I Was NYPD's Most Decorated Detective — This Is What Real Policing Looked Like in the 70s & 80s | Ralph Friedman

Locked In with Ian Bick

Ralph Friedman is the most decorated detective in NYPD history — with 2,000 on-duty arrests, 5,000 additional assists, and 219 awards — and in this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, he finally tells the complete truth about what policing in New York City's most dangerous precincts really looked like from the inside during the most violent and most lawless era available. Stationed at the South Bronx's notorious 41st Precinct — known as Fort Apache — he served during one of New York City's most dire periods, recording 2,000 on-duty arrests, 5,000 additional assists, and 15 shootings — four of them fatal — before a rookie in a radio patrol car T-boned his passenger door at high speed on August 1, 1983, leaving him with 23 broken bones including a pelvis broken in four places and a shattered hip that forced him into medical retirement at 34. He shares what the Bronx streets in the 70s and 80s really required of the officers working them, what criminals putting hits on him actually involved, the worst things he ever saw on the job, and what the stories from a career that produced the most decorated record in NYPD history actually sound like from the detective who lived every one of them. _____________________________________________ #NYPD #cops #truecrimestories #police _____________________________________________ Thank you to AG1 & HUNGRYROOT for sponsoring this episode: AG1: For a limited time, save 20% on your first subscription order of AG1 Next Gen or AG1 Pro at https://drinkag1.com/lockedin _____________________________________________ Hungryroot: Explore my Hungryroot Digital Cookbook "The Commissary Upgrade" at https://hungryroot.com/LOCKEDIN _____________________________________________  Connect with Ralph Friedman: https://www.bronxstreetwarrior.com/ _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/  _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction to Detective Ralph Friedman 00:22 Reflections on a Legendary Career 01:08 How He Became a Cop 03:25 First Day in the Bronx 04:34 An Officer's Gear in the 1970s 06:16 The Mental Toll of Policing 07:47 Public Respect and Deterrence 10:00 Case: Stopping a Justifiable Homicide 12:53 Public Sentiment Today vs. Back Then 15:08 First Arrest and Early Impressions 17:04 Specialization and the Black Liberation Army 19:34 Daily Danger and Chaos 22:40 Corruption and the Knapp Commission 24:16 A Rookie's Brush with Corruption 27:43 Changing Views on Women in Policing 29:57 Path to Detective 33:05 Plainclothes Work and Tactics 35:31 Shootout in the South Bronx 41:17 Aftermath of a Shooting 43:31 Close Calls and Street Survival Tips 47:20 Quirky Emergency Service Stories 51:03 Old School vs. Modern Training 53:52 Detective Work and Arrests 58:40 A Typical Day as a Detective 01:02:32 Taking Down a Gun and Grenade Cache 01:05:05 Reputation and Informants 01:07:55 Riding with Friends and a Street Crew 01:12:40 The Worst Call of His Career 01:14:40 When the System Fails 01:16:51 Fitting In with the Squad 01:18:04 Off-Duty Life and Arrests 01:21:28 The Attempt on His Life 01:27:07 A Date with an Assassin 01:29:25 The Trap Unfortunately Foiled 01:30:42 The Emotional Weight of Taking Lives 01:32:28 Respect eroding in Society 01:35:10 Detective Ranks Explained 01:38:41 Handling Bosses and Paperwork 01:40:41 The Frances Tavern Case That Haunts Him 01:45:40 Fighting Layoffs 01:48:41 The Accident That Ended It All 01:53:20 Recovery and the Next Chapter 01:58:40 Life Advice from a Legend 02:00:00 Final Thoughts and Thanks _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka

Erico Montalvo grew up in Rhode Island without a father in the picture and a mother too consumed by the streets to be present — and by the time the system found him he had already cycled through juvenile detention multiple times and built an identity that the streets had shaped long before he was old enough to understand where that path was going. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, he shares what happened just days after he turned 18 — an accidental altercation with a veteran that turned into a self-defense situation that ended in the veteran's death — and what being charged with murder instead of recognized as a victim of circumstance actually produced over the ten years he spent fighting his case from inside a Rhode Island county jail before finally taking a manslaughter plea deal and accepting a 13 year sentence. _____________________________________________  #prison #selfdefense #truecrimestories _____________________________________________ Thank you to FACTOR & HIMS for sponsoring this episode: Factor: Head to https://factormeals.com/lockedin50off and use code lockedin50off to get 50 percent off and 1 free breakfast item per box for 1 year, while supplies last until! _____________________________________________ Hims: Visit https://hims.com/lockedin to get a personalized, affordable plan that gets you. _____________________________________________ Connect with Erico Montalvo: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@RicoStillMadeit Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ricostillmadeit/ Website: https://linktr.ee/Ricostillmadeit _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Guest Introduction 00:22 Early Life in Providence 02:00 Mother's Mental Health & Upbringing 03:13 Father's Deportation 05:00 Feeling Like an Outsider as a Kid 07:36 First Wrong Turns & Finding Identity 10:31 Gang Culture in Providence 16:00 Homelessness & Juvenile Detention 