Colin Shindler, Paddy Barclay and Jon Holmes discuss the phenomenon of Brits Abroad, those British footballers who made the transition to the sun, sangria and shenanigans of playing for foreign teams.  Jon of course became a one-man Lunn PolyTravel Agency for his clients in the 1980s but the phenomenon of British footballers travelling to foreign climes began early in the postwar years with the Bogata bandits.  With the exception of John Charles and Gerry Hitchens, English exports to European clubs in the 1950s and 1960s were generally not a great success.  But after Kevin Keegan went to SV Hamburg in 1977 it all began to change until the arrival of the Premier League's wealth reversed the direction of the flow of traffic across the Channel. Water scarcity is an increasing problem on every continent, according to the United Nations. Around half the world's population experiences severe water scarcity for at least part of the year, according to a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Global warming and population growth is expected to make the situation worse, so what is it like to run a home or a business amid water shortages? Ruth Alexander hears from households and businesses in Karachi, Pakistan and Bogata, Colombia, and finds out lessons from Cape Town, South Africa which was said to be approaching ‘Day Zero' when the taps would run dry in 2018.

Ilkari, the first truly sovereign technology company, has announced the launch of its industry-first, end-to-end data sovereignty solutions that empower businesses to build data sovereignty on their terms and have full control of their digital assets. Built hyper-sovereign from the ground up, Ilkari was founded to future-proof enterprises' data needs by empowering them with an end-to-end data sovereignty solution that allows them to know and control where their data resides, flows and how it is accessed - even as data volumes increase and the pace of change accelerates. Analysts at Statista predict the volume of data created, captured, copied, and consumed annually worldwide will reach 181 zettabytes in 2025, up from 147 zettabytes in 2024. This represents an increase of 34 zettabytes - the highest one-year increase to date. Ilkari operates on a hyper-private scale and enables its current customers, who regularly appear in the top 300 most visited US websites, to process more than 120M+ daily transactions on average (the scale of global payment processors). Ilkari customers deploy more than 150 critical and diverse technologies in Ilkari's highly flexible, co-location and sovereign cloud platform - from databases to middleware to hardware-based encryption. "Controlling digital infrastructure is crucial for companies who want to achieve true data sovereignty over their technology," said Ilkari CEO Shane Paterson. "Data is eating the world, much like software did in the past 15 years. We enable our customers to build data sovereignty on their terms with end-to-end sovereignty solutions that allow them to quickly, easily and efficiently expand their infrastructure as their enterprise grows. "We are thrilled to introduce a comprehensive set of sovereignty solutions to the market through our new data centre in Colombia, including co-location, sovereign cloud, and domain registration services that empower our customers to scale as needed from day one and with less investment than competing solutions." Ilkari's sovereignty solutions include everything companies need to achieve true data sovereignty: Privately owned data centre: Designed to be sovereign from the ground up, Ilkari's new data centre is located in Bogata's Free Trade Zone in Tocancipá, Colombia. It has a TIA-942 C Rated-3 certification, the first in Colombia and the region. The facility features Huawei's FusionModule2000 solution which optimises performance as the workload increases. Co-location services: Ilkari's privately owned data centre offers regulatory and cost advantages amid the exponential growth of data fueled by AI and blockchain transactions. Sovereign cloud: Ilkari's sovereign cloud solution goes beyond hyperscalers and hybrid cloud concepts. Built with open-source technology, it prevents vendor lock-ins found with public cloud offerings and allows companies to maintain sovereignty over their technology. Top-Level domain registration: Ilkari's global Top-Level domain (TLD) registration overcomes obstacles and eliminates the complexities of obtaining a domain, providing security and peace of mind for businesses with WHOIS protection, domain name risk assessment, expired domain search and domain brokerage. Key features and benefits of Ilkari include: Increased organisational control. The public cloud leads to sovereignty and control issues for companies; Ilkari's sovereign cloud platform is built on open-source technologies and avoids costly vendor lock-ins. Better compliance. co-location and a sovereign cloud under one roof allow companies to adhere to regulatory compliance and regulations. Latest generation data centre: Ilkari's new privately owned and operated data centre has the TIA-942 C Rated-3 data centre. Hyper-private scale. Safeguards and secures data, enabling true data sovereignty even as the pace of change accelerates. True sovereignty. Ilkari's sovereign solutions have no third parties in a customer's data. Bogata in živo pisana situlska pripoved dopolnjuje naše vedenje o življenju socialno močno razslojene prazgodovinske družbe, saj v tem obdobju še niso poznali pisave.

