In this episode, join Jared Sorensen and Will Harris as they navigate the journey of building a successful regenerative agriculture business.Whether you're a seasoned farmer, aspiring entrepreneur, or simply passionate about creating a more sustainable future, this episode is packed with valuable insights and inspiration to guide you on your journey.ABOUT THE GUEST: Will Harris is a fourth-generation cattleman, who tends the same land that his great-grandfather settled in 1866. Born and raised at White Oak Pastures, Will left home to attend the University of Georgia's School of Agriculture, where he was trained in the industrial farming methods that had taken hold after World War II. Will graduated in 1976 and returned to Bluffton where he and his father continued to raise cattle using pesticides, herbicides, hormones, and antibiotics. They also fed their herd a high-carbohydrate diet of corn and soy. These tools did a fantastic job of taking the cost out of the system, but in the mid-1990s Will became disenchanted with the excesses of these industrialized methods. They had created a monoculture for their cattle, and, as Will says, "nature abhors a monoculture." In 1995, Will made the audacious decision to return to the farming methods his great-grandfather had used 130 years before.Since Will has successfully implemented these changes, he has been recognized all over the world as a leader in humane animal husbandry and environmental sustainability. Will is the immediate past President of the Board of Directors of Georgia Organics. He is the Beef Director of the American Grassfed Association and was selected 2011 Business Person of the year for Georgia by the Small Business Administration.Be sure to check out our previous episodes and click on the link to join our Webinar series: https://www.agsteward.fyi/registration-page--1 or visit our YouTube channel.

Some people do things the way things have always been done. Others develop that curiosity muscle and are able to take in new information, weigh it against experience and, yes, intuition, and ultimately create new systems that work. The first thing Jared teaches a new farmer is “know thyself.” Jared and Selena have been married 26 years and are the parents of nine children and one grandchild. They are 3rd generation ranchers, managing the operation Jared's grandfather and father built in Secret Pass and Clover Valley, Nevada. Jared is a life-long learner and has been applying and teaching principles of holistic management, soil regeneration, and biodynamics. Jared has mentored many young people seeking to get a start in agriculture. The Sorensens raise and market grass fed beef, teach onsite and virtual classes, and offer internships on the ranch. In this episode… partnering with his father and grandfather at age 16 making the shift to holistic, regenerative practices grazing management: mob grazing, the principle of thirds bringing the microscope to the farm: measuring the effectiveness of new practices by tracking the presence of a balanced microbial population healing the water cycle biologically—beavers as permaculture designers!; keyline systems the importance of knowing your why, knowing yourself…don't set yourself up for failure by adopting a system that's not yours, without taking the time to get to know yourself and what YOU were created to do here on this earth, your unique why…and then having the courage to embody that truth introducing a biodynamic approach to the ranch, being the human connection between heaven and earth to be better stewards of the earth, we need to increase our awareness, get past our “know it all” egoic tendency, moving past judgement and getting curious, knowing there's something we can learn from everyone and every situation. A big dose of humility will serve us well it IS possible to break into agriculture without inheriting a farm Nature is more resilient than we give it credit for. There's so much grace and forgiveness in trying to do the right thing, in getting past our arrogance and our ego. Progress can be made! Tonight we talk about THE BIG THREE. Yes, that is what she said, don't think too hard on it though. Specifically though, the concept of the three big questions that Jared Sorensen thought RPGs should be able to answer, and why they're pretty good questions. Want to see us pick apart some basic concepts until everything's on fire? Well we do that every week, but we did it really good this time and brought lots of extra stuff to burn for the dumpster fire this time so sit back with a chair and get a nice tan from it! Never know, you may even find it useful, too! Linktr.ee/flailforward

Important note: It seems conventional on other podcasts I listen, to mention explicit language - in case your kids are around while you listen or something. There are a few F-words in this episode. I apologise I forgot to mention it in the intro to the episode. This week on the podcast we geek out about tabletop roleplaying games (and a bunch of other stuff - don't feel left out if you don't play tabletop roleplaying games) with an awesome guest: Luke Crane. Luke had won multiple Origins Awards for Best Roleplaying Games in 2006 for his first system Burning Wheel and again in 2008 for MouseGuard. He also designed several other games such as Burning Empires, FreeMarket (with Jared Sorensen) and recently Torchbearer. Luke regularly talks about game design as a variety of events and conventions. Last but certainly not least, Luke is also the Head of Games for Kickstarter, the online crowdfunding website. He gets to support thriving game designers bring their projects to life thanks to the support of fans on the popular crowdfunding platform. We had a fantastic conversation about the design voices in Luke's head, his lunar origins, authors intentions in game design, his latin studies, the Burning Wheel RPG system, his favourite games and movies, how games and tabletop games in particular are seeing a renaissance thanks to crowdfunding and more. Enjoy! Let’s talk about how we talk about game designs. Let’s talk about how a game does its thing and how a design achieves (or doesn’t) its selected goals. What is your game about and how is it about it? Let’s do that by talking about variations on the “Big Three” questions of RPG design. The audio in this early episode is, uh, unpolished. Thankfully, writer, interviewer, and friend of the show, Brie Sheldon, stepped up to transcribe this episode, so you can read that transcript now, too! We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Jared Sorensen in these show notes so that you can google him and read more of him. Design Games is made possible by our supporters at Patreon, where you can back NDP and Will right now. Every dollar helps.