19:27 Getting His GED in Juvenile 21:00 Sponsor Segment: Factor Meals 23:07 Turning 18 & a Spiritual Warning 28:00 Close Calls on the Streets 30:40 The Night of the Incident 37:22 Fight, Stabbing, and Escape 43:03 Learning the Victim Died 43:50 Realizing the Victim Was a Veteran 47:00 Hiding Out and Seeking Help 50:03 Getting Arrested 52:54 Interrogation & Initially Charged with Murder 01:00:00 First Lawyer & a Broken System 01:05:59 Meeting Dawn Huntley, a New Lawyer 01:09:32 Adapting to Prison Life 01:13:00 Finding Faith in Prison 01:21:00 Starting to Turn His Life Around 01:30:00 Facing a 60-Year Offer 01:37:00 COVID Stalls the Case 01:41:00 Considering Trial 01:49:00 A Shocking Plea Deal: 25 Years with 3 to Serve  01:55:50 Walking Through the Sentence 02:03:11 Release and Adjusting to Freedom 02:08:00 Finding Purpose and New Community 02:14:20 No Regrets and a Mission _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka

What happens when you build your work around the life you want to live? In this episode of On Adventure, Josh talks with Stefan Gruber, a climber, photographer, traveler, and customer success professional at Levitate. Stefan shares how remote work and his wife Sarah's career as a travel nurse have helped them create a life centered on movement, creativity, and outdoor adventure. They discuss climbing, film photography, international travel, dangerous moments in the mountains, and the judgment required to turn around when conditions are not right. At the heart of the conversation is a simple message: meaningful experiences should not always be postponed. In This Episode Building a mobile life around remote work and travel nursing Why climbing creates focus, presence, and flow Traveling through the American West, Poland, and Nepal The appeal of film photography and printed images Balancing documentation with being present Avalanche terrain, exposed climbing, and failed summit attempts Summit fever, risk assessment, and the limits of luck Future goals, including the Grand Teton and Colorado fourteeners Why Stefan believes in doing things while you still can Episode Chapters 00:00 – Colorado Springs and life on the move Josh and Stefan discuss Colorado Springs, choosing temporary homes, and the possibility of eventually buying land in Colorado or Montana. 11:00 – Stefan's career and lifestyle Stefan explains how he moved from a long corporate commute into remote work and began traveling with Sarah during her nursing assignments. 17:30 – Climbing, travel, and flow Stefan reflects on his Polish heritage, his early interest in travel, and the sense of complete focus he finds while climbing. 20:00 – Designing work around life The conversation explores the freedom and tradeoffs of building a career that supports travel, adventure, and flexibility. 24:00 – Poland and international travel Stefan describes Poland's cities, mountains, coastline, affordability, and cultural growth, along with other memorable travel experiences. 36:30 – Photography and creative ambitions Stefan explains how photography connects his travels and outdoor life. He also shares ideas for creating a travel channel with Sarah. 41:00 – Film, digital photography, and presence They discuss the visual character of film, the value of printed photographs, and the tension between capturing an experience and fully living it. 51:00 – Risk, fear, and turning around Stefan recounts dangerous moments involving avalanche terrain, exposed climbing, wildfire smoke, and two unsuccessful attempts on the Grand Teton. 57:00 – Summit fever and the limits of luck The conversation turns to humility, decision-making, and why surviving a poor choice does not make it a good one. 1:04:00 – Survival psychology and photography advice Stefan recommends Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales and encourages new photographers to begin with whatever camera they can access. 1:11:00 – Favorite mountains and future goals Stefan talks about the Tetons, Annapurna Base Camp, Denali, Everest, and his goals for the rest of 2026. 1:18:00 – Do it while you can Stefan closes with his belief that health, time, and opportunity are uncertain, so meaningful goals should not always be saved for later. Memorable Quotes "Sometimes those limits find you." "There's a certain store of luck, and it will run out eventually." "If it doesn't happen today, it can happen another day." "Do it while you can." Key Takeaways Build work around what matters. Flexible work can create more room for travel, relationships, creativity, and meaningful experiences. Turning around is not failure. Good judgment sometimes means abandoning a climb or summit and returning under better conditions. Luck is not a strategy. A successful outcome does not automatically mean the decision behind it was wise. Give photographs a life beyond the screen. Printing images or shooting film can make photography feel more intentional and lasting. Do not save everything for someday. Adventure can be a major expedition or a small personal goal. The important step is beginning while the opportunity still exists. This is another piece of HardLore history in the making, as we're joined by our first ever actor, the great Brooke Smith of Silence of the Lambs, Grey's Anatomy, Bates Motel and more!I am once again joined, very appropriately, by Alec Faber of Holy Blade, Twitching Tongues & God's Hate (and formerly of the Reel Deal podcast with… me)Long before she graced the silver screen as the iconic Catherine Martin in Silence of the Lambs , you could find her romping around all over the lower east side as one of the infamous WARZONE WOMEN, and a staple of 1980's New York Hardcore. She spent the golden decade of NYHC taking legendary photos of bands like Agnostic Front, Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, Underdog and more, as documented in her incredible book Sunday Matinee. We get into her life as a legendary publicist's daughter, befriending and falling out with the Cro-Mags, the informal formation of the Warzone Women, growing out of hardcore just as acting started to become more serious, her life changing by being in one of the greatest movies of all time, AGAIN with Grey's Anatomy, and everything in between… An incredibly fun conversation with a genuine legend. The Climbing Majority

