Marley shares her inspiring journey of curating and developing a children's art gallery in partnership with the Southwest Art Gallery and Science Center. At just 16 years old, Marley embarked on this project to provide art-related opportunities for kids in her community in North Dakota, where such resources were scarce. She discusses her passion for art as a self-taught artist, the need she identified in her community, and how her collaboration with the Southwest Art Gallery, which shares her mission, facilitated the creation of this new space. Marley reflects on her experience as a volunteer and the process of curating the first exhibit, highlighting the importance of fostering creativity among youth. About Our Guest: My name is Marly Barnett, I am a 17-year-old Girl Scout from Troop 85112 and I live in the SW region of North Dakota. My Gold Award project, titled “SW Art Gallery and Science Center's Children's Gallery”, was to develop a children's art gallery for grades K-12 within the physical building of the SW Art Gallery and Science Center. I started this project at age 16 in April 2024, and as a result, I have advanced from a volunteer position to a paid role as Student Director of the SW Art Gallery and Science Center's Children's Gallery in October. Most recently I added Social Media Coordinator to my responsibilities. The reason I chose this as my Gold Award project was for two reasons, one to play a more active role in my community and two, as a self-taught artist, to make the arts more accessible for young artists in Region 8 of North Dakota.  

Kate Cherry Athena Network Beds & Mid-Herts is an award-winning Regional Director of one of the UK's leading women's networking organisations. After a 15-year career in the financial sector, Kate bought a franchise in the Athena network and has been running groups in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire for nearly a decade. The challenges brought on by COVID-19 grounded airlines, and when the world began to reopen, customer expectations rebounded to pre-COVID levels, while the airline was still rebuilding. Performance scores were not meeting the anticipated standards. The Ipsos team was commissioned to "look under the hood" of the programme at the wealth of data collected, to pinpoint exactly where the business needs to invest to meet and exceed expectations, ensuring the maintenance of their loyal customer base. Our Global data science and analytics team modelled the data to identify the key drivers of the experience and developed a simulator to demonstrate the Return on CX Investment (ROCXI) if changes were implemented. This shifted the research from a retrospective view to a forward-focused, fact-based programme that identified where Experience Design investments were required. Julie Kaur, owner of Jules Convenience Store in Telford, is an inspirational retailer. In this week's episode, you will learn how she has become the centre of her community in Telford for over twenty five years. Despite having three young children, Julie took over the running of the family convenience store. Over the years, she has helped many customers in times of need. Last year, I was a Girl Scout delegate for my service unit.   I am also involved in Student Council, National Honors Society, archery, and robotics. Danielle Casey, President & CEO of the Albuquerque Regional Economic Alliance, joins Dennis and discusses finding your path in economic development. How do you find the right fit? How do you know when to move to the next position? Is working your way up in one organization preferable, or is there value in working for multiple organizations? Is there a tipping point when it makes more sense to stay with an organization? Are there red flags when looking at joining an organization? Are there some dos and don'ts people should be aware of when interviewing? Ms. Casey brings extensive and diverse experience in leadership, public administration, marketing, business development and retention, and strategic planning as the leader of AREA, a nonprofit organization working to create a prosperous and diverse economy for the four-county Albuquerque metro region. She joined the organization in October of 2020. Previously, she served as the Executive Vice President for the Greater Sacramento Economic Council and oversaw the organization's business development, marketing and communications, investor engagement, research, and strategic initiatives critical to advancing economic growth in Greater Sacramento. She oversaw the comprehensive launch and execution of a best-in-class national site selection consultant strategy and established first-ever memorandums of understanding with seven local commercial real estate brokerage offices, receiving a Gold Award from the International Economic Development Council in 2020 for a joint publication she spearheaded with CBRE. She established critical internal efficiencies with revisions to all organizational practices from database management to budget development and oversight. Even in the wake of COVID-19, the organization succeeded in meeting all its annual metrics and job creation goals and launching a regional business retention and expansion outreach program. From 2013 – 2018, Danielle served the well-known City of Scottsdale, Arizona as its Economic Development Director. Under her leadership, the department received six awards of excellence from the International Economic Development Council, status as an Accredited Economic Development Organization, the 2015 ‘Large Community Economic Development Organization of the Year' award from the Arizona Association for Economic Development, and unanimous Council approval of a Five-Year Economic Development Strategic Plan – the first for the community in more