An Abyss Below Every Floor ep.741 Born to multiracial heritage in the same Honolulu hospital as Barack Obama, A. J. Payler earned his English degree from the University of Hawai'i before eking out various livings as a musician, technical writer, radio broadcaster, military contractor, audio engineer, comic store clerk, short order cook, press clipping agent, music journalist, and congressional archival assistant, managing to shake hands with luminaries from Kurt Vonnegut to Lemmy from Motörhead along the way. Since turning his attention to writing full-time he has released the novels The Killing Song, World of Heroes, Lost in the Red, Terror Next Door, and Bank Error in Your Favor; his short writing has been published by Suspect, Twenty-Two Twenty-Eight, Flipside, Songwriter's Market, Creepy podcast, Cloaked Press, Short Story (Substack), Flash in a Flash, EYE, Tailspins, Razorcake and more. He has also released several albums of original music and opened for artists such as Silkworm and the Schizophonics, continuing to perform live as often as time permits. In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors. Are you feeling stuck in endless busy work? Are you pushing your biggest goals aside, only to feel drained at the end of the day? Do you have big dreams and know what you want, but you're just not moving forward? Today's podcast is going to change all of that. Nikki is honored and excited to have her good friend and previous guest, Liz Hartke, on the show today in this Mastering Excellence Exclusive.  Liz has helped thousands of entrepreneurs grow their businesses and unlock their God-given potential. She's the founder and CEO of Luminary Leadership Co., where she works alongside her team and husband while homeschooling their four kids. Her expertise and unconventional wisdom have been featured in major publications such as Forbes, Entrepreneur, and more. She's mentored top business leaders and graced stages worldwide. When Nikki thinks of leadership and how to do it in an authentic, genuine, imperfect yet perfect way, Liz is the shining example. Liz explains how to transform from a busy entrepreneur to a visionary CEO. It all starts with taking on the identity of the visionary CEO. Many of us have the identity of the busy entrepreneur and need to elevate our identity to the next level. Her system begins with the seven blocks of a visionary CEO. We learn about two of the most important blocks that, when implemented, set up our schedule for success. She also shares a technique for tackling tedium without draining our energy or time.  Liz shares examples from her own schedule and breaks down everything in an easy-to-understand way. Tune in to elevate your identity and take your schedule to the next level! Nikki invites you to join the Sales Maven Society. Take advantage of this opportunity for you and Nikki to work together. Nikki is also in the Luminary Leadership incubator program. [05:49] - What must I do to create a profitable visionary schedule? Who does this well and who do I need to be? [07:01] - Focusing on the do, not the who. Are you the same person who set previous goals that you didn't achieve? [08:14] - Making decisions drains our energy. Take on an identity where that decision is made for you. [09:30] - Your schedule is the easiest thing to leverage whether or not you're going to achieve the things you say you want to achieve. [10:03] - So many of us consciously embrace the identity of a busy entrepreneur. Success is not going to be accessed as a busy entrepreneur. [11:01] - The path to more profitability and peace is one of less, not more. It's just getting laser-focused on the right less. [12:09] - It's about embracing the identity of being the visionary CEO and not the busy entrepreneur. It's about less is more and making that less really count. [12:42] - Liz explains the first critical CEO block. Not dedicating your precious time to anything but action is the guaranteed one way ticket into perpetual busy entrepreneurship. You can't expect to elevate to a level of success with go go go productivity.  [15:39] - The first CEO block is the intentional CEO block. This is a dedicated block of stepping into the day being the leader you want to become.  [19:46] - The opposite of reaction is intentionality. Liz's first few blocks of the day are phone-free. [20:56] - You're not allowing any stimulus in your block that takes you away from being intentional about how you feel going into your day. [21:07] - Create block number one or your CEO block in a way that works for you. Liz takes 3 hours to get herself ready for the day and that includes family time. [24:22] - Liz's favorite block is the sweet spot block. It's where you stay in your zone of genius and do the work that makes you come alive which also moves the needle. [25:11] - This should be your favorite block of the day and the block that pushes forward your life's work. 95% of our time is spent on tasks and things that don't light us up. [27:01] - Dedicate at least an hour or minimally two hours to this work. Liz has worked up to four hours a day.  [29:16] - When you hone in on what you're put on this Earth to do, you can't be ignored. Momentum happens and you are so crystal clear about what you are supposed to be doing. [29:38] - Have your sweet spot block in the first part of the day. [37:34] - Save your efficiency block for when you're tired. Don't give your best energy towards it. No more than an hour of your day should go to efficiencies. [41:03] - Set a timer and get it done. You have to be efficient because you only have this much time. [45:28] - Something new for Liz is her depth of faith. She's been prioritizing time to be in stillness and prayer. [53:10] - Liz shares details about her Free Live Workshop. She'll break everything down in more detail and share all seven CEO blocks. She also shares her schedule and how she uses it. Love your enemies, love your friends, love your bosses, love those who persecute you like Jesus told us all to do. 5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins

In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins is joined by Dr. Angie Ward, a leadership author and teacher with nearly 30 years of experience in church, parachurch, and Christian higher education ministry. She also serves as Director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Denver Seminary. They discuss the concept of adaptive leadership and its importance in today's rapidly changing culture and churches. Dr. Ward shares insights and practical tools for agile and adaptive leadership, including managing leadership anxiety and understanding the emotional aspects of change management. BEST QUOTES “Especially when it comes to change and leading an organization, you're going to have people that want to transfer their anxiety to you. It's at that point that you must have a barrier up to be able to maintain a clean and clear point of view.” – Dr. Angie Ward “Anytime there's change, that introduces disequilibrium into the system, and then disequilibrium seeks stability.” – Dr. Angie Ward “When you have everybody bringing their own things into a change situation in the organization, then then it's not just what's going on in the organization, but what's going on in every individual person and in between every person in the system.” – Dr. Angie Ward “We need to do that deep change on our own before we try to lead a system, an institution, an organization, or a group through that deep change.” – Dr. Angie Ward Nobody's going to say, “Let me give you extra time. Let me protect your time.” You must do it. You must block out those things.” – Dr. Angie Ward “I wish I would've been aware of God saying, “This is who you are”, instead of all the external internal voices because that causes a lot of turmoil and doubt and trying to be somebody I'm not created to be.” – Dr. Angie Ward RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Uncharted Leadership: 20 Case Studies to Help Ministry Leaders Adapt to Uncertainty by Dr. Angie Ward At Your Best: How to Get Time, Energy, and Priorities Working in Your Favor by Carey Nieuwhof Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport Managing Leadership Anxiety: Yours and Theirs by Steve Cuss Leading Change by John P. In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Dan Iten are joined by Mark Satterfield, the Lead Pastor at the Glade Church in Mount Juliet, Tennessee. They focus on the five steps to getting things done, which include reducing, prioritizing, planning, executing, and measuring tasks. Satterfield also highlights the importance of having a vision framework, utilizing task management and productivity apps, learning from CEOs, reducing clutter, saying no to non-priority tasks, and delegating effectively. The 5 steps to getting things done are: Reduce: This step involves evaluating tasks and prioritizing them based on importance and relevance. (3:07) Prioritize: After reducing tasks, it is important to prioritize the remaining tasks based on their significance and alignment with vision and values. (14:18) Plan: The planning step involves creating a schedule