S6E16 went out live on Rebel Rock radio at 7 pm on 20 April 2023.  It was jam-packed with new stuff including Metallica, Overkill, Dave Hause, and Ian Hunter.  The highlight of the new releases was a track called ‘#Rebel' from Extreme, Nuno Bettencourt is on fire on the tracks released so far. The album is to be called Six and there are 3 tracks out so far.  We also had a surprise release from the Foo Fighters.  The band is calling it a new beginning.  According to Rolling Stone; The album arrives “after a year of staggering losses, personal introspection, and bittersweet remembrances,” the album's listing page notes. “A brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything Foo Fighters have endured recently, But Here We Are is a testament to the healing powers of music, friendship, and family.”  Following on from the tragic death of Taylor Hawkins the Foos have regrouped and united through music.  No one is saying who drummed on the track, but it does sound like Dave to me. I still hope Rufus Taylor will get the gig. The Ultimate Challenge was way more difficult than normal because 1976 was so strong.  We had 6 albums, Thin Lizzy – Jailbreak, Kiss - Destroyer, Judas Priest – Sad Wings of Destiny, Rainbow – Rising, Rush - 2112, and Boston – Boston.  What do you do when you are supposed to pick one out of four and you can't even pick four from six?  I played all 6 and broke my own rules.  The popular choice was Jailbreak, personally Sad Wings and Destroyer are very special to me.  The general view from the listeners was that 1976 was phenomenal and these 6 albums just prove it.    We had some TSORR oddities and called back the past with Madness and Adam and the Ants, both went down well.  The Immortals this week featured Creedance Clearwater Revival and their 7:39 Track ‘Keep on Chooglin'.  This track gets into your head, the Doctor says it normally takes a week to stop singing 'Keep On Chooglin' to yourself.    This was one of the most enjoyable shows in a long time, with good vibes on the airwaves and cool people to share it with, Ed's dead baby, Ed's dead, Long live Nuno.   Don't forget to catch TSORR on Feedspot where it is ranked No 11 in the 35 Best Rock and Roll Podcastshttps://blog.feedspot.com/rock_and_roll_podcasts/?feedid=5328472Artists featured:  Sammy Hagar, Monster Truck, Gary Moore, The Lazy's, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Black Crowes, Bad Company, Ian Hunter, Dave Hause, U.D.O., Krokus, iron maiden, Paradox, Massive Wagons, Oasis, Madness, Adam and the Ants, My Chemical Romance, Metallica, Overkill, Hinder, live, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Rush, Kiss, Boston, Thin Lizzy, Extreme, Foo Fighters, Arch Enemy, John Mellencamp, The Uninvited, Piet Botha & Jack Hammer.    The Story of Rock and Roll. If you'd like to check out more resources, learn about Mosaic Boston and our neighborhood churches, or donate to this ministry, please visit mosaicboston.comHoly Father, you are worthy of all worship. You've created everything. You've given us life. You've created a way for us to be given new life through your son, Jesus Christ. Jesus, we thank you for fulfilling all of the commandments on our behalf and presenting yourself as a sacrifice on the cross. We thank you that you bore the wrath of God, that we deserve for our law breaking, our rebellion, our selfishness, our sin. And Lord, we thank you that you didn't stay dead. The third day you were resurrected. You laid down your life only to take it up. And you promised us that when we repent of sin and trust in you, all of our sins of forgiven, past, present, and future. And you give us the gift of the Holy Spirit.Holy Spirit, I pray, bless our time, the holy scriptures today, show us what your plan for the church is. What the church at the very beginning did. And Jesus, remind us how much you love your church. Lord, you did everything for your church. The church is your bride and you love your bride. You love your bride so much that you gave yourself for her. And I pray now, Lord, I pray by the washing of water with the words, cleanse each one of us, sanctify us, refocus us on what's most important, especially in the life of the church, which is worshiping the great triune glorious God.Gathering as Christians to have true community and fellowship around the truth of the gospel, and to serve you, and as we do those things, we are not to forget that we do all those things as we're fulfilling the great commission. So you gave us a job to go and make disciples of all nations. Lord, if there's anyone here who's not yet a Christian today, I pray, cut them to the heart with the gospel. Draw them to yourself. Give them the gift of repentance and the gift of mercy. Bless our time in the scriptures. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.We paused our Roman sermon series for two weeks, last week and today, to revisit the DNA of the church. What are the values? And then how do those values work themselves out in the life of the church? We talked about love Jesus simple. By love, what do we mean? We mean a great commitment to the great commandment, and the great commission, and the great compassion. That's what makes for a great church. We talked about that last week. The great commandment is love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind. Love your neighbor as yourself. And if you're really doing that, if you really love God, if you really love neighbor, and you find out that your neighbor is a Christian, you want to spend time with them, have fellowship. If you find out that your neighbor's not a Christian, then you want to evangelize, You want to share the gospel. And that's what brings us to the great commission for you to fulfill the great commandment. We want to fulfill the great commission, which is go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. So we talked about all that last week. That Jesus is at the center of all of that. And today we're going to talk about the rhythms of this church. What do we focus on? Which is worship, community, and service. Which then leaves margin in life to do the great commission. When you start a church... So we started Mosaic coming up on 11 years ago. When you start a church, you want to learn as much as you can from the early church.Well why? Because they were the very first witnesses of Jesus Christ, of the power of the Spirit, working through the apostles in the very beginning. Second, the Holy Spirit laid a foundation for what the church is and what the church should be doing. What should the church be focused on? How should the church be using its resources? And third, it refocuses us on what we need to be focused on. Cause clearly the early church was highly effective. Sociologists tell us that by the time Constantine comes to power, in the fourth century, he looks around to consolidate power. He realizes he has to become a Christian, or at least say he's a Christian. Why? Because over 50% of the population were believers. How do they do that in a few hundred years? Well they did that by focusing on what God told them to focus on, which is worship, community and service. We see that the early church devoted themselves to these three things, and that was the extent of their church life. What did they do with the rest of their time? Well they loved people, they served people, and they shared the gospel. They proclaimed the gospel with everyone that they had an opportunity to. That's the margin that they had. And this is really important in a place like Boston, because this place is busy. You get busy. And the longer you're here, and if you have a family, you're just busy, busy, busy, busy. And that's why we don't want to fill up your time with a lot of church activities. Worship service, get that on your calendar, community group, get on your calendars, join a service team, and the rest of your allotted time, the rest of your time that you have, that's the margin. We devote that to spending time with those who are far from the Lord, in order to share the gospel. So let's look today at Acts 2:37-47. This is the account of the early church. "Now when they heard this they were all cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise Is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself." And with many other words, he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, "Save yourselves from this crooked generation." So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about 3000 souls. And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who are being saved."This is the reading of God's Holy inerrant, infallible, authoritative word. May He write these eternal truths upon our hearts. To a little context before we get into our points, the context first of all is that the book of Acts is the primary source historical account of the early church and it's also sacred scripture. So this is all historically accurate. And this word has been inspired by the Holy Spirit to teach us about how the early church structured their life.So the context of the text in particular, is that Peter, who was a disciple of Jesus Christ, he was a fisherman by training, had a small fishing business, never preached, but he spent three years with Jesus Christ. And Jesus, after he ascends to Heaven, he says... Before he ascends to heaven, he says, "Don't do anything." After his resurrection, before his ascension, he says, "Don't do anything until the Holy Spirit comes." So the church is waiting, church is waiting, church waiting. Holy Spirit, comes descends upon Peter, Peter gets up and preaches his very first sermon. And at his very first sermon, 3000 souls got saved. How many people over there? I don't know, thousands. He preaches a sermon. Now there's at least 3,120 Christians, at least, maybe 3,500 because 500 people witness the resurrection of Christ. And says that they were cut to the heart with the message that he preached.Well what did he preach? He preached the gospel. And what he told these people who grew up in the Jewish community, they grew up with the Hebrew scriptures, that they grew up going to the temple. What he told them was the Messiah has come, His name was Jesus Christ, to fulfill all of the scriptures he has come, he's done a perfect work, and you killed him, you Israel, you killed him. That was his message. And they said, "What do we do? What do we do?" And Peter just says, "Repent of your sins and trust in Jesus Christ." He gives him the gospel. They get saved. We got a brand new church. Now the question is, how are we, church, going to disciple 3000 baby Christians. There's 3000, imagine if 3000 people showed up to Mosaic today. 3000 people are like, "We got saved, we're saved. What do we do?" And we're going to say, "Thankfully there's 1400 seats here." So we can do two services. We would fit everybody. What else would we as a church do different? We would do nothing different. We would do exactly what they did in the beginning. They focused on worship, community, and service. So that, those are our points. Devote yourself to worship, devote yourself to community, and devote yourself to service. And this is all within the context of the life of the church.First of all, devote yourself to worship, Verse 46 of Chapter 2. "And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God." Glad and generous hearts. They finally realized what Jesus Christ had done for them. They finally realized the great plan of salvation.Verse 23, at the beginning of Peter's sermon, "this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men." You're saying this, Jesus Christ, you killed him. This is all God's plan. The gospel's God's plan A from the very beginning. It's according to the definite plan, according to the foreknowledge. And it's all according to God's plan for you to hear the gospel and to receive grace. And they're cut to the heart with this message. Their hearts are changed. Now they devote themselves to God. They don't do it to receive love. So a lot of people don't understand Christianity because they look at Christianity with a very religious mindset. A religious mindset is a works based salvation mindset that you can do something to earn favor with, God or you can earn acceptance with God, or you can earn a relationship. You can't earn anything with God. No, we're accepted by God because of Jesus Christ. So we devote ourselves to God because we have already received love, because we've received forgiveness and acceptance. So they've been transformed, they received the grace. Now what do they do? Verse 42, "they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching." What does it mean to devote yourself to something? It means to hold fast and endured, to stand perpetually ready to persevere in. And you do have to devote yourselves to things that do not come naturally. Naturally speaking, in the flesh, we're a little lazy. You got to devote yourself to