than 15 years. During her tenure, the department was directly involved in projects accounting for more than $24 million in 5-year direct revenue impact to the city, $7 billion in 5-year total economic impact, 4,428 or more new jobs in the first 12 months of business operation alone and $160 million in new capital investment. Ms. Casey served in various executive roles at the City of Maricopa, Ariz. since 2005, lastly as the Assistant City Manager. Departments under her oversight included economic development, community and development services, capital improvement, public works and City-wide marketing and communications activities. She managed several noteworthy tasks in the establishment of the City's economic development office, such as the creation of an Industrial Development Authority, the City's first Redevelopment District and Area Plan, the establishment of a local economic development 501 (c) 3 (the Maricopa Economic Development Alliance), City-wide branding and Economic Development Strategic Plan. Prior to her time in Maricopa, she attained significant experience in the non-profit sector working in fundraising, marketing, and event and membership management at the Heard Museum of Native Cultures and Art in Phoenix, Arizona and at Save The Bay in Providence, Rhode Island. Ms. Casey received her bachelor's degree from Arizona State University and Master of Administration from Northern Arizona University. She is both a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) as well as a certified Economic Development Finance Professional (EDFP). She is a member of the International Economic Development Council and serves on its Board of Directors Governance Committee. She also serves as an instructor at the Oklahoma University Economic Development Institute and serves on its Board of Directors and as a Mentor. Danielle is a proud Past President of the Arizona Association for Economic Development, a statewide professional association with more than 480 public and private members, and an active board member with New Mexico IDEA. In May 2010, Ms. Casey was the honored recipient of the ‘Economic Developer of the Year – Small Community' award from the Arizona Association for Economic Development and in January 2017 she was recognized as a national top ‘40 under 40 Rising Star' in economic development by Development Counsellors International. In addition, she is co-founder of the Arizona Chapter of Women Leading Government which in its sixth year draws more than 400 participants. An Air Force brat, Ms. Casey has had the great privilege of living in Texas, Ohio, Alabama, Louisiana, Utah, Rhode Island, Arizona and California throughout her life and is thrilled to now call Albuquerque home, along with her trusty English bulldog Sophie, heeler/cattle dog mix Persie, and her amazing and supportive husband Steve.

She began by founding her school's first neurodiversity affinity group, creating a safe space for neurodivergent youth. Piya shared her journey of developing workshops and assemblies for both her peers and teachers, emphasizing the importance of updated training on neurodiversity. With the support of her school's learning support team and feedback from neurodivergent students, she was able to create impactful presentations and a toolkit to help others start similar initiatives across the country. We discussed the challenges she faced, particularly in implementing neurodiversity training at her school, and how she overcame them through persistence and collaboration with school administration. Piya also reflected on the rewarding moments of her project, especially the positive feedback from students who felt represented and heard. In addition to her work with Girl Scouts, Piya is involved in the Miss America organization, where she continues her advocacy for neurodiversity. She highlighted how her experiences in both organizations have empowered her and provided her with unique opportunities to make a difference in her community. Aug 7, 2024On this episode of the Bill Alexander Show, Bill talks with Geri Jewell. Geri is best known as Cousin Geri on the NBC sitcom, The Facts of Life. She was the first person with a disability to have a regular role on a prime-time series. She began her career doing stand-up comedy at the Comedy Store in 1978. In 1980 she performed at the 2nd Annual Media Access Awards, where she was introduced to Norman Lear by producer, Fern Field. After her groundbreaking role on Facts she has appeared on such shows as The Great Space Coaster, the Emmy award-winning movie Two of a Kind, Sesame Street, 21 Jump Street, The Young and the Restless, Strong Medicine, and the HBO hit series, Deadwood, which she also received Emmy consideration for. She also co-starred in the independent film "Night of the White Pants" and was featured on the FOX series, Alcatraz. When Geri is not working in television, she is a highly sought after motivational speaker and trainer in the areas of diversity, disability, and GLBT issues. Her training has taken her to such companies as Hewlett Packard, Master Foods, Johnson Wax, AT&T, Amgen, Mass Mutual, and Raytheon. She has also trained such government agencies as The C.I.A., The U.S. Treasury Department, Defense Intelligence Agency, and the U.S. Army. She is famous for her uncanny ability to captivate the hearts of her audiences by using humor to facilitate attitudinal change. Geri brings to her presentations her personal experiences in life, which in turn allow people to gain insight into the prospect of seeing disability in a totally different light, creating hope where there is none, and joy where there is pain. She has never forgotten her roots in comedy. She has appeared on many of cable comedy shows, including Evening at the Improv on A&E, and