MY 1,000TH EPISODE!!!Good Morning! Today's Witness is about me and my journey with this podcast. Today is my 1,000th episode. I can hardly believe it! Back in 2019, I decided I wanted to change my career. I had my undergraduate degree in psychology and my Master's degree in Special Education. I was a teacher at a DoD school in Turkey for 2 years when our son Sam was born. Tony and I had both decided before having kids that I would stay home with them when we did have them. So, from Turkey we moved to New Jersey, where we stayed for 5 years, and we had two more boys, Noah & Ryan. I stayed home with the boys through our stay in New Jersey, our move to Germany, and our move to England. When we moved back to Massachusetts, our boys were in 6th grade, 4th grade, and 2nd grade. I decided to try to go back to work.I was a licensed teacher in NJ, but needed to take the tests in MA to get my license. While I studied for the tests, I decided to substitute teach. Once I got my license, I applied for a few jobs, but all of my teaching experience was now at least 10 years old. I also realized that although our boys were in school they were struggling with things and I couldn't really get a traditional teaching job because I never knew when I would have to go to school to pick our son up from school, or when one of our kids would refuse to go to school and I would need to stay home to watch him.I started trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I had done a lot of personal development stuff in the years from 2015, when we moved back to the states, to 2019, when I decided what I wanted to do besides being a wife and mother. I had been talking to a lot of people who were unhappy with some aspects of their lives, and yet they felt stuck. They felt like there was nothing they could do about it. I knew this wasn't true. I knew there was always something you could do to either change the situation you are in or change who you are in the situation. I decided to become a life coach so I could help people get unstuck. I wanted to help them overcome their challenges so they could live a happy and fulfilling life.I looked through several programs. One day, I found the Life Purpose Institute. They had a program where you could become a life coach and a spiritual coach. This was perfect for me as my heart really lies in the spiritual coaching, but I also still wanted to help people who were stuck with life issues as well. The program consisted of 60 hours of training. I took the 5-day intensive with four follow-up classes. After doing peer coaching, practice coaching, and taking a final exam, I was finally certified in December of 2019. I made my marketing plan and I was all set to go out and do workshops at local churches and local libraries. I was all set to build this business, and then three months later Covid happened and we were all stuck inside. No workshops, not speaking engagements, my marketing plan went out the window. It was also difficult because as I was learning how to have my own business and work from home, I also had my husband and three kids at home with me. I figured it out, I got some clients, and I was on my way. In June of 2020, I started a blog. Each week, I would write an article, sometimes about life coaching, but they mostly turned out to be Spiritual in content. I found out that writing about Jesus and my faith came pretty easily to me, much to my surprise. I say I was surprised because just a few years earlier, I was asking the Lord why I was the only person in my family who couldn't write. My siblings are all great writers. I have two siblings who have published books. My younger siblings are all really good at writing poems. It was just me who felt like I couldn't write. Either God changed that, or I just hadn't found what I liked to write about yet.In 2020, in the month of May, I decided to go on Facebook Live every day. I thought if I can't go out and get the word out about my business, maybe I could do it on Facebook. At this time, my brother Danny reached out to me and said if I wanted to speak in Public, I should join the Toastmasters Club, which teaches people how to do public speaking and also gives you lots of opportunities to practice. I was nervous, but I decided to give it a try and found out I really liked it. I even won awards in their annual speech contest three years in a row.For Christmas in 2020, my brother Danny and his wife Jess gave me a Blue Snowball iCE microphone so that I could have it if I wanted to go online or if I wanted to do a podcast. I was so excited. I spent the next few months trying to figure out what to call my podcast, what type of podcast it would be, and so on. My friend Kim helped me come up with the logo for it. I was so excited to see that it was actually happening. At this point, I have been listening to the Big Life Podcast with Pamela Crim for over 3 years now. She does a daily devotional podcast, and it is amazing. You should definitely check it out. I decided that I wanted to do this too. I decided each day  I would take a scripture verse and relate it to real life somehow. I was all set to go.Except for the fact that I had no idea how to start a podcast. I didn't know what website to use, what program to use to record it or edit it, how to upload it, or get it out to all the podcasting websites. Luckily, my brother John and his wife Rebecca had been doing a League of Legends podcast for about a year at this point. They actually had another podcast about movie reviews. So, I asked if they could get on a Zoom call with me and teach me. They were happy to help. So, after some help from them, I was able to find some free music on the internet to use to begin and end my podcasts. I wrote my intro and outro, and I was ready to go.My first episode was released on June 16, 2021. That was a Wednesday. It is funny looking back because I remember thinking I should start on a Monday, but at the same time, I didn't want to wait any longer. I just wanted to start. Now, almost four years later, I have reached my 1,000th episode. It has been such a fun journey. The podcast has evolved over time. During February 2022, my prayer group decided to do an online Life in the Spirit Seminar. The people who attended said that what they liked best about the seminar was listening to everyone's experiences about certain topics. This is when I decided to add “Witness Wednesdays” to the podcast lineup. Every Wednesday, I was hoping to get a different person who would talk about how God was working in their lives. At the beginning, I got a lot of different people. I have also given a lot of the witnesses myself, which was great because it helped me to look at the various events in my life and see how God was working in all of them! Then I discovered the PopWe website from Matthew West and his Father, along with the Global Awakening website and the Encounter Ministry's website. God