Meet The Blind Birder Reimagining Accessibility In The Outdoors For many blind and low vision people, accessing outdoor spaces like parks can be challenging. Trails are often unsafe or difficult to navigate, signs don't usually have Braille, guides generally aren't trained to help disabled visitors, and so on. But nature recordist Juan Pablo Culasso, based in Bogata, Colombia, is changing that. He's designed a system of fully accessible trails in the cloud forests of southwest Colombia that are specifically tailored to help visually disabled people connect with nature. The trails are the first of their kind in the Americas, and Culasso drew on his own experiences as a blind person and a professional birder to design the system. He talks with Maddie Sofia about how he designed the trail system and takes listeners on an adventure through the cloud forest he works in.   Listen To Ethereal Sounds Derived From Space You've probably heard that if you scream in space, no one will hear a thing. Space is a vacuum, so sound waves don't have anything to bounce off of. But that doesn't necessarily mean that space is silent. A team of researchers are taking data from a variety of telescopes and assigning them sounds, creating song-length sonifications of beloved space structures like black holes, nebulas, galaxies, and beyond. The album, called “Universal Harmonies” aims to bring galaxies to life and allow more people, such as those who are blind and low-vision, to engage with outer space. Guest host Flora Lichtman talks with two of the scientists behind “Universal Harmonies,” Dr. Kimberly Arcand, visualization scientist at NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, and Dr. Matt Russo, astrophysicist and musician at the University of Toronto. Listen to a selection of the ethereal sonifications of “Universal Harmonies.”   Why You Should Thank Your Local Wasp It's late in the summer, meaning any outdoor gathering with food and drink has a good chance of being visited by a pesky, buzzing wasp. But don't reach for that rolled-up newspaper or can of bug spray. The wasps in your world play an important role that's often overlooked. Far beyond the social hornets and yellowjackets people think about when they picture a wasp, the wasp world includes thousands of species. Some are parasitic, injecting their eggs into unwilling prey. Others hunt, either paralyzing prey for their young to feed on, or by bringing bits of meat back to a nest for their young. Some are strictly vegetarian, and live on pollen. Some are needed for the pollination of figs and certain species of orchids. Dr. Seirian Sumner, a behavioral biologist at University College London, says that if people understood the services provided by wasps the same way that they understand the need for bees, they might be more willing to overlook an occasional wasp annoyance—and might even be thankful for the wasps in their lives. In her book, "Endless Forms: The Secret World of Wasps," Sumner makes the case for wasps as nature's pest control agents, as important pollinators that should be celebrated. And the pesky yellowjacket at your picnic? It's probably being driven by a late-summer shift in functions within the nest, in which many of the workers die off and are replaced by sexual brood. Earlier in the year, worker wasps can bring bits of meat to the developing young, which reward them with sugary secretions. But later in the season, that food source dries up—so visiting wasps are probably searching for a bit of sugar just to get by. “Watch the wasp, see what she wants at your picnic,” Sumner advises. “Is she going for sugar, or is she going for some meat? Whatever you can work out that she wants, give her a little bit of it. Make a little wasp offering.” Sumner joins SciFri producer Charles Bergquist to talk about wasps, and make a case for why you should be thankful for the wasps in your neighborhood.   To stay updated on all-things-science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters. Hej! W tym odcinku przedstawiam historię bogactwa Arabii Saudyjskiej. W jaki sposób ten bliskowschodni kraj został naftowym potentatem? Aby to opisać musiałem nawiązać do okresu przed II Wojną Światową kiedy zostały odkryte pierwsze złoża surowcowego złota. Nie byłoby to możliwe bez wsparcia Amerykanów. To dolary zbudowały naftowe imperium. Jeżeli chcecie dowiedzieć się więcej zapraszam Was do słuchania najnowszego odcinka serii Powojnie.

