Saving Private Bookstores Guest: Marc Côté     “Bookstores are important, because they sell the cultural objects that feed and shape our souls – books and the stories they contain make us more human. They improve our ability to empathize, and empathy is the glue that holds societies together,” says Marc Côté, the publisher of Cormorant Books.   Ask yourself this: when was the last time you bought a book in a bookstore in Canada written by a Canadian? Not from Amazon, but in a bookstore with a person to talk to who knows about books. The number of bankrupt bookstores suggests not many of us have purchased a book in a book store in Canada, let alone a book written by a Canadian.   The “More Canada” report proves it: “Canadian book-sells lost 50 percent of their market share from 1995 to 2015.” Côté says, “With shrinking market presence comes shrinking book sales and revenues — money that makes possible the discovery and nurturing of literary talents known throughout our country and abroad.”   If you are reading this and feeling badly that you didn't go into the local bookstore before it closed, you're not alone. Did you know your local library also orders online from the United States, even when buying Canadian books? Côté says, “Answering the disappearing Canadian bookstore conundrum won't be easy. It's going to take more than just consumers – governments also have to get involved and provide a menu of incentives, tax breaks and subsidies.”    We invited Marc Côté of Cormorant Books to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the important role bookstores play in neighbourhoods and our lives.   Please become a Patreon subscriber and support the production of this program, with a $1 pledge https://goo.gl/ypXyDs

If you’ve been tuning in to the podcast for a while now, something I’ve said quite often is that Gino Wickman’s book, Traction, had a tremendous impact on me and my business. So much so, that I’ve done an entire podcast series documenting how I applied his principles in running my own company.    This is a big reason why today’s episode is special, as my guest is none other than Gino Wickman himself.   A bestselling author and entrepreneur that needs no introduction, Gino is here to give us a sneak peek into his new book, Entrepreneurial Leap, which answers all the difficult questions you have to ask yourself before making that big leap into entrepreneurship.   In this episode, we break down the essential traits of an entrepreneur and why these innately human traits make four percent of all people cut out for entrepreneurship.    We also talk about why falling short of these traits is not the end of the world and the plethora of alternatives available to you. Gino also gives his author’s insights into the three stages to successful entrepreneurship, which are also the three main parts of the book : Confirm, Glimpse, and Path.   Timestamps: The six essential traits of every entrepreneur - 6:11 The entrepreneurial range and why falling short of the six traits is not a death sentence - 16:11 Gino’s free Entrepreneur-in-the-Making Assessment - 25:04 Living the proverbial nightmare of entrepreneurship - 26:32 An overview of Path and what hiring an integrator can do for you - 32:59 Preventing your business from getting away from you - 41:22 Why frequent communication with your employees matters - 45:28   Books mentioned: Traction, by Gino Wickman Entrepreneurial Leap, by Gino Wickman Rocket Fuel, by Gino Wickman and Marc C. Winters   By the way, we’re giving away three autographed copies of Entrepreneurial Leap!   If you want the chance to win one of these three copies signed by Gino Wickman himself, simply head over to iTunes and leave us a review! Then, take a screenshot of your review and email it to us at support@ecomcrew.com with the Subject Line: Entrepreneurial Leap. If you’ve already left us a review, don’t worry, just take a screenshot of your old review and follow the instructions above.   Your email qualifies as your entry and we will be selecting three lucky winners randomly.   Entries will be accepted until April 30, 2021 and we will announce the winners shortly thereafter on the podcast. Good luck!   Don’t forget to check out our podcast series on Traction: E138: Traction Part 1 – Company Core Values E140: Traction Part 2 – Company Core Focus and 10 Year Goal E143: Traction Part 3 – Marketing Strategy and 3-Year Plan E149: Traction Part 4 – One Year Plan and Quarterly Rocks   I’d like to thank Gino for coming on the podcast and for all the work he’s done in helping entrepreneurs like myself realize their dreams. Be sure to check out all the awesome entrepreneur-in-the-making tools that we mentioned throughout the episode, which are all available for free on e-leap.com.    Gino is also open to collaborators looking to guide budding entrepreneurs to success.    If you enjoyed this episode as much as I did, definitely let me know by leaving a review over on iTunes.   Until the next one, happy selling!

Marc Côté is President of Cormorant Books, a literary publishing house noted for its discovery and development of Canadian writing talent and the publishing of Quebecois fiction translated into English. He has won Canada's Libris Award for editor of the year twice, and Cormorant has won the Libris Award for small presses three times. At Cormorant Marc has acquired and edited many award-nominated books.  The Great Gatsby is a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, published by Scribner's in 1925. Set in the Jazz Age on Long Island it depicts narrator Nick Carraway's relationship with mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, and Gatsby's obsessive desire to reunite with his former lover Daisy Buchanan.  The Biblio File Book Club is series of book discussions with smart people about books that they believe are important; books they would recommend to loved ones...books they consider to be essential reading. Zoom wasn't behaving very well during our conversation, so apologies for the irritating distortions, etc.

Bold Brands: Technology and Innovation in Apparel eCommerce

It is only through connectivity that the potential of the other three trends can be realized.  That is why Capgemini has created the Conected Vehicles Trend Radar, focusing on different aspects of the connected vehicle: markets, customers, technology, and new players.  For this first Trend Radar we’ve concentrated on passenger cars, and on technology (AI, blockchain, 5G) and new players (start-ups, large entrants from other sectors).  Speakers: Marc Pauli, Christian Hummel, Marc Cäsar

The world's longest airplane flight took place in 1958, when two aircraft mechanics spent 64 days above the southwestern U.S. in a tiny Cessna with no amenities. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow the aerial adventures of Bob Timm and John Cook as they set a record that still stands today. We'll also consider a derelict kitty and puzzle over a movie set's fashion dictates. Intro: The Pythagorean theorem can be demonstrated using tangrams.