The Southern Sierra is the quieter, less-traveled tail end of California's Sierra Nevada range — running from Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks down through the Kern River drainage to where the range finally peters out into the Tehachapi Mountains. It's a land of dense pine forests, hidden granite formations, deep river canyons, and small mountain towns like Kernville, Springville, and Porterville tucked into its foothills. For climbers, this region is a genuine treasure trove that remains largely under the radar. The Needles are the crown jewel — a cluster of striking granite spires rising out of pine forest above the Kern River, home to some of the finest crack climbing in California. Dome Rock offers accessible multi-pitch classics. Deeper into the range you find places like The Fin at Castle Rock, Homer's Nose, Hermit Spire, and countless other obscure formations that have been quietly developed over decades by small groups of locals. The rock is high-quality granite, often steep, often demanding, and almost always uncrowded.Culturally, the Southern Sierra has always attracted a specific kind of climber — someone drawn to first ascents, comfortable with long approaches, willing to work for solitude, and less interested in the spray culture of more famous destinations. The area saw a renaissance in the late 1970s and early 1980s when climbers from Los Angeles started making pilgrimages up to Kernville and Porterville, discovering that the Needles and surrounding formations offered climbing that rivaled anything in Yosemite — just without the crowds. Patrick Paul found himself right in the middle of this renaissance and became a pioneer in his own right, establishing 54 first ascents across the Southern Sierra over his 50 year career. In this conversation we go back to Patrick's tumultuous upbringing and how a single trip to Joshua Tree became the catalyst for an entire life pivot — one he's convinced saved his life. We dig into stories from his years on the rock, including run-ins with icons like Randy Leavitt, Lynn Hill, and Fred Beckey, and several close calls: an earthquake mid-approach, expanding flakes on Homer's Nose, and a moment when his main partner Richard Leversee saved Patrick from certain death when Patrick leaned back away from an anchor without being tied in.#livinglegend #firstascentsHelp Support The Show & Unlock The Ad-Free PodcastResourcesSome of Patrick's stories can be found in this book:Patrick's Facebook

Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond Episode 295 – From Charleston to Hampton: Groundings, Close Calls, and Coastal Gems Every cruising sailor has those passages that test both skill and resolve. This is one of them. In Episode 295, we depart historic Charleston and head north toward Hampton, Virginia, navigating the ever-changing waters of the U.S. East Coast. Along the way, we recount several unexpected groundings that serve as reminders that even experienced sailors can be humbled by shifting shoals and narrow channels. But it isn’t all adversity. We visit some of the most charming ports on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, including beautiful Beaufort, North Carolina, where Southern hospitality, waterfront scenery, and maritime history make it one of our favorite stops. Charleston, too, remains one of America’s great sailing destinations, rich in history, architecture, and unforgettable harbor views. Then comes the moment every cruiser dreads. Far from help, the engine suddenly dies. With little room for error and danger closing in, quick thinking and a bit of good fortune help us narrowly avoid what could have become a very serious situation. It’s a vivid reminder that on the water, things can change in an instant—and preparation, experience, and calm decision-making matter. Whether you’re planning your own voyage, dreaming about casting off the dock lines, or simply enjoy great sea stories, this episode is packed with practical lessons, memorable destinations, and the unpredictable adventure that makes cruising under sail so rewarding. After seven straight weeks of guiding spring black bears in British Columbia, Jay sits down with Mindful Hunter Outfitting guide Dimitri to wrap up the season. It was a grind of a year — 18 clients, endless rain, and some truly brutal pack-outs — but the final tally tells the story: 11 bears killed, 3 wounded, and 6 missed. In this episode, Jay and Dimitri break down the week-by-week action, from tracking down a 20-year-old toothless boar to packing out triple-digit loads in the dark. But the most important takeaway from the season is a harsh reality check on hunter marksmanship. They discuss why a 50% hit rate is probably the industry average, the importance of practicing off-hand and uncomfortable shots, and the controversial fact that every single miss in camp this year came from a hunter using a chassis rifle. The bottom line? Stop worrying about upgrading your gear and start putting in the reps.