How Many Glasses Of Water A Day Do You Actually Need? If you follow health or fitness influencers, at some point you've probably heard something about people needing six to eight ounces glasses of water a day to be healthy. The question of the right amount of water needed for health and happiness is still an open one, and varies from person to person. But a recent study in the journal Science looked at just how much water people actually do consume each day. The study didn't just ask people how many sips they had taken. Instead, it tracked the amount of water that flowed through the bodies of over 5,000 people around the world, using labeled isotopes to get data on “water turnover”—how much water was consumed and excreted. The researchers found a large range of water use, driven in part by differences in body size and socioeconomic status. A small, not very active woman might drink less than two liters per day, while a large, very active woman might gulp almost eight liters a day, a four-fold difference. Dr. Dale Schoeller, a professor emeritus in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and the Biotechnology Institute at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, joins SciFri producer Kathleen Davis to talk about the study, the importance of water consumption, and how people can do better at estimating the amount of water they need.   Road Salt Is Washing Into The Mississippi River…And It's Not Washing Out This winter has already brought significant snowfall to much of the U.S. Historically, more snow has meant more road salt. It's an effective way to clear roads — but also brings cascading environmental impacts as it washes into rivers and streams. But amid one powerful winter storm that walloped the Midwest in December, employees from the La Crosse County Facilities Department did something a little different. As usual, they clocked into work well before dawn to plow the county's downtown parking lots. They were followed by facilities director Ryan Westphal, who walked each of the lots, checking for slick spots. Finding none, he didn't lay any salt down on top. That's a major departure from how he would have handled the situation a few years ago – before their department made the decision to dramatically cut back on salt use to prevent it from flowing into waters like the nearby Mississippi River, which new data show has been growing saltier for decades. Under the previous protocol, in Westphal's words, his crew would have “salted the crap” out of the lots after a snowfall like this, without giving deference to whether they actually needed it. Today, there's a careful calculation after each time it snows to ensure they're using just the right amount of salt. Producer's Choice series. #4 of 4. Justiniano Durán had carefully painted Colombian President Nieto Gil's official presidential portrait from life some time around 1861. After Nieto's death in 1866, his portrait was sent to Paris for an alteration, intended to make it look more “distinguished.” This is where his face acquired the strange whitish-blue tint observed by historian Fals Borda over 100 years later. Once the portrait was returned to Colombia, there was very little interest in it. Eventually, it ended up being abandoned in the Inquisition Palace. Just as his dark-faced portrait was lightened, the reality of Nieto's African ancestry was obscured and lost to history. Fals Borda was intent on rectifying this wrong. He had the portrait restored, that is re-darkened, that year. It wasn't until 2018, however, that the restored portrait and Nieto's black ancestry, was recognized and celebrated by the Colombian state. In August of that year, former president Juan Manuel Santos presided over the installation of a replica of Nieto's original portrait to the presidential palace in Bogata. Perhaps the 19th-century Colombian authorities' effort to erase the African roots of its fourteenth president is unsurprising to those who know Latin American history. But the story of race and nationalism in Latin America is much more complicated than meets the eye. Join us as we dig in. Kako to?