Stand Up Spotlight on VHI. She has opened for Paul Anka, Robert Goulet, and Judy Collins. She has been featured on Entertainment Tonight, E! Hollywood True Story, and ABCs 20/20, and A&E's Biography. All in all, Geri enjoys a thriving career. She has been the recipient of many awards, including the 1992 Founders Award, the 2005 Independent Living Legacy Award, and the 2006 Victory Award. She also made personalized booklets for each senior interviewed, ensuring they had a tangible copy of their story. Mikenna's journey began with her long-standing visits to a local nursing home, where she built meaningful relationships with the residents. Her project expanded beyond her initial nursing home to include another facility, capturing a diverse range of stories from a Holocaust survivor to a World War II veteran. Choosing podcasting as her medium, Mikenna found it to be a more comfortable and accessible format for the seniors, many of whom were hesitant about being on video. She emphasized the power of hearing someone's real voice and the deep connection it fosters. Throughout the project, Mikenna faced challenges such as understanding the technical aspects of podcasting and navigating legalities like consent forms. She also had to refine her Gold Award proposal multiple times to meet the requirements, learning valuable lessons about planning and execution. One of the most impactful stories she shared was about a Holocaust survivor, whose son helped recount her incredible acts of bravery and kindness. This experience, along with connecting with a young author who also worked with Holocaust survivors, highlighted the intergenerational impact of her project. Mikenna's dedication to her project didn't end with earning her Gold Award. She continues to interview seniors and has even developed an app concept to further her mission. Her story is a testament to the profound difference one can make through passion and perseverance. More About Mikenna: Mikenna has been involved in Girl Scouts for 13 years, where she has enjoyed working with her troop and mentoring younger troops by sharing the knowledge she has gained as a Girl Scout. For her Gold Award, she created a podcast series to interview seniors, giving them a platform to share their stories and ensuring they are remembered. Beyond visiting the nursing home that inspired her project, Mikenna enjoys singing, learning sign language, reading, writing stories, and volunteering. Looking ahead, she plans to continue supporting Girl Scouts, likely as a troop leader, while helping others in college and beyond. Break 1: KIA MOG   STORY 1: Man accused of killing pregnant ex-girlfriend released on bond Jesus Monroy, a 20-year-old Snellville man, was released on $56,000 bond after being charged with the murder of his pregnant 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, Mia Campos, and her unborn child. Superior Court Judge Karen Beyers set the bond, which led to Monroy's release early Thursday. He faces charges including malice murder, feticide, and aggravated assault related to Campos' death on July 14. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson expressed disappointment with the bond decision, citing the severity of the crime and the loss of both mother and child. Monroy's defense argued for bond, citing his lack of prior convictions and offering conditions like house arrest and GPS monitoring. STORY 2:  Gwinnett Sheriff Makes 47 Arrests in Surenos Gang Investigation The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office announced 47 arrests connected to the Surenos gang after a nine-month investigation. The probe, which involved surveillance, undercover operations, and collaboration with various agencies, revealed the gang's ties to Mexican drug cartels and their activities in firearm and narcotics trafficking. Authorities seized over $300,000 in cash, 14 firearms, nearly 200 kilos of methamphetamine, 37 kilos of cocaine, and 300 fentanyl pills. Charges include narcotics trafficking, illegal firearm possession, and racketeering. The investigation involved numerous partner agencies and underscores the ongoing effort to combat violent drug trafficking in the community. STORY 3:  Lawrenceville Teen Earns Girl Scout Gold Award By Helping Pediatric Patients Sarah Gruber, a Lawrenceville Girl Scout, used her Girl Scout Gold Award project to aid hospitalized children by donating 17 handmade IV lily pads to Spence and Becky Wilson Baptist Children's Hospital in Memphis. These lily pads, which she designed and crafted over 500 hours, help pediatric patients move more easily with their IVs. Gruber also created 525 coloring kits for the children. Her project not only supports the hospital but also teaches other teens to replicate the effort in their communities. The Gold Award honors Scouts who create impactful, sustainable projects, and Gruber's work will enhance the hospital experience for young patients. In Atlanta, Heinicke was set to be the third-string quarterback after Kirk Cousins and rookie Michael Penix Jr. Heinicke, 31, had a 1-3 record as a starter with Atlanta in 2023 and has an overall record of 13-15-1 with 6,635 passing yards and 39 touchdowns in his NFL career. The "Dog Days of Summer" event at Fins Up Water Park will feature a $1,500 donation from Margaritaville and a portion of souvenir cup sales benefiting LifeLine. STORY 7:  Six presidential candidates on Georgia ballot Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has finalized the list of six presidential candidates for the state's Nov. 5 ballot. In addition to Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, voters can choose from independent Cornel West, Green Party's Jill Stein, Libertarian Chase Oliver, and Socialist Claudia De la Cruz. Robert F.
