During his career he was active in the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and in 2013 won the Luke Dober Award for his advocacy efforts on behalf of Substance Abuse Treatment in the region. AS CEO of Executive Service Corps of Cincinnati, he oversaw all operations of this nonprofit organization located in Blue Ash Ohio. In his role as Director of Administration at Transitions, Inc., Schrage oversaw government relations for the 140 employee organization. As Assistant Director of the Northern Kentucky Area Development District he provided administrative and supervisory oversight to operations of the NKADD for 85 employees. Prior to serving as Assistant Director he was Coordinator of the Public Administration and Community and Economic Development Division, performing duties such as providing direct technical assistance to 63 local governments and over 100 special districts in the areas of economic and community development, budgeting, finance, human resources, management, research, risk management, special studies, and solid waste. Schrage coordinated NKADD local government projects, assisted local governments in administration and compliance with numerous state and federal laws, programs, and regulations, coordinated many regional programs and developed innovative programs and services to meet changing local government needs. He oversaw legislative issue of interest to local governments and the Area Development District. Prior to joining NKADD Schrage served as City Administrator of Ludlow, KY and was responsible for day-to-day administration, operation, and management of city government. "My first encounter with Bruce Schulman was, of course, through his book on The Seventies. This would have been in 2003, just a couple of years after September 11th in fact, and I think I first saw the book and was compelled to gaze at its cover on account of its title. I may have bought it at one of those mass market bookstores then in abundance at the time, possibly at a Barnes And No- ble. I bought the book and read it in its entirety in one night, an- nounced to the paper for which I was then writing, Organica (and of which there exist no digitally archived copies whatsoev- er, for all sorts of complicated reasons I won't get into here) that I was determined to find the man behind the box in person and do a story on him. This wasn't difficult to do since I was living about a mile away from where he was teaching then at Boston University. I found him to be an unusually warm and open man, utterly without pretensions, and beautifully, more than once during the interview a student and then a student's parent stopped by to say him and tell him how inspirational his class was. I hope that his book continues to be the major text on the sub- ject of that era for the foreseeable future. People often ask me why I am so interested in 1970s. Part of it is my love for the underrepresented, the orphaned, and the, for lack of a better word, "unloved." I am always drawn to that which society considers undramatic, which of course relates to my love of the quotidian. Now we are discussing perception here not facts. Often something initially thought of as completely irrelevant or a waste of time emerges in hindsight to be the most important thing in the world: one era's costume/period drama is another era's kitchen sink drama". It continues to be the case that the 70s are sandwiched, like a middle child, hell like out entire "generation X" be- tween these other incredibly dramatic and huge in demo- graphic eras. I believe "the 60s" continues to be more popular an unreflective catch phrase far more than "the 70s". I further believe that when you get past the 60s branding as "cool" or "revolutionary" you realize that not everything im- portant happened within its confines. People often say that not everything can be explained by a gen- eration or an era. Of course that is true, but neither is it the case that generations or eras are unimportant. Since I look at the present with the eyes of Chuck Klosterman in his, in my view, master- piece of non-fiction, But What If We're Wrong? Thinking about the present as if it were the past, I see contempo- rary things with some critical distance and this makes me keenly at- tuned to how much of the contemporary is in a highly specific style unique to our age, and not ultimately better nor worse than earlier styles, but still a style all the same. Style is that which you can't ignore and never shuts up. Bruce Schulman is one of those innovative historians who regards popular culture and the arts as central to history, as im- portant if not more decisive than the actions of politicians. gras roots political campaigns or what generally gets counted in the history books. How class division amongst Black America facilitated housing descrimination. We will be joined by professor Preston Smith, II About Dr. Smith: Postwar black politics with an emphasis on housing and class. Inner-city neighborhood revitalization including economic development, affordable housing, quality public education, and equal and adequate delivery of municipal services Preston Smith's research interests in urban studies and postwar black politics are reflected in his many publications and presentations. He has been published in such journals as the Journal of Urban History and edited