is definitely still working powerfully in this world, and so there is no shortage of testimonies out there talking about it.The next change came when I felt the Holy Spirit prompting me to add the words of prophecy that we receive in my prayer group to the end of each episode. I felt like the Lord wanted me to get His word out to more than just those in our prayer group. I also hope that if we get used to hearing what the Lord's voice sounds like and the types of things he usually says, we can better discern when it is not the Lord's voice speaking to us. We will hopefully be able to block out or ignore the enemy's voice more easily. If you want to receive a daily email with these Words from the Lord, email me at Catherine@findingtruenorthcoaching.com. They really are amazing. It really helps us to get to know the Lord in a different way. It helps us to see him in another light. It also usually happens to be just what you needed to hear that day.I want to take this time to thank every single person who has listened to even just one of my episodes. It means the world to me that you would take the time out of your day to listen. Thank you to those who have reached out over the years to share your testimony for Witness Wednesday or have just reached out to encourage me and let me know you like the podcast. I am so grateful to God for each and every one of you. Sometimes I will write a podcast, and I think it doesn't even make any sense, and then someone will reach out and say that the podcast really spoke to them. The Holy Spirit is good like that. He knows what people need to hear and speaks through me. I am well aware that it is not I writing these podcasts alone. I am aware that the Holy Spirit is working through me, and I am so grateful that God is willing to use me.My goal when starting this podcast was that I could help those who listen walk more boldly in their faith. My goal is to help everyone learn more about what it means to have the Holy Spirit living inside of you. I want everyone to discover the power they have living inside of them. The devil doesn't want you to know. He wants you to feel alone and weak. This is not the case. You are never alone as God never leaves your side and you are not weak. You have the same Holy Spirit that Jesus had living inside of you. The same one that empowered Jesus to do all of the miracles. The same one that raised Jesus from the dead.Did you know that Jesus didn't do any miracles before He was baptized? That is because He chose to only use the human part of himself, along with the Holy Spirit to do miracles. That means that you have that same power living inside of you! What are you doing with it? How are you using it? How could you be using it? John 14:12-14, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.  And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”Did you hear that? “Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” Think of the most amazing thing that Jesus did. That thing that you just can't believe He could do. Then reread that verse. Do you believe in Jesus? Yes, then you can do the things he did and even greater things. This is the whole point of this podcast. I hope that if you have been with me for a while now, you are starting to realize this to be true. I hope you are starting to understand how powerful you really are. The enemy doesn't want you to know this, and I am hoping that enough of us start using the power the Lord has given us, and then others see us and they join in, and before we know it, we are all living in the power of the Holy Spirit. Can you imagine how different this world would be if we were all aware and living in the power that the Lord gave us?I love each and every one of you. I am beyond grateful for your support. If you are listening and I don't know you, I would love to get to know you. Please reach out to me through email at catherine@findingtruenorthcoaching.com. If you would like to give your testimony, send me an email. It really doesn't take a lot of time and could really help someone else out. If you would like prayers, send me an email. A Personal Relationship With GodPsalm 91:4 “He will cover you with his feathers.  He will shelter you with his wings.  His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”I love this image.  I picture the Lord as a giant eagle and He puts his wing over us like we would put our arm around a child.  When I think of this I am filled up with a sense of love that I just can't explain.  Sometimes I think we think of the Lord as this all mighty being that is so magnificent and is so busy that He doesn't really have time for us.  I guess I don't really mean that he doesn't have time for us.  I think that we all know that He is listening to our prayers.  I think we know that He spends lots of time on us.  I guess what I mean is that we don't really think that He knows us personally, if that makes sense.  I don't know, maybe I am wrong.  Take a minute and think about your impression of God.  What comes to mind when you try to picture Him.  Do you think of a loving father, do you think of an almighty God that is kind of intimidating, do you think of someone that answers your prayers, but does not know you personally?  How do you picture God?  I think the reason I am asking this is because I think that many of us think of God as someone that is unapproachable.  Yes, we can pray to Him and He will answer our prayers, but that is the extent of the relationship.  I wonder how many of us know that God longs to have a personal relationship with each and every one of us.  Yes, even you.  God wants to have a personal relationship with you.  When I first heard this, I thought, what does that even mean?  How does one have a personal relationship with someone that they can't see, hear, touch, talk to, etc.  This is when I began my journey to have a personal relationship with our Heavenly Father. (Actually with all three members of the Trinity) So, how does one begin something when they have no idea how to do it?  Lots of ways I guess.  What I did was try to learn what it means to have a personal relationship with God.  I read some books and talked to lots of people.  Here is what I have learned so far.  Although I am still very much in the learning phase.First, you can talk to Him.  You can talk to God anytime you want to.  He is always willing to listen.  You can talk to Him about anything.  Sometimes I think we feel as though God is busy and so we come to Him when we really need Him, but we don't want to bother Him with our day to day stuff.  Or at least that's how I felt.  God has time for you whenever you want.  He is not bound by the same limits we are when it comest to time or attention.  He can be there for each of us all of the time.  He is not only willing to listen, but He wants to listen.  He loves to hear about your day.  