Picture this - it's Thanksgiving, and in walks THAT family member. The one who has differing political views and ALWAYS wants to talk about them. You want it to go well, but you're afraid it just won't. What do you do? Like it or not, the divisiveness in politics is something that has infiltrated nearly every aspect of our lives. Things feel so divided right now, and that's what we're diving into this week. This week's guest is Peter Montoya, and we're talking about his new book The Second Civil War: A Citizen's Guide to Healing our Fractured Nation. In this episode we talk about the ways in which identity and tribalism play into the divisiveness we are experiencing. We talk about ways to approach political conversations and tips for effectively having the conversation. And finally, we talk about grey rocking, a strategy for handling truly morally reprehensible conversations. Peter Montoya is a thought leader, skilled orator, tech entrepreneur, and successful business strategist, Peter's expertise comes from decades of being deep in the trenches – guiding sales, marketing, service, and development teams to achieve seemingly unreachable goals by working together cohesively. 25-year-old Peter, working at this trade for 8 years now is going to talk about Styrofoam plaster mouldings, coffered ceilings, waffle ceilings, diamond patterns, accent walls and so much more. The reason Peter started his business and has always built to a certain standard, he was disgusted with where the construction industry was going. Peter gets very passionate about million-dollar custom homes with upgrades that have no value because the builders use the cheapest of the cheap material, such as 7” MDF baseboards, that's not right.Peter uses a 12” Makita stone blade on his Milwaukee mitre saw, he has to remove the guard to make the cuts he needs, especially when it's a bigger crown, and he uses the fence the same way you would for wood mouldings. Even if his cut is a little off the special mix of plaster will make that joint perfect, that's his trade secret, his R&D for the construction industry. There is a theory that your crown should be as many inches as your walls are in feet, 9 foot walls, asks for 9” crown, that's incorrect. Crown must be used for the space and the size should complement the space, it's a trial and error with samples. At 23 Peter bought his first house, at 22 he opened his business, he has so many friends that are not doing anything with their lives, they are just riding life out, they are waking up at 1 in the afternoon, without a care in the world. WOW. Peter shares a great tip and product that he uses to install his one step beam and crown pieces for the coffered ceilings, and he continues to share how he installs an entire ceiling design.Peter and I have a straight up conversation on what's really next for all of us in construction, what to expect in the next year or two and why we have the expectations that we share. Peter also shares where he got his drive from, such a great story. There is so much uncertainty these days and that goes for construction, for all the tradespeople, entrepreneurs and building your businesses, do not overextend yourself, build but build your business slowly, careful, there is a bad recession coming and a lot of you tradespeople have not experienced a recession and you really want to be ready for it. It was a blast spending time with today's #PoisedforExit guests, Sam and Peter Blankenship, owners and founders of Wahiwater. When we first met in 2018, I was one of the speakers for an event they attended and afterwards we chatted. We worked together for a while as they assembled their start up team, took a break as they raised capital, and now as guests on my show, I got to catch up and hear about everything that's happened. Being brothers, Peter and Sam knew in their college days that they'd be partners in business. Their strengths magically play off each other and are the epitome of an ideal partnership. Their first swing at business ownership was in the medical industry and they did very well. Eventually, they were acquired, but not without some tough lessons. Fast forward to today, Wahiwater is a delicious water product that comes in 4 flavor essences. Pure water with plant-based ingredients to enhance the health benefits of the product. Sam and Peter have not only assembled a strong network of private investors, but also an internal team of professional advisers and leadership that together have produced some amazing growth. With the ingenuity, grit and attitude of champions, Peter and Sam have accomplished great things. Yet, they're just getting started! Their motto: "The best idea wins, no matter who thought of it". Next on the horizon is sparkling flavored water (nutrition focused), immunity water and effervescent tablets too. There's no doubt this company is one to watch, and when they become acquired (which will surely happen someday) you'll find them starting yet another venture. The lessons and stories they shared in this episode will resonate with any business owner, no matter what stage. To hear about their journey and what's next for Wahiwater, listen here for the full episode. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone interested in learning more about how to lead with purpose, the fourth industrial revolution, and the role of the World Economic Forum. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… how technology can be a force for good, but it's something we all need to be working at and towards. Peter St Onge is on the show with me this week to discuss what exactly is going on with the economy right now. Why are gas and lumber so much more expensive now? Is it inflation? Does it have to do with the supply chain issues of 2020? How stable is the US Dollar? Is it rapidly losing value? What is so special about Bitcoin? Why does it hold value? Can it inflate? Peter Stetina is an American professional cyclist who experienced success both domestically and overseas! He has completed each of the three Grand Tours multiple times, including two Tours de France. He has stood on many podiums across the world. In 2015, he suffered a major crash that destroyed his kneecap, which nearly required an amputation. Peter fought back and incredibly raced again that same calendar year here at the Tour of Utah. In 2019, Peter switched to primarily racing on dirt and gravel, and regained his passion for riding a bicycle. In October of 2020 he completed the fastest known time (FKT) on the iconic White Rim trail in Moab, after coming up just 16 seconds short in his previous attempt just a few days earlier, which is insane and shows how strong the dude is. Peter is a wonderful example of overcoming obstacles, and we were honored and grateful to learn from him!Find Peter at-IG- pstetinaSpecial love to-Clif BarThe Velominati Rules (Rule #1- Obey the rules.)
This stuff is technical but critically important to understanding the possible underlying mechanisms by which excess PUFA may be hurting you. If this is confusing you may want to start with the first episode Peter and I did, all of which are at heartandsoil.co. Petro Dobromylskyj is a veterinarian, trained at the RVC, London University. He was fortunate enough to intercalate a BSc degree in physiology into his veterinary degree. He was even more fortunate to study under Patrick Wall at UCH, who set me on course to become a veterinary anaesthetist, mostly working on acute pain control. That led to the Certificate then Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and enough publications to allow him to enter the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia as a de facto founding member. Anaesthesia teaches you a lot. Basic science is combined with the occasional need to act rapidly. Wrong decisions can reward you with catastrophe in seconds. Thinking is mandatory. He stumbled onto nutrition completely by accident. Once you have been taught to think, it's hard to stop. Peter Bonaker is a social scientist, author of Sacred Shield: Shamanic Protection for the World Today. He’s a teacher and practitioner of Shamanic energy medicine, he lives in Denver Colorado and teaches his methods of shamanic healing and protection throughout the world. Peter experienced an extreme trauma and near-death experience at the age of 16. He worked for 30 years as an educator at all levels in public education, from pre-kindergarten through to the 12th grade. He taught post-graduate students as an adjunct professor at the University of Denver for 10 years and also, oddly enough, worked as a licensed building contractor (still today). Simultaneously during this last period, he began his studies and teaching in the field of shamanic healing. Along the way on the shamanic part of this journey, he became curious about how a certain number of people presented repeatedly, exactly the same definite pattern reflecting the presence of what he came to know and describe as a very dark energetic form. The pattern never deviated and is quite unusual in contrast to the standard teachings in the shamanic field. This dark energetic form knows no boundaries of any kind that can be consistently determined. In the shamanic field, he has had the opportunity to work with individuals throughout the entire world. There appear to be no economic, geographical, ethnic, gender or other types of borders or boundaries that this dark energetic form refused to cross. Any and all individuals appear to be equally available, particularly when they might happen to be especially vulnerable for one reason or another. . In 2008, Peter was invited to become an assistant teacher which led quickly to becoming a senior faculty member of the healing Light Body School and part of the Four Winds faculty. He taught for the next eleven years a Jungian oriented class called Walking with Protection, on through to many of the other master classes, including one he developed referred to Advanced Shamanic Skills. Both his shamanic practice and that class resulted in authoring the book ‘Sacred Shield: Shamanic Protection for the World Today’. Peter Gray, Ph.D., a research professor at Boston College, has conducted and published research in comparative, evolutionary, developmental, and educational psychology. Peter Sage is nothing short of an absolute business genius! At the age of 16 he took his last £20 and doubled it by buying toys and selling them at the local car boot sale at 200% profit. From there Peter has opened, grown and sold multiple 8-figure businesses, all of them grown organically from his own hard work and business acumen. But the crux of this episode is Peter’s recent stint in… prison! This is no ordinary jail story with no ordinary ending. Tune in to totally transform the way you look at life and the bumps we encounter along the way. Teaser: My Guest: Peter Sage Peter Sage is a well-known international & serial entrepreneur with over 25 years experience growing fast-paced enterprises. During this time, he launched, operated and brought to success over two dozen companies, several of which he brought from scratch to over eight figures. A long-standing member of the Global Entrepreneurship Organization, he served as the Chairman of the London Yes Group, the largest personal development organization in Europe. For several years Peter was also a member of the advisory board for the Center for Entrepreneurship at InSead, a global top-five