things that are good for you, but kind of hard. No one accidentally works out five days a week. No one does that accidentally. You devote yourself to that. No one accidentally eats healthfully. You got to devote. Broccoli, nobody accidentally eats broccoli. No, you got to devote yourself to health. So there are things that are good for us that are hard to do because of the flesh. He says they devoted themselves to this because they realized that this is important. They prioritize this because they realize there's nothing more important than this. So they're cut to the heart and they devote themselves to the apostles' teaching. Openness to being fed by the Word of God is a key evidence that one is truly regenerated. The Word of God is at the center of their worshiping of God. Why? Because you don't... How can you worship a God that you don't know? We need the Word that reveals who God is, reveals the person of God, reveals the character of God, reveals the purposes and the plans of God. And we as believers, we are to long for the word, 1 Peter 2:2, "like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk that by it you may grow up into salvation." We're to long for this. You don't have to teach an infant to long for milk or to long for food. And this is a sign that person is regenerated where they do want to spend time with believers. You do want to jump into the Word. You want more of scripture. They were cut to the heart and you can only be cut by something that's harder than you. They received a really hard truth, a transcendent truth, a truth that broke their heart. They realized, "Oh my, we've been living a lie this whole time." Jesus told them to continue in the scriptures, to grow in the scriptures because the scriptures not only reveal who God is, but they also have a sanctifying power over our souls. They don't just nourish us, they also cleanse us. So in Ephesians 5, where Jesus Christ is talking to husbands, "Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her."And then the scripture says, and then Jesus, what is the, having cleansed the church by the water with the Word. There's a cleansing process that happens when we read the Word. When we sit under the Word, when we let the Word of God speak to us. And there is a cutting. There should be a cutting. The Word of God is a sword. It's a living and active sword. It cuts, it cuts sharper than, it's sharper than any two edge sword. It cuts down between separation of soul and spirit. We need the Word of God. This is exactly what they devoted themselves to, and it transformed them. Acts 2:42, "they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayers." So there's the apostles' teaching, there's the prayers. And then Colossians tells us that when we are to gather, we are to sing as well with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. And we do all of this to cultivate a sense of God's presence, an awareness of God's presence. That's the greatest thing we can give you. This is what we try to instill in you on Sunday mornings, just a longing and a hunger for the presence of God. Because when you get a presence of God, you realize that's exactly what you needed. That's all you need. In the sermon, The Christian Pilgrim by Jonathan Edwards, one of the most powerful sermons ever written. He says, "God is the highest good of the reasonable creature; and the enjoyment of him is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of earthly friends are but shadows; but the enjoyment of God is the substance. These are but scattered beams; but God is the sun. These are but streams; but God is the fountain. These are but drops; but God is the ocean." This is what our souls long for.As a deer pants for water so my soul, God my soul longs for you. This is why they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, the prayers, the public worship gathering, because they realized there's not many of us. We live in a spiritually arid climate. A spiritual desert, so to speak. At that time there were only a few thousand Christians in all of the world. And they realize we need to stay together and be rooted in God's word.If you're new to Boston, welcome. We're so glad you're here. I hope you're enjoying yourself. The fall is really amazing. But one word about the spiritual climate here. If you come from a place where there's more Christians, and just a history of more churches, and more of the Kingdom of God, if you come from a place like down south, like Texas, Arkansas, Georgia, I don't want to pick on any states. I love them all. I'd live in any one of those states if I could. But God sent me here to be a missionary. So I live here on purpose. One of the things you realize here is it's a desert. It's a desert. And if you do not commit to ground yourself in the Word of God, in Christian community, in worship of God growing in worship of God, six weeks will go by and you will not realize how you became a pagan. You just won't. You'll have no, like, "What? I live just like everybody else. I think about the same things. I'm driven by the same thing." Why? Because you got pulled out of a cultivated garden of Christian community and the Word of God and saturated. And you're brought up here where people hate you for being a Christian. People up here hate Christianity in general. They hate the fact that it even exists. So what do you do in a place like this? Well, you grow stronger. That's what you do, by shooting your roots deeper into the Word of God. Psalm 1:1-6, "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He's like a tree planted by the streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. And all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sins in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish."The only way the tree thrives in a desert, in arid culture is if there's a constant supply of water. And meditating on God's Word, that's what satiates the heart with living water of God. And the opposite in, Verse 4, the chaff, it has no substance. There's no roots. They built their lives on sand. God is the life source, and meditating on God and his Word, this is what feeds us. And as we do that, it reminds us what we're created for. God, the glorious God of the universe, created us. God, what was the purpose? He created us to glorify him, to worship him. He designed us to worship him. And when we worship him we realize, "Oh, this is what I was created for. This satisfies the heart." And if you do not worship God, if you don't grow in worshiping God, you will worship something. You can't not worship. What does the word worship mean? You find something worthy of who you are, worthy of your soul, worthy of your attention, worthy of your resources. And this is what Satan, he wants to pull you away from worshiping God to worshiping creation. If you don't worship the creator, you will worship creation. Either you'll worship people, maybe yourself or other people. You'll worship bodies. You'll worship money, sex. You worship career. You can't not worship. This was the greatest temptation in the beginning, when Jesus fasted 40 days and then Satan comes to hims, to tempt him. What did Satan tempt him with? Matthew 4:10, "And Jesus said to him, "Be gone Satan, for it's written, you shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve."" The gall on Satan coming to God, Jesus Christ, and saying, "Worship me. You exist for me." That was the temptation. And Jesus says, be gone from me, Satan. Well this is what Satan wants for us. He doesn't want you worshiping God. He wants you worshiping anything other than God. He wants you worshiping him. He wants you worshiping yourself. He wants you worshiping A. And Jesus says, "No, this is temptation." So they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching. And Verse 43 says, "And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles." Awe came upon every soul. I like the emphasis on soul here. 3000 souls were added to the church. The emphasis on the immaterial part of you, the eternal part of you. There's a part of you that will exist forever. That's your soul. These souls were saved. These souls were saved from the domain of darkness, transferred in to domain of light. And awe came upon every soul. There's a reverence, there's a fear. Why? Because they realized that they are worshiping a Holy God.And I love the connection between their happiness, glad and generous hearts, and awe they feel in the presence of a Holy God. Because the path to true happiness. And I'm not talking about happiness like when you have a donut and then you're happy. I'm talking about true, it's like a fusion of happiness, and peace, and joy, satisfaction. What that is, that gladness, that's you're connected with God. You're in the presence of God. You're abiding in Jesus Christ. Their souls are connected to God. And this is what holiness is. And this is why we want holiness for you. Holiness is the pathway to the presence of God. The holier you are, the more of the presence of God you experience. The more of the presence of God that you experience, the more gladness, satisfaction, whatever you want to call it.And there is a mixture of awe, where it's like I fear this Holy God. I fear him. What does it mean that God the Father, would put his son to death, bore his wrath into the soul of his son on the cross. Why would he do that? Oh, because he's holy. And the only way to reconcile us to a Holy God is this is the way. And he was willing to do it because that's how loving he is. He's holy. He's loving. There has to be awe in the soul for that. And this is why we want holiness for you. This is why we don't want you to sin. Sin dehumanizes. Sin violates your nature. Sin lessens who God has created you to be. And it leads to depression. Living a life of habitual sin leads you away from God. And when you're away from God, that's when you lose access to the source of satisfaction. So worship God, for in terms of rhythms, we challenge you to attend every single worship service. Every Sunday attend a worship service here at Mosaic and make that a commitment. Devote yourself to it. Next time you see a three day weekend and you're like, "I could go travel but I devoted myself to the apostles' teachings." And then we'll see you here. There is a devotion. I am committed to, I'm devoting to worship.Second, devote yourself to community. You see this in Acts 2:42, "they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship". Again, it's not something that happens naturally. You got to make a commitment. It does take discipline. In Verse 46, "day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts." They had to work at this, it took energy to make this a rhythm of their lives. And through the gospel, God has made us into a community of faith as well. We're brothers and sisters in the Lord. We're spiritual family and God is Father. So we are to know each other and be in community. How do we practice community at Mosaic? We do it through community groups. We have over 20 community groups all around the city, and beyond the city. And we meet in homes. The discussion is all sermon based. So if this is your very first Sunday and you show up to community group this week, you'll know exactly what everyone's talking about. I'm giving you all the cheat codes right here. And then you show up and you're like, "Yeah, I am very well versed in the worship, community, and service. Let's talk." And then you get to know people, you get to know their needs. You pray for one another. You're known and you know others. And then we take community even deeper at Mosaic with membership. We take membership seriously because scripture teaches us to know who's part of the church and who's not part of the church. In Hebrews, it says that the elders of the church will give an account to God for the souls that God has entrusted to them. So if I'm going to give an account to God for someone's soul, I need to know are they a member of the church or not? And membership, it's a mutual commitment. When the church commits to take responsibility for the person, a person commits to take responsibility for the church. And membership isn't a status symbol or social club. It's a covenant where we covenant together to further the mission, the vision, and the life of the church as we hold each other accountable. And the first step to becoming a member is taking a membership class.True fellowship, it takes work. Acts 2:44-45 says, "All who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need." So fellowship impacted their finances, their bank account, so to speak. I always got to pause here because this is not communism. A lot of communist point to this text, like "Jesus said we should be communist." No he did not. He did not say that. No one's forced to sell anything here. They are motivated by the grace in the heart, generosity of the heart, when they see brothers and sisters, their spiritual family just increased. They thought they had the just immediate family to take care of. And then they realized, oh my, there's thousands of brothers and sisters. So all of a sudden there's liquidity issues. So they're selling stuff because they realized that people had needs. And this is one of the beauties of being in community. You meet people who have needs. And you're like, "Oh, I thought I was having a hard time. Well this person is really struggling so I'm going to take the focus off self," help this person, and the blessings are mutual. If you look at historians who study the early church and what they focused on, this is what they focused on. They focused on caring for one another. If you look at St. Aristides, who delivers the apology around the year 125, when Hadrian visited Athens, he writes the following."But the Christians, O King, while they went about and made search, have found the truth... And when they see a stranger, they take him in their homes and rejoice over him as a very brother; for they did not call him brethren after the flesh, but brethren after the spirit and in God. And whenever one of their poor passes from the world, each one of them according to his ability gives heed to him and carefully sees to his burial. And if they hear that one of their numbers is imprisoned or afflicted on an account of the name of their Messiah, all of them anxiously minister to his necessity, and if it's possible to redeem him, they set him free. And if there is among them any that is poor and needy, and if they have no spare food, they fast two or three days in order to supply the needy their lack of food."Incredible, incredible. A hundred years from when the church started and already you get these accounts of transformation. 