If you are a parent, think about how happy you are when your children, no matter what age they are, take the time to tell you about their day.  This is how God feels when you take the time to just sit and talk with Him about whatever is on your mind.  Second, get to know who God is.  If you are trying to develop a personal relationship with someone one you would learn as much about that person as you can.  The same is true with God.  The best way you can learn more about God is to read the Bible.  Reading scripture and spending time in God's word is a great way to feel closer to Him.  The more you read about and learn about our Heavenly Father, the more you will begin to see Him in a different light.  You will begin to see how much He truly loves His people.  How much He has done and continues to do for us, even when we don't deserve it.  Reading scripture will help you to get to see several different sides of God.  You will get to learn so many different things about Him.  Yes, God is all mighty and He is also very compassionate.  Trust me, if you want to feel closer to the Lord, spend time daily in scripture.  Another way you can develop a personal relationship with God is to listen to what He has to say.  Once you start to talk with God and tell Him all about your day, then you can also spend some quiet time just listening to what He has to say.  You will most likely not get an audible voice that you can hear, however, some people have had this extraordinary gift.  What I hear about most often is that you get a sense or a thought that comes to mind.  For instance you are sitting there quietly and you tell God that you are available and listening.  Then sometimes you will get a thought in your head from God.  A sentence, a statement, some people get visions.  It could be whatever you are open to.  God is not going to force this on you.  He will talk with you if you want to listen but only when you are open to it.  I have had words of prophecy come to me in this way occasionally.  How I usually listen to God is that I write Him a letter in my journal and then I tell Him that am listening and then I write down any thought that comes to my mind.  I do not sensor it, I do not ask myself if this is really God talking, I just trust that I have told Him I am listening and so He is talking.  That being said, I understand that I am new to listening to God and also that I may have heard something wrong or added something I wanted to hear.  So, I do not take everything I write down as gospel, but I have found it is a great way for me to take time to listen to the Lord.  I learned this letter writing technique from Fern Gorin at the Life Purpose Institute.  Those are just a few ways you can develop a personal relationship with God.  I had no idea I was going to talk about that today.  I thought for sure it was going to be about how God is our shield and our refuge.  The Holy Spirit is funny like that.  We think we have a plan but He knows best and so He just takes over.  I love it when that happens.  I think it is important that we develop a personal relationship with God so that we can truly understand how much He loves us.  Also, so that we can truly understand how much he knows us personally.  We are not just another person to Him.  We don't get lost in the shuffle.  He calls each of us by name.   I will leave you with a word of prophecy from my prayer group that shows you just how much God wants to have a personal relationship with you.  “I have called you by name into life. I have called you every day by your name because I know you, I love you, because you are my friend.”Dear Heavenly Father, I ask that you bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, we ask that you help us develop a personal relationship with you. We pray that you help us to understand how much you love us and how much you know each one of us personally. We thank you so much, Lord, for that personal attention.  We thank you for all the countless times you have listened to us, and we pray that we can teach us how to quiet our minds and listen to you.  We love you, Lord, and we long to have a personal relationship with you.  We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen.  Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to Walk Boldly With Jesus. I look forward to seeing you again tomorrow. Remember, Jesus loves you just as you are, and so do I. Have a blessed day.Today's Word from the Lord was received in October 2024 by a member of my Catholic Charismatic Prayer Group. Christine Fruehwirth almost died twice from stress-related health crises. She shares her hard-fought experience in her new book, Surviving Life's Storms and Thriving in the Aftermath, as well as in her life coaching and career counseling business to help people reach their full potential. Surviving Life's Storms and Thriving in the Aftermath discusses the four stages of living that she developed and identifies as Surviving, Stabilizing, Emerging and Thriving. She explores the distinct stages of the "survive to thrive" journey and how to apply this framework to careers, marriage, relationships and parenting. She includes what it takes to be able to move through these stages by addressing what is holding people back and the need to heal inner wounds. Christine was inspired to write Surviving Life's Storms and Thriving in the Aftermath because of her youngest son's incredible life journey the last five years, as well as wanting to share her own story in facing one challenge after another during the past decade, including losing her grandparents during the pandemic, family estrangement, significant health issues and divorce. This book includes stories and insights from individuals she has been blessed to know who can not only relate to but, in many cases, have moved through the four stages of living. "Stagnation is a risk and a choice," Christine says. Christine has had more than 20 years of career counseling and life coaching experience through her successful business, FlexCareers Consulting. Her passion has been helping stay-at-home parents return to the workplace and working parents who are looking for more balance in their lives, though she helps clients of all ages start or reinvent their careers. From 2009 to 2019, Christine worked as a Career Consultant and Instructor of a Career Management Strategy course at George Washington University, and most recently at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. During her years working in higher education, she developed an expertise in helping undergraduates of all majors recruit for and successfully obtain internships and full-time positions in the Financial Services industry. She spent a decade in that industry focused on consumer and later investment banking, working for major financial institutions including Bank of America, Capital One and Wells Fargo. Her last few years in the industry were spent at Lending Tree on the senior leadership team. Her perspective