business school, and one of the world leaders in the field of entrepreneurship education, where he is also part of their Entrepreneurs in Residence program. As well, he is the advisor to the Hungarian government on their creative thinking policies. Pivotal Moments: Opened his first business while in school, selling “conkers” (chestnuts), an old children’s game in Britain, from a tree in his backyard. Dropped out of school at age 16 and started working in his Dad’s junk yard. Didn’t get paid enough so left without knowing what he was going to do next. Bought £15 worth of toys from a wholesaler, gave his last £5 to get into the local car boot sale (flea market) and sold the toys for £30. Returned the each week, doubling his money, until he had enough to open a stall in the local street market, which he called Peter the Toy Boy. Read a fitness manual and realized he could write a better one and sell it, so he did, naming his new book The Supreme Physique. Starting a mail order business selling fitness books and adding other products such as protein from manufacturers until he was making £500 a week at the age of 18. In 1994, opened a Casting Agency where he revolutionized the industry by using the then brand new Windows 95 operating system to build a database of 22,000 paying members. Sold the Casting Agency at age 24 for way too little and went into various other businesses. Peter is currently putting together a program to help CEOs who are burnt out, borderline depressed and emotionally unavailable for their spouses and relatives. Quotes: Most business owners get burnt out because they are trying to catch the rabbit of fulfillment, by running on the track of achievement. Nobody has the right to tell you that you can’t do it. If they do, don’t listen. As a business person, everyone else’s opinion of you is none of your business. Most people don’t care enough about you to bother to give an opinion, because they are too busy being worried about what they think you think of them. Get out of the addiction of GOOP – good opinions of other people. Peter joins me to talk about what is real. Peter has been studying consciousness and philosophy, and is also an advocate for the responsible use of psychedelics. Today’s guest is Peter Fader, professor of marketing at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and the co-founder of Zodiak. His expertise centers on the analysis of behavioral data to understand and forecast customer shopping purchasing activities. His insights are reflected in his great book, Customer Centricity. The highlight of the conversation is Peter’s story of his disagreement with Wall Street’s findings on Dish Network’s company valuations. Peter and his team analyzed the company valuations using the public data Dish provided to investors. They came up with company valuations that were within 3-5% difference of the forecasts Wall Street was making. Next, as a fun academic exercise, his students created forecasts for the next 4 quarters using various statistical methods. Peter compared his students’ numbers to Dish’s quarterly numbers and noticed two things: (1) the students were within .5% of the number that Dish announced, and (2) the Wall Street analysts were off by about 10%. You can read Peter’s article, “How Wharton marketing students beat Wall Street analysts at their own game,” on his findings. In this episode: 2:00 – Can marketing can be taught or is it learned? 3:15 - What is the genesis of lifetime value and customer centricity? 4:08 – What happens if companies focus on the customers, not products? 5:38 - How do companies define, uncover, and identify the right customers? 9:00 – Wharton creates a new term, “customer-based corporate valuation” 12:45 – How to look beyond big, glitzy metrics 15:27 – Peter’s disagreement with Wall Street analysts 21:15 – Peter’s stock tip! 25:49 – Getting below the surface of the numbers to find the story 29:49 – The blend between data analytics and intuition 31:10 – What’s Next! for customer lifetime value, customer centricity, and the analytics side of growing business? Where the pair try to decipher what success is and realise they have very different memories of their First. Big. Fight. This is an extended hour-long "2015 in review" special episode where we go wildly off that topic but do deliver on the length. Enjoy. Things mentioned in this episode: Peter's erotica - in particular his stories The Elephant in the Closet, The Kindness of Strangers & Logical Fellatio. Honor Eastly's mailing list - sign-up to stay in the know.Little Bets - a book about how breakthrough ideas emerge from small discoveries Honor Eastly's New Years Anti-Resolutions post and her brother's fantastic response. Peter's board game company, business blog and daily Vine series. Amanda Palmer - not sure how to sum her up. Musician/blogger/community maker who talks really openly about finances and creativity. Her book, The Art of Asking, is fucking great. Austin Kleon - a writer who draws. Just finished his book, Steal Like An Artist. It's disarmingly simple but incredibly powerful. Patreon - subscription crowd-funding for people who make stuff. Find Peter's here. Find Amanda Palmer's here. We also jokingly talked about linking to a Neo-Nazi website as a protest against the proliferation of offensive content creators but I don't actually want to link to shit like that, so I won't. If you want to record an outro to be used in an upcoming episode, record the following and carrier-pigeon it to us (we also use email: beinghonestwithmyex@gmail.com): "Thanks for listening to Being Honest With My Ex. If you've enjoyed the podcast, subscribe to us on iTunes, leave a review and tell your friends. Peter is my favourite son!"