or a plan to allocate time and resources to the prioritized tasks. This includes using strategies like the Eisenhower matrix to determine what is important and urgent. (22:56) Execute: Once the plan is in place, executing and working towards accomplishing the tasks is important. This step focuses on acting and following through with the plan. (26:16) Measure: The final step is to measure the progress and effectiveness of the tasks. This includes evaluating whether the tasks were successfully completed and adjusting if needed. (38:08) You can follow Mark on Twitter @sattymark or at his website at marksatterfield.blog. BEST QUOTES "The reduction of insignificant tasks and clutter in physical and digital spaces also leads to greater efficiency in work." – Mark Satterfield "The evaluation and elimination of insignificant tasks should be a constant habit for leaders." – Mark Satterfield “One of the craziest things that can take place in the leader's life is working on things that you accomplish for the day only to walk out and not know that those things really aren't important for your own personal mission or the mission of the church.” – Mark Satterfield “There's work that we're doing that technically shouldn't be our work, you should be delegating it to others because it's actually their work.” – Mark Satterfield “If you're a leader of an organization and you're trying to think through your measures or evaluate what's getting done, that is only going to be as strong as the vision framework you have for your organization.” – Mark Satterfield “You do not rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems.” – James Clear RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown Building a Second Brain: A Proven Method to Organize Your Digital Life and Unlock Your Creative Potential by Tiago Forte At Your Best: How to Get Time, Energy, and Priorities Working in Your Favor by Carey Nieuwhof Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear High-Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become That Way by Brendon Burchard The Compound Effect: Jumpstart Your Income, Your Life, Your Success by Darren Hardy

His latest book is “The Revolution That Wasn't: GameStop, Reddit and the Fleecing of Small Investors.” The frenzy in meme stocks in 2021 was perceived as a Robin Hood style raid on Wall Street. Reddit forums filled with young men holding "diamond hands" taking down the financial industry. The truth was far more nuanced. We also took a detour to look at insider trading by members of Congress.Spencer Jakab writes for and edits the Heard on the Street Column at The Wall Street Journal. He was Deputy Editor between 2015 and 2019 and wrote the Journal's daily investing column, Ahead of the Tape, for four years before that. Spencer spent four years at Britain's Financial Times writing the “Lex” and “On Wall Street” columns and got his start in financial journalism at Dow Jones Newswires where he was part of a SABEW-winning team covering energy markets. Spencer is the author of two books on the plight of individual investors, both published by the Portfolio imprint of Penguin Random House. “Heads I Win, Tails I Win: Why Smart Investors Fail and How To Tilt the Odds in Your Favor” (2016) and “The Revolution That Wasn't: GameStop, Reddit and the Fleecing of Small Investors.” His first career was in finance where he spent years as a top-rated emerging market stock analyst. Episode 224 Hey there, my friend! I'm glad you are here.  I recently listened to a book on audible, At Your Best: How to Get Time, Energy, and Priorities Working in Your Favor, by Carey Nieuwhof, which inspired this episode.  With the holidays coming up and so many of us taking on too much and saying yes to everyone but ourselves, it's time to have a conversation about saying no.  In this episode, I briefly discuss a personal update and what my family has been going through for the past couple of months before leading into the topic of saying no.  I also talk about obligations and being an obliger from The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin as I walk you through how to implement a six-step (simple) strategy from At Your Best that you can start practicing today.  Please email me if you're in the San Diego area and would like to meet up.  To read this episode's full show notes, please click here.    Let's stay in touch! We discussed why it's essential to figure out what you're best at and keep those talks in your green zone when you're most likely to be at the top of your game. Why we need to be intentional about developing our gifts as leaders, recognize that they are dynamic, and focus on growing and using those skills.   “My position on technology — and I've been an early adopter — is that technology makes a wonderful servant and a terrible master.” - Carey Nieuwhof   “Years ago, I realized that technology was starting to run me, and when it was running me, it was ruining me. Because I was never really on, and never really off.” - Carey Nieuwhof   “Workaholism is the most rewarded addiction in America. If you're drinking at work or an alcoholic, you get fired. But if you're a workaholic, you get a raise, and you get a promotion.” - Carey Nieuwhof    This Week on The Wow Factor: Carey's experience of living in small-town Ontario and the work ethic that his Dutch parents instilled in him Some of Carey's first entrepreneurial ventures The gift of making time and being intentional about your actions Why Carey decided to go to law school and how that experience led to a call to ministry Carey's podcast and blog — why he started them and how he grew them despite fierce competition The danger of too much convenience and why our devices are such a drain on our energy Ways Carey detaches from technology and redirects his focus Why Carey wholeheartedly agrees with Cal Newport that the ability to focus and do profound work is now a superpower Why Carey took a month off as a ‘tech sabbatical' and deleted his email app How to make sure your phone blocks all but the essential contacts How Carey divides the day into green, yellow and red zones in At Your Best: How to Get Time, Energy, and Priorities Working in Your Favour Leaders tend to reach their zenith in their 30s, then coast for the rest of their lives — Carey shares why it's so important to keep on learning and developing throughout our careers   Carey Nieuwhof's Words of Wisdom: Time off won't heal you when the problem is how you spend your time. A lot of us keep living for that week at the ocean, and we know how to do time off well, but we do not know how to do our time on well. In this episode: Living the expat life as a global family. Lisa and her family have lived on four different continents and her girls were actually born in France! Bringing people together. Lisa has always loved connecting people from different areas of her life. Being a part of a community. Being part of a circle, having a place, and feeling like you belong, can be life changing in the best way! Expat life can be both amazing and tough. There can be those “pinch me” moments along with those difficult and challenging times. Considering the expat life for your family? Do your homework and learn the language. Learning opportunities facilitate connection. There's so much value in enjoying a night out and learning something new. You do not have to go it alone. She also has her Master's degree in Educational Leadership. She is all about personal development, learning, reading, podcasts, and audio books. Lisa says that “We connect better when we are learning new things together.” Wine, Women, and Well-Being events are both a night out and an opportunity to learn something may it be from a hands-on activity or a listening to a speaker and learning from their experiences. You can enjoy a glass of wine and also get a takeaway. Learning makes us better people whether we are young, old, or anywhere in-between! IT'S (MORE THAN) OKAY TO NOT HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS Lisa and her family's recent move has taught her the importance of letting her kids see this. Moving back to France, from Calgary, her girls are now older and they understand more. They are also fully functional in French which, although she is doing amazingly well, Lisa is not. Lisa's daughters have seen her practice what she preaches with Wine, Women & Well-Being. She often says things like: You can do hard things. Try your best and be brave. Try something new. They see Lisa fumbling her way through conversations in French or figuring out where to go. This has been humbling for Lisa. However, she also knows that it is a good example to show her kids that their parents are real people. They don't know all the answers and that is okay. It's given her kids a very human side to this new experience. FINDING COMMUNITY & CONNECTION When Lisa and her husband moved from Canada overseas to France she felt very alone. Her husband works for a French company and Lisa didn't speak French. When they lived on compounds in other countries, they were French speaking compounds. Lisa couldn't speak the language of the country she ...

