In this episode of the Sustainable Clinical Medicine Podcast, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Bradley Block, a private practice otolaryngologist who also hosts the “Physician's Guide to Doctoring” podcast. Dr. Block shared some amazing insights on how to engineer better office visits by exploring communication tools. Here are three key takeaways: 1️⃣ Identify the question behind the question: Dr. Block believes this is crucial for a more efficient and better patient experience. He shared that patients may not be aware of their actual question or may not ask it directly. Therefore, asking open-ended questions like “What about this worries you?” can help identify the real question. 2️⃣ Improve communication: Dr. Block emphasized the importance of patients liking and trusting their doctor to successfully treat them. Humor can also improve patient outcomes and make a practice more sustainable. 3️⃣ Personal values: Dr. Block discussed the importance of doctors finding a balance between serving patients and taking care of themselves. Personal values should align with the schedule and doctors should avoid burnout and becoming too selfish. Dear Life Warriors, Dr. Varnado left her traditional career of almost 20 years in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2021 to address the broken healthcare system, which currently puts the most resources in treating symptoms, when it really needs to address the root cause of diseases.  Through her years of practice, she has realized that many know what it takes to be healthy but outside of a support system their efforts rarely yield the desired outcome because their environments often reinforce poor habits.  Her focus now is to help others achieve optimal mental and physical health by focusing on lifestyle based treatment, which she believes, could prevent and manage most ailments. This shift was born from starting her podcast in November 2020, Office Visits with Dr. V, where she not only educates women about their gynecologic health and how their bodies function but also about their overall health and wellness. Dr. Varnado was born and raised North Carolina and has been living out a childhood dream of taking care of women of all ages as an Ob/Gyn. She is a proud graduate of Hampton University and The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. She completed her Ob/Gyn residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, where she learned how to be an excellent surgeon and physician. Being a mother of two, having a marriage of 17 years, a supportive family and a strong relationship with God are keys to her success.Topics:How to leave your dream career for purposeLiving a life of purposeWomen's HealthHow to implement lifestyle changesHow to improve your health through lifestyle changesMommy GuiltCovid mindset shiftMommy guiltChallenges for health professionalsFaith and MedicineSpirituality in the practice of medicine Dr. Varnado is an Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2021 to address the broken healthcare system, which currently puts the most resources in treating symptoms, when it really needs to address the root cause of diseases. Healing Your Whisper Stories By Tapping into Creative Healing with Yolanda Grier  Whisper stories are those experiences that we have but never share with anyone. They might be about a time when we were bullied, assaulted or something that happened in the past that we regret and need to let go of. Your whisper story doesn't have to be publicized or written for publication for you to heal. Just getting it out will reduce its power and impact by helping you to see it differently because it doesn't tell the truth about who you really are. Telling your story in a creative is the way to heal and reframe your narrative, release the burden from your shoulders and move on with your life. If the experience remains inside you, you are not going to live up to your potential because of the pain; hence it's worth investigating what it is and how to get out of it.    Join the conversation with Yolanda Grier, an artist, author, instructor, as she shares her whisper stories, how they impacted her life, and how she overcame them through creative art journaling. Yolanda is a creative healer and the host of The Creative Healing With Yolanda podcast. She creates a space for healing and fun through creativity by combining words, images, and color. It is the first thing people notice about us, and it can make or break a first impression. A healthy smile is a reflection of a healthy life. It is important to keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy to have a great smile. In order to achieve this, it is important to follow a dental health checklist for an ideal smile. The first step would be brushing twice a day with toothpaste. This helps remove plaque that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. The second step would be flossing once or twice a day for about 30 seconds or until the thread goes cleanly through the teeth. It is also necessary to brush after eating any type of food as well as drink plenty of water throughout the day. The last step would be visiting your dentist at least twice every year for an oral exam, cleaning, and x-rays if needed. Learn more with Dr.Julie Phillips in this episode. Get in Touch With Your Values by: Take 30 minutes to 1 hour Go out in nature, get away from your house Jot down your top 5 values for yourself and your family When you get so clear on what your values are, you begin to look at your life through a different lens and reevaluate what really matters.   