Losing Ourselves In The AI Mirror

The Gentle Rebel Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2026 22:13

What do people who believe they are writing songs when they use Suno AI, YouTuber Hank Green, and Narcissus from Greek mythology all have in common? Quite a lot, it turns out. And they can help us recognise a form of stuckness that’s becoming increasingly common as people’s relationship with generative AI begins to blur the boundary between ourselves and the technologies we use, making it more difficult to know where the human ends and the machine begins. https://youtu.be/zSMwN0wKGlE Getting Stuck in the Digital Image Our relationship with technology and, in particular, large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Suno poses a really interesting existential dilemma. I’ve been fascinated to see how these are often sold as tools to overcome stuckness. While at the same time, they create a whole different form of stuckness when we become attached to them. The demise of Narcissus came through an obsession with his own reflection. Perhaps the price of looking away from his reflection brought its own kind of departure and death. Maybe the image had become more real, perfect, and desirable than the human staring at it. In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, we consider how the reflection of ourselves in the machines we use can bend us out of shape and leave us uncertain of who we are and what we’re capable of. What Does It Mean to Write a Song? Fil Henley, AKA Wings of Pegasus, asked this simple question in a recent video. He analysed an advert from the AI music generation platform Suno, which features producers and songwriters using it to make songs. Fil says, “If you don’t know what the song is going to sound like before you hear it, then you haven’t written the song.” Platforms like Suno act like fruit machines. The output is based more on luck than judgement. What makes them compelling and perhaps even addictive, is that the result is impossible for us to predict. It’s a surprise each time that feels exciting to reveal. And it can turn any old crap into something you might hear on the radio. As we see in the video. More Than a Tool This is what makes these services different from tools. A tool reliably enables us to carry out a task without doing everything and more autonomously. So when the producer says that Suno is showing him stuff he never would have thought about, he is revealing the blurred boundary between us and these machines. It is more than a tool for songwriting. It’s generating the song itself. Suno isn’t like a digital audio workstation (a tool), where a songwriter records, edits, and produces music they have written and performed. It goes further, making many of the creative decisions that normally require time, judgement, and consideration throughout the songwriting process. In other words, the user doesn’t need the skill required to produce the result. Whose Ideas Are They? So if YOU didn’t think of them, whose ideas are they? And if it’s outputting stuff based on something you haven’t thought of, what’s the point in you being there at all? The song is found in the mirror as generative AI reflects back an image of a reality that doesn't exist above the surface. Creative Block as a Rite of Passage In reality, human creativity emerges through the energy generated by those moments of friction, uncertainty, and obstacle. By intervening early with generative AI before we have taken the opportunity to grapple with a block, we deprive ourselves of that bittersweet joy of finding something that comes to life THROUGH US. Instead, a service like Suno short-circuits the block. It presents fully formed solutions that we “never would have thought about”. Perhaps, we would have thought of something much better and more “us” if we had been patient and given ourselves time to grapple with the block. The Allure of The Mirror When you listen to these outputs, there is a professional sheen to them that feels sharp. It sounds just like stuff you hear on the radio. But it sounds like stuff you hear on the radio. There is a sameness to it. An increasingly homogenous stasis. Maybe this technology is attractive precisely because it DOESN’T sound like us. It’s familiar enough for us to to glimpse ourselves. But we look different. It cleans up the parts we might cringe at and be afraid of revealing. Those bits that feel messy, broken, chaotic, and weird. We don’t argue with the machine that makes us sound like something you’d hear on the radio, see on TV, or LinkedIn. Slick, clean, authoritative, clinical, soulless, indistinguishable, unremarkable, dull. Incidentally, this is a good way to identify the best producers, editors, and coaches to work with. They don’t try to make us sound like them or force us to emulate their processes. Instead, they seek to understand and support us. They are able to help us notice, accept, and amplify those parts that we would try to shrink down and hide when left to our own devices. The machine holds a mirror with some perfected image that we believe is us, but is stripped of blemishes, stains, and imperfections. But rather than being the Platonic ideal version of us, it’s more like an aggregate approximation of who everyone else is in the land of mediocre homogeneity. We arrive in this territory when we sand off our edges and lose our spark. The Culture of Narcissism In his 1979 book The Culture of Narcissism, Christopher Lasch offers a fresh way of thinking