In a monumental moment in the never-ending pursuit of putting a major dent in Fatty Liver disease, Madrigal Pharmaceuticals announced positive topline results from the pivotal Phase 3 MAESTRO-NASH clinical trial of resmetirom for the treatment of NASH and liver fibrosis. Madrigal's leadership intends to file for resmetirom's accelerated approval with the FDA in the first half of 2023. If approved, the drug may become the first NASH medication introduced to market, depending on the outcome and timing of Intercept Pharmaceuticals' refiling of obeticholic acid.To recognize this special occasion, Surfing the NASH Tsunami hosts its largest ever suite of panelists who react to the enthusiasm, synergy and implications surrounding the news. This conversation is the first in a series which navigates the reactions of eight panelists, including Michael Betel, Scott Friedman, Kris Kowdley, Mazen Noureddin, Rachel Zayas and co-surfers Jörn Schattenberg, Louise Campbell and Roger Green. As each recalls their various reactions to the news, the group addresses several points. Mazen describes his relief that we now have a Phase 3 trial that achieves efficacy and safety goals. Scott follows up with his anticipation of increased enthusiasm and energy for the entire set of stakeholders. Michael, the patient advocate representative among the group, reacts with a question: are we ready? Comments from Kris and Jörn drive one interesting outlook: this is the second positive Phase 3 trial in terms of efficacy. Such results might clear the field for a simpler approval process. Additionally, Jörn notes an approval would be in consideration in the EU where EMA requires both NAS improvement and regression of fibrosis. From the entrepreneur's perspective, Rachel recalls her decision a couple of years ago to pivot her company from hepatocellular carcinoma to NASH as what she calls a “bet on science.” This statement aligns with Roger's persistent belief that this study will open the doors for more investment. Jörn and Mazen discuss some of the specific elements of patient screening and population that demonstrate the power of this study. As the session winds down, Roger shares an interesting observation: while the researchers have begun by talking about patients, in an earlier, separate conversation Donna Cryer began by talking about investors.
We continue our conversation with "The" William A. Adams with a foray into diversity. Differing perspectives that are correctly managed and embraced are a part of high-functioning teams. Diversity is a popular term to use to get good press. However, that is not useful in itself. We must look for diverse experiences and backgrounds and then utilize them to improve the team. This benefit only occurs when we work with the differences rather than force them to conform. Differing Perspectives For A Complete Picture There are countless stories of companies that built a product they thought would take the world by storm only to release it to the sound of crickets. These often come from a team that was in a form of a bubble that kept them from considering the real world outside. When we hire a diverse group and incorporate those differing perspectives, we open ourselves to a larger world of opportunities. We discuss examples in this episode, including the idea of men coming up with a menstrual tracking application. A Little Background William A. Adam is an award-winning D&I innovator, engineering trailblazer, and philanthropist. After rolling out critical XML code globally in many of Microsoft's core products, he was named the first Technical Advisor to the CTO, Kevin Scott. Plenty Of Accolades As co-founder of the LEAP apprenticeship program – named Microsoft's D&I Program of the Year in 2020 – William helped launch the training of more than 26 engineering cohorts worldwide. Today, 98% of LEAP participants work at Microsoft or other high-tech companies. His most recent collaboration is with the leadership of the U.S. Virgin Islands to establish and train a technical talent pool and build critical technology infrastructure. Early in his 30-year career in software engineering, he was one of the first Black entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley and was recently profiled by the Computer History Museum. Through his company, Adamation, William developed mission-critical custom enterprise apps for Steve Jobs' NeXT computers and pioneered a network instant messaging service purchased by the CIA. He's been awarded two patents. Where Is He Now? Today, in addition to his role at Microsoft, William is the philanthropic founder of The EV3NT, a collaborative, community-based hackathon designed to use technology to address critical real-world needs. William is busy as a husband and father of three when he's not tinkering with bits and bytes. He builds kitchen cabinets, knits, and tries to recapture the exhilaration of riding a motorcycle in India. His Web Site: https://www.william-a-adams.com
The spread of infection amongst livestock depends not only on the traits of the pathogen and the livestock themselves but also on the veterinary health behaviours of farmers and how this impacts their implementation of disease control measures. Disease management practices employed by livestock owners can vary, due to differing responses to complex factors such as increased awareness of disease risks, pressure to conform to social expectations and the direct imposition of animal health regulations. Controls that are costly may make it beneficial for individuals to rely on the protection offered by others, though that may be sub-optimal for the population. Therefore, failing to account for socio-behavioural properties may produce a substantial layer of bias in infectious disease models.