We all want to live our purpose. My guest, Dr. Varnado (Dr. V), joins me today to talk about the one little secret to help you get there: defining your values and living them. Figure out what your values are and compare them to your life - do they align? If not, Dr. V shares her best tips for creating a healthier work/life balance that focuses on harmony. You can hear more from Dr. V on her podcast, Office Visits with Dr. V.   About Dr. Varnado Dr. Varnado left her traditional career of almost 20 years in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2021 to address the broken healthcare system, which currently puts the most resources into treating symptoms, when it really needs to address the root cause of diseases.  Through her years of practice, she realized that many know what it takes to be healthy, but outside of a support system, their efforts rarely yield the desired outcome because their environments often reinforce poor habits. This shift was born from starting her podcast in November 2020, Office Visits with Dr. V, where she not only educates women about their gynecologic health and how their bodies function but also about their overall health and wellness. Dr. Varnado was born and raised in North Carolina and has been living out a childhood dream of taking care of women of all ages as an Ob/Gyn. Being a mother of two, having a marriage of 17 years, a supportive family, and a strong relationship with God are keys to her success.   Creating Harmony to Prevent Burnout Experiencing burnout is, unfortunately, more common than not. But reaching that point doesn't have to be the end of the world. As my guest today, Dr. Varnado says, that ah-ha moment of realization was the start of change. There is good news! It is actually possible to find that work/life balance. Dr. V says the key is harmony. This is what happens when you create a life that matches up to your values. There is so much importance in determining what your values are and living your life in alignment with them. Dr. V also talks about the importance of asking for help when you need it. We don't need to do it all ourselves. Create those opportunities to help you prevent burnout.   Treating Burnout at a Systemic Level Dr. V talks about how much burnout, and in fact, much of chronic disease, as well, relates to our lifestyle. But these circumstances are not always something that is easily solved ourselves - a lot of change has to come from a systemic level. She emphasizes some of the changes the American medical system needs to make, especially when it comes to ob/GYN services and maternity leave. Finally, we talk about the importance of figuring out the root cause of your burnout and suffering. By finding out what's actually causing it, you can make changes where you actually need to - not just putting a bandaid on the latest fire. I want you to look at your values. Take some time away from your house to reflect and write down your top five values for yourself, your home life work-life, and wherever you're spending the most time. Now compare them to how you're actually living - do they align? Let me know in the comments on the episode page how you're going to make some positive changes in your life to realign to your values.   Quotes: “I've heard that there's not balance, there's harmony. I really see that our life can be full. We can be Mom and work and we can have it all, as they say, but not at the same time. How I got off balance was that I wasn't aligned with my values.” [16:27] “Asking for help is not a problem. If you're burned out and need some help, ask for help and just be clear on what you want and what you need.” [29:36] “Our lifestyles contribute to about 80% of chronic disease. When practitioners can tap into that and empower patients to improve their health in that realm, it's so much more rewarding. A pill doesn't fix everything, it doesn't address the root cause a lot of the time.” [35:16]   In This Episode What happens when you have an ‘ah-ha' moment that you're burned out [11:30] How to find a work/life balance when you have a young family [16:00] The importance of reviewing and honoring your values [18:30] How to create opportunities to prevent burnout [20:00] What changes the American medical system can make to improve the birth and maternity experience [23:00] Why you need to address the root cause of your suffering and burnout [34:00]   Resources Mentioned: Use promo code ‘podcast'' for 10% off your order of Magnesium here Find Dr. Varnado Online Follow Dr. Varnado on Instagram | Facebook   Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative

Consent is all about knowing when to say yes and when to say no. It's a practice that can be applied universally, not just in sexual contexts. However, there are many reasons why consent can be difficult, but one of the most common is that it's not something we are taught at home or school, especially when it comes to intimacy and sexuality. In order to foster a culture of consent, we need to be able to talk openly about these issues. Learning and teaching our children about consent can help us to know what it means and how to apply it in different situations in our life.  Join the conversation with Bobbi Pompey as she shares the concepts around consent and how you can cultivate it as a culture in your everyday life. What Can We Do To Get Rid of Hot Flashes OR Make Them Less Extreme The average age a woman goes through menopause is 51. Many women experience what they consider temperature changes such as getting warm and others as extreme as hot flashes and these can happen at a variety of ages, such as their '30s and even'70s. Before these fluctuations in temperature are labeled as hormonal related due to menopause there are some factors to rule out. One place to begin investigating is how well your thyroid is functioning, then, we look to lifestyle changes and stressors. And, before prescribing medicine we need to determine if there are alternatives such as some lifestyle changes you can implement. Even if you have an estrogen imbalance, there are still things you can do to reduce hot flashes before you even get to prescriptions. Some examples of lifestyle changes is reducing caffeine intake, reduce the amount you smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, and eat spicy and sugary foods.   