If your idea of a relaxing weekend includes a rogue pit bull at a charity event, a haunted A-frame cabin, and a guy waking up to a stranger standing over his bed, congratulations—you've found your people. This daily comedy episode starts with a huge thank-you to everyone who came out for Operation Food Search and helped absolutely crush the food drive. The listeners showed up, stayed all morning, and filled trucks with donations because apparently our audience enjoys doing good deeds almost as much as they enjoy making poor decisions. Then things get weird.A listener decides that "leash laws" are more of a suggestion than an actual rule and lets his dog roam free through a crowded event full of kids, other dogs, and enough audio cables to shut down an entire broadcast. Somehow the dog behaves better than its owner.Meanwhile, one of us spends the weekend at Innsbrook, where a mysterious painting crashes to the floor at 4:15 in the morning immediately after watching old episodes of Unsolved Mysteries. Was it gravity? Was it ghosts? Was Robert Stack involved? We may never know. And then comes one of the wildest stories we've heard in a while. A heavily armed prepper moves into a new rental home, goes to sleep, and wakes up to find a man standing over his bed. The story somehow gets even crazier when it turns out the "intruder" is a realtor innocently showing the house because of a paperwork mistake. Nobody gets hurt, but everyone involved definitely needs a nap and probably therapy.Elsewhere in this daily comedy chaos:We debate whether Innsbrook is basically the Hamptons of St. Louis.Tim goes full cowboy mode at a Taylor Swift and Dolly Parton-themed party.Riz and Rafe perform a deeply uncomfortable rendition of "Islands in the Stream" at a wedding.Father's Day gifts range from practical torches to futuristic neck fans that look slightly ridiculous but feel amazing. We discuss alpha-gal syndrome, heat waves in Paris, and why every town in southern Illinois suddenly seems to be thriving.Basically, if your week has already gone off the rails and it's only Monday, this daily comedy episode is here to remind you that everyone else is figuring it out as they go too.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Alright, if you want a raw, unfiltered elk hunting conversation from a guy who is absolutely obsessed with the game — this is your episode. Brandon Schmitz out of North Idaho joins the show for his very first podcast appearance, and let me tell you, this dude brings it. No fluff, no highlight reel — just honest elk hunting from a guy who has spent the last six years grinding through some of the most demanding country in the West. Brandon didn't grow up with a silver spoon handed to him in the elk woods. His dad lost the fire for hunting after wolves moved into North Idaho and wrecked what used to be some of the best big game hunting in the country. So Brandon had to figure it out himself, and that journey is exactly what makes this conversation so good. From his very first elk hunt — where his cousin smoked a bull that basically walked up to a truck parked in the middle of the road — to going toe-to-toe with grizzly bears, packs of wolves, and rutting bull moose in the same drainage, this guy has seen it all. Six-plus years in, Brandon still hasn't notched his tag, but don't let that fool you. This dude is FINDING elk — like, legitimately locating 20-plus bulls in a single season. The problem he keeps running into is the same one that trips up a ton of DIY hunters: closing the deal. We dig deep into that in this episode, and I think a lot of you guys are going to hear yourselves in Brandon's story. We talk about the mental side of solo hunting, what it really means to "be in striking distance," how to work a bull when your setup goes sideways, the art of building a bull's ego so he's absolutely fired up the next morning, and why sometimes the laziest move IS the right move. We also get into the very real challenges of elk hunting in grizzly and wolf country, the predator management problem that nobody in power wants to touch, and what it's like to be solo in the woods surrounded by apex predators that don't have a healthy fear of humans anymore. This is one of those conversations that reminds you why we love this thing so damn much — even when it's hard. Maybe especially when it's hard. This Episode's Sponsors TricerIf you're not running Tricer gear in the field, you're leaving performance on the table. I'm a huge fan of the RP Bipod — at 10.5 ounces, it is flat-out