Emotional health is deeply intertwined in an ongoing journey with spiritual health. This involves opening to our pain, grieving our trauma, and patiently cultivating a resilience that stabilizes and secures our relationships and our sense of self. With compassion, pastoral presence, and emotional attunement, psychologist Dr. David Wang is using psychological and theological tools to help us understand and adapt to emotional realities, explore the wounds of our past, and find healing and strength through acceptance and grief. In this conversation with David Wang, we discuss:The difference between human development and spiritual formation and how to understand maturityThe centrality of relationships in human life and growth, and how that's grounded in divine relationality and our communion with GodHow to become friends with ourselves, offering self-compassion and being moved by our own sufferingThe impact of childhood trauma on adult emotional, psychological, and spiritual healthAnd finally, how a practice of grief can help us understand and work through traumatic experiences and move toward healing.Show NotesChristian theology and formationA philosophical approach to theologically informed strategies for transformation and growthHow the relational aspects of God ground an approach to therapy and spiritual formationWhat are the markers of maturity?Relatedness and connection to others facilitates the process of human growth and developmentEmotional building blocks and relational capacities for maturityDave Wang on spiritual health and thrivingTheological and psychological frameworks of thrivingHolding the beautiful beside the brokenBecoming friends with ourselvesShow compassion, be moved by our own suffering, and accept limitations as we strive toward the hard work we're all called to.Two paradoxical needs to achieve spiritual maturity and healthWe are made for relationships, but we also need independenceBalanceSpiritual and emotional maturityFormation through practice, education, and healthy developmentCan virtue be taught? Can maturity be educated? Can we learn to thrive and be spiritually healthy? In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, Dr. Gabor Maté writes that “The attempt to escape from pain is what creates more pain.”When our brains and our bodies go into survival modeAvoidance as a coping mechanism or strategyChildhood trauma in childhood“When the psychic pain is so unbearable, the felt threat so intimidating, we mentally and emotionally try to escape.”Childhood trauma can reemerge in adult behaviors, relationships, habits, language, even physical illness or conditions.Do I have trauma that I haven't dealt with? The symptoms or signs of traumaHow to approach the process of seeking help and healing.Concrete practices that can help and heal traumatic experienceLearning to grieveChristian spiritual practices of prayerThe emotional practice of grief and acceptanceDr. Pam King's Key TakeawaysHuman beings need both relationships and independence. And learning how to balance and integrate them is a marker of our maturity.Though we may try to escape from pain, to deal with trauma we need to practice acceptance and grief. It's a difficult and complex relational process that brings us closer to healing and wholeness. We can befriend ourselves in our pain through a practice of self-compassion.In this life, we have to hold beauty beside brokenness. Cultivating the capacity to do so is the hard work of growth into spiritual and emotional maturity, and the joyful journey of thriving.www.drdavidcwang.comhttps://www.seminaryformationproject.com/About David WangDr. David Wang is a licensed psychologist and Associate Professor of Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary, where he's also the Cliff and Joyce Penner Chair for the Formation of Emotionally Healthy Leaders and scholar in residence at Fuller's Center for Spiritual Formation. BEST OF TST: Halloween (and thanksgiving) is celebrated around the world in a variety of forms, often in ways westerners, and particularly Americans, would find confusing or out of place. Setsubun in Japan is a spring cleaning festival which helps to cleanse the home of evil spirits, something which, from an American perspective, would incorporate elements of both Imbolc, spring cleaning, and Halloween. Dia de los Muertos in Mexico, Correfoc in Catalonia, Basler Fasnacht in Switzerland, Gai Jatra in Nepal, Matariki in New Zealand,  Fet Gede in Haiti, Awuru Odo in Nigeria, as well as Hungry Ghost in southeast Asia, are all examples of man's attempt to bring in good fortune while purifying himself of evil in the form of ignorance, darkness, cold, and the like.-FREE ARCHIVE (w. ads)SUBSCRIPTION ARCHIVEX / TWITTER FACEBOOKWEBSITEPAYPALCashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.

