I discuss the importance of a physical warm-up for your body and face, and how to breathe for performance. Why playing games builds trust and positivity and why fully owning your ‘back story' helps you to speak confidently. Getting all your thoughts out on paper, organising them, and practicing out loud with someone are crucial steps. Preparation helps to internalise the content, making it easier to present with confidence and fluidity. The Power of Storytelling: - Incorporating stories into your public speaking can make your message more memorable and engaging. Personal stories are particularly effective because they are easier for the speaker to remember and help build a connection with the audience. The essence is to tell stories that resonate with the audience, not just boast about personal achievements.Shifting Mindset from Fear to Excitement: - Jackie explains that anxiety and excitement are physiologically similar, and by changing your mindset to see the act of public speaking as an exciting opportunity rather than a daunting task, you can improve your performance. "The accident stripped my confidence." Alix is a freelance journalist, copywriter and certified cheese addict. She has a love for academics, having studied both journalism and law and having managed to combine the two – with one of her varied positions a media reporter for a criminal barrister on the island of Bermuda! Alix started out as a feature writer for lads' mags in the early 2000s and learned early in her career that she had a knack for writing for very different audiences. From humorous articles one day, to in-depth white papers the next, she loves a writing challenge. Alix and I have met several times at You Are The Media events; I even gave her a very speedy hug at Creator Day this year as she attempted to break the most hugs in a minute world record (she came very close!) With her varied career and personal challenges, Alix has an incredible story that she wants (and should) share with the world. To that end, she has enrolled in my Speak Like a Speaker Club and very bravely put herself forward for Matt Denyer's Failed Nights event next year, where she'll speak for 15 minutes on her ‘failures'! Despite the title, it's an uplifting and humorous event full of love and learning. (I spoke this year and had a riotous time!) This was a lively 30 minutes. I first met Rebecca at a YATM Lunch Club and again when we were asked to speak at a Federation for Small Business event. Most recently Rebecca was on stage for the YATM Creator Day where she spoke about her journey from 5* Indonesian high-flyer to pandemic refugee, having to work her way back up from nothing when the world was in lockdown. It's a fascinating story.   She founded Upgrading Women, a media company and marketing agency helping feminists in business go to market. The agency is a 15-women operation, each with her speciality from LinkedIn to podcasts to newsletters. From the agency's success, Rebecca launched Girl Brand Content Club, an affordable way for coaches and service providers to ‘steal' her content marketing best practices. Whenever we speak, we hope to influence, build trust, and create emotional bonds, whether for business, a relationship or as a parent but how do we do that without crossing over to the dark side of manipulation and arrogance? At the end of last year Brand Strategist, Podcast Host, and Founder of Brand Compass, Shelley Röstlund asked me to help her prepare for a talk she'd been asked to give on stage to an audience of 200 peers for You Are the Media Creator Day in Poole, Dorset in April. She'd been on stage before but found it uncomfortable, so much so she couldn't even remember the experience. She explained during a conversation we had for this podcast in February how she was terrified of the ‘bobbing' heads beyond the lights! Well, she did it! I was there and can report, that in fact - she smashed it! Even better than that, she remembers the whole experience and she had some amazing feedback (she got mobbed in the ladies after!) This conversation was our first chance to have a full debrief about the day, the talk and the aftermath. We discuss the process I took her through. From ‘pulling out' the stories that were relevant and would resonate with the audience to getting her past ‘uncanny valley'. Shelley underlines the importance of storytelling for your personal brand. It was also something that she took away from our work together. The quality of conversations she had after the event surprised her. In our conversation she tells me she's learnt not to edit those stories because you don't know what will ultimately resonate with the audience. She says, ‘tell your story, in your voice and in a way that's comfortable for you'. I couldn't has said it better myself.   If you're about to give a talk or presentation and want to speak with confidence. Or if speaking to your audience is something you want to do more of, but fear is holding you back, then my conversation with Shelley is a must!   Find Shelley at: https://shelleyrostlund.com/ To find out more about Power To Speak coaching follow Jackie Goddard on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackiegoddardpowertospeak/ Or message her through the website: www.powertospeak.co.uk For tips and techniques on improving your public speaking and getting in front of your audience, sign up for the fortnightly Power To Speak newsletter: https://powertospeak.co.uk/newsletter/ And subscribe to the channel for more tips and techniques on how to get excited to speak to your audience.