about the myth of Narcissus. We tend to think that Narcissus died because he fell in love with his own reflection and couldn’t look away, so was unable to do anything other than stare obsessively at himself in the water. Lasch adds another layer, depicting cultural narcissism emerging as the image of the human in the water becomes more important than the human it reflects. Telling Us Apart YouTuber Hank Green recently revealed that he had become over-reliant on ChatGPT after viewers pointed out something in a video that felt off to them. When viewed in context, the clip actually makes more sense than the reactionary commentary suggested. But while he said he didn’t accidentally read something from ChatGPT left in the script, Green didn’t dismiss the criticism. Instead, he agreed, “I think what people have said in this thread about me diluting myself is spot on”. Diluting oneself through the use of technology indicates how a separation between the image and the self can get blurred. This is perhaps why those using Suno to make songs believe they themselves are writing songs. It’s not necessarily a deliberate deception being perpetrated by people pretending to know more than they do or pretending they’ve done things they haven’t. There is a real belief being seeded and nurtured that means people genuinely struggle to distinguish between themselves and the output generated by these technologies. The Gift of Getting Stuck There is a gift in getting stuck along the way during the creative process. It invites us to be resourceful problem solvers. It builds character and reveals more about who we are as we experiment, test, and try things without guaranteed results. Imperfectly. Clumsily. Grappling with creative friction gives opportunities to deepen our confidence and grow our experiences of being okay after failing. These tools are sold to us as ways to avoid that friction. But in so doing, we avoid strengthening the tension wood of creativity altogether, grown in a dance with the rhythm of life’s winds and storms. It Takes a Village (of Humans) In this Sunotopia, depicted through their advert, we see many people gathered in the studio. Yet, the future reality that will come through the success of these platforms appears to be very different. The technology is moving us away from others so we don’t need a producer, an engineer, or other musicians to work with. All we need is Suno because Suno doesn’t get blocked. It will work with whatever crap you feed it. And it will turn any old noise into the kind of song you might hear on the radio. Happiness is Only Real When… Christopher McCandless’s diary concluded that “happiness is only real when shared”. An observation made under tragic circumstances. I think there is a lot of truth in this. I’ve found many times that even the happiest experiences I’ve had on my own feel more complete when they are witnessed through sharing a story with someone else. When we’re feeling the pressure to conform to the schedule of our unrelenting world, we need the courage to give it time. To give OURSELVES and ONE ANOTHER time. Maybe our intuition and imagination will start to show us stuff an LLM never would have thought of… It is rebellious to release ourselves from the pressure to rush and force output for the sake of it. Technologies like Suno and ChatGPT can become an attractive crutch when they are sold as ways to keep going amidst the limitless demands of a productivity-obsessed world. But they gradually erode confidence in our own creative capacity. We would do well to remember, “it is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society”. This is where we become unstuck (in the best possible way).

The fastest way to kill creative flow is to turn art into an identity you have to defend. Nathan sits down with special guest host Michael Gazzo (@Michaelvgazzo), a coach, rebirth breathwork facilitator, master NLP practitioner, and platinum-selling music producer, to talk about what happens when external success still leaves you empty and what it takes to create from a more honest place. We trace Michael's path from childhood music obsession to major-label moments, touring, and high-pressure industry wins and then into the quieter work of rebuilding from the inside. Along the way, we unpack why curiosity and play create the “happy accidents” that make work feel alive, and why creative block often isn't a lack of talent but a nervous system and heart issue. If you've felt stuck in perfectionism, overthinking, or the need to make something that “works,” this conversation offers a different frame: become a better receiver first. We also get practical. We talk breathwork as a tool for regulation and deeper emotional release, how to redirect spiraling thoughts without bypassing your real feelings, and how journaling can become a direct dialogue with the work itself. Finally, we break down intention setting, focusing on a cleaner why, avoiding negative motivators that burn out fast, and serving the art instead of using the art to chase approval. If this resonates, subscribe for more conversations on creativity and the inner life, share this with a friend who's blocked, and leave a review so more artists can find the show.Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast   @tynathanclark   @nathanterborgWatch the Video Episode on Youtube or Spotify,https://www.youtube.com/@JustMakeArtPodcastSend us a message - we would love to hear from you! That's how you can tell it's the one. And you know exactly why you haven't made it.Here's what I want to put forth this week: the interesting question is not what the decision is. You already know that. The interesting question is what the avoidance is costing you because it is costing you, every day, in a currency you probably haven't audited. Either way, something is going to be hard. It's hard to do the uncomfortable thing now, or it's hard to live in the regret later. The difference is that regret only gets expensive once it's too late to spend anything else. The show is named for a George Moore line: “The difficulty in life is the choice.” Not the outcome. What if you were never actually blocked? In this episode of This Is Soul Therapy, I'm making the argument that most creative blocks aren't blocks at all — they're loyalty to rules you never consciously agreed to, but that have been running your creative life for years. We're talking about creative compliance: the invisible rulebook that gets handed to us in childhood, reinforced by schools and mentors and workshops, and then turbo-charged by social media algorithms — until following the rules feels so automatic that we mistake it for who we are as creators.I share something that genuinely embarrassed me when I realized it: after nearly 20 years of photography, I went looking for horizontal images to put on my digital frames — and found almost none. An Instagram rule had quietly rewired the way I saw and captured the world, and I hadn't noticed until the evidence was staring back at me from my own hard drives. That's what compliance does. It's not dramatic. It's just slow and quiet and really good at pretending to be common sense. We Cover:Why creative blocks are almost never the real problem — and what's actually going on insteadHow compliance gets installed in us from childhood and why our nervous system actively prefers itThe way social media platforms, mentors, and creative communities hand us rules disguised as guidanceWhat it looks like when your soul is saying "I know exactly what I want to make — I'm just scared"Three simple prompts to start unraveling your own creative compliance this weekThis episode is for you if you're a creative who keeps putting down the camera, closing the sketchbook, or staring at a blank page — and wondering what's wrong with you. Holly Ringland on Overcoming Creative Fear and Finding Joy as a WriterIn this episode, I sit down with Holly Ringland — bestselling author of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart and The Seven Skins of Esther Wilding — to talk about her first work of nonfiction, The House That Joy Built. If you've ever struggled with creative block, self-doubt, or the fear that you're just not good enough to create, this conversation is for you.Holly spent 20 years disconnected from her writing — not because the desire wasn't there, but because fear silenced her. In The House That Joy Built, she shares her deeply personal toolkit for overcoming the inner critic, reconnecting with your creative self, and finding joy in the creative process — even when life has been hard.We talk about how grief and rage can become unexpected catalysts for creativity, why joy isn't the opposite of pain but can live alongside it, and how returning to your imagination is like coming home to yourself after a long journey.Whether you're a writer, an artist, or anyone who has ever felt cut off from a creative outlet you once loved, Holly's story and insights will resonate deeply.Timestamped Highlights[00:47] — What if you could write about difficult, challenging emotions while still embracing joy? I introduce Holly and the big question at the heart of her work.[02:35] — Holly shares the origin story of The House That Joy Built — how her publisher Catherine Milne sparked the idea over champagne by the sea, and how Holly said yes to writing it in just three months.[09:21] — I tell Holly that The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart has the best opening hook I've ever read — and she shares the remarkable story of how that first line came to her in a moment of grief and rage.[19:25] — Holly talks about what it means to become disconnected from your creativity, and why severing yourself from the thing you love most can be a form of self-protection — and self-harm at the same time.[23:07] — Why The House That Joy Built isn't just for writers — it's for anyone who has ever loved a creative outlet and lost touch with it, and what it means to find your way back.[26:46] — Holly shares a Richard Rohr quote that stopped me in my tracks: "Pain that is not transformed is transmitted" — and what that means for how we handle our own struggles creatively.[29:54] — Holly tells the hilarious and deeply moving She-Ra story — and what a six-year-old girl with a plastic sword and a face mask taught her about facing fear and vulnerability as a creative person.[37:17] — The difference between outer landscape and inner landscape, and why the places we love hold our memories and emotions in ways that mirror our own inner world.[44:21] — The desert oak seed pod: Holly explains why this extraordinary tree — which needs fire to crack open its seeds before they can grow — is one of her most powerful metaphors for the creative journey.[50:45] — What is the house that joy builds? Holly explains the beautiful metaphor at the heart of the book — and why coming home to your creativity is like finding the porch light left on for you by a former version of yourself.