volumes such as Without Justice For All. He has made presentations at Social Science History Association meeting, Center for the Study of Race, Inequality and Politics, Institute for Social Policy Studies, at Yale University, and The Centennial of W.E.B. DuBois's Souls of Black Folks symposium at Williams College. His most recent book, Racial Democracy and the Black Metropolis: Housing Policy in Postwar Chicago (Univ Of Minnesota Press, 2012) examines housing debates in Chicago that go beyond black and white politics, showing how class and factional conflicts among African Americans actually helped to reproduce stunning segregation along economic lines. Smith's commitment to urban studies led to his becoming Director of the Community-Based Learning (CBL) program at the Weissman Center for Leadership and the Liberal Arts. Smith's Involvement with CBL began with his development of an advanced seminar that utilized CBL pedagogy. In this class students interact with local communities through community-based research and service, allowing them to enhance their understanding of public concerns while fostering leadership and advocacy skills. Smith is part of group who developed a faculty seminar that examines Puerto Rican history and culture in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and on the island. The unique feature of this seminar is that it combines area college faculty and community leaders from Holyoke. It is targeted to faculty and community-based organizations that collaborate on community-university partnerships. Since many of the families living in Holyoke are Puerto Rican, the seminar focuses on educating CBL students on Puerto Rican history and culture. Smith believes that one of the ways to best teach politics is to be politically engaged. He is a member of the Interim National Council of the Labor Party, an independent political party that comes out of the labor movement. The Debs-Jones-Douglass Institute, which is the educational and cultural arm of the Labor Party, sponsors the Free Public Higher Education campaign. Smith is currently the co-chair of the Institute's national campaign, which asserts that higher education is a necessity in today's economy and society and, therefore, should be paid for by the federal government. Modeled after the GI Bill®, the campaign would cost $34 billion if everyone currently enrolled at a public institution were to have free tuition and fees. Peter Sage is nothing short of an absolute business genius! At the age of 16 he took his last £20 and doubled it by buying toys and selling them at the local car boot sale at 200% profit. From there Peter has opened, grown and sold multiple 8-figure businesses, all of them grown organically from his own hard work and business acumen. But the crux of this episode is Peter’s recent stint in… prison! This is no ordinary jail story with no ordinary ending. During this time, he launched, operated and brought to success over two dozen companies, several of which he brought from scratch to over eight figures. A long-standing member of the Global Entrepreneurship Organization, he served as the Chairman of the London Yes Group, the largest personal development organization in Europe. For several years Peter was also a member of the advisory board for the Center for Entrepreneurship at InSead, a global top-five business school, and one of the world leaders in the field of entrepreneurship education, where he is also part of their Entrepreneurs in Residence program. As well, he is the advisor to the Hungarian government on their creative thinking policies.   Pivotal Moments: Opened his first business while in school, selling “conkers” (chestnuts), an old children’s game in Britain, from a tree in his backyard. Dropped out of school at age 16 and started working in his Dad’s junk yard. Didn’t get paid enough so left without knowing what he was going to do next. Bought £15 worth of toys from a wholesaler, gave his last £5 to get into the local car boot sale (flea market) and sold the toys for £30. Returned the each week, doubling his money, until he had enough to open a stall in the local street market, which he called Peter the Toy Boy. Read a fitness manual and realized he could write a better one and sell it, so he did, naming his new book The Supreme Physique. Starting a mail order business selling fitness books and adding other products such as protein from manufacturers until he was making £500 a week at the age of 18. In 1994, opened a Casting Agency where he revolutionized the industry by using the then brand new Windows 95 operating system to build a database of 22,000 paying members. Sold the Casting Agency at age 24 for way too little and went into various other businesses. Peter is currently putting together a program to help CEOs who are burnt out, borderline depressed and emotionally unavailable for their spouses and relatives.   Quotes: Most business owners get burnt out because they are trying to catch the rabbit of fulfillment, by running on the track of achievement. Nobody has the right to tell you that you can’t do it. If they do, don’t listen. As a business person, everyone else’s opinion of you is none of your business. Most people don’t care enough about you to bother to give an opinion, because they are too busy being worried about what they think you think of them.
