We're all anxious, and none of us can pay attention. We don't read long books anymore; our kids don't read at all. When we watch TV, we scroll at the same time. And we absolutely cannot be alone with ourselves. These are the symptoms of a modern malaise that is everywhere diagnosed but rarely treated with the dire seriousness it deserves: an epochal sickness that is fundamentally changing the way we relate to each other and to our own minds. What would it take to reclaim control? Chris Hayes — journalist, author, and host of MSNBC's All In — joins to discuss his new book The Sirens' Call: How Attention Became the World's Most Endangered Resource. Together, Chris and the boys theorize how attention replaced information as the defining commodity of modern life. Along the way, we discuss our own struggles with social media addiction, prayer as an ancient technology for organizing attention, the evolutionary origins of attention-seeking, Donald Trump as the "public figure par excellence" of the attention age, and how to fight back against the corporate takeover of our minds. Toward the end, Chris explains how he's navigating hosting his cable show amid another bewildering Trump era, which seems designed to divide and fragment our attention.Further Reading: Chris Hayes, The Sirens' Call: How Attention Became the World's Most Endangered Resource, (2025)Simone Weil, Gravity and Grace, (1952)Adam Phillips, Attention Seeking, (2022)Karl Marx, Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, (1844)Kyle Chayka, FIlterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture, (2024)Shoshana Zuboff, The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power, (2019)Daniel Immerwahr, "What if the Attention Crisis Is All a Distraction?" Understand attention seeking: its causes, impacts, and solutions. For many, attention seeking begins with a constant need for approval and validation from others. Individuals often seek reassurance from peers, family, or authority figures, craving recognition and approval that they feel is missing from within.Such behavior can manifest in various ways. Some people may overtly seek attention through their looks, status, or achievements, while others might engage in more subtle forms, such as people-pleasing or overworking to gain praise. Regardless of how it presents, the core issue is a disconnection from one's true self. With awareness and effort, it is possible to overcome attention seeking behaviour. By understanding its roots and embracing our inherent worth, we can live more authentically and find fulfilment from within. With your hosts, David James Lees (ordained Taoist monk, emotional and spiritual health teacher) and Alexandra Lees (mindset and business coach).Discover our online consultations, events and shop: https://www.wuweiwisdom.comOther related teachings on our YouTube channel that will help you:Why Do I Seek Approval & Validation From Others? https://youtu.be/uACgIJGrLPg?si=0_PQ1RnycY8QeCZ0How to Stop People Pleasing https://youtu.be/SkokB7JzzbI?si=A5tnneBcI9V1H-ciHow to Stop Giving Your Power to Others https://youtu.be/rxZFelCBzsY?si=da4jpqq_GdiiaCvtIs there a question you'd like answered on the show? Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

Many of the new words that have entered into our English vocabulary in recent years are words that have come into existence thanks to the advent and growth of social media and technology. One of those words that has been sparked by a new trend, is sadfishing. Sadfishing is a growing trend among teenagers that offers insights into some of the pressures and mental health issues facing our kids. Sadfishing is a term referring to social media users who exaggerate their emotional state through their online postings with the goal of attracting the attention of others and generating their sympathy. Typically this is done through sad photos and quotes. We need to pay attention to the sadfishing efforts of the kids we know, as going online might be an effort to get somebody to listen, when nobody else is listening to them. In addition, the cry for attention reveals deep relational needs. Parents, build your relationships with your kids, so that they come first to you.