Caring for an aging parent or loved one can be a great privilege, giving us the opportunity to give back to our parents. Caregiving also, however, is often challenging, particularly when the view of need is different between the adult-child or caregiver and the parent or loved one. This podcast explores those differences to gain a better understanding of why this happens and offers strategies that make it easier to find common ground where solutions emerge. In this episode, hosts Frances Hall, Founder and Executive Director of ACAPcommunity, Adult Children of Aging Parents, and AJ Kerley – Director of Professional Relations, Pace @ Home in Hickory, NC welcomes Mary Remmes – Eldercare guide, certified life coach, and relationship expertThis episode of The Caregiver Community is made possible by our sponsor, Pace @ Home in Hickory, NC.While providing care for her mother, Frances S. Hall, Founder and Executive Director of ACAPcommunity began ACAP as a monthly educational support program for fellow faculty and staff on a small NC university campus, then transitioned the program into a nationally-unique, community-impact nonprofit model in 2012. With a master's degree in higher education administration and a 30+-year career in higher education and nonprofits, Frances continues to lead the growing organization as it continues to provide information, resources support, and community for adult children and others who care for older loved ones. In Episode 11, Kris, Vanessa, and Sheila discuss the importance of the language we use to describe ourselves and others, and the world we live in. Episode 11: Resources The term Indigenous is a relational term that has a global context that affects the Canadian context (i.e. UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples). We have seen a shift across Canada and organizations to move towards this language. Aboriginal is a term that first appeared in the 1982 Constitution of Canada under Section 35(1) in reference to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Officially called Indians in the Indian Act, the term First Nations refers to the Indigenous peoples of North America located in what is now Canada, and their descendants, who are not Inuit or Métis. “First Nation(s)” is the generally preferred term in place of “Indian.” Métis means a person who self-identifies as Métis, is of historic Métis Nation ancestry, is distinct from other Aboriginal peoples, and is accepted by the Métis Nation. The Inuit are the Aboriginal inhabitants of the North American Arctic. They are united by a common cultural heritage and a common language. For a more detailed explanation of terminology, please visit the International Journal for Indigenous Health. MESSAGE SUMMARY: Steve Jobs was a Billionaire, at his death; and he was the founder of Apple. Jesus is the Christ (Messiah) and, as God, the Creator of the Universe. From his death bed, Steve Jobs wrote his perspective on his life in comparison to his impending death. Earthly death is a fact which we all must face. On the other hand, Jesus gives us his perspective on human death, earthly life, and Eternal Life (John 11: 25– 26): “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.”. In our Weekly Video Sermon (i.e. Easter) message today, Archbishop Beach provides a summary of these two different perspectives on living our earthly lives while always considering that our earthly death is inevitable. However, for those of us that follow Jesus, earthly death is only the predecessor event for our Eternal Life. TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. Last Full Measure. In the final episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, fans were faced with a tragedy: the death of Commander Charles 'Trip' Tucker, a fan-favorite character. However, because the episode took place as a holodeck simulation, there was some leeway to interpret those events differently. Enter authors Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin, who took that idea and ran with it, seeding the hints of Trip's ultimate fate in a novel set during Enterprise's third season. In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson are joined by Warp 5's Brandi Jackola to talk about the Enterprise novel Last Full Measure. We discuss the plot of the novel, the conflict between the 'squids' and 'sharks,' a story of differing perspectives, Archer's ethical issues, Trip's ultimate fate, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings. In the news segment, we talk about the impending end to John Byrne's New Visions series and review the latest Star Trek: Discovery comic, issue #3 of The Light of Kahless. The future of global energy production is shaping up to be one of the most important and complicated issues of our time. From limited traditional fuel sources like oil and coal to newer, cleaner energy like wind, solar and bio-mass, nothing is off the table when it comes to meeting the growing global demand for energy. And while the energy market is increasingly global, the debate over the sustainability of our energy use is rooted in regional geographies, statewide politics and local communities – those affected by discreet projects and those that will be most affected by climate impacts. To shed some light on just how complex and nuanced these energy issues are, we focus on the state of Montana – which shares the largest coal deposits in the U.S. (along with Wyoming), is at the top of ranks in terms of wind generating capacity and is home to one of the largest shale oil deposits in the country. In the third and final episode of our Montana Energy Series, speak with Tom Darin, Western Regional Representative for the American Wind Energy Association – AWEA. Despite Montana's wind generating potential, project developers are wary of building large wind farms where there isn't enough infrastructure and power lines to properly distribute and export clean energy. Darin is working with everyone from policymakers to local farmers to help create a viable wind market that would bring jobs and investments to Montana's economy. In the second episode of this three part series, we speak with Gloria Flora, former U.S. Forest Supervisor and founder and Director of Sustainable Obtainable Solutions, an organization dedicated to the sustainability of public lands. Gloria recently co-authored a report on how Montana can become energy self-reliant through renewable energy, energy efficiency and conservation and is championing something known as 'biochar' as a possible carbon-negative energy source. To learn more about Gloria Flora's work, visit the US Biochar Initiative homepage at www.biochar-us.org. And stay tuned in the next few weeks to hear the final installment in this series, a conversation with regional wind expert Tom Darin on the Montana wind market. For the first episode, we talk with Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer. Now in his second term as Governor, Schweitzer, is keen to kick America’s dependency on foreign countries for our fuel supplies. His keynote speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention highlighted the risks and costs to the American public of relying on foreign countries lead predominantly by dictators to meet U.S. energy demands. According to Schweitzer, Montana’s resources offer a homegrown solution out of this geopolitical trap.