is unique because of her 23 years of parenting, 20 years of career and life coaching experience, and 10 years of teaching college students. Her hope for her book is to help readers achieve their full potential no matter what stage of life they are in, be in a sustainable thriving state going forward, and then directly help or motivate others on their "survive to thrive" journeys. Christine earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Villanova University in 1991 and an MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia in 1996. Christine has earned her life and career coaching certification through the Life Purpose Institute and has taken life coaching classes through the Coaches Training Institute. Christine understands the joys and challenges of all types of work/family balance issues, as well as what employers are looking for both those starting their career and those re-entering the workforce. Bury Your Old Do-It-Yourself LifeRomans 8:12-14 “So don't you see that we don't owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent. There's nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. God's Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go!”The translation I used this morning is the message translation.  I don't usually use this translation, however, when I heard this verse with the translation yesterday on the Big Life Devotional Podcast by Pamela Crim, I knew it was the one I wanted to share with you.  I think the other versions are good to, I just think this one says it so plainly it is hard to miss the message.  The verse starts off by saying that we don't owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent.  I think this is hard for us to imagine.  Do you know what the verse is talking about when it says, “this old do-it-yourself life?”  I imagine it means all the things we try to do on our own, without inviting God into them.  I remember when I was on a retreat one time I felt as if I heard God tell me, “You are looking every where else for answers but not to me.”  I was confused at first because of course I had asked God for help, of course I prayed about my situation.  But what he revealed to me is that yes, I asked Him for help, but then I proceeded to try and figure the solution out on my own.  I read every book I could on marriages or on parenting.  I asked everyone I knew and really listened to what they had to say.  I was really good at listening the my friends, the books, the professionals and implementing their advice.  However, I wasn't taking the time to sit with God and listen to Him.  I would talk at God, maybe to God, but not with God.  It wouldn't be a back and forth conversation.  I would lay all my problems at His feet, ask Him how I could fix them, and then end prayer time without listening to how he wanted me to fix them.  Have you ever done this?  Have you ever talked at God? Have you ever laid all your problems at His feet and then picked them back up again and carried them into your day?  I think that is what this verse is talking about.  We don't have to do everything ourselves.  God wants to help us.  He wants us to give Him our problems and then trust for Him to take care of them.  As I am writing that I am thinking, that doesn't mean we can't do anything.  I believe God likes it when we partner with Him.  I don't think God was telling me not to read any parenting books.  What He was telling me was to spend time with Him every single morning.  I started journaling every morning.  I would wake up 30 minutes before I needed to be up with the kids and I would write to God.  I would tell Him all that was on my mind.  I would tell Him the things I read about and ask which things He thought I should try.  I didn't really know too much how to listen to His voice, but just journaling and talking through things with Him was beyond helpful.  I have since learned how to take time and listen to God and it has been amazing.  There are lots of ways you might here God talking, not actually hear his voice, but know what He is saying to you.  One of those ways is sitting still and just listening.  If you ask God to talk to you and then you are still and listen, the things that come to your mind could be from God.  His voice usually sounds a lot like your own voice as that is what if familiar to you.  For instance I asked God to help me figure out what I could do to help my son Ryan who is struggling right now.  I was quiet and listened and then the idea to have Ryan invite his friend to boxing with him so they can both work out their troubles on a punching bag instead of other unhealthy ways.  Was this definitely from God, who knows, but I asked God for a solution and one came to me so I definitely think the Holy Spirit gave me the idea.  When you are listening for God's voice, it will most likely not be a booming voice coming from the sky, like those movies that have a narrator.  God is usually much more subtle than that.  It is usually a thought that is put in your head.  You have to be purposefully listening or you might miss it.  Although having said that I can think of a few stories when God was trying to tell someone something and they didn't want to hear it so they were not listening and He had three different people, strangers even, give them the message they needed to hear.  I believe God is longing for us to spend time listening to Him.  I believe He wants us to come to Him to listen each day.  However, if there is a message He needs you to hear, He will get your attention somehow.  The next part of the verse says, “The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. God's Spirit beckons.”  This is referring to your “do-it-yourself” attitude.  That is not serving you.  There is nothing in that for you.  Do you remember you life before Christ?  Maybe you didn't have a life before Christ.  Maybe you have believed since birth.  Maybe your parents taught you about God your whole life.  When Catholics talk about this they usually say, “I am a cradle Catholic.”  When you hear this they mean they have been Catholic their whole life.  Even if this is you, do you remember a time before you really understood what it all meant?  Do you remember a time when you felt you were on your own and you had to do it all yourself?  Do you remember a time when you knew all about Jesus and yet you lived your life how you wanted to, instead of how He wanted you to?  For some of us this is a specific day and time.  We know exactly when we turned our life over to Jesus and there was no turning back.  For others, it is more like a roller coaster.  We turn to Jesus, then we turn away, then we turn back, then we turn away.  What this verse is saying is that we need to say goodbye to our old life.  The one where we do it all ourselves.  The one where we are too busy for God.  The one where we feel alone and unloved.  The one where we do whatever we want to do.  