one of the best hunting bipods on the market. It comes with long and short legs, works with Picatinny and ARCA systems, and for $350 you're getting features that compete with bipods that cost twice the price. I've shot a pile of critters off this thing and I wouldn't leave home without it. Tricer makes more than just bipods, too — go check out their full lineup.Shop now: tricer.com | Use code TRO to save 10% off your order.Bridger WatchI built Bridger Watch because I was sick of pulling my phone out 100 times a day to check onX. The idea was simple: put maps on the watch so hunters can keep their phone in their pack and their eyes on the country. We set out to build the best smartwatch ever made for hunters, and I genuinely believe we did just that. If you're a watch guy and a hunter, there is nothing else like this out there.Check it out: bridgerwatch.comTimestamp Chapters0:00 – Intro & Sponsor: Tricer RP Bipod2:15 – Sponsor: Bridger Watch4:00 – Welcome & Brandon's Background | Growing up in North Idaho, impact of wolves on his dad's hunting8:30 – Getting Hooked | Brandon's first-ever elk hunt, cousin CJ kills a bull, truck in the road, borrowed gear, high school kids packing meat17:00 – Six Years Deep | Journey from first hunt to now — tagged out? Stop Trying to Kill the Elk — Start Trying to Stay Close to ItOne of the most useful mindset shifts in this episode: instead of putting the pressure of "I need to kill this elk tonight" on every single move, just focus on getting into striking distance and staying there. Elk hunting rarely goes according to the exact plan, but things tend to happen when you're consistently close. Measure your days by time spent within range of elk, not by whether a shot materialized. This single reframe takes the anxiety out of solo hunting and keeps you in the game longer.2. Let Curiosity Kill the Cat — Silence Is a WeaponWhen a bull hangs up and won't commit, most hunters feel compelled to keep calling. Big mistake. A quiet elk is a suspicious elk — a quiet *location* is a curious elk. When you go dark after a bull responds, you're not losing the conversation, you're winning it. He'll start wondering where you went, and that curiosity will often pull him toward you. Learn to sit on your hands, let the shot clock run a little, and only break the silence if you truly feel him losing interest. When you do break it, try raking over calling — it's less demanding and gives you the chance to move.3. The Decision Fatigue Problem Is Real — Have a Plan and Commit to ItBeing physically tough enough to elk hunt is table stakes. The thing that actually determines success — especially for solo hunters — is the mental discipline to stick to a plan when everything is going sideways. It's easy to leave a drainage after a tough morning and convince yourself the elk blew out. It's harder to say "I committed to this spot for two days and I'm seeing it through." The hunters who string together good at-bats aren't necessarily the ones who work the hardest — they're the ones who make fewer panic decisions and have the confidence (sometimes fake confidence) to stay the course when doubt creeps in.

[This episode originally aired on August 20th of 2024][Watch this on YouTube]Seacoast Church was started in 1988 by Pastor Greg and Debbie Surratt who moved from Illinois to Charleston, SC in 1987 with their four kids, Jason, Josh, Jessica, and Jenny. Early on, their family endured life-threatening hardship—two of the kids surviving a massive car wreck and their oldest daughter, Jessica, surviving an extremely close-call in a jet ski accident. On this episode, Pastor Greg, Pastor Josh Surratt, and Jenny Mayer (the youngest of the bunch) sit down with host, Joey Svendsen to discuss those dark times, including the narratives of those dreadful accidents. They reflect on God's goodness shown through church community and ponder these early seasons in the context of spiritual warfare and God's sustenance. The three also treat the listenership to some fun stories with  hilarious insight on the Surratt family, back in the old days when our Lead Pastor, Josh Surratt, still got spankings. On this EpisodeJenny Mayer / Instagram Greg Surratt / Instagram Josh Surratt / Instagram Joey Svendsen, host / InstagramSeacoast Podcast is now on InstagramBe a Patron of the podcast We have a YouTube Channel for videos of all episodes since Jan. 2024. We'd love to hear from you.  E-mail Joey HERE. Producer/Editor/host: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: Katelyn Vandiver