3000 people, 3000 people gathered. And how do you disciple them? How do you teach them? Well, you teach them from the holy scriptures. 1 John 3:4, "We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death." This is an expectation that when you become a Christian, that you want to spend time with believers, intentional time with believers. To gather together and to not forget. In the Hebrews 10:24-25, "let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."Not neglecting to meet together. Quick reminder, if you are a member of the church, one of the things that you covenanted to, committed to is regular attendance of community groups. That's just a casual reminder. And if you have not been attending, this is a wonderful time to restart your commitment. We have at the welcome table, a iPad, you can get all the groups, you can sign up. I already, I started getting emails already of people signing up. So praise God. We'd love to join you, have you join us for that.Verse 42, Chapter 2 in Acts, "they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and prayers." And then verse 46, again, you see, "breaking of bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts," It's unclear if this term refers to just eating together or if it's a celebration of the Lord's supper, but Christians should do both together. So today is communion Sunday we take communion together as a church every first Sunday of the month. And then in community groups, sometimes we should eat. I don't know, not every group has food all the time, but there is something powerful in connecting about eating together. It's part of Christian hospitality. It's part of how Jesus did his ministry. One commentator, talking about Jesus is in the gospel of Luke, he says Jesus is either going to, coming from, or at a meal. Jesus would eat with people. He would eat with sinners. He would eat with righteous people. He would just eat with people because it is a way of connecting, and is a way of showing hospitality. And we shouldn't forget, as Christians, to show hospitality to one another and show hospitality to others. 1 Peter 4:9, "show hospitality to one another without grumbling." Peter, I wonder why you said that, the grumbling part. Why? Because hospitality's hard. You got to prepare your home. You got to clean up after. You got to entertain while people are here, et cetera, et cetera. And then if, many of us don't live as nicely as we'd hope to live and we'd wish our spaces were a little bigger. But whenever we get into this question of square footage, and Boston apartments, et cetera, I always want to point out the fact that, hey, if we went to these homes in Jerusalem, in the first century, they were one room. The house was one room. There was no running water, no electricity, no nothing. So if you have a bathroom, if you have lights, it doesn't even matter if your place is like 200 square feet, practice hospitality without grumbling. So if you're not in a community group, devote yourself to community. And then finally devote yourself to service. To put up these worship service takes a lot of work. This church is run by volunteers. So we encourage you, along with devoting yourself to worship services and community groups, to join a service team. Why? Because this is the pattern of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jesus said I came not to be served but to serve and to give my life as a ransom for many. And then he says, "Look, I call you to serve." He says, "I don't call you servants, I call you friends, but my friends do what I say." Because if you want to be a friend of God, you got to do what God says. That's how the relationship works. And what does it mean to love God? It means to serve him.John 15:12-13, "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone laid down his life for his friends." So we do call you to serve partially because if you're a Christian, you're part of the body of Christ and every part of the body has to play its role. We're looking for volunteers for basically all the aspects of church operations, Mini Mosaic, greeting, hospitality, welcome table. All of the jobs are, I sent a newsletter and then also you can find out more at the welcome table. And as they focused on serving, as they focused on worshiping and community, something happened. They began to grow. And Verse 47 says, "They were praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved." They didn't focus on having people get saved. They focused on worshiping God, enjoying community and fellowship with one another, serving one another. And as they did these things, the Lord adds people onto them. Why? How did this happen? Did they do evangelism? Yeah, of course they did evangelism. They had the great commission and you see them going out during the rest of the week. They're going out, and they're preaching the gospel, sharing the gospel. That's how people got see, but that's not what they focused on. And our evangelism, as a church, it gets more powerful when we focus on what God tells us to focus on. Jesus is the one that saves people. God is the one that draws people to salvation. Acts 2:39, "For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself."God is the one that calls people to himself and he does it when we proclaim the gospel. The reason why we focus on these three things, worship, community and service, is because that's what the early church focused on. It worked. And then practically speaking, it does leave margin in your life to actually think about unbelievers, and about how we can welcome unbelievers into our life and share the gospel with them. 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, "I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he or waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth." My favorite thing is seeing all of this actually happen. And a lot of it, if you come to one service, you don't see all the inner workings. I had a gal approach me after this first service, and said, "I don't know what's happening. I feel like God's calling me to himself." And this is a person that grew up around here. This is Boston Boston. And she's like, "What is happening?" I was like, "I think you might be elect." This is my new way of sharing the gospel by the way. I'm trying it out. When I share the God, I asked people, "Do you think you're part of the elect?" "What does that mean?" "Well that means you repent of your sin and trust in Jesus Christ." "Oh, I'm not sure about that." "Well we should talk about that." So God's doing it. This is incredible. I was at a wedding yesterday where we see this happening. Where a gentleman meets a gal, and the gal at Mosaic gets saved, grows, and now there's a family. We see this over and over and over. There's nothing that brings more joy to my heart than all of this. So we focus on what God told us to focus on, and then we watch God do the work and get all the glory. If you come from another part of the country where churches are wealthier, and they have more infrastructure, and they can hire more people, they can do a lot more stuff than just worship, community, and service. It's easy to come to a place like Boston and be like, "Okay, where's all the stuff? Where's the group for people who are exactly like me, in the exact life stage? Where's the group for 25 year olds, 25 and a half year old? I want all of my needs..." And we're like, "Why? There's like three Christians in Boston. What are you talking about?" No, we're lucky to have a church. We have people show, be like, "Okay, where's your college ministry?" I'm like, "Here it is. This is our church." And if I were to go somewhere else, to a big megachurch, I would do the same thing as we do here because that's what they did in the very beginning and that clearly worked.A lot of churches, they're built like a cruise ship. And by cruise ship I mean like the place you go where it's, for vacation cruise ship, and Mosaic isn't built like a cruise ship, it's built like a battleship. And the church is many things. It's a family, it's a bride, but it's also an army. And once you live in Boston for a while, you realize spiritual warfare is real. And I need not people who want to be entertained around me. I want people who are willing to go to war with me. And if we were attempting to lead a cruise ship, we would navigate toward safe waters. We would worry about keeping people busy and entertained, not productive. We would put all our efforts into making sure those on the ship were comfortable and all their preferences were considered. If you were choosing a cruise ship, you would choose it based on the ports it was visiting, the quality of the room, the activities that were offered after dinner, et cetera, et cetera.I've never been on a cruise ship. I think I should go, one of these days, just for illustration purposes. Just to tell you, you know what, we're not like that all inclusive buffet. That's not us. No, we're a battleship. Our ship has a purpose, has meaning, there's a mission. Everybody has a job. We want all hands on deck. And whatever the job is, it seems meaningless at the time, but all together it has incredible meaning. If you are choosing a battleship, you got to choose a battleship based not on your preferences, but based on the flag that it flies. And at this church, there's only one flag that we fly and that's the flag of Jesus Christ. Well like, why? Well Jesus, what, then why is it a battleship? Well, when you fly the flag of Jesus Christ as the only flag in Boston, yeah, you're going to realize there is spiritual war. When you say that Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven, the only way to God, the only way to have your sins forgiven. That there's no other way. Well all of a sudden that's controversial.Or that Jesus is Lord over everything, over sexuality, over gender, over family, over marriage. He is Lord over money. He's Lord over your, He's Lord over everything. Then you realize, yeah, I should probably be on a battleship in Boston instead of a cruise ship. So we're welcoming you into that battle. We're welcoming you into the church and we'd love to have you join us.In conclusion, in the beginning, God created everything, and we rebelled, and we broke the heart of the creator. And we were left famished in our sin, famished at the soul level because we cut ourselves off from the source of life. Then Jesus Christ comes and he is life. In him was the life. And He says He is life because He is the bread of life. Jesus Christ, the Word of God, becomes the bread of life. He's born in Bethlehem, the house of bread, and he comes and he tells the disciples, and he tells everyone who was listening, "If you don't eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no part of me." What is he talking about? Well, Jesus is the bread of life and his blood is what saves us. So he's saying in the same way that when you take communion, you take the bread that's broken, that's to remind you the body of Christ is broken for us. You take the cup, which is to symbolize the blood of Jesus Christ. You eat, and you drink, and what you're doing is you're internalizing, it's becoming part of you. The bread and the cup, the body and the blood's becoming part of you. And this is to remind us that this is how we get saved. When you hear the gospel of Jesus Christ, and you realize that God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whosoever should believe in him should not perish but have eternal life. When you realize that He who knew no sin became sin so that we might become the righteousness of God. When you realize that it just takes faith to clinging onto Christ. It takes humility, a repent of sin, and you internalize what Christ did. Well, that's what saves you. When we recognize that his precious blood, poured out on the cross, has atoned for our sins, then we are eating his flesh and drinking his blood. This is exactly what happens when you take the bread, when you take the cup, and you realize Jesus is part of me. He's in me and I am in him. If you're not yet a Christian, you're not sure you're a Christian, I appeal to your soul right now, not your mind. I'm appealing to your soul. Let your soul cry out to God.You soul knows what to do. Just let your soul cry out. Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, a great sinner. Cry out, receive the grace, receive the mercy, and welcome to the family. This time we turn to holy... Oh, and if you pray to receive Christ today, if you become a Christian today, recommit your life, Pastor Andy will be up here right after the service. He'd love to pray with you.For whom is holy communion? It's for anyone who needs grace. For anyone who's received grace. It's for Christians. So if you are not sure if you're a Christian, we ask that you refrain. Or if you are a Christian living in unrepentant sin, known and stubbornly unrepentant, we ask that you refrain. This isn't going to help you. This is only going to cause harm. Instead take the time to repent and if you do truly repent, you're welcome to partake.1 Corinthians 11:23-32, and as I read the text, if you haven't received a wafer and a cup and you'd like to partake, raise your hand as I read the text. One of the ushers will give you one."For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and he said, "This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant of my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.Whoever therefore eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and the blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned with the world."Would you please pray with me over holy communion.Holy Spirit in the same way that you poured out your power on the early church, we cry out for the same. Lord, we know we're not worthy of your presence, we're not worthy to experience your power. We're not worthy to be used by you. Only Jesus is. And Jesus, we thank you for your sacrifice on the cross. Right now, Lord, we're doing this in remembrance of you. Your body was broken as you hung on that tree. On that cross, your blood was poured out for us. Jesus, you gave everything because you loved us to the end. And then on the cross, Lord, in your last gasp you said, "It is finished. The work is accomplished." We thank you for that. Holy Spirit, apply the gospel afresh anew in our hearts right now. We repent of all our sin of rebellion, of breaking commandments, pretending commandments don't exist, of worshiping anything other than you, worshiping creature rather than creator. We repent of all that Lord and we receive your grace and mercy and we thank you for it. And continue to us this powerfully. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen. There's two layers to take off. Take the first one off, take the wafer. And the second one off and cup is open.On the night that Jesus Christ was betrayed, he took the bread, and after breaking he said, "This is my body broken for you, take, eat, and do this in remembrance of me." He then proceeded to take the cup and he said, "This cup is the cup of the new covenant, my blood, which is poured out for the sins of many. Take, drink, and do this in remembrance of me."Lord, we're reminded of your invitation, Isaiah 55, where you tell us, "Come everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good and delight yourselves in rich food, incline your ear, and come to me here that your soul may live."Lord, we thank you for speaking these words to us. We thank you for creating us with eternal souls. We thank you for saving our eternal souls. We thank you for satisfying our souls, nourishing our souls. And we pray that you continue to sanctify our souls by the washing of water with the word. Not for our glory, Lord, but only for yours. And we do ask that you use us, Lord. Use us individually and use us as a church. Keep us faithful and make us fruitful and do it all for your glory and our joy. We pray all this in Jesus name. Amen.

Like all cities, Boston is a composite of many cities, many histories, and many realities that play out across neighborhood, race, ethnicity, and class. Yet Boston stands out in its extremes. While Boston thrives, its innovation and tech economies sore, housing development booms, there is perhaps no other US city with as stark a difference between those thriving and those surviving. Boston’s wealth gap between white residents and residents of color is one of the largest in the country. In this episode of Power of Good, I interview those who are telling this story of a divided Boston – Boston residents, Kafi Dixon and Carl Chandler, and Tim McCarthy, a Harvard Lecturer. The three of them met in The Clemente Course (www.clementecourse.org), a rigorous community-based humanities class taught in 34 sites across the U.S. The Clemente mission is to foster critical thinking through deep engagement with history, literature, philosophy and art history. Kafi and Carl were students in the Clemente course, Tim was one of the course professors, as he has been for over 20 years. While in the course, they also met James Rutenbeck, a documentary filmmaker, with plans to capture and share the transformative learning of the Clemente class experience. James quickly gravitated towards Kafi and Carl – and as the film project progressed, it changed direction. Dramatically. It became not only about the course - but also about the lives of Kafi and Carl and their experiences in a racially and economically divided Boston. Kafi, Carl, and Tim joined me to share their perspective on the transformative nature of the Clemente Course, their experience making the film, and their guarded hopes for what Boston might become in the future.

thursday February 18 2021 and now live from las vegas your host of The Hockey Betting Podcast Brian Blessing the alarm clock hey everybody tweets properly oh my god i'm going crazy all right we can do the podcast let's see tonight Ottawa Toronto you already saw for two weeks uh Islanders Pittsburgh uh you already saw it Boston yeah don't worry you'll be seeing it hey look the Flyers are back okay we can talk about that one [Laughter] oh good god Arizona and st louis for the eighth time but uh Arizona's playing good some good hockey but anyway Brian uh where where do we start with the Leafs and senators uh part three part 11. lisa three bucks again otto Ottawa beat him took him to the mat yep he hadn't had a 10 bill chance to tie the game what is this all right so it is it's the third one otto was playing hard they are i mean what do you do you know what it was honestly here's all the clowning aside though you know a new series first game high second game low now we get to the third game now that's our we get we got to extend our what do we do with the third game i guess you just go with a better team i guess i guess i don't know we can like there's really no like i got to create a database or something for these type of things i don't know even know what you call it but i gotta believe Ottawa falling short and playing so well this could be the game Brian where you know what i mean like they're almost out of gas and the Leafs like pump them like a six to three type of game like that's the vibe i'm getting from it we've Ottawa has been a great live bet we talked about it like some of the books you know you're getting plus two plus two and a half when they're down a goal and they're hanging in every game like let's call it for what it is the least shouldn't be a minus 310 but you got to believe though uh Brian they you know the Ottawa is getting some good goaltending too they got great student you talked about him batherson they got some good young players on that team but i gotta believe oh here we go like they might be out of gas here's our angle i guess third game if it was going to happen it's going to happen matt murray versus hutch oh a touch oh boy will the Leafs play for hutch question even if they do help they probably you know otto was still going to like the land but if they don't it's a track meet yeah i like the over i agree i don't think he could touch Toronto if hutch like vomits all over himself as you like to say Brian it might be like 5-4 Ottawa or the Leafs can play for this guy in Ottawa still going to get a couple yeah six and a half yes over tough card though yeah no i know like it's all kind of bleeding into each other you know what's funny buddy i mean you're saying that but it's like you're right it's like it is no normally right say this is a year ago when you know life is normal and you know we're not wearing masks and you're not dropping car keys in the snow and all that kind of thing and you look at the the nhl card you go oh yeah i like that i like that that one i like that now you're sitting there going it's a rubik's cube like well how many times have they played each other it's it's weird it is it is weird but yeah i think Ottawa Toronto over the way to attack it guys if you're listening to the program like Brian i like we've been we've been pretty solid but in dead yeah no in all seriousness it's a hard card like Ottawa's played these guys tough you get a backup goalie i think the leaf should win the game and the game goes over but at 310 if you like the Toronto side Brian it's either parlay material with uh somebody else or you know what i mean the over i think is a good way to go about it all right got one for you here the Islanders are at pitch oh i'm listening and i'm listening all right the pens are a dollar twenty so be it plain better uh but here's the deal they've only played once this year was a 4-3 game and the Islanders we we said it's how hard is it would it be to bet Pittsburgh under you know so it's casey the smith you know var lamov is really good he's seven two and two his goals against is one eight nine but you had the Islanders who just played the Sabres twice and they got the lead in both games Cam and literally it was like python time if you're wearing green and red you know it looked like jacques lemaire's left wing lock devils and the Sabres couldn't do anything about it you know it's the first game of a new set here i think i'd kind of go with the over five and a half i mean you're not going to get many Pittsburgh games that are five and a half and and for llama was really good but crosby malkin blah blah blah i mean i think Pittsburgh you know certainly can pot a couple here where the Sabres couldn't i think i'd i'd fire back with the over here first game of a new set between these two i don't have a problem with that and yeah the Islanders you know they can kind of dictate styles sometimes and you said it like the sabre's not even getting a shot in the third period of game that's insane it looks like they're getting back to their old islander ways under barry trots and they weren't playing well before i got to be honest with you too Brian you look at that price you know you're going to give me the Islanders they're a hot team like they swept Buffalo it's like are they just going to like take the night off they don't seem like that team they're very streaky but this streak could go on for a while they're actually understanding hey we're a good team you know we've always been playing this way the last couple years they've been great to us as dogs and i don't really feel comfortable laying 20 25 cents with Pittsburgh i lean to the Islanders in this spot jersey in Boston Boston is a big favorite you know about 230 yeah totals five and a half listen the devil's lindy rough whatever he's doing you know i mean he's making great job so they come off the long ridiculous layoff and they beat the rangers 5-2 well okay you're jumping into the deep end of the pool with who you're shooting at tonight i i think i think you come back if jersey's playing good and hard and they're in this game with Boston it's it's a low scoring game it's a 2-1 kind of game the way jersey's playing give them credit they're playing good i'd kind of go i'd go under the total here i agree with you i think uh Boston wins this game three to one maybe you know four to one tops we get the five and