In other translations it says the one where we live according to our flesh.  This means we listen to what our body wants us to do instead of what God wants us to do.  However, it is time to say goodbye to that old life, it is time to bury it and get on with our new life. The next three words are awesome.  “God's Spirit Beckons” How great is that?  God's Spirit, you know, the one that raised Jesus from the dead, beckons you.  How crazy is that?  God's Spirit is calling out to you, calling you to come closer to God.  The reason we don't have to do everything ourselves is because Jesus died on a cross for us and then went up into heaven to be with His dad.  He didn't want to leave us alone so He sent the Holy Spirit to come be with us.  He sent the Holy Spirit to guide us in His ways.  If we listen to the Holy Spirit, instead of our flesh, we will have life and we will have it abundantly.  If we listen to our flesh we will die.  The last line in the message translation says, “There are things to do and places to go!”  God has amazing plans for your life.  He really does.  Maybe you are in a season right now where that is really hard to believe.  That's ok, you don't have to believe it, I will believe it for you.  I know it to be true.  God wants to shower His children with love and abundance in all things.  He wants to ridiculously bless you.  If you are struggling right now, please hang on.  I don't know God's timing but I know if you are struggling right now, then He is not finished with you yet.  God does not want His children to suffer.  God has places for you to go and things for you to do.  This is true even when we can't see it or don't understand it.  His plans can seem like they come out of no where.  For instance I remember saying, several years ago, “Why am I the only person in my family that can't write?”  My siblings and parents all have such talent in that area and when I try to come up with a poem or a story, nothing would come to me.  Fast forward several years and I am writing a podcast episode daily and I have written two books.  God is a mystery and yet it all makes sense in His eyes.  If you don't know the amazing things God has planned for you, join the club.  We usually don't know them until we are living them.  However, if you are stuck in a pit and can't see any light, know that there is light.  Reach out and talk with someone about it.  Nothing changes if nothing changes.  Talk to God, and take the time to listen.  One trick I have for listening to God's voice, which I learned form Fern Gorin at the Life Purpose Institute is to write a letter to God and then ask God to answer your letter back to you using your pen.  Then you write whatever comes to mind.  Don't question it, don't think about it, just write every thought that comes into your mind.  This has been such a blessing to me.  Listening to what God has to say and then having the written record so I can go back and reread it anytime I need encouragement has been amazing.  If you are struggling right now, give this letter writing a try.  You will be amazed at what you hear from God.  He is so encouraging and loving.  He says the kindest things.  If you are getting thoughts that are not kind, know that is not from the Lord. He only says things that build you up and encourage.  God loves you very much and He doesn't want any of His children to suffer.  He is with you!Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening  to this episode today.  Lord, help us to live by the spirit and not by our flesh.  Help us not only turn to you but actually take the time to slow down and listen to you.  Help guide us and lead us into the amazing life you have for us.  Help us to bury our old do it yourself life and live into a Spirit led life.  Lord, you are amazing and we love you tons!  We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  I look forward to meeting you here again tomorrow.  Remember Jesus loves you and so do I.  Have a blessed day!

Ep 48: Caring for Aging Parents with Erin Chourey

You've Got Lael

I've been thinking a lot about aging and the end of life lately. Probably from working at the hospital. Being aware of my parents' stage of life reminds me of the inevitable reality that I'll lose them someday. My work has given me a front-row view of the aging process. As a coach and hospital social worker, I get to witness the emotions and family dynamics that arise as our loved ones age. Dominant culture tends to treat aging as something to avoid. The process of aging is often met with fear - for aging adults and their family members as well. We don't have a cultural narrative that embraces aging nor values our elders and the gifts they have to offer. We don't have systems or supports in place to care for our elders. It's still an unfortunate reality that if you don't have money in this country, your access to support services and quality care is limited. It's wild since we will all die someday. And we will all lose loved ones. While we continue to advocate for systemic changes, we can come together to support each other and share the responsibility for caring for our loved ones. This stage of life - like most transitions - is also an invitation to do our own inner work. Together, we can begin to shift the narrative to one that honors the aging process and treats our elders with the respect and care they deserve. I know for me and many of my clients, we're starting to cope with the realities of having aging parents or loved ones. We have questions about their intentions and plans for aging. We may have concerns about their mental capacity or their ability to care for themselves. We might feel anxious and unsure of how to navigate difficult conversations and a shift in family roles. For some perspective and wisdom on this topic, I invited Erin Chourey to join us. I hope you find our conversation reassuring, motivating, and empowering. About Erin: Erin Chourey (she/her) is an ICF (International Coaching Federation) Certified Life Coach, trained at the Life Purpose Institute, and is currently working toward her PCC (Professional Coach Certification) credential. Her current coaching specialty is Emotional Wellness and Alignment. Erin has worked in social services as a Residential Counselor, Group Home Manager, and Assistant Teacher for youth, a Case Manager for adults and teens with developmental disabilities, and for 10 years as a public and private Care Manager for aging adults. She then trained as a Life Coach and began her own practice coaching in 2017. In 2020, Erin began a part-time job with Lyra Health as a Mental Health Coach, where she supports employees of major organizations such as Meta (formerly Facebook), Google, Starbucks, Nike, Morgan Stanley, Providence Health, VCA, and many more, in on-line coaching sessions. Her clients range in age, identities, and levels of expertise and management in their fields, and live all over the US. This experience has expanded Erin's understanding of common mental health symptoms people are facing in their individual lives and how they relate to the collective challenges we are all facing together.  