Links and Resources: https://officevisitswithdrv.com Show Transcript ------------------------------ Thank you for listening, please like and share this episode with a friend! [00:32:41] Let's Look At The Studies [00:35:40] Doctors Looking At The Science Functional Medicine & Why Dr. Shelton Decided to Practice: Functional medicine is a way of thinking, a way of approach that looks not at just a patient's prior diagnosis of disease but their condition based on a set of symptoms. Functional medicine looks beyond that to the cause and looks at trends in their personal history and tries to put the whole story together. So looking at the patient from a more holistic perspective and looking at the systems and mechanisms behind the progression of certain symptoms rather than just the end game, which is the symptom of the condition itself. Dr. Shelton early on in her career, found there to be an overuse of prescriptions, procedures, and surgeries as the answer to treatment without trying to view the patient holistically looking at their health and wellness over time and the lack of education for patients around their ability to heal naturally (not in all cases, of course).   Links and Resources: Dr. Sheltons Website Show Transcript

How do we determine which doctor appointment is most appropriate? None of us genuinely wants to go to the doctor. We go when we have to, hoping the medical professionals will help us feel better quickly. Some of us are good at scheduling regular wellness checkups, but even those appointments aren't ones we look forward to with pleasure. Doctor visits can be stressful for those caring for the chronically ill, especially if diagnosed with a degenerative cognitive disease. I could convince my Mom that we were going someplace fun, but it didn't take long for her to figure out that was a lie. Somehow I communicated "doctor visit," and she was never happy about that fact. As Covid took over the globe in March 2020, in-person appointments became severely limited. The result was a rapid acceptance of telehealth appointments. Sometimes we do get a silver lining from the rain clouds. How Do We Decide? I've personally had two such appointments, one mainly for timing and convenience, the other because that's all my doctor had available. I was thrilled with the first appointment; my problem was resolved, and my schedule was barely impacted. The second one was also not in-person, which slowed down my diagnosis and treatment. (For those who follow me closely on social media, you'll know that I contracted Shingles at the end of June 2021.) How do we determine which type of appointment is better? That's the conversation I have with Roz Jones. Roz is a virtual caregiver coach dedicated to taking a proactive approach to working with caregivers and their loved ones. James Dunne a professional Sports Rehabilitation Therapist in the U.K. started his private practice in 2011. Wanting to stick out in his profession he turned to blogging and social media to provide content and get people through his door. He produced a 30 day challenge for runners as a free product to get them to subscribe. With the 30 day challenge being a huge hit. James felt there was something missing..... the community aspect. The idea of having a community where people can go through the challenge together really struck a chord with James. This is when James decided to start his Facebook Group, Transform You're Running. His group does just that. It is highly engaged and quite a friendly and helpful place to be. If you don't run being in this group can change that. Oh how did James do it??? I had the same question That is why I asked him and recorded the whole conversation. Some of what you will learn in this episode 1) How just having one product can make your group boom 2) How to avoid your group from getting shut down by Facebook 3) How to use your group for engagement but keep the selling to your list 4) How you can collect emails without the members leaving Facebook not using the questionnaire/facebook ads. 5) What you should and should not focus on when creating products for your group Link to his lead ad that James uses in a quite unorthodox way. https://www.facebook.com/kineticrev/posts/1338615276221554 (https://www.facebook.com/kineticrev/posts/1338615276221554) Want to join our new Facebook Group? Using data from a national database the authors analyzed more than 8 million ambulatory health care encounters for adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).  Although OSA affects up to 7% of adults in the United States, only 10% of ambulatory health care visits studied were associated with otolaryngologic care.  This presents an opportunity for increased awareness of OSA and the unique role of otolaryngologists in management.  OSA was significantly associated with commonly encountered comorbid conditions, including obesity, asthma, depression, and hypertension.  Otolaryngologists who diagnose and treat patients with OSA should be aware of increased risk for these background conditions since their presence could impact therapeutic outcomes.  Clinicians in general are likely to see more OSA patients given the rising prevalence of obesity and the aging of the population, since elderly patients are more likely to have the multiple chronic conditions associated with an increased risk for OSA.
