea." So that was the only reason why we became a nonprofit is just so we could get donations locally so we didn't have to pay for ourselves. And in doing so if I recall, that's when we said, hey, you know what, why don't we just call yours a chapter. We got the Twin Falls chapter, and you're the Boise chapter. And so we did that to then the next year we did a build outside of Boise and Twin. We did it in a town called Pocatello, which is about an hour and a half, two hours the opposite direction. And a friend of mine wanted to start a chapter there and so we started one, but it kind of fell through. He got busy and anyways we ended up not doing a chapter. We did a build and it was a great build, but we didn't do a chapter. Luke:                So we kind of have this, I'm not going to say a bad taste in our mouth. We just had a bad first go at as expanding to another city. So that was about 2014 and then 2015/16 all came along and we started doing more builds and got the process more under our belt and then we start getting a little bit more donations. Now we are up into the teens, the almost $20,000 a year of donations, which was just, it just blew us away. I remember thinking, what if we got up to $25,000? We would build, we'd take all world. Pat V.:              In bunk beds. Luke:                In bunk beds. We'd take over the world. It was just really fun, but then we had more people. I don't know what it was, it was just something quick. We were just ready for it. And that's happened a lot with SHP. It was just the right time. And we had a chapter that wanted to start. We started it, and then as soon as people saw that we went to San Diego and started a chapter, I didn't get home that weekend before I had calls. “Hey, you're starting to chapter? I want to talk to you about starting one.” And next thing you know, we had Minnesota, we had Maryland, we had Texas, we had Utah, Washington. I mean it was all over. Pat V.:              And if someone wants to become a chapter, what do they need to do? Luke:                So when RCF hit this year, February 13th, we had over 2000 chapter requests. And so we actually had to pull the link off of the website because it was too much. But now if anybody wants to start a chapter, they just go to ... you have to type it in. You can't find on the website anymore, But it's shpbeds.org/start-a-chapter. And when you click on that or when you select that and click on it, you're entering just a little bit information. Name, email address, but it'll prompt you to watch a webinar. And that webinar is about a 5,000 foot view of what a chapter president does, what SHP does, how we do it, the whole nine yards. And then after you watch that, if you still want to be a chapter president, then it'll prompt you to fill out of a new chapter request application. Luke:                That application is more just so we get to know you and you get to know a lot of what goes into being a chapter president. For example, rate yourself on how you think you will do raising money. How do you feel like you are handling a group of people or talking in front of the media, that kind of stuff because all that stuff's going to happen. And then once they fill that out and they submit it, then they get placed into a region. And we have the country broken up and regions and each region has a regional director. And that regional director holds other webinars like every other week or so, and people are invited to those zoom meetings and that's where they learn the 500 foot view of what a chapter is and blah, blah blah. And we teach them how to raise money. So the ultimate goal is they need to come to Twin Falls and that's where they get their formal physical training. Pat V.:              What's the farthest call you've had so far? Luke:                Japan. We have a lot of requests right now coming out of Canada. I bet you were over 100 of chapters request in Canada. We've had ... I mean all over Germany, London, Japan, of course, Mexico. And there's probably way more than we know. When people can go to the website, they fill out a general inquiry email and those get sent to my assistant and she'll filter those through and she knows that a lot of times we just can't handle that right now. We're trying to just get our baseline and the country secured. And once we get that and we got some really cool stuff coming up overseas that are gonna really help us springboard into globally setting up chapters. We've got some IRS things that we need to make sure we're covered on before we dive into that pool. Pat V.:              Got it. Now I noticed, I looked on the map, the one that that was available. It looked like Massachusetts was the closest that I saw, because you know I'm up in Maine. Luke:                Yeah, come on Maine. Pat V.:              I was going to say, I mean- Luke:                I think we had one inquiry from Maine of being a chapter president, but yeah, that whole far northeast area, yeah. We're in 40 states now. There's four or five of them that are up there. Pat V.:              So it was Massachusetts, is that the closest? Luke:                Correct, that's the closest. Plus Boston, what else we got up there? Middlesex, Massachusetts. Pat V.:              What do you recommend for somebody that says, look, I want to be involved in this thing, but I don't think I could do a chapter. Luke:                And we get a lot of that and that's great. I tell everybody, if you want it the quickest way, you can either go to our website, find out which chapters close to you, you can hit the contact page on our website and email that chapter