The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1779 Birth of William Baldwin, American physician, and botanist.  William is remembered as one of the first botanists to explore Georgia and Florida and parts of Latin America and the West Indies. William was brought on as the botanist for Stephen Long's 1819 expedition to find the headwaters of the Missouri River. Six months later, William Baldwin died at Franklin, Missouri, at the age of 40 and was buried on the banks of the Missouri River. Today we know about William mostly from his dear friend, the botanist William Darlington, who wrote his biography. The two men became close after William nursed Darlington back to health after an illness when the two were young men. Darlington reflected on William's death decades later when he wrote these words: His gentle spirit forsook its frail tenement, in a region far remote from his anxious family, - and the wildflowers of the West, for more than twenty years, have been blooming on his lonely grave: But the recollection of his virtues continues to be fondly cherished by every surviving friend, - and his ardor in the pursuit of his favorite Science will render his memory forever dear to the true lovers of American Botany. William Darlington learned from a colleague that floodwaters had washed away William Baldwin's grave the following year. Baldwin's milkwort (Polygala balduinii "puh-LIG-ah-lah bal-DEE-nee-eye") was named in honor of William Baldwin. Baldwin's milkwort is one of only a handful of white milkworts found in Florida.   1913 Birth of Ronald Stuart Thomas (published as R. S. Thomas), Welsh poet and Anglican priest. Here's an excerpt of his poem The Garden (1963). It is a gesture against the wild, The ungovernable sea of grass; A place to remember love in, To be lonely for a while;   1969 On this day, work was finished on a kimono-inspired garden in Japan called Yûrin no Niwa ("Yer-EEN no nee-wah") in Kyoto. The garden was initially designed to accompany the building for the Association of Kimono Manufacturers. The famous garden designer Mirei Shigemori ("Me-ray Shig-ah-mor-ee") designed the garden, which was celebrated in a ceremony the day after work was completed. But thirty years later, the area was redeveloped, and the building was set to be demolished. Iwamoto Toshio ("E-wah-mo-to To-see-oh") was a student of Shigemori's, and he decided to rescue the garden so that it could be relocated to a new home. When Shigemori's hometown built a new town hall, the garden found its new home. And so, over 80 truckloads of rock and stone were painstakingly brought to the new site, where they were reassembled to make the second incarnation of the Yûrin no Niwa garden. This second garden ended up being just a bit larger.  The garden features a shallow kimono-shaped pond, and the water brings out the colors of the red and blue stones that make the strips of the noshi bundle on the kimono. The garden's name was a blending of the two names - the name of the man who developed the silk-dying process for the kimonos and the name of the painter who inspired the kimono designs: Yûrin no Niwa.   2021 On this day, as Brits were enjoying the end of their COVID lockdown, Out and Out shared an article called, five things to do to get your garden ready for March 29th. The tips included: 1. Smarten up your lawn  There is something so appealing about a lush, vibrant green lawn, so make this your first job. Give your lawn a good raking to get rid of any fallen debris and shake over some grass seed if you notice any patchy areas. 2. Wash away winter ...get everything scrubbed up nicely – you don't want to take the shine off your gathering with grubby surroundings. Give your patio and decking areas a good going over with a jet wash and blast away winter's deposits. 3. Organize your seating Place garden dining furniture in a large enough area that there's space to walk all the way around and for guests to comfortably get in and out. If you have a garden lounge set or garden sofas, lay them out so you can comfortably converse with guests while enjoying the satisfying garden views. 4. Spring planting If you didn't get round to planting spring bulbs last year, you can always add instant colour by picking up some established plants at the garden centre. Shrubs such as Camellia, Japanese quince and Forsythia also look their best during the spring months. Pop some into borders and create container displays for the patio to give your garden an instant lift. 5.  Finishing touches For alfresco dining, set the table with colorful crockery and beakers which will take you through to BBQ season too. For sunny weather, invest in a parasol, and for cooler days and evenings patio heaters and some chunky throws will be very welcome additions.  Don't forget solar lights either, to keep the conversation going after nightfall.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Homegrown Tea by Cassie Liversidge   This book came out in 2014, and the subtitle is An Illustrated Guide to Planting, Harvesting, and Blending Teas and Tisanes. I have been waiting to share this book with you.  