a half that hook is really important i also think Boston's parlay material the devils were playing the rangers it was 2-2 they exploded in the third period to win that game Brian i got to give them full marks you said lindy ruff's done a great job but uh Boston is a different animal uh like they're at home they're just one of these teams even if they're down you still think they can come back uh i see a low scoring game as to Boston and parlays maybe even on the puck line but you said it could be a two to one three to one type of game but i agree with you under five and a half all right then we get in it's a hard team to trust but let's just go with our theory nashville's at columbus columbus is minus a quarter the total is five and a half bottom line is here you know this nashville thing is a dog's breakfast i it's the first game of a new set it's rinnie versus mers leakings and i would lean over but i also would say i'd go columbus's way i mean nashville's desperate but it looks it looks pitiful but uh what do you call it our boys here columbus just got embarrassed 7-3 and it's one thing when a team gets embarrassed to bounce back it's another thing for a team to get embarrassed with tortorella as the head coach i couldn't agree more nashville to me is fade material is actually going to load up on the dallas game before the power outages Brian and yeah not just colder we got deal with storms in in dallas just a crazy year altogether but columbus is only 25 cents i like the over i think they can get there themselves i don't trust the nashville predators in any type of situation if they beat us so be it but i like columbus in this spot and i like the over i think columbus will win this game like five to five to two all right last game for the Flyers they beat the cab 7-4 that was February 7th so here's another one of these teams coming off the shelf and it started out Cam okay this is unbelievable these teams coming off the shelf for winning well the devils pulled it off the Sabres in minnesota didn't they not though it was one and two yeah and they're they're playing the they're playing the rangers here but the one thing is hart's a different goalie home in a way i you know rangers coming off of laws i probably lean philadelphia's way but you know what too many unknowns it's a coin flip because of them coming off the shelf i like the under i think at five and a half um not my favorite game on the board but the rangers play those low scoring games and the devil's kind of exploded on them i don't know what uh the loss of uh trouba on the defense four to six weeks he's out for they were already a little bit thin when d'angelo left the team but they were playing better so i i got to tell you Brian with with the rangers there i kind of like them as a sneaky like small little dog tonight i think the line tells you that the books are afraid like they should have made philadelphia like a buck 25 a buck 30. we're opening up at a buck 15 that tells me something it's not our first rodeo i think the rangers might be live i see like a a two to two very tight game maybe the rangers steal one in overtime or shoot out i like i like them as a small dog in this uh spot maybe the under but i like uh yeah i think that's the way i'm gonna go with this game i think i'm gonna take a shot with the rangers and the under i and when i talk about this kami i may make this sound like and i may tug myself into this being maybe one of the better plays on the night for a myriad of weird reasons st louis puckline san jose at st louis and saint louis dollar 86 but the total is sitting at six well it's five and a half over a quarter or six under a quarter i think this is one of those breath of fresh air games i think there are goals galore in this game you had st louis play Arizona seven games in a row yep okay san jose had been scoring goals then they played vegas and they played anaheim who can't shoot it in the ocean two low scoring games i think these two teams specifically st louis is going to be thrilled to see anybody else they don't know each other hate each other yet first game of a new set i i think this is goals i think this is an over game i i think it's i think it's my best bet on the card tonight is san jose st louis over i like saint louis and i like the over is what we talk about if you get the five and a half i wouldn't be shocked if st louis put put up a five spot this is a team that's coming off a loss to Arizona they're gonna be angry they didn't bury their chances san jose they're not the defensive monster that Arizona has we got to give Arizona credit like you know what i mean they're getting great goaltending and they're playing a great defensive system they got good young players back then san jose they got guys like me and you out there Brian they're all they're older veterans and i got to be honest with you in my opinion i think the whole san jose team should be for sale and try to rebuild because you're going nowhere with this club st louis is going to be absolutely pissed the way they played against Arizona some of those games in the series they look bad i think st louis yeah they can hit the total themselves i think they blow these guys out of the water six to three type of game give me the blues to just go back to the theory that we've been talking about that seven game set all right with Arizona game one i gotta let me go back here so long ago all right game one four three over we had the app over yep all right game two actually Came back and was four three it was over two then but they split okay so different team won then you went under over under over under yep every other game is different in terms of adjustments that are being made and that's what i'm saying you're seeing a fresh face there's no adjustments go out and play hockey and you know santa's san jose got more than enough guys can put the puck in the net and with perron and o'reilly and those guys are going to be pissed they're like they're i expect points from o'reilly perron and the rest of these guys tonight even their defenseman you know tory kruger i think could have a big night i i just love the blue the blues are professional organization the way they played against Arizona you could tell berube like he's gonna light a fire under these guys and san jose could be in big trouble i'm with you buddy we'll see how this first game goes over i'm taking i'm taking the home team too it will be parlayed with some other dance partners but uh i couldn't agree more at the total of five if you the six i'm not worried about they they post a six to scare you we're we're going to go for it we're not scared over how about la and anaheim and i would just i will what's going on now no no no here's i mean you you gotta it's honestly god bless you you just sit back relax and you know drink your eureka live and whatever free golovk yep but when i do this it's like okay here's the game then i got like five browsers here's where they oh i know you do that's why you're the host of the show right no no but no so so i'm like okay so i get the starting point now i'm off to the third browser then i'm like well wait a minute what was the damn game yeah exactly but it's la elena Arizona but does Arizona land a dollar sixty wait no thanks i know what i like well the kings have won two in a row i know and they're playing better hockey but they still don't score Arizona likes to play a slow game i see what do you see a two to one game here i don't see six goals in this game maybe it's a sneaky over but well i just i know i know this and i kind of like Arizona they're fun to watch a little bit they are but uh they're not a dollar sixty favorite in this game that's oh it's it's high and i won't be betting Arizona this is a game that could trip people up the old add the parlay game because i think people just put in Arizona or uh you know just try to get get that thing boosted but hey let's give Arizona full marks they played well in those games against st louis they've really tightened up defensively their goaltending's been fantastic uh but i'm not laying 60 cents so for me it's the under and i'm going to pass on the side in this game lean to Arizona but i don't want to take it you know we are absolutely pally doing the we're doing the wrong thing after all these years be tough to start over but we should be a hockey agent i mean i mean this this kid zach white cloud with vegas is making 70s in the offseasons his first full year he was like phenomenal in the bubble and the kid signs a two-year deal for 725 000 a year i'm like who the hell is this guy's age and he's playing better than petrangelo right now i know the guy's good okay okay so there's that one but the other one is here i'll give you Arizona i'll say i will say you'll get it in you'll get it now get who the name the top three guys for Arizona that right now i'd say clayton keller uh who else is on that team's on fire right now uh yeah you're right oh god that's all right i'm sorry it's early no this connor garland guy harland garland garland connor garland you're right garland he is on fire he's awesome this guy's making seven hundred thousand dollars a year that's stupid that's uh i gotta be honest with you let's get Arizona because talking those guys they're not playing with a full deck either like they have to deal with people not wanting to go there the hockey market's not as big as some other ones you know i know i complained before this this and that about the game against the blues but you know when you watch Arizona night after night like you get a respect for that team like Brian you said it that's an absolute steal this guy's one of the best young players in the league he's great for under a million yeah no that's the thing see we wouldn't i don't know how i have no qualifications to be an agent what do i do just sit back there and get hey my clients he's pretty good you know well you can't be any worse than white cloud and garland's agent is my point yeah yeah i know they could have picked us yeah yeah that's the thing we've just been down for beers with them and said hey we'll represent you hey don't you think this guy should get like 2.5 a year oh yeah yeah okay okay how hard is it no Arizona yeah you know you got me thinking Arizona it might be the play there i just don't like the juice what are we going to do with uh no errors you said it karner garland underrated and they got a lot of good young players in that team they're even they're like chitran on defense and these other guys like they're they're know what they are they're guys you don't know about if you don't watch every night but they're all like young and above average that's the thing they got a nice little base there uh minnesota anaheim Brian that's the last game on the docket do we come back to minnesota they really let me down well they got their legs under them you give them a pass for the first game i'll give them ass but they better take care of business tonight because i think i'm going to bet them yeah no i know i mean oh by the way i'm scared anaheim if you're into numbers if you're into such things betting yeah which uh anaheim's got the lowest goals a game one point nine four a game it's hideous what do you think about the total you know everyone's going to smash the under this maybe minnesota figures it out tonight they were horrible against l.a well if you know they get their legs and it's the first of a two-game set just blindly going on the theory over first game under second i you know i guess but there's other other options by the way it's not the last game on the card there's a write-in game because yeah even though i'm looking at the time why is it why is it at the bottom capitals because my friend the sabers you know what Brian i'm gonna do something stupid Buffalo lost two games to the uh Islanders this is a Cam Stewart special season's over i didn't give up on vancouver remember a lot buddy when we were doing our podcast hit edmonton and coover last night people were calling me like insane for taking vancouver they murdered calgary that night they can fight back Buffalo this is it this is your stanley cup this is everything you historically play washington tough i'm going to take a shot with the Sabres as my ugly dog with rabies of the night who really needs help and if this dog doesn't win unfortunately i can't take care of him anymore like sorry old yeller he gone i'm not i would never build a dog but i gotta get away you know what i mean like my friend aren't you a little surprised honestly that when you you see some of these outlandish numbers in who the favorites are there's just so much talent on that team that they're right now they're the numbers telling you Buffalo they're playing you know like here would you have made washington after losing two games to uh buck 80. yeah but yeah yeah but here's Buffalo coming back off the shelf two games