president directly, or you can go to the Facebook page and type in sleepinheavenlypeace/ whatever chapters closest to you and you can message them. There you can see their activity, what's going on. But I'll warn you, I'll warn you right now and these chapters need help. The best chapters that we have, the ones that build the most beds are the ones that have the biggest team and the reason why it's because it is addicting and it is fun. And Patrick, when you go and deliver a bunk bed to a kid that doesn't have one that I promise you will change. Will change who you are. It changed me. I just was a different person afterwards and I couldn't build beds fast enough. Pat V.:              So along with the beds is there anything next? Dressers or anything to go along with that are just strictly beds. Luke:                No, strictly beds. That first year we got toys and we got food and we made a whole build for Christmas. I remember the next year where we going to do the same thing. We kind of did it. We didn't do it as much of the other stuff, but I remember I went to another nonprofit because we started kind of talking about this nonprofit thing and how do we do it. So I went to a nonprofit here locally that was kind of ... They were well known. They supply pretty much anything for family, whether it's coats and shoes and socks and clothes and everything. I walked into this house and I was so overwhelmed with all of the stuff. It looked like a garage sale. There as volunteers and they're trying to sort stuff and I just, I went back and talked to Jordan and my wife and I was like, you know what? I think it's probably best that we stick to one thing and we do it the best. Pat V.:              Stay in your lane. Luke:                Stay in your lane. We use that phrase a lot and look what happened. So now, we encourage people, if you need a desk or you need something else or whatnot, here are some agencies that you can go. But you know what, it's very clear and we want everybody to know. It's very clear that we provide beds for kids. That's what we do and we feel like we do it the best. Pat V.:              So last question for you. The logo, it's a great logo. Luke:                Isn't it? Pat V.:              It really is. It's a great logo. I'm getting one of those hats. I love it. Luke:                Absolutely, I'll give you one. The funny thing about the logo, where it came from when we first delivered that is actually the second year we delivered the beds. No, think about this, it was the first year. My sisters pretty is artsy [inaudible 00:34:21]. She's kind of an artist and she made this tag that we're going to put on all the beds. Because hey, this is an SHP. At that time it was SIHP. So here's what looks like to be a misspelled word ship. It was SIHP. And we were like, that isn't going to work. The next year my buddy's shows up and he actually made a brandy iron of SHP. And so we start branding these beds with SHP, and I'm like, “Oh, we need to make a logo, and SHP would be a great one. What do you think?” And my wife was like, “Yeah, that's great.” And I said, “And you know what? We have a perfect opportunity to make the H a bunk bed.” And Patrick, no one loved it. No one liked the idea. They hated it. Pat V.:              Yeah? Luke:                Yeah, I'm serious. I'm like, man, if there's one hill I was going to die on, it was going to say, “Guys, you can do anything you want, but that H is going to be a freaking bunk bed.” And so one of my friends, his wife, she's kind of a graphic designer. She was a photographer but she liked to play with it and I kind of gave her assignments said “Hey, why don't you and I work on this?” And so she'd say, “What do you want?” I said, “Well, I want the SHP but I want the H to be bigger than the S and P, and I want it to look like a bunk bed.” So she put that together and then she put a little star on it because [crosstalk 00:35:50] the peace. The original logo, the sleep and the peace was kind of a smiley face around the SHP and so that's what our logo was. Luke:                That's where it came from. And then when RTF came around or when they start filming that, my buddy that came on board was an actual graphic designer is what he did for a living. And he's like, “Yeah, we need to tweak a few things." And I'm like, “Well, you can tweak one or two but you're not touching anything else.” So yeah, it was fun. That's a good logo. And we're really big on branding. We want to make our message very clear. So people that see it, they recognize that they know what we're about. And it helps our chapter presidents that are struggling to try to raise money. We can cross brand from chapter to chapter because it's done the exact same way. Pat V.:              The recipe is there. Luke:                Yeah. And we wanted to make the onboarding process for these chapters as easy as possible, as simple as possible. They don't have to worry about registering with the IRS or doing CPA work or insurance or any of that. We do all of that for them. All they need to do, we tell chapter presidents, you have three main focuses. Raise money so you can build beds and deliver beds. That's it. Don't worry about anything else. It's the reason why we can onboard chapter so fast. It's a reason why they're successful so quickly. We're going to reach 13,000 volunteers here in a couple of weeks and that's done because we've got chapters all across the country with great people that want help. Pat V.:              Wow, you're doing great stuff. My final question now, I know one of your favorite quotes must be "no kid sleeps on the floor." Is