In today's episode, we cover peak performance and burnout with Carey Nieuwhof. Carey is the author of the best selling “Didn't See It Coming: Overcoming the Seven Greatest Challenges That No One Expects and Everyone Experiences” and the host of one of our favorite podcasts, The Carey Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast. Introduction With all of the pressure to increase output and creativity these days, burn out is a real threat, so what are the warning signs you're entering a dangerous burn out cycle, how can you avoid it, and how can you improve your skill set without risking burn out? What to Listen For Introduction and Carey's history with burnout – 2:00 How do you manage the risks of burnout when building a business or focusing on your career? What does it mean to be at your best? – 14:10 What is one of the biggest myths about building a fulfilling career and life? What forms does burnout take and how can you recognize when you need help? The stress spiral and how to avoid it – 25:09 What are the warning signs you are stuck in the destructive stress spiral? What are the three types of energy zones we all have in a day and how do you identify them so you know when to do your best work and when to avoid doing work? Always be working on your gifts and skills – 43:45 How do world-class performers work to improve their talents and abilities? What do many of us allow our lives to be filled with that we should be saying no to? What exercise can you use to easily structure your week ahead of time so you don't end up feeling overwhelmed or burned out? Why should you set goals for yourself if you want to learn how to start saying no effortlessly? If you are feeling burnt out at work, it might have less to do with how much you're working and more to do with when you're trying to work. It has been shown that humans have a specific window of peak energy during the day, and if you try to push yourself too far outside of that window, the effects can be detrimental to your productivity as well as your physical and mental health. By structuring your day around your individual peak window, you can revitalize your passion and productivity while easily saying no to work and appointments that don't serve you. Jody Holland received his B.A. in Communications from Angelo State University in 1994. He has received specialized training and certifications in physiognomy, conversational hypnosis, team-building, leadership, management, and psychometric testing. Jody's clients would say that his capacity for creating ROI is what they appreciate the most. He normally gets between a 10X and 25X return on their investment. He has been sought after by clients to speak at their retreats, to assist in changing behaviors in top executives as well as coaching C-Suite leaders for success.   What you'll hear in this episode: Jody has worked with all kinds of people, from ex-convicts to Boy Scouts! How Jody discovered that the same principles that define great leaders also define great Christians Three of Jody's favorite books he has written are: The Quest: How to Discover God's Call for Your Life, The Six Demons of Fear, and My Judo Life: How to Turn the Challenges of Life in Your Favor and Propel Yourself Forward. Jody claims daily inspiration from II Timothy 1:7 and living in God's spirit of calmness and sanity. Which spirit are YOU living in today? A defining moment for Jody came in 2003 during his prayer time, but he was trapped in what was an unfulfilling profession for 12 more years before realizing his calling to write and speak. Of the Seven Cultural Mountains, Jody believes he is called to Art and Business. From Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill: “Every setback holds within it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit.”  Jody tells the story of one particular failure, when he held training in Madrid for pharmaceutical researchers and couldn't even communicate with them using his “Texas-brand Spanish.” Laugh along with us! Jody remembers a defining moment at age 4, when he first knew he wanted to talk in  front of people for a living. After leaving the technology world, Jody finally claimed his calling to write books, speak, and train others. How many people NEVER claim their calling? Let's Get Real Round Questions: What is your biggest strength? “Being able to see wisdom beyond just the realm of the physical world, and to put it on paper.” What is your biggest weakness inside that strength? “Missing the rest of the world when getting into writing. I need to have a balance.” Kung Fu Round Questions: How do you share the gospel in your daily life? “I try to live as an example of the behavior with which Jesus lived. I teach those leadership examples and then people ask me about something deeper. This opens the door for me to share the gospel.” What is a daily habit that contributes to your walk with God? “It's my prayer life. I've learned to be quiet and still and to get in tune with Christ.” What is a recent helpful book that you've read? “I love anything by Max Lucado. Two that come to mind are Cure for the Common Life and Wild at Heart.” What is a resource that you can recommend to our listeners? “I love www.audible.com  and Automobile University. I also recommend my blog, www.jodyholland.com.  What advice would you give to the “younger” you? “I would speak to myself on the first day of 8th grade, when I was SO concerned about what people thought of me. “Be confident in you. Find out as soon as you can WHO you were designed to be, and STOP caring what other people think of you.” What parting advice do you have for our listeners? “Each of us was designed for greatness. We weren't designed to be miserable. Claim the connection to God that you were created to have. The only definition of you that really matters is that you are a child of God. Everything else is secondary.” Resources: www.jodyholland.com Email: jody@jodyholland.com. www.amazon.com (Find Jody's books!) His team won the state academic championship over the weekend, but had to overcome some significant hurdles while doing it. I was really inspired by not only the positivity and resilience of the team of 6th graders, but I was also inspired by the actions of their coach. What was Colby thinking throughout the whole day? Did he lose focus or confidence? Did he give up or think they were going to lose? What did he learn during the process? Let's find out! Read More...