Erin is passionate about guiding others to more clearly identify what is most important to them and to assess if they are living in alignment with their own values, or of the dominant cultural values, the values they were taught in their families, or a combination of all. Through this process, many find relief in discovering their own truth, which results in a clearer sense of intentional direction. This eases their suffering and empowers them to function with more joy and purpose. Outside of her role as a Coach, Erin is a lifelong learner, adventurer, spiritual seeker, community member, mother, wife, daughter, and generous friend, who loves collaboration, the forest, the ocean, the rivers, the mountains, the deserts, dancing, yoga, hiking, music, and art.  You can learn more about Erin and her work at www.erinchourey.com RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Multnomah County Aging and Disability Services - https://www.multco.us/ads/locations Aging Life Care Association - https://www.aginglifecare.org// Naomi Feil, Validation Method - https://vfvalidation.org/ Barrett Values Assessment - https://www.valuescentre.com/tools-assessments/pva/ Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande

Two Way Communication With GodEphesians 3:17-19 “ and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.At my prayer group, we put together a book mark each month from the words of prophecies that are recorded throughout the month.  We have a discernment team of four people who go through all the words given and decide what they think Jesus was calling us to that month, what was His proclamation, what was His promise, and what was His directive.  We then put these together on a bookmark for all of our members.  It is our way to remember what it was that God had to say to us that month.  I thought today I would share out latest one with you.  Here is what it says:“Do not fear to come to me. I am your God; I am your joy, your hope, your greatest love. Draw nearer to me every moment and watch the heavens light up with love. You are my child. I love you and I will destroy anything that keeps you from loving me more. I am renewing and healing your heart once more and forever, for my love for you will never ever stop. Bathe yourselves in the river flowing from the throne of God. Let yourselves be carried away in the current and do not be afraid, for I am your God and I love you. Don't just lean or rest your head on me, throw yourself and all your cares on me.”Isn't that amazing?  There are so many things I love about that message from our Lord.  First He starts off telling us not to fear coming closer to Him because He is our God.  You might wonder why He needs to say that.  Why would someone be afraid to come closer to God?  I think this happens more often than we think.  People are afraid to come close to God because they are afraid to get hurt.  Maybe they have a past that is full of pain and mistrust and they are afraid to trust God because they worry He will let them down like so many have in the past.  There are others that are afraid to come close to God because they feel unworthy.  They are afraid God won't love them because they don't love them self.  God knows all of this and starts our right away telling us to be afraid.  Next He says He is our joy, our hope, and our greatest love.  This is so important.  If we come closer to God we can find the things that we are looking for.  We are all looking for joy hope and love.  These can all be found in our heavenly Father.  He is longing to give us all of these things.  He is just waiting for us to come closer and to rely on Him, to lean into Him.  Then it says, to draw nearer to Him every moment and watch the heavens light up with love.  That is a beautiful visual.  Can you imagine what it would look like when heaven lights up with love?  I just imagine bright white lights everyone.  Almost like fireflies filling all the skies, everywhere you look.  Also, fireworks, and they are all white just bursting in the sky and filling it with light.  It makes me smile to think God would be so happy just because we draw nearer to Him with each new moment.  This month's word from our Lord goes on to say that we are His children.  He loves us and will destroy anything that keeps us from loving Him more.  Isn't that an awesome promise from our heavenly Father?  He will destroy whatever is getting in the way of us loving Him.  What is getting in the way of is loving Him more?  What things are we allowing to come between us and God?  Turn them over to the Lord.  Ask Him to destroy those things so you can focus on Him so you can love God more and more.Next the word says, I am renewing and healing your heart once more and forever, for my love for you will never ever stop.  How amazing is that?  God is renewing and healing our hearts once more and forever.  How many of us need our hearts renewed and healed?  How many of us are tired of the heartache of this world?  How many of us need our hearts healed from all the pain this world has caused?  How many of us really need to hear today that God's love will never ever stop? The verse ends with, bathe yourselves in the river flowing from the throne of God. Let yourselves be carried away in the current and do not be afraid, for I am your God and I love you. Don't just lean or rest your head on me, throw yourself and all your cares on me.”  This is another amazing visual.  Can't you just picture being carried away in the current of God's river?  There is a song by Jason Gray called “I'm Gonna Let It Go,” and in this song he has a line that says, “Being carried in the current of your love, when I lean into Your arms, You're enough.”  I always loved that line in the song.  If you are someone who tends to worry a lot that is a great song to listen to.  It makes me smile just to think of bathing in the current of God's love.  Can you just picture God's love washing over you like a river?  The very last line is one that I think we should all make sure we hear today.  God is telling us, don't just lean on me, don't just rest your head on my shoulder, throw yourself and all your cares on me.In other words, don't be half in and half out.  Don't kinda rely on God. Don't tell Him you are turning your worries over to Him, but then continue to try to fix them yourself. Be all in.  Throw all your cares on God and let Him fix them.  Turn to Him and love Him with your whole heart.  Rely on Him and trust Him with everything, not just those things you feel safe handing over.  God is calling us to come close to Him, He is telling us not to be afraid because He is our God and He loves us.  He will never let you down!  Wasn't that an amazing word from God this month?  