where they they barely showed up against the Islanders and you know they lost three one and three nothing you know and it's only a dollar it's only a dollar seventy it is almost like they're trying to tell you something it's a trap i'm i'm on Buffalo and uh let me come in regulation or plus one and a half just for safety but i'm on Buffalo this breaks my heart it breaks my heart because you're gonna bet on washington no no no i it breaks my heart because i love the guy but i'm telling you i'm watching michael and body language is not good it's not it's not good and you know by the way a with the crew that they've had they're in there defensively you got to find out because it's a big difference and especially if he if he does come back tonight and i i can't find it he has an in-game war every game and it's pretty impressive is risto linen and ovechkin literally can't stand each other i mean they throw three or four checks where they're trying to murder each other every game but ristolina was not playing in those first two games his absence i mean they made those guys made ristolina look like a norris candidate yeah him not being in the lineup in their own end colin miller is brutal i mean he could get him like watching the sabers like i don't know Brian we have enough problems in our life that's just one that we don't need but i'm thinking about what i do you know i could see the text me texting you can you Brian i can you believe i brought the saber slam exclamation mark i am a complete stooge but i'm doing it i'm doing it you didn't hear it from me all me you guys can all the complaints about the hockey podcast if to say i'm just saying the sabers could be live i don't know well you know why if they win this game i'll tell you this if they win this game and he's capable of it they are capable no it was all mark and then it was omar is way better than hud i agree with that all right so they get all marks getting the start tonight you know what here's the thing about washington you're coming out that big win a bit against Pittsburgh Buffalo comes to town a team that she's like Buffalo i just see washington coming out cold i'd actually take know what a good bet might be Buffalo first period if they come out if they show any type of pride they come out and get a lead in this game we got to move on from this but then actually we do holy cheese yeah no no but the real quick the one thing washington coming out of the gate you had samsonov and the vinichek kid and the vinichik kid stood on his head and carried them through you know a time when all those guys were out there when that kids hit a wall yeah you know what is it going to be uh samson off luggage tonight i even like Buffalo more than i don't care who's in that no it's energy it's omar convinced this kid into the ground Buffalo i know i'm taking a shot with Buffalo Buffalo if you're listening this podcast i know you're not but anybody your boy krueger your my son says your company stinks yeah it stinks and i'll say this Buffalo show up tonight and get it done this is a spot you said it Brian like if these guys lose this game i don't know where they go for they're honestly i mean i'm you know i'm a big stick they're losing their fan base they are because people are up in arms what do they do for their fan base nothing hey listen skinner's making nine million and then you know what and they're they threw him up with michael nothing he's playing hard but he's he cannot score and you know who's costing himself a a brinks truck every night out there taylor hall yeah looks like junk right now he signed a one-year eight million dollar deal i mean it's to the point where the sabers don't want him that's a horrible deal like you know think about all the young players you talked about Arizona and then we look at taylor hall former coyote making eight million dollars and playing like that sorry that's you know what Brian you should be hired by the Sabres sabers if you're listening Brian Blessing i guarantee can do a better job than some of the guys you have uh in that organization it's disgusting but you know what i'm gonna give him one more shot Brian if they lose you'll get a text from me saying uh yeah you should have told me so but i i gotta have faith in this uh streak ending let's rock on uh let's do it let's let's get the next here it's The Hockey Betting Podcast uh we want you to check out the website okay and we've got the banners there and there's incredible sign up offers uh get in there play along with us go to the website uh and listen the hockeybaitingpodcast.ca get in there and have at it yes yes and i will have at it Brian i will thursday i'm gonna tell you man i'm right like i'm ready to go what are we on here friday no no no yeah yeah yeah great we did a show last night yeah how delirious you are we're doing a show on wednesday night you said thursday like three times i'm like kiddo i know i did kiddo uh i don't know you know i don't know where the atomic clock stops in canada but you're it's going really fast you're a day ahead no you're right Brian i just said i'm like it was like the third time every time you said it i said yeah i don't even know and then i see and then the first thing i see is tweet sent out tweets out you guys ready yeah we're ready down boy what do we do caroline caroline yeah i almost fell off my recliner which is hard to do because i there's such a dent in it but but mine is pretty dangerous but chicago i look i go what like chicago's tied for first in the central then i'm like oh oh okay well that's great yeah but everybody's got four games in hand in them they're the one team that played they're the one team that's been playing games straight through but but nonetheless you gotta give them credit at nine five and four because they looked terrific in the beginning i'm gonna tell you i will give them credit but also beating up detroit every night should i should i be impressed no i'm not and i'll tell you one thing carolina's like this is a two dollars puck line parlays like carolina lost to florida that game chicago they should have lost to detroit i watched the game like they got dominated and they that goalie they got oh man he's good he's been standing on his head there Brian was a cat you know the guy i'm talking about the finished kid he's uh he's unbelievable he's unbelievable he's been they've been getting great goaltending i'm on the lagging kid lacking yeah locking in is not lacking talent i can tell you that lacking in is unreal he's been playing good and the only reason i could lose this game is because of lacking in but i'm on carolina to blow these guys up i'm sorry i opposed that get right guys i apologize for not like being immediately there to cover you i'm multitasking you know it's not a hockey podcast but the eagles just traded carson wentz to the colts for a second rounder and a conditional second that can turn into a first nfl nfl carousel quarterback carousel yeah yeah yeah carson we're gonna get two first round picks and whatever get bent anyway carolina is the play for me Brian i wouldn't be surprised if they hit uh over six and a half i see carolina if the goalie in chicago doesn't stand on his head he might give up five or six alone florida going into detroit sasquatch foot laying a dollar seventy i might take detroit i'm telling you this team is snake bitten did phil florida feeling good about themselves these are the games that i like that fall under the radar detroit's actually played well against florida this year too plus 150 you got me thinking i'll tell you one thing i'm not betting florida Brian what do you think it'd be puckline or nothing for me i mean for florida yeah they're detroit can play detroit's beating these guys four to one they like overtime games against florida they're snake bitten like detroit destroyed scalded me a couple of times in games at the over a couple of times in the last 10 days with these guys post you know i know always adam's apple falls just out like you can't you can't that's the thing i watch that give me a call post post post it's like man you should want you should have won this game sometimes those posts are gonna go hit the post and go in and you're getting these guys at a price i don't i don't know the total five and a half whatever i just think detroit might be live that's all all right we here we go tell me oh here we go battle all roberta part two they better give us a better shot one didn't happen no it sucked it was awful and now calgary should be coming in here good for you you had edmonton they got the win over winnipeg i know you needed that one yeah i did i ever but you know calgary is coming in here having what would they do they i guess not the end of the world they they smell they got smoked by vancouver they split those adults so it's not the end of the world and uh the thing i would say to be careful with edmonton and maybe calgary fell victim to it was the looking ahead to the battle of alberta i agree um but i like calgary here i like blood i like over blood teeth calgary yeah that seems about right uh all right been being vancouver's home oh god this game's giving me a headache already pick them vic over winnipeg vancouver it's a new series i mean yeah vancouver can score i'm sorry i'm sorry winnipeg can score vancouver's actually been playing better too uh yeah i can lean over i could see a five to four four to three type of game by the way winnipeg's found their offense they scored three three and five the last three games vancouver back home new new opponent oh and the the making you pay for it to get there but six and a half um you know there's a lot of a lot of skill guys out there yeah yeah yeah i i know i agree i i would i would still take the over in that game though Brian and you're right vancouver's a little they're playing a little bit better but still defensively their train wreck and winnipeg let's call it out for what it is they're they're no prize either they can let in goals so yeah the over's the way to go all right well i mean we could be here for a week uh you know doing the weekend here but that's that's the bed we've made so let's go uh saturday again you're looking ahead when we do this not knowing what results are of certain matchups Buffalo Buffalo new jersey i again do they show up in the makeup game with watching no they don't i'm going to tell you something if Buffalo beats washington i'm not really concerned about them stringing it together also Buffalo beat new jersey two times and both games were uh actually no one new jersey won the last time they played but they've been very tight games i gotta i gotta probably take new jersey in this spot Brian but well i'd this is the problem that's the new angle but wait a minute wait a minute it's the new angle that's never existed in hockey before okay how much should it be worth in the wagering Buffalo's got the covered revenge angle i mean new jersey new jersey gave them new jersey shut their season down and knocked them off the tracks maybe maybe they take it out on jersey i don't know about that they might yeah i love our theories i got no clue i leaned to new jersey vegas colorado now let's start the one thing i would say that by the way that Buffalo jersey game is a 12 30 start i've told you this before wait a minute Buffalo plays good in day games they really do they they they they score good in day games the one thing is uh you know the pre-game report they'll be doing covet testing at about 5 30 in the morning for that game i don't know i don't know how you know that no i'm with you i covered revenge i i don't know i don't know rangers caps real quick it's another day okay oh yeah you're right sorry this this my calendar is way too loud it goes from 12 to three hours it's hard to do this now you're waiting to see how the k how these teams played in the previous game uh again starting a new series let's do this one for sure we can we can dive into vegas and colorado it's the first of the two outdoor games and i'm telling you generally historically speaking with outdoor games you look to play the under and there's wind the ice is necessarily not as good the games can be dumped in chase games you scored the man advantage to score our face-offs that being said i think all these years i think they know what they're doing now and the ice is really good for these outdoor games and the weather Cam is going to be 40 degrees partly sunny partly cloudy if it's bright sunshine and this is my thing the forecast for sunday says a big yellow ball and if it but watch the pre-game show and the tune-up for this thing because they'll be the big hype machine before the game if it's bright sunshine let me tell you something the goaltender's got issues with the glare on the ice oh big time you ever played outdoor games i have when i was younger and we talked to gabe about it on game time decisions uh Brian on the