The Lamborghini Huracan is, unfortunately, seeing the end of its run. While the entry-level Lambo has spun off a handful of wild variants in its decade-long run, the team at Lamborghini is sending off the V10-powered sports car with a series of variants that include a rally-inspired, off-roader. The Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato takes the bones of the Huracan, gives it a lift, slaps on some all-terrain rubber, and adds a set of off-road lights to the nose. There's also a roof-mounted air intake, which helps your V10 not gulp sand, dirt, or water as you're blasting through the desert or rally stage. That 5.2-liter V10 sends 602 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque through a seven-speed automatic transmission and into the Lamborghini all-wheel-drive system.  On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of this special Huracan and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to those segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's executive editor Tom Murphy about this Lamborghini, off-road-inspired supercars, and more. Attention-seeking behavior is a common challenge in classrooms, and addressing it effectively is crucial for the overall learning environment. One possible reason for this attention-seeking behavior is that some of our students do not yet have the effective communication to gain attention in a more appropriate way. For these students, we need to explicitly teach them these communication skills. When we provide explicit instruction and reinforcement, we can help students acquire the communication skills necessary to seek attention in a positive manner rather than through negative attention-seeking behaviors. In this episode, I am giving a quick overview of choosing which communication form to use, how to provide practice and repetition to help students develop these communication skills, and the importance of providing the appropriate type of attention.03:41 - Things to consider when choosing the communication form you will teach your student to use when seeking attention06:33 - How to provide practice for a student to gain your attention using a set-up teaching situation09:15 - How to use a brief overview of what to expect and your knowledge of the student to help prevent behavior problems when working on attention-seeking communication12:02 - The importance of giving the student attention in whatever way the FBA states14:23 - Why using “wait cards” can be helpful in helping students understand when you cannot give them attentionShow Notes: http://autismclassroomresources.com/episode210Resources:Get the Waiting for Attention & Getting a Teacher's Attention Social StoryJoin the Autism Classroom Resources' Free Resource Library Get more information about the Special Educator AcademyJoin the Free Facebook Group If you're enjoying this podcast, could you please take a quick moment to leave your review on Apple Podcasts? All attention is not equal. We have likely all worked with students who engage in behavior just to get attention, whether it be positive or negative. Even when students are getting what we feel is a lot of attention, they may still engage in attention-seeking behavior because the attention they receive is on our terms, not theirs. Students often realize that our response to negative behavior is larger and more consistent than our response to positive behavior. This, in turn, reinforces to them that if they want attention, negative behaviors are the way to get it. In this episode, I am breaking down the three advantages negative attention has over positive behavior and ideas of ways you can try to encourage more positive attention-seeking behaviors.05:56 - How consistency gives negative behavior an advantage over positive behavior06:51 - Why the magnitude of our response to behaviors matters07:29 - The impact of learning history on behaviors09:10 - How increasing the magnitude of our response to positive behaviors can help encourage more positive behavior13:26 - The importance of consistency in boosting replacement behaviors Show Notes: http://autismclassroomresources.com/episode209Resources:Watch the Preventing Challenging Behavior WebinarGet the Social Stories - Waiting for Attention & Getting a Teacher's AttentionJoin the Autism Classroom Resources' Free Resource Library Get more information about the Special Educator AcademyJoin the Free Facebook Group If you're enjoying this podcast, could you please take a quick moment to leave your review on Apple Podcasts? As children, our sense of worthiness hinges on the approval, attention, validation, and protection of others. When we do not receive the consistent, maternal warmth every child needs to develop the psychological sense that we are enough, we matter, and that we are good, and acceptable even when we make a mistake or do not always behave as our parents prefer, this mystical connection to the self is fractured.  In this space, our survival brain and even the root chakra, operate from a place of survival. Rather than live from our hearts, embracing ourselves as works in progress, without self loathing and internal self-abuse, we develop hypervigilance codependency traits and are soaked in insecure attachment issues. All these effects are normal, considering being raised to feel alone, invisible, abandoned, and detached from the authentic self.  On the road to personal development, spiritual healing, and living an authentic life, all serious truth seekers find themselves questioning the thoughts, emotions, patterns, and behaviors that inhibit their spiritual growth. If you are here, and you are learning to become more objective about how you show up in the world, that's incredible. It may also be painful. However, to grow we must all confront what we feel, why we feel what we feel, and how the past organically recreates itself in our future, all outside conscious awareness. In this episode, Lisa A. Romano will help you explore how you show up in the world and reveal signs that indicate you might be stuck, living out unhealed childhood patterns by seeking approval and attention outside of yourself. Awareness is necessary for spiritual healing, personal growth, and living a conscious, authentic life, so buckle in Dear Ones.  Lisa has created a private Membership for those who are ready to ascend the patterns of the past and who understand that real healing can only happen at the subconscious level. Listen in as we dissect the intricate web of lies and their implications, both for the individual and those around them. This exploration also extends to the consequences of fake kidnappings, attention-seeking behavior, and their possible link to mental health issues. Prepare for a lively debate about the characteristics that define high-value men and women. We explore the importance of a strong moral code, leadership values, faith, and discipline. This conversation also highlights the dangers of an overemphasis on superficial success and material possessions, and the need to strive for internal success. Additionally, we shed light on the challenges faced by a trans woman who was refused treatment by a gynecologist and the current debate about who owns periods and womanhood.  The latter part of our discussion touches on the struggles with ADHD and bipolar medication, focusing on Carla's personal experience with Adderall. We navigate through the consequences of the 'highs' and 'lows' of medication and the importance of consistency. You will also get insights on financial literacy, budgeting, and the various avenues for accessing education. Don't miss out on this episode, where we talk about real-life experiences and challenges, providing a platform for you to learn and grow.