there another one that inspires you? Luke:                I think I get asked a lot, why do we do what we do? Or why did you do what you did? And I simply say, "I do it because you know what? We are a group of people. We're just humans helping humans and these are little humans and they need our help." So I think my second most favorite saying I guess is what I share. When I tell people that I say, "Look, if you want real joy, stop looking at yourself and help someone else out." And that really is exactly how I feel. True joy comes from helping other people through service. I would encourage anybody, if you're down in the dumps, if you want more of life, take some time to see how you can help someone else out. And I promise you it'll put a smile on your face. Pat V.:              Yeah. So a lot of the stuff that I do on the leadership side, it speaks to a lot of the research that backs up that the happiest people are the people that have a purpose not for themselves, but for somebody else. Luke:                Well said. Well said. Pat V.:              Luke, I got to tell you. I was looking forward to this ever since you said yes, and I really with everything you have going on right now, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time for this and you're an inspiration. So thank you. Luke:                Well, thank you. Thank you for your time and appreciate the willingness to help SHP spread a little word out there so we can help others. Pat V.:              And good luck with the voting. I know I've voted several times and put it out on Facebook too. And that's tomorrow. Does it close tomorrow? Luke:                Closes tomorrow at I think midnight eastern, something like that. Yeah. So tomorrow's the last day. Pat V.:              Okay. Luke:                Yeah, please vote. Please vote for us. Pat V.:              I'm going to. I'm going to go back on again. Luke:                Alright buddy. Pat V.:              Hey, thanks a lot. Luke:                Thanks Patrick. Pat V.:              I hope you really enjoyed this episode. As you can see, Luke, his company, what they do, Sleep in Heavily Peace, they're doing such great work and it's such a niched concept of what they're doing. As he said, stay in your lane. They're doing three things; raise money, build beds, deliver beds. And that's allowed them to really stay focused and fill a need that is so great everywhere. You can see how much it's continued to grow, so maybe you'll be making the next bed. And that's how you'll rise above your best. Again, if you have enjoyed this episode, I'll ask you go on, leave a rating. And certainly subscribe if you haven't by this point or forward this on to somebody that you know that may be interested in getting involved. Jordan asks questions about transgender people and the transgender community, and is schooled by second time guest, and podcast host, Callie Wright.  Toby falls asleep on the job. Nobody would have known that if it wasn't written in this description, so there is really no reason to even mention it in the first place. I could just simply highlight all of this and delete it from the description, but something is telling me that we need to keep things honest and mention that Toby fell asleep on the job and he let this podcast record for 3 hours and 32 minutes. In the raw footage you can hear Jordan talking about a co-worker of his named Albert Anderson, and how he peed on the floor of the bathroom because he was texting whilst peeing. At the 2 hour and 53 minute mark of the raw podcast footage, you hear Toby wake up, come out of his booth and ask Alexa, "Alexa, what time is it?". He leaves the room and returns about 40 minutes later and says "oh shit, it's still recording". When Jordan found out about this, he really wanted to put it in the show, but Toby threatened to quit if his voice is ever recorded and put on the edited version of the podcast. Now you may be wondering, "well who the hell is writing this then, since it's not Jordan or Toby?" I could leave it a mystery, but I'll just say that it is me, Jordan. Your next question might be, "why, the hell is Jordan talking about himself in third person?" Well, I didn't really have a plan, but since we couldn't put Toby's voice on the podcast, I thought I would talk about how we were going to put his voice on the podcast but couldn't, and the three day struggle of me and Toby going back and forth about adding the little part of him saying "oh shit, it's still recording". I wanted to put it at the very end of the show after about 8 seconds of silence. Kind of like those CD's that have that hidden track that lasts 48 seconds, but you have to let that last track play for 8 minutes before you get to hear it. You wonder why the track is 16 minutes long, then it all makes sense once you hear the hidden track. Callie Wright is a fucking fantastic speaker. I wish I could speak so graceful and choose the perfect vocabulary that she does, instead of mumbling and stuttering over my words trying to get my brain to get my thoughts past my fucking tongue. Maybe I'll do vocal exercises for episode 10. This was such a good interview. Follow Callie Wright on her podcasts. www.gaytheistmanifesto.comwww.thequeerside.comTwitter- @gaytheistcallieMaybe I'll write these descriptions from here on, since Toby likes to sleep. You can learn a lot from a sociopath. How to be charismatic, charming, convincing... They know how you think. “That’s the mindset we want,” Jordan Harbinger said. He was kidnapped twice. Once in Serbia. Once in Mexico. He talked his way out both times. “We knew there was a problem,” he