Now, if you don't know what a Tisane is, it's an infusion: take dried or fresh herbs and infuse them into liquids, and then you have a beverage that you can drink just to enjoy or get some medicinal benefit from it. A sample Tisane might be made with Juniper berries or white peppercorns with grapefruit and orange peels. That's a great little drink. Juniper is outstanding and is a common ingredient in a Tisane. Now, one of the things that I want to say about Cassie's book right off the bat is that it's stunning. This is a St. Martin's Griffin book. There are so many beautiful photos. I love illustrated guides because they are so helpful. Sometimes, when you're exploring a new topic or venturing into a new area of gardening, you need lots of photos to find your way and serve as inspiration for you. Now Cassie is a huge tea fan, and she sees the garden through the lens of tea. When Cassie sees a garden, she sees a living tea cupboard because there are all kinds of plant materials that you can harvest to make your own teas and tisanes. As Cassie says in her introduction, Homegrown Tea is a gardening book for tea lovers. It explains how to grow a large variety of plants from which you can make your own teas and tisanes. your garden, your balcony, or even your window sill could become your tea cupboard. Now, one of the other things that I love about how Cassie approaches this is, she also shares some of the history of tea and how some of these ingredients have been used over the years. Her sample drinks include plants like rose hips, mint, sage hibiscus, and lavender and plants like chicory or angelica, apple geranium, and lemon verbena. One other thing that I want to tell you about Cassie is that she's a garden girl. She grew up in her parents' plant nursery, so she knows about plants - they're in her DNA. And that's why Cassie is so thoughtful and so knowledgeable about plants in the garden and how you can incorporate them into teas. And by the way, her debut book was called Grow Your Own Pasta Sauce, and that book is excellent as well. But if you are a tea lover, you've got to get this book. And if you have a friend that loves tea, this would make an excellent gift or even just a wonderful hostess gift. It would be great to give this book to a summer party hostess and a few teabags of your own concoctions.  This book is 288 pages of tea in all its glory and fresh from your garden. You can get a copy of Homegrown Tea by Cassie Liversidge and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $16.   Botanic Spark 1942 On this day, a twenty-six-year-old ethnobotanist named Richard Evans Schultes arrived at the Kofán village of El Conejo, where a shaman welcomed him.  Richard had just finished his Ph.D. at Harvard, and his mission was to find indigenous arrow poisons used in the Amazon rainforest. The goal was to see if the poisons could be used as muscle relaxants in surgical procedures. The trip set Richard down a path of meeting with shamans and discovering the plants they used medicinally and in their holy traditions. Richard gleaned so much on this trip. He learned about special leaves that were heated with smoke and then laid on the forehead to relieve headaches; orchid bulbs that were chewed for energy on long trips; shamrock leaves that were gargled for throat pain; pepper plant poultices applied to insect bites; the leaves of a white orchid that could be packed around a sore tooth or eaten mashed with sugar to heal a broken heart. The list goes on and on. Overall, Richard's trip was a success. It seemed charmed from the start. On his first day in Bogata, Richard discovered a new orchid. He pressed it in between the pages of his passport. It was later named Pacyphyllum schultesii in his honor. Richard later reflected on the opportunity and wrote, I had just earned my Ph.D. at Harvard, and I had been offered two jobs.  One was as a biology master at a private school in New England; the other was a ten-month grant... to go to the Amazon region to identify the plants employed in the many kinds of curare the Indians use for hunting.  I decided on the Amazon—which is fortunate because otherwise, I would probably still be a biology [teacher]!   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

#081 - This week on The Meg Rock Show, I was able to sit down with Maria Legarda. Maria is an actress, a content creator, and an entrepreneur. She has her own foundation in Bogata, Columbia. She's been on many TV shows, has starred in movies, and has millions of followers across all platforms, TikTok, Instagram, you name it... In this podcast, we talk about how on February 7th, 2019, her world was turned upside down. She was filming content when she suddenly got a call from her mom that her brother, who was on the brink of his own success as a singer, entertainer, had been hit in the head by a stray bullet. Maria said, "I am devoted because of the loss of my brother. After all that I've been through, I am devoted to living my life most authentically, encouraging others to be the same, and to really help them understand that no matter what they go through in their life they can still be the light." Maria is very spiritual, and we talk about how her brother still communicates with her in spirit and how their bond, even though he's not on the earthly plane, is still so huge.
