America on the Road

At America on the Road, we often complain about the fact that carmakers are offering fewer and fewer vehicles that are affordable for average Americans. But the new 2024 Buick Envista is an exception that both proves and might change that rule. Co-host Chris Teague road-tested the small SUV in the rigors of a Maine winter and found it to be an appealing vehicle with appealing prices. Yes, you can buy one today for less than $30,000, and that is something. That is difficult to find these days. At the same time, Host Jack Nerad found and road-tested another high-value vehicle that is designed to appeal to the mass market. It shouldn't come as a shock that the 2024 Honda Accord is an excellent all-around buy. It combines a roomy interior with winning on-road performance. Even in the Accord Touring form, which Nerad tested, it delivers tons of goodness for the dollars spent on it. Interestingly, the Touring has some significant differences from other Accords in the lineup. But it does share its fuel-sipping hybrid powertrain with many of its kin. We'll tell you more about in this episode's road test segment. Leading the news this week, a Tesla factory has been the victim of sabotage. We'll give you the details and Elon Musk's interesting reaction coming up. The most recent sales numbers are in from across the industry, and one vehicle type has grabbed all the headlines. It's probably not what you might think. We'll tell you what's hot and what's not coming up. Also in the news, Honda has just unveiled a fascinating new version of its CR-V small SUV. It combines a hydrogen fuel cell with battery-electric power. We have the details. This week, our special guest is Rebecca Lindland, director of insights at Cars Commerce. Rebecca is a longtime industry observer and analyst who knows the car industry inside out. We'll be talking with her about hot topics like affordability and electric cars. We're certain you'll enjoy our conversation with her. We have a lot of show for you this week. All that and more are headed your way on America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

The low-priced car is all but dead. However, taking its place is the low-priced compact crossover. At least, relatively low priced -- the days of the $6,000 brand new car are all but memories. Starting south of $25,000, Buick's Envista takes the spot of Buick's new entry point. Sharing hardware with the similarly new Chevrolet Trax, Buick's latest crossover separates itself from its low-priced stablemate by offering a coupe-ified shape. Leaning more on exterior styling, the Envista borrows some styling elements from the aptly named Wildcat concept car, like the front fascia design. Though, like the Trax, this Envista packs a 1.2-liter turbocharged I3 that sends 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's Patrick Carone hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Buick Envista and puts it through its paces. Carone takes you on a guided tour of the '24 Envista and highlights some of his favorite features. Carone also takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Carone chats with host Wesley Wren about the Buick Envista, what sets it apart from the Trax, and how it handles the daily grind. Carone also talks about how the Envista manages to load a car seat. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the Envista special.

This episode is sponsored by enVista.   The speed with which Microsoft has introduced various Copilot capabilities has challenged even the most dedicated channel professionals to keep up. Updates across Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and beyond have signaled a new era at Microsoft, with the company's product teams all putting AI-based capabilities at the forefront of their planning and messaging.   To get more perspective on how Microsoft's Copilot brand and tools are evolving, we are joined by Nathan Bench and Hillary Schwartzbach of enVista. They have been paying attention to Microsoft's updates, both the new Copilot announcements and the adjustments and rebranding that are still going on. They offer perspective on the AI capabilities that Microsoft customers have responded most favorably to already in work scenarios like code development, meeting management, and sales. We also discuss the close relationship between deploying AI workloads and having a strong base of IT fundamentals in an organization like data management and security policies. And they share some perspective on how champions can bring Microsoft Copilot tools back to their teams and win over skeptical or less educated colleagues to begin putting some of these capabilities to work.   Show Notes: 2:00 - Which copilots customers have shown an early interest in, and why they need guidance in many areas 5:30 - How Sales Copilot has influenced the perception of newer Dynamics 365 Copilot tools 7:15 - How data management and data hygiene are so critical for getting value from AI 11:30 - The challenge of correctly assigned security and access 14:30 - Why access to documents and enterprise content flowing through enterprise systems will be important to Copilot scenarios 17:00 - Recommendations on how champions in an organization should be bringing AI discussions back to their teams today 23:00 - Why understanding user roles or personas will be critical for rolling out the right copilot scenarios in any organization 25:30 - The role that Dynamics ISVs will have in the Copilot story 30:00 - How enVista is starting to prepare their clients 33:15 - Why interest is so high inside organizations already   enVista is a Microsoft Solution Partner with designations in Business Applications, Data & AI (Azure), Digital App & Innovation, and Modern Work. The Corolla Cross is a low-priced, high-value crossover SUV, a vehicle type American consumers just can't seem to get enough of. In little more than a year on the market, it has already become a giant hit. The addition of a hybrid-powered version tops the model line with a model that isn't just efficient — it's engaging. More horsepower and a sport-tuned suspension will do that. The 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid delivers better acceleration than the conventional Corolla Cross, and Toyota emphasizes that added sportiness in the way it decks it out. The Corolla Cross Hybrid is available as an S, SE, or XSE, the brand's sport-oriented grades. In addition to its taut suspension, even the base S features LED headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and smart key access. The SE adds privacy glass, roof rails, paddle shifters, blind spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert. The XSE is the sportiest and most luxurious Corolla Cross Hybrid with 18-inch alloy wheels, premium LED lighting front and rear, leatherette seat coverings, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver's seat. Host Jack Nerad had the chance to drive several Corolla Cross Hybrid variants at a recent driving event in Southern California, and he'll have a full report. Also in the road test segment, guest host Matt DeLorenzo was behind the wheel of the battery-electric Volkswagen ID.4. The ID.4 brings European driving dynamics to the BEV crossover segment, and Matt DeLorenzo, author of How to Buy an Affordable Electric Car, will share his thoughts. In the news, Tesla has cut the prices on some of its models for the sixth time this year. We'll tell you what's behind these unusual price changes and give you our comments coming up later in this segment. Also in the news this week, the other shoe dropped on federal electric-vehicle tax credits, and there are big winners and big losers. A number of well-known brands are crying this week. We'll give you the details plus our commentary on the multi-billion dollar decision a little later. On new-car front, Buick revealed the 2024 Envista, a vehicle it claims, offers the cargo space and utility of an SUV, packaged in the sleek proportions typically found in a sedan. Not only that, but it's darn good-looking. We'll give you the details and our reactions coming up. We have a terrific guest for you this week. Ted West is a veteran auto journalist and author of one of the best motor racing novels ever, a book called Closing Speed. He is also one of the reasons Host Jack Nerad got into the business of reviewing cars in the first place. We will bring you their conversation and much more in this episode of America on the Road.

“Shippers tend to be data rich but information poor. Shippers have access today to more data than at any point in history. Because of the fact that their data sources tend to be disparate, meaning I've got data coming out of a purchase order management system, out of a warehouse management system, out of a transportation management system and then probably downstream in a freight audit payment solution. What that means is that shippers tend to not have a way to pull out actionable insights and turn that data into information. So those disparate data sources mean there's no single source of truth.”