said. “The cop gets in my face and says, ‘In your country, can you walk around with no identification and no passport? Tell me the Goddamn truth.’” Jordan was in Serbia teaching refugees English. “Yeah, we don’t need any form of identification at all,” he said. The cop turned to his friend and in Serbian said, “I guess they really are free over there. I had no idea.” They didn’t know Jordan spoke Serbian. He ended up in a basement. Pipes were sticking out of the wall. There was no water for miles. Wires were everywhere. And Jordan was tied to a chair. They threatened to burn his eyes with a cigarette. The guard had a club and rakia, a homebrewed liquor. Jordan talked his way out of going blind and into having a drink with his kidnapper. I always say advice is autobiography. Now Jordan’s made a career teaching ultimate survival skills through his podcast, “The Art of Charm.” I asked him, “How can I be more likable?” “I think you’re very likable…” Later he said I have “an un-punchable face.” And I agreed. When Jordan was single, he saw a girl texting on the train. There was no cell service. I tried guessing what he said to her, “‘I didn’t get your text, can you re-send it?’” “No, no that’s a great, pick-up line, but I wanted to disarm her. So I said something like, ‘Are you gonna write the whole book on your phone?’” I asked him the top 5 takeaways from his podcast. He said everyone’s decision-making process is different. “Everyone gets to the top differently.” Jordan’s interviewed world leaders like General Hayden, the former head of the NSA and CIA, Super Bowl MVP Hines Ward, and 500+ more. They all have stories. We all do. You could even self-publish yours. That’s what I did. My life changes every six months. Maybe yours will too. I even wrote a guide called “The Ultimate Checklist Before Self-Publishing.” You can get the checklist now (for free). Write a book. Sell it for 99 cents. And email me when you get your first sale. I’ll tell you even more about this on Saturday. I’m doing a special bonus podcast with Jordan. You’ll hear his two kidnapping stories and you’ll learn about the 20 steps I took to become a best selling author. (If you don’t want to miss it subscribe now.) But for now here’s Jordan’s top 5 takeaways from “The Art of Charm.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Michael Jordan has been a phenomenal basketball player. He's moved to play baseball but he never outshined his performance in the NBA. And there's a very simple explanation to that correlates to many sales peoples. When Jordan was in the NBA, he played on his strengths. His dunks and fade-away shots where his killer moves that made him who he is in the NBA, a legend. But when he played in the baseball, you probably never even heard any buzz about his name in the game. Why? Because baseball is not his strength.   In today's episode, we're going to talk about strengths (and weaknesses) and hopefully at the end of the day, you'll learn:   Who is an abused sales person? Why you need to be a retriever type of sales person Why you need to know the type of sales people in your team Why authenticity is the best sales policy   If you're interested in digging deeper into the Art of Sales, being sure to subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher to get the latest updates when new episodes are published.

Jordan Matter is a photographer in New York City and the photographer/author of the stunning book Dancers Among Us, A Celebration of Joy in the Everyday. It is evident in all that we know of Jordan that he truly does celebrate joy in the everyday. He loves his life, his family, and his job. Photography was not always his passion; baseball and acting took those spots earlier in his life. That began to change for him however, after viewing an exhibit by photojournalist Henri Cartier-Bresson. Moved by the stories of humanity the images portrayed, he picked up the camera first as a hobby, then as a passion. Later, looking through a friend's routine and mundane headshots (from another photographer)he was inspired to grab his camera and photograph her. Soon, his career as a portrait and headshot photographer boomed. His idea for "Dancers Among Us" came from watching his three-year old son play with a toy bus and figurines. Watching his son's imagination at work he thought about creating photographs that would show the world as if through his eyes. The people in the images would be alive and in the moment, celebrating all aspects and emotions of everyday life. Soon after, he attended a dance performance and knew immediately his subjects. When Jordan began work on "Dancers Among Us", he had no dance photography experience. Anyone who is either a dancer or involved with dance knows that it is not easy to capture a dancer in motion for a photo that conveys the true movement, which makes this work just that much more amazing. As he was formulating the idea for the book, Jordan was hired by Jeffrey Smith of the Paul Taylor Dance Company to photograph his headshots. He told him about his idea of photographing dancers in everyday situations. Jeffrey Smith loved the idea and convinced ten company members to collaborate with Jordan. The book eventually involved 200 dancers photographed around the United States. It was three years in the making and at one point almost a goner until Workman Publishing took a chance on it. Their gamble paid off. "Dancers Among Us" reached the New York Times extended Best Sellers list in its first week, selling out on Amazon within 24 hours. The book is filled with images of dancers in everyday life experiences, augmented by thoughtful quotes and text.