grid and uh yeah it's horrible for a goaltender the glare you could put the the football dark stuff under your eyes it doesn't matter you're you talked about it you get glares you get weird angles goalies hate that stuff if the sun is bright over is the way to go even with these two teams the last time uh vegas and colorado played both games went to the under maybe they have a little bit of fun with it this is a very tough game to pick from a side but i'm probably gonna go with vegas in this sport exactly exactly that's a good angle too like when you play hockey the worst thing you can do is give up a goal in the first minute of the period or the last it really pisses you off and that beg is a talented enough team to hold their anger into this game let me let me ask you that my answer is these two teams are so evenly matched and that game the other night was one of the fastest games of the year great it was a great hockey i wonder if in colorado by the way talk to uh jeff sherman at the super book you know colorado even in vegas where all the money comes in on vegas colorado's like a 20 cent favorite over vegas if they were to play in a serie in a in the playoffs is vegas not a bad idea maybe in the first period with that stone in their shoe from the last game yeah yeah it's kind of like the way i looked at Buffalo and hopefully it works me yeah vegas first period i got no problem with that uh they can get out to the lead in that game no it's a good angle Brian i like it i still think we'll take a look at the weather could be over in this game but this should be a classic i leaned to vegas here by the way no small coincidence those two games went under and fleur you know number one and number two in the league in save percentage flurry and grubhour number one number two great defenses on both sides too colorado's probably got the deepest defense in the league vegas is amazing as well should be a lot of fun in this one and both offenses you said these teams are the total package if colorado's not winning the cup vegas should be right there Brian two of the best in the league should be fun the rich get richer i mean you had macar and gerard didn't play in these last two i would think they were sounded like they were close you got to see if either one of those guys gets in but you talk about just the rich getting richer they've got those two kids and now you throw this bow and by room in there Cam you have no i don't know how close you watch that game this kid was a stud up at the world juniors he played 25 minutes against vegas he was one of the best players on the ice he dangles he i mean he's 19 years old the blue line in colorado is gonna sick yeah no that's what they they lock up that blue line for a decade it's a good luck rest of the nhl because that's going to be a nightmare to deal with all right let's go to some of the different matchups um what you mean you mean Islanders in Pittsburgh no no i'm not doing it i refuse montreal is the play on okay no no no no i said the games let's not talk about the games that the first games of the series the fresh matchups here Toronto and montreal is one yes and uh Toronto had problems with Ottawa they get it done they still this team is just a little bit too cocky the the way they're playing i they they are shooting more pucks than that we talk about this but montreal also um you know Ottawa and montreal get up for playing Toronto i know montreal Came back the last time in a two-to-one victory is Toronto really gonna be that angry i don't think they are they're they're comfortable right now look at their record like 12 and three these guys are on fire i think montreal needs the game more even though they're very close to Toronto i would lean montreal in this spot this is coming from a guy who cheers for the Leafs i think montreal could be the play the rest of these basically are rematches with the exception i would just say this to you watch la Arizona watch the one specific i think you're getting goals see if i'm right i think you're getting goals in the first match up on thursday night san jose st louis if that is a high scoring game i would come back with the under in the second game of this game of this year but i think you can apply that to many of these matchups if the first game between these teams that are playing is high scoring you got to look under in the total in the second game we've told you that all year long for the most part it's absolutely working here's another one buddy tampa bay and dallas i don't know see that's why you're smart Brian i was going to go to that game you looked through everything with your with your laser eye and you saw that game this is the game we talk about because everybody everything else is a another rematch what do we do with this spot dallas no power ready to go i thought they were going to kick the crap out of nashville before that game got postponed you say a burr in their saddle i'd look for dallas to be live you know what pal maybe i'm crazy you know what buddy you know we taped this on uh thursday all right we do let's not waste a lot of time on this because the sad truth is with what's going on in texas this game may not go again yeah no you're right you're right but i'm saying if it does you're right though the dallas like what are they doing there's no power right but they were in a really good spot i thought before all this stuff happened and then to get right spot against nashville they lost heartbreaking games to carolina in those series Brian all games in overtime and every like what's happening to dallas and tampa bay rolls in there you know stanley cup rematch i think at dallas if they're going to play one damn game where they like throw everything at them the kitchen sink it's this game and they will be a home dog well buddy do you realize they got points in uh three of their last five but they lost all five of those games i know that's what i'm talking about i think it's a great spot for dallas other than the power situation in dallas and the cancellations against nashville they have the stanley cup champions coming in rematch anger there's a lot of things to like and everyone's going oh dallas what about the power and whatever you know the way these narratives work the opposite happens i'm with dallas i'm not falling for anything and if i lose this game that's my fault i'm on the stars all right and we've made it to sunday and we're looking at at the outdoor game philly and Boston now this is the one you know hearts really good at home rask is really good anywhere as long as he doesn't look at the scoreboard um that was a joke leaves the net up to one like what this is what you mean you mean you mean the thing that is the size of the house that is right in front of you that you're standing at all games like okay well like so is he the guy like the coach in cassidy calls a timeout uh tuko what do you think we should do what do we do what do we do this is the this is the over i like it i like it over here you know what i'm going over to everyone thinks philadelphia Boston but remember we have to pay attention to this stuff we got to see if the sun is shining watch this watch watch the vegas game see how the ice is but but the one thing is with the weather forecast and it is held true this entire week leading up it's a big yellow glob it's supposed to be bright sunshine uh for this game and it's going to be played at noon it'll go till whatever three o'clock so you know by the second and third period of that game the sun will be at its highest point now how they've got it set up the one the one difference may be is how exactly it may do our homework here how did they set the rank up it's one thing you could set the rink up on a golf course anywhere you want it the problem they've had in the in the past when you put a rink in a stadium you have to put it in that spot here they could they could massage and they can turn it however but they want the picture postcard or the lake behind them but you would think they've got it so that the sun is not facing either end you would hope but even if it's not i'm sorry there's still glare glare off the ice it is blinding it is that's that's that's the thing it's not like a controlled environment under weird lights that you go to watching a game in an arena this is outdoor you can't stop the sun there's no way to you know what i mean when he's shining down and if you hit a spot Brian it's gonna happen say there's a fast moving play basically you know what i tell these players just get in front of the goalie and screen them he's gonna have a nightmare the whole damn game like you know what i mean it's one of those things and and you know philadelphia Boston it screams a low total it'll probably be five and a half the guy it'll be like playing a bass bass playoff baseball game at chavez ravine at four in the afternoon where the first three innings there's the shadows and the hitters and you've got a guy setting a screen in front of the neck creating shade and then the comes out of the sunlight and goes like what the hell just happened that's the thing like it's not just going to be bad like i'm going to be we should track this how are the goalies confidence after this game too because it's going to be different in arena going for i don't know like are we scientists but at one thing no what i'm not if the sun is shining and there's glare we're going over in this damn well the funny thing is the funny thing is usually you look to fade the teams after the big experience of the outdoor game and the games are slower and then yeah but the vegas and colorado are playing each other so that one you can't even consider that all right so there's your little outdoor thing on sunday let me ask you montreal pending the result will probably be like a dollar what 60 something at Ottawa and otto was sitting there fresh as a daisy let me double check Ottawa is not playing montreal place Toronto the night before is Ottawa a barking dog yes Brian you you check check check Brian Blessings boxes triple b you checked them Ottawa waiting montreal emotional game versus Toronto Ottawa who do you hate montreal and Toronto they think you're the little brother that they beat up you're waiting for these guys Ottawa will throw the kitchen sink at montreal if they get any type of goaltending if montreal beats Toronto Ottawa will be a play and jersey washington get a new series started here that's a nationally televised game actually i think you got to watch the washington goalies here during the week i think these guys are a little bit worn down but you know the problem is throughout the course of a season like jerseys wants to believe that they're part of this and washington knows they are it's like how do these guys get up for these games exactly and another thing is let's keep an eye on the devils they're not the same old devils they scored four goals against the rangers team that all games went under maybe we look at the over Brian you talked about the capitals goaltending situation the devils are kind of a little bit of a different team and lindy ruff's a good coach they could kind of play that defensive style but they've been scored they can score too right you've seen them those games versus the sabers all went like almost everyone went over the number i i don't i don't think they're gonna hang a big one there i think probably the over i would look at in that spot all right and then check the friday result winnipeg in vancouver if you get the high scoring game think under and i would say i would consider strongly in this game and you know understand what we're doing here taping this heading into the weekend i would consider the team unless it's a boat race i would consider the team that loses the friday night game to come back in a revenge spot here on sunday exactly Brian that's one thing and you know by the time when we were taping our other stuff when we're doing all the various shows well who was i on edmonton revenge spot against the jets they won that game vancouver lost to calgary and a heartbreaker Came back and won that game that's a good angle that i like too you talk about the first game over under my team if they lose the first i don't get off them i come back to them and it's worked more than it hasn't there you have it all right the hockey bettingpodcast.ca click on the links there's great introductory offers at the the A collaboration of one. A struggling musician and MIT grad working at Polaroid builds a studio in his spare time, then invites his singing buddy over to lay down some vocals and a couple drummers to come in and lay down some drum grooves. What you get is one of the best albums in rock and one with arguably the strangest beginning. The album that ushered in corporate arena rock was made by hoodwinking the corporation that sprung for its creation. On this episode we look at Boston's first and best album.