Did you know God wants to talk to you like that as well?  Did you know you can sit and ask the Lord to talk with you? I have mentioned this before, but I will mention it again because it has been really powerful practice for me.  If you want to hear the Lord talk to you, all you need to do is sit and listen.  Let  God know you are available to listen and He will talk.  However, if you are like me, and you struggle to sit still and listen you an try a journaling exercise.  I sit down and I write a letter to God.  I usually address it Dear Dad, or Hi Dad.  Although when I first started I felt that was too informal and so I started with Dear Father.  You can address the letter however you like.  Then you write in this letter anything you want to talk to God about for the day.  Whatever you would say to Him if you were having a conversation with Him, because you are.  When you are done with that letter, you can ask God to answer your letter back through your pen.  Then you start a second letter and address it to yourself.  I usually start if off with My Dearest Daughter, but you can begin the letter in any way that you want to.  Then you write whatever comes to your mind.  The trick is to not sensor the letter, not judge the thoughts and question if they are from God.  You asked Him to answer you and when we ask He answers.  Just start writing, without judgement, or too much thought whatever comes into your mind.  This has been a really awesome way for me to grow closer to God.  If you have longed for a back and forth conversation from God this will be life changing for you.  Some of you listening may already hear from God just by sitting in silence and listening.  If this is you, I still encourage you to give the letter writing a try.  See if it is any different.  I learned this exercise from Fran Groin at The Life Purpose Institute where I earned my spiritual coaching certificate.  I hope everyone listening will give this a try.  At first it may seem strange, but it gets easier and having these letters from your heavenly Father to go back and read is so great.  Remember this word the Lord gave us when you read your letters.  God loves us and so when you write nice things know that is How He truly feels about you.  God is calling us to come closer to Him, let's answer that call.Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, we thank you for your amazing words you gave to the prayer group.  We thank you for loving so well and so completely.  We thank you for finding ways to show us how much you love us and want us to throw ourselves onto you.  Lord, we ask you to help us do this.  We ask you to help us to come to you and to bathe ourselves in the river of your love.  Lord we ask you to help us grow closer to you.  We ask that you show us how you want us to do that and then give us the strength or will power to do it.  Lord, I ask that you help everyone listening to this episode try the journal exercise.  I ask you to give them the courage to try something new and I ask that you make it fruitful for them.  Lord, we love you so much and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen.Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  I look forward to spending time with you tomorrow.  Have a blessed day!

Hearing The Voice of Our Good ShepherdRevelations 7:17 "For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.' ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.'”What a beautiful image of God wiping away every tear from our eyes.  I don't know about you, but I am a crier.  I tend to cry a lot.  God is going to be busy if He is going to wipe away every tear.  In all seriousness though, this is a beautiful scripture.  It starts off by talking about the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd.  That Lamb is Jesus.  He is our good shepherd.  It says in John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd.  The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”  This is exactly what Jesus did for us, He laid down His life for us, his sheep.  I heard a story yesterday from a friend about an incident that happened when she was walking in Walmart during the pandemic.  She was walking in Walmart with a mask on because there was still a mandate that a mask was required to shop there.  However, there was a man walking towards her with two young girls with him.  When he passed my friend he made sheep sounds at her.  He was implying that she was a sheep and that she was blindly following the other sheep.  I have heard this analogy often and despite the popular belief that sheep are stupid, they are actually incredibly intelligent. They have very impressive cognitive ability and just like humans, they form deep and lasting bonds with each other, they stick up for one another in fights, and they grieve when they lose a friend. They experience all of the same emotions that we do including fear, joy, boredom, anger and happiness to name a few.  We envision the sheep blindly following whoever and going wherever they are told to go.  This is not the case.  Sheep recognize their shepherd's voice and they will go wherever their shepherd tells them to go.  They have complete trust in their shepherd.  The shepherd in return for this obedience loves them and is willing to lay down his life for them.  How beautiful is that?I think this is one way that sheep have an advantage over us.  They recognize their shepherd's voice and so they follow it.  I think we have a hard time figuring out whose voice to listen not. The world is so busy and so noisy and there are so many voices speaking into our lives.  There are the voices of the loved ones around us. They are speaking to us and leading us in a direction they think we should go.  Then there are our friends who may not have the same beliefs we do and they are leading us in the direction they think we should go.  Then there are all the voices of those in the world that also usually have opinions of how we should and shouldn't be living.  There are so many voices and we get confused and we don't know which ones to listen to.  Often times the voices and the noises of the world are so loud we can't hear the voice of our good shepherd.  The voices of the world are not the voices that we need to be listening to and yet they are so loud we can't hear any other voices.  The verse above says that the shepherd will lead us to springs of living waters.  Don't we want this?  Don't we want to follow the shepherd that will lead us to springs of living waters?  So, how do we learn to hear the Lord's voice more?  How do we learn to tune out all the noise of the world so we can focus in on the Lord's voice?  First, we can begin by spending time each day trying to hear the Lord's voice.  How much time do you spend each day asking the Lord for things in prayer?  How much time do you spend sitting quietly and asking the Lord what He wants to say to you?  