"Maybe It's Just Me" The indie rock outfit Lost Leaders were formed in 2011 by pals Byron Isaacs and Peter Cole. Isaacs' resume was already pretty full at the time, thanks to his work as the bassist for the Lumineers and playing with the Levon Helm Band and Ollabelle. If that doesn't sound busy enough, Isaacs has also recorded and performed with Bruce Springsteen, Roseanne Cash, Jackson Browne, Amy Helm, and Joan Baez. As for singer/guitarist Cole, his CV was pretty full as well, thanks to his tenure in Lava Baby, long-serving the New York jazz scene and working as a professional audio engineer. Cole and Isaacs have been pals since the late '90s, playing in bands like Slink and Lowdowners in Stereom, but Lost Leaders is where the two musicians really hit their artistic stride. With a handful of winning albums under their belts like Hungry Ghosts, Promises Promises and their self-titled debut album, Lost Leaders' work is redolent with harmonic dexterity, melodic muscle and rootsy bliss. Their latest effort is producing the full soundtrack and composing the original score for the indie film RUN, which stars Sarah Levy, Adam Palley and Chris Redd. And it was this emptiness I was particularly eager to discuss when I sat down recently with Edward and Rowan, across two separate conversations. Rowan is the creator of the TV show Tin Star, and the writer of films like 28 Weeks Later and Before I Go To Sleep, which he also directed. He's also, as tells me in this conversation, a recovering alcoholic, sober for many years. Edward, meanwhile – well, if you've followed the Oscars and indeed this show over the last few years, Edward needs little introduction. Festivals of light are universal throughout all of human history and culture, no matter how distinct or separate the latter might be. The Hindu Diwali literally means “row of lights,” just like the lighted pumpkins, and rows of Christmas lights, not to mention the traditions of Hanukkah, Day of the Dead, or the Hungry Ghost. Lights have traditionally been used to support the sun and its warmth, at the very least to preserve it in the end-times of the year. They are also used to assist our daily activities as much as they are used to help guide the dead, spirits and ghosts searching for rest. If unable to find the other side these spirits can become trapped. Is it possible with the universal abandonment of the old ways, and the degrading of them by major institutional religions, that there is a clogged purgatory of spirits trapped in agony? Could this at all contribute to the pain and suffering in our ow world? Haunted by the legacy of his superstar father and by an old family curse, Brandon Lee tried to outrun the past. But the past came after him all the same. It was said that his father, Bruce Lee, was taken by that family curse at just 32 years old, and that it then followed Brandon to the set of The Crow, a cross between a superhero blockbuster and a brooding art film that was all goth. The shoot was plagued by injury, electrocution, storms, fires, and car crashes – and culminated in tragedy when a prop gun fired a real bullet. Many different cultures from China and Southeast Asia honor the dead on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month during the Hungry Ghost Festival, also known as Zhongyuan in Daoism and Yulanpen or Ullambana in Mahayana Buddhism. In this episode, we'll trace the origins of ancestor worship to ancient Shang Dynasty Oracle Bones, or “Dragon Bones,” which were used to inscribe petitions to ancestral spirits and hold the earliest evidence of Chinese writing. Then we'll explore how regional variations of those ancient beliefs blended with the Buddhist Ulambana Sutra (or Mulian Rescues His Mother from Hell), Daoist visions of the afterlife, and Confucian teachings on filial responsibility.
