"If you discard an item that a compulsive hoarder is attached to - it could be an empty box, a tin, or something like that. If you throw that particular item that they are attached to away, the grief that a compulsive hoarder will experience is the same amount of grief that one would experience with the loss of a loved one. The same intensity of grieve and mourning will be displayed as if you have lost a real person."   Episode Description: We begin our conversation by outlining the differences between collecting, clutter, and hoarding. Stelios describes the hoarder's fortress of material items that parallels their emotional defenses that keep them from experiencing internal vulnerability and loss. He sees the goal of treatment as helping individuals transform from an intolerable to a tolerable interplay with the world and with others. We review the subject of behavioral cleaning of their homes which if not done sensitively can overwhelm the hoarder. He has found that it must be done in conjunction with psychotherapy if it is to aid the person's capacity to mourn. We close with his describing his difficult personal journey and how powerful psychotherapy has been in his life.   Our Guest: Stelios Kiosses is a psychotherapist and supervisor in private practice. He studied psychodynamic counseling and clinical supervision at the University of Oxford and was previously trained in psychotherapy and experimental psychology at Sussex University. Stelios currently teaches at Harvard University Extension School. In his public role, he has acted as a UK TV psychologist and presenter for Channel 4's hit series The Hoarder Next Door narrated by Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman and currently is patron of the Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts one of HRH Prince of Wales core charities. About the Book: Red Crew: Fighting the War on Drugs with Reagan's Coast Guard is a first-hand account of U.S. Coast Guard anti-smuggling operations during the early years of the nation's maritime war on drugs. Jim Howe describes his experience as the executive officer of a specialized drug-hunting crew that sailed in then-state-of-the-art "surface effect ships," a small flotilla of high-speed vessels pressed into the drug war on short notice. In the early 1980s, South Florida and the Caribbean were awash in illicit drugs, with hundreds of smuggling organizations bringing huge loads of marijuana, and later cocaine, into the United States. To fight this epidemic, the Reagan administration led a massive effort to disrupt shore-side gangs while bolstering interdiction activity at sea. To increase the number of days at sea for each surface effect ship, a "multi-crewing" concept was employed, with four teams of sixteen sailors—the Red, Blue, Green, and Gold Crews—rotating among three hulls. Through its first-person narrative, Red Crew offers a rare glimpse into the day-to-day pressures, challenges, failures, and successes of Coast Guard cuttermen as they carried out complex and dangerous missions. Red Crew provides a unique historical view of the early days in the Coast Guard's war on drugs, and is the only book-length history of the diminutive, one-of-a-kind surface effect ship fleet. About the Author: Jim Howe served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Coast Guard for 27 years, rising to the rank of Captain (O-6). He was stationed aboard cutters for a total of 11 years, with five years in command. During his time at sea he gained extensive experience in maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, and national security missions. His recent book, Red Crew: Fighting the War on Drugs with Reagan's Coast Guard (Naval Institute Press) describes his first-hand experiences chasing smugglers and saving lives in the waters off South Florida aboard a one-of-a-kind flotilla of high-speed patrol boats. After retiring from active duty, Howe served for two years as the senior career civil servant in the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Legislative Affairs. He now works in the nuclear fuel industry. From 2003 to 2005, Howe served in the Office of the Vice President of the United States as Special Advisor for Homeland Security, focusing on border and transportation security issues. During that time he interacted daily with the law enforcement professionals at a number of federal agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Secret Service, and he made several fact-finding visits to America's northern and southern borders. He is a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Government. Howe earned a Master of Liberal Arts degree in Government from Harvard University (Extension School); there, his master's thesis examined maritime drug interdiction operations in the Caribbean. He is a graduate of the Marine Corps War College, earning a Master of Strategic Studies degree, and in 2014 he earned a Master of Science degree in Space Studies from American Military University. He also is a graduate of the MIT Seminar XXI program and currently is conducting post-graduate research at the University of Leicester. Howe has written on national and border security topics and is an award-winning author.

The combined result of applied strategic management principles, his consistent focus on positive leadership, and implementing a generous employee bonus program was a 75% increase in profit dollars for his first year as owner, 2017.  The journey for Dr. Ryff and his team was not without some turbulence however.  Kevin McCollister is a Los Angeles based photographer who has been sharing images on his blog East of West LA since 2006. In his blog and his book by the same title, he explores parts of the city of Angeles not frequently explored in film and television. His photographs of Los Angeles, reveal the mash-up up the past and the present with images that often reflect how buildings and spaces have been continually adapted with each generation of Angelenos, particularly immigrants. His night photographs reveal a Los Angeles which seems virtually abandoned upon nightfall, but which still reveal glimpses of the people and the communities that work and exist there during daylight hours. Born in Ohio, McCollister worked as a deckhand on the Mississippi River for several years after which he lived in Cambridge, MA where he attended Harvard University Extension School.  He has lived in Los Angeles longer than he has lived in any other city.  http://jimsonweed.blogspot.com/ http://www.manuelalvarezbravo.org/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lola_Alvarez_Bravo http://www.modotti.com/ www.thecandidframe.com info@thecandidframe.com

In this installment of Faculty Insight, produced in partnership with Harvard University Extension School, ThoughtCast speaks with the esteemed Harvard classicist Gregory Nagy about one of the earliest and greatest legends of all time: Homer's epic story of the siege of Troy, called “The Iliad.” It's a story of god-like heroes and blood-soaked battles; honor, pride, shame and defeat. In this interview, we dissect a key scene in “The Iliad,” where Hector and Achilles are about to meet in battle. Athena is also on hand, and she plays a crucial if underhanded role, with the grudging approval of her father, Zeus. And Nagy is the perfect guide to this classic tale. He's the director of Harvard's Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington DC, as well as the Francis Jones Professor of Classical Greek Literature and Professor of Comparative Literature at Harvard. We spoke in his office at Widener Library. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