Stay humble, stay challenged. In this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking I speak with Director, Financial Strategist, and former CFO of Gymshark, Philip Daw.   Chartered accountant, Phil spent 28 years as senior partner in general practice, before in 2019, he was tempted by fast-growing gym wear brand, Gymshark to join them as chief financial officer (CFO).   A brave move considering founder, Ben Francis, was only 27 and the average age of Gymshark employees was 28, but Phil embraced the challenge. During his time with them they became what's known as a ‘Unicorn' business, that is they achieved a billion-dollar valuation!   Now, as Director and financial lead at We Are Whanau, alongside former Gymshark president, Steve Hewitt, Phil helps other companies find their ‘North Star' and progress to Unicorn status.   Of course, this is fascinating stuff but - I hear you ask - what has this got to do with Speaking About Speaking?   Let me explain... I knew very little about Gymshark, the business or its ethos before Phil asked me in September 2021 to go to Gymshark HQ in Solihull and work with him and the team to help improve their public speaking skills. They were presenting to an important and formidable audience and Phil in particular needed a confidence boost.   As I always do, before heading off I did a little research and found that founder, Ben Francis, being an introvert, realised his lack of speaking confidence was making his audience feel uncomfortable, so decided it was his duty to learn the art of public.   I also found that the company motto is ‘Stay Humble.' Which I love! For me, humility is an underestimated but crucial quality that creates curious and compassionate speakers.   I was honoured and excited to have Philip join me for this conversation. We discussed all of the above. Plus, the power of ... Building a culture that empowers people. Influencer marketing. A simple business model. The sliding doors moment. What is homophily and does it make the boat go faster? In this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking I speak with Trainer, Coach and Speaker, Adam Armstrong, a former Head Boy of and teacher at the famous Italia Conti Performing Arts School. His acting credits include The Bill, Grange Hill, and The Minder. And his students have included Russell Brand, Danny Mays, Martine McCutcheon, and Claire goose. I met Adam a year ago when, alongside fellow acting coach, Peter Ferris, we designed an acting course for stunt trainees which we now run for the British Stunt Register. Adam also founded his own training company, Herald, in 2009, which offers bespoke presentation training and coaching around personal effectiveness, communication skills, creative thinking and change management. Also, he's studied Psychology and NLP, and he's ex-champion runner, completing a mile in very close to 4 minutes! Before I met Adam, I'd never heard the word homophily or the expression ‘Does it make the boat go faster?' Now I use both regularly! But my reason for being is to use my training as an actor and artist to build connection, confidence, and resilience, through improvisation, play, and positivity. Follow TRIPP to help develop your creativity and your joy. So, what does T.R.I.P.P. stand for? T - Truth but can also represent TRUST. 'Confidence is a trust in oneself.' Cicero R - Resilience. The joy within. Finding and owning your story. I - Improvising but can also represent INNOVATION (creativity) "You Can't Use Up Creativity, the More You Use the More You Have" Maya Angelou P - Play. "Podcasting changed my life!" so says podcast Junkie, Harry Duran. In this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking my guest, Podcast Strategist, Keynote Speaker, Author and Podcast Junkie, Harry and I discuss the merits of an actors training and how it can help you show and share your vulnerable side. Harry spent 20 years working in the Marketing departments of JPMorganChase and E-Trade before switching to the world of podcasting. He's hosted his own show since 2014 and has published over 300+ interviews across his 3 shows. Originally, with an interest in electronic music, he intended to podcast interview DJs but soon pivoted when he realised that tracking down and interviewing superstar DJs wasn't so easy! And so, Podcast Junkies was born, an interview-based show focused on, he says, the true superstars of podcasting, the hosts themselves. He's since founded FullCast, a full-service, done-for-you podcast agency and has made it his personal mission to help one thousand business owners launch their podcast and become the leading authority in their market. And if that wasn't enough, he founded and hosts the Vertical Farming Podcast. He explains what that is and why finding a niche, especially if it's on a topic that 'lights you up' can lead to success for you and your audience. This is a fascinating conversation about speaking, podcasting, acting, and farming! Focusing on collaboration, enjoyment, mindset, and everything that builds the momentum that leads to sales and growth - as long as it's fun! He's a modern-day renaissance man, curious, creative, collaborative and a consistent content creator. We talk about the journey (including stints in the military and broadcasting) that led him to speaking on stages and how congruence, consistency and creativity (so many great C words!!) have contributed to his success. We discuss the importance video content for your social media (Matt has become a bit of a celebrity with his clients by vlogging his adventures), and how even an employee needs a personal brand. A firecracker when it comes to speaking, his energy onstage and off is frenetic and infectious. As a professional speaker, he talks about the WHAT, HOW & WHY of what makes a brand more memorable and meaningful. Jon describes himself as a 'firecracker' and he's not exaggerating! He is dynamic, different (he started our conversation wearing a Panda's head!) and an advocate of 'dopamine storytelling'. He explains what that is in our fascinating and all-too-short conversation. He tells me how he trained to be a speaker before he became a marketing strategist and we discuss amongst other things whether speakers are extroverts or introverts, and what makes him nervous on stage. Plus, what he mean by Newsjacking and Fartstorming! His answer to what makes a good speaker good and a bad speaker suck is quotable. So here it is... 'Good speakers always have the end in mind. Bad speakers always have themselves in mind.' So true. It's always great fun talking to Jon and I promise it'll be as much fun to listen.   To find out more about Jon follow him on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonburkhart/ To find out more about Power To Speak coaching follow Jackie Goddard on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackiegoddardpowertospeak/ Or message her through the website: www.powertospeak.co.uk For tips and techniques on improving your public speaking and getting in front of your audience, sign up for the fortnightly Power To Speak newsletter: https://landing.mailerlite.com/webforms/landing/h0x0h8 And download the FREE How To Impact, Influence and Inspire Your Audience E-booklet: https://landing.mailerlite.com/webforms/landing/r4g3m0

My guest for this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking was the marketing legend, Mark Schaefer. I first became aware of Mark through the marketing-based community You Are The Media when during lockdown and with Covid he spoke at one of their Zoom events. He likes to say he was a Covid early adopter. I feel incredibly fortunate that he agreed to come on my little ol' podcast as not only is he a globally recognised speaker of 20 years, (his speeches have inspired audiences in 40 countries) but he's also the best-selling author of 10 books. Including Belonging to the Brand, a book on the role of community in modern marketing in which he dedicates a chapter to Mark Masters, founder of You Are The Media. He also co-authored The Most Amazing Marketing Book Ever with his own community, Rise. (FYI, my own podcast is referenced, and I get a mention in the Endnotes!!) His blog, GROW, and podcast “The Marketing Companion” are ranked among the top-rated publications in the marketing field. He's a futurist, business consultant and educator. And I was right - 30 minutes wasn't long enough. However, the 43 minutes we spent together were incredibly insightful if you want to get paid to speak, write a book, develop your personal brand and become KNOWN! Mark shares his humble speaking beginnings when payment was a chicken dinner. He tells of how he put on his 'big boy pants' and battled his nerves to get on stage. We discuss what should come first the book or the talk and how to monetise both. He also shares some novel ways to get compensated for speaking and why, even though he coaches speakers he's never been coached himself! And at the end of it all declares, Personal Brand is Everything! In 2022 she was named one of the NatWest Telegraph 100 Female Entrepreneurs to Watch. Anna is a huge advocate for diversity in marketing and is investing in new ways of capturing diverse voices. Most recently Anna has joined 36 authors, from 10 countries, to collaborate on a Mark Schaefer project and write the first book ever created entirely by a Web3 community entitled, The Most Amazing Marketing Book Ever. In her chapter, Anna discusses Experiential marketing. She reads her own chapter and tells me how reading your own words is harder than it looks. Anna is also a speaker. She has presented at, among others at Brighton SEO and the You Are the Media Creator Day. She is multi-faceted and multi-talented. Among the questions, I asked Anna was what advice would she give to an introvert, i.e., somebody that's quite shy but knows they need to get out there and promote themselves by speaking in public? Her answer was to start where you feel comfortable and with an audience that will encourage and support you and also give you constructive (not destructive) feedback. And I agree. Take baby steps! Start small and start with an audience that loves and supports you. For Anna and myself that audience is the You Are The Media community, but for you, it might be a group, or online community you belong to, family or even your other half (an audience of 1 is still an audience). Anna also tells me how you can successfully market Christmas dinner in a tin! Be daring with your marketing, she says. And actually what that does is that keeps people very small because they're frightened of showing up as themselves. And so we hide, we hide behind the character we think we should be. So we play rather than actually being…” “… that is really important what you have there, that knowledge you have, that that message you want to share is really important. As your audience, you are telling me this and I'm listening.  