[01:01:07] — Where to find Holly online, including her Substack newsletter, and how she invites readers to send her their questions about creativity and vulnerability.Links & ResourcesThe House That Joy Built by Holly RinglandThe Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, The Seven Skins of Esther Wilding, The World Beneath Her Feet by Holly RinglandHolly Ringland on Substack: The Joy RiseHolly Ringland on Instagram: @hollygoeslightlyArt Heals All Wounds Podcast: arthealsallwoundspodcast.comArt Heals All Wounds on SubstackEnjoyed this episode? Send us Fan MailMost of us have been told (or have told ourselves one way or another) that building a successful creative business means picking a lane and staying in it. But what happens when the lane you've built starts to feel more like a cage, and the work that once lit you up becomes just another obligation you can't motivate yourself to do? Christina Orthwein's journey from production potter to sculptor to jewelry maker and back again is a raw and honest look at how the pressure to monetize our work can quietly separate us from the reason we started making in the first place. The real tension isn't whether to niche down or stay flexible, but instead learning to trust that the creative restlessness pulling you toward something new might actually be pointing you somewhere worth going.Love this podcast? You might think you don't know Christophe Szpajdel's work. You almost certainly do. The Emperor logo. The Metallica Mankind clip. The Rihanna lettering that went a hundred feet high at the MTV VMAs. If you've spent any time near heavy music, his hand has been on things you've stared at without knowing his name. This week we sit down with the man known as Lord of the Logos — Belgian-born, Devon-based, currently on shift at the Co-op — to talk about a career that has produced somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 logos, and counting. We get into his early years doodling in school notebooks in Liège, the Art Nouveau obsession that underpins everything, and how a chance encounter on the Tube ended with his work displayed at one of the biggest awards shows on the planet for £500 — a fee he only learned was for Rihanna after he'd already quoted it.We cover the Emperor logo that defined his reputation, the Metallica commission that required him to draw at Heathrow five hours before a flight to Japan, and the Foo Fighters Christmas jumper that was a mutilation of his work, and what he did about it. We also discuss the readability question that divides the scene, the three-month creative block triggered by a South Korean band, his forestry degree and why nature sits at the centre of everything he makes, and the political stance on Ukraine that has cost him ten logos in one go.The question running through all of it: how does someone this prolific stay original?Highlights 00:00 Intro 01:00 Meet Christophe Szpajdel — Lord of the Logos 04:00 Logo Count and the Goal of 20,000 by 2030 06:00 The Process Explained 09:00 The Unsung Logo and Chris's Tattoo 10:00 Background: Belgium, Poland, Ukraine, Devon 11:00 The Co-op Day Job and Why It Works 13:00 Side Projects: Murals and the Polish Calendar 17:00 Musical Influences: Kiss, Motörhead, Celtic Frost 19:00 First Logos and Early Career 21:00 The Emperor Logo 25:00 Chilean Influence: Rick Zuniga 26:00 Nature, Art Nouveau, and the Forestry Degree 28:00 Best Work Comes from Anger or Obsession with Death 29:00 Symmetry, Creative Block, and the Client Problem 33:00 Live: Working Through the Drag Logo 38:00 The Readability Debate 43:00 The Rihanna Story 47:00 Metallica at Heathrow 53:00 The Foo Fighters Bootleg Response 54:00 The Mandy Soundtrack 57:00 AI and Market Saturation 59:00 Ukraine, Politics, and the Russian Flatmate 01:02:00 Losing Ten Logos Over a Political Stance 01:03:00 Black Metal, Church Burnings, and Forbidden Fruit 01:08:00 The Trump/Putin Artwork 01:09:00 The Books: Lord of the Logos, Archaic Modernism, Oracles in Black

What happens when an experienced interior designer hits a creative wall—and nothing is working? In this solo episode, Kimberley Seldon walks through a real-time creative block inside a design project: the false starts, overthinking, “good enough” decisions that aren't good enough, and the creeping doubt that follows. But this isn't about talent or burnout. It's about process. Kimberley breaks down exactly what went wrong—and how skipping foundational steps like reviewing client input, defining direction, and working within constraints led to weeks of stalled progress. More importantly, she shows how returning to those same steps unlocked clarity and momentum. This episode is a practical reset for interior designers who want to move past creative blocks and design with intention, structure, and confidence. What you'll learn in this episode: • Why creative blocks happen to experienced interior designers (and why it's not about talent) • How relying on inspiration instead of process leads to stalled progress • Why “I don't hate it” is a dangerous standard in design decisions • The real cost of skipping foundational steps in your design process • How AI and efficiency tools can accidentally remove critical thinking time • Why revisiting client notes and inspiration is key to moving forward • How constraints (not freedom) lead to stronger design solutions • How to break overwhelming projects into smaller, solvable pieces • Why presenting multiple options reduces pressure and increases clarity • The difference between reactive designing and intentional design leadership If you've ever felt stuck mid-project, this episode will show you how to get unstuck—without waiting for inspiration to return. I share what happened when my body forced me to slow down (in a very real way), and how I've started to finally calm my nervous system instead of living in overwhelm. We also get into:Why high achievers struggle to metabolize stressThe “second arrow of suffering” and how we make things worse than they areHow to stop absorbing other people's energy and emotionsMy new morning routine for regulating my nervous systemPregnancy, ambition, and learning to actually take care of myselfWhat it really looks like to step into a new chapter of your life (for me entrepreneurship and Motherhood) This conversation is honest, grounding, and deeply human. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or like life has been heavier than it needs to be… this one is for you.You can connect with Nahid and learn more about her work: https://www.thehumanmethod.co.uk/ Check out her retreat in Greece: https://www.thehumanmethod.co.uk/thesootheweekinlefkadagreece Check out my Substack: https://substack.com/@laurenlograsso

Have you ever had a moment where everything you thought was “working” suddenly wasn't… and you had to figure out who you were again? In this episode, I'm talking with Emmy Award-winning producer, speaker, and writer Teri Weinberg, former EVP of NBC Entertainment, Founder of Yellow Brick Road Productions, and one of the creative forces behind The Office, Ugly Betty, and The Tudors. But what stayed with me most from this conversation isn't just what Teri has built… it's how many times she's been willing to begin again. We talk about what it really looks like to reinvent yourself at any age, how to advocate for what you're worth, and how to stop holding yourself back in rooms where you know you're meant to be. Teri shares honestly about getting fired, navigating power in Hollywood, and learning to trust herself even when the path in front of her completely changed. We also get into creative leadership, confidence, and why life doesn't actually get smaller as we get older… it expands, if we let it.And one of my favorite parts of this conversation is hearing how she's stepping into a whole new chapter in her sixties through writing, speaking, and mentoring the next generation. If you've been feeling stuck, questioning your timing, or wondering if it's too late to go after what you really want, this one is for you.In this episode, we cover:-How to reinvent yourself at any age-What it takes to stop holding yourself back-Advocating for your worth in high-stakes rooms-Lessons from producing The Office and leading at NBC + the secret behind the show's magic!-Navigating career setbacks and starting over-Why your next chapter can be your most expansive one yet Check it out! Creative block feels like a creativity problem. It isn't. It's a fear problem — and until you understand what's actually happening underneath the stuckness, all the "change your inputs" advice in the world won't move the needle. In this episode, we're breaking down the psychology of overcoming creative blocks through the lens of the Courage Habit framework. Let's explore why avoidance behavior doesn't dissolve creative block — it compounds it — and why the inner critic, as exhausting as it can be, is not the enemy. You'll leave this episode with a clear understanding of what the catalytic moment looks like inside creative stagnation, how experiential avoidance keeps you circling the same block, and four Courage Habit steps you can actually use — not to manufacture inspiration, but to build the evidence that you can create in the presence of doubt. If you've been stuck for longer than feels okay, this episode is for you. The block isn't a wall. It's a door. And courage isn't waiting for the fear to quiet down — it's learning to create while it's still talking.

Have you been sitting on something you know you're meant to share… and still not putting it out? Yeah. Me too. This episode is a real, unfiltered look inside my creative life right now and into my literal diary. I share what I've been thinking about, what I've been struggling with, and the biggest shift that's changing everything for me:Choosing expression over perfection. And impressions. Because the truth is, most of us are not stuck because we are not talented enough. We are stuck because we are overthinking, comparing, waiting for the right moment, or trying to get everything perfect before we begin. In this episode, I share why I'm finally releasing music I've been sitting on for years, when it's coming out,  what my journaling practice is teaching me about creativity and anxiety, and how I'm learning to stop holding myself back and actually follow through on what matters.Learn: -How to stop holding back your creativity and actually share your work -Why choosing expression over perfection can change your creative life -What to do when you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or creatively stuck -How to stop comparing and trust your own creative path -Why you do not need the “perfect moment” to beginIf you've been waiting for a sign to release the thing, start the project, or put yourself out there, this is it.And if this episode resonates, it would mean so much if you shared it, left a rating and review, or sent me a message. I read everything and it really does keep me going. Now go make the thing! I believe in you!