The Lord wants to talk to us, we just don't give Him the time to talk.  This can be your first step.  Just sit quietly ask let the Lord know you are ready to listen.  At our prayer group we usually begin by saying, “Speak Lord, your servants are listening.” (1 Samuel 3:10) You do not have to start off by sitting down and giving God 30 minutes of quite time to speak to you.  If you have never done this before 30 minutes is a long time.  Even if you have, it still may be a long time.  Just start out with 5 minutes of quiet time and see what happens.  The next step that can help you start hearing the Lord's word more is to write down whatever He tells you in that five minutes.  I struggle with just sitting there and not thinking of anything and not doing anything for 5 min.  So, I do an exercise I learned from Fern Gorin at the Life Purpose Institute.  I ask the Lord to speak to me through my pen and then I write down whatever comes to mind for the next 5 minutes or however long I am sitting there for.  This is especially helpful because then you can go back and read over it.  Now, is every single thing that comes to mind in that 5 minutes from the Lord, probably not, but it is a start.  I think the more times you do this, the more and more of what you write will be from the Lord.  Also, you are asking the Lord to show up and when we ask, He answers.  So, why wouldn't he show up and talk to you through your pen?  The key to this exercise is to not question everything that comes into your mind.  Just write it all down and then you can read over it later and think about what you think the Lord was telling you.  While you are writing, don't second guess your self, don't let the enemies voice come in and get you to question why the Lord would talk to you, block out all the doubt and just trust that you asked the Lord to show up and so He will.  If we want the shepherd to lead us to springs of living waters and we want the Lord to wipe away every tear, then we need to learn to listen to the shepherd's voice and to follow Him where ever he is leading us.  The way I suggested above is just one way to begin to hear the Lord's voice.  If it doesn't resonate with you, no worries, do something different.  We are all different people and we all do things differently.  The important part of this message is not that you listen to the Lord's voice the same way I do.  The important thing is that we all figure out a way to block out all the noise of the world and start finding a way to hear the voice of our good good shepherd.  Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, we ask you to help us hear your voice.  We want you to lead us to the living waters and to wipe away all our tears.  Help us to hear your voice above all others.  Help us to block out the noise of the world and concentrate on your voice.  Lord, we are so grateful for all you do for us.  We are so grateful to be counted as one of your sheep.  You are an awesome shepherd and we love you.  We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen.Thank you for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  I look forward to spending time with you again tomorrow.  Have a blessed day!

I have called you every day by your name because I know you, I love you, because you are my friend.”Dear Heavenly Father I ask that you bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord we ask that you help us develop a personal relationship with you. We pray that you help us to understand how much you love us and how much you know each one of us personally. We thank you so much Lord for that personal attention.  We thank you for all the countless times you have listen to us and we pray that we can teach us how to quiet our minds and listen to you.  We love you Lord and we long to have a personal relationship with you.  We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen.

Some of the most interesting people I know are the ones who’ve had a winding, twisting, irregular career path — starting out doing one thing, then dabbling in something else, and then taking a massive left turn into a whole new arena. These people have unique perspectives and loads of fascinating stories that never seem to run out. They also tend to have very few regrets because they’ve played out many of their “what if” daydreams in real life. And yet, most people are also terrified to take an unconventional career path that doesn’t follow on the linear “perfect resume” format we’ve all been taught is correct.  So what gives? Why are we so attracted to people with the most interesting (read: nonlinear) paths in life, and yet we feel so resistant to becoming one of them? It all comes down to fear: fear of failure, fear of what people will think, fear of rejection, fear of the unknown, fear of disappointment, and on and on. That’s why I’m excited to have Emily Florence on the podcast today. She felt all of those fears at every twist in her unconventional career path, but she followed her intuition and acted anyway. Jessica Holmes has opened for comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, Leslie Nielsen, and Ellen DeGeneres, as well as hosted events for such visionaries as Deepak Chopra, Tony Robbins, and Oprah Winfrey! Although a comedian at heart, having performed with the Second City and Just for Laughs, Holmes has recently delved into writing: penning the book I Love Your Laugh: Finding the Light in My Screwball Life. Born and raised in Ottawa en Anglais et Francais, Holmes sat back and enjoyed the hilarity that was her family: a handful of older brothers, a mormon father and a feminist mother. Not a sitcom, just her family. The Second City, Just for Laughs and TV shows like Little Big Kid and The Itch got her noticed as a funny, quirky presence in the comedy community. After her comedy special Holmes Alone taped, she was offered her own sketch series: The Holmes Show. A Carol Burnett style series with lots of characters & impressions, Holmes became known for her oddball personifications of Celine Dion, Liza Minelli and Geri Halliwell. Holmes was delighted to join the cast of Royal Canadian Air Farce (having applied to be their secretary five years earlier, and been turned down…they still have her typing test!). There she played politicians and celebrities; including Michael Jackson and Jessica Simpson. During her years on Air Farce, Jessica had two children, Alexa and Jordan, with her actor husband Scott. Holmes wrote her first book, I Love Your Laugh: Finding the Light in my Screwball Life, in 2010. Having fallen in love with public speaking, Holmes decided to deepen the scope of her material by becoming a Life & Career Coach through San Diego’s Life Purpose Institute. She now enjoys a mix of comedy & motivational speaking.   *** For Show Notes, Key Points, Contact Info, Resources Mentioned, & More on this episode please visit our website: RockBottom2RockinIt.com. *** Feedback?