As an audience, I can tell you that this is worth sharing.”“Doesn't matter how successful you are. Trevor Young is a Strategist, Consultant and a Content Marketing & Communications coach. He's also an Author & Speaker, a Content Creator & Social Broadcaster. He provides "up-to-the-minute communications strategies and astute guidance for forward-thinking individuals and businesses wanting to grow their influence and create more impact in the marketplace." If you make content to promote your business you NEED to listen to my conversation with Trevor. A 'country kid' from Australia and son of a bank manager, Trevor grew up in a bank next door to the local newspaper offices. He went to sleep to the sound of the printing press. No surprise then that he became a journalist before moving into the world of social media and content marketing. He's been blogging since 2007 and has written 2 books, Micro Domination and Content Marketing for PR. He's also a personal brand mentor and guide (he's known as the PR Warrior), speaker, educator and content creator. We talk about his growing up in Warracknabeal (yes, that's a real place!), his initial fear of public speaking (he did his first 50 talks for nothing), his love of writing, the benefit (and pitfalls) of self-publishing and how writing a book has opened doors to other opportunities. On creating content, he says we should 'nail our colours to the mast!' What is it we want to be known for? We are our own media companies and should pick one platform, master it, and then move on to the next. He has some great advice on how to earn your audience and 'cut through the noise.' And apart from all of the above we just about had time to discuss when's a good time to write the great Australian crime novel and his time on legendary Aussie soap, Neighbours!! Seriously, there were SO many takeaways, from our conversation. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Jerry Seinfeld once quipped: “According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.” We are always presenting ourselves, our story and our ideas, whether we're speaking on-stage or at a meet-up, in boardroom meetings, in our video content, and podcast interviews. But for many of us, it's not something we like doing, while others don't mind speaking in public, but they make a hash of it because they're not prepared, and they don't necessarily take their audience into consideration. Let's cut to the chase: Building a thought leader brand often will require you to communicate your message from multiple platforms. Not only is it a powerful proposition, but it's also a privilege to be able to present to an audience, whether virtually, in-person on-stage, or via our content (webinars, videos, podcasts, etc). This is the topic we chat about in this episode of the Reputation Revolution, and to help us do just that is JACKIE GODDARD, founder of Power to Speak. Jackie is a creative producer, acting, voice and presentation coach who helps entrepreneurs, leaders and speakers get excited about sharing their business ideas! In this episode, she shares how she works with her clients so they can step up and communicate confidently and powerfully on any platform. Jackie explains the importance of knowing why you're there (on the virtual or physical stage), and what the value is that you're sharing. Your story is your bedrock, she says, and you should be able to adapt it to different platforms. Jackie discusses: The power of gaining insights on what people think about you ( she refers to the “criticism sandwich” - good point, bad point, good point)Why creating a bank of personal examples and stories can give you the communications edge ("start a story journal" and collect anecdotes and stories, Jackie recommends)The importance of having a solid understanding of your audience. "You want to inform, interest, entertain your audience": What stories can you tell that will benefit? What do you want your audience to feel? What do you want them to go away and do? What action do you want them to take?Imposter syndrome, and why many people - as per Jerry Seinfeld's quote - are averse to speaking in public. "We have more knowledge on our subject than we think!" Jackie says. Whether you participate in podcasts, panels, meetups, boardroom presentations, workshops, Zoom presentations, or are asked to deliver keynote presentations, you'll find this chat with Jackie helpful and inspiring!

Likeability and reliability don't seem like the sexiest of success traits and yet, they are some of the most underrated ones, especially when we move away from the stereotypes of successful people being uncaring and lacking in empathy and we are awakening to the need to have a good relationship with our customers and the people whose products and services we buy.