In this powerful solo episode, Leila Lutz delves deep into the importance of understanding your personal "food story" - the beliefs, patterns, and experiences that have shaped your relationship with food. Drawing from her own transformative journey, Leila shares how her lifelong struggle with under-eating and high-achieving behaviour stemmed from a complex web of family dynamics, trauma, and the need to create safety and security.Leila candidly explores how her background as the eldest daughter in a chaotic, financially-strained household influenced her tendency to push food aside in pursuit of constant achievement. She unpacks the addictive nature of adrenaline and cortisol, and how this "busy" mindset kept her from truly nourishing herself. With raw vulnerability, Leila also reveals the generational trauma and beliefs around food that were passed down from her mother's own difficult upbringing. This powerful insight underscores Leila's unique approach to coaching, which emphasizes the critical role of self-parenting and taking responsibility for one's own healing.Throughout the episode, Leila offers listeners a glimpse into her personal process of uncovering and addressing these deep-seated patterns, highlighting the importance of consistent self-care, mindful eating, and creating a life of balance and connection. Chapter 1 What's In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts by M.D. Mate, Gabor"In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction" by Dr. Gabor Maté is a profound exploration of addiction, examining the complex interplay between psychological, social, and biological factors that contribute to this condition. Dr. Maté draws from his experiences working with drug addicts in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, as well as his background in psychology and neuroscience. The book introduces the concept of 'hungry ghosts' as a metaphor for individuals struggling with addiction—living in a state of craving for something they can never satisfy. Dr. Maté emphasizes that addiction is not just a personal failing but a response to trauma, environmental influences, and an unmet desire for connection. Through personal stories and scientific insights, he advocates for a compassionate, understanding approach to treatment that addresses the root causes of addiction rather than merely focusing on abstinence. The book serves as both a poignant commentary on the failures of traditional treatment methods and a call to adopt more humane, integrative strategies in addressing addiction.Chapter 2 In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts by M.D. Mate, Gabor SummarySummary of "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts" by Dr. Gabor MatéIn "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction," Dr. Gabor Maté, a physician specializing in addiction, mental health, and trauma, explores the complex realities of addiction through a compassionate lens. Drawing from both his clinical experience in treating drug addicts in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside and personal anecdotes, Maté delves into the psychological, social, and neurological underpinnings of addiction. Key Themes:Addiction as a Response to Pain: Maté argues that addiction is not merely a biological or moral failing but a response to deep emotional pain and trauma. He emphasizes that understanding the context of an individual's life is essential to comprehend their addiction. The Role of Childhood Trauma: The author highlights how early life experiences, particularly adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), significantly shape an individual's susceptibility to addiction. He illustrates how trauma can lead to patterns of behavior aimed at self-soothing or escape. The Neuroscience of Addiction: Maté explains the brain's role in addiction, discussing how substances modify brain functioning and the reward system. He stresses that addiction is a disease of the brain that can also be understood through a biopsychosocial perspective.Compassionate Approach: The book advocates for a compassionate approach to treatment, emphasizing empathy and understanding over criminalization and stigma. Maté calls for a shift in public policy regarding addiction, favoring treatment and social support over punishment.Connection and Belonging: Central to recovery from addiction, according to Maté, is the need for authentic connection and a sense of belonging. He argues that supportive relationships can be crucial for healing from trauma and addiction. Conclusion:Dr. Gabor Maté's "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts" is not only a profound exploration of addiction but also a call for empathy and understanding towards those who suffer from it. By sharing stories of individuals entrenched in addiction, the book humanizes these experiences and urges readers to reconsider societal views on addiction, focusing on the underlying causes rather than the symptoms alone.Chapter 3 In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts AuthorGabor Maté is a Canadian physician, author, and speaker known for his work on addiction, stress, and child development. In this episode I'm joined again by Maeg Keane to talk about the 11th house — Maeg is an astrologer who I really admire, I find them deeply inventive. Astrology is, or it can be, very animistic - where the planets, signs, and all of their correspondences - plants, myths, stones, etc - are alive and sentient and we can talk with them. Maeg, I feel, is continually having unique and inspired conversations with *the beings* and then bringing something scintillating back to instagram or substack or 1:1 readings, coming from a foundation of technical skill in astrology but always with these added dimensions of magic and connection from their own process. The 11th house is about ideals, hopes, dreams, and wishes, social networks, friends - to start. It was known in ancient astrology as the house of “good spirit”. In Evolutionary Astrology, the 11th house includes these associations with networks, friends, community, but also relates to trauma or trauma signatures. In our conversation here we unpack the 11th house and especially explore how it corresponds with 5th house topics like creativity, play, and romance, but in a more diffused or decentralized way.We spoke last on this podcast about the opposite house, the 5th house, a few years ago — and it was up there as a beloved episode on this podcast.