With their self-titled debut album, Boston burst onto the stage with a sound that would come to define classic rock - "the Boston sound." Although an instant hit (it was the second best selling debut album in US history), it took several years for the demo tape to be accepted by a record label, and then would require some evasion of the label's wishes for MIT graduate Tom Scholz to be able to create the full album in his basement studio instead of taking it to Los Angeles. Driven by Brad Delp's soaring tenor vocals and Tom Scholz' work on virtually everything else, this album is a must-have in any rock lover's catalog - and that's more than a feeling! Foreplay/Long Time The instrumental prelude "Foreplay" with its distinctive triplet pattern is one of the first songs written, dating back to 1969. "Long Time" features the switch between acoustic and electric guitar that would be one of several signature features of the Boston sound. Peace of Mind This is the third single from the album. Scholz was working at Polaroid as a design engineer when he was shopping this album, and this song reflects Scholz thoughts on corporate life. Hitch a Ride This mellow track has a little bit of a hippie feel, but maintains a positive vibe that you see in the tracks on this album. The production on this track is amazing. Rock and Roll Band While this track might sound autobiographical, it is actually the opposite - it took a long time and a lot of work for Boston to get accepted. The band had never played live when the song was written. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: **Theme from "What's Happening" ** This TV show featured Dwayne, Raj, Dee, and Rerun. Hard to believe that Rerun was considered overweight by 1970s standards... **STAFF PICKS: ** “Last Child” by Aerosmith Rob's staff pick features another band from Boston, Aerosmith. Steven Tyler and Brad Whitford wrote this track for the album "Rocks", and if you listen, it has a similar sound to David Bowie's "Fame." “Devil Woman” by Cliff Richard It may have come out in August, but this is definitely a Halloween song. Cliff Richard is considered the "English Elvis," selling over 250 million records in his career. **“Afternoon Delight” by Starlight Vocal Band ** Brian's staff pick takes the tone down with this number 1 hit from the time. Starlight Vocal Band featured tight harmonies, and would parlay the song into a variety show, for which David Letterman would be a writer. “Still the One” by Orleans Bruce's staff pick also features close harmonies and a very positive take on long-term relationships. Joanna and John Hall wrote the song. Band co-founder John Hall would go on to be a congressman from New York. ***INSTRUMENTAL: * ** “Nadia's Theme” by Henry Mancini This instrumental hit was inspired by Romanian gymnast Nadia Comanici's scoring the first "perfect 10" in the 1976 Summer Olympic games.

We talk with percussionist Colin Currie, who discusses performing and recording Steve Reich’s seminal minimalist work Drumming. This week’s guest: Colin Currie Show notes: Steve Reich: Drumming (the original 1974 recording) Steve Reich’s Clapping Music app The score of Steve Reich’s Drumming Colin Currie Group Record Steve Reich’s Drumming Colin Currie Group at the Southbank Centre, London, May 5, 2017 Steve Reich: Tehillim & The Desert Music Steve Reich’s notes about Drumming: For one year, between the fall of 1970 and the fall of 1971, I worked on what turned out to be the longest piece I have ever composed. Drumming lasts from 55 to 75 minutes (depending on the number of repeats played) and is divided into four parts that are performed without pause. The first part is for four parts that are performed without pause. The first part is for four pairs of tuned bongo drums, stand-mounted and played with sticks; the second, for three marimbas played by nine players together with two women's voices; the third, or three glockenspiels played by four players together with whistling and piccolo; and the fourth section is for all these instruments and voices combined. While first player the drums during the process of composition, I found myself sometimes singing with them, using my voice to imitate the sounds they made. I began to understand that this might also be possible with the marimbas and glockenspiels as well. Thus the basic assumption about the voices in Drumming was that they would not sing words, but would precisely imitate the sound of the instruments. The women's voices sing patterns resulting from the combination of two or more marimbas playing the identical repeating pattern one of more quarter notes out of phase with each other. By exactly imitating the sound of the instruments, and by gradually fading the patterns in and out, the singers cause them to slowly rise to the surface of the music and then fade back into it, allowing the listener to hear these patterns, along with many others, actually sounding in the instruments. For the marimbas, the female voice was needed, using consonants like “b” and “d” with a more or less “u” (as in “you”) vowel sound. In the case of the glockenspiels, the extremely high range of the instrument precluded any use of the voice and necessitated whistling. Even this form of vocal production proved impossible when the instrument was played in its higher ranges, and this created the need for a more sophisticated form of whistle: the piccolo. In the last section of the piece these techniques are combined simultaneously with each imitating its particular instrument. The sections are joined together by the new instruments doubling the exact pattern of the instruments already playing. At the end of the drum section three drummers play the same pattern two quarter notes out of phase with each other. Three marimba players enter softly with the same pattern also played two quarter notes out of phase. The drummers gradually fade out so that the same rhythm and pitches are maintained with a gradual change of timbre. At the end of the marimba section, three marimbas played in their highest range are doubled by three glockenspiels in their lowest range so that the process of maintaining rhythm and pitch while gradually changing timbre is repeated. The sections are not set off from each other by changes in key, the traditional means of gaining extended length in Western music. Drumming shows that it is possible to keep going in the same key for quite a while if there are instead considerable rhythmic developments together with occasional, but complete, changes of timbre to supply variety. I am often asked what influence my visit of Africa in summer of 1970 had on Drumming. The answer is confirmation. It confirmed my intuition that acoustic instruments could be used to produce music that was genuinely richer in sound than that produced with electronic instruments, as well as confirming my natural inclination towards percussion (I became a drummer at the age of 14). The transition from glockenspiels to the last section of the piece, for all instruments and voices combined, is made by a new musical process I call build-up and reduction. Drumming begins with two drummers building up the basic rhythmic pattern of the entire piece from a single drum beat, played in a cycle of twelve beats with rests on all the other beats. Gradually additional drumbeats are substituted for the rests, one at a time, until the pattern is completed. The reduction process is simply the reverse where rests are gradually substituted for the beats, one at a time, until only a section leads to a build-up for the drums, marimbas, and glockenspiels simultaneously. There is, then, only one basic rhythmic pattern for all of Drumming. This pattern undergoes changes of phase position, pitch, and timbre, but all the performers play this pattern, or some part of it, throughout the entire piece. Spring is here and so is the sprint to the finish line for the Boston Celtics and the rest of the NBA.  The green team finds themselves right in the midst of the chase for the final two spots in the Eastern Conference NBA Playoffs.  Larry H. Russell will break down the week that was for the Celtics.  Was it a successful week? Two tough, but somewhat expected losses against two elite Western Conference foes in the Oklahoma City Thunder and the World Champion San Antonio Spurs followed the end of the Celts' five game winning streak.   Whatever one makes of it, it's in the books.  LHR will look ahead to what could very well be a make-or-break week for Boston's playoff hopes with huge games against foes like the Brooklyn Nets and the Miami Heat.  Let's not get ahead of ourselves either, as Boston has their hands full tonight when Greg Monroe comes to town with the rest of the Detroit Pistons.   And of course, the guest: LHR will be privileged to be joined by Basketball Hall of Famer Jackie MacMullan of ESPN Boston.  There are few in the media who know more regarding the state of the Celtics than Jackie, and she'll be sure to provide the Celtics Beat audience the lowdown on Brad Stevens, the Celtics now, and the Celtics in the future.  What does Jackie make of them? More importantly, what do those in an around the NBA make of the Boston Celtics franchise.   LHR will also wrap the show up by going Around the NBA in 5.   So tune in this Sunday for another edition of Celtics Beat, presented by lynda.com/clns and Peak Organic Brewing Company.  Available for download on iTunes and Stitcher Sunday, March 22, 2015.  Powered by CLNS Radio.
